arcimboldo giuseppe

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526/1527-1593)
“The Librarian” (1566)
Oil on canvas
Mannerism
Located in the Skokloster Castle, Håbo Municipality, Sweden.

Arcimboldo is best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects including fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books. At a distance, his portraits looked like normal human portraits. However, individual objects in each portrait were actually overlapped together to make various anatomical shapes of a human. They were carefully constructed by his imagination. The assembled objects in each portrait were not random: each was related by characterization. For example, in “The Librarian” the curtain was used to create individual study rooms in a library, and the animal tails, which became the beard of the portrait, were used as dusters.

The painting is thought to be a portrait of Wolfgang Lazius, a humanist and historian who served the Holy Roman Emperors of the House of Habsburg.

1 - Giovanni Brega, Villa Ruggeri, Pesaro, 1902. Scanned from the book “Jugendstil” by Gabriele Fahr-Becker.

From the book: “ Oreste Ruggeri, the owner of a ceramics studio and a supporter of the new style, asked Brega to build him a villa. If one looks carefully it’s not difficult to perceive the Italian tradition and heritage under the ornamental coat of the facade. Brega gave two eyes-like windows to the Oriental part of the house, a floral element in armed concrete reminiscent of a nose, and a mouth.like entrance. Thus he obtained a an ensemble that reminds us of the vegetable portraits of Giuseppe Arcimboldo.”

2 - Antoni Gaudi i Cornet, Dragon Door, 1884-87. Entry to the Finca Guell, Pedralbes 7 Avenue, Les Corts de Sarrià, Barcelona, Spain.

Wrought iron.

“The Dragon Door of the Finca Guell has to be considered a perfect testimony to the artistic quality of the Catalan works in wrought iron. This door is on a pillar of bricks and natural stone and opens in a singular vertical axis. The dragon represents Ládon, guardian of the Hesperus garden. By order of the goddess Juno it had to guard the golden apples in that garden. When Hercules defeated the monster it transformed into a constellation. Gaudi placed the door under an orange tree that crowns the pillars and is a symbol of great prosperity.”

Scanned and quoted from the book “Art Nouveau” by Gabriele Fahr-Becker.

3 - Door, Salamanca, Spain, c. 1900s. Private house.

“With Modernism sophisticated and elegant buildings appear a bit everywhere throughout Spain, incorporating the European stylistic tendencies, even if in a superficial way, looking to improve the cities.”
