“Nevertheless, She Persisted” Bookmarks for Sale!!!

We’ve been thinking about making merchandise for our book club for ages and had been brainstorming over design ideas. Then when Elizabeth Warren’s “Nevertheless, she persisted” story broke, we felt inspired that we’d finally found a great idea!

Image Description:

The front of the bookmark says “Nevertheless, she persisted” across the top, and shows a girl holding a large stack of books.

The back is an image of colorful bookshelves, and says the name of our book club, Let’s Read About Feminism.

Price:

We are selling them for $3 each, with FREE SHIPPING within the United States (including Puerto Rico) and ONLY $1 to ship internationally!

If you’d like to buy multiples, we are offering 10 bookmarks for $25 and 20 bookmarks for $45.

Ordering 10 or more will add $1 to your shipping charge.

How to buy:

Please make your payment through PayPal to LRAFBC@gmail.com! In the Note section, please include the number of bookmarks you are ordering, and your shipping address!

What’s the money going toward?

A portion of the profits will go toward buying  our monthly book club book for a giveaway winner, likely starting in April! Book club members will enter in late March to win a free copy of our winning book, which will be purchased and shipped with funds from our bookmark sale!

Any questions?

If you have any questions, please contact us here, or at LRAFBC@gmail.com.

Depending on how well the bookmarks sell, more designs will be forthcoming, along with other items for sale as well!

Thanks for being a part of our Feminist Agenda!

April Book Club Picks

Here are three options for next month’s books. These are from different fairy tales- once you guys vote on a book, that fairy tale will be our choice! As you can tell, I’m doing things a little differently each time the first couple months until I can figure out what way works best.

1) The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes. Based on the Grimms’ fairy tale Girl With No Hands, Minnow Bly is about a girl escaping from a cult that has taken her family, her freedom, and her hands. After she’s escaped, the cult leader is murdered and Minnow is a suspect. I think this book could be a good choice because it’s based on a fairy tale that doesn’t often get many reimaginings. It’s also much darker than our last book club choice, and it’s a modern retelling. Trigger warnings for graphic violence and implied sexual abuse (based on Goodreads reviews- I have not personally read this book.)

2) Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter. Based on the Russian tale Vasilisa the Beautiful, this book tells a modern fantasy story about a girl named Vassa who lives in a fairy tale version of New York, complete with talking wooden dolls. Vassa finds herself one night in the convenience store owned by Babs Yagg, a vicious witch. This book might be a fun choice because it’s based on Russian folklore, it’s a modern fantasy which I know many of us adore, and every single review on Goodreads says it’s “really weird.” Trigger warnings I’ve found include blood and violence, but I have not personally read this book.

3) Ash by Malinda Lo. Based on Cinderella, this book tells the story of Ash who meets a dangerous and dark faerie. But she begins to fall in love with Kasia, the king’s huntress and she is torn between faeries and true love. I think this could be a good option because it is one of the rare LGBT fairy tale retellings around, it is another “classic” fantasy setting, and seems to be about grief and recovery. I could not find any trigger warnings for this book. Once again, I have not read the book.

Please vote! The books not picked will be considered again at a later date. Please vote on this post or send me an ask if you prefer to be on anon. So tell me: 1, 2, 3?

Now we wait

Hi guys!

As you may have noticed, the past couple weeks have brought us a deluge of drabbles and one shots. This is in large part due to a couple challenges hosted by @everlarkficexchange and @the–everlark–games. Because of the large number of stories that have been posted, all of which deserve to be read and reviewed, the book club will be temporarily suspending our read-along of multi-chapters and Round 1 PiPs (we will resume in May).

This list also covers the second half of the featured fic of the month, @sothereff‘s A Softer Place To Land. Over the next couple weeks we’ll also be posting some discussion questions about the story. Please chime in when you see them! We’d love to hear your thoughts.

As always, if you have a favorite fic you’d like us to read, if you’re an author who would like the book club to feature your work, or you’ve stumbled upon a story that could use our support… whatever… please send the rec our way (seriously, please). All recs are welcome. It doesn’t matter if someone is a first-time author or long-time author. This list includes new stories and old stories, so send along anything you have. Apologies to any/all authors who posted one shots or drabbles over the past couple weeks that were omitted- all omissions were entirely unintentional. We’d be more than happy to include them next time, so let us know.

The ground rules are the same as ever…. read what you can. Send reviews or comments to the authors or here for posting. Keep it positive. Support each other, love each other, and have fun with this thing.

Hugs and happy reading, c

Hi guys!

Thank you to everyone for being so patient waiting for an updated book list. I had some personal stuff to attend to, but, on the bright side, we’ve amassed a bumper crop of fics to read. I’m not exaggerating… it’s been completely impossible difficult to keep track of even a fraction of the stories, drabbles, and updates that have been posted over the past few weeks.

The featured fic of the month, @sothereff‘s A Softer Place To Land, has been included on the past couple book lists because it is an actively updating WIP. It is, however, also a story that appears on this list, which we’re currently using to select our featured fics. So the plan is to (re)read the first half of the story in the first half of April and then the other seven posted chapters in the second half of the month. The next list will also include a ton of one shots and drabbles currently being posted to @everlarkficexchange‘s blog (for fast readers or anyone wanting to scope that out- head over!).

As always, if you have a favorite fic you’d like for us to read, if you’re an author who would like the book club to feature your work, or you’ve stumbled upon a story that could use our support… whatever… please send the rec my way (seriously, please). All recs are welcome. It doesn’t matter if someone is a first-time author or long-time author. This list includes new stories and old stories, so send anything you have my way.

The ground rules are the same as ever…. read what you can. Send reviews or comments to the authors or here for posting. Keep it positive. Support each other, love each other, and have fun with this thing.

Hugs and happy reading, c
