“Like elder brother and younger brother”

(Shoma and Keiji’s interview in Quadruple 2017 Extra magazine. Thanks to @chestnutskating for the scans!)

Shoma Uno and Keiji Tanaka have been leading Japanese men’s figure skating since they were juniors, and they finished gold and silver at this season’s Japanese Nationals. Their joint interview became a reality after they finished their segments at Worlds. We got a sneak peak into the 19 and 23 year olds’ raw, true selves which we do not get to see most of the time.

– Well done at the World Championships. Were you in the same room this time?

K + S: Nope, we weren’t.

S: We haven’t roomed together much since we became seniors right?

K: Nope, not normally.

– You roomed together frequently when you were juniors.

S: Yep, that’s right.

K: We did room a lot when we were juniors.

Beast!Adam x Reader

Nothing’s Changed

Prompt: How about one where the curse breaks for everyone else (The servants, the castle, the forest, etc.) But not for Adam.

Note: OOOooooooooh yas.

When you found Adam, he had locked himself in his room. The final petal had fallen. All of his friends…his family had become nothing more than knickknacks forever. And he, well, Adam was doomed to live out the rest of his life in this form. As a beast.

He wasn’t mad at you, despite it all. It wasn’t your fault. You hadn’t made him a prince so choked with pride and selfishness that he wouldn’t even accept a kindly old woman into his castle, a prince so obsessed with beauty that he turned away any person in whom he found none.

And now…now, he had finally gotten what he deserved. He didn’t deserve your love. He didn’t deserve your pity. He didn’t even deserve to stand in your presence.

“Adam?” Your voice was quiet, tentative. You had been forced to watch as the others had frozen into the items they had become. Quiet. Useless. Tears were streaming down your cheeks. “Adam, please.”

“What?” His deep voice sounded so defeated. You could tell he was sitting on the other side of the heavy wooden door, wallowing in shame or guilt or something of that matter.

“Adam, I’m so sorry.” You didn’t even know what to say to him. The curse hadn’t broken, not that you knew what would break it anyway, but now he was trapped. A man forever cursed to remain inside a beast.

“It’s not your fault.” He stated. “It’s mine. Go home. Please. I can’t doom you to a life of loneliness too.”

“I’m…I’m not leaving.”

“You can’t just stay-”

“Where would I even go? Back to the village? Not happening.”

“Open the door, Adam. Please.”

There was a long patch of silence. And then, begrudgingly, Adam got up off of the floor and pushed the door open an inch. One of his icy blue eyes met yours and sent a shiver down your spine.

“Why are you still here?”

“Because I care about you.” You replied, pulling the door open further. Little did you know that the two of you were not alone. As you took a step closer to the fearsome beast, the enchantress’ hidden eyes watched, intrigued. “Because…I love you. And I’m not going to leave you. Not now when you need me most.”

A wave of magic tore through the castle, spreading from the space between the two of you. As it spread, the walls became brighter, the statues less menacing, and when you and Adam reached the ballroom, the servants came to life.

And yet, despite the curse lifting from the castle and all of its inhabitants, Adam remained a beast. Through the heartfelt reunions and celebrations, nothing changed. But Adam noticed that despite everything happening around the two of you, the way you looked at him didn’t change either. It wasn’t as though he was hideous in your eyes now just because he could be human. And it surprised him when the realization hit: Despite it all, you still cared for him.

It was hours and hours later that he finally retired to bed. You walked to the West Wing with him. He closed the door behind the two of you. Adam had told you he wanted to talk, but now that he had you here, with that look on your face and the glimmer in your eyes, he wasn’t sure what he was going to say. But he swallowed the lump in his throat and figured he’d give it a shot.

“I want to give you another chance,” Adam stated, eventually finding the words. “I don’t want you to feel obligated to stay here…with me. You deserve someone…someone who’s not…”

“Listen.” You took one of his paws in both of your hands. “I’m not going anywhere. I mean it.”

“I can’t give you everything someone else could.”

“I don’t care.” You looked up into his eyes. “No matter what happens, no matter what comes our way, we will get through it together. I promise.” You threw your arms around him and rested your head on his chest, where you could hear his heart hammering away. “I love you.”

“I…I love you too.” He gingerly wrapped his arms around your smaller frame, careful not to hurt you in the process.

And when the enchantress saw that your love was true, it was then that she cast her magic.

The Crisis of Governance

America is in a crisis of governance. There is no adult in charge.

Instead, we have as president an unhinged narcissistic child who tweets absurd lies and holds rallies to prop up his fragile ego, whose conflicts of financial interest are ubiquitous, and whose presidency is under a “gray cloud” of suspicion (according to the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee) for colluding with Russian agents to obtain office in the 2016 election.

He’s advised by his daughter, his son-in-law, and an oddball who once ran a white supremacist fake-news outlet.

His cabinet is an assortment of billionaires, CEOs, veterans of Wall Street, and ideologues, none of whom has any idea about how to govern and most of whom don’t believe in the laws their departments are in charge of implementing anyway.

He has downgraded or eviscerated groups responsible for giving presidents professional advice on foreign policy, foreign intelligence, economics, science, and domestic policy. He gets most of what he learns from television.

Meanwhile, Congress is in the hands of Republicans who for years have only said “no,” who have become expert at stopping whatever a president wants to do but don’t have a clue how to initiate policy, most of whom have never passed a budget into law, and, more generally, don’t much like government and have not shared responsibility for governing the nation.

As a result of all this, the most powerful nation in the world with the largest economy in the world is rudderless and leaderless.

Where we need thoughtful resolve we have thoughtless name-calling. Where we need democratic deliberation we have authoritarian rants and rallies. Where we need vision we have myopia.

The only way out of this crisis of governance is for us – the vast majority of Americans who deserve and know better – to take charge. Your country needs you desperately.

Hi! First of all, I love your blog x How do you study all your languages? Do you have a specific way of learning a language?

Hey there! Thank you! Okay so I know that a lot of people have difficulties when starting a new language on your own and have trouble at how to proceed, especially when there’s no Duolingo to guide you, so I will tell you how I personally* begin and study my languages.

*this how I personally study languages. This is what I found most comfortable doing. It’s best if you find your own way of learning but I’m happy if I can give you tips on what you can do to help you guys.

How I take notes and write everything down

A lot of people prefer to get notebooks or journals and write whatever they learn down. Now, I do that for the purpose of memory (because writing things down will help you remember them more), but I write and make all of my language notes on my phone. I use my notes app on my iPhone and construct my little language course on it. For me this is helpful because I can revise/check something at any time because my phone is always with me and I found that this is the best way I study languages. I’ll show you an example:

as you can see this is my Polish folder where I have different notes on different themes. I categorize vocab notes by themes and verb notes by number so that I won’t have an excessive amount of verbs in one note. But obviously you can do whatever you like!

Where I start

Obviously after having learned the alphabet and how pronunciation works I always start with greetings and introductions. Learning simple words and beginner expressions is always helpful and will give you a feel of the language itself. Usually I learn the following:

  • yes and no
  • hello, good morning, goodbye, welcome etc.
  • please, thank you, excuse me, sorry
  • nice to meet you
  • what’s your name? how are you? where are you from? how old are you? and their replies.

Try not to worry and get in detail of how some words, verbs are formed. Just try to memorize the phrases for now and they’ll make sense eventually.

After that I learn the basics. What are the basics? For me that’s grammar. I start with learning the Personal Pronouns in Subject Form and the To Be verb and how they interact together. Learn also how to negate sentences by learning any negation grammar and how so say, for example, I am not.

Next step ultimately depends on what kind of language you’re learning. If you’re learning a language that uses articles such as indefinite or definite than learn how to use them and the grammar (if any) behind them. Also if your target language has some kind of feature that is important to your grammar, like for example Vowel Harmony or Consonant Mutation or how to tell which type of gender nouns are and then try to learn how those work. I know that to some people grammar is very boring but I try to get the basics out of the way from the beginning so I don’t have to worry about it later.

I proceed on learning the Object Form of the Personal Pronouns and then also the Possessive forms such as my, your, his, her etc. Again, it depends on the language, so if there are other forms of these pronouns I try to get them out of the way as well. After that, I tackle Interrogative Pronouns which usually consist of:

  • who? what? where? why? when? how? which? whose? (how much? from where? what kind of? whom+ any forms that might change depending on language

and after those, I learn how to use the Demonstrative Pronouns which are:

  • this, that, these, those + any forms that might change depending on language

For some reason I enjoy learning numbers so those are usually next for me. Okay so now that the most important parts are learned and finished I begin to build up my vocabulary. I usually start with the simple nouns that Duolingo starts you off with like:

  • man, woman, boy, girl, child, water, apple, milk, bread etc. + plural forms

And also the most important verbs for beginners:

  • to want, to have, to do, to go, to know, to see, to speak, to eat, to drink, to write, to hear, to read, to like, to love, to think, to need, to sleep, to cook, to buy, to come, can, must, will etc.

For me I prefer if I learn how to use verbs in all tenses or moods (if any) from the beginning. This way I get familiar with the grammar of verbs and I would be able to convey past, present, future or others early on in my studies. I list down all possibly conjugations in my notes and also imperative form (commands)

So by the time I finish these I already can say a few simple sentences or hold a very basic conversation with someone. From now on I continue learning other vocabulary by themes such:

  • dates & time
  • family & relatives
  • clothes
  • animals
  • food
  • body parts
  • occupations
  • etc.

After these or during some of these I start learning how to work case declension out (if any), adjectives + Comparative & Superlative, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and any other aspects that will solidify your sentences.

Okay so this is roughly how I personally study languages, I’m sorry for the long ass post and I hope I could be helpful to someone who’s struggling to know where to begin in learning a language by yourself. Good luck!

No, Paul, It Wasn’t Because of “Growing Pains”

House Speaker Paul Ryan, in his press conference following the demise of his bill to replace Obamacare, blamed Republicans who had failed to grasp that the GOP was now a “governing party.”

“We were a 10-year opposition party, where being against things was easy to do,” said Ryan. “You just had to be against it. Now, in three months’ time, we tried to go to a governing party where we actually had to get 216 people to agree with each other on how we do things.”

It was, he said, “the growing pains of government.”

Apparently Ryan doesn’t grasp that he put forward a terrible bill to begin with. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, it would have resulted in 24 million Americans losing health coverage over the next decade, hardly make a dent in the federal debt, and transfer over $600 billion to the wealthiest members of American society.

The so-called “Freedom Caucus” of House Republicans, who refused to go along with the bill, wanted it even worse. Essentially, their goal (and that of their fat-cat patrons) was to repeal the Affordable Care Act without replacing it at all.

Ryan is correct about one thing. Congress is in the hands of Republicans who for years have only said “no.” They have become expert at stopping whatever a president wants to do but they don’t have a clue how to initiate policy.

Most of the current Republican House members have not shared responsibility for governing the nation. They have never even passed a budget into law.

But their real problem isn’t the “growing pains” of being out of power. In reality, the Republicans who are now control the House – as well as the Senate – don’t like government. They’re temperamentally and ideologically oriented to opposing it, not leading it.

Their chronic incapacity to govern didn’t reveal itself as long as a Democrat was in the White House. They let President Obama try to govern, and pretended that their opposition was based on a different philosophy governing.

Now that they have a Republican president, they can no longer hide. They have no philosophy of governing at all.

Sadly for them – and for the rest of the country, and the world – the person they supported in the election of 2016 and who is now president is an unhinged narcissistic child who tweets absurd lies and holds rallies to prop up his fragile ego.

His conflicts of financial interest are legion. His entire  presidency is under a “gray cloud” of suspicion for colluding with Russian agents to win office.

Here’s a man who’s advised by his daughter, his son-in-law, and an oddball who once ran a white supremacist fake-news outlet.

His Cabinet is an assortment of billionaires, CEOs, veterans of Wall Street, and ideologues, none of whom has any idea about how to govern and most of whom don’t believe in the laws their departments are in charge of implementing anyway.

Meanwhile, he has downgraded or eviscerated groups of professionals responsible for giving presidents professional advice on foreign policy, foreign intelligence, economics, science, and domestic policy.

He gets most of what he learns from television.

So we have a congress with no capacity to govern, and a president who’s incapable of governing.

Which leaves the most powerful nation in the world rudderless.

The country on whom much of the rest of the world relies for organizing and mobilizing responses to the major challenges facing humankind is leaderless.

It is of course possible that Republicans in congress will learn to take responsibility for governing. It is possible that Donald Trump will learn to lead. It is possible that pigs will learn to fly.

But such things seem doubtful. Instead, America and the rest of the world must hold our collective breath, hoping that the next elections – the midterms of 2018 and then the presidential election of 2020 – set things right. And hoping that in the meantime nothing irrevocably awful occurs.

This is probably very obvious to everyone else, but it just clicked for me, so…

The Angry Identitarian Left is the way it is, in part, because its practices are optimized specifically for college campus activism

Within a university, the world is controlled by a nigh-omnipotent authority.  If you are a student, it is probable that the authority basically likes you and wants you to succeed; even if the administrators find you annoying, they fundamentally regard you as community members who should be receiving a good education, not as vermin or monsters or fifth-columnists.  If you are a leftist or liberal, it is probable that the authority basically shares your fundamental values; the administrators are basically you, thirty years down the pike.  But the authority is lazy and venal and (especially) worried about disruptions and embarrassments.  By default, you will be denied a lot of the political things you want, because that’s the easiest and cheapest thing, because the most convenient way to keep donors happy usually involves sweeping problems under the rug and not shelling out money.

Under these circumstances, the most flexible strategic plan seems to involve a two-pronged social assault, with the prongs consisting of “moral suasion” and “extortion.”  You speak with as much holiness and self-righteousness as you can muster, in hopes that you can guilt the administrators into acknowledging the merit of your points, which has a good chance of working because deep down the administrators probably do see the merit of your points.  (They really, genuinely don’t want to be racist or sexist either!)  And you make yourself as annoying and obstreperous as you can, with the implicit promise that you’ll stop as soon as you get what you want, in hopes that appeasing you becomes the easy way out.

There’s not much to be gained by persuading anyone of anything, or by looking to compromise with anyone, because there’s not really any principled opposition with whom to engage.  There’s also no real downside to using nasty rhetoric and dirty tactics.  In the wider world, that shit causes people to hate and fear you, it alienates potential allies and cements the resolve of your enemies…but within the college, you have no genuine enemies and you don’t have much use for allies.  All that matters is whether you can break through the sloth and self-interestedness of the decision-makers.

How is there any doubt whom Yang chose? As much as I would like a Yang/Raven encounter, it wouldn’t make sense for Yang (a.k.a. best big sister ever) to go anywhere but to Ruby. Not to mention, her new song is literally about letting go of the past, so no Raven. (And for people who will bring up Blake, Yang doesn’t even now where Blake is. She left without saying anything when Yang was unconscious). Now if she meets Raven on her way there that is a different story.

side 14 || hannah baker

prompt: Hi can you do a Hannah baker x reader. the reader is Hannah’s little sister by a 2 years and adopted just about Hannah leaving the last tape to her nothing bad just telling her she loves her and that it was not her fault that she died nice sisterly tape is that makes since💚

warnings: character death

a/n: i hope you enjoy !! i also suck at titles but as always requests are open and feedback is appreciated , also this is kinda short bc its like straight to the point. ALSO the 14th tape/side isn’t Bryce’s confession just hannahs message to you

You were devastated when you found out about Hannah. She was your older sister and you looked up to her. You were somewhat aware about all the things that had happened to her, you didn’t think she would act like this. You were angry at yourself, you could’ve done something to prevent this if you had just spoken and told your parents. But after Hannah’s death, you went through your week with looks of sadness from other people and at least 5 people telling you, “I’m so sorry for your loss.”

You get people were trying to be nice but really you knew they didn’t really give a fuck, since they were the ones who had believed all the rumors about Hannah. You had also noticed that Clay had started talking to you more, which you found really weird. Since he was Hannah’s best friend and you were pretty sure she liked him. But you went on with your life trying to ignore the pity looks everyone gave you.

Two weeks had passed since Hannah’s death and you came home to a neatly wrapped package on your doorstep. The box had your name on it but no return address or any clue to whom it came from. You brought the wrapped package to your room, opening it to reveal a damaged shoe box. You opened it examining the contents inside, 7 tapes with numbers on them. You took out a tape player you had in your room and put the first tape it, the number 1 showing upward.

You listened to the tapes and finally you reached side 14. You were pretty sure this was your tape and you were nervous as hell and angry. You pressed play on the walkman, and you heard Hannah’s voice. “Hey, welcome to the last tape. Happy you stayed and made it this far. This last side is dedicated my dear sister Y/N. I know you feel anxious now Y/N, don’t worry. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Hearing those words made your heartbeat slow down.

“Yeah I know. Why put someone who had nothing to do with it on these tapes? This is the same case with helmet. But truly Y/N, I love you. I hope you know I appreciate you helping me but honestly it wasn’t enough. Please know that this wasn’t your fault, I chose to do this and just be happy and move on for me please.“ Tears were streaming down your face at this point, your eyes puffy and your nose stuffed.

“I remember when we adopted you Y/N. I was 6 and you were 4 at the moment. God, I was so excited when I found out that you were gonna be my little sister. That day always brought up my mood. Y/N, you were the best sister I ever had, even though you were my younger sister.” She said laughing a little. “This wasn’t your fault, you deserve to live your life Y/N. I love you Y/N.” The tape stopped, and you sat calmly. You were relieved but also disappointed.

You spent the rest of the day, the tapes back in their shoebox and the box sat in your closet. You thought back on memories of you and Hannah. Her coming back and gushing to you about Justin Foely and her first kiss. Then everything went downhill. You thought that if something had changed you could’ve prevented all of it but you knew nothing would’ve changed. And you were ready to live with it.

What made Root and Shaw's relationship real for me was how Shaw would slowly let Root flirt with her and not say anything when we know with anyone else Shaw would've told them to fuck off, and that episode were Shaw's cover was blown and Root indirectly told her she cared about her and the surprise and vulnerability in Shaw's eyes said it all.

Fuck that word.

You had been friends with the one person you believe you had ever actually loved for two years. You had met through mutual friends, not really becoming friends for a couple of months. Harry Styles was exactly the kind of man that you had fallen for before. Kind, goofy, textbook gorgeous, and just down-to-earth. Being friends first was nice; the fact that you got to know him without any ill intentions was truly amazing. But now…
