Seaworld makes the choice to breed their captive orcas. Tilikum, the orca known infamously for killing his trainer Dawn Brancheau, is used as a sperm bank to impregnate the other female orcas held at Seaworld Orlando. He was captured at the age of about 3 years old in 1983 and has been held in captivity for thirty years. he was not “saved” when he was bought by Seaworld after Sealand closed, he was imprisoned by them.
Additionally, what are these whales even being saved from? Even if they did have extensive injuries it would not be difficult to reintegrate them to the ocean when they recuperated; provided that the orca pod could be located. Orcas make lifelong connections within their own pod. By imprisoning them with other orcas from different pods in tanks the equivalent of a bathtub to them, they are not creating genetic diversity or forming new bonds; they are having their connection to their families severed and being seriously displaced.
Orcas can swim one hundred miles per day. They eat an average of 30 kilograms of fish per day. In captivity they would be lucky to be fed two, and that’s only if they perform tricks correctly for a paying, oblivious audience. If they miss their mark they are not fed, as fish are used as incentive for them to do things that they would not do in the wild, such as wave at people or (prior to the Dawn Brancheau incident), allow people to ride on their back or launch them out of the water.
Seaworld is a cruel institution that does not have the best interests of “their” animals in mind, rather they are concerned with the money that they make. Buying a ticket to Seaworld is rewarding them for the kidnap and exploitation of animals and allows it to happen time and time again. Boycott Seaworld. Don’t buy that bloody ticket.
