Strawberry Torte with Cherries

I may look delicious, but…

This Mn-rich clinozoisite (the strawberry filling) with grossular garnets (cherries) topped with a mouth-watering whipped antigorite cream from Serres, Northern Greece, would break your teeth.

However, it’s extremely low in calories.

If you want to learn more about clinozoisite, I recommend you to the pages of gem collectors, who know a lot more about it than I do: http://www.minerals.net/gemstone/zoisite_gemstone.aspx

Hi, this is Debbie. Do you “draw” with crystals? As I was checking on the latest Winter storm forecasts this past weekend, I one again found myself using my crystals to “Think Spring.” Red Aventurine (Flower) Antigorite (Stem), Emerald (leaves) and a heart assortment all helped me think of brighter, warmer days to come. Oh, and the Pink Tourmaline body of the Butterfly also helped warm my heart!

73: Serpentine Group

Consisting of antigorite and chrysotile, both basic magnesium silicates with similar formula; chrysotile contains some iron.

Colour and Luster: Olive-green, black to yellowish green, brown, yellow, rarely white; greasy, waxy, silky (chrysotile); streak white.

Hardness: 3-5

Cleavage: None (chrysotile); perfect micaceous (antigorite).

Other Data: Specific gravity 2.5 to 2.6; fracture conchoidal (antigorite), uneven, splintery (chrysotile); brittle.

Crystals: Monoclinic; antigorite is unknown in crystals, usually massive, and appears cryptocrystalline. Chrysotile is fibrous; also lamellar and columnar; fibbers flexible and tough.

Best Field Marks: Low Hardness. Any rock mass of dark-green colour, hardness of 3 to 4, and a greasy feel may be suspected to contain the serpentine minerals. Chrysotile is soft and flexible.

Other: The name “serpentine” alludes to the surface pattern of serpentinite rock, which recalls the skin of a serpent. “Chrysotile” is from the Greek chrysos, “gold,” and tilos, “finer,” and antigorite is named after the locality of Antigorio in Italy. Some massive serpentinite rock is used for ornamental stone, and chrysotile asbestos has many industrial applications, including fireproof fabrics and brake linings.

SERPENTINE

Colour: mainly found in various shades of green, although can also be found in black, green, grey, lavender, orange, pink, or white.

Found in: numerous locations.China, UK.

This gemstone gets its name from the resemblance of its colour and markings to the skin of a snake. Highly valued marbles such as Connemara (Ireland) are mixtures of Serpentine and marble from Roman times used until well into the Middle Ages has been used to protect against disease and sorcery. “Fright stones” were carved from Serpentine into ugly faced amulets, which were supposed to protect against frightening things. It was also said to guard against poisonous creatures, regulate milk supply in nursing mothers, resolve conflicts and establishes boundaries. It is said to inspire respect for the elderly, longevity, retrieval of ancient wisdom and remembrance of past lives. In general, the Serpentine has the same effect as Jade. Attracts love and money. Serpentine is an excellent stone for meditation.

Said to be helpful for animals to keep fleas and ticks at bay. Also said to be helpful in regulating blood sugars when worn continually by a diabetes sufferer. Carry or wear this stone when suffering with a magnesium deficiency.

Chakra: Intuitive sources say Serpentine emits a profound healing vibration and facilitates the energetic activation of cellular regeneration. It is said to assist in opening the heart chakra.

Star sign: Scorpio, Gemini.

ANTIGORITE

Colour: a green or blue-green serpentine stone

Found in: Italy and Switzerland

Also known as Leaf Serpentine or Andes Jade.

China is the best place to find a pretty apple-green colour, some being white with a hint of green, and the darker greens being more valuable.  It is often passed off as jade in China but the simplest difference is that the antigorite can be scratched with a pocket knife.

Italy provides the emerald-green variety (Williamsite) as well as white-green which can contain pyrites, or pretty banded pink and green layers.

It is said to bring about caution.

Health:  Calming to the digestive tract. Reduces acidity and gas, particularly when under stress.

Hi everyone, this is Susan

This week’s animal totem is Giraffe - Farsightedness, Wise Communication, Gracefulness

Giraffe’s long neck symbolizes your ability to see far off into the future.  He is telling you that it is time that you let your intuition and foresight lead your way.  Your instincts are guiding you.  Are you following them?  Do you take action and follow through?  Have you become complacent?  Have you lost sight of the future?  Life will become less difficult when you set your sights for you path in life.  Giraffe is saying listen to your heart.

His long neck is also asking you if you are willing to stick your neck out and willing to take on a challenge.  He is asking you to start making new connections.  It is also telling you that you have a broader view of life.  Has your vision become to constricted or narrow?  Conversely, are you sticking your neck out for others or other things that will only hurt you in the end?  Can you remain above the chaos?

Giraffe is generally a quiet animal who seldom verbalizes sound.  Most of his communication is through body language.  He is telling you to be careful of what you say.  Are you able to balance silence with words?  Do you say too much?  Do you say too little?  Do you speak to the right person or the wrong person?  Do you make your words count?  Can you read someone else’s body language?  There is often power in silence for words can deflect our focus away from silent reflection.  He is also telling you to apply gracefulness and gentleness in your actions as they will always be apparent to others around you.

Crystals to help you remember the medicine of Giraffe are:

Antigorite

Cavansite

Citrine

Antigorite allows creativity to flow and intuition to bloom. It can enhance our ability to tell a fraud when we see it and gives the final push to move past the lies and begin to make positive changes in our lives a new start, so to speak.
