Workers oppose pact for US bases’ return to PH
Hundreds of workers led by national labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno marched to the US Embassy this afternoon to oppose the return of US bases to the country, condemning Pres. Noynoy Aquino’s announcement last Friday that an agreement for the said return is nearing completion.
The labor group said the agreement, which according to reports will be presented to US Pres. Barack Obama when he visits the country in April, is part of the US’ so-called “pivot to Asia” strategy and poses danger to Filipinos’ lives and properties and to the country’s environment.
“Aquino is desperately trying to outdo previous Philippine presidents when it comes to puppetry to the US. He tries to make it appear that the return of US military bases to the Philippines is part of efforts to help the country when it is part of the US’ geopolitical strategy,” said Elmer “Bong” Labog, KMU chairperson.
He condemned Aquino for trying to make it appear that the US military bases’ return to the country is a response to the Philippines’ territorial dispute with China and a preparation for possible natural disasters.
“Aquino wants to complete the Visiting Forces Agreement’s undoing of the victory won by the Filipino workers and people in 1991 when we kicked out the US military bases. We will fight his drive for the return of US military bases into the country,” Labog said.
The labor leader vowed to hold bigger and more militant protests when Obama visits the Philippines in April, saying the US’ chief executive is a war criminal and represents the top 1 per cent of the US.
“Aquino’s announcement comes at a time when the US is causing social unrest and violence in Venezuela to try to oust the democratically-elected government of Nicolas Maduro. Aquino is being a loyal US puppet in turning a blind eye to the Venezuelan people’s support for Maduro and opposition to US designs,” he added.
Labog also said that 28 years after the 1986 popular uprising against the Marcos dictatorship, the country remains captive to the dictates of the US and to the control of the US’ puppets among the Philippines’ political and economic elites.
