answer robot

I called the Trans Lifeline today.

I was having some issues with my parents, mostly my dad, and once they left the house, I grabbed the phone. The first time I called, no one answered. A robotic voice said something along the lines of “We’re sorry, no one is able to talk to you right now. Please try again later.” So I did. 10 minutes of petting my cat later, I tried again. I was met with someone who said ‘Welcome to the trans lifeline. How may I help you?’ and little me just went “….Hi. I’ve never done this before..” and they laughed and told me what the do- they’re a group of transgender people who will happily help any transgender person who calls. Its for crisis’s or just any issues. They will offer resources and will only call authorities if you give them permission. I introduced myself- my age, name and pronouns/identity. The man introduced himself at Jim (Or John, the connection was kind of bad), he was also transgender male, and we talked for a bit. I told him about my family and experiences, and he was very helpful. He gave me a few numbers in my state that are helpful for me, and I almost cried. We talked for about 20 minutes before my parents got home. I panicked and was like ‘Hnghn my parents are home I really need to go.” and he was like “Okay, Alex. Call back if you need to, I hope this was helpful.” He was totally used to people needed to go quickly, and I felt so much better.

I highly suggest calling this number if you need someone to talk to. It helped more than I thought it would.

10 Things I Learned as an Interviewer for the Interviewee

As a fourth year medical students (yikes) I was able to become an interviewer for my medical school. So yes, that means maybe someone I’ve interviewed may one day see this. Though probably not. Anyways, it was very surreal to be on the other side of the process all these years later and while I’m getting ready for interviews myself (anyone want me for residency, btw?)

A lot of expectations and previous notions about interviews that I had really did change and I can see how intricate the process actually is, and I get why we get asked the questions we do. At least somewhat better.

All experiences and interviewers are different but here are some things I think can really help out the interviewee. Maybe things you thought were hard and fast rules but aren’t or things you didn’t expect us to be looking for. Anything to help! And while this is directed at pre-meds, the advice should still general enough that anyone can use it, if they want.

Some things to know beforehand; I was part of a two-on-one interview setting which lasted 30 minutes with a few preset questions we needed to ask. The interview was blind, so we couldn’t see stats.

Take a second to observe your interviewers.

This isn’t an open invitation to judge your interviewers, but most of us are pretty telling in the way we present ourselves. If you can take a break for the nerves for a second pay attention to our introductions, our demeanor and how we’re dressed. It can give you a sense of how relaxed or stringent we may be and what our personalities may be like even if we were told to stay stone cold poker-faced. And always keep in mind who your interviewers are and what departments they’re from. It can help guide the tone we set for the entire interview.

Play off the interviewers.

Now that you’ve taken a moment to take in your surroundings use those to your advantage. If we’re playing tough, answer with strength and intention. If we’re relaxed, don’t sit so stiff and maybe get us to laugh. If you are asked thought provoking questions, take time to think about it and provide thought provoking answers. The more you work with us, the easy and more open a dialog becomes and the more personable the interview will become. It’s a great way to show flexibility and adaptation, and for the interviewers who did this well we found ourselves impressed.

If I’m offering you information, take it.

If I am telling you that I am a 4th year and I can answer your questions about rotations, classes, or student life I am literally giving you questions to ask me in the event you have forgotten all of yours. If faculty tells you which program they are a part of and what they specialize in they are opening that line of information for you. They are telling you were their interests and focuses are and you can run with that, if you like.

Please, please do your research.

We had an application who couldn’t tell us what they liked our school. Had no idea what the mission statement was or what the goals of the school were. Didn’t have a clue. I had to use my doctor face so I could stay neutral. It was bad. I get that you just want to be in medical school but come on. Point blank, there is no excuse for anyone to know nothing about the program they’re interviewing for. You should also have worked out answers for frequently asked questions. Getting stumped on classic medical school questions…it’s a big red flag. So please plan ahead and do your research.

Pick the length of your answers carefully.

Different types of questions prompt different types of answers. There are a lot of questions that can prompt follow up questions. Hobbies for example; going into every detail about your hobbies is probably counterproductive. But that’s assuming you have a fair amount of things you like to do that aren’t medicine. You can add a snip here and there, like “I’ve done that for 15 years” or “it’s really a huge passion of mine” but if there is interest in hearing more, we’ll most likely ask. If you only have one thing, don’t think “I like running” is a good enough answer. Give us something to work with. There are questions, especially theoretical ones or tell me a story situations that are meant to be longer. And always keep in mind your time limit.

Be confident, not cocky.

There is a huge difference between smug and confident. We had one prospect who gave this shit-eating “gotcha” grin after every question they thought they had aced. It was almost like they were trying to directly challenging me. It got to the point that I stopped caring what they were saying and was just getting pissed. The answers could have been great (they weren’t) but all that stuck with me was the cockiness. Not sure if you do that unintentionally? That’s what practice interviews are for. There are very clear differences when someone was proud of an answer and were pleased, and what this individual was doing. And if you do act that way, personally, I don’t want you representing my school, regardless of what your application looks like.

I don’t care about the “right” answer. I care why.

I know there are certain questions answers that are kind of set in stone. And I know straying too far from say, an ethics question, is hard to do in a new and unique way. The way to make yourself stand out from the crowd is to explain the reasons why you believe this to be the “right” answers since those tend to differ among applicants and shows your critical thinking skills past “well obviously this is the right answer”. Aside from that most interviewers don’t have specific expectations for most questions. We’d rather just hear about you and your personal experiences, honestly.

We’re not always looking for your spoken answer.

Sometimes we’re looking at your body language. I will purposefully ask questions I know there are only a few answers too. Not because I want to know if you know it, but rather how you viscerally respond. Do you look uncomfortable when answering an ethics or grades question? Did you answer robotically? Are you still looking at me? Can you pick yourself back up after a rough question? What you do speaks just as loud as the things your saying and I’m looking for it.

Use your personality and responses to show you want to be here. Not your grades.

This was not an isolated event. I had a few prospective students speak about a class and sneak in “which I got an A in” and continue. Not really a fan of that. I naturally assume that everyone we interviewed had good enough grades and scores because, well, you’re at the interview. At this point in the process all I want if for you to shine beyond those things and prove to me that you can be a doctor on paper and in person.

Make me feel connected to you.

In the end, I want to feel like I know who you are. I want to know what you stand for and I want to experience the person who wants to become a physician. I want to appreciate your story and how far you’ve come. We don’t need to become best friends, we don’t need to have similar thoughts or values or personalities. But I want to feel like we could understand each other now and in the future. Let me be excited about you and for you. Let me want you to be here so I can check accept.

I hope someone was able to get something useful from this because for all of you here dying to enter this crazy profession I want you to reach your goals. I really do, and I’m just doing all I can on the internet. Good luck to everyone on your interviews!

A/N: so this isn’t based off of any request, I was just inspired to write this fic. hope you enjoy!

“It’ll be like old times,” Betty said, hopeful eyes staring at Archie.

“The three musketeers,” he laughed.  Betty bit her lip, her smile slightly fading.

“Actually, Archie,” she corrected, “there were four of us.”

“(Y/N)!” a newly-turned six year old Archie exclaimed.  "I didn’t think you were gonna come!“

"Of course I came!” (Y/N) giggled, stepping into the Andrews house.  "You’re my best friend.“ Archie pulled (Y/N) into a hug.

"You’re my best friend too, (Y/N),” he grinned.

“Yeah, four of us,” Archie muttered, turning away from Betty. She frowned, realizing she reopened that wound too soon.

“I’m sorry Archie, I didn’t mean-”

“It’s fine, Betty,” Archie grimaced.

“No, I shouldn’t have brought it up,” she apologized.

“But there were four of us,” Archie admitted.  "I guess I was just trying to forget the fourth.“

"Why do we only come here when they play this movie?” ten year old (Y/N) questioned, gesturing towards the movie playing on the Twilight Drive-In screen.  Archie shrugged, wrapping his arm around (Y/N)’s shoulders.

“Because it’s my favorite,” he replied.  (Y/N) rolled her eyes.

“Don’t you want to watch something else for a change?” she asked, looking up at him with a smile.  "You know, discover something new?“

"No,” Archie refused her suggestion, immaturely shaking his head.  "I like things just the way they are.“

Archie couldn’t get (Y/N) out of his head for the rest of the day.  Throughout school, and after school during the preparations for Jughead’s party, Archie’s mind kept going back to (Y/N).  For two years, he had blocked out all memories of her.  Now, she was pictured clear in his mind.  Her memory was haunting him, and Archie could do nothing but push through the day as if nothing was wrong.

"Archie,” (Y/N) whimpered, standing on his front porch.  He ran out towards her and enveloped her in a hug as soon as he reached her.

“What?” he asked, burying his face into her hair.  "What’s wrong?“  (Y/N) gripped onto his t-shirt, her hands desperately holding onto her best friend.

"I’m moving,” she sobbed.  "I’m moving next month.“  Archie’s arms dropped, and he took a step back.

"Moving?” he echoed.  "But what about 8th grade?“  (Y/N) helplessly shrugged, tears continuing to roll down her cheeks.  "It’s our last year before high school. We were gonna…”  The rest of Archie’s sentence was stuck in his throat.

“I know,” she cried.  "I know, Archie. You think I wanted this?“  He frantically shook his head.

"No, no, of course not.”

“We’re leaving in July,” she explained.  "I tried to convince my parents not to move, or at least to leave me behind.“

"You could stay with us,” Archie offered.  A bittersweet smile creeped onto (Y/N)’s lips.

“I know,” she said. “I told them that.”

“Jesus, (Y/N),” Archie mumbled as he stumbled into his bedroom, ignoring the party going on downstairs.  "(Y/N).“  He repeated her name over and over again, reminiscing on the way her name felt on his tongue.  All the memories that he had hidden away from himself came tumbling back, and he was suddenly overwhelmed with emotions that he had forgotten how they felt.  He frustratedly tugged at his hair, struggling to cope with his feelings.  Her sparkling eyes and joyous laugh were still engraved in the back of his mind.  How could he ever forget?  "God, (Y/N), I’m so sorry.”  He continued to drunkenly pace around his room, head spinning with memories of (Y/N).  Every moment they shared, every hug they had, every chance he missed to tell her he loved her.  He missed every single opportunity he had to tell her.  "I should’ve told her,“ he moaned.  An idea lit up in Archie’s mind, so he began to search his room.  He tossed clothes and blankets aside until he found his phone laying on his nightstand.  He picked it up and immediately dialed (Y/N)’s number by memory.

"I’m sorry, this number no longer exists,” the monotonous robot answered his call.  Archie screamed out in frustration, throwing his phone across his room against the wall.

“I want to talk to her!” he screamed, punching his bed.  "I need her!“

"Archie?” Veronica called out as she cautiously his room.  He paused his rampage as he turned to face the raven-haired girl.

“What?” he snapped.

“You’re making a lot of noise,” Veronica ignored the bite in his voice.  "I wanted to make sure you’re okay.“

"I’m not…” he clutched his head, sitting down on his bed, “I’m not okay.  She’s gone.”

“Who?” Veronica questioned, sitting next to Archie.

“(Y/N),” he moaned.  "(Y/N)’s gone.“

"Who’s that?” Veronica asked.  Archie glared at her and stood up, stepping away from her.

“I loved her,” he whispered, flopping back onto his bed.  Veronica frowned.  "God, I should’ve left Riverdale when my mom offered.“

"But then we would’ve never met,” Veronica quipped.  "And that, Archiekins, would be a tragedy of epic proportions.“  She glanced at his lips, then back up to his eyes.  Leaning in, she connected her lips with his.  It only lasted a moment before Archie pulled away.

"No, Veronica,” he stopped her.  "I’m sorry, but… you’re not her.“

"I’m sorry,” she apologized.  "That was stupid and selfish of me, I shouldn’t have-“

"It’s fine,” Archie interrupted her.  "It’s not your fault, I just… the wound is still kinda fresh, you know?“  Veronica nodded.

"She sounds lovely,” she offered.  "Can you tell me about her?“  Archie inhaled deeply.

"We were best friends,” he started, and a smile already grew on his face.  "Our parents were good friends, so we knew each other since birth.  We were two peas in a pod.  Then we met Jughead and Betty, and we became the four musketeers.  We’d do everything together.  But (Y/N) and I were still the closest.“

"When did you fall in love with her?” Veronica inquired.

“I think I always was,” Archie answered truthfully.  Veronica sighed; she knew there was no competing with even the memory of (Y/N).  "But I don’t think I realized it until I kissed her.“

"Did you know some people have already had their first kiss?” (Y/N) asked Archie as she sat on a swing.

“Like who?” he questioned.  They were eleven.

“I heard Cheryl kissed someone,” (Y/N) shrugged.  "I don’t know who though.“

"She could be lying,” Archie said.

“Josie, too,” (Y/N) interjected.

“Maybe they kissed each other,” Archie laughed, and (Y/N) giggled with him.  Once their laughs died down, they swung in silence.

“Who do you want to be your first kiss?” (Y/N) broke the silence.

“I don’t know,” Archie shrugged.  "What about you?“

"There’s not really anyone I want to kiss,” she answered.  "The only good guys in Riverdale are you and Jughead.“

"Would you kiss Jughead?”

“Ew, no!” she squealed.  "Jughead is like my brother!“

"Am I a brother to you?” Archie asked.  (Y/N) grew quiet and shrugged.

“You’re my best friend, Arch,” she responded.

“So does that mean you would kiss me?” he smirked.  (Y/N) blushed.

“Would you kiss me?” she countered, causing Archie to blush.  They both grew quiet, each embarrassed by the thought of kissing each other.

“I’d want you to be my first kiss,” he said.  (Y/N)’s head snapped up to look at Archie.

“Really?” she asked.  He nodded.  "I want you to be my first kiss too.“

"What if…” Archie nervously stuttered, “What if we did it now?  Like, kiss each other.  Just so that we’re definitely each other’s first kiss.”  (Y/N) pretended to contemplate it for a moment, but she already knew her answer.

“Sure,” she agreed nonchalantly.  Her heart was about to beat out of her chest.  Archie jumped off of the swing and stepped towards (Y/N).  Both of their eyes fluttered closed, and they pressed their lips against each other’s.  They pulled apart a second after, a blush spreading across both of their cheeks.  Archie hopped back onto the swing next to (Y/N).  Neither of them spoke about the kiss.

“Do you think she knew?” Veronica asked.  Archie raised a puzzled eyebrow.  "Do you think she knew that you loved her?“ she elaborated.  Archie shrugged.

"Maybe,” he responded.  "I hope so.  I never told her, though.  God, I should’ve told her.“

"Hey,” Veronica reached a comforting hand out towards Archie.  "Don’t beat yourself up over it.  From what you told me, it sounds like she knew.“

"You think so?”

“I do,” Veronica nodded.  "And from what I can tell, I think she loved you too.“

Hi, hm, I sent an ask a while ago, but I think tumblr ate it, so I'm sending it again. 😅 Sooo, a while ago you said something about the FFF AU that got me thinking... You said that their world is ruled by Google, right? ...did you mean Google as in the company or as in the ego? 😅

I thought I answered this but I was wrong that was a different question

Yes, the company Google rules the world, but they’re not as cool of a company as they are in this universe. And google owns youtube. (and in this universe, the entire entertainment industry)

So, people already let Google home and Echo into their house. But hey, a powerful company like that could instead issue out a massive army of personal robots for answering questions and doing whatever you ask. What a glorious invention! Everyone must have a Google IRL in their home!

Everyone must have a Google IRL in their home at all times.

What does becoming a lich feel like?

Lup never believed in balance, because if there was supposed to be some sort of universal balance, then she wanted to walk up to its god and ask what the hell she and her brother had done to deserve a childhood like the one they got. But Barry, her beloved nerd scientist, explained that there’s only definitely a balance in some things, and becoming a lich is one of those.

Most liches become the way they are through an act of unspeakable evil, he’d claimed. Massacring a town, committing a personal betrayal, etc. Prep work for becoming - quite literally - a heartless husk. Liches whittle down their souls, slowly, painfully, and then complete the ritual and become undead and gain power or glory or wealth or whatever they’re going for.

In this regard, Barry and Lup are different. In fact, as far as Barry knows, they’re completely unique. They don’t want power, or glory, and neither one of them particularly gives a shit about riches. Cheesy as it sounds, it’s for love. It’s for the love of the plane they lost, for thousands of souls they don’t yet know, for the crew that has become closer-knit than family. For their love of each other.

The pain of atrocities and severing bonds and isolating themselves - they skip that part.

So, Barry explains, equivalent exchange: the act of becoming a lich, while normally electrifying and awe-inducing and generally not-horrible, is probably gonna be pretty fucking painful for them.

Lup did not tell Taako this. She didn’t need to peek beneath the table to know his legs were shaking.

She just hopes that, when she does go lich, he won’t be able to tell.

They make their plans, talk them over, finalize them, and finally mount that grassy hill on which they will draw their last breaths as complete, living beings. Taako trails behind them, abnormally quiet, and Lup finds herself praying to whoever does preside over balance that there isn’t some twin bullshit that will make Taako hurt during this, too. The less he knows about the hell Lup will be going through in, oh, two minutes, the better.

One minute left. She pulls Taako into a hug and does her best to convince herself it’s not a goodbye. She hugs Barry too, for shits, because if they mess this up they’re going to die. She’s not a fool - if one of them fails, the other one goes, too. They’re both anchored to each other. It’s do or die, baby.

The physical ritual passes in a blur. At this point it requires no concentration; they’ve practiced with fake materials so often that Lup moves almost mechanically.

The final component clicks into place, and Lup’s is burning

Black flames tear through her, shrivelling and reforming her skin at the same time, hundreds of possible forms overlaying and ripping through each other, vying for dominance, and gods above it’s all Lup can do to hold on, to think of Barry next to her and Taako, her beloved brother, terrified on that same grassy hilltop.

If she had a mouth, she’d be screaming; but she doesn’t, and she’s grateful.

The flame passes just as quickly as it had come, and awareness returns to her slowly as the last of the pain crumbles out of her like ashes. She feels herself floating in midair, looking down at grass, dazed. Her first impression is of the draining agony, and then she feels a whispery presence near her, which her mind pegs as another lich before she consciously processes the feeling. It’s a comforting presence and it grounds her, just a little more. She blinks without eyes.

She looks up, and Taako is shaking.

She does the only thing she can think of, torn between laughing and crying - she dabs.

And through red-raw eyes, he smiles.
