― How to write an essay as an undergraduate history student

These are general guidelines to help undergraduate students write better essays. *Note that every assignment is different. You should take the time to closely read the instructions and meet with your Professor if necessary. I hope you will find these useful and good luck writing your papers!

B E F O R E   Y  O U   S T A R T

  • Make sure that you have closely read the instructions as presented by your Professor. There are many different types of historical essays (argumentative essays, historiographical reviews and so on). It is imperative that your style is adapted to the type of essay you are required to write.
  • Gather all your information. Some Professors want students to write essays using only class material, others expect them to do more research.  If the latter, make sure to gather all (most) of your information beforehand. If you are a university student, you  have access to a library and many academic journals. Use this access and make sure to ask librarians for help when needed.
  • Take careful notes as you are reading in preparation for your essay. If your Professor provided a specific question, make sure to read critically for information that is susceptible to help you answer this question. If your Professor has not assigned a question, you should still read carefully and try to find the different ways in which historians address certain issues.
  • Some students prefer not to plan essays, others do. I suggest planning as it may be the best way to map out your ideas and begin forming an argument. It is impossible to cover all the facets of a problem in one essay, therefore, planning your essay may be the easiest way to make sure your work covers important aspects of a given issue. Planning will also help ensure that all your arguments remain connected and support a central claim.
  • Find a few (preferably history) essays that you find well-written and pay special attention to their structure. While you should be careful never to be so inspired as to be tempted to copy (this is a very serious academic offence) the goal of this exercise is to find more academic vocabulary and see how it is used by actual scholars.

W H E N    W R I T I N G

  • If your Professor gave you a question to answer in advance, make sure you answer this question and this question only. While you should always supply your arguments with pertinent examples, these should be succinct and focus on the main contention debated in your essay.
  • Make sure your essay has a thesis statement (yes, even when you are asked to answer a question). Your Professor should know from the very beginning of your essay what you will be arguing and what position you will take. All subsequent paragraphs until your conclusion should serve to better make the case for your thesis.
  • Try to follow the “classical” essay model, that is: introduction, body and conclusion.
  • Began each paragraph with a topic sentence announcing the focus of the next few lines. Conclude the paragraph by rephrasing the main idea and possibly by trying to make a connection with the next body of text.
  • Always bring evidence to support your arguments. This evidence may come from the work of other historians are from a passage of a primary document. Whatever the case may be, make sure that your arguments are solidly built and “defended”.
  • Introductions and conclusions are (usually) not optional. Your introduction should help the reader understand what the text will argue and how it will proceed to do so, while your conclusion finishes the text by summarising key points and perhaps even making a suggestion for future studies. (An additional tip may be to write a simple introduction at the beginning and then rewriting it when the essay is finished. Once you are satisfied with your introduction, you may copy and paste it as your conclusion making necessary adjustments and avoiding copying the exact sentence structure. The point here is to use your introduction as a guide to write your conclusion.)
  • Be precise, you are writing a history paper, dates and names matter.
  • Be clear and concise but make sure that all your points are well-developed.

G E N E R A L   T I P S

  • Locate your argument in historiography. As a historian in training, it is important that you show your Professor that you understand there are debates regarding specific interpretations. It is also important that you demonstrate that your line of argumentation is supported by the work of experienced researchers. Even if your essay primarily focuses on primary document analysis, surely some have analysed this text or object before, make sure to mention these scholars and their contributions to the debate.
  • Citations should be used wisely. As said before, it is important to ground your argument in the work of other historians. In this sense, citations are immensely useful. That being said, depending on the length of your paper, too many citations may suggest laziness as you have made little efforts paraphrasing. A few carefully selected and well-integrated quotes in your paper should do the trick.
  • Unless prohibited (for some odd reason) by your Professor, use footnotes to give additional information. Using footnotes to engage in discussions that are important but that otherwise cannot find their place in your text will show your Professor that you had a strong command of the topic at hand. It is also the best place to suggest further readings.

Rhys looks haunted.

“Who’s going to tell them?”

He gets nothing but avoided eye contact and silent sips of coffee in return.

“I am completely serious. Someone has to say something and it really shouldn’t be me.”

He had thought that all nine of them of them taking a weekend together in the cabin would be fun–and it had been, until he’d been kept up very late by the half-muffled sounds coming from Elain and Lucien’s room. Not of sex, per say; the cabin provides what soundproofing it can, and it should be enough for all the couples to enjoy themselves without bothering each other, but Elain and Lucien had been doing something… loud. Repeatedly.

Cassian is grinning like a maniac, amused beyond all reason. “Okay, I know Rhys is uncomfortable because he’s never done anything that actually qualifies as kinky, but does anyone else think this is hilarious?”

“I object to that profiling of my sex life, Cassian.”

“You’ve never done anything weirder with Feyre than a blindfold,” Cassian says, eyebrows raised, “I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, I’m just saying.”

“A blindfold is very kinky,” Rhys asserts, affronted. Mor snorts and he ignores it, focused on Cassian. “What have you two done that’s so much more exciting?”

Nesta, sitting straight as a queen, speaks before Cassian can. “If you answer that question in front of all our friends, Cas, you will never get to do any of those things ever again.”

“We’re off topic,” Feyre announces, setting down her mug of tea decisively. “The question at hand here is who is going to tell Elain and Lucien that spanking is off-limits during their time here.” Silence. She shrugs. “I think it should be Nesta.”

“I’ll do it if you want, but it won’t go well,” Nesta replies flatly. “I have a hard time not slapping the smirk off Lucien’s face on a good day.”

Cassian brandishes a spoonful of oatmeal. “Well, apparently he’s into that, so–”

“Why not Cassian?” Rhys says pointedly, “Since, as he tells us, he’s so knowledgeable about the whole area.”

“That would mortify Elain,” Feyre says, keeping them firmly on track. “It should probably be one of the girls.” Amren, in the corner, lowers her mug of blood to look less than enthused. “It should be Mor or I,” Feyre amends.

Mor gives an casual little shrug. “The noise didn’t bother me, to be honest.”

Rhys frowns in disbelief. “Surely you heard it.”

“We did.”

She does not elaborate, and Rhys suddenly finds it suspicious how quiet Azriel’s been, and how he’s not making eye contact. Cassian seems to have the same thought as he glances between the two of them.

“Mother’s tits,” Cassian says, gaping. “You guys got off on it, didn’t you?”

They don’t respond, but Mor reddens incriminatingly. Cassian’s eyes go wide and he throws his head back in a howl of laugher, over Nesta’s protestations.

Amren is surveying all of them with disdain. “I have been present for some truly insipid conversations between the lot of you but I must say, this one is exceptionally awful.”

“Now THAT’S what I mean by kinky, Rhys” Cassian proclaims, wiping tears from his eyes. “Fucking to the sounds of another couple’s pain play. Cauldron. I’m so proud.”

Rhys looks long-suffering as he turns to Feyre, takes her hand, and kisses it sweetly. “I’m so sorry, darling,” he intones dramatically. “I’ve exposed you to a nest of perverts.”

“Who’s a pervert?” Elain asks with a giggle, choosing this moment to sweep into the kitchen, bright-eyed and with a sated-looking Lucien in her wake. “Are we talking about Cassian again?”

But the whole room has gone silent. Elain falters, looking from one awkward face to the next. “What’s wrong?”

When no one answers, it’s Amren who gets up and says baldly to the two of them, “Everyone from here to Velaris could hear whatever it was you were doing last night. It made these fools uncomfortable, largely. Do with that information what you will.” In the shocked silence following, she puts her empty mug in the sink, unhurried, and heads for the door. “I’m going for a walk far away from this nonsense. If anyone needs me, you are encouraged to reconsider.”

The door slams shut behind her.

“Oh,” Elain says faintly.

theres been at least a few posts about when hiveswap comes out, then popular youttubers will play it and/or theorise about it and possibly read homestuck and/or make homestuck popular again, but

would the redux homestuck fandom misinterpret the charactters in the same way as the 2012-14 homestuck fandom? or will they misinterpret them in a different way. will they make up new shitty names for the charactters? what will be their new karkles or david elizabeth strider?? if older hs fans are still here when the redux hs fandom arrives, will there be huge discourse between them??? who fucking knows. im terrified

Since I just took a speaking exam and I have another next week I thought i would write some advice for language speaking exams. I find the speaking exams the hardest part of learning a language and I got very stressed before my German speaking which affected my performance. Some of the advice will be general whilst other parts might be focused on GCSE level.

1. Before the Exam
- you have to get to the exam at least 15 before, use this time to recite your presentation to yourself and any key phrases you want to remember. The quiet conditions will help.
-if you have a roleplay section, look over the card and come up with what you want to say and make sure you understand what is being asked and what you must do.
-keep calm! This is very important (and also very difficult) but can really help you. Take deep breaths and focus - my teacher allowed us to bring a stress ball or soft toy to help relax us, but ask your teacher beforehand whether that is okay.

2. Roleplay
- the roleplay can be the easiest part of the exam.
- read the top of the roleplay card very carefully, it will include details of what the roleplay is about and the information could be needed later in the roleplay.
- the words in the questions can often be recycled in your answer!
- you can get all 3 marks by answering the question in short incomplete sentences, you don’t need to use perfect language, for example replying by just saying ‘2 people’ can get you all the marks!

2. Presentation/ Speech
- talk slowly and make the words clear but get into a natural flow.
- if you are allowed a memo card with words on it, make them the start of each sentence or paragraph so they can prompt you.
- the teacher will ask you questions about the topic afterwards so prepare before and come up with some questions they could ask you. Phrases which can be adapted to different questions work well.

4. General conversation
-you will usually cover 2-3 topics (gcse)
- the teacher should announce the topic of conversation before they ask you a question, so listen carefully to what they are saying.
- learn set phrases which can be used in any topic and also sentence started which can play for time while you think of an answer.
-Learn how to say ‘sorry, I don’t understand the question’ and 'please can you repeat that’. These phrases are very good so you can have the question asked again and you will get marks for asking in the correct language.
- even saying 'I don’t know’ in the language is better than saying nothing at all.

Once the exam is over, however it went, just remember that it’s done and you won’t have to do it again!
It’s only 10-15 minutes of your life and will be over very quickly.

Final reminder:
Your teacher is on your side and they want you to do well. They will try to stretch you to get a good grade but talk to them if you are nervous and they will help you.

Well that’s about it. If you have anything to add, feel free. I hope everyone does well in all their language exams !!! 📚💪🏻

Alex Danvers Week - Free Day

I’ve been trying to write this for so long and it’s never felt quite right, but since it’s Alex Danvers Week I thought I may as well have a go. Very angsty, cw for grief, self harm, suicidal ideation.

Thanks to @all-the-gay-feels for reading a draft a while back. Also thanks to @alexdanversnetwork for organising the week!

In the corner of her high school library, walled in by textbooks, she can almost forget about it all.

She can almost forget how she’ll have to help Kara with her homework tonight, before sorting through bills and making a dinner that Eliza will never thank her for, and then maybe, maybe, finally finishing her history essay before she falls asleep at her desk.

She can almost forget that the memories of him are waiting for her at home, in every corner of the house, the size of corpses.

But even reading about black holes, about the lives and deaths of stars, feels too close. Close like when she’s half asleep in the morning, and she can almost hear the hallway floor creak under his feet, smell his coffee in the kitchen as he reads the paper.

But when she wakes, the grief comes to her brass-knuckled, and the silence that rips through the house is as real and raw as a howl.
