Why Ghost Hunt Is Great And Everyone Should Watch It: A Summary

It’s basically all of those ghost investigation shows only good.

The writers do their research into parapsychology and occult history and phenomena. They don’t just make shit up like pretty much every other supernatural horror series does.

Multiple religions and cultures are portrayed very earnestly and tastefully, with very little relying on stereotype. The Buddhist Monk, Shinto Preistess, and Catholtic Preist characters are all treated with respect and authority to their beliefs.

The main character gets called out and schooled on having had an Imperalist Japanese education. The tense history between China, Japan and particularly Hong Kong is brought up and not shied away from.

On that note all the main characters are shown to have their flaws and faults and short-comings.

When the main character discovers she has supernatural ability, she is automatically aware of the responsibilities and consequences these powers come with. She is regularly taken to task for using her powers when she doesn’t fully understand them. A character that could have been a ‘sue is instead given depth and development. It’s a lot like Pretear that way.

There are some great twists on old horror tropes– the reasons and explainations that come up for a lot of the hauntings are unique and unexpected (again, because the writers do their research.)

The Nightmare Fuel is counterpointed with some genuinely sweet, funny and heartwarming moments.

The writers are totally cool with letting side characters steal the spotlight or the scene.

There’s a lot of social commentary throughout the series that other series would shy away from. The main characters argue and disagree in some pretty horrendous ways because of this, and it’s handled fantastically.

Please watch Ghost Hunt, you’ll thank me.

Hi I'm new to anime & I trust and admire u!!! What do u recommend??

Hey there! and yeeesss, i’m so glad you’re gonna give anime a try! there are so many good stories and plots in anime which dont exist in western media so it’s a great mode of entertainment! so as for recs, lemme copy and paste my previous list and update it to answer your question!

Currently watching:

Boku no Hero Academia - it’s a recent anime and it’s really good! i think it’s on course to becoming a really big anime that will last many seasons at this rate. the story is about a world where majority of the inhabitants are heroes cause they have quirks (powers).. and the premise is that the main character doesnt have one but he wants to be a hero so watch and see how the story unfolds!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures (currently on 2nd arc) - macho anime with an excellent plot! the guys are hot and bara af haha and many of the memes are in japanese so watch the original subbed but if you prefer not to read, the dub isnt bad. it’s very memey but the story is really entertaining and has unpredicable moments

One Punch Man - a parody of a superhero anime. tbh this isnt really binge-watch material cause it’s like a running gag and the story unfolds after episode 5 so i’ve just been watching this during my cardio days in the gym. but it’s really funny and a good anime

Hunter X Hunter - this anime is popular and it’s about hunters. so the beginning has the protagonist wanting to be a hunter and then he meets some fellow hunters along the way. it’s one of the highest rated anime in MyAnimeList (the RottenTomatoes equivalent of the anime world) so yeah check this out!

Recently watched:

  • Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan - it’s the Game of Thrones of anime imo.. like it’s so GOOD.. it will just make you gag after every episode!!! it’s so intense and there are really badass characters. and the plot is really brilliant. like if you think season 1 was like WHAT THE FUCkk.. wait til season 2! this anime is crazy and exciting. not for the faint-hearted tbh cause it can be graphic and disturbing (also dont get attached. they could die!) but yeah, this anime is popular true and some say it’s overrated but that’s because it really deserves all the recognition and success it has for its amazing plot
  • Love Live! School Idol Project - i honestly just watched this like out of curiosity and just for kicks. i was not expecting to love it but after episode 3, i was like wait??? wasnt this anime supposed to be fun?? why am i crying?? so yeah, it’s super good, touching, entertaining and sweet! and the songs are really catchy and good.. TBH this anime is like so gay since there are no men (except Honoka’s dad) so yeah it passes the Bechdel Test with perfect score
  • Love Live! Movie - the conclusion to the anime!
  • Love Live! Sunshine - i watched this like a few months after finishing Love Live! cause i loved the original girls and i was worried i wont like these girls.. but honestly, you will appreciate them. and it’s EVEN GAYER.. and is soo good too!
  • btw tell me who your fave girls/best girls are after watching Love Live and Sunshine. my best girls are Umi Sonoda and Yo Watanabe :>

Anime watched/finished:

  • Kimi no Na Wa - universally lauded and recently released! it’s the best film released in 2016 imo. i swear it’s really next level storytelling
  • Rurouni Kenshin - i think i watched this anime twice/thrice.. It’s so suspenseful. it’s about samurais. and this anime made me interested about Japan’s history. it’s kind of a period drama with amazing fight sequences. and it’s critically acclaimed. it’s my father’s all-time favourite anime
  • Rurouni Kenshin OVA - it’s a prequel. also more violent and tragic than its anime counterpart.. like it’s really different from the series. but it’s so good. you’ll find out how Kenshin got his iconic X mark from here!)
  • Ghost Stories - THE DUB IS A MASTERPIECE! THE SUBBED IS SHIT. TRUST ME. the DUB is the popular one too cause it’s the superiour version. You really have to see this one. the anime bombed in Japan so the english dubbers got all the rights for the anime and they gave the go signal for the dubbers to do whatever the fuck they want and the end result is fucking hilarious. it shits on the Scary Movie Franchise tbh
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica - i swear do not be deceived.. it is a really intense and surprisingly dark anime with excellent plot twists
  • Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - super funny anime. if you need a laugh, this will really lift you up. i watched the first two episodes in sub and dub back to back.. and i can vouch that the voice actors for the English dub are excellent. it’s actually even funnier.. but if you prefer subs, then that’s fine. it’s just the lines are more humorous, expressive and have more variety :) Nozaki’s voice is also attractive in the dub.. it’s still very Nozaki imo. this anime pokes fun at the shoujo manga yet still has romantic elements. it’s mostly comedy though
  • Jigoku Shoujo / Hell Girl - angst, tragedy, philosophical anime analysing humanity’s hatred, need for vengeance, and suffering. Futakomori or the 2nd season is my favourite but it’s worth finishing the entire series. 3rd season is very painful to watch though and you dont have to watch that one tbh if you dont want to lol
  • Yu Yu Hakusho - occult, spirit world, ghosts, and fighting. you most probably have heard of this
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - 1st series starring Yugi. iconic!
  • Digimon - can be very intense! better than Pokemon imo
  • Cardcaptor Sakura - this is also suspenseful. like the premise is essentially that Sakura has to catch all the “monsters” that were freed from this book. and it’s up to her to “capture” them and put into cards. magic, fantasy, and beautiful animation
  • Ranma ½ - this was so funny but the ending was disappointing cause it got cancelled apparently.. i really hope this will go out of limbo and give us a proper ending like InuYasha did but i doubt it
  • Danganronpa (murder plot twists, intense and despair-filled storyline. click this to know more about the premise. it’s like Battle Royale meets CSI meets How To Get Away With Murder. btw i highly suggest you play this game (it’s available on Steam) instead of watching the poorly condensed anime. so buy it on steam or you can download it how you like cause it’s one of the best games ever. and if you plan on watching this, there is no Danganronpa 2 anime so yeah just play the first game tbh. here’s a trailer of the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwJeZPMhdUk. if ya dont wanna play the games then you can watch the anime. and after watching this, here’s a link of the playthrough of the 2nd game. it’s super fun, full of plot twists, and interactive)
  • Yuri On Ice - it’s a really cute gay anime. people will argue it isnt and its queerbait but i’m gay and alot of the things which happen are too much for just bros to do so yeah, i believe it’s canon gay or mlm. and i enjoyed it so you watch it and be the judge
  • Blood+ - vampires and sword fighting
  • Ghost In The Shell - it’s a sci-fi movie
  • Yakitate Japan - baking and cooking!
  • Getbackers - still up to debate if the duo are gay but if you google art of them, there have been official art released and it’s so gay lol. but yeah it’s shonen genre and it’s not canon gay
  • Cowboy Bebop - a CLASSIC. the dub is great!!

I don’t remember if i finished these but I watched a lot of episodes enough to recommend it and will rewatch them soon to relieve memories. I’m pretty sure I tuned in though and watched like 80%:

  • Fushigi Yuugi (i think this is shoujo but it has a nice adventure storyline)
  • Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood  (i feel like i actually finished this. idk why my memory is hazy concerning this anime. this is so popular. you should’ve heard of this iconic anime somehow. i watched and tuned in but i don’t remember how or when i stopped)
  • Gundam series (i think i finished the first Gundam and the second)
  • Tsubasa Chronicles (it’s like a spin-off of Cardcaptor Sakura but they’re like all grown up and the plot is different)
  • Naruto
  • One Piece (i watched like the first four seasons)
  • Bleach (i remembered watching until episode 40 omg)
  • Great Teacher Onizuka (this is so funny tbh. i think i watched almost all of it)

Studio Ghibli films I watched:

  • Spirited Away
  • The Wind Rises
  • Ponyo
  • Tales from Earthsea

Anime I plan to watch (many suggested this to me and i plan on watching them so i’ll write them down here) :

  • Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice)
  • Anohana The Flower We Saw That Day
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Tokyo Ghoul
  • Re: Zero
  • Your Lie in April
  • Shin sekai Yori
  • Gintama
  • More of Makoto Shinkai’s movies like 5 centimetres per second, etc.)
  • More Ghibli films too
  • Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive (after i finish FFXV game im watching this one)
  • Persona 4

Here you go!!!! I know it’s an extensive list. I’ll probably make this a masterpost of anime recs and will update this list, and add more soon. If you have any questions or anything, don’t be shy to message me! :)

Please Watch Shin Sekai Yori

a plea by me, tumblr user findingschmomo

Shin Sekai Yori (Also known as From the New World) is a fantastic anime that little people know about and it deserves to be more popular. So hopefully by the end of this post I’ll have convinced a few of you to go check it out.

First of all, whats this anime even about?

Shin Sekai Yori takes place 1000 years in the future, in a world where everyone can use telepathy. Their society is the product of this new ability. The story follows the lives of a group of children as they grow up and learn about the world they were born into and the dark secrets it holds. In fact, we follow their lives and progression from the age of 12 to their late twenties.

The artwork is also fantastic. The animation is usually superb.

The greatest part of Shin Sekai Yori though is the world that it has developed, and the puzzle that the children and viewer piece together at the same time as they discover the darkness within this new society. Plus, there is no wrong in Shin Sekai Yori in a traditional sense. No one is right. No one is wrong. It’s the kind of story that is conflicting for the viewer. It does not put you at easy. It does not offer easy answers but provides difficult questions. It’s the kind of show that spawns discussion on what humanity even means.

Also of note: Canon Bisexuality. The characters in this show explore their sexuality, and it’s not looked down upon. It’s integral to the relationships they build with each other. But its portrayed as something normal and that is honestly refreshing.

I don’t really want to talk about all the things that I adore about this show because that would ruin it. The best thing is to go in blind and immerse yourself into the world this show creates. And to figure it out yourself.

One last thing though, unlike most shows, the ending to this anime is honestly the best part of the series. It sticks with you. It fucks you up in more ways than one. It leaves an impact. It makes everything worth it. When I finished it, I couldn’t think about anything else for weeks. Nor could I rid myself of the pain in my heart.

To be completely honest, this is the kind of series to marathon. The pacing will keep you wanting more, to know more. And you should let it take you on this journey.

Idk. This series is really good and you guys should watch it. I’m done my rant.

If you’re interested you can find the whole series available to watch on crunchyroll here for free. It’s only 25 episodes and it’s completely worth your time.

Thanks for reading this post.

KADO: The Right Answer

Okay y’all, I’ve got a new anime recommendation that I can’t stress seriously enough. It comes with mild yet flashy alien invasion, action-packed international negotiations, sci-fi energy sources, a super exhausted flight attendant crew in a hostage situation, and your friendly neighborhood media frenzy! Do you like Steins;Gate? Do you like the weird, inexplicable dating sim vibes? Have you ever wanted to watch the Japanese government shed tears of blood for days on end in a boardroom environment? Can I interest you in an adorable theoretical physicist equipped with an etch-a-sketch

May I now introduce you to:

1. Your new beautiful alien overlord, now with 100% less emoting and an unwavering dedication to linguistic accuracy, who may or may not also be future-Jesus:

With zero joking, I need to inform you that that his name is Yaha-kui zaShunina. Folks, you don’t get higher quality alien visitors than this.

2. A protagonist that a) doesn’t suck and a) possesses the holy trinity of dry wit, a moral compass, and superior communication skills:

3. KADO the cube*, who, if this was a dating sim, would definitely be the love interest you wanted to date the most:

(*that’s it, it’s just a cube. It’s 2km to each side, it doesn’t get any sexier)

(**those specks in the second pic are batshit crazy media helicopters, see #9 below)

4. The swooning Junior Colleague, if alien overlords aren’t your thing:

5. A flight crew that just doesn’t quit, despite being told they have to work overtime in a multi-dimensional hostage situation for the next 29 fucking days

6. The afore-mentioned etch-a-sketch physicist, who routinely frightens the military officers so bad they call for backup to disagree with her

6. This cutie negotiator, who I’m pretty sure is actually super fucking ambitious beneath that wide-eyed veneer

7. This other cutie that does shit with military-grade weapons, who I hardcore ship with the crazy physicist

8. High-powered negotiations, which was a genre I never knew I needed until now and includes intense debates about the problems of inaccurate language localizations and translation fuck-ups in high-stress situations

9. And finally, the military and the media circus, now with proper representation and cool behind-the-scenes depictions of what security procedures really look like during crisis situations

SO GIVE KADO: The Right Answer A TRY, Y’ALL, IT LOOKS KICKASS AND I WANT MORE OF IT ON YOUR DASH AND MINE

One last note: KADO uses a consistent amount of CGI. If you have been traumatized by CGI in the past (see: the dark side of new sailor moon) I urge you to watch the first 2-3 episodes of KADO before writing it off. Why? Because:

 1) the plot and story are so cool I kept watching even after being thrown off initially, and

2) it was actually shockingly easy to get used to the difference in animation

This was because there’s a hell of a lot of geometric detailing in this anime, and the CGI, believe it or not, does a great job in animating it. Facial expressions and body language are also way more detailed because they’re able to alter pre-existing models. This also means the animation is consistently high-quality.

So try it out! The first three episodes (plus prequel, which I highly recommend) are on Crunchyroll with minimal ads. Don’t skip it, ‘cause it looks like it’s gonna continue to be insanely good!

Rec Post: Natsume Yuujinchou

Okay guys i just…i love Natsume Yuujinchou/Natsume’s Book of Friends so much. SO MUCH. It has touched my heart SO DEEPLY and is now one of my top five anime, so i am making one of those overly long overenthusiastic rec posts with tons of gifs in an attempt to impart on you all why it is a thing you should watch.

Basic premise: A teenage boy, Natsume Takashi,  has the rare ability to see otherworldly beings (youkai), who range from violent and dangerous to relatively friendly, but are often very startling when they show up regardless. Natsume was orphaned at a young age and passed around among his relatives, who all considered him a liar and troublemaker because he claimed to see all these things they couldn’t. He often faced abuse and neglect from his guardians and bullying and alienation from his peers.

Natsume has at long last found a kind foster family to live with, but he’s having a very hard time adjusting to the idea that people care about him now and he struggles a lot with the trauma and scars his past has left him with.

What’s more, he’s in inherited a strange book from his deceased grandmother, Natsume Reiko, who he discovers could also see youkai. She would often get in fights with youkai and win due to her strong spiritual power and cunning nature. After she won, she’d make the youkai sign their names in what she called her “book of friends” and bind them to her in servitude. Now Natsume has the power to control these youkai, which makes a lot of youkai want to kill him and steal the book from him.

Natsume decides he will give the youkai back their names and release them from their servitude. In the process, he learns a lot about his grandmother, himself and the youkai world in general.

His companion during these adventures is Madara, a poweful youkai who was sealed in a maneki-neko, or “lucky cat”, statue. Because of this, he takes the form of a very rotund cat most of the time, though his true and most powerful form is kinda wolf-like.

However, he acts like a cat more than anything else, despite his protests to contrary. He can be seen eating a lot, lazing around, chasing grasshoppers and sunbathing. Natsume has therefore dubbed him “Nyanko-sensei”. Nyanko-sensei knew Natsume’s grandmother. He has a deal with Natsume that he’ll act as his bodyguard against violent youkai in exchange for getting whatever’s left of the book of friends when Natsume dies. He lives with Natsume as the family cat and the relationship between the two grows and deepens as the show goes on.

Natsume Yuujinchou is a beautiful anime about healing from trauma, growing as a person and connecting with those around you. I’ve heard it described as “like a warm hug” and I can’t think of anything more accurate. I often feel like it helps me heal from my own wounds. The main character is a total sweetheart, most of the characters are lovely and the beauty of the world the show takes place in is astounding. There’s tension and conflict a plenty, as well as complexity, but the show is really mostly about growth and love. There’s absolutely no gross fanservice or tropey, shady bullshit to be found here. This anime is heartfelt, gentle and emotional in the best way. It starts a little slow and does keep up a very relaxed pace throughout, but I’m telling you, I have cried plenty and been moved deeply by it many times.

The whole thing is available on Crunchyroll.

Now under the cut, some awesome gifs and pics demonstrating all the cool things you can expect from Natsume Yuujinchou:

any food anime recommendations that's dedicated to food like shokugeki and wakakozake?

Sure! There are a bunch, but some good ones are:

Yakitate! Japan (about bread baking)

Antique Bakery (exactly like it sounds)

Chūka Ichiban! (if you’re looking for something more classic)

Yumeiro Patissiere (very very shoujo, and all the better for it)

Bonjour Koiaji Patisserie (if you want something short and sweet)

These are all great anime to watch. Hope you enjoy! 🍙

Anime Recommendations:

So, I saw some people looking for some anime recs, and since I’ve been asked a lot in the past what I’d recommend to people, I thought I’d just make a starter master list here.  It’s obvious by now that I watch way too much anime, and read way too many fanfics if you’ve been on my blog before, so this might be helpful to people.  I’ve also divided it by genres and I’ve tried to add and least three to five recs per genre with one being a lot less common if that makes sense.  I’ve tried to make sure they are only mentioned once through this list, so even if they fit in more genres, I’ve tried to make sure they are in the one I think they best fit.  Anyway, here we go.

Shounen:

What better to start the list off than this right?

  • Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (64 Episodes).
  • Boku no Hero Academia (38 Episodes)
  • Assassination Classroom (47 Episodes)
  • Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure  (Unknown)
  • Great Teacher Onizuka (43 Episodes)

Action:

Packed with tons of fights, badass speeches, and just epicness.  What more do you need?

  • Cowboy Bebop (26 Episodes)
  • One Punch Man (12 Episodes)
  • Shingeki no Kyojin (37 Episodes)
  • Mob Pyscho 100 (12 Episodes)
  • Black Lagoon (12 Episodes)

Adventure:

Mysterous land, fun journeys and all that stuff.  Pretty self explanatory.

  • Mushishi (37 Episodes)
  • Samurai Champloo (26 Episodes)
  • Magi (50 Episodes)
  • Inuyasha (193 Episodes)
