Roy: I’m so pumped about this trip. It’s gonna be epic. Right, boys?
Angus and Jared make muted noises of assent, faces dully glowing in the light from their iPads. Joël has avoided having a proper conversation with Roy ever since he stumbled through the door of The Grind last Sunday night, paranoid that he’s going to start haranguing him about Naomi again. But they’ve been on the road for an hour and Roy hasn’t mentioned her, not that he’d probably say anything in front of Angus, no matter how well- coded. He might be going to wait until he boys are asleep. Joël sighs. Then he winces as Roy starts to hum loudly and tunelessly.
Joël: Have you got any music?
Roy: I dunno, dude. It’s Sonia’s car. See if you can find something decent in the glovebox hidden under all the Tegan and Sara and Indigo Girls.
Ninety seconds later they’re both singing at the top of their voices, Brutus howling in unison.
I’m right on target My aim is straight So you’re in love I say what of it…
Jared and Angus sink as low into their seats as they can in shared embarrassment. Roy is thumping the door of the car through his open window with his hand as he bellows the chorus.
