A Bren Carrier of the 1st Essex moves through Palmyra, in Syria during the Allied invasion of the Vichy possession in the wake of the Anglo-Iraq War. The Allies attacked both from the south from Palestine moving through Lebanon, and from the east from Iraq, the latter force principally composed of the forces previously sent there to put down the uprising there. After about a month of fighting, the region was turned over to the control of the Free French Forces.

While escorting the 21st Indian Infantry Brigade up the Tigris, the HMS Cockchafer* ran aground in shallow water. It had to be dislodged with a river steamer, seen here, before it could continue up the river.

*It is a kind of insect, but makes the name no less hilarious to me…
