Android Kitkat OS to improve performance of cheaper phones and support wearables, says former WSJ reporter

From The Verge:

Android 4.4 KitKat isn’t just an advertising coup. According to former Wall Street Journalreporter Amir Efrati, it will also be Google’s latest attempt to make cheaper Android devices attainable, and prep the mobile OS for wearable computing.

According to Efrati, who says he’s had covert access to the Android 4.4 feature list, the key improvement will be better memory management to allow “entry-level devices” to run with just 512MB of RAM.

Nexus updated/restarted

I’d had enough of the the Nexus being shitslow on Android 5. So I did a factory reset on it - the first in all the three years I’ve owned it.

Seems to have done the trick. Working okay now, but I’ll see how long that lasts.

Downgrading Nexus7 (2012) to Android 4.1.0

As you may know, I am an owner of first generation Nexus 7. It is a great tablet. However, it has become slow over time with all the updates to the Android platform. Lollipop 5.0.2, to which the tablet was recently upgraded, did not perform all that well. The tablet’s speed was ok with animations turned off, but the tablet’s battery drained fast, lasting about 5 hours.

Yesterday the device went…

Get a tablet for school

For the longest time I’ve been using notebooks to do all my computing on the go andfor school. This seems a bit outdated to day. Ever since the introduction ofthe tablet, every company has been trying to make a “laptop killer”. Apple wasthe first to kind of succeed in this, but the ipad was in my opinion not really a laptop killer. The ipad is a device you use on the couch to browse a bit and play some candy crush.

Although we have an ipad at home, I decided a few years ago to buy an android tablet myself. Until a few weeks ago, I might have advised you not buy a tablet instead of a laptop.

I changed my opinion.

You should have a laptop for college or university, but also have a tablet on the side with a bluetooth keyboard. There are reasons for this.

First of all, Microsoft released office for Android and iOS. You get just about the same experience you have on the laptop for free. I’m actually typing this right now on my tablet. Typing on a touchscreen is not recommended, though. For this to work, you might want to get a Bluetooth keyboard.

Sometimes you do, however, need a laptop to run special software which is only available on Windows / Mac. For this reason I’d still recommend to have a notebook on the side.

What kind of tablet do you need? Just about any would work. I choose the Nexus 7. An iPad or windows tablet will probably also work (Surface pro by Microsoft will work very well).

What kind of keyboard do you need? The Microsoft Wedge mobile keyboard. Yes, that is very specific. Why, you may ask. This keyboard comes with a stand which also acts as casing for the keyboard. It’s not perfect, though. It should be a tiny bit bigger and it’s expensive (most expensive keyboard I ever bought). Still, It’s better than pretty much everything else I was able to find (except for the surface pro keyboard). It works on pretty much everything that has Bluetooth. On android even all the windows shortcuts work (crtl-a, crtl-c, crtl-v).

I have yet to come across a big problem with this combination. I’ve even found a big advantage over normal laptops. A portrait screen is for a lot of use cases a lot more practical. Word in particular really benefits with a portrait view.

Conclusion:

Start thinking about using your tablet in a more productive way! Your back will appreciate it.
