The Top 10 Films of 2016

Another year has passed, and since I remember people being interested last time, I have put together a fresh list running down my top 10 films of 2016. Enjoy, and look out for my top 10 most anticipated films of 2017 list @starwarsnonsense (which is my Star Wars blog)!

Honourable mentions: Rogue One, Kubo and the Two Strings, When Marnie Was There and Love and Friendship.

1. Paterson

One line review: An exquisitely understated and sweet portrait of the poetry of the mundane, elevated to the level of transcendence by a marvellously genuine and appealing performance from Adam Driver.

2. Nocturnal Animals

One line review: Not style over substance as some have claimed (though every frame is gorgeous), Nocturnal Animals is a deeply unsettling portrait of a seemingly immaculate life fractured by festering regrets.

3. Moana

One line review: My favourite of all the CG Disney animated movies, Moana is a wonderfully refreshing adventure that has relationships between women at its core.

4. Arrival

One line review: A beautiful piece of cinematic sci-fi that is ultimately a celebration of linguistics and love - this underlines that 2016 is truly the year of Amy Adams.

5. Your Name

One line review: A Ghibli-shaped hole in my heart was filled by this movie, which features wondrously detailed animation and some of the most ingenious and rewarding plotting I’ve ever seen.

6. Midnight Special

One line review: I bought a ticket for Adam Driver but loved Midnight Special for Michael Shannon, who delivers a powerhouse performance as a father willing to go to any lengths to protect his terrifyingly powerful child.

7. Zootopia

One line review: A perky and remarkably imaginative animated movie with a central message that promotes tolerance and compassion without resorting to preachiness.

8. Tale of Tales

One line review: The year’s best looking movie (sorry, Nocturnal Animals!) and one of the best and most authentic presentations of fairy tales I’ve ever seen on the big screen.

9. The Witch

One line review: The year’s most unusual horror movie relies on historical authenticity and the gradual build of a creepy atmosphere as opposed to cheap thrills, and is a remarkable evocation of the paranoia and superstition of the earliest European settlers of America.

10. The Girl With All The Gifts

One line review: This movie basically means Hollywood shouldn’t bother with a film of The Last of Us, since there’s nothing left to accomplish - the killer premise of child zombies is exploited to the fullest extent here, and the weird, faintly surreal ending truly lingers.

Star Wars or Star Trek?

If you follow my blog, you can see that I am obviously a fan of both. I do not believe one needs to be proven superior to the other and enjoy them both on their own merits.

On Allyship and Problematic Books

This whole entire issue, the issue of problematic books boils down to one thing: respect of others. Being respectful of others is not a debate.

Jen has been a massive help to the bookish community. She has generously shared her time and energy with us, helping us be better allies. This includes gentle call outs on problematic books.

Nowhere in any of her posts on here or on her blog has Jen ever said that we can’t enjoy problematic books. She’s even admitted that she’s read and loved some problematic books. We all have a problematic fave or two-that doesn’t make us bad people. BUT we must stop and think. Posting pictures of the book is free promotion for that book. It tells publishers it’s ok to continue publishing problematic and harmful books. It gives our followers the idea that it is a safe book to read.

It’s your blog, but you still owe it to your followers and the people you stand with to acknowledge the issues with those books.

Too many people don’t tag their book photos or add a comment on how the book is problematic. If you can’t do that, it’s better to not post the picture at all. If you can commit to that, if you really can do that, then do it! It helps. But it’s not as powerful of a message to the publishers. It also sends a mixed message. Do you support the book or don’t you?

We are not being forced to do this. If doing any of this makes you uncomfortable, that’s on you.

When I first told Jen that I loved Nevernight she said“Yikes! That book is incredibly racist, here’s a link about it.”

That’s
a call out. I didn’t feel bad when I read her comment. I didn’t feel attacked, because I wasn’t. Nowhere did she say that I was a bad person or needed to stop enjoying the book. She simply asked me to investigate.

That is the difference between a call out and bullying/harassment.

After investigating I don’t promote the book. I took down my 4.5 star review on my blog and Goodreads because I personally did not feel comfortable supporting such a racist and problematic book that has hurt real people. That’s what problematic books do. I no longer recommend it to others. But no one forced me to do that.

If we truly want this book community to be a community we must stand up for each other, speak out against problematic books and let each other know which books are harmful. Communities look out for each other, and this is the best way to do it.

Jen puts a lot of thought and time and effort into her posts. I like to think of them as guidebooks, a good starting place. We all have a lot to learn about ally-ship and as we become more aware of things, we must adapt and continue supporting each other by listening and respecting one another.

Because ultimately? There’s nothing debatable about treating others with respect and kindness.

You either do or you don’t.

She attempted to be casual, said I worked within my limitations, commented something mildly ambiguous about me never writing her a poem. That I do it for strangers, for people I just met, but not for her.

She’s silly. A heart that reflects stars. Petals. Sparks. She reads my blog. She doesn’t even know, all the complicated poems, so much of life’s beauty, angst, passion, glaring ambivalence is because of her. Her looks. Her longings. Her brutal disappointments.

Author’s Note:  It took me forever to find an applicable gif for this post -.- Couldn’t find that I actually wanted. Oh well. Anyway, here’s part 3! It’s been a long time coming, but thank you for your patience; I’ve been a little distracted by writing my Scotty series The Part That Counts over on my Star Trek blog. Please enjoy, let me know what you think!

Groaning, you opened your eyes to the darkness. You held your breath and listened. One other set of lungs breathed next to you. Every two or three breaths a soft whine rode on the air.

“Benji?” You rasped into the room. As you blinked, shapes came together in the dimness. You sat in a tiny room with a grab bar around the perimeter. A pair of handcuffs looped through the bar, holding you in place.

“Are you awake now?” he wheezed.

“Yeah, I’m up, what’s going on? How’s your ankle? Are you okay?” You shook your head and took a pair of deep breaths to pull yourself into the moment.

“Been better,” Benji responded. “Ankle’s murder. I thought I heard Ethan’s voice outside a little while ago, but he sounded calm so I was probably hearing things - ah…” he groaned. “My shoe’s feeling really tight…”

“We need to get it off,” you grumbled, contorting your body to get your hands on your scalp.

Your blog honestly makes me so happy. You do some switch-a-roo on the angsty chapters to make them comical and happy. Plus your art style and drawings are super cute and I love it entirely. Your jokes are the best and I just want to say you are amazing senpai ฅ'ω'ฅ

Me: Was the last chapter angsty?

Editor: Someone died

Me: Oh yeah, and I drew them having a tea party. I’m surprised no one gave me shit for that.

Anyways my sweet star child: I’m glad my blog makes you happy. Here’s a funny story, one of my friends read this blog but doesn’t read Fairy Tail so everything they know about Fairy Tail is thru my terrible jokes. Someone out there probably thinks Juvia is the main character based off how much I talk about her.

This slut Christy Mack the porn star, she saw my blog and she got hypnotized by my blog and I was able to control her and I was able to play with her tits and then eat her pussy and then fuck her so hard she can’t stand up then we went out to dinner one night and she dressed up like a slut and it made my cock rock hard and then I fucked her again after dinner

Hey guys, Krasava here just checking in! Today was the last post of season 3, which means tomorrow we get to start season 4! If that’s not enough reason to celebrate, we recently passed 11,000 followers!! Woohoo! *breaks out the champagne*

I just want to thank all of you again for following me and sticking by me through my hiatus while I worked on my Star Wars blog, @streetsolo, which you should all totally check out and follow, because if you love a badass female hero kicking ass with a stick and taking out bad guys, Star Wars and Buffy have that in common.

And that’s about all I can think of for this update. Any questions, comments, or if you just want to remind us all how awesome season 3 was (it was pretty awesome, wasn’t it?) my ask box is open. Cheers!!
