The Death of Saint Valentine at Milvian Bridge

The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her.

He reportedly died on February 14th (year uncertain) on the Via Flaminia near the Milvian Bridge (aka Ponte Milvio) which spans the Tiber River in northern Rome. According to the official biography of the Diocese of Terni, the year of his death is 273 AD.

The feast of St. Valentine of February 14th was first established in 496 AD by Pope Gelasius I, who included Valentine among all those “whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose acts are known only to God”. As Gelasius implies, nothing was yet known to him about Valentine’s life.

On another note, there was an important battle fought at the bridge in 312 by the Emperor Constantine I (Constantine the Great) and Maxentius. You can read about it here.

BREAKING: US Supreme Court Justice Scalia Found Dead, Natural Causes

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia’s death.

“I was told it was this morning,” Biery said of Scalia’s death. “It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it’s pretty vague right now as to how,” he said. “My reaction is it’s very unfortunate. It’s unfortunate with any death, and politically in the presidential cycle we’re in, my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected.”

The U.S. Marshal Service, the Presidio County sheriff and the FBI were involved in the investigation.
Officials with the law enforcement agencies declined to comment.

A federal official who asked not to be named said there was no evidence of foul play and it appeared that Scalia died of natural causes.

A gray Cadillac hearse pulled into the ranch last Saturday afternoon. The hearse came from Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.

Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan.

What is your opinion on the EU planning to pretty much leave Greece to the migrants by helping to reinforce the borders on neighbouring countries and then remove Greece from the Schengen, do you think Greece will turn into a big migrant camp?

I’m glad Schengen is slowly dying, but the whole Greece drama is nothing more than Merkel trying to shift the blame.

She alone is responsible for the million man march into Europe and she was among those who attacked Hungary for securing its border just a few months back, but now that most of the continent has had enough of it, she blames it on the country that can’t fight back. I guarantee you that had Greece done the right thing and closed its borders in October, Merkel’s government would have threatened sanctions or worse.

And even now, the dilemma is that they don’t actually want them to secure the border. Securing it would mean no more illegal immigrants, sending back everyone who arrives by boat and making it clear that no one will get in anymore. That is the only way to stop the influx. What Merkel and the EU want is to “control” the flow of illegal migrants. Not by stopping them, but by letting them in in controlled locations, which will have precisely zero deterring effect.

Greece is a victim here and they are already getting damaged, the only way they could prevent even worse damage would be if they sealed their borders and exposed Merkel for the nation-wrecker she is, if she then spoke out against it.

MIGAWKI. PROJECT: KILLING TIME BEFORE TIME KILLS ME by Barbara Kubska

At the beginning of 1945 a twenty years old Zygmunt was captured by the Security Office. He was charged and imprisoned for owning an illegal radio station.

At the time when the World War II was coming to an end, many people were kept imprisoned. They were men and women from all over the Europe.
At nights they were brutally interrogated, but during daytime they were trying to stand for each other. They were chanting songs and telling stories.

There was one professional barber among those prisoners. He kept hiding from the guards in order to make a razor out of a spoon. He wanted to create a tool, with which he used to work and he finally succeeded. Then the barber shaved his own beard and also shaved beards of all of his fellow prisoners.  Although it was a purely symbolic act, it served as a great relief to each one of them.

This is a story told by someone who heard it, not experienced it, but it made me think of how hard it was to preserve dignity in such inhumane conditions like those that people who were kept imprisoned during WWII had.

The razor became a symbol of a man with a passion. Thanks to it some semblance of normality was created. Who knows, whether the fact that it made those men feel “normal”, even if just for a while, wasn’t a life-saving blessing.
To me it appears as a magical artifact, a talisman that guarantees a survival in dramatic situations.

The exhibition’s form is a bilateral narration. On one side there is the subject itself  - a spoon/razor, which might have cost its maker his life. On the other side there is a web of my thoughts, impressions and obsessions about the whole story. These obsessions made me find analogies in seemingly different aspects of life.

Migawki is a project organized by the Association of Creative Initiatives “ę”, in which tutors work with young photographers using the “from an idea to the realization” method. In the Association, we value the Do It Yourself concept that involves taking by the artists the responsibility not only for the visual content, but also for designing and producing their exhibitions and publications. Authors have been developing their ideas for many months under the supervision of tutors from the Association “ę” and masters: curators and visual artists. They took part in several art-coaching sessions and in dozens of workshops. In effect, artistically mature projects of an often-universal meaning were created.

Movie Review:

Kung Fu Pánda 3 falls in the kids-just end of the family film spectrum. Unlike the very best animated movies, Kung Fu Panda 3 is normally articles to appeal mainly to younger audiences, offering little of chemical for the parénts who accompany thém to theaters. It’ll discover its strongest favor among those who enjoyed the previous adventures of Pó the Panda (voice of Jack Black). The film exists bécause Kung Fu Panda ánd Kung Fu Pánda 2 were box office goldmines, not because this third film has a fresh or innovative story to tell.  However, like most sequels, it pacifies its core demographic by offering “more of the same.” To that extent, it can be said to be successful…Read more review

Most articles and statistics don’t even bother to count Native peoples when discussing poverty.  I’ve seen way too many things that said “all races” and then went on only to discuss white, Black, Latino, and Asian (it’s very rare to see statistics in the US break up the Latino population, which includes white people, Black people, Asian people, Indigenous peoples, mestizos, etc.).

So I’m again posting a few brief links on Native American/American Indian poverty in the US (with the note that Canada sure as shit doesn’t typically do any better with treatment of Indigenous peoples):

Native Americans have a higher poverty and unemployment rate when compared with the national average, but the rates are comparable to those of blacks and Hispanics. About one-in-four American Indians and Alaska Natives were living in poverty in 2012. Among those who identify as American Indian or Alaska Native as their only race, the poverty rate was 29.1% in 2012.

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/06/13/1-in-4-native-americans-and-alaska-natives-are-living-in-poverty/

Finally the U.S. is beginning to see steady improvement in employment and economic activity years after the worst crisis since the Great Depression. But one group is still plagued with endemic unemployment and widespread poverty.

Native Americans continue to grapple with unemployment levels nearly double that of the overall population, have higher poverty rates and lag behind in education attainment. Making up about 1 percent of the labor force, the native population of 5.2 million is relatively small but diverse. About 49 percent identify as American Indian and Alaska Native only, and 51 percent are combined with one or more other races, according census data. In all, they comprised 2 percent of the population in 2013.

Although many groups have progressed economically in recent years, the native population, oft-overlooked, has a long way to go.

There is WAY too much stuff going on on Twitter, so I summed it all up in one post. Well not all of it but the most important part.

Essentially, Disney is  in SUPER emergency mode. The Scandal official account TWEETED the link to the ABC advisory panel telling fans to you know, “oh state your opinion!” That is a panel that I have been a member of for something like a decade in the past. I left it when I wasn’t watching any more shows on ABC right before Scandal started. So, since I am PERFECTLY aware how it works and I was on there for a very long time… I am LMAO. That panel does NOT accept members, EVER, except for once a year when they allow the existing members to invite other people. That’s not even every season AND they choose the people who can be members among those recommended by existing users. But TODAY it is open and people can just click and become members??

THE DESPERATION IS OFF THE CHARTS!

THen there’s also the matter of The Wrap. You can see the headline they tweeted this morning when the ratings were released, you know the SINCERE, NOT SUGGESTED BY DISNEY HEADLINE, and then the headline from about an hour ago, CLEARLY suggested by Disney (or I should say planted) that DESPERATELY tries to spin stuff that can’t be spun.

1) NO THE DEBATE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS PLUS IT CANNOT BE COUNTED BC IT WAS ON CNN. THAT IS CABLE. DIFFERENT RATINGS.

2) OH DISNEY WANTS TO WAIT FOR L+3 RATINGS? LMAO that’s CUTE. DISNEY ALWAYS counted the overnight ratings, as everyone else does because THEY are those that matter… but hey TODAY it all changes. LMAO!

Except L+3 ratings include DVR where people entirely skip ads, and NO ADVERTISER CARES ABOUT THAT.

Bernie Sanders Wins Every Demographic Group
The results are in: Donald Trump claims the New Hampshire primary; Bernie Sanders tops Hillary Clinton.
By David R. Jones

Senator Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton among nearly every demographic group in the Democratic New Hampshire primary, according to exit polls.

He carried majorities of both men and women. He won among those with and without college degrees. He won among gun owners and non-gun owners. He beat Mrs. Clinton among previous primary voters and those participating for the first time. And he ran ahead among both moderates and liberals.

Even so, there were a few silver linings for Mrs. Clinton. While Mr. Sanders bested her among all age groups younger than 45, the two candidates polled evenly among voters aged 45 to 64. And Mrs. Clinton won the support of voters 65 and older. And, though Mrs. Clinton lost nearly every income group, she did carry voters in families earning over $200,000 per year.

If people are looking to blame someone for spreading/raising awareness about the sex tape, how about looking to the media who did articles on it in NOVEMBER:

Fan2.fr - which is ranked 50,000ish globally on Alexa and 1700ish in France (i.e., super popular site)

Mstarz   27,000ish in the US and 64,000ish gloabally http://www.mstarz.com/articles/91606/20151109/louis-tomlinson-sex-tape-leak-baby-mama-oh-no-briana-jungwirth-one-direction-xxx-video-hoax.htm

among others….

those two sites have a WAY larger audience than even the most popular larry blog that people are falsely making claims about.

and even more ironically - the tape first seemed to appear on twitter and subsequently was tweeted about with the hashtag #ohnobriana (not tumblr because no one wanted that shit on their dash)

With this picture I would like to wish a happy Birthday to all those among my Tumblr friends, whose birthday I don’t know. Many happy returns!

Credibility Gap On The Gender Pay Gap
by Elaine Lutz

The White House announced new requirements last Friday that would require businesses to submit detailed pay data to a federal database to screen for pay disparity. Event participants rolled out the same tired lines about the gender wage gap that have been heard countless times before. Looking at pay statistics more closely, however, it’s clear that there is a big credibility gap among those railing against the gender pay gap.

The pay gap argument is based on U.S. Census data that claims to show that women earn 79 cents for every dollar a man earns. There’s a problem with that statistic, though: It doesn’t compare men and women who perform the same work. It just compares the median wages of all men and all women.

In America we all believe in equality, and we all support the concept of “equal pay for equal work.” But saying women earn 79 cents to every man’s dollar doesn’t compare equal work, equal skills, equal education, or equal experience. When all things are considered, the so-called pay gap virtually disappears.

By ignoring this basic fact, activist groups and politicians would have you believe that some kind of rampant workplace sexism is to blame for the fictitious wage gap — but that’s not the case. The pay gap is due to the choices we make.

More men, for example, choose to pursue careers in science and engineering, while more women choose to be social workers or teachers. Women also value flexible hours and tend to take more time out of the workforce while on average men more time in the office.

In other words, women who have children tend to be more open to work that allows them to spend time with their families, while men with children lean towards earning more money to support their families – even if it means working more hours to do so.

Pay gap activists are using this misleading statistic to push bad public policy that will negatively impact job creation and the economy. Proponents claim the proposed pay law would lend transparency to compensation decisions, but in reality, it will do more to enrich trial lawyers than increase fairness in the workplace. It will allow employees to sue for unlimited amounts of compensatory and punitive damages while shifting the burden of proof to employers, who would need to justify every pay disparity among their employees.

More regulations are the problem, not the solution to women’s success in the workplace. The true sources of their economic empowerment is a result of the opportunity economy. The free market already penalizes discrimination through the profit and loss system. If you don’t hire based on merit, you will be penalized. Yet it is endangered by overregulation.

In a recent poll of 400 small business owners commissioned by the Job Creators Network, three in five respondents said overregulation threatens the viability of their businesses. As a result, four out of five business owners said they won’t be hiring new employees over the next year.

In an attempt to determine the real issues facing women in the workplace, JCN is hosting a town hall in New Hampshire on Friday. It features local businesswomen and is moderated by CNN political commentator Margaret Hoover. Instead of telling women employees what is best for them, we’re actually going to ask them what they want in the workplace. We suspect participants will pinpoint exactly what the White House did last Friday: regulations – just fewer of them, not more.
