She Never Stopped Smiling

by reddit user Pippinacious

Fly was an odd kid, even by odd kid standards. I met her in sixth grade, when our alphabetically ordered last names landed us in adjacent seats, and she turned to look at me with a cheerful, gap toothed smile.

“Hi!” She said.

“Hi.” I replied quietly.

I was shy and intimidated by my first day in middle school, but she wasn’t the least bit nervous.

Long Live Octopus Pie

Three cheers!

I check the webpage out of habit, but Meredith Gran’s comic work Octopus Pie is over.  I feel like this is how sports fans feel when a jersey is retired and lifted to the rafters, forever in its untouchable place, time divided between when it was active and whatever comes after.

That might sound grandiose, but in my mind, nothing tops the ten year run of Octopus Pie.  And in the lifespan of what we call Webcomics, 2007-2017 is a granddaddy of a run, worthy of names like “pioneering,” “influential” and “groundbreaking” because in the space of those years, in this new medium, there was room to be those things without any hyperbole.  The comics landscape of the past decade needed filling out and Meredith carved her space out with precision, showing a polish and drive and a talent from the beginning that set a high standard.

I’m guessing that I started Hark a Vagrant about six months after Octopus Pie began, but Meredith’s was already a name to be reckoned with, due to the solid reputation of her previous comic Skirting Danger and because she was an honest to god trained animator in a sea of stickmen comics or two-dudes-on-a-couch comics (RIP forever *kisses fingers, holds them to the sky*). I was intimidated by her sheer capability.  But inspired too.  I did not need to be intimidated, she was one of the first people I met in comics, and easily one of the best.

Meredith and I briefly shared an apartment and a studio, and I can tell you, she can draw circles around everyone you know.  I later shared a studio with Mike Holmes, who could also draw circles around everyone, and now the two of them are married in some sort of talent supernova.  I am happy for them, even though I feel like I make grade three crayon pictures next to them.  But the other thing that being friends with Meredith for a long time has shown is the cutting wit, the care for stories done right, the love for a medium that will take you through highs and lows that come with comics, and lately through her job as a comics professor, the nurturing of upcoming talent.  I see all of this in Octopus Pie, a comic where character was paramount, where plots were expertly moved, a fine balance was found between the messiness of people and the fun you can have with stories, where subtle emotional movements where rendered with room to breathe, where I felt like I could reach deep into the hearts and minds of the characters on the page because they had been fleshed out so well over the years that they seemed as real people, people that I loved.

I don’t really like that phrase “comics will break your heart,” commonly attributed to Schultz, or Kirby, it doesn’t really matter.  You see it all the time, mostly when people are reckoning with the fact that they work in an unforgiving medium.  I don’t even know what it is about the saying that I don’t like.  Maybe it’s because we all know that comics are hard work, we all know that you might put your life and blood and heart into something and you might get nothing back.  There are no surprises to be found there - it’s not a bad day you had, it’s a life you’re well aware of living, if you do.  But we love the perserverers in comics.  The people who live the phrase are the ones who inspire us the most.

I’m saying all this, and pardon the segue, because I have seen Octopus Pie, some of the finest story work of my generation, passed for recognition time and again and it confuses the hell out of me, truly.  I don’t want to turn a tribute to a work I hold dear into sour grapes, that’s not the intention here, but lord above, if I can’t point this out now, then when can I?  We all know that there are no guarantees in this life (comics will break your heart) but I’ll say this once and then leave it: this is a comic of quality that was miles ahead of so many of its peers, and it deserved better, industry wise.  To wrap up the earlier point, maybe I don’t like CWBYH because it implies that you should shrug your shoulders and not ask for better every time, that a short end of some kind of stick is expected even.  That’s easy when it’s yourself, but speaking as a fan now, I say to heck with shrugging, I want to put Meredith on my shoulders and parade her around and dump her into a Scrooge McDuck thing full of awards.

Actually that sounds pointy and bad and the Ignatz awards are bricks to begin with so maybe forget that analogy but you get the idea.

I hope you read Octopus Pie, I hope you buy the books.  I hope the legacy of it is long and full, because it always will be for me.  And I think readers will agree, because I know this devoted fan base pretty well.  I read the comments, I’ve sat next to Mer at comic shows, I’ve listened to some of the emails that touched her.  I know this is a comic that meant a lot, to a lot of us.  In this world of work we put our hearts and souls into to begin with, that is a wonderfully worthy thing.

I do not know what Meredith will do next, but whatever it is, I am here for it, seat pulled close to the stage.  The retired jersey is in the rafters, the game is still being played by the people who dreamed better because it was there.  Aw what can I say, I’m sentimental!

 Thanks, Meredith. <3

“Argent sent us.” Scott said, “Beacon Hills has trouble and we need your help.”

You were pushed back as a tall red head protectively stood in front of you with his arms crossed. To your horror Archie and his tag alongs had joined the group also causing Stiles to curse as he pointed a skinny finger as you.

“Ms. Y/L/N,” Friday chimed.

With a small groan, you forced your eyes open. It was supposed to be your day off, meaning you could sleep as much as you wanted for as long as you wanted. Why was she calling you now?

“Yes, Friday?” you murmured. She always found a way to bother you, especially during nap time. Delta’s needed more rest than everyone else, but of course, nobody knew that but you. You hadn’t told anyone about your true status yet.

“Mr. Stark requests your presence in the common room.”

With a tired groan, you threw the covers from your body and sat up.

What could possibly be going on this time? Did Tony blow up another suit again? It took weeks to get the oil out of your nails, much less your skin. Did Peter run out of webs mid swing again? You loved the kid almost like a little brother, but the kid needed some kind of rockets in his shoes for safety. You made sure to scold Tony on that; he wasn’t exactly a responsible crime fighter. You understood now what Pepper went through.

You slipped on the nearest form of clothing you could find before making your way towards the common room.

The sounds of hushed whispering rung throughout your ears. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Was Tony having guests over? Why didn’t Friday mention that to you? Looking down at your clothes, you felt a blush break out on your cheeks. You were nowhere near dressed for guests. It wasn’t anything near provocative, just an oversized sweater and leggings, but still. You didn’t like drawing attention to yourself and you strongly disliked strangers.

Entering the room, you spotted the entire Avengers assembly. Literally.

You recognized Thor, who stood taller than everyone else, speaking with Bruce Banner quietly. You spotted Vision and …were that Scarlett Witch? Jesus, she was even prettier in person. You may or may not have read her file religiously.

You saw Hawkeye standing next to the redheaded assassin herself, Black Widow. Immediately, you felt your instincts kick in slightly. She was a suitable alpha, no doubt. Her red hair made her pale skin seem almost vibrant and those eyes…god she was so perfect. With a subtle shake of your head, you pulled your mind out of the gutter. As nice as she was, you were still wary of the woman. She was extremely intimidating.

In the corner of the room, you spotted Falcon and Ant Man standing side by side. You could tell how nervous the two looked about the whole situation. You couldn’t blame them, from what you heard about the whole airport thing that happened in Germany, you’d be a bit nervous, too.

You smiled when you spotted Peter standing by himself, his hands in his tucked into his pockets casually. At least you knew him. Even though Peter was a newly legal Beta, he still remained one of your closest friends. He didn’t know about your whole…status problem yet, but he something told you he knew there was more to you than what you were telling him. But being the polite person he was, he decided not to push it, to your relief.

When Tony entered the room, everyone instantly got quiet. You had a feeling you’d be receiving some really bad news this evening.

“Alright, I’m sure you’re all wondering why I called you here,” he began, clapping his hands together. You could spot the subtle sweat beading across his forehead. Why was he so nervous? “I can assure you right now, I’m not dying!”

Everyone seemed to relax a little bit at the news. Jesus, he had a way of being the biggest drama kind on this earth.

As Tony continued, you felt someone’s eyes on you. Ignoring it, you kept your gaze on Tony.

“Why are we here, Tony?” Rhodey asked, crossing his arms over his chest. A cliché alpha mannerism. You snorted softly at the realization that your instincts hadn’t kicked in at the sight of him. Maybe he wasn’t as alpha as he thought he was. Alphas were so fragile underneath the whole macho exterior.

Again, you could feel someone’s eyes on you. And it was honestly irking the life out of you. You couldn’t possibly focus on Tony while whoever it was stared at you like that. With a causal turn of your head, you caught sight of Natasha glancing over at you. Her blue eyes were set on your body, trailing them up and down. Suddenly, you felt so small.

You felt the arousal slowly growing between your legs, making you blush. Before she could look back into your eyes, you looked away quickly. That wasn’t a very practical idea after all.

“We’re here because I’ve decided that I was a little bit hard on Rogers,” he admitted, avoiding everyone’s gaze. But when he looked up at everyone’s smirks, he sighed.

“Okay, maybe I was a bit dramatic about it.”

Someone let out a snort.

“What I’m trying to say is, I was wrong. Incredibly wrong about the entire situation. Rogers, although he can be a little shit sometimes, is a strong asset to this team. And without him, we’ve pretty much got nothing going for us.”

Everyone nodded in agreement, much to his dismay.

“Hey! I did pretty well those couple of ti- anyways,” he cleared his throat. “I’ve decided to try and make things right; for the sake of the team. I offered Cap a place back on the team.”

Everyone let out small approvals at the news. You even cracked a smile. This was so mature for Tony, you were so proud of him.

“He agreed to come back on one condition.” Everyone practically leaned in with anticipation. Peter even stood on the couch to get a better view.

“He’ll come back, but only if Barnes gets a place, too.”

You felt like one of those cartoon characters. Your jaw practically dropped straight to the floor. Peter instantly looked down at me with wide eyes. But Rhodey, though…he was not having it at all.

“Are you high?!” he shouted, clenching his fists in fury.

“I wish I was,” Tony said under his breath with a sigh. “No Rhodey, I’m just trying to fix things for once.”

“And by fixing, you mean letting the man who killed your parents live under your roof?”

That’s when shit hit the fan.

“Hey, Barnes was brainwashed!” Scott shouted. “He didn’t mean any of that!”

“Oh yeah? Well, why didn’t he just walk away?” Rhodey retorted. “He could’ve at any point. He’s a damn master assassin!”

You glanced over at Peter, feeling a bit fearful. He gave you a reassuring smile, patting your shoulder gently. You absolutely hated confrontation. Especially when it involved your work.

“Tony!” Rhodey exclaimed. “At least think about this for a couple days!”

“Yeah, about that,” Tony said, glancing at his wristwatch. “I kinda already agreed to it. They should be here any minute.”

Your eyes nearly flew out of your head. You weren’t too sure about this. You knew Steve was a trustworthy man, but this Bucky guy…you were a bit wary of this. The only thing you knew about him was that he murdered a lot of innocent people, including Tony’s parents. Tony told you the entire thing personally after he’d nearly drank himself to death one night.

“Mr. Stark,” Friday chimed again. You all instantly went quiet. “Mr. Rogers and Mr. Barnes have arrived.”

“Oh, cool,” he sighed. “Send them in, I guess.”

The elevator chimed mechanically, opening swiftly.

That’s when you felt it.

Your vision instantly blurred, creating kaleidoscope like patterns. You placed a hand on whoever was near you for support. Whoever the person was, they placed their hands on your shoulders, steadying you. The next thing you know, you’re on the ground surrounded by everyone. You feel hands cupping your face, forcing you to look up. Natasha stared back at you, her blue eyes widened with worry.

The heat between your legs was unlike anything else you’ve ever felt. It was almost unbearable. You felt a wave of arousal hit you at full force, preventing you from thinking straight.

Natasha leaned in far too close, inhaling deeply. Her eyes snapped open, her eyes completely dilated.

“Delta.” She whispered, licking her lips hungrily.

“Delta.” Peter repeated, his eyes dilating as well.

“Delta!” Wanda gasped, prowling closer to you with matching dilated eyes.

“Delta.” Sam followed behind her, his nostrils flaring.

You looked over at the elevator, past all the people slowly crowding around you.

Bucky’s eyes were completely dilated, his breaths coming out in short puffs. He was the one. He was the perfect mate and you wanted his knot and you wanted it now. You didn’t care if everyone watched; you needed him more than anything. You didn’t care who was in the way of your alpha.

“WAIT WHAT?” Tony practically squeaked, staring at you with wide eyes. “What do you guys mean delta? She’s not…oh no.” he inhaled, catching your scent of wild berries and pine trees. Of course you were a delta. Jesus, he was so stupid not to notice. You had no scent up until now.

Natasha dipped her nose into your neck, inhaling harshly. You let out a small whine, gently trying to push yourself away from her. It was no use. She was an alpha, far too strong for you.

Bucky let out a growl, snapping everyone’s eyes from you to him. The gears in his metal arm shifted threateningly as he clenched his fist harder. Your eyes instantly went to his, begging silently for him to take you away.

Before anyone was able to touch you, Tony scurried past everyone and snatched you away from Natasha. Well, he tried to.

Natasha grabbed ahold of your legs as tight as she could, planting her feet onto the ground to prevent him from leaving. “God damn it, Romanoff!” he spat. “Get your shit together before I make Fury fire you!”

In a flash, Thor scooped the redheaded woman up from the ground and threw her over his shoulder despite her angry shouts.

“Ah, I remember my first encounter with a delta!” he laughed, snatching a kicking and screaming Wanda up as well with his other arm.

Tony began dragging you away as fast as he could, trying to dodge the crazed people that darted towards you.

Peter had managed to grab onto your arm, only to be snatched up by Clint and thrown into one of the coat closets. “Jesus,” Clint sighed, placing a chair in front of the door. “You guys are so embarrassing.”

You caught a glimpse of Bruce running out of the building, his body shifting inhumanly large. Oh god, he was hulking out. Vision and Sam were practically rolling on the floor as the android gathered the man into a headlock. “Let me go, you fucker!” Sam spat, wiggling in his grasp.

Suddenly, you felt a cold, metal arm grab onto your ankle, tearing you away from Tony’s grasp. You cried out with glee at the sight of Bucky practically dragging you through the hall, ignoring Tony’s shouts from afar. You jumped into his arms, wrapping your legs around his waist as he carried you away. Bucky raced down the hallway, zooming through the halls for any empty rooms. He didn’t care if it was a janitor closet, as long as he could get his knot inside you and fast.

You dipped your head into his neck, pressing small kisses along the warm flesh. He let out a growl, kneading the flesh of your behind. You let out a small squeak at his actions. Bucky smelled like heaven. His scent was a mixture of cinnamon and the ocean, your favorite two things combined into the perfect alpha. You tangled your fingers through his hair, breathing in his scent as if it were oxygen.

“Rogers!” Tony’s voice echoed from down the hall. “Get your friend before he impregnates my successor!”

Suddenly, you and Bucky were on the ground. Steve’s shield rattled against the ground beside the two of you. Bucky let out a string of curses as he stood. Before he could get to you, he was tackled to the ground by Steve. The two men wrestled on the ground, throwing punch after punch.

Not knowing what else to do, you crawled towards the men and pounced onto Steve’s back.

“What the hell? Get off Y/N!” he shouted, stumbling backwards. Before Bucky could get to his feet once again, you were snatched from Steve’s back and hauled away from him.

“What the hell is wrong with you two? You’re like rabid bunnies on Viagra!” Tony exclaimed, dragging you away with all his might.

You cried out as you got farther and farther away from Bucky. Your heat slowly became more and more intense the farther you were apart. You watched helplessly as Steve planted his shield on his friend’s back and sat on it, preventing him from following this time.

You reached out and grabbed onto one of the door handles and tried to pull yourself away from Tony, only to have him swat your hands away. Turning the corner, the last thing you saw was Bucky lying helplessly beneath Steve.

Tony practically threw you into the first bedroom he found.

Unfortunately, you completely missed the bed and landed on the floor with a loud thud. You picked yourself up and cradled your bruised arm, snarling at Tony. The older man let out a sigh of relief, plopping down onto the bed. It was a spare bedroom, but it would do for now. He just needed to rest a bit. He really did need to get back in shape soon. Gosh, Pepper would be cackling at him right now.

“You are such a handful, you know that?” he sighed, watching you intently.

You glared up at him, your eyes still dilated completely black. You were still in heat. Great.

Tony let out a small chuckle, staring out the small window. You let out a small growl.

“You know, I remember these days when I was a kid.” He recalled, watching the birds fly past the building. Your eyes widened. What was he talking about?

“You see,” he said softly. “My mom was a delta, too.”

“Another one to mark down.” A gentle, yet annoyed, sigh escaped your lips as you placed the ink against the marked paper, slashing it down as you disgustingly observed the overly ecstatic couple.

Just moments ago the two didn’t even know the other one existed, but miraculously they said what was plastered on their wrist and now they were full on making out… right in front of the whole room filled with students trying to eat their lunch in peace.

Squirming uncomfortably, you instead focused on something else more interested. The ink developed in your skin.

Focusing on the neat lettering, you lightly brushed your fingers against your smooth skin that captivated the small little phrase that haunted your thoughts ever since you found about it when you were a child.

Those seven words “do you have a thing for superheroes?” burned in your mind throughout your childhood as you desperately tried to find the person you were destined to spend you whole life with; but no such luck.

Let’s just say there were way to many snakes/fakes that wanted to be part of the popular group of kids.

“Still nothing?” Liz’s voice rang through your ears as she stood across from you, a bright smile smeared on her face as she overlooked your displeased expression that was still glaring at that small little catchphrase planted on your skin.

Laughing slightly at your concentration on the words overcoming your life, she sat down across from you and observed your eyes which were scanning the words for the millionth time today.

“You seriously need to stop staring at thing.” Leaning up a tad bit, Liz grabbed a carrot from your tray of food and popped it in her mouth, her smile still plastered on her face.

“But it’s more entertaining than my life.” Glancing up at the overexcited female, you decided to focus your undivided attention on he but that didn’t last long as your eyes placed their rightful position on your ink stained skin.

“See,” she motioned her second carrot at your wrist and your eyes that were currently glued to each other. “You can’t even keep your eyes off it for a second.” Popping the carrot in her mouth, she leaned against the table and observed your now defeated expression dancing over your face.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Your voice was quiet and low as you pulled your sleeve all the way up, grabbing it in your hand before you focused your attention on the intrigued female.

“Yeah, sure.” Sarcasm rolled off her smiling mouth as she grabbed a strawberry from your tray that you paid no attention to.

“How about you?” Placing your elbows on the table, you put your head in your hands and cocked your head to the side, trying to push the conversation away from you as much as possible.

“What about me?” Focused on the strawberry, she took a small bite out of it and then focused her attention on you who had a light smile on your face.

Since your love life wasn’t going to well, might as well talk about her own.

“You know, the whole thing about Flash~.” Lightly singing his name, Liz was caught off guard as she couldn’t help but choke on the strawberry in her mouth, her face a pigmented red in embarrassment as she lightly chocked on the fruit.

Small little glances were pulled to the two of you, but it didn’t last long as they continued on with their boring conversations, but that didn’t matter compared to the glare your best friend was giving you.

Complete frustration developed in her eyes as she continued to cough, her fist lightly pounding her chest as she tried to breath normally once again.

“We-We agreed that we wouldn’t talk about that again.” Regaining her voice, she slowly cleared her throat before she erupted into a series of coughs, her eyes watering from the pressure which caused you to loosely conceal your laughter.

“It’s not funny.” Her voice crocked lightly due to the lack of air, but it was also stern and serious as she overlooked your bright red face trying to overcome the urge of bursting into laughter.

Just the mere sound of Flash’s name caused Liz to cringe internally and externally; even when the two were destined to be together.

Yup, you guessed it. The ‘queen’ of the school paired up with the ‘joker’ of the school – it was like a match made in Heaven.

“Y/N,” a gentle glare was shot towards your direction, but you continued to snicker at her denial towards the confident male. “Please, don’t start this again.” Sincerity filled her voice as she gave you a pleading look, hoping you wouldn’t bring up the horrid memory again.

What memory you may ask? Well, let’s just say it wasn’t entirely pleasant.

Pretty much Flash accidentally did something inappropriate to Liz and Liz, being the person she is, figured it was intentional so she completely ignored him which caused tension between the two.

And here we are now: Liz trying to avoid Peter so she didn’t smile at his awkward, yet hilarious jokes.

“Okay, okay.” Slightly avoiding her pleading expression, you awkwardly died down in your snicker and wiped away the tears that managed to fall from your ear ducts.

You couldn’t help it, her reaction to you talking about Flash Thompson was hilarious and you wouldn’t change it for the world.

“I’m sorry.” Snickering lowly once again, your eyes glanced up at the disappointed female as she turned away from you, her arms crossed over her chest in a pouty manner as she waited for a sincere apology.

“Come on, lighten up a little bit.” Leaning forward, you tried to nudge her in the shoulder but she quickly pulled her shoulder back to avoid the contact between the two of you.

Groaning at her immaturity, you aggravatingly spoke a soft “You’re seriously mad at me?” whilst raising an eyebrow at the disappointed female.

Seeing no reaction from her, you slowly pulled your hand away and sat down in a heap, a rolling of your eyes seen across the table before you crossed your arms across your chest, mimicking Liz’s actions she displayed to you.

“You know I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you.” Your tone softened as you cocked your head to the side, your orbs piercing through her face as you tried to decipher what was going through her mind.

After a minute of just flat out staring and silence, you finally piped up a groan as you leaned your head against the wall of the cafeteria, your E/C clearly full of discomfort from the awkward silence between the two of you.

“Fine, be mad at me.” You shook your head and closed your journal in front of you, standing up before you placed your books in your backpack.

“But just so you know,” you leaned close to her with an intimidating look in your eyes, before you glanced over her confused expression. “I’m not afraid to tell Flash where you are.” A smirk appeared on your lips as you watched her eyes expand at the ‘threat’ given to her.

Before she could strangle you where you stood, you turned around and ran out of the cafeteria with a skip in your step and a victorious smile on your face which caused everyone to look at you confusingly.

Especially two sophomores staring at both you and Liz from across the room.

I had maybe been in my hotel room for 10 minutes, when I got a text from Finn.

(11:23)
Hey Y/N get your lazy ass down to the bar. Everyone is chilling here.

I rolled my eyes at my best friends text and responded.

(11:24)
Thats no way to talk to your friend, but I’ll be down in a second.

I pulled my hair into a messy bun and slipped on my sneakers. I grabbed my room key and headed out the door. I was turning a corner towards the elevator when I ran smack into someone. “What the hell?” I looked up to see Seth smiling down at me.

“Hey sweetheart. Maybe watch where you are going.” Seth moved past me as my mouth hung open.

You Didn’t Tell Them

A/N: So I wrote this on Monday and it has taken me this long to post it because I didn’t know whether I liked it or not. I am still kinda on the fence about it? I have an idea for a part two, but I don’t think I will write it if no one likes this one.

Y/N unlocked the door to her apartment and stepped in. It had been a pretty okay day overall, not very stressful or overly boring, but not exciting either. She put down her stuff and headed into the kitchen. “Jason?” She called out as she walked in. She stopped when she noticed him sitting at their table drinking tea with an older man. “Oh, I didn’t know we had company.”

The older man set his cup on the table and looked quizzically at Jason. “It is fine. I was actually just leaving.”

“Oh, I don’t mean to interrupt.” She said hurriedly. “I’m Y/N.” She reached out a hand to shake his.

“Pleased to make your acquaintance, Miss Y/N. I am Alfred Pennyworth.” He said as he took he hand and gently shook it.

“You’re Alfred? Jason has told me so much about you. It is great to finally meet you.” Y/N said.

“I would love to say the same for you, but I am afraid Master Jason has never mentioned you.” Alfred said quietly. He patted Y/N’s hand and picked up his coat. “It has been a pleasure.” He quietly closed the door behind him.

Y/N turned to Jason, who had suddenly become very busy with cleaning up the plates and cups he and Alfred had used. “You haven’t told them about me?” Y/N asked quietly.

“I was waiting for the right time.” Jason said as he put the dishes in the sink.

“Jason, we have been dating for three years, two of those we have been living together.” Y/N pointed out.

“I know, it just never seemed to be the perfect moment.” Jason avoided her gaze as he loaded the dishwasher.

“Could you just stop for a moment and talk to me?” Y/N said. She waited until he turned to her to continue. “Why haven’t you told your family about me?”

“I was afraid they would intimidate you and you would leave me.” Jason answered quietly.

“You know,” Y/N said, stepping close to him so that she could look him in the eyes. “That would make a lot more sense if you hadn’t already told me you were the Red Hood. If I didn’t run then, what makes you think I would run once I met your adopted dad and siblings?” Jason refused to meet her eyes as she continued to question him.

Y/N sighed and sat at the table. “The only reason I can think of for why you didn’t tell them is that I am not important enough to you to tell them.”

Jason’s head shot up. “Y/N, it isn’t like that, I swear. I-”

“Look. Three weeks after we started dating, I told all my friends about you.” Y/N said as she rubbed her eyes tiredly. “When we moved in together, I told my mother and I sat on the phone with my conservative grandmother as she tried to talk me out of it and told me I was on the pathway to Hell. Do you know why I told them and why I put up with that? It was because you were important enough to me for me to want my family to know I was with you. I wanted them to know I love you and I’m happy with you. And, up until today, I thought you felt the same way.”

“I do feel the same way, I just-” Jason tried to interject.

“I don’t want to hear you speak right now. I honestly don’t even want to be in the same room with you.” Y/N said as the first tear made its way down her face. Jason froze. He wanted so desperately to touch her, to comfort her, but he knew she didn’t want him right now. He slowly got up and walked out the door. He walked up the stairs to the roof and pulled out his phone. He sighed and dialed the person whom he hoped would help him fix this mess.

“Bruce, I fucked up.” Jason said as soon as his father answered the phone.

He heard Bruce excuse himself before closing a door. “Do you want to elaborate on that?”

“I’ve been dating this girl for a while. Well, more than a while. I’ve been dating her for three years.” Jason admitted.

“I assume you have a good reason for not telling us about her.” Bruce said in a light tone.

Jason winced before continuing. “That is actually where the problem comes in. Alfred came over for tea today and Y/N came home before he left. She found out that I haven’t told any of you about her and is pretty upset over it.”

“I’ll bet. You have been dating her for three years and apparently live with her, but you haven’t told your family about her? I’m upset for her.” Bruce said.

“This isn’t funny.” Jason said angrily. “She said that it made her feel like she wasn’t important to me. Which is the furthest thing from the truth. I was gonna propose, Bruce. I have a ring and everything.”

Bruce was silent for several moments. “How do you plan on fixing this?”

Jason raked a hand through his hair. “That’s why I called you.”

Bruce sighed. “I think I have a plan.”

Don’t Look Back (ACOTAR AU) - Part 9

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13, Part 14, Part 15, Part 16, Part 17, Part 18Part 19

There were two reasons why Rhysand was wallowing in his own self-loathing that morning and the first one was the usual longing he felt when Feyre was in his presence yet he could do nothing about it. The second one was the more important reason – he was the one that let this happen. He let Tamlin hurt Feyre because his friends were trying to focus on his drunk self. The self-loathing increased monumentally when he slid into his car, ready to take Feyre home and she said, “Is there a reason why you’re refusing to look at me?”

Rhys whipped his head up from the steering wheel, from where he was putting the key in the ignition. “I’m not-“

“Oh please, you avoided eye contact at every possible occasion. Are you mad at me?”

Rhys’ eyes widened as he realised how his behaviour might have come across to her that morning, he instantly felt ashamed. But what could he tell her, as she sat there in some of Mor’s leggings and Cassian’s old rugby shirt from when he was 13 that his cousin had stolen a year ago. He couldn’t possibly tell her that the real reason why he was making every effort to avoid eye contact was because he felt disgusted at himself for letting Tamlin hurt Feyre and then having exceptionally inappropriate dreams about her.

I’m not mad at you Feyre Archeron, how could I? I’m hopelessly in love with every fibre of your being but you can’t know because you’ve just got out of a shitty relationship and maybe you need space and don’t even want another relationship. I can’t possibly tell you that I avoided eye contact with you this morning because I’m ashamed that I did nothing to prevent anything last night and even if I did look at you, I would melt into a puddle thinking about you touching me and I touching you. Just us. Together.

willow-free  asked:

I don't really have any prompts, but if you look up the Jamilton tag on @midnigtartist's blog, you might get a few ideas! Aimee is complete Jamilton trash, loves the heck outta them

I did just that! The prompt/feeling I got from that is “Jefferson actually likes kids and takes care of Philip for a day when Hamilton loses track of him, causing Hamilton’s entire view of Jefferson as a person to shift”

@midnigtartist Happy birthday! I was already writing this before I learned it was your birthday, but I hope you enjoy it regardless! You’re art is great! Also, I sent you an ask about this but severely underestimated the size of your inbox. If/when you see the anon that sounds suspiciously like this post, feel free to ignore it!

As much as he’d like it to be the case, Thomas did not at first recognize the kid loitering around the office. He did however, recognize that the kid couldn’t be more than 10 years old, if that- and was therefore too young to be standing around anywhere, never mind outside the ‘Washington and Associates’ law firm.

It wasn’t quite time to pack up, but Thomas figured this was more important. Plus, no one else was dealing with it, or even noticing. He saved his work, and stood up.

“Leaving early?” James poked his head up, at Thomas’ movement.

“There’s a kid hanging around outside, it’s distracting,” Thomas explained. James peeked out the window, furrowed his brows, and nodded.

“Don’t take too long,” James reminded, turning back to his work. Thomas rolled his eyes and nodded, even though he knew James’ attention was already back to his work.

The kid jumped when Thomas opened the door, immediately turning around and looking down as if he just happened to be standing there. It wasn’t very convincing.

“Hi,” Thomas pitched his voice, warmer and completely devoid of his usual sarcastic drawl. “You’ve been standing out here for a while, is there anything I can help you with?” Up close, the kid was even smaller. The parents had better be nearby, or Thomas would be having words.

“Uhh,” The kid’s head bobbed up, then straight down, his mass of curls hiding his face. Thomas felt his heart thaw, just a bit- the kid was just shy. Which was fair, given Thomas was a tall, mysterious stranger. Even adults tended to be intimidated. Thomas leaned down, dropping to the kid’s level.

“That’s okay,” Thomas tried to put the kid at ease. “Could you tell me where your parents are, so we can find them?”

“Umm,” The kid started again, but this time he brushed his hair behind an ear and glanced up to Thomas’ chin. “Mom’s at her home, I’m s'posed to be with Dad this week, and he’s s'posed to be here. I think.” He nervously glanced up at the building. “There’s only one Washington law place, right?”

Ah, a divorced kid. “Yes, as far as I’m aware, this is the only Washington law place,” Thomas didn’t want to correct the kid and possibly confuse him. Still, he couldn’t stop an amused smile at the term ‘law place’. “Can you tell me your Dad’s name?”

The kid froze, paling instantly. “U-uh, it’s my Dad, um…” He started shaking. Crap.

Thomas thought quickly. “It’s okay, it’s okay!” He smiled wide, waving his hand in what he hoped was more comforting than dismissive, though he used it in the latter sense far more often. “Could you tell me your name, instead?”

“Oh!”, the kid grinned. “My name’s Philip Hamilton! I’m 8 years old!” Thomas nearly flinched. There was only one Hamilton who worked at Washington’s, and there was no way this was a coincidence. He should have guessed- Hamilton’s divorce was well known in lawyer circles, and now that he was looking for it, the kid’s face bore some resemblance. Standing in front of Thomas was his biggest work rival’s son.

There wasn’t anything for it, though. Thomas was hardly going to just leave the kid out here. “Nice to meet you, Philip. I work with your Dad. My name’s Thomas Jefferson.”

Philip’s eyes lit up in recognition. Thomas had just enough time to worry about what exactly the kid was recognizing. “Jefferson? Dad mentions you all the time! He says you’re really distracting!”

Distracting, huh? Not 'evil’, not 'idiotic’; nor any of the other insults Hamilton would shout to his face? Not even 'bad man’, if he wanted to soften it to his kid? Thomas itched to ply Philip for answers, for what Hamilton really thought; but it was the middle of winter and now was not the time.

“How about we wait inside for your Dad, and you tell me what you’re doing out here?” Thomas spoke cautiously, not sure how Philip would react to being asked to go somewhere with a relative stranger.

Strangely though, Philip’s shyness went straight out the window after his introduction. “Oh! That’s because Dad promised me this time, for real promised, that he’d get off work on time and take me to see a movie! I wanted to make sure he really would, so I looked up 'Washington law’ on google and bussed here all by myself!” Thomas led the way to the building as Philip chattered, small hand immediately latching onto Thomas’ fingers.

“That’s very cool!” Thomas enthused, opening the door and immediately shooting a glare at every person who stared. “Now, your Dad’s out now, the boss sent him to the courthouse to drop something off, but we can wait for him, alright?”

Philip beamed. “Alright! This place looks even cooler than I thought!” He was so enthusiastic, that Thomas couldn’t help but smile back. Hamilton would still be getting an earful, being so unreliable that his 8 year old child felt the need to escape his babysitter and bus through the middle of town to check up on him. Hell, did he even have a babysitter?

Thomas’ work was left, forgotten on his desk. James would clean up for him, this was more important. “What do you say to meeting your Dad’s boss?” He needed to at least explain the situation, after all.

“Mr. Washington? Yeah! Dad says he’s too nosy, and Mom says he’s basically like my second grandpa, even though I’ve never met him before.”

Thomas couldn’t stop the chuckle if he tried. “Did he? You’ll have to tell me more, later.” He joked, but Philip nodded anyways. This was far better than finishing his work.

Alex was determined to keep his promise, for real this time. He was not staying late, and if possible, he would even be home early. Washington owed it to him, for all that free overtime.

Unfortunately, all the owing in the world meant nothing when Washington ordered him to take some important documents to the courthouse, a good half hour away, when the day was nearly over. Alex could never say no to a direct request like that, even if Washington probably would have relented if he explained his circumstances.

No, he could do this and still be out on time, if he drove straight to Philip’s school, instead of back to the firm, first. Alex did so, driving as fast as he reasonably could.

Only, when he did that, Philip had already left, instead of waiting for him. In fact, he had left for the washroom in the last hour of class, and never returned, according to the teacher. Alex barely spared the time to chew them out for not keeping a better headcount, and then he was running off to his car and to home.

Philip wasn’t at home either. Alex started panicking in earnest. He could be anywhere, but why would he? Philip was so excited about going to see the movie, he wouldn’t have just run off today of all days, would he? But he alternative- if Philip hadn’t purposefully run off himself- was far worse. Alex started by doing circles of the neighbourhood, then the local parks.

Alex was focused; so focused that his phone remained in his pocket, battery dead before he’d even realized Philip was missing.

It must have been hours later, the sun starting to set, when Alex finally gave up. He had panicked somewhere early down the line, and never quite stopped. His limbs were shaking. Alex had lost his son.

He didn’t want to even think about the phone call he would have to make to Eliza. But first, he’d check the house again, just in case. Alex wasn’t holding out much hope at this point.

Alex was just stressed enough to miss the strange car behind his in the driveway. He was not, however, too stressed to notice two people sitting in his living room.

“Hamilton, about time!” Jefferson waved his arms enthusiastically, though something sharp glinted in his eyes. Alex’s brain stuttered for a moment at the sight of his coworker/rival relaxing in his home, but then Philip was bounding into his arms.

“Dad! Where the heck where you? Mr. Jefferson’s called you like, a million times!”

“Wha- Philip, where have you been? You weren’t at school, the teachers told me you disappeared, you weren’t at home, I’ve been worried sick, looking for you!” Harsh, panicked words spilled from Alex’s mouth, even as he seized his son in a fierce hug. “Don’t scare me like that!”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to,” Philip hugged back tight, voice suddenly subdued and guilty. “I just wanted to find you at work, so you’d actually go on time.”

Alex loosened his hug so that he could face Philip directly. “Wait, you what-?” Alex cut himself off, remembering the other person in the room. “Jefferson, why the fu-heck are you here?” Philip’s head poked up at Alex’s accusatory tone, brows furrowing in confusion.

“Nice save,” Jefferson smirked, always as irritating as possible. “Also, is that really the way you want to be speaking to the guy who’s been watching your kid all evening? When I could have been doing anything else with my time?”

There was no reason for Jefferson to be lying. In fact, that answer made the most sense, given that Jefferson had literally been in his home, watching Philip, when Alex got in there. Still though, this was Jefferson. Instinctive denial surged in his chest. “Excuse me-”

“I’m sorry!” Philip shouted again, lip trembling. He wasn’t looking at Alex though, instead facing Jefferson. “I didn’t mean to waste your day!”

Alex’s blood ran cold. That was exactly the opening one could never make to Jefferson- he could never hold back his infuriating sarcastic comments. He was going open his mouth and spout some negative bullshit that would make Philip cry, because Jefferson was an asshole who didn’t have any kids and probably hated them.

Jefferson did open his mouth, but his eyes were suddenly wide, with surprise and maybe guilt- something Alex had never seen him wear. He scrambled off the couch. “No no, I didn’t mean that, Philip! You’ve been great fun!” Jefferson assured, stepping over to crouch in front of Philip.

Philip looked up at him cautiously. Alex held his breath, completely taken aback. “Really?”, Philip whispered, and Alex could hear the tiny smile working its way into his voice.

“Of course!” Jefferson reached a hand over to ruffle his hair. “I got to read all your poems, and you got to hear all about the silly things your Dad does at work! It’s just that your Dad’s back now, so I should probable get going.” He gave Philip a wide grin, full of warmth and life.

Alex wasn’t sure he’d ever seen Jefferson with a smile like that. It did something to his stomach that he’d rather not analyze.

“No! You gotta stay for supper! We can’t do the movie anymore anyways, right Dad!” Philip bounced back, both emotionally and literally, on the balls of his feet.

Alex opened his mouth, searching for an excuse that wouldn’t upset Philip. Then, he glanced over to Jefferson. He was fidgeting, glancing away awkwardly. With a start, Alex realized he must have actually had fun. Somehow, Jefferson was actually really good with kids, if Philip’s excitement meant anything; and now he was standing there, in Alex’s house, looking more awkward and vulnerable than Alex had ever seen him.

“Yeah… yeah, he can stay. If he wants to.” Alex didn’t even want to guess what his face looked like right now. He wasn’t even sure what his feelings looked like right now. It was all a mess of exposed wires, his entire worldview turned on its head.

Jefferson flinched in surprise for a moment, eyes snapping to Alex. Then, he gauged Alex’s pure, undiluted confusion, and a smile slowly took his face, one that more closely resembled the teasing smirks Alex was used to. Now though, it seemed just a little less aggressive than Alex remembered.

“I suppose I can stay and tell your Dad all about how you skipped your last class, looked up his workplace online, and then bussed there all by yourself without telling anybody.” Jefferson shrugged, nonchalant.

“What! Mr. Jefferson, no!” Philip whined, even as he smiled broadly. “I’m gonna get grounded!”

Jefferson laughed. “Well, whose fault is that? You’re a little troublemaker!”

Philip spouted denials in between giggles. Alex felt his paradigm shift further off axis. “I guess I’ll get started,” Alex said, quiet and distant. He stood up and edged his way to the kitchen. Jefferson and Philip continued to chat in his hallway.

Somewhere between numb and completely unsure of himself, Alex turned the oven on and got out a frozen pizza. He took as much time as he could retrieving the round pan and opening the pizza box. Replaying in his mind was the smile Jefferson had made at Philip. His stomach flipped again.

“Hey,” Jefferson’s voice was calm and subdued, but made Alex jump a foot anyways. “I put the TV on for Philip.” He was right behind Alex, nearly crowding him into the counter. “I assume you want to know what’s been going on? No one’s been on the same page today.”

Alex swallowed. It wasn’t the first time Jefferson had crowded him, Alex had realized over time that it was more a matter of not knowing about personal space, rather than an active bid at intimidation. It was also overwhelming, especially now. “Uh,” Alex started, horrified at the squeak his voice made. “I guess not.”

Jefferson smirked- how could he not?- but relented, backing up a step. “It really wasn’t all that crazy. The kid showed up in the last hour of work, and no one else would do it, so I watched him. Tried to call your phone, I’m assuming it’s dead.” Alex dug into his pocket, pulling out a very dead phone. He paled. “No, it’s fine, it’s done.” Jefferson waved his hand dismissively. “I didn’t- I mean, it wasn’t awful.”

Alex paused at Jefferson’s stutter. His ears were pink. Adorable, Alex thought, then shook it from his mind. “Thank you,” he said instead.

“Uhhh,” Jefferson’s ears turned pinker. “No offense, but that sounds so weird coming from you.” Suddenly, he started laughing. “And I just said 'no offense’, which is even weirder!”

Alex snorted. Giggles stumbled their way between his lips, turning into chuckles, then full blown laughter. “Oh my God,” Alex wheezed, “This is so weird!”

Jefferson was howling right beside him. “I know, right?!”

Their laughs petered off, save for a quiet snicker from the distance. Both their heads whipped around- Philip peeked from the doorway. “Dad hasn’t laughed like that in ages,” He said knowingly. “You guys should hang out more. Hey, can Mr. Jefferson come with us to the movie, next time?”

Alex flushed, his mind stumbling to a stop, not sure if it was from the sheer audacity of the question, or how the idea of going out with Jefferson sounded too much like a date. His only saving grace was that it was probably the last thing Jefferson wanted, anyways. It didn’t matter that the sight of him being so nice to Philip did things to Alex’s heart.

“That sounds nice. If your Dad agrees.” Jefferson gave Philip an indulgent smile, then turned to Alex, question standing.  A quiet blush graced his cheekbones as well. He looked so much more attractive- cute, Alex’s brain supplied- when it was open like this. Usually, Jefferson’s appearance was the only attractive thing about him. Alex realized suddenly that he was gone- had been gone the moment Jefferson had revealed a side of himself that wasn’t pure opposition to everything Alex stood for.

“Alright,” Alex agreed. He needed to see where this was going. He was going to figure Jefferson out, or die trying.

SUMMARY: Your work is not the typical job, you give hand jobs for money, but instead of feeling ashamed by it you’re comfortable with it. Until a man offers you to work in his company, where you would use your abilities to please seven guys.

The first dinner was in just a couple of hours, and you were less nervous than you thought. It could be because you had only spent time with one of the seven so far, so it wouldn’t be that awkward, or maybe the reason was that you had wasted your entire morning watching Bangtan Bombs and you were sure the guys couldn’t be that bad. Not only had you those videos as references, but also some statements from the staff that Mr. Lee sent you, and even the words of Mr. Lee who assured you they were nice boys. So far you haven’t seen anything bad, and that’s why the dinner wasn’t such a horrible idea anymore.

Rule maker: Don’t forget about the dinner. [9:12]

It was the first time Namjoon sent you something and you smiled, like a real leader apparently his messages were short and straight to the point.

You: OMW [9:12]

Rule maker: :) [9:15]

I am slowly but surely trying to deal with the salt I have for MCU Wanda and MCU in general.

“Stark?”

Tony nearly threw his tablet.

Wanda shrank backward, frowning. She felt the need to apologize but it got stuck in her throat. Ever since her first apology where Tony had simply turned his back on her, she’d realized he hadn’t wanted to hear it.

Tony put a hand over his heart, took a deep breath, then turned toward her. “Yes, Ms. Maximoff?”

Wanda gripped her phone in her hands tightly, then charged forward. “Vision and I joined Tinder to learn more about human interaction together.”

Tony’s hand over his heart turned from trying to catch his breath to more of a clutching of pearls in horror. “Oh my God. Why?

“Vision is still learning social cues,” Wanda explained, and then paused, because adding her reasoning would be giving him a piece of herself that she wasn’t ready to lay bare. Then again—she had seen his fears. Perhaps she needed to be laid bare to Tony. “I’m—when my brother and I joined Hydra, my learning of social niceties was stunted as well. And I thought—”

“You thought Tinder was the way to learn?” Tony asked, appalled.

“I joined MeetMe, too…” Wanda began, but trailed off when Tony groaned and dragged his hands down his face.

“Honey,” Tony said, and Wanda bristled instinctively until she realized there was no condescension in his tone, and remembered that Tony preferred nicknames to people’s actual names. “Tinder is mostly for dating. Delete that one.”

“Okay, but, um—” Wanda hemmed and hawed, trying to figure out how to continue. “…I get the exact same messages on MeetMe. And some of these men are—I tell them I’m not interested in that, and they blow up at me. Even though MeetMe says it’s for friends.”

“Pepper gets creeped on with her LinkedIn account,” Tony informed her, tucking his tablet under his arm. “If it’s a private account, there will always be a creep that will try to hit on you.”

Wanda frowned down at her phone. “I also came to you because you’re—a numbers man?”

Tony paused, growing cautious again. “Yeah?”

“…I mean, statistically speaking, these men can’t possibly all have nine inch penises.”

Tony put a hand over his chest again. “Jesus Christ, I’m so glad these things didn’t exist when I was a child.” He paused. “…Fourteen-year-old me would have loved it but looking back on it that’s probably not good.”

That… explained a few things about Tony that she’d gleaned from his mind.

“Listen,” Tony sighed. “The best thing to do is block all the guys that get abusive. Hell, block all the guys that start messages with sex talk. Block every person that sends you a dick pic.”

“But I must learn to deal with these people,” Wanda insisted. “Properly. I must learn to control myself and my powers.”

Tony sighed again, frowning at her, then held his hand up. “Okay, just—wait a minute.”

“Okay,” Wanda answered quietly, and watched as Tony began to pace.

It took a few minutes, but then he stopped right in front of her, grabbed her shoulders, and leaned in. It wasn’t as intimidating as it might have been in the past.

“Tell them that you don’t fuck with guys over seven inches,” Tony began.

“WHAT,” burst out of Wanda’s mouth before he could continue.

“Shh,” Tony said, waving her outrage away. “And seven is really pushing it. Listen. The average vagina is three to four inches long when not aroused. It’ll elongate when you are! But without the arousal, it’s three to four inches. You don’t wanna cram nine inches up there.”

Wanda kind of wanted to die even if this was good information.

“So tell them you only take seven inches, and watch these losers who think size makes up for skill backpedal and say oh no, they really are only seven inches. Boys are stupid, Wanda.”

“Really?” Wanda asked skeptically.

Tony nodded. “Yes.

Wanda wasn’t sure she believed him. “Well, alright.”

“Stupid,” Tony insisted again.

She nodded. “Okay.”

“Okay,” Tony agreed, then gave her a pat on the shoulder and turned to leave. “This was weird please ask Clint next time.”

Clint probably wouldn’t have given her very good advice. Sometimes he treated her like a child, who needed to be protected. Wanda wasn’t a child; she was an adult, who could make her own decisions. That was part of the reason she’d struggled after Ultron—she hadn’t been held accountable for her actions.

And maybe she thought she hadn’t needed to be held accountable then either. She had been angry and—well. That didn’t matter now. She had made mistakes, and now she had to pay for them. It was something that she was coming to grips with.

Wanda had hope that people would one day see beyond her mistakes, though. People had seen past Tony’s after all. Tony hadn’t let his mistakes define him. She may have to try a little harder to be accepted after what she did, but she would do continue to try anyway, even though there were certainly going to be people who never forgave her. It was what she deserved. She understood that now.

“Why did Tony just tell you the average depth of a woman’s vagina?” Natasha asked, snapping her gum.

Wanda threw her phone with a yell. The only thing that saved it was her magic.

“Actually never mind, I don’t care.” Natasha snapped her gum again, flopping down onto the couch. “The average dick is five inches by the way.”

“Oh. Um. Thank you,” Wanda replied, then hurried away before she was told anything else about the human body.

“Have you spoken to Raven?”

“No - I’m pretty sure Abby’s got her under constant watch cause of that black eye she gave Byrne.” *yn* spoke sarcastically, crossing her arms in front of her as she spoke.

“I don’t blame her for getting so riled up, those people have no right to decide what happens to Finn. Neither do the grounders for that matter.” Bellamy growled bitterly as he thought about the news the camp had received about Lexa’s demand.

“Mm.” *yn* hummed, only half listening as she replayed the last few hours events in her mind.

Here, of all places - Chapter 1

“Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ…”

Her back was sore, but only with a fraction of the pain her head was pounding with. The light of the newborn day trespassed the windows uninvited, piercing her eyelids and turning her sight from oblivious black to annoying red. Underneath her, the warmness of a blanket kept her naked body from freezing on the floor. Clearly not the best bed to avoid spending the rest of the day with a battered spine. Her right hand had crept all the way up to her eyes, scrubbing them from the much needed sleep that still harassed them. But as reality settled back in her bones, a weird feeling began to conquer the rest of her body. Something glossy, extremely soft lay under her left hand, resting in turn on top of her belly and around her hips. Tentatively, she opened one amber eye, squinting under the acute brightness.
