From the Other Side of the Signing Table

“I don’t know what to say to you,” the girl said. “Um, thanks, I guess.”

“Thanks is good,” I replied.

Silence stretched, punctuated only by the scuffle of a Sharpie on a page.

We were in the same boat, the girl and I — both at a book festival, both at the end of a long day full of people, both in a signing line that had been going on for an hour already. There was only one big difference between us: she was on one side of the table, and I was on the other. Sometimes that difference seems to matter more than others.

Before I was published, I read a lot of accounts of what it was like to have your work out there, but I never read anything about what it was like to have yourself out there. I suppose I never really thought about it, to tell you the truth. I thought you wrote a book and hopefully people liked it and if I thought about book tours at all, I figured they involved standing on a stage for a bit before disappearing into a rental car. The truth, however, is that now — ten years and fifteen novels in to my career — most of my hours in front of people are spent in a signing line. Forty minutes on a stage or behind a table for a panel, and then two or three hours meeting a few hundred strangers. I had no idea what it would be like.

Saw Great Comet yesterday (7-30-17), and I just wanted to share some of my experience with you guys! I was sitting in the rear mezz, which I highly recommend!

*I'mma skip over a lot of the main details just because they’ve already been covered, but I’ll try to include things that were particular to this show/not often talked about.

“Prologue”

• There’s a little vignette right before the show starts where Andrey is leaving for war, and it begins with Natasha screaming the most heartbreaking no you’ve ever heard in ur life.
• When Oak came out, there was thunderous applause. Like, it went on for at least a full minute. I was so happy.
• Also, hearing that first accordion note reduced me to tears bc I’m sensitive™.

“Pierre”

• So lemme talk about Oak’s voice real quick. Someone noted that it’s this perfect blend between Groban’s smoothness and Malloy’s roughness, and I have to wholeheartedly agree. It’s absolutely beautiful. He’s a beautiful Pierre.
• Also, he plays Pierre with a lot of melancholy. It’s almost as though he’s always on the verge of tears.
• “He’s charming; he has no sex.” While the ladies are skipping around him, Hélène is conducting them, and it’s hilarious.
• “I pity you. I pity me. I pity you.” — Oak sings these lines so gutturally. His agony echoes off the very walls of the Imperial.
• “Pierre” received a long applause as well.

“Moscow”

• GRACE MCLEAN DESERVED TO BE NOMINATED FOR A TONY AWARD!1! HOLY CRAP. HER VOCALS BRING THE HOUSE DOWN!!!!!!!
• The moment she belts her first lines, you know exactly what kind of personality Marya D. has, and that’s a tribute to her actress. Srsly.
• During the song, Marya will sometimes act maternally to Sonya, but the moment Natasha comes back into sight, she’ll roughly push Sonya away, and it’s hilarious.
• Natasha’s humming is absolutely heartbreaking. It’s one of the many moments in the musical when you realize how young she is.

“The Private and Intimate Life of the House”

• There were understudies for both Mary and Bolkonsky/Andrey, Courtney Bassett and Ken Clark respectively. They were wonderful. Ken’s performance especially stood out to me.
• “People enjoy me, though…” Before he sang these lines, he held eye contact with a person across from him for, like, five seconds, and it was incredibly funny. (Same goes for him patting his wig and powder flying into the air.)
• “BRING ME MY SLIPPERS! YES, FATHER. YES, FATHER. BRING ME MY WIIIIIIIIIIIIINE.”
• The audience interaction in this one is A+. Mary’s suitor and Bolkonsky’s cheap French thing draw huge laughs from the crowd.
• “They are there upon his head.” I’ve seen a few posts where people lament that the audience laughs at this line, but I truly think it’s supposed to be laughed at. Mary is kind of coy when she says it, like she’s laughing at it herself. After that, though, her mood dips, slowly sinking into this utterly palpable reproach.
• The audience was completely silent.
• While she’s singing her final lines, Bolkonsky is slowly making his way back to his chair, and your heart shatters as you watch. He’s clutching his back and using the railing for support. When he finally collapses in his chair, he kinda puts his head in his hands.

“Natasha and the Bolkonskys”

• Towards the beginning of the song, Natasha and Mary hoist chairs over their heads and join a table of people on stage. It’s hilarious. They really milk the awkwardness of the moment.
• “Constrained and strained” is so frickin’ good. When Courtney and Denée sing it, it’s really low and creepy.
• “Says the mean, old man in his underthings” drew huge laughs, especially bc of Bolkonsky’s hand movements. He kept gesturing towards his entire body.

“No One Else”

• Honest to God, I could write essays on how perfect Denée Benton and her performance of this song is. She emotes so beautifully. Her voice, her movements, her facial expressions all come together to create Natasha, a young, lost girl who wants nothing more than to see Andrey again.
• I cried (obviously).
• The blue light is absolutely gorgeous in this song. (The blue light is meant to be the moon.)
• At one point, Andrey shows up, and snow begins to lightly fall on him. He reads one of Natasha’s letters, brings it to his lips tenderly before walking away, and just behind him, almost able to reach him, is Natasha, her face the perfect picture of despair.
Denée Benton.
• The applause after this song was long and well-deserved.

“The Opera”

• Just for the record, songs like this one, “The Duel”, and “The Abduction"—where all of the cast members are out—are absolutely electric. The energy is incredible.
• “The opera, the opera…” Marya D. belts these lines so loudly, lololol.
• On one side, you can spot Heath Saunders as one of the opera goers, and lemme just tell you guys, that long, black coat suits him.
• “Hélène and Dolokhov arm-in-arm…” They aren’t so much arm-in-arm as they are passionately making out on stage. Omg. I love them.
• “Noooo, I’m enjoying myself this evening.” Pierre pumps his fist and smiles this absolutely giddy smile.
• When Marya sees that Natasha is talking to Hèlène, she runs up and pushes Nat behind her.
• To indicate that the “curtain rises,” some of the light bulbs retract. It’s a cool effect.
• I know the literal opera part of the song sounds incredibly weird on the recording, but in person, it’s more hilarious than you’d think. The actors are doing ridiculous things and making animalistic noises, lol.
• When it’s over, the spotlight turns to Natasha and Sonya. Sonya’s asleep, lolololololol.
• Right before Anatole comes in and around the time Natasha begins to “pass into a state of intoxication”, she hallucinates Andrey being injured during the war. The two circle each other around Pierre’s salon, simply gazing into each other’s eyes, and it’s intense.
• Anatole’s entrance is frickin’ ridiculous and amazing all at once.
• You know those measured beats at the beginning of his introduction? During each of those, he sharply turns his head in a new direction, ostensibly to show off his head.
• Also, his walk is literally a swagger.
• Either in this scene or during “Natasha and Anatole”, he caught a lady unaware and kissed her on the cheek. She jumped so badly, lolololol.

“Natasha and Anatole”

• During the intro of the song, Anatole checks himself out in a mirror before posing himself perfectly for the moment Natasha turns around to see him.
• Also, let’s talk about Lucas Steele for a hot minute. He is Anatole Kuragin, from his almost exotic voice to the way he walks. Out of the cast, I’d say that Steele is the one who plays the crowd the best.
• Throughout this number, Anatole and Natasha play the roles of pursuer and the pursued. Natasha tries so hard not to be wrapped under his spell. :(
• When he takes the flower off her head, Natasha makes a perfect :O face. I love Denée Benton.
• “And kiss me on the neck.” He does manage to get this kiss, and it’s really rough-looking.
• “How do you like Moscow?” Lolololololololol.
• For the most part, the two are roving around the stage (mostly bc Natasha is running away from Anatole), but at the end, they sit down next to each other, and it’s played as a really significant moment.

“The Duel”

• “The Duel” is epic live. Holy freakin’ crap.
• The moment Dolokhov, Pierre, and Anatole clink their glasses together, the strobe lights come on and the real party begins. There’s intensely sexual dancing, half-naked people, and glow sticks everywhere.
• Y'all, I saw Marya D., in a skin tight, black costume no less, whip several people with a riding crop with my own two eyes.
• Also, in the very back of the rear mezz, there was, like, a threesome going on.
• The energy during this song was absolutely nuts.
• Sonya’s party outfit is so cute. It’s an almost innocent looking dress, and she’s wearing bright sunglasses.
• The ensemble echoing back “corpulence” is really frickin’ funny.
• Nick Choksi really highlights the psychopathic part of Dolokhov, especially in the “Here’s to the health of married women” sequence. His movements are jubilant but also shark-like. He and Hélène make out for a loooooong time.

“Dust and Ashes”

• Oak’s “Dust and Ashes” is an absolute privilege to hear, and if you have the chance, I would go and listen to it while you can. His voice could have shaken the entire foundation of the theater.
• While he’s singing, the entire cast lines up in the rear mezz to provide backup vocals, and it’s incredibly poignant. (Also, tho, Lucas Steele stood in front of me, and I died.)
• “Don’t let me die while I’m like this…” During these lines, Oak starts crying, and it guts you.
• There was a two minute applause for “Dust and Ashes”, and I was on the verge of crying just bc he was getting such a huge applause.
• Oak is perfect, okay?

“Sunday Morning” / “Charming”

• “Everyone sees a man!” Ingrid delivers this line so well. It got a huge laugh.
• AHHHHHHHHH, now here’s a symbolic moment for you. When Natasha says that she can see a shape in the darkness as she’s looking into the mirror, Pierre is standing up right behind her. Pierre is her future.
• (The moment Nat leaves, he sits back down.)
• Amber Gray can slay me, tbh. “Charming” is everything I could have ever asked for.
• When she walks in, the lights are bright behind her, and her hood is over her head, effectively masking her identity. It’s a really neat moment.
• The lights dim when she takes off her hood.
• Natasha is in her undergarments throughout the song until Hélène gives her her cloak. (Btw, Natasha looks gr8 in said cloak.)
• At some point, Natasha starts mimicking Hélène’s movements, and it’s adorable but also a really nice character touch. Same goes for Hélène snatching Andrey’s necklace off of Nat’s neck and exchanging it for her own pearls.

“The Ball”

• This number was enchanting. I had a hard time focusing on the main stage bc the dancers in the rear mezz. were so mesmerizing in their movements.
• Also, tho, the ensemble dancers mimicked what Anatole and Natasha were dancing at times.
• When Natasha tries to run away from Anatole, he pursues her up the steps and forces their first kisses. She’s surprised at first, but gives into it with abandon a few seconds later. The kiss lasts a very long time.
• At the end of “The Ball”, Natasha and Anatole run through the doors together and then turn to face the audience. They’re holding hands. The lights are bright behind them.

“Letters”

• “Letters” is such a frickin’ jam, y'all.
• When it starts, the cast members spill out of the double doors singing.
• At the beginning of “Letters”, just as Pierre is addressing Andrey, Andrey appears at the top of the stairs. Pierre faces him.
• “I see nothing but the candles in the mirror.” For one of the very few times in the play, Natasha and Pierre face each other.
• The geometric symmetry in the choreography is really wonderful all around. For instance, at one point, Mary, Natasha, and Pierre are all positioned in a triangle, taking turns facing one another.
• Anatole’s love letter was an absolute showstopper. People were whistling, clapping, and screaming when he started holding those really long notes. Holy crap @ Lucas Steele!!!!!

“Sonya and Natasha” / “Sonya Alone”

• “Sonya and Natasha” is intense. I was on the edge of my seat for their fighting.
• “I’m soooooooooooooo happy, and sooooooooooo frightened.” Kill it, Denée!!!! (When she’s singing about her happiness, her arms are extended widely, and when she’s singing about being frightened, she withdraws into herself.)
• “I have no will. My life is his.” During these lines, Natasha is wrapped around an increasingly agonized Sonya.
• “Sonya Alone” is one of the most powerful numbers in the show, and you really don’t recognize it until you see it live.
• The theater is almost completely dark with the exception of a spotlight on Sonya. Throughout the entirety of the song, Natasha is ambling about, tightly clutching Anatole’s letter.
• Sonya never takes her eyes off of Natasha, and your heart can’t help but ache for both of them.
• Ingrid Michaelson is truly a wonderful Sonya—maybe not as sure as Brittain but she definitely doesn’t lack heart.
• On the first “I will protect your name and your heart”, Natasha stumbles on a stair, staggered by the weight of her friend’s words. Then, she walks to the opposite side of the stage, only to be completely stopped by Sonya’s, “I know you’ve forgotten me.”
• For the rest of the song, Natasha is still, her head inclined towards Sonya.

“Preparations” / “Balaga”

• When Pierre greets Anatole at the beginning of this number, it’s almost as though he’s caught Anatole out. Anatole had been trying to sneak past unnoticed.
• Anatole shaves in front of a mirror during “Preparations”, lol. At one point, he turns to the crowd with shaving cream still on his face.
• Dolokhov sings his arguments at Anatole very fiercely during this song, even more so than he does in the recording.
• I looooooooooooove “Balaga”. It’s such a wild performance. Paul Pinto moves with such agility and manic energy. The ensemble hands out the egg shakers during this one.

“The Abduction”

• “THE ABDUCTION” IS SO GOOOD. HOLY CRAPPP.
• Anatole singing “WHOOOOA” while swinging his green jacket cleared my skin, watered my crops, and cured my depression.
• The whole theater is absolutely alive with commotion. There’s a dance off between a guy in the rear mezz and a guy on stage that’s frickin’ amazing.
• People are doing backflips.
• Natasha smashes a painting on Balaga’s head.
• Marya and Hélène are making out.
• Pierre is doing a cute jig.
• It’s beautiful, beautiful chaos.
• When Pierre screams his “WHOA” part, everyone collapses on the floor, absolutely exhausted, and then, then, the most wonderful thing happens.
• Pierre giggles.
• “Hee-hee-hee.”
• God, I love Oak.
• “Wait, wait. First we have to sit down.” Anatole made room for himself next to a girl, which was hecking funny, but what was even funnier was that the girl leaned her head on Anatole’s shoulder. The whole theater dissolved in laughter. Anatole held the quiet for a comedically long period before getting up, and when he did, he kissed the girl on the cheek. It was really cute.
• When Marya entered at the end of the song, surrounded by this harsh, red light, there were audible gasps in the audience. People weren’t expecting her, lol.

“In My House”

• GRACE MCLEAN DESERVED A TONY NOMINATION: PART TWO.
• She acted her butt out through this entire song. I’m serious.
• Her voice is dangerously quiet until, “YOU LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SPEAK TO YOU. YOU LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SPEAK TO YOU.”
• The tension in the room was palpable.
• Also, all of the yelling you hear on the recording? It’s so much more intense live. It’s fierce enough to make you flinch.
• “Don’t touch me!” At one point when Natasha screamed this, she physically pushed Marya away, and Marya wasn’t angry so much as she was stunned.
• “Natasha’s whole body shook with noiseless, convulsive sobs.” She was literally bent over, grasping the railing like she couldn’t breathe.
• “And she threw herself down on the sofa.” Natasha stands erect with her arms crossed and her head buried in them. The spotlights focus on her, and that’s when Marya softens.
• You can see the fight leave Grace McLean’s body. Her voice is incredibly tender.

“A Call to Pierre” / “Find Anatole”

• GRACE MCLEAN DESERVED A TONY NOMINATION: PART THREE.
• Her face is absolutely devastated as she’s talking to Pierre. Like, I still have chills thinking about it.
• Also, Pierre is waking up from a nap at the beginning of this number, lol.
• “I have been… studying.” He glances quickly at the place he had been napping.
• The sheer power in Oak’s voice really comes out in these next songs. Anger and fear simmers behind the way he sings. A+++
• At the beginning of “Find Anatole”, he truly sounds out of breath. His body is fully bent over for a couple of seconds.
• “He can’t be married!” The absolute horror in Denée’s voice nearly slaughters you, tbh.
• When Pierre discovers Anatole and Hélène and gets mad, they start to run away.
• Pierre is livid when he finds Anatole and Hélène. I mean, livid.

“Pierre and Anatole” / “Natasha Very Ill”

• Pierre nearly throttling Anatole is a sight™.
• “Amuse yourself with women like my wife!” The spotlight shines on Hélène as she stands up and bristles indignantly. What an amazing character touch.
• During that long pause before Pierre apologizes to Anatole, Natasha walks right between the two and drinks the arsenic. A few moments later, it begins taking effect, and she starts screaming. It’s a terrible, convincing sound. She runs off stage. Marya and Sonya follow her.
• “FOR PETERSBUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURG!” :’)))
• There was a pause between “Pierre and Anatole” and “Natasha Very Ill” while we all wildly applauded that C#. Holy crap @ Lucas Steele!!!!!!!!!!!!
• “Natasha Very Ill” is sad. Everyone is devastated, especially Sonya and Marya.

“Pierre and Andrey”

• Ken Clark is an amazing Andrey. He has a v. human approach to the prince.
• When Pierre and Andrey are trading insults, there’s a lot of affection between them. It’s really as though the two haven’t seen each other in quite awhile.
• Andrey’s somewhat tender tone continues until he asks Pierre to confirm whether the rumors he had heard were true, and when Pierre replies in the affirmative, that is the very moment when Andrey assumes his colder exterior.
• It frickin’ breaks your heart.
• #PoorAndrey
• “If you wish to be my friend, never speak of that again.” During “If you wish to be my friend,” Andrey’s voice breaks seemingly on the edge of tears, and then it hardens at the end as he jabs a finger in Pierre’s chest. The moment he does so, though, he immediately looks horrified. Did I really just threaten my friend?
• “Well, goodbye” is soft.
• #PoorAndrey
• CRAP. I FORGOT THE WORST PART OF THIS SONG. Behind Andrey and Pierre, Natasha and Sonya are standing in a darkened corner. Whenever Andrey refers to Natasha, she flinches and buries herself into Sonya.
• :(

“Pierre and Natasha” / “The Great Comet of 1812”

• “Pierre and Natasha” broke me.
• At the beginning of the song, Natasha slowly makes her way down the staircase, entirely dependent on the railing to get down. It tears at your heart. You can’t help but remember how lovely and vibrant she had been at the beginning of the play.
• The nightgown she’s in makes her look so small, and with her braided hair, she looks just like a little girl.
• Oak emotes his lyrics so tenderly, so gently in this one. His voice is always on the verge of breaking.
• “She began to cry…” Yeah, no. She sobbed, and you sobbed with her. Her whole body was shaking. She had to hold on to the rail.
• An interesting tidbit: Hélène is sitting right behind Natasha, and she has her head in her hands like she’s reacting to the sadness of this scene, too.
• “All over…” At this point, Natasha is walking back up the staircase, and the theater is absolutely silent. You could have heard a pin drop. Oak says the written line to her back.
• I’ll never forget the way Oak delivered it, and I will never want to either.
• His voice simply broke on “if I were free”.
• Pierre turns away from her, and then she turns towards him, slowly making her way back to him.
• During her last lines, Natasha touches his cheek, and it is sincerely one of the most beautiful moments of this very beautiful play.
• “The Great Comet of 1812” was moving, too.
• The theater very much looked like a beautiful night sky. The comet prop was stunning, too.
• Pierre sat down at the end of the song and gazed reverentially up at the comet.

This play was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, and I recommend it with all of my heart and soul. Please, please support it if you can.

Dean Winchester Has an Open Mind For a Different View

We’ve all watched the epic recap, right? So many parts of it stood out to me. Like the theme of family and trust - that sense of unity that the song is promoting. 

So close, no matter how far

I feel like putting the whole lyrics in bold because every word matters here. I think it’s such a gorgeous choice and holy fuck does it not bode well for October? It does. Oh, it really does, because look at how they’ve combined image with phrase.

Ketch. FUCKING KETCH PEOPLE! He’s used in both of these moments! 

Ketch, who continuously represented Dean’s suppressed desire (HE ENTERED THE SCENE FIRING THE FUCKING GRENADE LAUNCHER FOR FUCK’S SAKE), as well as served as a reminder that the reason Dean is not “a killer”, which Ketch kept pressing on to try and manipulate him (mirroring Crowley) is because Dean is capable of loving unconditionally and Dean knows this now. It’s made him stronger. It’s an anchor into himself, into the person he wants to be, not fears he might become. It’s his bullshit detector, if you will. He won’t be manipulated anymore based on any fear that he’s not worthy of anything better.

Also, um, THERE ARE BURNED ANGEL WINGS LEADING INTO THESE WORDS, THERE’S THE BROTHERS HACKING AWAY AT THAT WALL TO THESE WORDS, THERE’S DEAN’S INTERNAL WALLS ACTUALLY COMING DOWN TO THESE WORDS!! (I fucking love you SPN writers cast crew ALL OF YOU)

Oh, they even INCLUDED A VISUAL TO UNDERLINE HOW THE GRENADE LAUNCHER META HAS BEEN COMPLETELY ACCURATE, juxtaposing KETCH using it when he arrived on the scene with DEAN finally blasting away with it:

AND THEY CUT SO THAT IT LOOKS LIKE DEAN’S USE OF IT IS TIED TO CAS!!! AND REMINDS US THAT CAS IS COMPLETELY UNSHAKEN BY THE BLAST!!! (DANCE WITH ME) (DANCE WITH ME!!)

And then, after flashes of flashes of flashes of quick, quick edits of what has transpired throughout the season (including the Pushing Up Against a Wall Moment AND LARRY), we land in the gifs below. We land in a sudden, drawn out reminder of how it all ended. And what’s most significant here - apart from the sudden slow pace and the absolutely startling use of sound as Dean screams that no (how IMPORTANT do you think this piece of dialogue is moving into S13?) (pretty important?) (I would agree) - most significant when looking at the recap as a whole is, of course, the chosen lyric as we linger on Cas’ almost too serene face:

Has there been any other indication that Dean’s bisexuality will be addressed in the coming season and that his feelings for Cas will take centre stage and that this show is readying itself to deliver one great, big blow to the NORM of it all?

Well, there’s Wonder Woman.

There’s Bob Singer saying this season will be smaller and more personal than S12, which was so goddamn character driven and focused on emotional growth that I don’t even know… That’s a lie. I do know exactly what smaller and more personal means. I know exactly. Endgame, people.

There’s Jensen saying that if Dean once thought he’d go out in a blaze of glory, he now sees himself hanging it up, if Sam isn’t there anymore. (yeah I know) (I think I turned into atoms for a moment reading that quote) (hanging it up as in settling down and finding contentment with the man he loves no?) (yes!)

Oh, right and there’s this.

EVERYTHING POINTS TO GOOD THINGS!! EVERYTHING!! If one or two things pointed I could shrug and go “We’ll see” - but EVERYTHING IS STOMPING AND CLAPPING AND POINTING AND THROWING FUCKING CONFETTI IN OUR FACES!! IT IS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO GO WITH IT!!

S13, peeps. S13 is going to be historic. 

in light of recent events

here’s my great comet experience from 6/15/17
GREAT COMET NOTES (this is like a month after I saw it and I didn’t know it when I saw it so I prolly missed everything)

•the outside of the theatre before you go in looks like a war bunker there’s torn up posters and everything!!!
•we technically had the worst seats in the house and we got no interactions but it’s ok
•I think sumayya has our section but I’m not sure?
•no pierogis I was depressed
•they were playing korobeiniki it was lit
•gelsey was walking around pre show what a bean
•I forgot who came up to us for the safety announcement but whoever you are I love you!!

in summary, great comet was the single most amazing and unique theatre experience I’ve ever had and i would do almost anything to get to experience again

Reasons the whole Land Before Time series is incredibly important and awesome

Even if the sequels aren’t grim as hell and don’t leave kids emotionally scarred

  • Teaches kids that we’re all equal and have anti-racism and anti-any kind of discrimination messages
  • Shows that it is usually adults who are the discriminatory ones and kids are fine until their parents teach them otherwise. Also that it is up to kids to make the difference when adults are “set in their own ways”.
  • One of the main characters is canonically neurodivergent. Spike was literally created to appeal to mentally disabed kids.
  • And none of the characters ever try to get him to change or act like them or differentiate them from him. (He doesn’t look like us, he doesn’t eat like us, yes but he still likes to play the way we do~) He’s one of the gang and they love him for who he is. 
  • Even when they find out he can talk they never pressure him into it, Ducky says he can talk when he wants to, and the point is never pushed again. Wow Spike is so important my beautiful autistic non-verbal baby I’m tearing up.
  • Also Spike is happily adopted!! And his mum loves him like the rest of her kids! But sometimes wonders if he should grow up in his own culture and wants what’s best for him and doesn’t stop him when he leaves with the other Spike tails in VIII wow A+ adoption.
  • Single parent families!!
  • Grandparents raising their grandchild and treating them like their own son.
  • Speaking of which the Grandnecks are SO AWESOME do you know how many Sharpteeth these two old people beat up in the series?? It is a lot. They are the most badass couple ever. And also adorable.

  • But also mixed with the message that adults might claim to know better than you but this isn’t always the case, although it doesn’t make them bad people.
  • And sometimes you have to follow your gut instinct than your parents’ rules. Seriously these films are so important
  • Deals with terminal illness (that is cured by special yellow flowers)
  • In one film there is an orphan who looked after younger orphans until they were all adopted and was essentially aged out of the foster care system. He’s very bitter.

  • PTERANO who is the best anti-villain (or possibly anti-hero) ever
  • He also has PTSD and is so well written
  • Not a lot of unnecessary gendering of the dinos
  • I mean Littlefoot has longer eyelashes than Cera.
  • And a few characters whose genders never get mentioned at all everyone can be trans and it’s so great
  • Mr Threehorn almost always has a good point, he just goes completely the wrong way in getting it across and he’s a fantastic character.
  • SUE who is the biggest sweetie in the universe and incredibly nice and a little shy. And steps on crocodiles for fun.
  • People hate the Yellowbellies but I get a lot of autistic metaphors out of them. I mean they’re not great at looking after themselves in some situations, but Littlefoot discovers they have their own survival techniques that he doesn’t have and their own way of looking at things and there’s nothing wrong with that.
  • The Yellowbelly “wise one” is non-verbal and also makes friends with Spike and it’s the cutest ever.
  • Shorty thinking Cera is awesome. The most fragile ego in the world validating the other most fragile ego in the world.
  • When the kids decided to raise a baby Sharptooth.
  • Tria is an absolutely wonderful step-mother.

The' self-titled debut album from the One Direction singer comes out Friday.

Promoting a new album is hard work, and for Harry Styles, that work involves gamely commenting on One Direction fan-fiction theories.

“Oh, is that a thing?” he said, amused by the internet chatter linking his new song Sweet Creature to his 1D bandmate Louis Tomlinson. “Well, whatever it is that it makes one feel. But I think if you listen to the lyrics, you can work out what it’s about.”

Styles’ charming, British-accented modesty aside, the 23-year-old One Direction singer is poised to become one of the world’s biggest pop stars with the release of his self-titled debut album (out Friday), a collection of music that Styles describes as “songs about stories, and another group of songs delving into, ‘Why did I feel like that.’”

His first single Sign of the Times was a Biblically-epic debut, drawing comparisons to David Bowie and Elton John, a logical progression from the classic-rock nostalgia heard on One Direction’s final two albums. Epic Movie (Re)Watch #124 - Zootopia

1) From the very start this film is excellent storytelling. The opening scene where young Judy and her classmates clearly establishes the conflict of predator vs. prey and the biases that come from that, the film’s humor and heart, and Judy as a character.

2) My mother is an actuary. My brother is studying to be an actuary. Actuaries don’t do this.

Little Jaguar: “Today I can hunt for tax exemptions. I’m going to be an actuary!”

3) Judy’s parents (Don Lake & Bonnie Hunt) are so funny in such a sad way.

Stu: “Judy, you ever wonder how your mom and me got to be so darn happy?”

Judy: “Nope.”

Stu: “Well, we gave up on our dreams and we settled. Right, Bon?”

Bonnie: “Oh yes, that’s right Stu. We settled hard.”

5) The police academy scene gives wonderful exposition. It sets up the environment and rules of Zootopia’s various ecosystems in a way that feeds into Judy’s conflict and character.

Goodwin (a massive Disney fan herself) breathes perfect life into Hopps. The best voice over work is when you’re not distracted by the voice actor. When their voice and their heart match with the character so perfectly that you don’t hear - say - Kristen Bell as Anna or Mike Myers as Shrek, you only hear the character’s. Goodwin is able to balance Judy’s massive optimism and heart along with the scenes where Judy has lost those things perfectly. I don’t think anyone else could have voiced Hopps as well as Goodwin.

7) If you want to avoid a slew of bad animal puns, don’t look too hard at Judy’s iPod.

Written by Sia, Tor Erik Hermansen, and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, the theme song which deserved an Oscar nomination captures Judy’s optimism and struggles perfectly. The song’s lyrics speak of optimism in the face of constant failure, a theme which is very relevant to Judy in the first half of the film. It also provides the perfect backdrop to the visual introduction of Zootopia as Judy enters the city on train.

11) I love the way the filmmakers handled Judy’s office discrimination. She is treated just as a token bunny, someone who’s only there for PR. Except she was top of her class at Zootopia police academy: a difficult feat for anybody, let alone a bunny. But this just feeds into the biases Bogo already has about Judy: she’s not really that good, they just said she was because she’s a bunny. That plays into real life way more than it probably should.

12) Wow, I did not catch how entirely speciesist this line was until now:

Ice Cream Parlor Owner [to Nick]: “Look, you probably can’t read…”

Damn that’s speciesist.

13) Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde.

Remember how I said great voice over work is noted by not realizing you’re listening to a voice over artist? The same can be said of Bateman’s performance of Wilde, 100%. To start, Bateman captures Wilde’s surface level of sly con artists WONDERFULLY well. He’s devilish and charming in the same vein as Danny Ocean or Han Solo, and Bateman expresses this perfectly. But as the film progresses Bateman is also able to show off Nick’s layers. His troubled past, his occasional lack of self-worth and anger at the world. And the honest level never changes. It’s not like Bateman was hired ONLY for the slyness of Nick’s role and had to power through the rest, he’s able to do it all. It’s a great voice over for a great character.

14) The relationship between Nick & Judy is the cornerstone of this film. What I personally like about it is its honesty. There’s no BIG moment when these two meet, it’s a chance encounter which grows to conflict and then budding friendship so organically you don’t even know it’s happening.

15) There is nothing even remotely superfluous in this film. Nick makes a comment about how he’s been running his popsicle con his whole life and that will come back to bite him in the butt later.

16) This pig is played by Josh Dallas, Ginnifer Goodwin’s onscreen partner in “Once Upon a Time” and real life husband.

17) The chase through Zootopia is an incredible amount of fun, especially when Judy and Duke get to Little Rodentia. The filmmakers are able to play with their concept in a visual entertaining and imaginative way, which in turn keeps us as the audience wrapped up in the world they’ve established.

Note: I’m going to take about Alan Tudyk as Duke later in the film, at a very specific moment.

18) Again, there is nothing superfluous in this film (a note I’m going to be making a lot):

Judy [after saving Mr. Big’s daughter]: “Love your hair.”

Mr. Big’s Daughter: “Aww, thank you!”

It is this little encounter (and, you know, the fact that Judy saved her life) that saves Judy & Nick from getting “iced” by Mr. Big later in the film.

19) Again, nothing superfluous in the film. As the “non-onions” that Duke stole end up being very important later on.

20) Disney is at its bets when it pokes fun at itself.

Bogo: “Life isn’t some cartoon musical where you sing a little musical and your insipid dreams MAGICALLY COME TRUE! So let it go.”

The entire DMV scene plays well not only with the concept established by the film of an animal society in a way which is funny on its own, but the continuing conflict of Judy’s eagerness, Flash’s slowness, and Nick’s desire to throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing leads to amazing comedy.

LaMarche is a noted voice over actor known primarily for his roles as Brain on “Pinky & The Brain”, various characters including Calculon on “Futurama”, and Mr. Freeze in the Batman Arkham series of video games. Here, we get to hear the veteran voice over artist do his best high pitched Brando impression.

28) This film has its fair share of nice surprises, details and twists which keeps you on your toes. The earliest of these is the revelation that the missing mammal Judy & Nick are looking for - Mr. Otterton - was in fact the one who attacked the limo driver (and not that he was the one attacked, as originally perceived).

29) This scene gives me life.

Bogo [after Judy’s witness disappears]: Two days to find the otter, or you quit. That was the deal. [Holding out hand] Badge.

Judy: But sir, we…

Bogo: Badge!

[Judy starts to turn in her badge]

Nick: Uh… no.

Chief Bogo: What did you say, fox?

Nick Wilde: Sorry, what I said was… NO! She will not be giving you that badge.[Bogo flinches] Look, you gave her a… a… a clown vest and a three wheel joke mobile and two days to solve a case you guys haven’t cracked in two weeks? Yeah, no wonder she needed to get help from a fox. None of you guys were gonna help her, were you? [Bogo starts to speak but Nick cuts him off] Here’s the thing, chief. You gave her the 48 hours, so technically we still have… 10 left, to find our Mr. Otterton. And that’s exactly what we’re gonna do. So, if you’ll excuse us, we have a very big lead to follow and a case to crack. Good day.

30) And then there’s this…

I saw this film twice in theaters and both times I was tearing up during Nick’s backstory. Anyone who has ever been bullied as a kid for being different will relate at least a little bit to what Nick went through. And it is this scene when Nick is at his most honesty with Judy, when they become pretty good friends and form a trust with each other.

31) NOTHING IN THIS FILM IS SUPERFLUOUS!!!! NOT EVEN A BLINK OR YOU’LL MISS IT STICKY NOTE ON BELLWETHER’S DESK!!!!

32) I did not think a Disney movie would make me jump like this (stop at 2:11).

33) This is incredibly rare for me, as someone who sees more than 60 films in theaters a year, but after Nick & Judy found the missing mammals and had the mayor arrested I had absolutely NO idea where the film was going after that. At all. I love it!

34) Nick’s face when Judy links the savage animals to being a predator…

35) I had a film student criticize this film not based on the merits of its story or character’s or anything, but because they didn’t understand the metaphor. He noted that it’s not a clean comparison between white people and minorities and that’s exactly the point. This film is not about the people in power vs the people who aren’t, because who’s in power? The mayor may be a lion but the most biased character in the film - Chief Bogo - is prey. Bias goes all around and it can infect anybody, no matter what you think. Even Judy, for all her merits, is biased. She carries around fox repellent all the time and even has this line:

Judy: “It’s not like a bunny can go savage.”

That’s what I love about this film. It’s universal. It’s not about one real life society, it is about all societies everywhere and how bias can infect them and taint them and it’s up to us to work against that.

36) Fun fact: I had no idea otters were predators before seeing this film.

If only all childhood bullies were like that, but again it gets to my oft-repeated point that nothing in this film is superfluous. Gideon could have easily been the one note bully from Judy’s youth who gave her the motivation to prove him wrong, but he comes back 15 years later in the most perfect way. She sees that people can change and that people who are good now are not always good (Gideon when he was younger, Judy when she was biased). It is a really important moment for her that was established all the way in the first ten minutes of this movie. I love that.

38) Judy’s apology to Nick and the way he handles it is something I truly love about this movie and their friendship as a whole.

And then I really love the little joke at the end about Judy trying to get to the pen and can’t help but wonder: was that written in the script? Was it Jason Bateman’s improv that made it into the film? It’s just so natural I must know!

39) Okay, I think this is the last time I will give this note, BUT NOTHING IN THIS MOVIE IS SUPERFLUOUS!!! This is most apparent to me when Nick does a little thing like expressing how much he likes the berries on Judy’s farm and it becomes so important to the plot latter when they switched out those berries with the Night Howlers in Bellwether’s dart gun.

45) The entire subway chase sequence is really great, because it is based heavily on the idea of action = consequence. A ram is running at the door, he gets through and hits another ram. The train goes too fast into a turn, it tips over and Judy/Nick are up a creek. It all works very nicely

I honestly think Zootopia may be a perfectly written film, and that is not something I say lightly. I made it clear above how I find nothing in the film superfluous, which is an incredible feat I think. And they did it in a way that was never boring, with entertaining characters, an intriguing mystery, and a fun world. Zootopia may be my favorite Disney animated feature film, and it’s definitely my favorite of the “Modern Era” we’re in now (The Princess and the Frog - Present). Just a great, great, great film which deserved its Best Animated Picture win at the Oscars. A true treat all around.

Hyattsville was a small town in western Kansas, known for it’s ‘biggest hay bale in America’ tourist trap and a former high school beauty queen turned national news anchor. I met the Winchester brothers one evening when I was getting coffee at a shop in town. They were singing at open mic night- the younger brother playing guitar as the older brother sang. He had an amazing, sultry voice that sent shivers down my arms. And the fact that he was absolutely gorgeous didn’t hurt either.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #94 - The Book of Life

Spoilers below.

Format: Blu-ray.

1) I watched this about a week ago - on the actual Day of the Dead - but didn’t have time to write it because I live in Chicago and the Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years. So my priorities were a little different than usual.

3) The framing device of this film (a bunch of kids at a museum being told a story) is a classic fairytale/magical realism device that can be found in films such as Big Fish. It also gives the film a plot driven reason for it’s unique animation style (the characters looking like wooden figures).

I’m not overly familiar with Day of the Dead lore outside of this film, but I think the idea of having the ruler of The Land of the Remembered (La Muerte, everything good and wonderful in the world) and the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten (Xibalba, everything that is negative in the world) be lovers is a great idea. Their relationship is tense, volatile, and can be filled with conflict, but never is it abusive. Never is it hateful. You always get a great sense of love between these two and that’s what makes it work.

6) Ron Perlman as Xibalba.

These two wouldn’t work so well together if they couldn’t stand on their own as characters. And the work so well in that field because of equal parts writing, character design, and voice over work. Ron Perlman is a regular collaborator of Guillermo Del Toro’s, the executive producer on this film, and has worked in a number of animated project before (including VP Lancer in “Danny Phantom” and Clayface in “Batman: The Animated Series”). Perlman brings a roguish charm to all his characters, even when it’s just his voice. He’s interesting, rough, and just likable! And he makes Xibalba all those things. You’re never particularly rooting against him, even though he’s technically the villain. You’re just entranced whenever he’s on screen.

7) Kate del Castillo as La Muerte.

American audiences are not as familiar with Kate del Castillo as they are with Ron Perlman, although she is one of Mexico’s most acclaimed popular actresses. As Perlman does with Xibalba, Castillo brings genuine charm, likability, and charisma to La Muerte. As well as an added fierceness that lets you know this undead ruler can keep her own when head-to-head with her darker lover. You definitely get the vibe that La Muerte is the more dangerous of these two but also the kinder, and so much of that relies on Castillo’s performance.

8) Manolo, Maria, and Joaquin.

We first meet these characters and get a sense of their relationship as children, and it’s great. Yes Manolo and Joaquin both love Maria, but they’re friends first. ALL of them are friends! Later in the film Joaquin and Manolo remain friends even when vying for Maria’s affections, and they are friends with Maria before they are lovers. And I think it’s driven home by this statement from Maria as a child:

Maria [after Manolo and Joaquin fight over who’s she is]: “I belong to no one!”

They don’t belong to each other, they chose to be friends. They chose to be with together because they genuinely like each other. I love that.

9) A huge theme of this film is also seen in Maria’s, “I belong to no one!” line and that is the theme of being true to yourself.

Both Joaquin and Manolo have huge shadows they live in (a line which is actually uttered by Joaquin later): Joaquin’s dead father was a great war hero and Manolo’s father pushes him to be a bullfighter like all the men in their family have been. It makes for a unique conflict and a great message to kids of all ages: be yourself.

10) Maria as a character.

You get a real sense of Maria as a character when we first meet her. Not only does she have the wonderful line, “I belong to no one!” but she also shows her placement of morality over societal values by freeing animals slated for slaughter. Her father sends her off to a convent to become, “a proper lady,” but…it doesn’t really work. At least, she doesn’t become his definition of proper. She is loving, kind, sweet, but fiercely independent and someone who follows her heart above all else. Zoe Saldana voices Maria, and breathes such wonderful life into the character you forget she’s acting. Everything about Maria just feel so real it’s amazing.

11) The decision to compose the film’s soundtrack from popular music recorded specifically for the movie (the mariachi version of “I Will Wait For You” being the earliest example) as well as original songs composed by Paul Williams is a great one. The copyrighted songs never feel out of place and don’t distract from the plot, instead playing perfectly into the emotion of the scene. And the original songs are made for the moments which are purely story and pure character, so they could not possibly be represented by something which was already written because this story hasn’t existed before.

12) Manolo!

All the characters in this film are written with such life and depth that lead character Manolo couldn’t POSSIBLY be an exception. He has skills as a bullfighter, but is deeply conflicted by his duty to his family and his duty to his heart. But it’s all guided by love, something with is illustrated by the inscription on his guitar (a gift from Maria, nonetheless): “Always play from the heart.” It is Manolo’s defining characteristic and defining struggle: that he wants to be himself, not his father or anyone else.

Diego Luna just…ugh! So I’ve seen Luna in small roles before (The Terminal, Elysium) but this film makes me a HUGE fan of his! I’m really looking forward to his role in Rogue One BECAUSE I loved his performance in this film so much. Manolo sings more than any other character in the film, and Luna infuses each song with such sincerity and warmth it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with his performance as Manolo. And he treats each line of dialogue the same. Like Saldana as Maria, you don’t feel like you’re listening to an actor. You’re listening to Manolo.

14) Manolo’s Father, Carlos.

I have seriously MIXED feelings about Carlos, and I think you’re supposed to. He shows a genuine desire to do the best for his son, he just doesn’t actually KNOW what’s best for his son. He pressures him into being a bull fighter because it’s the Sanchez way, and when Manolo expresses dissatisfaction with this his father shames him into doing it.

Carlos [to convince Manolo to be a bullfighter]: “Don’t you LOVE your family?”

(PS, I find this line to be the sign of an abusive relationship but maybe that’s just me.)

BUT Carlos has genuine moments of love with his son. He encourages him to tell Maria how he feels, he comforts him when he’s missing his dead mother, he actually LOVES Manolo. Hector Elizondo’s performance and the writing gets this across in a great way, and I think the film is better for it.

15) Channing Tatum as Joaquin.

I do have to say of the trio of friends, Channing Tatum’s Joaquin is probably the weakest link. BUT that’s like calling one of The Lord of the Rings movies the worst in the trilogy: it was still nominated for best picture! I think it’s definitely because you know Joaquin is the third wheel, you know that Maria loves Manolo, and so it’s hard to get behind it. And you just can see that although they’re great as friends they wouldn’t make a good couple (despite Joaquin’s hopes to the contrary).

It would’ve been easy to write Joaquin as a jerk. And although he can be a bit pig headed here and there, you understand that he’s a genuinely good friend who truly cares for Maria (even though they’re not a great fit). Tatum brings a lot of this to the role, and even though I believe he’s the only non-Hispanic actor playing a decidedly Hispanic character (Ron Perlman gets a pass because Xibalba is an otherworldly creature) he has the same warmth and sincerity as Luna and Saldana have. It’s a nice way to round out the trio of friends.

17) Joaquin’s biggest failing is probably that he buys too much into societal values, and his society’s values are…sexist. He is surprised that Maria reads, expects her to be a doting housewife (as all the high up men do), and that’s not what his heart wants it’s what he thinks should be.

This is the song Manolo sings to express his feelings for Maria, and it’s beautiful. Paul Williams has crafted a quiet, loving melody which pulls at your heartstrings and is sung beautifully by Diego Luna. I think it’s my favorite song in the film and one of the best love songs I’ve ever heard.

19) Maria is awesome, if that hasn’t been made clear already.

Maria [stopping a kiss after Manolo’s song]: “Did you think it was going to be that easy?”

She’s not the girl who falls head over heels for someone just because they sang to hear. It’s appreciated, but there needs to be more than that. I love it!

20) This film never subscribes to storied cliches. It’s not like Manolo can’t be an idiot too, as noted when he and Joaquin start to fight over Maria (which she has shown to never truly appreciate).

22) One of the conflicts in this movie that gets me going the most is how unfair everyone is to Manolo. When they were children he stopped a wild boar from hurting people, but Joaquin got credit because he saved the mayor. As adults he’s ready to fight off bandits without a magic medal, but Joaquin gets credit because he does fight them off WITH a magic medal which protects him from harm. And when Maria dies from a snake bite everyone blames him. He’s not the snake! He didn’t bite her! So bug off!

23) My brother and I laughed so hard after we heard this line:

Student [after Manolo dies]: “What is it with Mexicans and death!?”

The only reason that line isn’t racist is because it was written by a Mexican in a film directed by a Mexican which is produced by a Mexican. So it’s okay to laugh.

24) The Land of the Remembered!

The Land of the Remembered is when this film’s visual style really takes off. Gutierrez’s imagination and the animation department’s skill bleeds through every scene in this wonderful place and it really pulls you into it’s world magnificently.

25) I mentioned in my Nightmare Before Christmas recap that Burton and company did a good job of establishing minor character with small introductions, and The Book of Life (although not Burton) follows in that tradition when we meet Manolo’s family.

Each family member - from the brutish Carmelo (voiced by the film’s director) to grandpa Luis (voiced by Danny Trejo) - is given a unique character with just a few seconds of screen time and dialogue which carries through until the end of the film. It works wonderfully.

Immediately there is a difference in what is expected from Carmen Sanchez (his mom) and what there is.

Manolo: “And I became a bullfighter, just like you wanted.”

Carmen: “Me? Are you crazy?”

It turns out Manolo’s father saying his mother wanted that was…uh…wrong, to put it mildly. It’s a nice juxtaposition which establishes her as a character and not just a plot device.

28) Dude, I love this dialogue.

Xibalba [after Luis says La Muerte would never hand over her kingdom]: “She lost a bet.”

Luis: “Oh. She would do that.”

29) You get a lot of Manolo’s tender side and playing from the heart, but it’s easy to forget that he’s still a headstrong Sanchez boy. He still has the fierceness of a bull fighter, even if that’s not what he wants to do. And we see this particularly when Manolo threatens to expose Xibalba. That may not be the smartest move, but it is fierce.

31) The Candlemaker

The Candlemaker rounds out the trio of immortals here, and falls in the middle. He is not about the Land of the Remembered or the Land of the Forgotten, he creates the candles (each candle representing a life). He is this big ball of happy childlike energy which is just fun to watch. And who’d they get to place this super upbeat and positive guy with hope and optimism dripping from him?

It’s a nice change of pace from Ice Cube’s more hardboiled characters to see him play such a wonder filled creature, and to do it so well too! His voice work stands up there with the rest of the cast in that you never think you’re listening to Ice Cube, you’re just watching the Candlemaker. It’s great.

But it turns out his greatest fear isn’t killing the bull, it’s being true to himself. This ties into what I mentioned earlier: Manolo’s defining characteristic and his struggle are the same in that he wants to be himself. And we get a wonderful song to tie it up, of the same quality as “I Love You Too Much” and it is simply called “The Apology Song”. (Manolo’s father, who’s dead at this point, said that a Sanchez never apologies but after the fight is incredibly proud of his son.) It’s a nice character climax for Manolo before we get the final fight of the film.

34) When you have no idea this is coming, it’s the funniest line in the film.

35) I give massive credit to the filmmakers for the way they handled Joaquin. He and Maria are set to be married now that Manolo is dead, and he knows Maria doesn’t want it so he’s about to talk to her about it before the town is attacked by bandits. Joaquin could have easily been some Gaston type but instead we got a sincere, honest character who deepens the conflict of the film.

It’s well paced, well choreographed, brings in all the characters we’ve met so far (living and dead), gives us a nice “dance” with Manolo and Maria, is filled with nice character moments, good humor, and has Joaquin decide he’s going to be his own man and try to sacrifice himself for his friends (it doesn’t work, he survives). It’s a great climax to the film.

38) “No Matter Where You Are”, the final song in the film, is a great ball of energy and love. But more than that, it let me know something I didn’t before…

The Book of Life is great, and truly under appreciated. It’s representation of Mexican culture is unique in the animated film landscape, and gives the film a unique visual and musical style. The acting is topnotch, and you can feel through the writing/directing/character animation that it is truly a labor of love for all those involved. A great film which everyone should see.

I pumped out this fic for y’all mostly based on the fact that I’m extreme trash for Wicked, Daveed, and Aaron so this was birthed from that. “Looking a little sick, aren’t you? It’s almost showtime!”

     Glancing in the mirror, all you saw was green. Your face, your neck, your hands. All green. And for a pretty good reason: you were finally going to be whom almost every actress longs to be: Elphaba Thropp, the leading lady in Wicked. You’ve been working for this role ever since you got the chance to see Idina originated the role back in ‘03.

    “Very funny, Lin. Truly. I haven’t heard that one before.” Lin Manuel Miranda. The man was a genius. The two of you met back in 2006 when you were fresh out of high school and he was working on Heights at an acting seminar in the city. You never lost contact and became fast friends despite the age difference. Eventually you befriended his wife Vanessa and the two of you meet every Saturday for a little shopping trip.

     “I’m just kidding, (Y/N). I’m proud of you. You’ve come all this way from that little 18 year old dreamer. Look how well you did in Hamilton.”

 Yes, it’s true. Everyone’s other dream: to be in the new hit musical. As a part of the original cast ensemble, you got to sing and dance onstage every night beside your closest friends. You and Jasmine became almost attached at the hip as soon as rehearsals began. When she and Anthony began dating, the two of you became close as well. Let’s not forget the most important relationship: You and Daveed. The two of you had been crushing on each other and flirting since the beginning. “If you don’t snatch him up soon, I will.” Jasmine used to tease you. “Jaz, you have a boyfriend!” You would reply. He finally gathered up the courage to ask you out last summer and the two of you have been going strong ever since. Even after almost a year, the two of you were still on cloud nine.

“C’mon Lin, don’t tease the poor girl. Can’t you seen she’s nervous?” Daveed said, walking into your dressing room with a smirk on his face.

“Baby, I’m not nervous. Just, well, okay maybe I am a bit nervous. I mean who wouldn’t be. Playing Elphie is an honor.” You replied shakingly.

“I have full confidence in you, (Y/N/N). You’re going to go out on that stage and kill it. Defy gravity. No pun intended.” Daveed affirmed, embracing you in his arms, careful not to smudge any green.

“I second that!” Lin piped in, “Or V and I wouldn’t have flown all the way from London to see you. You’re gonna do amazing out there.”

“(Y/N)! Get in your place. It’s almost time!. Good Luck!” the stagehand, Ralph, called from outside the door.

“Oh, God I think I’m going to be sick!” You cried, pacing back and forth running your hands along your face.

“Well, geez, you do look a little gree-” “Seriously, Lin?” “Sorry. Good luck, I know you’ll do amazing out there. Show em’ what you’re made of!” He said, running out of the room heading to his seat.

“Hey, Look at me.” Daveed said softly, grabbing your arm pulling you closer to him. Glancing up at him through your eyelashes, you began to listen to what he had to say.

“You’re going to get on that stage, give the best performance of your life, and make the audience go wild at the finale. You’ve worked so hard for this role and you deserve it without a doubt.” With the way he looked right into your eyes, you knew what he said was sincere.

“God dammit, D, you’re gonna make me cry. I can’t have this damn paint smudge!” You answered with a giggle.

“Well, you know me always making the ladies cry.” He winked at you, pointing with finger guns.

“Finger guns, really?” You said with crossed arms and a smile on your face.

“Oh come on you know you love em’!” Daveed said on his way out of the room. While he was walking out, another just happened to walk in.

“Aaron!” You exclaimed. Aaron Tveit. The man of everyone’s dreams. Tall build, blonde hair, gleaming eyes, and a killer smile. As the two of you began to talk, you didn’t notice the slight scowl on your boyfriends face as he left the room.

Harry styles is one of the most humble celebrities and an absolutely phenomenal  singer.


There’s a reason why harry styles is loved by so many ( who admire him ) and also hated upon by a few ( who’re clearly jealous of him ) Go and see any interview of harry styles and you’ll end up smiling due to his adorableness and absolutely cute tactics. Nope,you won’t find any arrogance there. Generally,you see an inflated ego in a hell lot of celebrities and harry could have it too- considering he was the member of the biggest boy band in the world and now is clearly an admirable popstar/Rockstar.

But there’s a difference between those other celebrities and harry, he started from humble beginnings(working as a baker)Even after suddenly getting fame in X factor , he never changed. He remained the same harry that he was 7 years ago ( He just went on becoming more and more handsome with each passing year tho )

He is charming but not egoistic about it.  Even though he has been labeled as the “serial dater”, the “manwhore” , “womanizer” by the media , there’s this childlike innocence of the 16 year old harry still present in him and unfortunately, the media fails to recognize it- being too busy linking him with several models.

Another thing that I love about him is that he doesn’t discuss about his personal life is too much. There’s always speculation about it but rarely are their proper evidences to prove certain media reports. He has nothing but good words for his exes , no matter how much the journalists try to twist the questions so as to make him utter something wrong, something cruel but to their disappointment, that never happens.  That makes him one of the most humble celebrities out there. Despite being brutally scrutinized by the media or for that matter, a few songs by an ex– he has nothing but kind words to say and he has my respect for that.

Changing the direction of your career ( YES I SAID THAT HAH ) in a road less travelled should be applauded. I mean how many “member of the boyband” turned “solo singer” turn into the kind of artistry which might not give them a no.1 song playing on repeat in endless pop stations. In my opinion , as far as current times of popular artists are concerned, only  beyonce does that. Now harry took that as a challenge and created an album full of songs that are not convenient for a smashing no.1 but are still unforgettable. Listen to “Sign of the times” – the epic most talked about ballad from his debut album, it is not a no.1 song on the billboard hot 100 the way “despacito” is,but is still more relevant and beautiful.

Look at “Kiwi” – full of humerous lyrics or for that matter “woman”- the inescapable la la la la la la la la.
The raw, vulnerable and ugly ( figuratively) yet oh so beautiful “From the dining table” , the haunting vocals of “Meet me in the hallway” , the beautiful lyrics of “sweet creature” , the truly old-school “Ever since new York”, the somber piano tune turned  rock “Only angel”, the phenomenally kind of passionate/seductive “Carolina” with the repeated “SHE’S SUCH A GOOD GIRL”  and “SHE FEELS SO GOOD”,  the honest “ two ghosts” – every single song has a different tone exploring varied vocals and different sounds.  

Harry has really created a tapestry of self. He is creating his own narrative rather than doing what everyone does. Taking a kind of risk like this and then getting success in it is the best thing about all of this. There has been so much pressure on him to deliver a smashing album but more than delivering a hit album do you realize what he did ? He created a masterpiece for a debut solo album.  Years later , we will have so many harry solo singles to dwell upon but we still won’t forget the impact “Sign of the times” left on us in its wake and that is why he is an absolutely phenomenal singer.



Random thoughts on Bungou Stray Dogs

Ok so as some of you have noticed, I’ve just binge watched the two seasons of BSD and I feel the urge to scream a little:

  • THIS ANIME IS A MASTERPIECE. Like, truly, it’s one of the best anime I’ve ever seen, it went straight into my all time faves anime top 5 for sure
  • The art style is amazing, completely different from all the other anime I’ve seen. Not to mention the character designs. They are one more stunning than the other.
  • The soundtrack. Like, wow. The songs of the OP/ED are dope, I can’t stop singing them. Also I loved the use of those specific songs in particular moment of the anime, it added even more epicness to the scenes 
  • Not to mention the animation of especially the closing titles. They are incredibly suggestive. 
  • I come from NGE which is quite frankly the most philosophically elaborated anime ever created, but BSD too is filled with cultural reference that are (gladly) easy to grasp. I’m still in awe thinking about how much thought the team has put into assembling all of that. Really. Amazing. It educated me on so many levels.
  • The plot is incredible, it has lots on unexpected twists. I got nervous, I was shocked, I laughed, I screamed, I was hurt (DAMN IT EPISODE 4), I squealed, I cried (like, A LOT)..it has everything an adult audience is searching for. 
  • It has the kind of characters that stay with you forever and, Agency or Mafia, you end up loving them all. It’s sort of a Karasuno vs Aoba Johsai dynamic. You…really can’t decide a side to pick. You know it should be the Agency but ???  
  • Yes, you’ll end up adopting a whole Armed Detective Agency (Kenjiiiiiii!!!!!) and a whole bunch of Mafia Executives, I’m warning you. Make some room for your new sons. 
  • I’m hopelessly, desperately, in love with Edogawa Ranpo. 
  • If you are a fan of the Darry dynamic, I’m gonna give just two names: Atsushi and Akutagawa. BYE. 
  • “Why are you here?” “To kill you” he says 5 minutes before using Rashomon to save his life (all of this while screaming JINKO with a voice almost choked by tears). 
  • “Die, Jinko!” he says, as he wraps Rashomon around his arms to make Atsushi’s fist deadly enough to win against their strongest enemy.
  • Ok then. 
  • And they’re supposed to be enemies. Like Mafia vs Agency and stuff. 
  • Yes, I’m a huge Shin Soukoko trash. 
  • CHUUYA. CHUUYA. CHUUYA.
  • Frigging quote of the year: “I’m familiar with your attacks, your timing, your thrusts”. *softly but with a lot of feeling* …what the fuck
  • As you can see, the otp game is strong here
  • If you’re a fan of enemies to lovers dynamic, Chuuya and Dazai are your boys. 
  • Yes, I ship Soukoko hard like…really hard. They are like an old married couple with their two little sons who are 100 times more mature than the two of them combined. I LIVE. 
  • Listen I could stay here and list all the reasons why you should watch BSD…but just do like I did, take a leap of faith, you won’t regret it, I promise. 
Nature Boy & David

So, the trailer music for Alien: Covenant was a rendition of Nat King Cole’s amazing song “Nature Boy”, and given the themes of the movie it’s 200% clear that the song is being used in this context to refer to David. A lot of people are latching on to the “A very strange enchanted boy/They say he wandered very far, very far/Over land and sea” lines, which is totally understandable because, well, David was weird and he went walkabouts between worlds.

For me, though, the more important lines are later in the song: 

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved in return

David grew up in a clinical, hostile and, dare I say it, pretentious as fuck environment. (Seriously can you imagine Peter Weyland just chillin’ out with a beer and watching Space Brooklyn Nine Nine Year 3000? Nope, me either). Weyland called him ‘son’ but treated him like a slave. His ‘sister’, Vickers, clearly despised every single atom of his being (understandably so, seeing as she was usurped as Weyland’s true heir by something she clearly views as just being a machine). Whilst the unnamed scientists/pilots/crew of the Prometheus expedition are pretty ambivalent towards him, and we can assume this is the same attitude he encountered wherever he and Weyland went considering how he melts into the background during the Vickers/Holloway/Shaw scene. 

The only two people who have a strong emotional connection to David in the film are Holloway, who either despises David specifically or synthetics in general, and Shaw, who is willing to treat him like a sentient being despite his being a robot. (And, I stress here, she doesn’t even do that much. She just thanks him for saving her and holds several conversations with him. That’s it). 

I’m 100% of the belief David specifically chose Holloway to experiment on because of how much of a dickhead he was towards him (think about it, David had a lot of clearly expandable security personnel lounging around but instead he picks one of the two people who actually discovered LV-223 and has the archeological knowledge to decode the place), which means that even before going a little nuts David is fully capable of making decisions based purely on raw emotion.

So far, so gravy. 

But then we have Shaw. I’m as much of a Shipper on Deck for Shaw and David as the next Shipper on Deck for Shaw and David, buuuuut I sat down and rewatched the film yesterday and…yikes. David is not super nice to Shaw. Like, at all. The only time he shows a little tenderness towards her that isn’t downright creepy is after his head has already been ripped off and he warns her of the Engineer’s imminent arrival. During the rest of the film, he:

• Looks incredibly pissed off when she asks him politely not to touch anything and glares at her like a child throwing a tantrum (“sorrrrreeeee”, lip curl)
• Strips her of her crucifix in order to make her more vulnerable mere moments after she watched her boyfriend get burned to death
• Doesn’t attempt to comfort her when she finds out she’s been impregnated by the pathogen
• Taunts her over the abortion she then has to go through in order to remove the squid thingy (“I didn’t think you had it in you” listen u fkn lil shit) 
• Then teases her about her faith and her dead father, even though by watching her dreams he knew how much both mean to her 

Which brings me back around to the Nature Boy lyrics: David never learned how to love. This isn’t a programming limitation, considering Walter’s familiar with the concept, but rather a plain ol’ simple how could he? His only frames of reference are a father who treats him like a servant, a sister who hates him and would kill him in a heartbeat if she could, and somebody else’s misinterpreted childhood memories. He doesn’t know how to be kind. He doesn’t know how to be compassionate. He doesn’t know how to truly care for someone.

All of which manifests in his behaviour and attitude in Alien: Covenant. The more I think about it, the more I think David has tricked himself into believing he was in love with Shaw and, being well-versed in all things pretentious as fuck (see above) knows how to talk about her as though he were in love with her, all without feeling the actual emotion behind his words or actions. He may have convinced himself that he turned her into the first Alien Queen to help her overcome her inability to create life; he may have convinced himself he acted selflessly (whilst, absurdly, also acting selfishly); he may have convinced himself that he’s a tragic figure straight out of Shakespeare who can quote epic lines whilst looking properly moody…but, in reality, he’s actually more artificial than the brother he claims to be superior to.

Walter may not have learned how to love, but he sees it, understands it, and cherishes it in others. I mean of course he does: since activation he’s been surrounded by a crew composed entirely of couples who are striking out together on an epic voyage to found a romantic far-flung colony amongst the stars. People who treat him as one of them, trust him with their jokes and their secrets and their fears and their dreams. 

David wasn’t. David was surrounded by coldness and harshness and bitterness and strife. David never learned how to love. And he sure as hell didn’t learn how to be loved in return, seeing as not a single soul he ever encountered actually loved him at all.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #186 - The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

I nominated the recap for the first Princess Diaries to @princessofsunnydale because she nominated it for my (Re)Watch so I thought I’d do the same for this post. Thanks!

1) I think it was a wildly smart decision to move the setting of this film from San Francisco to Mia’s often spoke of but rarely seen dominion of Genovia. It’s an organic next step to her story. We saw her learn how to be a princess in San Fran, now we see how she actually adapts to her home country (which is a lively character in its own right). The decision to jump ahead five years ahead instead of three (the number of years between releases) I think also is nice. Mia is more comfortable in the agency she gained in the first film, the relationship with her beau Michael is not hanging over her head, it just allows the film to not be dogged down by some plot points from the first film.

2) Sir Fat Louie? Did they knight him? Can you knight a cat?

3) I didn’t remember this line before I put in the movie but I do now.

There is a strong initial chemistry Pine has with lead actress Hathaway, allowing the audience to grow invested in their relationship quickly. Even/especially when they’re not getting long, you can just fell the sexual chemistry in the air between them. It’s fun, making the film stronger because of it.

Chris Pine on his own is as charismatic and interesting as ever. In lesser hands the character of Nicholas could be an even bigger jerk and while there are antagonistic qualities to him the audience UNDERSTANDS his motivations. He is trying to honor what he believes his dead father wanted, he believes he’s trying to do what’s best for Genovia. And when he sees he was mistaken, he tries to step aside. There’s a nice honesty to Pine’s performance. He doesn’t play Nicholas as an over the top mustache twirling villain. All in all, Pine does a fine job in this film and helps support it.

6) Except for one black guy, Genovia’s parliament is made up of all white guys saying they don’t want a woman to rule unless she has a man by her side.

The law is severely sexist and antiquated. One of the members of parliament claims it should be respected because it is 300 years old. Saying a law is that old is not an effective argument for it as much as it is AGAINST it. 300 years ago in 2004 that’s 1704. That’s slavery, that’s a fundamental lack of women’s rights across most countries. Don’t use the fact a law is old to argue for it. Laws should evolve as the world does.

7) John Rhys Davies is a wonderful character actor who plays Nicholas’ uncle as a holier than thou elitist arrogant jerk. I love to hate him in this, but I might need to watch Lord of the Rings or Raiders of the Lost Ark next to balance out my feelings.

9) The last film was largely about Clarisse putting her duty as queen aside to be Mia’s grandmother, a relationship which is as strong in this film as ever.

Clarisse [after Mia stomped on Nicholas’ foot]: “As a grandma I say right on.”

10) Like the first film, this movie’s biggest flaw is definitely pacing. Many scenes serve no purpose for the larger plot and instead distract from the main conflict. But - like with the first film - these scenes are also some of the most memorable. So…I’m not sure what to say then. I’m just going to move on.

11) I dig this.

Matarazzo is a continued treat in this film as she was in the first, stealing a number of scenes and infusing some quality humor into the plot. The way she mixes with Genovian life and culture can lead to some nice fish out of water observations, and Matarazzo plays the role with as much commitment and heart as she did in the first film. God bless Lily.

12) The bachelor selection scene is - by far - one of my favorite moments in the film. It is directly related to the plot and has an incredible amount of humor to it. Also, it’s not nearly as long as I remember.

I mean it’s small, but I appreciate that both this film and its predecessor acknowledge the LGBTQIA+ community more than other Disney films did at the time.

13) Callum Blue as Andrew Jacoby.

Much like Michael from the first film, Andrew is able to be a good guy while avoiding the trope of Nice Guy™. There is a respect he has for Mia, an understanding and a fondness. They clearly have a connection and appreciate each other’s company, but it is clear that neither of them love each other. And Andrew does not force this on Mia. He’s pretty much at her service, ready to respect her wishes without being a total pushover. He’s a good guy, someone who could have easily been a jerk or a bully but the fact Mia could plausibly end up with him just ups the stakes.

14) The fan scene is a nice moment of chemistry between Hathaway and Andrews, which (much like in the preceding film) is one of the strongest elements of this movie.

this film one of those moments is when she is reduced to tears because John Rhys Davies spooked her horse and revealed that - SHOCKER - women actually prefer to not ride side saddle. I suppose it’s better that she’s too hard on herself than not hard enough though, as she will be queen.

18) Okay, Nicholas is being creepy with Mia at the fountain. Yes, they kiss. But then she says no to him. Multiple times, too. Yet he keeps groping at her and chasing her around the fountain until they both fall in. And MIA’S in trouble?

19) The parade.

By far the strongest moment in the film. It shows off not only the agency Mia gained in the first film (she has the confidence to stop a parade), but also her incredible heart. She shows off such kindness and care for the people of Genovia, accepts her role as a leader, and is able to create a positive change through the sheer depth of her heart. Also, little Abigail Breslin is very cute.

20) Holy crap, Paul Williams is in this movie.

21) The bridal slumber party is another scene which doesn’t really add to the plot and it goes a little long. BUT - again - it is wildly memorable. Especially seeing Julie Andrews surf on a mattress after giving a wink to her most iconic character.

Julie Andrews underwent surgery in 1997 to treat what she referred to as a muscular striation on her vocal cords. She emerged from the surgery with permanent damage that hurt her singing voice and gave a rasp to her speaking voice (for which she sued the hospital for malpractice two years later). Julie Andrews basically lost her singing voice. Her song “Your Crowning Glory” was the first time she sang on screen since the surgery. Although it was set in a limited range to accommodate her voice, she was reported to have nailed it on the first take and brought tears to the eyes of crew members on set. Raven Symoné - who duets with Andrews on the song - was so moved when she told she’d be singing with the legend that she too was reportedly brought to tears. If for no other reason, I am grateful this movie exists for all of that.

23) Nicholas is very ready to step aside and let Mia rule.

I love that. I love that he’s true to his beliefs about doing what’s right for Genovia, NOT himself.

All humor aside, as I understand it Stan Lee will cameo in any movie asked as long as he gets his standard fee. I think he wants to have the record for most cameos ever.

29) Much like the first film, it is Mia who must take her own fate in her hands. She’s the one who argues against the marriage law, she’s the one who convinces the people and parliament to strike it down (although the Prime Minister is again incredibly supportive and I love that). It’s her taking charge of her life, which I think is absolutely great.

Like the first film, The Princess Diaries 2 held up surprisingly better than I was expecting. Obviously it’s aimed at a younger audience than me but it was pretty enjoyable. Anne Hathaway is strong as ever, as is Julie Andrews, while Chris Pine is a welcome and fitting addition to the cast. The themes are nicely feminist as is the ending. Overall I just find it an enjoyable film worth the watch.

Nightmare

The next request on the lineup is another for the lovely @decaf-for-cutie and comes from a long string of conversation that we have had about the ever adorable Big King, Tiny King AU! (Is it an AU? It’s as canon as canon gets in my opinion lololol). 

Also, a word on my headcanons for Link’s mutism: so, if you guys ever read the one shots I’ve done on Ao3 that go with Sidon’s Epic Pining Adventure but were written before some of the more recent chapters, you will find that there are some differences between the two (and the drabbles relating to the series from this weekend). I’ll go back and make the appropriate changes on a later date but my biggest explanation for those differences (ie how I handle Link and his speaking) have changed as I’ve gotten a better handle on the characters. 

The way I see it is, for Link to talk easily and freely is a very rare occurrence, even in the comfort of his own home. But part of what Decaf and I were gushing about was the idea of Link getting so comfortable with Sidon that, in certain settings, he is able to talk unrestricted. It only really happens in certain settings (like if if he distressed or pissed and he’s spouting out curse words right and left, or if Sidon is upset and he’s trying to calm him, or if the two are getting ready for bed and just enjoying the quiet of the evening. But they’re usually very specific instances). The rest of the time, Link is signing and giving one or two word phrases to communicate. 

But for this drabble, Link finds himself in one of those instances where he’s free to speak as he pleases~ 


Sidon woke with a start, sitting up suddenly, gasping for air.

He hadn’t realized that he had screamed as he awoke, nor did he realize that he was crying until Link’s body followed him, wrapping small yet strong arms around his waist and hushing him gently. 

“Shhh, it’s okay,” Link whispered, rubbing his back. Sidon heaved, trying to level his breathing but to no avail. The dream had been so real, so…so possible to come true, even now as he surveyed his surroundings and found himself in Hateno within the comfort of Link’s home.
