What to do when you really don’t want to study.

I think we’ve all been there - the class is important and you know you need to study but when you sit down you end up feeling grOSS AND YOU don’t want to. So here are some tips to overcoming that:

 Take a deep breath and reevaluate why you need to study. Try to stay positive.

  • When I’m not motivated I keep saying things like “what if I just don’t do it?” And then - surprise! - I end up not studying and suffer/regret it later. When coming up with reasons to study, try to keep it positive. Don’t say things like “if I don’t study I’ll fail the class.” Instead, say things like “if I study, I have a better chance at doing well on the exam. Future-me will be so proud of current-me.”
  • If you truly cannot find a single reason to study, set your studying aside for later and do another productive activity or take a long break.

Drill it into your mind that you really don’t need motivation to do well.

  • Even if you find the reason to study, that doesn’t necessarily mean you are very motivated. Sometimes we feel like no motivation = unable to study. This isn’t true.
  • Make a deal with yourself. Try studying for ten minutes. And actually try to study. If by the end of ten minutes you feel like you can continue studying, great! Keep going! If not, then you can take a break and do something else.

Choose a study scheduling method that works for you.

  • Some people feel great studying for hours on end once they get in "the zone.” Others feel the need to take quick breaks every half hour. Studying and scheduling methods are different for everybody! Play around with scheduling to find out what works for you.
  • In high-stress times, work (studying, assignments, etc.) can feel pretty overwhelming. To organize all the stuff you have to do, write it down! This takes some of the stress of remembering tasks off from your brain, so that your brain can focus on the more crucial things.
    • If you’re making a to-do list, keep the general list short. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed by too many tasks. (You can keep sub-lists on separate paper/sticky notes to break down each task.)
    • If you’re making a time-table, keep your schedule loose. Give yourself buffer time to complete each task, just in case you overestimated your efficiency.
    • It’s totally okay to overestimate efficiency! - ifyou do, you learn more about yourself and how you study best.

Small (pomodoro) breaks

  • Pomodoro technique in a nutshell: 25 minute blocks of working with 5 minute breaks in between. Feel free to change the length of the blocks according to your preferences! During your breaks, you can
    • Get more water
    • Get snacks
    • Make tea/coffee
    • Stretch
    • Do a tiny bit of yoga
    • Walk around the room/building
    • Stretch
    • Five-minute meditation
    • Head massage
  • Try to avoid looking at a screen. When you look at a screen, you stimulate your brain and it won’t get its rest. Also, the internet might suck you in and your break could last longer than intended. (cough tumblr)

Long breaks

  • Sometimes I really really really really reALLY don’t want to study. Or do anything. And I feel kind of gross and am on the verge of a mental breakdown. If you feel this way, stop.
  • Take a hella deep breath. And another one. One more. Aaaaand one more just for good measure.
  • Get away from your desk. I associate desk with studying, so getting away from it helps me relax. Lie down on a bed, or move to a different room if you can. If you can get near a window, try looking into the distance to relax your brain and eyes.
  • Breathe for a couple of minutes, then evaluate how you feel. Again, try to stay positive. Instead of “I feel shitty and I don’t want to do anything,” try “I feel tired right now and resting can help me feel better.”
  • Based on this evaluation, estimate the amount of time you need to rest. If you have a lot of studying to do, try to keep it under an hour. Set a timer for the amount of time you have decided on. (remember to include buffer time!) Getting back to work on time can make you feel more productive, which conduct better productivity!
  • During a long break, do an activity that makes you feel good and takes your mind off studying. You can
    • Take a long walk. If you live near a park or a trail, try strolling around in it.
    • Eat healthy food. Junky comfort food can make you feel groggy, especially foods that are fried. Instead, try eating some fruits or nuts.
    • Take a shower/bath
    • Talk with a friend
    • Make some art
    • Enjoy a long coffee break. (avoid caffeine if you feel anxious/panicky, though)
    • Play with a pet
    • Take a power nap
    • Longer meditation/yoga
  • Again, try to avoid looking at screens. Also, avoid thinking about studying. Let yourself have the luxury of NOT THINKING ABOUT STUDYING for a while, so you can return to it with a fresh mind.

Mental health days

  • Sometimes everything is just too much and you might feel the need to stop everything for a day. If so, take a mental health day!
  • Think of mental health days as physical health days. If your body isn’t feeling well, you are allowed to stay in bed and sleep/not do anything for a day. Similarly, if your mind isn’t feeling well, you are also allowed to stay in bed and sleep/not do anything for a day.
  • Let your parents and teachers know that you don’t feel well and can’t go to school. From my experience, most teachers are pretty understanding and will let you have the day off. (You might have some work to make up later, though.)
  • Do not study on mental health days. Don’t even think about studying on mental health days. Instead, just focus on getting better. You can
    • Sleep in
    • Clean your room
    • Take a super long bath, complete with bath bombs and candles
    • Watch a good movie
    • Read a good book
    • Sing your favorite songs really loudly
    • Literally anything that (IS HEALTHY and) makes you feel good about yourself.

Study groups can keep you going, even when you kind of don’t want to

  • Setting up a time (like a date!) can keep you on track
  • Study with someone you trust to keep you accountable. Don’t study with someone you know you’re going to gossip or watch cat videos with.
  • If you really feel the need to cancel a study date, it’s ok! Just like canceling any kind of date, it’s 100% okay to back out if you feel uncomfortable.

My personal way of separating the types

Since the MBTI system has been in place, there’s been the unavoidable “classifications” of the 16 types. The most widely accepted one is the temperaments (NT, NF, SJ, SP) It works, but definitely has its flaws. Like, do ISTJs and ESFJs really have THAT much in common other than being law-abiding citizens guided by stability? If so, then why aren’t INTJs and ENFJs pitted in the same category? My favorite personal way is the “Pi/Pe/Je/Ji-Dom’’ system. I find that the personality types within these groups tend to operate on a day to day basis more similarly and display more similar behavior. For those who never heard of it, it goes something like this: Perceiving dominants (IxxJ, ExxJ, IxxP, ExxP). The judgment functions then become secondary (Thinking and feeling). So I thought I would summarize them each with their own nifty little title. Disclaimer: This is just my opinion, not gospel, so go ahead and criticize.

Pi-Doms (ISTJ, ISFJ, INTJ, INFJ): The soldiers

-Pi-Doms’ name of their game is ’‘stability”. Their Dominant function absorbs information subjectively and constantly wonders what is the safest route to make it through this life. ISxJs will use their personal experience and compare it when faced with anything new, INxJs will analyze what is beneath the surface of what they are seeing and set their sails for the best path accordingly.

- Their auxiliary function becomes their tool in making their way into this world. IxFJs will tap into the social atmosphere and easily fit in society, even helping their fellow men. While IxTJs will look at the world wondering what is objectively the best course of action in making things happen. 

- Their tertiary function is how they make their personal judgement of things. IxFJs will analyze what makes sense to them objectively, while IxTJ will ponder about their inner motivation and what personally matters to them.

-Their inferior function is a danger zone where they feel everything will spiral downward really fast if they tap into it. ISxJs worry that every new event will lead to disaster and have a hard time dealing with the unexpected, whereas INxJs find the real, immediate sensory world to be somewhat unreliable and dangerous.

Pe-Doms (ESFP, ESTP, ENFP, ENTP): The livewires

-Simply put, Pe-Doms are like letting a kid loose at the zoo, amusement park or toy store and telling them they have “carte blanche” for 24 hours. So of course they will try to squeeze in everything they can during that time period, metaphorically pulling on every lever in sight to see what will happen. 

- Their auxiliary function serves as judgement to decide what they put priority in; emotional matters (ESFP, ENFP) or technical matters (ESTP, ENTP).

- Their tertiary function helps them not to get too carried away with things. ESFPs and ENFPs will wonder what is the best logical course of action (Te) while ESTPs and ENTPs will remind themselves that they belong to a social system and other people matter.

- Their inferior function is like a parent nagging at them, in other words, it breaks their fun. For ENTPs and ENFPs Si is like Mom reminding you to take your sweater outside because it’s cold, even if you don’t want to. While ESTPs and ESFPs, have their Ni dads reminding them to check both sides of the street before crossing it. 

Je-Doms (ESTJ, ESFJ, ENTJ, ENFJ):The leaders

- Je-Doms’ first priority is organization, whether it be people or things. They thus, “attack” the world aggressively which can make them overbearing at times, but in reality they are the pillars of this society. They all evaluate what needs to be done effortlessly and make it happen.

- Their auxiliary function serves as to what route they want to make this happen with ESTJs and ESFJs preferring their personal experience and what has been known to work, whereas ENTJs and ENFJs prefer to focus on the unknown and forge a path to safety. 

- Their tertiary function is better known as the “fun” function. It allows them to let loose and throw their cares away, which they desperately need after all this focus on leading. ESTJs and ESFJs will want to explore new interests in life whereas ENTJs and ENFJs will just…..give in to what they want to do now. But in both cases, they did their homework, and most likely deserve it.

-Their inferior function represents a repressed child crying for help. For ESTJs and ENTJs they have to remind themselves what they emotionally want whereas for ESFJs and ENFJs, they have to learn to take a step back and objectively analyze what’s going, disregarding how they feel about it. 

Ji-Doms (ISTP, ISFP, INTP, INFP): The nomads

- Ji-Doms are all about one thing: Their personal needs and expression of said needs. They focus mostly on their individuality regardless if it fits within the social mold. IxFPs judge things on what makes sense to their inner values, and IxTPs judge things on what just……..makes sense, period. 

- Their auxiliary function allows them to express themselves. ISxPs are more visceral and what to experience life first hand on their own terms. They have a tendency towards a “flashy” appearance (i.e. tattoos, latest designer clothes) INxPs however, have a penchant for a more provocative, upbeat appearance (Purple hair? Why not? It’ll get people guessing…)

- Their tertiary function is really interesting. It makes them take pause and ponder about the deeper implication of things (ISxPs) or remember what has always mattered to them (INxPs). In both cases, it serves as a “safety” zone.

- The inferior function is what all Ji-Doms seem to rebel against. IxFPs find that Te is suffocating and destroys their individuality and freedom whereas IxTPs find that Fe forces them into being someone that they are not.

So I got a question about the sparing and padding post that you recently made. I like to read Assassin's Creed fanfictions that shows Altair (the main character) in his early years, which often includes his training to be an assassin. In most of these fics they focus more on the sword and knife fighting but some does include the hand to hand fighting too (without protection). So realistically what kind of injuries would someone training without any kind of protection should expect?

Death.

I’m only sort of kidding, because I know the kinds of fanfics you’re talking about and like every writer trying to be edgy, they have them spar without protections and with live weapons. There’s a reason why we use practice weapons during training and in sparring matches, where rules are in play. 

Now, the Assassin’s Creed variant of the Hashashin live for that super edgy, very stupid state of supposed badass where one must constantly prove their worth so I totally believe they’d do it. I’d also believe this would lead to an incredibly high turnover with their recruits, which is not sustainable in the real world.

I’m going to point out here that the “Asassins” or Hashashin were real. That’s the etymology for the word. The suicide jumping is also real and, instead of landing on bales of hay, they jumped to their deaths. There are a couple of stories about that piece of the order. The real Assassins were religious fanatics. These stories are not so much a testament to the quality of their training so much as their fanaticism.

For what it’s worth, the Knights Templar were also real and a prominent militant order up until they were excommunicated by the Pope.

The history of both groups is actually far more interesting than the Assassin’s Creed franchise. This is a persistent problem with the games, they invariably include historical figures who are far, far, far more interesting, competent, and badass than we’re presented with. If you encounter a historical personage in an Assassin’s Creed game, remind yourself of this simple fact: the real one is about 200x more awesome. It’s this weird inverse where the reality consistently surpasses the fiction. (Black Flag, I have my eye on you. Honestly, how do you mess up Stede Bonnet, The Gentleman Pirate? And that’s the least of your sins!)

The more serious answer is that unless you’re training with weapons or making an active effort to hit each other, in the real world we don’t train using pads on the regular. The pads are so you can essentially go full out against another person under controlled circumstances and then come back for training tomorrow. If your students are constantly getting injured that hampers their ability to train, then they fall behind and you turn out fewer fighters. Injuries on the training floor should not be a common occurrence.

Barring accidents and mishaps, if you’re simply practicing your techniques on your own or against a wooden dummy then all you should expect afterwards is standard muscle pain (maybe some bruising). The same should be true for practice with human opponents (which is not sparring) and sparring itself.

Anything else is a waste of time, energy, and resources.

Remember, injuries take time to heal and if you’re prepping someone to go out and murder that’s time you don’t have.

In the land of “edgy training”, try to remember that you want evil as opposed to incompetence.

The vast majority of training, like the kinds you listed, are edgy incompetence. They don’t serve a purpose other than sadism and your students don’t learn anything. Unfortunately, cruelty on its own doesn’t teach much (the Spartans were abusive jerks, but their methods worked). The beat up, abuse them, cruelty methodology simply doesn’t work unless you understand the kinds that work and, from a storytelling perspective, it also isn’t interesting.

The kind of “edgy training” you see in most stories is a round of Kinder’s First. People mimicking what Hollywood has taught them or what they’ve seen in fiction elsewhere. The assumption in this line of thinking is that the more brutal the training then the more dangerous the fighter. This isn’t true. More importantly, there are much better ways to sadistically mess with your students’ (and audience’s) heads.

1) Depending on your teaching style, you may murder a student on occasion to motivate the others. However, the control over who lives or dies remains with the instructor because the instructor is god. If a student gets a bright idea to kill another student without your approval, kill them.

2) Live weapons should never be used by students on each other except as a graduation gift. The graduation gift being only one of them will be accepted into the Order, so prove your worth. (In the real world, you’ll probably need them both but in fantasy land… why not?)

3) Use the threat of death to keep your students from getting comfortable, make good on this promise every so often. Bring in an established warrior to kill off your best student in demonstration to the others. (Why? It reminds them at no point are they safe.)

4) Encourage your students to break the rules, punish them severely if caught. (Playing favorites? Punish them more, push them harder.)

5) Limit their resources. Make them fight each other for their food. Survival isn’t a given. It’s earned.

6) In the early days, force them into physical exhaustion. Keep them up late. Wake them early. Limit their sleep to the minimum of hours they need to stay functional. Tired minds are easier to manipulate.

7) Force them into direct conflict with each other. There’s never a solid baseline they can achieve, and they’re always watching over their shoulder. Furthermore they never become loyal to each other. They are only loyal to you. Appeasing their teacher is their only means of survival.

8) Got a problem child who won’t play along? Don’t make an example of them. No, no, make them your new favorite. That’ll turn the others on them, and they’ll solve the problem for you.

9) Change the goalposts regularly, so they never know what to expect.

10) You’ve got someone who doesn’t want to participate? Say okay. When others move to join them, punish those students viciously instead. Do it in front of the class and for everyone to see. (This is called: creating heroes and wrecking them.)

11) Have your students inform on each other.

If this is starting to sound like abuse, well.. you’re right. It is. It also very successful in terms of achieving its goal. The goal is attacking the student’s perceptions, beliefs, and their understanding of the world while reshaping them into who you want them to be.

Real cruelty is clever and inventive. It is also patient. Like a good interrogator, this teacher will leave their students so they’re never sure of exactly what the teacher wants or how to please them. They give them hope, then snatch it away. Someone who excels at social manipulation will use this position of power to maneuver their students feelings and their expectations, indirectly point them at certain targets by stoking negative feeling such as jealousy, paranoia, anger, or fear. In the other hand, those rare moments of kindness offered will ensure gratitude. When a good teacher wants their uncooperative students to band together, they make themselves the target the students need to fight against. The abusive teacher does the opposite. They ensure they are the only boat in the storm and turn their charges on each other. They make sure their students never know what to expect. This includes going hot and cold. They change up to batter expectations, handle some problems themselves and let the students handle others.

An experienced teacher will have seen plenty of student characters, all the versions you can imagine. A good one will break the problem kids to bridle without them ever realizing it happened, and they exit the experience more hardcore than the ones who invested themselves honestly. The purpose of “brutal training” isn’t to churn out a better warrior. It’s to break the individual down so you can reshape their mind and ensure the weapon you’ve created is loyal to you. That level of conditioning is very difficult to break. You’ve re-oriented their entire training into status positions they’ve fought for and earned. This training becomes a foundation for their identity, and you’re not going to get it out of them.

So, before invoking the trope, choose wisely and understand the purpose for what it is. Actively abusive training is done with the express intent to recondition and brainwash. More than that, in competent hands, it’ll snap the “rebellious teenage hero” contingent like twigs.

As a member of a fanatical cult, Altair is a direct example of this sort of training writ large.

Have you seen the bold type do you recommend it?

Why I recommend The Bold Type

I know that a bunch of people have written posts like this, but here’s my iteration, which comes from a place of: 1. Love, 2. being the exact target audience, and 3. watching too many TV shows that don’t give me what I want. The Bold Type, as it turns out, is all about going after what you want. It is about rejecting the societal standard that tells women to become meek in the workplace and, instead, use that standard as a bar over which you can raise yourself and become even better. The Bold Type is along the same vein as the short-lived MTV show Sweet/Vicious— feminism for women, to entertain women, to show women in lights that we are interested in seeing. I think that the success of this show could cause a boom of similar shows— sleek, modern, female-centric. Watching The Bold Type isn’t just about The Bold Type. It’s about supporting the content that we want to see.

There are three main characters— Jane, Kat, and Sutton. All are best friends. All are in different places in their careers. All are successful in their own right. And all work at the fabled Scarlet Magazine, a magazine written by women for women to be their saucy older sister, guiding them through life. Instead of 50 Ways To Please Your Man, it’s 50 Ways To Please Yourself. Instead of Lipsmackers That Will Stay On While You’re Lipsmacking it’s Lipsmackers That Will Stay On While You Take On The World. Their boss, Jacqueline (we’ll get to her later; she’s my favorite character) refers to this as “self-feminism.” Other people are important, absolutely, but make sure you’re taking care of yourself and your needs too when it comes to work, relationships, and sex. Scarlet Magazine is about real women who are motivated, who are struggling, who are successful, who are scared, who are human. It’s a publication that I, personally, would love to read.

Jane works for the writing department. She is a young writer who is thirsty to prove herself, but is also conscious of the fact that she’s low on the totem pole. The pilot begins on her first day as a writer, when you find out that Jane is a smart, capable, confident young woman who was raised on Scarlet Magazine. This is her dream job. She’s organized, thoughtful, and resilient. Although she tends to complain about her assignments, she always comes through and makes them her own.

Kat works in social media— in fact, she’s the head of her department. She tends to see the world through the lens of her camera even when she isn’t working. Kat, by nature of her position, is always on-call. She sees what is beautiful about the world and what is beautiful about people. She also knows, with great clarity, what is important to her, and always fights for these issues— perhaps a little relentlessly. Kat excels at her job, but she doesn’t excel at relationships. She likes “casual,” preferring to have flings. When she meets Adena, a beautiful Muslim lesbian, her idea of relationships and her sexual identity goes out the window. I am looking forward to seeing Kat and Adena’s relationship evolve just as any ol’ heterosexual relationship on television would— full of ups and downs, but also full of love, sex, and moments that just make you hold your breath. Luckily, these two ladies already serving a full course meal.

Sutton is the final female in our group of girls. Undoubtedly the lowest of the three girls on the corporate ladder, Sutton’s reason for that is simple: she didn’t have the socioeconomic privilege that Kat and Jane had been lucky to have, and got off to a more disadvantaged start. Sutton had fought her way to her position tooth-and-nail. And, better yet, she’s damn good at her job. Sutton is the most tenacious character on the show. She’s spent years fighting for herself, and she isn’t about to stop now. The romantic plot-line revolving around Sutton involves her dating a superior in the company, which is normally a story arc that might make me cringe, but Sutton is 25 and Richard is probably in his late-20s, early-30s. There’s lots of respect between the two of them, and their relationship isn’t a conflict of interest because Richard works for the legal department for the company that owns Scarlet. This relationship is adorable, sexy, and Sutton absolutely holds the power in it, meaning that we, as audience members, can root for these two.

The Bold Type shows female friendships exactly the way I know them to be. They love and support each other. They overshare. They talk over each other. They play and tease. They make cultural references in a speedy fashion that temporarily makes you think you’re watching Gilmore Girls. They get selfish. They apologize for being selfish. They fight and make up. They change the direction of their conversations constantly, flashing from topic to topic like strobe lights, showcasing how incredible women are at multi-tasking. It’s the dream female friendship that all of us are desperate for on TV, and no romantic sub-plot is going to tear that down. It’s like Friends without the guys, and as much as I love Chandler, with a show like The Bold Type, I think we can live without him.

Perhaps the best character on The Bold Type is the girls’ boss, Jacqueline. She is the head of Scarlet Magazine; the leader who knows what she wants and knows how to get it. As fearless as she is, she is not to be feared. Jacqueline may be respected, admired, and adhered to by her staff, but if you’re looking for Miranda Priestly, you won’t find her here. Jacqueline cares about facilitating the careers of her employees. She rules her disciples with a firm but fair hand, often giving them more than they deserve. Life is hard, especially for women in the corporate world, and Jacqueline understands that. Her character’s scenes are always an absolute treat— the ones I look forward to the most when I sit down on the couch to watch The Bold Type with a glass of red wine and a feeling of safety on the side. Because I, as a viewer, have learned in just a few episodes (five, to be exact) that these writers are ones that I can trust. They’re speaking using my voice, the voice of my friends, the voice of my peers, the voice of my generation.

Turning your television on to The Bold Type means hearing women discussing issues that are relevant to you. It means being inspired by their tenacity and individual power. It means enjoying an episode full of sumptuous fashion, invigorating music, and a bustling city life. The Bold Type is a show that you can turn on and see yourself reflected in your TV screen— whether it’s your sexual identity, your racial identity, or the personality traits that make you who you are. It’s not that The Bold Type never utilizes tropes, cliches, or predictability. It’s that they do it differently, they do it better, they do it while conscious of what it is and what their show is.  

The Bold Type doesn’t necessarily preach that you a required to live your life boldly. The lesson to learn here is much simpler than that: live. Simply go out and live your life, get what you want, make yourself happy. Stay safe, stay kind, stay supportive, stay healthy, stay loving each other. Perhaps Jacqueline describes this mentality best in her speech in the pilot episode of the show. She says, “I expect you to have adventures. I expect you to fall in love. To get your hearts broken. I expect you to have sex with the wrong people; have sex with the right people. To make mistakes and make amends, take a leap and make a splash. And I expect you to unleash holy hell on anybody who tries to hold you back.”

So you heard her. Let’s go unleash holy hell, ladies.

Advice for INFPs

First of all, i’m very disorganized in literally everything. I have to literally force myself to do some organizing. Maybe it’s due to laziness, but I’ve really tried to be organized and the longest period that held was 5 days! Also, I’m very inconsistent when it comes to projects. For examples, one day i can be very passionate and a force of nature, my Te is high and i get shit done, but the next day, I’m like “okay, next”. This pisses me off so much. Because though i have tried a lot of things in my life so far and i have a little experience and a general knowledge of almost everything, it’s like i can’t focus on something for more than a week. And i have chatted with a lot of INFPs in other forums and they have a similar problem too. Why does this happen? Why are we messy and just bouncing from project to project? And do you have any advice on how to stay focused on something and be a little bit more structured?

It’s a lack of strong Te in your type, which makes it hard to focus / commit or stick to something for a long-term result. Since it’s at the bottom of your stack, all the higher functions run right over it – especially Ne, which is what is causing you to shift focus so often, lose interest in things, and pursue whatever captures your immediate attention. While you do not want to ‘hamper’ Ne by trying to shut it off (which can only lead to imbalance problems), here’s a few things that can help get you started in your personal life (career-wise, you really have no choice but to finish what you start, if you want to keep your job):

Learn to take on smaller projects. Let’s say you want to write a novel, but can never get past chapter three. Start by writing short stories. Learn to finish those before you move on to something else. Then try writing longer stories. Build up, project wise, by allowing yourself the liberty to commit to things for only a few days at a time. You set too many long-term goals, you’ll get frustrated and feel trapped. Don’t do it. Work up to it.

Set yourself small goals within larger ones. You want to get that art project finished? Great. You’ll do it for 20 minutes, the next 6 days in a row. Or you will do this part of it by the end of the week, then another part of it. Break it down into steps. Which order does it need done in? How long should you allow yourself to do it?

Set yourself semi-quick goals. Perceiving types do their best work under the proverbial gun, so give yourself a reasonable goal but one that also crunches you a little bit. You’ll have less time to procrastinate and get distracted if it’s do or die, finish this by midnight or fail to live up to my goal.

Keep variety in your life. Focusing intently on something is going to use your Si/Te more than you would on an ordinary day, so cut your Ne a break and give yourself down time / other things to do / think about while you work on that project.

Decide you’re going to stick to it, and then stick to it. You control your life. You choose whether to keep going or give up. It’s on you. If you want to finish this project, decide to finish it. When you feel like doing something else, or abandoning it, remind yourself that you said you’d finish it. And set yourself up a hell of a reward FOR finishing it.

You want something neat? Promise yourself you’ll buy it as a reward to self-congratulate yourself when you finish whatever it is you’re working on. Maybe it’s not a new toy or a movie you love, but it’s being able to do or watch or read something as a reward. Remind yourself, over and over, that you are getting a REWARD. Do not think of it in terms of “I cannot have this until…” but think of it in terms of “When I finish this, I get…”

(Example: “I love Wonder Woman. I’m going to buy it for myself once I learn how to read notes for my guitar!” or “… I’m going to buy it for myself when I finish this writing project!”)

See, you need to find something to work toward, beyond “finishing this.” “Finishing this” is not enough of a motivator to get you out of bed in the morning. No, it’s whatever you want that comes with finishing it that keeps you going. Work: “I go to work, I do this, I get paid.” $$ keeps you going. For me, writing novel: “I get this draft done, then comes the fun part of sculpting it into a better book!” And then, “Now I get to design an awesome cover!” And then, “Now people get to read it, and I can sell copies! And I GET TO WRITE SOMETHING NEW!!!!” *cue massive excitement*

Self-discipline almost always fails, but a system of personal rewards for finishing things is a good self-motivator. Always, ALWAYS give yourself something in the future to look forward to, regardless of type. It helps with depression. It helps with procrastination. It helps with motivation. You need to always be working toward something that is not abstract, but tangible. Something you can feel, touch, use, treasure, enjoy.

So… “I want to learn guitar.” Why? So you can play the guitar? Great! That’s not a good enough motivator. “So I can join a band”? Better. “So I can hang out and make music with my friends”? Better. Better yet, have all those motives and a nice fat reward to go along with it: “Once I learn this song set, I’m buying myself tickets to [insert concert of choice here]” or, on a smaller level, “I’m getting [insert favorite group here]’s new CD!”

Treat yourself like you’d treat anyone else if you were trying to get them to commit to something: they expect to get something good out of it. So do you. And MAKE SURE YOU GIVE YOURSELF THE REWARD. None of this, “I did it! Eh, I don’t really need that ______” nonsense. You worked for it. You earned it. You want to keep being self-motivated. So reward yourself.

(What to use as a reward: anything you like, from your favorite candy bar to more expensive items. I like to make dessert once my work week is over, and the magazine is at the press, because damn it, for working straight an entire week and not having much energy for my creative projects, I earned it.)

PS: Work/reward tactics work for most types, so any variation of the above can probably help self-motivate most of the types into action, if they lack drive.

The Dominators were defeated, the presidential honors were given, the celebratory party was winding down, and Earth-1 was saved. The only thing left to do was to say your goodbyes and go your separate ways.

Over the last few days, you had become good friends with Supergirl, or Kara Danvers as it was. At the party, she had mentioned how on her Earth it was just her and her cousin defending the planet and how nice it was to have a team. You couldn’t have agreed more. It would be nice to fight crime with others like Team Arrow or the Legends. It would even be nice to have a support group like Team Flash, even if you were the only one in the field.  But you had no one. No friends, no family, no one to rely on other than yourself.

Knowing this, Kara invited you to come back to her world to fight alongside her. Earth-1 had plenty of protectors and you had no reason to stay, so you quickly jumped at the opportunity.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #161 - Star Trek Beyond

1) The preproduction for this film was slightly troubled. JJ Abrams was committed to Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens so co-writer of the first two films Robert Orci signed on as director. He ended up leaving production though, taking his cinematographer with him, and it was a little while before Justin Lin (Fast and the Furious 3 - 6) was hired to replace him. Writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung reportedly wrote the script in a bit of a hurry as they still had a release date to meet. But at the end the film turned out really well, so everything worked out in the end.

2) This film was released during the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.

Having said that, the work done by writers Pegg and Jung as well as Lin’s direction I think help to make the film feel like a balance between old Trek and new Trek. I’ll get into more details on that as I go along.

3) The opening scene.

The opening has an incredible sense of fun and humor to it (with the aliens Kirk is trying to break peace with seemingly gigantic and ending up being the size of a chihuahua) and honestly feels like it could be the concept of an episode for the original “Star Trek” TV show (says the guy who’s never seen an episode of the original series). It establishes some of the lighter/funner tone this film will feature compared to the titular darkness of Into Darkness as well as Kirk’s initial conflict in the film. It is a wonderful beginning.

4) Kirk’s tiredness.

Kirk [after commenting he’s now a year older on his birthday]: “A year older than [my father] got to be. He joined Starfleet because he believed in it. I joined on a dare.”

Bones: “You joined to see if you could live up to him. [Mentions how Kirk has spent all this time trying to be like his dad.] Now you’re wondering what it means to be Jim.”

And it is through the fire of conflict in this film that Kirk will reclaim his identity and who exactly he is.

5) The release of this film was given an unexpected dose of sorrow as actor Anton Yelchin tragically passed away about a month before the film’s release.

There is a scene early in the film where Bones and Kirk drink some Scotch they found in Chekov’s locker. They pour three glasses, the third one being for “absent friends” (as in those we’ve lost who could not be here now). The absent friend I believe was meant to be Kirk’s later father, who the pair are talking about. But in the wake of Anton Yelchin’s passing the scene takes on a much more somber meaning and feels more like a tribute to him. After the film’s release I read on IMDb that the scene was included to pay tribute to Yelchin, but I can no longer find that piece of trivia suggesting it may have been false. Either way, it is impossible to divorce Chekov from that scene or the unintended tribute it pays to the late actor. I’m going to miss seeing you in the movie, Anton.

6) Yorktown.

Yorktown is quite possibly the stand out new element introduced into the film. The space station/outpost/colony/whatever is visually outstanding. Most space stations in film are defined by rigid edges and sharp boundaries but Yorktown is circular. It’s fluid, it’s organic, it moves into and through each other like a planet. Some of the camera tricks and technical aspects used to show off this new location is great. It also has an incredible atmosphere to it which ties directly into the sense of hope this franchise is all about. The air is clean, the sky is bright, multiple alien species are working in unity, and Giacchino’s again excellent score just lifts up the sense of optimism that bleeds through this place. It is a wonderful addition to not only this film but Trek lore as a whole.

7) This film introduces what I believe is Star Trek’s first canon gay character by revealing that John Cho’s Hikaru Sulu is in a partnership with another man.

However, this decision had one person surprisingly against it. Original Sulu actor and LGBT activist George Takei himself. Here is an excerpt from an article covering this in the Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

Takei would take to social media a week later to clarify - but not disavow - his statement.

“I hoped instead that [Star Trek creator] Gene Roddenberry’s original characters and their backgrounds would be respected. How exciting it would be instead if a new hero might be created, whose story could be fleshed out from scratch, rather than reinvented. To me, this would have been even more impactful.”

I personally disagree with Takei. As a film student I can say that there seems to be this strange devotion to the “vision” of something. A decision will or won’t be made based on its support of the “original vision”. The original vision of something is almost totally irrelevant to what something actually is, however. Takei’s statements seem to be largely out of his respect for original creator Gene Rodenberry, which I can understand. But imagine some gay kid today LOVES the Star Trek movies and its characters. That kid is not going to care about Gene Rodenberry’s original vision, he is going to care about what Star Trek is today. I think seeing an already established (and incredibly important character) like Sulu express his sexuality in an open and accepted way is very much in line with what Star Trek is today (and will also have more of an impact on that kid than introducing a new character who they have no emotional investment in, but that’s just my personal belief).

The franchise has transcended Rodenberry or any one person involved. It is about unity (a major theme in this film), diversity, tolerance, and hope. And as long as it respects these core beliefs which make Star Trek what it is than I think it does more than respect Rodenberry’s original vision. It respects Star Trek.

8) I am going to talk about Spock and Uhura’s breakup and Spock Prime’s death, I promise. Just later.

9) Even though JJ Abrams did NOT direct this film, Greg Grunberg is still featured in it!

Grunberg is JJ Abrams’ lucky charm, appearing in almost all his films (notably absent from Star Trek into Darkness) in one form or another. And even though Abrams serves only as producer on this flick Grunberg still gets a part. Yay!

10) I like that Commodore Paris (one of the Starfleet higher ups at Yorktown) takes the time to say this to Kirk:

Commodore Paris: “It isn’t uncommon you know, even for a captain. To want to leave.”

It’s a common problem people have in life, the loss of identity. And of course it makes sense that it happens to Starfleet officers. Nothing is defined in space. It’s just space.

11) The skirmish between Kraal’s crew and the Enterprise is great.

As a way of introducing the primary plot into the film, it shows a clear lack of preparedness on the part of the Enterprise crew which is a great place to start the conflict and move forward. A, “started from the bottom,” type way. The film opening with such a heavy thrashing and the destruction of the Enterprise leaves a strong impact on the audience. You know these bad guys are people you do not want to mess with, you don’t even want to be in the same room as them. They just took down one of the best starships ever in a matter of minutes. The scene features great action, nice surprises, and is incredibly well paced. As the first major action set piece for the film, it is truly great.

Kirk: “Abandon ship, Mr. Sulu.”

There is literally NO question from Sulu and only a the hesitation needed to process that request. He doesn’t even say, “Sir?” There’s no doubt in his mind. That is how much he trusts his captain and that is how well he knows his ship to admit when it’s done.

13) Idris Elba as Krall.

I will forever be upset that Suicide Squad won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling when this film is PACKED with some of the most amazing practical creatures and aliens I have seen in years. You don’t have to look any further than Krall to see that. Idris Elba is not giving an animated performance, he’s not motion capture (not to knock motion capture actors, they’re some of the most under appreciated geniuses in Hollywood). That’s him. He is able to deliver a menacing and powerful performance through strong physicality. Elba does not play Krall as human and he shouldn’t. A huge factor for the character is that he’s lost his humanity. He is a beastly shade of his former self, motivated only by madness. I think Krall may be the best villain of this new trilogy (although it’s hard for me to be objective because Nero is still my favorite). Honestly, Elba freaking kills it as Krall and I don’t think they could have cast anyone to do a better job.

From a writing standpoint, Krall just gets more and more interesting as the film goes on.

Krall [after Uhura claims he has made an act of war against the federation]: “Federation act of war!”

But more on this later.

14) This film benefits from unique groupings for a good part of the film. Bones/Spock are the most prominent, but it’s not often you get to see Kirk and Chekov interact one-on-one or Uhura and Sulu. But for now, let’s talk about Bones & Spock.

I don’t think Bones and Spock get as much one on one time as they do in this film and I am so grateful for that. It provides a unique examination of their usually humorously tense interactions which was touched upon in The Search for Spock. I’ll discuss this more as I go (in one scene in particular), but they are able to be vulnerable around each other. Let their guards down, be totally honest, and make their friendship even stronger.

15) Sofia Boutella as Jaylah.

To start, her design is incredibly unique and memorable. It helps her standout from not only the rest of the Enterprise crew but the rest of the inhabitants on the planet as well. And from the strong visual you are able to build into a living, breathing, unique character. She fits into the crew dynamics (particularly through her relationship with Scotty) wonderfully well and she is a kick ass queen. She is a technical genius with no training or teaching, able to set up a number of booby traps/cloak the Franklin/keep auxiliary power going. She has this deep pain that is in direct relation to Kirk’s. Her father - her entire family - died trying to save her, just as Kirk’s did. She has fears, she has strengths, she loves punk music! Jaylah on paper is amazing and actress Sofia Boutella is incredible in the part. Boutella is able to portray all of Jaylah’s wonderful layers - her badass exterior, her painful past, her growth and dealing with her fears - beautifully. Boutella is a star on the rise in Hollywood (already having starred in Kingsman and appearing as the title character in the new Mummy film coming out soon) and to date this is - I think - her best performance. She is just SO good.

A quick final note: it has been said by the filmmakers that they will not be recasting Chekov after Anton Yelchin’s death. I want Jaylah to take his place on the bridge. Because I fucking love Jaylah.

16) The relationship Jaylah and Scotty forge is so fun and heartfelt. Jaylah is able to constantly surprise Scotty and show that she’s his equal in a lot of ways, but when it comes to the pain of her past Scotty is able to help her deal with that. It’s one of my favorite relationships explored in the film and I hope to see it continue in the future.

17) The relationship with Kirk and Chekov is explored a little more subtly than say Bones and Spock but it is still there. The fact that Kirk is able to signal Chekov to help him trap the traitor amongst their midsts, and then of course this wonderful piece of dialogue.

Seeing any two characters have this back and forth suggests they’ve done it before. There’s a comfort there that Chekov is able to talk to Kirk so honestly about his doubts and…I’m sorry, I’m just laughing thinking about this scene. I love the exchange between the pair.

18) So it later turns out that Krall is a captain named Edison from VERY early in the Federation’s life span.

Krall: “Federation has taught you that conflict should not exist.”

Krall [MUCH later]: “We knew pain, we knew terror. Struggle made us strong. Not peace, not unity.”

He is an outdated relic, an ancient ideology in a progressive time who thinks HIS way of life was right. And he’s willing to commit mass genocide because of his outdated and hateful ways. There’s also a lose of identity there, as he tells Kirk in the climax, “I’ve missed being me.” That lose of identity in the face of infinite space is exactly what Kirk is at risk of going through, so there’s a connection there between the two that ties back in to Kirk’s main conflict (something that I love). All in all, Krall’s pain is utterly unique in the Star Trek films I’ve seen and I am impressed with the elegance they were able to write it.

19) Spock and Bones having a heart-to-heart about where Spock is in life is one of the best scenes in the film.

It is in this moment when Spock is at his most vulnerable, and it’s with Bones. He speaks as to how being one of the last Vulcan’s effects him, how it was that and the death of Spock-Prime which upset him so deeply he even broke up with Uhura because he thought he had to. He’s planning on leaving Starfleet. But Bones is an excellent friend in this scenes, listening to Spock and offering some kind non-judgmental words. He even gets Spock to laugh! It’s a great moment between these two characters who have been around for 50 years and I think one of the best character moments in all of Trek.

20) Did I mention I love Jaylah?

21) If I haven’t made it clear before, this film has some very well done humor. I think this is largely a result of Simon Pegg’s work on the script, but it wouldn’t have worked if cowriter Doug Jung hadn’t worked with him on it. Some examples…

Scotty: “I have an idea sir, but I’ll need your permission.”

Kirk: “Why would you need my permission?”

Scotty: “Because if I mess it up I don’t want it to be just my fault.”

22) So 2009′s Star Trek was about Kirk and Spock moving past their conflict to form a respect and kinship with each other. Star Trek Into Darkness had them solidifying their friendship. And now we’ve reached this point:

23) I think something the filmmakers really use to their advantage is taking problems and solving them in a creative way through the sci-fi genre (where aliens are a norm and we have artificial gravity and such). A brilliant example of this:

24) The funniest freaking part of the entire movie!

25) I know I mentioned this before, but Jaylah’s past trauma with her family is incredibly strong for me.

Jaylah [talking about Krall’s hostage camp; refusing to take Kirk and company to their crew]: “Everyone who goes there he kills!”

And it is just another great example of the relationship Scotty and Jaylah have made.

Kirk [after Jaylah leaves & Scotty moves to go after her]: “Let her go.”

Scotty: “She’s lost people too, Captain.”

The fact that Scotty is able to help Jaylah through her grief in a respectful but pressing way speaks a lot to me. And Kirk overhears this, specifically that Jaylah’s dad sacrificed himself for her. Hmm, why does that sound familiar?

The entire scene is great for me for those key reasons: it develops Jaylah, it strengths her relationship with Scotty, and it ties into Kirk’s conflict in the film.

26) The entire diversion/rescue scene on the motorcycle is awesome and one of the strongest set pieces in the entire film. It is brilliantly and intelligently choreographed, keeping the audience and Krall on their toes through the use of decoy projections. It also features a fight between Jaylah and Mannix which ties directly into her arc as he is the man who killed her father. And Kirk - who said to, “Let her go,” about ten minutes earlier - risks himself to save her. She’s a part of his crew now and I love that.

27) Remember how in the 2009 Star Trek Sulu messed up the take off of the Enterprise the first time? Well, I think the phrase, “started from the bottom now we’re here,” applies perfectly to this moment.

31) Ladies & gentlemen: the most badass moment in Star Trek’s 50 year history.

Some highlights:

  • Kirk saying, “That’s a good choice,” tying directly into Young Kirk rocking out to this song in the 2009 film.
  • Bones: “Is that classical music?”
  • Chekov toe tapping.
  • Just how f***ing awesome that moment is. It gets you pumped!

I don’t know who had the initial idea to put this scene in the film, but I love them and I want to give them an award or something. This is glorious.

32) The climactic fist fight between Kirk and Krall is a lot of fun. Similar to Syl’s alien head hiding an important piece of technology, the filmmakers are able to use the concept of artificial gravity in a space station to their advantage by choreographing a unique and fun fight scene.

35) Holy shit, I honestly cannot believe I forgot that Spock found this in Spock Prime’s belongings:

Not only is this a wonderful thing to include in the 50th anniversary of Star Trek but also it is something Spock REALLY needed to see. He wanted to live the life Spock Prime did and he thought that meant continuing the work on new Vulcan. But then he sees that Spock Prime was with the Enterprise crew DECADES into a future. He had a family for life. And so does Spock.

36) It’s hard for your eyes not to fall on Anton Yelchin when Kirk makes a toast, “To the Enterprise and to absent friends.”

37) The fact that the entire main crew of the Enterprise gives the ending monologue for the first time speaks greatly to themes of unity present in the film and Kirk’s giving them credit.

It’s not often that I talk about an end credits song for a film, but I felt I should make an exception this case. Rihanna is a major Star Trek fan, saying:

“This is something that’s been a part of me since my childhood, it’s never left me, I love Star Trek. It was automatic. I would do anything in terms of music. It’s such a big deal not only as a fan, as a musician… because Star Trek is such a big deal across the globe.”

You can feel the love for Trek come across in the song. Not necessarily a radio pop hit, I love this song nonetheless. I find it moving and it’s themes of fighting back after you get knocked down very much tie into the hope and resilience which is Star Trek. I think it is a wonderful composition and a great addition to the Star Trek musical library.


I love Star Trek Beyond. Although the 2009 film introduced me to the franchise, this film has the potential overtime to claim its place as my favorite Trek film. It is an absolutely perfect balance of old and new Trek, featuring standout writing, amazing effects, new ideas, a vibrant visual design, and a standout cast (with special mention to Sofia Boutella as Jaylah). It is a totally wonderful that taps into the hope and sense of adventure that the series has always been about. If you were disappointed with Star Trek Into Darkness or are looking to reclaim some love for the series - or even if you’re watching for the first time - give this film a viewing. You won’t regret it.

You didn’t know much about the man you worked for other than his name. You had never seen Thomas Jefferson. He was never there when you and the other maids went to clean his giant home that you thought Jay Gatsby would live in if he had the chance. It was a huge white mansion with pillars, courtyards with ponds, grand, spiraling staircases between the multiple floors,  and far too many rooms to count, despite your best efforts. All of the roughly five thousand bedrooms had their own closets and bathrooms, all of which had to be cleaned every other day even though they never looked as though they had been used. The whole house was to be scrubbed top to bottom multiple times a week. It was a lot of work, but the mystery man paid really well and you loved the girls you worked with.

You liked to think that Thomas was a real life Gatsby, what with all of the secrecy, rumors, and apparent wealth. All anyone knew was his name and the rumors to go along with it. One story was that he was an old man who had no family or friends to speak of. That he had a long, successful career that brought him his great wealth and that he now spent his days reading in more languages than anyone could count simply because he had nothing better to do. Another  was that he was, in fact, a young man who had married even younger. That he and his young wife traveled to grand places all over the world and were never home because of wealth on boths sides. Yet another  was that he was a middle aged lawyer who had had a wealthy husband who died and left his fortunes. That he stayed in the country a majority of the year because he could no longer handle life in the city without the man who had brought him there.

Perfectionism is a vice that many students, especially “gifted” ones, struggle with. If left unchecked, it can lead to anxiety, procrastination, and lower academic performance. This post will hopefully inspire you to stop fearing failure and embrace the fact that making errors is an essential part of the learning process.

RECOGNIZING PERFECTIONISM

Striving for improvement is a great thing, but it can turn into perfectionism if taken overboard. Knowing that you are capable of great things and pushing yourself to meet your full potential is healthy and encouraged. Feeling inadequate and trying to meet a goal to validate yourself is perfectionism, which is both stressful and unhealthy.

You may have perfectionistic tendencies if you meet some or all of the following criteria:

  • You spend extremely long amounts of time on tasks (ex: you spent two hours on an assignment your classmates spent thirty minutes on).
  • You feel anxious, upset, or angry while trying to meet your own standards.
  • You dwell on mistakes (even small ones) for a long time.
  • You refuse to delegate tasks to others (ex: you do most/all of a group project by yourself).
  • You often agonize over minute details (ex: you read over a message several times before sending it to check for typos).
  • Your friends and/or family regularly tell you your standards are too high.
  • Your successes never seem to be enough; you always think you could have done more (ex: you aimed for a 90% on your test and earned a 95%, you feel happy for a while, but then begin to feel bad for not getting a 100%).
  • You have an all-or-nothing mindset. You feel like anything less than perfection is failure, or being anything less than the best is worthless.
  • Your motivation comes more from the fear of failure than the pursuit of success.

OVERCOMING PERFECTIONISM

Don’t take it personally. As my English teacher used to tell us, “I grade the writing, not the writer.” A judgement on your work is not a judgement on yourself. It’s easier said than done, I know, but remember that grades are not a reflection of your intelligence, self-worth, or potential. All they measure is how the work you produced compared to the grading criteria. Read the scores/comments you get, resolve not to make the same mistakes again, then apply what you’ve learned next time.

Zoom out. When you find yourself dwelling on one failure, step back to look at the bigger picture. Will this still matter tomorrow? Next week? Next year? In ten years? Chances are the answer is no. You’ll have so many more opportunities to succeed, because you are the one who determines your future success and happiness– not the test you failed, not the teacher who gave you a low score, not the old, grumpy admissions officer who rejected you.

Be your own best friend. We tend to be much harsher on ourselves than on others. Instead of criticizing yourself, think about what you would say to a close friend if he/she were in your shoes. You would never look down on your friend for missing the winning goal in her soccer game; you would instead congratulate her for her effort, sportsmanship, improvement, team spirit, and bravery in taking risks. So treat yourself the same way.

Surround yourself with positivity. If the people you hang out with are constantly agonizing about missed test questions, comparing themselves to others, and making you feel bad about yourself, it’s going to be a lot harder to end your own perfectionism. Don’t read magazines that make you insecure about your body. Unfollow social media friends who only post to show off their “perfect” life. Distance yourself from people who are negative and draining, and spend more time with friends who are encouraging and uplifting.

Set boundaries. In my post about getting better sleep, I mentioned that I set a rule for myself to always, always go to bed by 11 pm, even if I have incomplete schoolwork. This boundary ensures I’m getting adequate sleep and taking care of my health, and it also pressures me to finish my assignments in a reasonable amount of time. I won’t be tempted to spend an hour making the color and font on my Powerpoint slides perfect if I know I have other tasks that need to be finished before 11. This technique works for studying in general, not just your sleep schedule. Schedule a reasonable amount of time to complete something, stick to it, and learn to settle for “good enough” instead of “perfect”.

Find others’ mistakes…and realize they don’t matter. The next time you’re nervous about messing up during a class presentation, think about the way your favorite teacher teaches. I can guarantee that he stumbles, stutters, and loses his train of thought at least once during every class. But those slip-ups don’t prevent you from learning from him, right? Yes, your teacher could spend more time making his delivery absolutely flawless (just as you could spend hours and hours making your presentation perfect), but he doesn’t (and you shouldn’t), because minor mistakes don’t prevent his lesson (and your presentation) from being valuable and informative.

The same goes for just about everything else, and mistakes both big and small. All the TV shows you watch have goofs, plot holes, and/or gaps in editing, but that doesn’t stop you from loving them. All of your friends have received grades they weren’t happy with, but that doesn’t stop them from being good, intelligent, talented people. All famous actors have been in a box office bomb, all business gurus have had companies fail, all Olympians have lost important competitions. None of those people have let their failures stop them from getting up and trying again. And neither should you.

Slytherin vs. Hufflepuff

Alright darlings, I’ve gotten many requests all for this since yesterday and these two are more similar than you think.  It’s pretty common to confuse these two houses.  For example, many people upon meeting me call me a hufflepuff and call a close friend of mine a slytherin, when really it’s the opposite.  We’re just each more stereotypically the other house…. I bake cookies to bring into classes and she is more aggressively opinionated, but, I digress…..

Here’s how they’re similar:  They’re both extremely hardworking and driven, tend to be steady in working towards their goals.  They tend to treat everyone with a certain level of dignity, no matter their feelings towards you (unless you are truly BEYOND terrible for them, in which case they will be passive aggressive).  Both care about what people think of them, though for slytherin it’s more about a general reputation than specific people’s opinions, and they each feel that other people should be able to do their own thing, or think what they like, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone/isn’t pushed on them.  They tend to be very likable and charismatic from the outside, and most people enjoy their company. Basically, they do tend to seem similar from the outside (unlike in the books where slytherins are like performing blood sacrifices and hufflepuffs just sit and cry all day (thank you, Harry, for your Gryffindor bias).  So…. differences:

1. When they don’t like someone: Hufflepuffs tend to dislike them and go no further, like I hate you, you hate me, I’m going to ignore you now, let’s move on.  Slytherins….. well, we’re a bit more petty.  It’s more like, I hate you and I’m going to go out of my way to either make other people subtly dislike you, or I feel like I can’t move on until I have done something tangible with my own life to write this wrong.  Basically, slytherins turn into VERY unhealthy, self-obsessed versions of gryffindors.  They need to prove it to OTHERS that their better, so when they’ve finally completed this big task to do so, they’re looking around to see that no one cared about it as much as they did, and…. well, they tend to be bitter.  Basically, in general, hufflepuffs tend to be more comfortable with emotions in general, and are usually healthier, while slytherins are so obsessed with perfection that they repress their emotions and either become whiny or unable to move beyond the point that they’ve told you TEN BILLION TIMES.

2. Honesty and fairness:  I think I’ve brought this up before, but this is where hufflepuff gets its positive reputation while slytherin screws itself over.  Hufflepuff wants thing honest and fair, even if its at their expense and for the benefit of someone they don’t like.  They are a bit more ‘well this is right, and so this is how it should be, for ALL people’.  Slytherin wants things fair for everyone, as long as they aren’t being hurt, and, well, they really don’t see anything wrong with favoritism as long as they’re on the receiving side.  In fact, though they understand it’s wrong and may briefly feel bad, a slytherin who sees something unfair happening to an enemy accounts it more as ‘karma’ than something they should be stopping.  Example: a hufflepuff and a slytherin both are students of a very frightening and intense professor who grades impossible, everyone hates them, but for some reason, this professor has taken a special liking to the student (and a few others), and treats them specially.  They get easier grading, flexibility with deadlines, basically anything they ask for, freedom to say whatever they want, and do whatever they want.  However, the rest of all the students are still stuck with nearly failing every assignment and being treated…. well, less than you are.  The hufflepuff says ‘I know this is nice, but it’s still wrong, and really, the teacher shouldn’t do that to me’.  They try to talk with the teacher offhandedly about how others are having difficulty and saying things are unfair, even if it means that they lose their spot as a ‘favorite’.  Slytherin goes, no way man.  If they did something to get special treatment, they won’t mess it up, they’ll use it. If one of their friends complains, they’ll tell then exactly how to become a favorite as well, but the slytherin won’t mess it up for themselves, because a little part of them inside LOVES to feel like they are being treated differently.  

3.  Idealism:  Underneath everything, idealism is a big difference between the two houses.  Slytherin sees things exactly as they are, and if that’s the game the world is playing, it’s stupid to play by any other rules.  Hufflepuff has this more dreamy idealism about how things should be and how they could be, and tries to live and maneuver within the self-imposed constraints they have.  Slytherin sets their rules based on how the world works, and how they can play the game more efficiently, and hufflepuff is playing based on their rules, because the world needs kindness and help, not ruthlessness.  Hufflepuff is the most unrealistic house in this sense, and can often overlook the unfortunate state of reality, which means they are either extremely successful because they won’t accept what is, or very unsuccessful for the same reason.  Slytherin is the most realistic house, meaning while they know how to accomplish much, they almost always become depressed and bitter at the state of the world, feeling as if there is no way to change it, and nothing will become better.  

4. Centering in self:  Both houses are the two that make their decisions based on the world, but slytherin is centered in self while hufflepuff is centered in others.  Hufflepuff makes nearly all its decisions based on group dynamics and balance, and peace, calm, all those nice harmonious things.  Ultimately, they want to do for other people and will sacrifice their own wants.  Slytherin knows what it wants for itself, an typically makes the decisions that it thinks will help to get it what it wants, and though they try not to burn their bridges, slytherins can probably count on one hand the people they truly care about.  Hufflepuff wants to save the entire world (again, idealism) while slytherin chooses a few and says screw all the rest (again, unhealthy bitter realism).

5. Openness in actions vs. Actions to serve other ends:  I’ve found this one to be pretty consistent.  When both houses do something, hufflepuff reasoning tends to be very clear while slytherin reasoning only makes sense to them.  Basically, hufflepuff is doing things for the obvious reasons, or for the sake of doing them, while slytherin is doing them for a reason 600 steps later (any means to achieve their ends).  Hufflepuff works at a soup kitchen.  Why?  They wanted to get some time volunteering and also helping other people feels nice.  Slytherin works at the soup kitchen.  Why?  Because they will be accurately able to determine what it is the needy are lacking, how they can, ten years from now work and run an organization to stop homelessness.  No, that makes too much sense; real life example.  Hufflepuff starts a blog.  Why?  Because they maybe want to connect with people who share their interests, and it’s a place of self expression.  Slytherin creates a blog?  It’s because they feel that with this blog, they will get dedicated followers and later have a fanbase to promote a book they wrote even though the things are in no way connected.  Basically, slytherin motivations are usually hard to understand in comparison to Huff’le puff.

1. Ask for help- Reach out to someone safe 

2. Inspire yourself- Carry something positive (e.g. poem), or negative (photo of a friend who overdosed)3. Leave a bad scene- When things go wrong, get out

4. Persist- Never, never, never, never, give up.

5. Honesty- Secrets and lying are at the core of self-harming behaviors; honesty heals them

6. Cry- Let yourself cry; it will not last forever

7. Choose self-respect- Choose whatever will make you like yourself tomorrow

8. Take good care of your body- Eat right, exercise, sleep, safe sex

9. List your options- In any situation, you have choices

10. Create meaning- Remind yourself what you are living for: your children, love? truth? justice? God?

11. Do the best you can with what you have- Make the most of available opportunities.

12. Set a boundary- Say “no” to protect yourself

13. Compassion- Listen to yourself with respect and care

14. When in doubt, do what’s hardest- The most difficult path is invariably the right one

15. Talk yourself through it- Self-talk helps in difficult times

16. Imagine- Create a mental picture that helps you feel different (e.g. remember a safe place)

17. Notice the choice point- In slow motion, notice the exact moment when you chose self-harm behaviors

18. Pace yourself- If overwhelmed, go slower; if stagnant, go faster

19. Stay safe- Do whatever you need to do to put your safety above all

20. Seek understanding, not blame- Listen to your behavior; blaming prevents growth

21. If one way doesn’t work, try another- As if in a maze, turn a corner and try a new path

22. Link PTSD (self harming behaviors) and substance abuse- Recognize substances as an attempt to self-medicate

23. Alone is better than a bad relationship- If only treaters are safe for now, that’s okay

24. Create a new story- You are the author of your life: be the hero who overcomes adversity

25. Avoid avoidable suffering- Prevent bad situations in advance

26. Ask others- Ask others if your belief is accurate

27. Get organized- You’ll feel more in control with lists, “to do’s” and a clean house

28. Watch for danger signs- Face a problem before it becomes huge; notice red flags

29. Healing above all- Focus on what matters

30. Try something, anything- A good plan today is better than a perfect one tomorrow

31. Discovery- Find out whether your assumption is true rather than staying “in your head”

32. Attend treatment- AA, self-help, therapy, medications, groups- anything that keeps you going

33. Create a buffer- Put something between you and danger (e.g. time, distance)

34. Say what you really think- You’ll feel closer to others (but only do this with safe people) 

35. Listen to your needs- No more neglect- really hear what you need

36. Move toward your opposite- E.g. if you are too dependent, try being more independent

37. Replay the scene- Review a negative event: what can you do differently next time?

38. Notice the cost- What is the price of substance abuse/self harming behaviors in your life?

39. Structure your day- A productive schedule keeps you on track and connected to the world

40. Set an action plan- Be specific, set a deadline, and let others know about it

41. Protect yourself- Put up a shield against destructive people, bad environments, and substances

42. Soothing talk- Talk to yourself very gently (as if to a friend or small child)

Thank you so much for providing the caps! I definitely don’t remember every single word or line in the school trials (I’ve watched many of them for hours straight until about 4 in the morning and my sleeping habits haven’t been the best lately), so having screencaps and/or transcriptions always helps a lot!

Now that you’ve provided the caps, I do remember this scene again! Even this early into the game, Ouma loves dropping plenty of hints that he’s not nearly as bad as he’d like people to think.

Good Girl Ch 35: I Love You Nightmare

“I’m sorry, I’ll be good,” I cry helplessly. My arms struggle uselessly against the ropes holding me to the metal chair.

“We’ve heard that shit before. You are just like the rest of them aren’t you?” He sneers at me. “Just another slut who used her body to keep herself alive. You never cared did you?”

I try to respond threw my cries but I can’t get the words out.

“Did you?” He yells in my face.

“I love you!” I scream out only earning myself a hard slap across the face. I’m in shock for a minute, he’s never hit me before.

“I’m tired of your fucking lying,” Another one growls.

Kai glares down at me, “I can’t even stand looking at her. Fucking disgusting.”

Sehun appears next to him, “Not so brave now are you? What happened to not being afraid of us? I thought you loved us.”

“I did,” I mumble softly, “I do.”

Suddenly Kris is there, his loud laugh fills the cement room and it’s not as comforting as it usually is, “You do? Why? Sure we babied you for a while but you have to know it didn’t mean anything right? You were just our little fuck toy.”

Chanyeol is laughing along with him as I cry harder, “I don’t think she knew. What a dumb girl. Did you really think that we cared? We could have any girl we wanted, why the hell would we pick someone like you? A mutt?”

“You guys are being too mean,” Lay is there with a teasing pout. “You are making the little baby cry,” He mocks me.

“Daddy why?”

“We’re bored,” Suho answers with a shrug. “You knew this would happen the moment you got in our van. This could only end one way Jooyoung… your little body torn to pieces like that boy we killed for you. It only seems fair that you die the same way our dear friend did.”

“I can’t believe we killed Joon for this bitch,” Baekhyun tsks.

“Should have just let him fuck her, that could have snapped us out of her little fucking spell quicker. So much time and money wasted on her.”

Tao looks scarier then I’ve ever seen him, “At least we can get back at her a little now.”

“Who would like to go first?” Luhan claps his hands together happily.

“Me first,” My loving Xiumin appears in front of me with cold eyes and some kind of metal scooper in his hand. I remember what someone said at the meeting, ‘I heard his teeth were ripped out, along with his eyes’.

I scream bloody murder as I struggle to get away from what I know will be coming, “Daddy please! What are you doing? Don’t come any closer!”

“Maybe we should take her tongue out first, I’m getting annoyed with her fucking whining,” Kyungsoo’s harsh words make me stop and seal my mouth closed.

“I like when she whines,” Baekhyun chuckles as he grabs a fist full of my hair and pulls so hard it knocks me back on to the floor.

“Please stop,” I cry as I stare up into their cold lifeless eyes.

“Why? What could you do for us?” Chen is leaning over me.

“I’ll do whatever you want, I’ll be whatever you want. I’ll be such a good girl! I promise not to talk back or talk to any boys, I’ll do anything, just please don’t do this!” I beg.

“I don’t know boys, do we believe her?” Chen looks to the others who are beginning to crowd over me. The group shakes their heads.

“She doesn’t sound too convincing. I don’t think her heart is in it,” Kai hums.

“I’m with Kai on this one, I think she needs a little motivation,” Kris smirks before glancing at Chanyeol who is already holding some tool in his hand.

The normally happy giant crouches down, “I’m happy to give her some. Maybe a taste of pain will give you just enough to beg better. You need to sound weaker, make us care. Cause all I feel right now is irritated by your fucking fake promises. You couldn’t be a good girl if you tried. All you had to do was need us, to listen to us, to be a good girl. You couldn’t even do that. You’re just a piece of trash.” He grabs my jaw and squeezes until I open my mouth.

“Make sure it hurts Yeol,” Chen eggs him on, “I want to hear her scream.”

“Come on beg like the bitch you are.”

“Daddy please,” My heart feels like it’s been shredded to pieces. I’ve heard people say horrible things to me before but I never really cared. It’s different now though, their words cut me deeper than I thought possible. “I’ll be a good girl!” I yell as he brings the tool closer to my teeth. “I’ll be a good girl! I promise I’ll be a good girl!” I scream and thrash as if my life depends on it. Laughs echo around me.  “I’ll be a good girl, I’ll be a good girl!”

“You better be.”


“My love wake up!” Jiyong is shaking me awake. Tears are streaming down my face as I continue to scream. I pause for a minute when I realize I’m not in the cold dark room anymore. Jiyong wraps his arms around me a pulls me close.  “It’s okay Beautiful, I’ve got you, I got you.” He rocks me back and forth on the bed. Next to me Jihyo is passed out cold, not even my screams were loud enough to wake her.

I can’t stop shaking in his arms, the tears continue to roll down my cheeks and my breathing is ragged. I bury my face in his chest and breath in his familiar scent, I need something to ground me back in reality right now. My hands grip his shirt as I get as close as humanly possible to him, thankfully he doesn’t seem t mind.

“Nightmare?” He asks when my breathing finally calms down and I stop crying.

I can’t get myself to respond just yet so I nod.

“Do you want to come sleep with me?” He offers sweetly.

But I shake my head.

“You don’t have to be brave, they told me it’s okay if you’re scared. Do you just want me to leave you here?”

Again, I shake my head.

“What do you want to do than?”

“I want Daddy Xiumin.”

Now it’s his turn not to respond.

“Thank you so much for an amazing weekend but I want to go home. I want my daddies. I don’t care if they throw me away later, I need them right now.” I’m crying into his chest again and I feel horrible for saying it to him but he isn’t what I need right now.

“I’ll call them,” He mumbles as he picks me up. “Until they get here you can come with me.” He quietly carries me back to his room and sits down on his bed where he still doesn’t let me go, instead he holds me on his lap with my face pressed into the crook on his neck. He grabs his phone off the night stand and calls them. The phone is loud enough that I can hear it but not very clearly. Whoever he calls answers on the third ring even though it’s four o’clock in the morning. The person gives quick, and almost bitter, greeting. “She wants you.” Is all he says before he hangs up.

“That’s all?” I whisper into his neck.

“That’s all it takes to make them come running for you.” We sit there in silence for a minute before he gets the nerve to ask, “What was your nightmare about?”

“They were trying to kill me.”

He chuckles humorlessly, “And that makes you want to go back to them?”

“I’m afraid they hate me, I need their reassurance that they don’t. That they still want me.”

“Would it be bad if they didn’t want you?”

I push away from him so that I’m fully straddling his lap but I’m too busy glaring at him to think about it, “What do you mean by that?”

He isn’t one bit bothered by my hostility. He places both on his hands on my face and strokes my cheeks softly. My glare softens at his actions, “I mean that would being with me be that bad?”

“Oppa,” I try to take his hands away but they won’t more.

“No, you need to hear this. You need to know how much you mean to me. You are my everything. Beautiful, you are the sunshine in my life, Tuesday is now my favorite day of the week and this will be one of the most memorable weekends of my life. It’s the first time I was able to hold you close while you slept. The first time I was able to wake up next to you and the first time I’m not worried about the time. I had you all to myself. You can try and tell me that you have your daddies and you don’t need anyone else but we both know it’s a lie.”

“Oppa please,” I beg him, I’m feeling too much right now to have him throw his heart at me. I’m not even able to hold my own without fucking it up, I can’t be in charge of someone else’s.

“I love you.”

“Oppa stop!”

“I love you Jooyoung.”

I try to fight away from his grip, his eyes are burning straight into my soul and I can’t handle it right now. I don’t know how I feel about anything other than wanting to go home and curl into a ball so I don’t have to deal with any problems for at least a few days. But he won’t let me go, he flips us over so he’s on top with that intense stare of his. My hands are pinned on either side of my head and I know it’s pointless for me to struggle at this point so I start to cry.

“I love you Jooyoung.”

“What do you want me to say to that?” I yell at him.

“I want you to admit you love me too. Say it out loud, just once.”

“I don’t,” It’s a lie.

“Say it!” His tone is harder, his hands tighten around mine when I seal my lips tight. “Why can’t you just admit it to me? Just to me! I won’t tell those fucking bastards I just need to hear it from your sweet mouth. I need to hear you say it, please my love, my sunshine, my moon, my stars, my everything. I just need to hear that you love me too.”

We just stare at each other for a minute. I can’t get myself to stop crying or to look away from him but he can’t either. His eyes blood shot from holding back tears, my heart breaks at the realization because I didn’t realize I was crushing his. I stop struggling in his grip.

He tries again, “I love you Jooyoung.”

“I love you Jiyong,” The words come out of my mouth barely above a whisper but he heard it. He closes his eyes for a moment but a handsome smile spreads across his face before he buries his face in the crook of my neck.

“I love you, I love you, I love you.” I’ve never heard him so happy. A small smile plays on my lips that try to hide but I can’t help it. I’m happy he’s so happy but I feel bad at the same time. I’m betraying my daddies, even though I’m forced into this situation, I could have gotten out of it. Jiyong would never hurt me, yet I decided to admit, to confess that I do love him. Not as much as my daddies of course, but I do love him. Our moment in broken by the sound of his phone ringing, “They must have been in town, fuck.”

He climbs off me as he grumbles something under his breath that I can’t quiet catch. Irritation is obvious in his voice as he answers the phone, “We’ll be down in a minute.” Without another word he hangs up and throws his phone on the bed.

“What about Jihyo?”

“I’ll take care of her, don’t worry. You just go home and go back to sleep. I’ll see you on Tuesday,” He sighs. He heads to the door but stops when he doesn’t hear me following. “Don’t want to go anymore?”

“I didn’t really have time to think of what I’m going to say to them.”

“What do you mean?”

I sigh, “I don’t know how to tell them that I had a nightmare where they tried to kill me.”

“Be a big girl and tell them just like that.”

I shake my head, “They don’t want me to be a big girl, I don’t want to be a big girl anymore.”

“Beautiful-“

I cut him off, “In my dream I told them I would be a good girl.”

He scoffs at me, “That was a dream.”

“No! You don’t understand,” I snap at him. “I can tell in real life that they are getting tired of my attitude. All they need me to do is need them, to listen to them, to be a good girl. If that’s all it takes to get them to keep loving me, I’ll do it.”

He doesn’t say anything for a minute. His phone goes off again but instead of reaching for it, he reaches for me. My legs are around his waist as he picks me up like a child.

“Oppa,” I question.

“If you want to be little, I’ll treat you like you are. You had a nightmare, act like it, they’ll worry over you like they want to.” He carries me to the elevator and holds me the whole way down. My face is buried in the crook of his neck when we reach the first floor. As soon as we step out of the elevator I feel them crowd around us but I can’t get myself to look right away.

“Is she okay?” Baekhyun worries. Kyungsoo and Lay’s voice echoes the same worry as they ask a dozen questions about what could be wrong with me. The empty lobby is soon filled with their familiar warm voices.

“Where is Xiumin?” Jiyong asks.

“He had to stay behind, why?” Kris’s voice is suddenly cold. I can feel him right behind me.

“She asked for him.”

“I’ll take her,” Kris eagerly places his hands on me.

“Is that okay?” Jiyong asks me.

I nod meekly, both nervous and excited to be back with them. Without much of a fight Jiyong hands me over to Kris. I latch on to him, not even giving him a chance to look at my face before I hide it in the crook of his neck. He smells like firewood and his clone that I love. God how I missed him, I missed all of them.

“She’ll be really tired. We didn’t get back till about two hours ago and her and Jihyo were messing around for about an hour of that before they passed out,” Jiyong tells them.

“Did she tell you what her nightmare was about?” Luhan wonders.

“You.”

This is a really fun ask that I’ve had sitting here for a while now, because it’s really, really interesting to think about.

Most of what I have is just speculation of course, and personal feelings about which characters they must have liked based on similarities, so I’ll try my best! You already mentioned Saihara and Tsumugi, and both of those are on-point obviously, so I’ll just handle all the other characters.

Top 20 Favorite Films of 2015

Just as the title says! I saw way more films this year than last year so obviously it was a lot harder picking favorites. I almost decided to increase the list to 25 but eventually opted against it. Also this list is going by 2015 USA release dates or whatever I happened to see at a festival in 2015. Before I start the countdown here are a few films I really loved that didn’t quite make the cut.

But anyway, here is the list of my favorite films of 2015 with a few, simple words on each.

20. The Diary of a Teenage Girl (dir. Marielle Heller)

As John Waters said in his top of the year list, this is a film that deals with sex between teens and adults that manages not to be creepy or unintelligent. I always hate when I’m watching films about sex and the actual sex is sugar coated or portrayed in a prudish manner. Thankfully, it’s not only incredibly frank about its subject matter, it’s also incredibly heartfelt (in part from the fantastic lead performance of Bel Powley). I went into this expecting another typical American indie comedy and instead got something incredibly funny, sweet and actually kind of edgy. 

19. Goodnight Mommy (dir. Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala)

When both my girlfriend and I were able to figure out the twist of this horror mystery film about halfway through its running time, neither of us expected to enjoy it nearly as much as we did… but by the time it ended we were floored. In a strange way, knowing the twist only added to the last incredibly disturbing, unpredictable and horrifying third of the film. And in many ways it made it only scarier, so much so that I wonder if it was intentional that we were able to figure it out? Regardless, there were gasps and screams in the theater and they definitely weren’t unwarranted. This film about two young boys who question their unrecognizable mother’s true identity gets pretty damn freaky. 

18. Tokyo Tribe (dir. Sion Sono)

Sion Sono is one of our greatest living filmmakers. So when I say a Sono film isn’t among his best work, you can still count on it being a hundred times more interesting than most people’s entire body of work. In this case, Sono crafted an insane, sloppy, brilliant and totally hysterical rap battle musical. The rapping itself isn’t all that great but I could care less. This is a blast from start to finish! Shot in a floating, god-like perspective we move from scene to scene as the film only builds in insanity, vulgarity and implausibility. But perhaps the best aspect of Tokyo Tribe is when the true intentions of its villain are revealed. I won’t spoil it here, but I always love films with high stakes (in this case warring gang tribes) which arise from something totally insignificant, as it only makes it more ridiculous. Far from perfect, but one of the most fun film experiences I had this year.

17. The Mend (dir. John Magary)

Definitely among the more underrated films on the list, this dry, (extremely) dark comedy explores something that I am personally fascinated with and tend to make films about myself: failed men. The Mend centers on two brothers who initially appear like polar opposites but are eventually both uncovered as pathetic, selfish and deeply angry individuals. Neither of them are very likeable but there are aspects of them that are vey relatable (in a scary way). Although I did frequently laugh during this film, most of the humor was so cringe-worthy and uncomfortable I wasn’t able to make a peep. It’s also incredibly well crafted, well paced and consistently manages to be visually interesting. 

16.  Mustang (dir. Deniz Gamze Ergüven)

What an absolutely phenomenal debut feature! Despite some big flaws (all the girls kind of blend together at the beginning of the film) I was so moved by this film I forgave all its problems. Mustang is about a group of sisters in Turkey whose home starts turning into a sort of prison as they are forbidden from interacting with the outside world for fear that they might ruin themselves before marriage. It manages to be inspiring without being sappy, and political without being in-your-face. The emotions of the film totally snuck up on me, and sure enough before the credits started I was tearing up. This is a fantastic feminist work of art that of course reflects the current cultural climate of Turkey but is also very universal. 

15. Anomalisa (dir. Charlie Kaufman, Duke Johnson)

Charlie Kaufman needs to be given every possible resource he needs so that he can make as many films as possible before he dies. The fact that he’s only directed 2 films is an absolute crime. Perhaps this isn’t as moving or as ambitious as Synecdoche, New York but it’s not trying to be. It’s a smaller, more intimate film that revolves around a motivational speaker who meets a woman in a hotel who seems to breath new life into him. Anomalisa is a stop motion film and it actually incorporates the puppetry of the main character into his breakdowns and fantasies. It’s a deeply sad film but one that abstains from being cynical. It also has the best sex scene of the year. Go figure. 

14. Taxi (dir. Jafar Panahi)

Iranian director Jafar Panahi was banned from filmmaking in his home country in 2010. Since then he’s made 3 feature films. Taxi is not only his best film under the ban, it’s also one of Panahi’s best films in general. The entire movie takes place inside a taxi cab as Mr. Panahi himself drives, picks up passengers, meets up with old friends and watches as his niece makes a film herself for a class project. It wasn’t until after the film ended that I realized the entire thing was staged. Taxi serves both as a meta discussion on the kind of society that would lock up and censor one of its best filmmakers (the ending of this film is heartbreaking given Panahi’s situation) as well as an incredibly sweet and intimate portrait of the people of modern Iran, the kind you won’t see in any western media outlets. The fact that this film exists at all is stunning, but the fact that it’s as good and engaging as it is is even more stunning. 

13. The World of Kanako (dir. Tetsuya Nakashima)

Without a doubt the most vile, repulsive, disturbing and transgressive film on this list, The World of Kanako is a mad whirlwind of violence and mayhem that doesn’t slow down once for the length of its two hour running time. We follow an ex-detective as he searches for his daughter and starts slowly falling down the rabbit hole of the pitch black world she inhabits. The editing is slick and quick as we are constantly jumping between 3 different timelines, trying to piece together just what happened to Kanako. What’s revealed is beyond perverse, as even our protagonist is shown to be as disgusting and amoral as any of the villains he’s chasing. Cinematically explosive (every trick in the book is pulled out in this film) and totally degenerate, I couldn’t help but get sucked into one of the most fascinating and exhausting films of the year. 

12. Victoria (dir. Sebastian Schipper)

At 138 minutes, Victoria is the longest single shot narrative film ever made. One might be worried that this gimmick would be distracting to everything else in the movie, but it isn’t.  The characters and their performances make the journey incredibly real and emotional (Laia Costa as Victoria was my favorite performance of 2015) . There were times where I even forgot that I was watching something done in one take. I don’t wanna give away too much about the plot because going in completely ignorant will probably lead to a much better viewing experience. I will say that this is the kind of naturalistic filmmaking I really admire. One where extraordinary events take place, but not a single moment feels untruthful. 

11. The Revenant (dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu)

As much as I really enjoyed Birdman, I didn’t quite think it was on par with some of Iñárritu’s best previous work (Biutiful and Babel are two favs of mine). However, The Revenant is without question one of his strongest and most impactful films. Teaming up a second time with Emmanuel Lubezki (arguably the greatest cinematographer currently working), together they crafted an absolute visual masterwork. The entire film could have have been silent and the story would have been as clear as day. DeCaprio also delivers the best performance of his career, achieving an almost Mifune-level over-the-top-ness that is constantly intense but never becomes cheesy. Out of all the films on this list, this one begs to be seen on a big screen. It’s a true spectacle. 

10. The Look of Silence (dir. Joshua Oppenheimer)

Oppenheimer’s follow-up to his masterful The Act of Killing is just as brilliant and perhaps even more powerful. Once again focusing on the Indonesian genocide of 1965, but instead from the point of view of a victim’s family. The brother of a murdered “communist” confronts all the men directly or indirectly responsible for his brother’s death. A beautiful but haunting film that’s extremely difficult to shake off once you’ve seen it. 

9. The Forbidden Room (dir. Guy Maddin. co-dir. Evan Johnson) 

A solid quarter of the audience I saw this with walked out of it. Maddin is a true cinematic madman, willing to try and do absolutely anything in his films. It would be kind of pointless to try to describe this movie because there are a million stories in it and about a billion things that happen in it. A lumberjack ends up in a submarine, bananas come alive and tell a story, a man becomes so obsessed with butts that he has parts of his brain removed, skeletons force a lover to don a poison suit, a mustache has a dream… etc. etc. etc. All shown through grainy, kaleidoscope-esque images. Equally hilarious, destructive and insane, this is probably one of the strangest films I’ve ever seen. It’s bizarre even by Maddin’s standards. 

8. Mad Max: Fury Road (dir. George Miller)

I mean, what is left to say about this one? This film seems to be on absolutely everyone’s “best of” list this year (and if it’s not I’m assuming that person either hasn’t seen it or is insane). It’s a masterpiece of the action genre. I’m not going to say much else about this one because if you have yet to see it, stop reading and go watch it. 

7. It Follows (dir. David Robert Mitchell)

This film has had me looking over my shoulder when I’m walking alone ever since I saw it. I’m one of those people who gets really scared by good horror. And man, this scared me like no other film I’ve seen recently. I’ve only just started watching more horror films (thanks to my girlfriend, who’s much more of a buff in the genre than I am) and this film definitely stands out as one of the best and most original American horror films in current memory. The concept of people -whom only you can see- following you no matter where you are and who are intent on killing you is terrifying enough, and thankfully this film is so well made that it truly is as scary as it sounds. 

6. World of Tomorrow (dir. Don Hertzfeldt)

The only short film I even considered to be on this list. Hertzfeldt has created yet another hilarious, emotional, and supremely intelligent film. He manages to pack more ideas into a single scene than many films can muster in their entire running times. A little girl is greeted by a 3rd generation clone of herself and is brought to the future, where she is shown and taught many extremely significant things… all at an age too young to fully grasp the information she’s given. By the end of this 17 minute journey, I was weeping. 

5. Wild Tales (dir. Damián Szifrón)

The opening scene of Wild Tales is the closest thing to Buñuel-style absurdity I’ve ever seen in a modern film. And the rest of the film is pretty great too! This dark comedic anthology film from Argentina really took me by surprise. It’s comprised of six unrelated stories that all deal with revenge taken to its most extreme, logical conclusion. I laughed so hard during this movie that the couple sitting in front of me in the theater moved seats. It’s extremely dark, at times absolutely absurd, beautifully shot and has a lot of fantastic social commentary that is very universal. One particular story about a man getting his car consistently towed is almost too relatable. 

4. The Lobster (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)

I’ve been a committed fan of Yorgos Lanthimos since Dogtooth, so when I heard the basic concept for The Lobster a year or two ago I’ve been eagerly anticipating it. Having finally seen it, I can safely say that it’s definitely Yorgos Lanthimos’s best film yet. The story, revolving around a hotel where single people are forcibly sent in order to find a new mate (and are turned into animals if they don’t), is one of the best films about how completely ridiculous relationships can be. The whole movie is a brilliant breakdown of what makes something normal and how arbitrary the rules in our society often are. It’s a hilarious, beautifully made film and has the best overall acting of 2015. 

3. The Hateful Eight (dir. Quentin Tarantino) 

What’s already turning out to be Tarantino’s most divisive film also turned out to be one of my favorites by him, if not my absolute favorite (a 2nd viewing will tell). Yes, the 70mm roadshow version made the screening really special (complete with an intermission and overture) but aside all hype surrounding the format, this is one of the few times I’ve felt like Tarantino was commenting on something other than filmmaking (or past films) itself. The Hateful Eight deals with issues of misogyny, racism, the death of the American dream and how all of those things fit into the myth of the American west and how that relates to our current culture. Also, the fact that it’s as engaging as it is for a 3 hour movie that takes place mostly in one location and only has despicable characters is a miracle. I personally think this is Tarantino’s smartest, most subversive and most mature film yet. 

2. TIE 

Mommy (dir. Xavier Dolan)

Xavier Dolan knows how to craft classy melodramas. The emotions the characters go through in Mommy are massive and almost become over the top. But instead they are very real and very felt in the audience when watching it… at least for me they were! I cried and cried during this movie. It’s the most emotional experience I had during any film from 2015. However it’s not just beautiful and heartbreaking, it’s also a marvel of filmmaking, using a totally unique 1:1 aspect ratio (one that’s not reflected in the still I chose), featuring incredibly sincere uses of pop songs, and having some of the best cinematography of the year. 

AND

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (dir. Roy Andersson)

2015 seemed to be a great year for absurdist comedies! Roy Andersson is one of our best living filmmakers and every film he makes is an absolute treasure. Pigeon is no exception. Meticulously crafted for years on end, Andersson can spend up to 5 weeks just creating a single shot (everything in Pigeon is shot on a soundstage as well, so the shots can look exactly as Andersson likes them to look). Andersson is also a champion against outdated concepts of traditional story structure, with his last 3 films focusing more on moments and situations rather than arcs or characters (although Pigeon is the most character driven of the trilogy, but not by much). This film is also hysterically funny, filled with macabre, absurd and surreal moments. While the other two films in his trilogy may have asked “Where are we now” this one asks “What do we do now?” The answer (if he even has one) isn’t always pretty, but it’s almost always funny. 

1. Entertainment (dir. Rick Alverson)

Entertainment takes Gregg Turkington’s infamous “Neil Hamburger” character (an aggressive, intentionally terrible meta stand up comedian he’s played since the 90s) and poses the question “What if he were a real person?” The result is one of the strangest, most horrifying and most cinematic films of the year. This film entered a very dark part of my consciousness and stayed there. We follow “the comedian” as he travels from shitty gig to shitty gig playing to audiences that couldn’t care less (or sometimes are even violent). He occasionally makes phone calls to a daughter we’re not even sure is real, he visits relatives he has nothing in common with and he takes awful tours of the desert to kill time between shows. It unfolds its themes and story (if you even wanna call it a story) visually, utilizing gorgeous widescreen cinematography that takes advantage of its Mojave desert landscapes. Entertainment is an uncompromising character study of what it means to be “entertainers”, the mask they use versus their inward emotions and the hollowness that can accompany artists (especially unsuccessful ones). The film starts slowly moving into the totally surreal, and by the end we don’t even know what’s reality and what’s not. This is the most unsettling film I’ve seen all year. It truly got under my skin and as painful as it can be, it’s a trip worth taking. Even if the destination of said trip is the center of hell. 

Why Final Fantasy 15 lacks in quality compared to Final Fantasy 13. (I mean plot, not game play)

As much as I fucking love FF 15, and it’s game play, and it’s characters. The game is just a fucking tar pit. It’s suppose to tragedy, but as a Final fantasy title it was heart breaking. (the second one, the top being Crisis Core) 

Yell at me, go ahead, but it just supports my love for the Final Fantasy 13 series. 

You know why?

Q: What was the inspiration for your “Stache”?

MB:(laughs) I’ve always been a big fan of Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario games. They always had great moustaches. I thought I would pay tribute to them with my “stache”.

Q: Growing up, how many people actually pronounced your last name properly? 

NB:(laughs) Not many! It’s not that easy. It’s a little bit my fault, though, because since I grew up in Ontario, I always Anglicized it.

Q: How’d you get so fast? 

PB: I don’t know. I started skating when I was three and I was always fast. When I moved from Junior B to Major Junior, I also started training on artificial ice where I had to pull my coach, who weighed 230 pounds, while I weighted 130. That probably helped me get faster, and I always work really hard in the summer to build up my power.

PD: Saku Koivu, because he was a great leader and I had a chance to see him often growing up I was more of a kid who played hockey instead of watching it, but i’d pick him.

DD: Probably when we went to the Eastern Conference finals[in 2014], after we beat Boston in Game 7 in their building. Personally, my first game and my first goal are both things I’ll never forget, but with the team on the whole, what we accomplished that year was special

Q: Who is the hardest player to knock off their feet?

AE: On our team, I’d say Chucky[Alex Galchenyuk] or Radu[Alex Radulov]. In the League, it’s either Connor McDavid or Alex Ovechkin.

Q: Who was your favorite NHL player growing up?

BF: When I was a kid, it was Peter Forsberg. I loved the Avalance. They were an exciting team, and then they made the deal to bring in Ray Bourque from Boston and won the Cup. Forsberg scored a lot of big goals. I even started wearing 21 because of him.

Q: Who on the team would be the class down and who would be the A+ student? 

AG: No question. Andrew Shaw would for sure be the class down. For the best student, I’d probably say Jeff Petry because he went to university and is a smart guy.

BG: I’m always excited to go up against Zdeno Chara, just because throughout my entire life, people always said I was too small. For me, there’s no bigger challenge than going up against the biggest guy in the League

TM: I’m just thinking about being aggressive for a good five to 10 seconds. Just being as aggressive as possible.

Q: How is your relationship with Brendan Gallagher since you punched him two years ago? 

AM: Oh, that’s a great question! On my first day here, Patch[Max Pacioretty] actually brought it up. He walked into the room and said, “ Have you and Gally talked about the time you hit him in Winnipeg?” We all just started cracking up. It was nothing. I was excited to be playing against a team like this and he was just doing his job. He’s kind of player you hate playing against, but you love to have on your team. I have so much respect for him.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time? 

JP: During the season, I pretty much just spend my free time at home with my son, Boyd. In the summer, I like to be outside, or I’ll go shooting or fishing.

TP: It was a dream come true. I’ve always dreamed about becoming a professional athlete, especially as a hockey player, and I worked really hard to get here. You have a chance to wake up, go to practice, and then have the day to spend with your family. We know we’re very privileged to have this opportunity.

Q: Which NHL player gives you the most trouble or is the most difficult to stop? 

CP: I would probably say Ovi[Alex Ovichkin] because he always seems to find an opening and he as a great shot.

Q: Who has the weirdest ritual or superstition on the team?

AR: Definitely Mitchy[Torrey Mitchell]. He makes all of us tap our helmets together in the hall before we go on the ice

Q: What’s your favorite road city?

ZR: During the year, you run into a lot of cold weather. That’s why a lot of the guys and I enjoy the California and Florida trips. It’s good to have a little break and enjoy the sun a little bit, not that we’re out in the sun a whole lot when we’re there. It’s always nice to break it ip mid-season.

Q: When you were traded to Montreal, what were you most excited about?

AS: I was really pumped about making new friends and meeting new people and forming relationships on and off the ice. And just the idea of pulling on this jersey with all the history that comes with it. I was just excited to take part in everything here.

Q: Do Carey Price and Al Montoya let you take full clappers in practice? 

SW: I’m sure they would, but I never feel the need to take huge slapshots, just in case I get someone in a bad place. There’s no reason to hurt your own goalie. The best time to fire off some of those is when there’s no goalie in the net.

Q: What motivates you to improve yourself every day?

GP: What you need to do not just every year, but every single day, is getting better. I think you have to take pride in knowing you’re helping your teammates and that they can count on you. But they also expect you to get better. If you don’t, you’re not just letting yourself down, you’re letting the team down. That’s what motivates me. That and also knowing that there’s always someone fighting to take your place and that you could end up out of a job
