“No, Gaila. I am not, absolutely not going to walk into Commander Spock’s office and suggest that we pretend to date for an entire summer. I mean, we… I… he’s not… I couldn’t even spend that much time with him, nor would I want to. He’s so… he’s just really… I have professional mores, Gaila. Standards of conduct that this… just, no. No. No, thank you for the idea, but no.”

“You go every Sunday night? How did I not know this?” Nyota asks. “It’s just this thing we do,” Gaila tells her. “Like with food. And drinks. And people. We all get together and talk about our homes and our traditions and celebrate our holidays and stuff like that. Look, you can come if you want but it’s all off worlders. It’s not really a human thing, you’d be the only one.”

“So you slept with a young, impressionable half-Vulcan, who you never thought you’d see again, and is now a decorated graduate, a superior officer, and even though you’re not interested in a relationship with him, he rocked your world in a way that you can’t forget,” Gaila said carefully. “Basically.” “That’s great. You and I are going to be best friends with a story like that.”

A young Vulcan decides to find a mate for his guardian, Spock. After careful calculations, Cadet Kirk is obviously the superior choice.

I Know You Better by CaityCat  T  4,620

The people of Twilar are a newly warp-capable species that has caught the eye of the Federation for more reasons beyond its planets’ deep, untouched mines and strategic placement along the border of the neutral zone. The Federation wants Twilar as an ally, but the people of Twilar have a very specific criteria for what makes a leadership team functional.

When Kirk and Spock make First Contact, they are immediately thrown into a globally broadcasted questionnaire competition which will decide whether of not the Twilar join the Federation.

Or, alternatively, Spock and Kirk play a high stakes version of The Newlywed Game.

We took care of it. by Scientia_Fantasia  M  3,720

“Jim, what the hell? You look like you got attacked by a coyote!”

And Then I Let It Go by kianspo  E  10,632

Post-Star Trek Beyond. The crew of the Enterprise gets a breather while they are waiting for their new ship. Jim uses the time to do something he had sworn he would never do.

Measure of Happiness by writeonclara  M  38,279

When Spock chose Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy, he had not anticipated cohabiting with the most illogical, irrational, emotional human he ever met.

On the flip side, Jim never asked for a Vulcan chaperone, especially one as snotty as Spock, son of Sarek.

A Starfleet Academy AU in which Spock adapts to human life, Jim learns very, very quickly never to play a prank on a Vulcan, and there are far too many people after Jim Kirk’s life.

In the Barren Wasteland by bexbedex  M  8,338

Spock has always been different. Neither wholly Vulcan nor human. He never suspected though, that his differences would set him so far apart.

In the Shadows by scifishipper M  25,202

Accused of treason and stranded on Vulcan, Cadet Jim Kirk is offered a solution to his problems: bond with Ambassador Sarek’s son, someone he has never met. When he finally meets his betrothed at the ceremony, the Vulcan’s face is disfigured by cruel scars. Now, penniless and trapped, Jim finds himself committed to a reclusive stranger with a dark past. Has he sealed his fate forever or is there hope for the two of them to find love?

Wrong Number by yaoichan12  NR  23,518

Spock develops a sudden friendship with a mysterious guy, Jim, after Jim mistakenly calls him. They agree to only talk via communicator and not to reveal too much personal information as to keep their identities mysterious and the situation fun. After a while of flirty (and perhaps naughty) conversations, Leonard convinces Jim that they should just meet already.
Spock agrees to meet, but has second thoughts when he arrives and sees how gorgeous Jim is. Spock doesn’t think Jim would still be attracted to him so he turns and leaves. Jim is not happy.

Happy reading!

So, question for you. Apologies if you've answered this before, but: I was just thinking about how weird/interesting it is that we have all this canon Star Trek media (show, movies, cartoons, novels) and yet, to my knowledge, there isn't an Official Canon for how and when Kirk and Spock first met (other than the reboot movies, which I wouldn't count). Do you have a particular headcanon for how you think it happened? And/or any fanfics you'd particularly recommend?

personally, i love the idea of jim materializing on the transporter platform and the first thing he sees is spock. the enterprise is undergoing reconstruction from the crisis that nearly killed pike and jim beams over to meet spock and more of pike’s execs. of course, they’ve seen each other when they were researching personnel charts but you know how pictures don’t really do justice to the real thing? lol so they have a mutual, internal screaming “oh no he’s hot” moment and then go on with the official business. :D

Time Canary Week: Scene Stealer AU: Star Trek AOS

Captain Rip Hunter recruits Sara Lance into Starfleet after finding her picking fights in a bar in Riverside, Ohio. She’s got a problem with authority and a rebellious streak a mile wide, but she’s a tactical genius who is wasting her potential. As a cadet, she gains infamy for being a rule breaker, but Captain Hunter recognizes her brilliance and takes on the role of her mentor. Upon graduation, she’s assigned to his ship, the USS Waverider, where her unorthodox methods help save the fleet and Earth, after a mysterious ship from the future emerges from a blackhole.

Upon the completion of the Waverider’s first mission, Captain Hunter, now an Admiral, steps down from the chair, promoting Sara to Captain of the Waverider.

While transporting Admiral Hunter to a diplomatic conference in Yorktown, the Federation’s newest base, a space pirate by the name of Kanjar Ro attacks the USS Waverider, taking Admiral Hunter hostage. With the crew decimated, and the ship damaged beyond repair, Captain Lance forges on to save Admiral Hunter from Kanjar Ro. He’s the man who saved her life and gave her purpose, and she can’t leave him behind. She has no idea how she’s going to manage it, but she’s probably going to break a lot of rules.

Can they become a team? Can Cadet Pink and Yellow figure out why they hate each other even though they secretly want to be friends? Even though they wouldn’t let anyone else hurt the other?

au where alexander comes onto ds9 with worf and they have the same strained but loving dynamic as tng instead of the bullshit that actually happened.

lal never died and instead because a starfleet cadet at about the same time as nog, and decides to farm out to deep space nine as well because worf is there and worf is basically literally the only person she knows who isn’t on the enterprise.

ziyal is treated like the child she is instead of that creepy bullshit that happened in canon.

and the three of them plus jake and nog firm a friend group and get up to stupid teenage shenanigans.

jake is the ringleader. he makes the plans and gets everyone together and comes up with at least 50% of all the Shenanigan Ideas.

nog is the worrier. “we’ll get caught!” “do you know how many rules we’re breaking?” “we are sooooo dead.” but he comes along anyway.

ziyal is the cheer. she’s all bubbles, all the time, full of energy and happiness. expects everyone to be nice and is adored by all.

alexander is the kid brother. he’s the only one still in keiko’s schoolhouse. he likes to pretend he’s too cool for everything but he isn’t.

Lol okay let's try this again: McKirk - My Life Is Like A Space Opera (WTF?!?)

We start out with Jim and Bones meeting on the shuttle, as they memorably do in AOS.  But in this version of their story (and as a McKirk Academy AU), there are increasing hints that Starfleet is just a little more cut-throat than the guys might have guessed.  But neither of them are intimidated by big talk, and they pass Bones’s flask back and forth enough times that they barely notice when two of the cadets don’t appear to get off the shuttle with everyone else.  They shrug off murmurs and shifty eyes while they head to official receptions and check out the area bars and start to scope out their classmates – after all, Jim’s dealt with tons worse at home, and Bones has just been through the wringer with his divorce.  Just because it’s a little competitive, honestly – how bad can Starfleet really be?

As this Academy AU unfolds, we have the typical Jim Kirk shenanigans of AOS – flirting and strutting and getting drunk and creating a veneer for his competitiveness with sheer charm (and surreptitiously studying like a mofo so that he aces all his classes).  And he hooks up a lot with other cadets, sure, but can you blame him when the pillow talk gives him otherwise inaccessible info?  And Bones excels too – in between winning lots of friends and admirers despite his scowling grumpy demeanor, he’s such a gifted doctor and surgeon that mentors lean on each other a little too hard to try to get him on their team; at least one commodore ends up “retiring” early.  But as the guys head out to parties together and get caught up in pranks and very, very gradually start to realize that there might be something more between them, there’s an increasing unease about how people advance at and, indeed, make it out of the Academy all in one piece.

The attrition rate for cadets dropping out and/or disappearing from campus is, shall we say, a bit high?  It’s kind of a joke that everyone laughs at when there are campus dances or chances to socialize with the brass.  Hey, whatever happened to Cadet Morton, the one who asked too many questions?  *someone makes a slashing motion across their throat and winks*  And however uneasy Bones and Jim might feel about this world they’re now enmeshed in, more than anything, they know they’re both survivors.  People try to come between them – an upperclassman named Finnegan who tries to bully Jim and ingratiate himself with Bones in a set of schemes that start off as slightly hilarious but annoying pranks but soon turn into threats and fierce traps.  But no one who comes at Jim and Bones lasts very long, and at Starfleet, it’s all about whoever is still standing at the end.

It’s when something happens to Christopher Pike – an “accident” that that leaves Pike injured but, unfortunately for his detractors, even more influential and more stridently protective of his cadets than he was before – that Jim and Bones vow to keep each other safe no matter what.  The situation they’re in intensifies, but so does their relationship; behind closed doors, they can be vulnerable with each other, and prepare to meet the competition outside.  And while there are still wacky adventures amid the jockeying for influence among the cadets, and late night studying and stumbling across the campus half-drunk even as the divisions between factions get harder to negotiate, Jim and Bones slowly amass supporters who are going to help the two of them get exactly what they want – Jim wielding power as the eventual Captain of one of the best ships Starfleet has, and Len on board with him as the man wielding the scalpel.  It’s Academy AU morphing into an AOS version of Mirror Mirror, and yeah, it has all the hallmarks of a Space Opera, but it’s the kind with hubris and violence and ruthless maneuvering, all infused with a manic gallows humor as Len and Jim team up in every way to make their mark on the Empire.

The Descent by auburnrecluse

The descent beckons as the ascent beckoned. Uhura looking at Kirk and Spock’s relationship

Starfleet Cadets Asha Bashir and Nog, both the first of their species to join. It’s uncharted territory, but they look delighted to be traversing it.

Cadet uniforms in my AU have more colour bands. This is because with the sheer range of different shapes and sizes of aliens wearing the uniform, the single colour band around the neck may not be visible or even possible. Colour bands around the neck but also a few of the limbs seems like a good practical way to be sure that the division is clear from any angle. For Asha and Nog, one colour band would have been fine, but there’s more on there anyway. Next time I draw an alien starfleet officer, I’ll probably apply the same changes to the full uniform.

Speaking of uniform: I’ve drawn it before but haven’t really talked much about how Ferengi wings + clothing works. Ferengi are flightless, and like Cardassians they’re primarily quadruped with bipedal capability. The wings aren’t used for anything practical at all, and haven’t been for as long as Ferengi in their modern form have existed - they’re only still around (and still big) because they’re considered attractive, pretty much. For this reason, there’s no disadvantage to the multitude of piercings Ferengi have along the membranes in order to hook fabric and accessories around the arm and digit. You can see some of the piercings and hooks in this earlier art of Quark from two years ago

andrew minyard survived his shitty upringing but is now kicking around in iowa, kansas, the only genius repeat offender around. captain wymack, starfleet elite, recruits him after stopping him from destroying some fleet cadets in a bar brawl. andrew is ready to turn him down flat until wymack tells him, “your brother’s one of our best and brightest, got a commission waiting for him right out of the academy. i dare you to do better.”

and andrew goes, “brother???”

so andrew goes to strafleet academy where he makes friends with the weirdly cheerful medic renee who sat next to him on the shuttle, hunts down his brother who is a big fat nerd and golden boy of the science department but who also does not appreciate andrew poking around his home life and playing protector years too late.

and then andrew meets kevin, a starfleet celebrity who is all set to be a superstar once he graduates but who is terrified of serving under his adoptive brother, riko. kevin begs andrew for protection and andrew obliges after kevin promises to show him something worthwhile

so on their first practical exam in space kevin points out every star and every planet and he spews cultural facts and stories and anything he thinks will catch andrew’s attention

but the only thing that does catch andrew’s attention is the half-vulcan kid teaching 90% of the language classes at the academy and running the simulation. andrew is like “that poker face is a lie what is this what even”

so when they’re back planetside, andrew starts taking all of neil’s classes and picking fights in obscure languages and when it’s time for him to take the kobayashi maru he finds out neil programmed it, hacks it, and pretty much puts his middle finger up in neil’s face because he is inept at flirting and he wants to pry an honest reaction out of the half-vulcan

and then he’s being brought up on charges of cheating and suspended and there’s an sos from vulcan and everyone’s running off to save the planet and renee sneaks him aboard the Fleetfox where he pretty much wrecks the chain of command by issuing orders and expecting to be obeyed

and vulcan gets wiped out by some romulan asshole who takes wymack captive and turns out it’s RIKO fuck no wonder kevin was scared of the guy. Riko and his whole dynastic family are actually romulans from a parallel dimesion, shot through a wormhole and determined to kill neil for some so-called crimes neil committed against riko in the other universe (surprise surprise neil pisses off riko in every universe hurhurhur)

and so neil and andrew team up and kinda accidentally wrest control of the Fleetfox from Dan and matt, the current command team, to mount the most illogical and crazy scheme ever to save earth and wymack and they succeed!!! Huzzah! and when they get back to earth everyone is grateful and they’re assigned to the Fleetfox fulltime, where dan is commander under captain wymack, neil is third in the command chain and head of the linguistics department, andrew is head of security, renee is cmo, aaron is the science officer, kevin is the pilot, nicky is the navigator, matt is the head engineer, and allison handles the heavy artillery

and at some point neil enters pon farr and needs to mate or die and their are lifebonds and lots of sex and adreil. the end

Discworld witches as Starfleet medical personnel! For letsdrawdiscworld’s space theme. Pretty messy and sketchy but oh well. Hopefully I’ll do some other stuff this weekend because I have endless headcanons about space AUs, but it’ll probably be even doodlier and messier.

Anyway, so Granny’s the counselor Nanny’s the head nurse, and Magrat is the chief medical officer (Granny specializes in headology and Magrat’s canonically a better doctor, so.) Agnes is an ensign nurse, and Tiffany is a cadet specializing in psychology who’s doing a practical course on the station.

Granny’s Betazoid, terrifyingly good mind reader; Nanny’s human and and so is Tiffany; Magrat and Agnes are both Trill.
