Sigil of Abundance and Prosperity

Money magic can be tricky. There are a number of things that can go awry if you cast specifically for money. For instance, maybe you get the amount you want, but it happens through something awful, like getting hit by a car and receiving a settlement. Even if the money you desire does come to you through some non-terrible means, you might end up losing it immediately to unforeseen expenses. I read somewhere once that money is best regarded as a sort of trickster god, and I tend to agree.

As such, I find that it works out better to cast for the feelings and outcomes you want to get through that money, things like security, happiness, and having everything you need. That’s what this sigil is about. A lot of spring and summer energy poured itself into this one, and a goddess showed up completely of her own accord.

Here’s to abundance!

“With Satine, we needed to make it clear that this is the most beautiful woman in Paris. Admittedly, Nicole is already very beautiful, but she may not be everybody’s idea of ideal beauty, so we needed to make it clear with the costumes’ signs and symbols that that’s who she was. We looked to Hollywood’s glamour heroines like Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo - all sexually available to the men in the movies but emotionally very unavailable, and we looked at how that manifested itself in their clothing. Their wardrobes tended to be very graphic, unfussy, dramatic in their colour choice. We then used that.” - Catherine Martin (costume designer for Moulin Rouge!)

Hiveswap  Review (Spoiler)

We’ve been waiting an awfully long time for the Homestuck Adventure Game. First kickstarted in 2012, it’s gone through a troubled development cycle between 3 studios and…. yeah, you get the drift. Even in its final form, Hiveswap has gone through numerous unexplained delays (most infamously the last minute January Launch Month delay), and the development team for it had been very tight-hush until the end of August when a final release date of September 14th was announced.

Now that Hiveswap is out, we’re able to see for ourselves what the development team has been working on. Does it hold up to expectations? Does it make up for the hard delays and extremely concerning lack of communication?

Those are answers you can only decide for yourselves. What I will say, however, is this: Hiveswap is a charming and visually stunning introduction to the Homestuck world, that combines only the best of Homestuck’s humor with a new calmer, more curious and coherent setting.

It’s a shame, then, that the content of Act 1 isn’t a little bit longer. However, the gimmick of combining any item with each other and getting a new description will draw out the length for any lore completionists.

i... dont get all of this, really. the mcelroys have repeatedly explained that the graphic novel is NOT canon for the character's designs, and taako is literally blue because he is a magical elf? it was not made with antisemetic connotations, and not only that, but when was it ever stated that taako should be jewish. or mexican! in fact if they made them any type of hispanic people would get even angrier because of the names. why can't people just enjoy things?

cool! i’m happy to explain.

firstly, taako (named after tacos) who is on the quest to create the taco (established in here there be gerblins but not left there!) should be, or rather, better be, or rather, is mexican because if not, they are using a culture as a joke. that’s not alright! unless he is mexican, it doesn’t make sense for him to invent mexican food or have the name ‘taako taaco’

also, just so we’re clear: taako is a sun elf! they have “bronze-colored skin and hair most often of copper, golden blond, and black”. having him be green - or blue, or purple, or whatever - doesn’t make sense.

anyway, to the point of “people would get even angrier because of the names’ - why don’t we try actually asking these people who would apparently hate it even more? here’s one response, and here’s another. heck, here’s another. people wouldn’t get ‘more mad’ at all, because he’s not treated like a stereotype. here’s the thing, we shouldn’t assume. no one should just Assume that people are gonna hate a thing before they do it, especially in regards to like… representation. like that’s not their problem, it’s yours for not just asking them.

so, why can’t people just enjoy things? well, the adventure zone presented and continues to present itself as something that tries to do right by its fans, especially in the representation department. i wrote a thing about it here, at least in regards to race, but the basic thing i’d like people to take away from it is this paragraph

Saying ‘there’s no canon design’ for a character means nothing when the graphic novel, the merchandise, the posters, the zine - these all feature white designs. You can’t say you care about representation - how important it is to you - when you don’t represent anyone. You can’t say you accept all designs when the only ones that seem to be accepted all look the same. You can’t say there is no default when white is the default.

on twitter, @fraanziawhine made some really good points about how the representation in taz, like, works. and it’s not great. the mcelroys get praised for being empathetic, for being kind, but while i believe they try, they don’t ask for help with things they don’t know about - how to do race and lgbt rep for instance - and they do it wrong.

and you know what? it boils down to this: why are they more willing to make someone green than to make them brown?

fans of colour continually talk about why this is important, how to do better by us - and we do it well. regardless if we are ‘polite’ (spoon-feeding) or ‘angry’ (you know, like, the emotional humans that we are) we have repeatedly tried to get through to the mcelroys and say ‘hey, you might want to do this, if you’re so interested in doing it’.

taz celebrates its ability to bring all kinds of people together. however, it kind of seems like only a few kind of people are welcome.

acowar countdown challenge | favorite scene from acomaf: Ch. 45 Starfall

He leaned in, brushing his mouth against my heated cheek. I closed my eyes at the whisper of a kiss, at the hunger that ravaged me in its wake, that might ravage Prythian. And all around us, as if the world itself were indeed falling apart, stars rained down.

Bits of stardust glowed on his lips as he pulled away, as I stared up at him, breathless, while he smiled. The smile the world would likely never see, the smile he’d given up for the sake of his people, his lands. He said softly, “I am… very glad I met you, Feyre.”

Self-Promotion Shouldn’t Be a Dirty Word

There’s something I’d like to discuss with you guys – something a lot of us feel guilty for doing, but something that all of us should do – self-promotion. Specifically, I want to talk about promoting your content.

Most of the people I follow on this site, I follow for their excellent writing, or their beautiful art, or their fantastic graphics. Tumblr, for all its flaws, is a platform that lends itself to sharing your preferred means of creative expression. I also follow people for their great taste. Tumblr lends itself very well to content curation – sharing things that you like with other people you think will like them. And no blog consists of just created content – everyone needs to curate, too.

Therefore, it’s important both to content creators – people who make pretty stuff – and content curators – people who collect pretty stuff – to see all the good stuff you make. Now – how do you make sure your followers see that art you made or that fic you wrote or the meta you came up with or that rec list you put together – so that they can enjoy it, and share it with their followers, too?

That’s right – you promote that shit. Not all your followers are online at the same time. Any content you create needs to be shared multiple times, during different times of day. Some of your followers might not be online every day, so that means promoting it a few more times after the initial posting day. If your creative online presence goes across multiple platforms, share on all of them! That means you share the story you posted on AO3 on tumblr, and that you share the painting you posted on Tumblr on Twitter, so on, and so forth.

Now, my point thus far has been that your followers want to see your stuff – but that’s not the only reason you should feel comfortable promoting your work. It’s your work. You made it. You spent time and energy and effort on it. You should be comfortable putting that out there. And if you’re not comfortable, it’s good fucking practice.

I know we’ve all been told that it’s bad to want attention – especially the women and teenage girls among us – but when it comes to your professional life, especially if you intend to go down a less-than-conventional path, asking for attention is sort of a necessity. It’s how you get feedback from people who are more experienced than you; it’s how you get mentorship; it’s how you get someone to see you and give you a chance.

So yeah – reblog your drawing or your story or your graphic or your playlist one more time. Your followers want to see. But more importantly, it’s good practice.

vicewings  asked:

How do the fae in Elsewhere University feel about visual arts/ graphic design students? Do they like a nice visual story?

Depends on the individual but yeah, I’d imagine a lot of them might! I was talking with someone earlier about the value placed on art - art students probably get commissions for personalized decks of cards fairy frequently, and once in a while someone without a face will demand a weird weird thing like ‘paint me the spirit of a willow tree) and you just gotta do your best. You’ll be paid handsomely if they like it, somehow. You really, really hope they like it.

And storytelling itself has such long roots of its own importance. I imagine when paired with art that only increases.

(the Fae are less fond of artists who are very realistic, and artists who draw things they shouldn’t see in the first place. be wary.)

I hope BTS will keep the meaning of bangtan soyeondan and not change it to an English meaning like beyond the scene :""(( I think they should be proud of being Korean..... I love BTS no matter what but I hope they won't need to compromise their name and what they stand for...

lmao no ;; the video title itself has 방탄소년단, ‘beyond the scene’ is just something they came up with and matched the group name initials

Anonymous said: right!!! my dad’s a graphic designer and like,,, this is such a smart good and professional move their part!! i understand the nostalgia of the old one but it didn’t rly say “professional innovative artists breaking down language and cultural barriers thru the power of music and visual storytelling” so yeah… #embracetheminimalism (also bts and army are now more connected through their branding,,, they rly goddamn love us ;w;)

i was talking to my brother (who i think i’m just gonna start calling ‘wasp’ online or something, this is getting tedious) about sammy lawrence’s new uhhhh look, and i was like, what do i do about the mask? since the cult members wear the bendy masks, but sammy’s the leader and also like, pretty pissed at bendy in a personal sense lol but bendy is still sort of the figurehead for this religion he’s got going, and he was like, “well maybe it would look like inkmonster!bendy like an upgrade” and i was like “this is why i’m always consulting you, you genius”

so after a lot of doodling this is the best i got, i’m not completely sure i’m satisfied with it, i wanted to do something more ornate? but it didn’t look right. i keep picturing man ray in my head… & clearly i don’t mean THE DADAIST ARTIST, geez… i don’t understand how so few graphic design students ever watched spongebob…

anyway, the thing about the cult is that it’s… a lot less bendy-focused. like i said he’s still the figurehead, the face of the cult, but it’s definitely much more about worshiping the ink itself. the cult members wearing bendy masks are more like a homage to what bendy represents to them - it’s not about imitating the actual real life bendy anymore, it’s like wearing a symbol rather than a face. BUT inkmonster!bendy is still very much a subject of worship. since, when he’s like that, he (appears to) represent everything they worship about the ink. it’s magic, chaos and power. the fact that he doesn’t exactly speak when he’s in that form helps.

they kinda think that’s when bendy is like, his true self. they’re not exactly swamping around the little bendy we all know and love because they see him as being contained, or even hiding, what he really is. which i guess is true, depending on how you look at it. so sammy wearing a revised bendy mask is representative of his revised faith… and rejuvenated ego, haha.

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2

The journey to Darinthall proper takes hours, the castle and city itself perched high above its villages and tucked into the mountainous terrain of Fulgur Montis. Not long after your conversation died, Baekhyun shut his eyes and rested his head against the plush fabric of the seat. It is unlikely he is truly asleep, the terrain unfavorable for full body relaxation and, often, light grunts of displeasure emerge from his chest as his head is jostled, but you rather assume he simply does not want to engage with you. Not anymore.

[REVIEW] EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUYING
CUBE I7 STYLUS

Cube i7 Stylus is a 10” Windows 10 tablet that I just bought for portable light sketching and painting purpose. It’s affordable with the price tag of $300. There are many things I like about this product while it has MANY, MAJOR FLAWS. Here I will report everything I discovered so far.

1) DISPLAY

  • IPS type panel with wide view angle. Standard-gamut with horrible color space coverage of 67% sRGB, 46% AdobeRGB. Cuts off around the far ends of green, blue, purple and red areas. Not so much for yellow and orange.
  • Very bright backlight. 400cd/m^2 at max. No flicker at low brightness level. 120 cd/m^2 is at about 30%.
  • White point 6600K, decent but still cooler than ideal.
  • Tone Response Curves look very good. Almost dead straight.
  • Average deltaE is merely 0.17. This is kinda amazing, it explains the straight TRC performance described above. Despite its small color space coverage, whatever it can display, it displays them super accurately. You don’t really need to calibrate it. As a result, it produces not rich, but very clean color, leaving me the impression of Microsoft Surface Pro 4, even though the SP4s have nearly perfect screens. You might want to be careful not to use extremely saturated color when drawing, because it cannot reflect those.
  • It’s glossy, super reflective!

2) PEN & TOUCH

  • Wacom Penabled display. The same technology of the old Cintiq line. Compatible with a zoo of weird pens!
  • Original stylus has 1 side switch. I use my Cintiq 18SX’s 2 switch stylus (THE BEST OF ALL. Model: UP911E-02DD, available on Amazon.).
  • Original stylus has 1024 level pressure sensitivity. My trusty 18SX stylus has 512, but you won’t tell the differences. They both worked well enough.
  • The display surface is a bit slippery. Use Wacom felt pen nibs to increase friction.
  • Fujitsu 10 point touchscreen. Works better after the removal of the included screen protector sheet (it has bubbles under it -_-). It doesn’t cooperate with Wacom’s stylus – no hard-wired palm rejection. Windows 10 can do this for you – search in Cortana for “Pen Settings”, check “Ignore touch input when I’m using my pen”. To turn it off completely, in Device Manager, disable “HID-compliant touch screen”.
  • GNU/Linux wise, under Ubuntu 16.04.1, 1 of 2 side switches of my 18SX stylus would not function. No dice with xsetwacom and xinput. When stylus and touch both activated at the same time system locks up for a while. I’ve reported this to linuxwacom project.

3) SPEED & STORAGE

  • It call itself i7, but it’s a dirty trick. It actually has Core m3-6Y30, 4GB RAM, HD Graphics 515. I feel no slowdown at all when drawing an A3 300dpi picture in Krita.
  • Foresee 64GB M.2 SSD. It reads like a rabbit and writes like a turtle. Boots up system in a flash, but when Windows 10 is undoing updating itself, you can feel that writing queue is lining up straight to Uranus.
  • Has a MicroSD card slot. Storage space is not an issue.

4) OTHER STUFF

  • 3 hours + under stress running time, at 30% brightness level (120cd/m^2). Lasts forever when browsing webpages. Gets red hot when you are both charging and running 3Dmarks9000 on it.
  • Power adapter not included in the official package list. At least not in China where its produced. Some 3rd party distributors includes one though. DC 12V 3.5x1.35mm jack. Good luck finding that! In China you must give them 5/5 and put up photos on the distributor’s online shop to get an adapter. I scavenged an adapter from a dead router and gave them 2/5. Bastards. (When I was writing this report, they phoned me about sending me one for free anyway.)
  • 1 USB Type-C connector. You may charge it through this connector, but your charger must have 5V2A standard USB power output to do that. QuickCharge(QC) devices and alike are not guaranteed to charge it unless their non-QC, conventional mode can output 2A. Also, it seems to charge only when you plug it in after the machine is booted into the system. If you connect its USB-C before turning it on, it might not boot. USB-C connect does not support startup disk.
  • No documents, no tech support, no drivers on website Not even on the Chinese version. They are serious about national equality here. No. Quickstart Guide does not count as a legit piece of document. The Recovery ISO is hosted on a 3rd party, Chinese equivalent of dropbox as a dodgy .rar file like a p0rn video. Very unprofessional. If you are going to install Windows anew, you’ll need to find your own drivers. (Search for: Intel Driver Update Utility / Wacom Feel Driver / Realtek High Definition Audio Driver)
  • The keyboard is detachable. In tablet mode it feels very light weight to be hold in one hand. Unlike Cintiq 13HD, this one I can use for a long time without having sore in my arms. The keyboard itself is very well made too. The whole frame is cut out from a piece of metal, probably steel. No squeaking sound. Super steady. Very heavy. Holds up the screen nicely. Definitely one of the best in this size.
  • Touch pad has major usability issues. Instead of using software to handle the gestures, it seems to embed the gesture recognition in the hardware and send out keyboard signals when it thinks your movement is a gesture. Very easy to misfire commands like minimize all windows, zoom, swipe and task view. There is no way you can turn it off. Just don’t let your fingers go near its edge.
  • The earphone jack packs a punch. The audio chip is the infamous Realtek ALC283. This crap has no right to drive my Etymotic ER4B loud (you monster!). But it did! At only 25% of the volume, too! Did they bother to put an amp chip in it? It sounds quite musical for a cheap tablet, too! I have to write about this. What a strange breed of product we got here. XD
  • Has 2 cameras, each on both sides. The sensors are OV2680 and OV5648, controlled by intel Imaging Signal Processor 2500. They are absolutely crap. You got nothing but noises. Probably not good enough to provide evidence of a crime scene. :P
  • Audio jack and power adapter jack look exactly the same. I often plug the power adapter connector into the audio jack. Although it doesn’t bring any danger because of the structure, it still makes me like an idiot.

Wow what a piece of crap! But at the end of the day, it’s better than nothing! XD”

Just joking. Despite all those problems, I still love this product. It’s very well built and doesn’t feel cheap at all. Nothing top-notch but all good enough for my target purpose - portable sketching. At the price of $300, I consider my money well spent.

But still, I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT FOR NON-TECH ARTISTS. You must know how to deal with its atrocities. Otherwise, YOU GONNA HAVE A BAD TIME, KID.

The Perfect Night (A Choices Fanfic)

Pairing: Liam x MC (Riley)

Genre: Heavy fluff with some NSFW thoughts sprinkled in (nothing graphic)

Summary: Liam and Riley come home on the night of their wedding.

Author’s note: Thematically, this feels like three short pieces put together, so please excuse if it feels a little choppy. One idea just led to another and this kinda wrote itself. :) Enjoy!

“Oh that feels so good!” Riley sighed as her feet touched the carpeted floor. In one hand, she held her five-inch heels by the straps while the other clutched onto Liam’s arm for support.

“Remind me again why I wear these when no one can see them under these layers of chiffon anyway?” she asked rhetorically, poofing out the sides of her wedding gown for effect.

They were walking down the hallway towards their bedroom slowly, savoring the first moment of peace they got after the night’s festivities. To say they were exhausted would be an understatement. Between planning the wedding and running the kingdom, it had been an eventful couple of months, but fatigue didn’t even enter Liam’s mind as he watched his wife fidget around her wedding dress, a contented smile on his lips.

“Sounds like someone’s asking for a foot massage tonight.”

Riley pulled him closer and rested her head on his arm. “Oh, I want that and more, Mr. Liam Rys.”

He laughed. “Someone’s feeling greedy tonight…”

"Only because I can.“ He didn’t miss the devilish glint in her eye as she whispered in his ear. "After all, you’re mine now.”

Oh the things this woman does to him.

He pulled her close, capturing her lips in a slow and passionate kiss.

"How did I get so lucky?“ he smiled after, beaming at the woman he now called his wife.

Riley took his hand and gave it a squeeze. "C'mon. I know one way you’re gonna get much luckier tonight.”

Liam’s lips were all over her before Riley could even close the bedroom door. He guided her against a wall and held both of her hands above her head as his lips trailed down her neck.

“Liam, wait—“ she managed to say in between sighs. "I prepared a surprise for you.”

He raised his head from her collarbone, his eyes alight with curiosity. “What kind of surprise?”

She couldn’t help but laugh a little. He looked adorable, she thought. “It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you now, would it?”

She guided him towards the bed, and had him sit down on it, her hands on each side of his shoulder. His hands rested on her waist.

“Now, you just sit here for a while,” she instructed. “And I will be right back.”

Liam tightened his hold on her, a wide grin on his face. “What if I don’t want to let go?”

"Trust me, you’ll like this.“ She caressed the side of his face gently. "I want this night to be perfect.”

She gave him one last kiss, lingering for seconds longer than she planned before disappearing behind the bathroom door.

When Leo’s wife had told her that they left their wedding gift for them in their bedroom dresser, she knew it was gonna be lingerie. What she didn’t expect was how risque it was.

"It’s something my sisters had gotten me the night Leo and I got engaged,“ she had said with a teasing smile.

Leo even threw in a wink for good measure. "My brother’s gonna love it.”

It was red, lacy, and left almost nothing to the imagination.

Man, those two have got their kinks, she thought.

She gave herself one last look in the mirror, and nodded approvingly, as if giving herself a pep talk. As she put on her silk robe, she began imagining the look on Liam’s face when he sees what she’s wearing underneath, how his eyes will fill with desire, how his teeth will rip the flimsy material off her body.

She shivered at the thought.

Okay, Riley. This is gonna be perfect.

What greeted her when she opened the bathroom door was not what she was expecting though.

But it brought a smile to her face nonetheless.

There on one side of the bed was her handsome husband, who seemed to have fallen asleep while waiting for her.

On any other occasion, she would have taken offense, but she knew how much he’d been straining himself lately. What with the wedding and the coronation, and just the welfare of the entire kingdom really, it was enough to drive one man crazy. But Liam had never complained. He had been present in every wedding planning meeting, every fitting, every little event – he had been by her side, always.

She tightened the robe around her and slid in next to him, careful not to wake him up. A loving smile formed on her lips as her fingers traced the side of his face lightly.

Yup. This is perfect.

Liam stirred in his sleep, his eyes adjusting to the dim lighting in the room. A surge of panic rushed through him.

How long have I been asleep? Wasn’t I just waiting for Riley to finish? How could I have fallen asleep so quickly? And tonight of all times!

“Shit!” he hissed too loudly.

That’s when he realized his wife had snuggled up next to him, her hand resting on his chest. He was filled with another pang of guilt when he saw she had woken up at the sound of his voice.

She looked up at him, eyes hazy from sleep. “Hey.”

Liam felt his worries melt away at the sight of her smiling at him. She had that effect on him.

“Hi.” He brought his free hand to her face, his thumb stroking at her jaw ever so slightly. “I can’t believe I fell asleep. I’m sorry.”

She chuckled lightly. “It’s okay. You can make up for it tomorrow.”

“Yeah? I’d like that.”

She snuggled closer to him, and he felt her smile against his chest.

He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. “I love you, Riley. More than words can say.”

She pressed a kiss to his chest in return. “I love you too, Liam.”

They both drifted off to sleep once more, contented smiles on their lips, thinking, nothing could be more perfect than this.

Here’s me throwing a little appreciation to everyone who makes my time on this website for dumdums worthwhile! I wanted to do something a little different instead of just listing all my favs, so i’ve written just a little blurb to thank you for making me so happy <3 I hope you all manage to find your tag lol this got a bit long (might have to do a cheeky command+f heh) compliments / blurbs under the cut!!

I’M SCREAMING

We’re 3 months away from this glitter-bomb and they gave us some stuff to scream about. I think I’ll do just that. I took my sweet time putting this together, I know, but there’s a fair bit to unpack and a lot to be excited about so, let’s go through it all!

Animation

Okay, so first things first: people are calling this a 2D movie and that’s not really that accurate.

It certainly has some 2D elements, like the backgrounds, but the style of animation only makes the characters look 2D, when in fact they’re 3D models.

You can tell in how they move. If I were to give you a still screen shot, you might guess that it was from a 2D animation, but in motion, you can tell what it actually is: cel-shading.

I had a hunch that’s what it was so I asked a storyboarder who worked on the MLP movie (and the show) if I was right and she said:

The program they’re using is ToonBoom, which does rigs with 2D toon shaders, among other things!

You know, I don’t often call things, but I fucking called it. Let me have this. Just to give you a quick definition from Wikipedia:

“Cel shading or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make 3-D computer graphics appear to be flat by using less shading color instead of a shade gradient or tints and shades.”

3-dimensional figure with cel shading, has the effect of making it  look 2D. Typically seen with thick outlines on the outside and little to no outlines on the inside:

(Team Fortress 2 itself isn’t normally cel shaded, but that’s a great example a fan made of what cel shading usually looked like when I was growing up)

Cel shading without outlines, as seen in Wind Waker.

  • Like I said, just seeing this still image, it looks 2D, but watching it move, you can tell there’s a 3rd dimension to the character with the features and lineart mapped out onto the models to make it look 2D
  • Which by the way, is really unique for a major release! I don’t know about anyone else, but I was excited that MLP: The Movie seemed to be 2-D since there hasn’t been a domestic 2-D animated movie since Winnie the Pooh in 2011. 6 damn years! While I maybe would’ve ideally liked a completely 2-D animated movie, the backgrounds and the cel shading works in really neat ways, and it will definitely make the movie stand out
  • The purely 3-D objects seem unfinished at the moment (but that’s not out of the ordinary, CGI seems to be one of the last processes). It needs texture or shading or something, and I can tell because most of the ship looks too soft (too much like a model) to be metal. I really think this will be fixed for the final product, but that’s probably the most jarring part of the style at the moment
  • Not all of the 3-D looks unfinished, but the best looking parts are still the painterly, 2-D stuff (look at those towers; they’re really stylized, but you can tell they’re 3D in a more 2D environment)
  • THAT DIGITALLY PAINTED VERSION OF CANTERLOT THOUGH:
  • The light effects are definitely 3-D in the fireworks and rainboom
  • Oh, and speaking lighting, so much of it looks so pretty! There are one or two times when the colours are slightly off, but the majority of the time it looks freaking gorgeous
  • You can kinda see by looking at Rarity that the shading is juuust slightly off here (kinda like they were for the teaser trailer), but then you look in the background and see this BEAUTIFUL background and Twilight all upset and worried about this invasion, and it feels like such a nitpick to worry about what will probably still be cleaned up before it hits theaters
  • We also get some really great expressions, so they’re not really limited by the 3D models underneath (if I’m right about that)
  • Also, just as one last little note here, the style is detailed enough to see little things about the characters we didn’t know up until now, like the fact that the spines on the side of Spike’s head are translucent, or that the colours of RD’s mane aren’t 100% perfectly separated
  • Overall with the animation, I’m so impressed not only by how gorgeous it is,but by how willing they were to take a risk and incorporate a 3D element in the form of  (I think) cel-shading. This only really matches the creative spirit of the MLP team, though. Whether or not you agree on how well they always execute everything, they always try to step up their game with every new season and push themselves to be and do better.
  • And while I will say that if some of the more 3D parts (yeah, I’m talking about the zeppelin/airships mostly) aren’t fixed for the final release, I would have a bone to pick with them, but I have faith that we’ll be seeing a much smoother integration of that 3D on the big screen.

Story and Character Details

I really appreciate that they didn’t outright spoil anything too big. It’s definitely a well-cut trailer! We basically only know about the same information we did before, with just a hint or two as to things like who the true villain is.

  • Just based on the focus given to these characters in the trailer (and what I know of the Storm King’s characterization in the first Movie Prequel comic that was just released), seems like he’s not as big of a threat as the commander of his fleet, Tempest.
  • It’s a kind of villain we haven’t seen on the show or even in EQG, and not only that, but
  • She’s got a fantastic voice actress behind her, so she can pull off the deliciously evil vibe well without, say, reminding us too much of Chrysalis or other powerful animated villains from Disney classics
  • Plus her design with the broken horn and her magic sparking up out of it is instantly intriguing to me: for such a powerful presence, it’s awesome to see her weakness (and most likely shady past) is always on display—especially for a commander character, that’s just really cool
  • Grubber seems to be pretty standard so far, nothing he’s done has really impressed me quite yet, but I’m hoping his best stuff is saved for the movie itself
  • The sky pirates (or skyrates) look like a lot of fun, and in context I can see how well the bipedal birb pirate blends with the universe (the bipedal designs were the ones I had the most trouble with)
  • On top of that, we have sea ponies at last! And they’re far more adorable than I ever could’ve hoped
  • The original sea pony designs from G1 looked a lot more like sea horses, with curling tails and fins on either side, but I think the meraid-ish look is both more marketable for Hasbro and more appealing to look at (the original sea ponies always seemed like a joke in the fandom to me, I admittedly never understood why people would actually want it in G4)
  • And a-ha! Good queens do exist! Poor Celestia and Luna. Always a princess, never a queen.
  • Oh, and Seaquestria? It’s freakin’ beautiful. I LOVE the rich blues and purples here. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the 360 image of the underwater palace complete with an excellent piece of background music, treat yourself.
  • The Mane 6′s sea pony designs are pretty dang adorable. I don’t have anything interesting to say, I just like the cute water horses, okay?

Minor Details and Incidentals

I’ll start out by saying Twilight’s narration in the trailer is pretty standard, but still heartwarming (mostly because I already know and love these characters though). It sort of reminds me of the bits of narration from the How to Train Your Dragon movies, although those had a bit more character to them.

The what could possible go wrong? line, though. It just makes me laugh thinking of all the flashbacks we could have to the series.

I guess she’s talking about that festival specifically that she’s organizing, and in that way it’s a show of character development (in a similar way to the character development on display in A Flurry of Emotions, where Twilight is told she’s late and doesn’t have a panic attack or worry about what could go wrong… too much), but it’s still hilarious to contrast the idea that nothing could go wrong in Equestria to… literally all of the show.

  • AJ and RD protecting their friends even before the others have gotten over the shock of whatever they’re seeing tho
  • Starlight and Trixie get a bit of screen-time together and it’s adorable. Starlight might be stuck in Canterlot for the duration of the adventure, but I’m glad to see her included. Characters like Discord who might be too hard to explain to new audiences are understandable losses, but even if Starlight’s cameo is brief, it’s good to see her role acknowledged
  • In terms of music, Sia’s looking adorable so far, and Lukas Graham’s as of yet unreleased Off to See the World sounds pretty catchy (it’s the song at the end of the trailer), so they’ve got talent behind the vocals!
  • Jumping back to little details, it’s neat how sea pony magic has a very distinct look from unicorn/alicorn magic. Also, the bubbles are really cute
  • And, okay, I just wanted to take a minute to appreciate how serious this ponk is. Can we all just stop and take a look, because in this scene Twilight’s saying how she’s the one Tempest is after, and she should probably face this alone, which seems to be our Princess of Friendship’s big dilemma in this movie, and Pinkie’s clearly trying to tell her she’s crazy
  • Gotta love that they didn’t just go for hyperactive comic relief Pinkie Pie; they don’t seem to be boiling down these characters to just one trait (which is partially why I loved the moment where RD and AJ defend the girls; RD’s ego will no doubt be on display throughout the movie, but you’ll also see she’s ready to lay down her life for her friends)
  • And hey, lookie here! Canterlot got a make-over… and a contractor. There’s more pink than there typically is and it doesn’t necessarily match what we’ve seen of it in the show. Especially places like the throne room:
  • And you know, I’m a little torn on this detail? It’s beautiful, and I’m digging the starry night mosiac they’ve got going on back there, but it would’ve been nice to see the throne room we know and love rendered in this new style, you know? I’m gonna miss the deep magentas and the stain glass windows of the Mane 6′s accomplishments. I know that’s mostly the fangirl in me, but I like seeing continuity nods back to the show (like hey look: Cadence gets a cameo!)
  • Unless Canterlot gets destroyed and subsequently rebuilt in the season 7 finale, in which case I’ll shut my mouth
  • Speaking of which, I still have to wonder exactly when this will take place in the series, or if it exists slightly to the left of canon like the Equestria Girls movies (which, I mean, I consider canon, but still). I know there’s ties into the comics, but I wonder if/when the show will acknowledge the events of the movie… I guess only time will tell

And for now, I think that about wraps it up! All in all, I’m beyond excited to see this thing, as anyone could’ve guessed.

It should also be noted that a lot of kids movie trailers focus on the fun, comedic portions of the movie, so while I do think it’s mostly going to feel like this, I’m also looking forward to the more character-driven feelsy parts. As we well know, you can never get the full scope of a movie from just the trailer, but it’s usually especially true for kids movies.

Even just from what we have seen, it looks like we’re in for a ride. Can’t wait to get on.

Year of the Pony

Yuri on Ice Polyship Week

Please note the dates have been changed to June 19th-25th.

Hey, everyone! Like many of you out there in Tumblrland, I’ve developed a small Yuri on Ice obsession as of late. I’ve really been enjoying the various character/ship weeks that are happening, and I wanted to try my hand at one. After looking at the schedule on @yoievents, I didn’t see anything shining a light on polyships, so that’s what I decided to do.

I must admit that I’ve never run an event like this before, so I’m following the lead of everyone else. Feel free to send in tips/advice if you like. :) (Also I have approximately -10 graphics skills, so if someone felt the urge to step forward and slap something together for a better banner or maybe a prompts graphic once we have them, that would be the actual best.)

As for the week itself, all types of fanworks will be accepted as long as they relate to polyshipping in some way. Ratings, ships, etc, are all up to the creators.

Here’s a tentative schedule; let me know if something on it doesn’t work for you guys.

Through May 14th – accepting prompts

May 15th – 28th – prompt voting (I’m shooting for two prompts/day to give people a variety)

May 29th – final prompts reveled

June 19th – 25th – YOI Polyship Week

So, yeah, you can start sending in prompts now! Anything goes – particular AUS, genres, quotes, general prompts, etc, etc, whatever inspires you or might inspire someone else. And please share this post so other people can find out about the week. <3

I’m looking forward to this adventure. :) ~your mod @wedge-antilles-feelings
