Guillermo del Toro's highly personal monster film 'The Shape of Water' speaks to 'what I feel as an immigrant'
Director Guillermo del Toro speaks about his latest movie, "The Shape of Water," one of the breakout films of the Telluride Film Festival.
By Josh Rottenberg

Obviously the world has changed dramatically since you were shooting this film. I can’t imagine you could anticipate the way those themes would resonate …

I did. And the reason why is that I’m Mexican. I’ve been going through immigration all my life, and I’ve been stopped for traffic violations by cops and they get much more curious about me than the regular guy. The moment they hear my accent, things get a little deeper.

I know it sounds kind of glib, but honestly, what we are living I saw brewing through the Obama era and the Clinton era. It was there. The fact that we got diagnosed with a tumor doesn’t mean the cancer started now.

Hopefully one of the things the movie shows is that from 1962 to now, we’ve taken baby steps — and a lot of them not everyone takes. The thing that is inherent in social control is fear. The way they control a population is by pointing at somebody else — whether they’re gay, Mexican, Jewish, black — and saying, “They are different than you. They’re the reason you’re in the shape you’re in. You’re not responsible.” And when they exonerate you through vilifying and demonizing someone else, they control you.

I think the movie says that there are so many more reasons to love than to hate. I know you sound a lot smarter when you’re skeptical and a cynic, but I don’t care.

But you’re not on a mission to change the way people see genre?

No, I can’t. I know that what I saw when I was a kid had redemptive powers. Some people find Jesus. I found Frankenstein. And the reason I’m alive and articulate and semi-sane is monsters. It’s not an affectation. It’s completely spiritually real to me. And I’m not going to change.

Utopias

While we would live separated into Sun signs, everyone is welcome to come and go, to pass by, to be welcomed, to stay over, to visit. If I’m going to dream, I’m going to dream that life would be peaceful at least, joyful at most.

Aries: Rocky and volcanic, a heaviness to the air. Everyone moves with urgency, with energy, with inspiration. There are dragons, friendly but fierce, creatures straight from the pages of fantasy novels. Competition is encouraged, but so is being protective, the merging of strength with something warm.

Taurus: Green, forests, streams, flowers, trees that seem to communicate and break away, that move should you look away for too long. People live in cottages, sweet smelling cakes filling the air in the days, amber and musk at night. Everyone who passes through is well fed and looked after. Leisure is considered a virtue here.

Gemini: Bright and colourful paths to follow, interweaving routes that lead to places undiscovered. The weather changes as they do. Shows are put on, laughter and giggles the soundtrack, and no day is the same. Everyone greets those that pass through, a conversation the key to affection. Libraries fill rooms Beauty and the beast style.

Cancer: Lagoons, beaches, caves to hide out in, pretty with glistening gems and rocks, places to reflect, to see the water move where the mermaids swim. There is time out for every emotion, every sensation to be realised, to be validated, and sitting and dreaming is the perfect way to pass time. Loved ones are kept close. There is power to the sound of the ocean.

Leo: Glamorous and built up, high buildings and fashionable aesthetics, modern, like a city but with quiet corners. Shows and films flash all day, free entry of course, and comfort and luxury is abundant. No one is considered too loud or enthusiastic, the more the merrier, shame is forbidden. If you are quiet enough however you can hear the bellowing lions roar in the distance, protective.

Virgo: Modest towns, green, but practical, everything you need at least once over is accessible. Little critters hop around. People greet each other with a slight nod of the head, a smile, then on their way to learn, to lend a hand, yet at the end of the day they meet each other, even if not much is said. At night, there is quiet to fall into fantasy, to create, to show a touch of genius.

Libra: Open spaces and airy, mountainous, a place to breathe, to balance, to think. The wind makes their hair dance. Houses seem balanced on the edges, views to envy. There are rooms like studios, a place for controlled messiness, for the creativity of Venus to express, yet the rest of the housing is immaculately designed. Most live in pairs, yet the wider community is also cherished.

Scorpio: Beautiful Gothic designs, castles and ruins, yet light seems to dance. Privacy is respected, but so is connection, and inauthenticity sticks out like a sore thumb here. There are creatures that you cannot quite tell if they are ugly or cute, a duality. Devotion and loyalty are held up as virtues. There is a dark humour here, but also great wisdom.

Sagittarius: Green and open, places to run and tumble, but also places to sit and ponder. A natural prettiness, but not heavily designed, natural, placed by the hands of something higher. Sport and competition is encouraged though not valued more than the mental and spiritual talents that their inhabitants gift to the world. There is a warmth in the air, a free spiritedness, a place to visit for anyone that feels blue.

Capricorn: Built up buildings, a big city, classy and simplistic design. Everyone progresses here, advances, creates personal ambitions along with shared ones. Hard work is a virtue, but so is being supportive and stable, extending a hand to those that need advice and solid method. Everyone walks with an air if dignity, but followed closely by a sarcastic grin and shining smile should someone break the poised pace.

Aquarius: A place of technology, pointing to the future, like a cross between a built up city and a science lab. If cars will one day fly, here will be the place to have them first. Can be overwhelming on a first visit, not knowing how anything works, but the fascination is more than enough compensation. The people here are odd and eccentric, but also speak with such interest and offbeat passion that it is infectious.

Pisces: Misty, iridescent, reflective, one colour seems to blend into another, can be confusing for the senses upon first visiting, but there is a point where it becomes easier to acclimatise. The floor doesn’t feel solid, like you could fall right through, but if you concentrate hard enough, you see the streams pass through, pretty rainbow lights dancing on the water. Everyone walks with a sleepiness here, takes time to gather how they feel.

video game meme  [6/7] sceneries - the legend of zelda: twilight princess

Some call our realm a world of shadows, but that makes it sound so unpleasant… The twilight there holds a serene beauty… You have seen it yourself as the sun sets on this world. Bathed in that light, all the people were pure and gentle… But things changed once that foul power pervaded the world…

The 1 Element Your Flawed Character MUST HAVE

If you’re a reader, you’ve probably experienced this before: you pick up a book, it seems pretty interesting, you nonchalantly decide to read it – “whatever, might be good” – and then …

A paperback explodes life as you know it.

Encountering a book like this can give life sudden clarity, it can change the way you look at the world, it can help you overcome something and grow, it can give you new purpose, it can inspire you to change your life, it can transform your future. By the time you’ve finished that book, it has become a part of your life – and will probably remain that way forever. (*Holds up my battered copy of Narnia as evidence*)

This magical experience is pretty much the ultimate goal for a reader. But if you’re a reader AND a writer, the fulfilling moment is inevitably marred by one depressing thought:

“I’ll never write anything that good.”

To which I say:

I beg to differ, little discouraging voice. With dedication and persistence, anyone can write a story that will be deeply meaningful to a reader.

The trick? It needs to be deeply meaningful to the writer first.

If a writer is going to give a reader a life-altering piece of knowledge, that means the writer already has that knowledge to give. We have all experienced things worthy of a story. We are all characters, journeying through arc after arc, becoming better or worse. From living these stories, we learn and see things more clearly, just as protagonists do. Which means we have something to say, something to write about, something to give.

But to do so, we have to shoot for art.

The word art seems terribly vague, unattainable, and intimidating. But I don’t think it has to be. By “art” I’m going by the definitions given in two of my favorites quotes about writing (writing is art, so these apply):

“Art is born when the temporary touches the eternal.” – G K  Chesterton

and

“…It is an art. It is the best of all possible art, a finite picture of the infinite.” – N D Wilson

Both quotes state the same thing, in different ways. Art is about depicting and communicating something true, something universal, something everlasting about life and humanity, through something tangibly created. A definition which sounds an awful lot like the definition of metaphor: “a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract.” Which sounds a lot like storytelling, because story IS metaphor. It’s life, condensed and magnified, all of its components there for a specific reason – to represent and convey some deeper meaning. So storytelling is naturally suited to being art. Which is good news for writers.

But it can also mean trouble. Storytelling is proven to be one of the most powerful teaching methods there is; a story actually has the power to get into someone’s head and heart and change everything, because to a reader’s mind the events on the page are actually happening. They’re living another life, a life that seeks to prove whatever the author wants to say. So writers have a responsibility to make sure the meaning of their story is true, morally and logically.

BUT HOW DOES THIS ALL RELATE TO THE MAIN CHARACTER?!

Your main character is flawed, both in ways that only hurt themselves, and in ways that hurt others. These flaws are causing them to ruin their own lives. If they don’t awaken to this unwelcome truth about themselves, they will be lost. What happens to them over the course of the story, as they go after their singular goal, is going to apply pressure to these flaws until someone new – and most of the time, better – is made. The journey will teach them something, and that knowledge will enable them to overcome their weaknesses and forge a better life.

And I bet you can guess what that story will teach them. That thing that is deeply meaningful for you, so meaningful you want to share it with readers? Yup, that’s what your main character is going to learn.

It’s going to be the SOLUTION to their inner problems. When it comes to characters, the meaning can be wrestled into three parts, adding up into one concise sentence.

1) To achieve *a better state of being*

2) One must *moral and mental requirement*

3) Or else *the inner stakes*

To see how this works, let’s look at a fairy tale, the most straightforward example of this concept:

Let’s see Cinderella (the live-action 2015 version).

The meaning of the movie is summed up in this scene, and the story seeks to prove it throughout:

“Have courage and be kind… It has power, more than you know. And magic.”

The story revolves around this notion, and everything seeks to represent it and prove it, in true Fairy Tale fashion.

So in one line, that Ella’s arc proves: To achieve victory over abusers, one must hold onto their courage, kindness, and goodness no matter what – or else succumb and turn into someone like them.

Exemplified in her last words to her stepmother, that truly defeat her forevermore:

So! Constructing these sentences can help give our flawed characters a destination to motor towards. Which makes writing their arcs much easier. And maybe we can construct a character arc and story that will become one of those magical reading experiences for a reader. And then, maybe one day, we’ll get letters from our reader, telling us exactly what our stories gave them and how it has saved their life in some small way (or maybe not so small way.)

If finding a book like this is ultimate goal of a reader, I think getting a letter like that is the ultimate goal for a writer.

Well, there’s my motivation. Time to go figure out what the heck I want my book to say.

Harry Styles Vocal Health on SNL

Hello!  So first and foremost I wan to put out there how much I love Harry and his voice.  Dear god it’s SO COOL and unique.  I love how when he’s in good vocal health he has all these different textures to it- the gruffness of his chest voice, the purity of his falsetto, the power of his belt.  When the studio version of SOTT came out I couldn’t sing his praises enough.  His voice sounded SO HEALTHY.  He was making such good choices!!!  Everything was relaxed and well supported.  He let the song build naturally.  He MUST have gotten some solid vocal training over his break because that isn’t something that can just happen over night.  I was very impressed and very proud.  I was also a bit nervous to see if these changes would hold when he started performing live….and…..it looks like I had good reason to be nervous.

Here’s the thing. There are a few reasons I’m so hard on Harry in particular when it comes to poor technique. First, compared to the other guys, his technique is the only one that’s actually physically DAMAGING.  Could the other guys benefit from proper training?  Sure.  Of course.  Every singer can.  Even those who have been singing for years still should train on a regular basis.  But the other boys’ bad habits are just that- bad habits.  They aren’t going to do long term damage, not the way Harry’s are.    The second reason is BECAUSE I know he can do (AND HAS DONE!!!!!) so much better!!   I know he’s CAPABLE of so much more and so yeah, I’m hard on him because of that. And finally, I know exactly what he’s doing physically and exactly what’s going through his mind because I have the same exact bad habits and I can see him using the same exact thought process as to why he slips into these again.

Harry is the Ultimate Performer. He wants nothing more than to put on a good show for everyone, even if that means sacrificing his own vocal health.  Now, that’s isn’t a HUGE problem…until it KEEPS happening.  Which is what happened with OTRA.  And possibly might be happening now, although that remains to be seen.  One performance of one song slips into an entire show of this slips into two shows of this slips into the entire tour and wham, you’ve got nodes.  I think the biggest problem with Harry’s performance last night is he doesn’t trust the material or HIMSELF to sell it the way it is.  He feels he needs to overcompensate and big Big and Bold right from the start and that song is not built to be sung that way.  He started at a level that he couldn’t sustain throughout the entire thing and had nowhere to go.  That’s when he ran into trouble.

As soon as he opened his mouth, I knew it wasn’t going to go well.  Don’t get me wrong, he sounds fantastic in the beginning…but like I said, there was nothing for him to build upon because he already started it at too high a height. His voice sounded raspy to me too, raspier than usual.  That can be caused by a few things- he could have been dehydrated (you can’t sing right if you don’t pee white!), he could have been tired (we know he’s a morning person and that show is pretty late for him), he could have strained his voice at the concert the night before, he could have over rehearsed, he could have smoked a bit.  I don’t know what the cause was, but he didn’t start off the evening in the best vocal health, especially for a song that’s very difficult to sing.  I also think he KNEW that so again, he tried to overcompensate for that by pushing.

There is so much tension throughout his whole body, particular his shoulders on up.  I’m sure a lot of that is due to nerves.  I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again: the SNL stage is one of the hardest venues for artists to play.  There’s something particularly rough about it.  He’s also always had problems tensing up his face when he sings, but it what was particularly striking to me was that he did it during the falsetto parts.  That should have been EASY for him to sing.  That’s something light and relaxed.  Almost a break from the tension of the rest of the song…and yet he looks like he was in pain.  Which makes me wonder if he WAS in pain.  it’s hard to tell, but it almost seems like the second time he does it he pushes it more to a mix than a pure falsetto.

It’s notable to me how relaxed the second syllable of  “bullets” around 2:44-2:48 is compared to the rest.  THAT is what the whole thing should have sounded like.  it’s relaxed and he’s got a great vibratto on it that comes straight from the diaphragm there- compare that to how tight “bullets” are the second time he sings it in that phrase at 2:58ish-3:04.  Why did you change what you were doing, sir??? In fact, to me it seemed like he KNEW it sounded good the first time and did his cute li’l dance and then came back to it feeling like “yeah I got this…” and then tightened right back up again.  because he didn’t trust himself.

Thennnnnn the bridge happens.  And this is what i mean by he had nowhere to go.  THIS should have been his first belt it out moment.  but he pushed too hard too quickly and his voice just…wasn’t there.  It was tired.  The first scoop up to the first “we” was off key because of it and I think he knew it which made it even worse and MORE tense to the point where he just didn’t have the vocal agility to flip into his fasletto again for “learn”.  And then we’ve got the “it’s just what we know” which was just a poor choice.  I have a feeling he nailed that MULTIPLE times in rehearsals and mannnnn if he was in good vocal health how killer would that have sounded!??!!?  But instead, we got what’s called harmonic distortion which is SUPER VERY YIKESY AND A BIG SIGN OF HOLYSHITYOU’REDOINGDAMAGE (i sincerely hope he has an appointment with an ENT this week and gets scoped to check that out).   This was another instance of him trying to put on a great show and overcompensate for what he probably felt was lackluster vocals (which for the record WERE NOT THAT BAD.  I’m picking it apart because…well, it’s what I do.  and i don’t think I would have had too much of a problem if it weren’t for the super damaging choices he ended up making).

From there he’s thinking “Oh shit that was bad…I REALLY fucked up…better step up my game and make the end better!” and once again tries to overcompensate and push a voice that’s already been pushed to the brink.  there just wasn’t more in there for it to give.  He couldn’t sustain it.  He had already given everything that there was go to give.

When it comes to ESNY, it was a much better performance.  I think it’s partially due to the fact that it’s an easier song to sing and partially due to the fact that he was playing guitar so he wasn’t as much in his head (Side note: CAN YOU BELIEVE HE FINALLY BLESSED US WITH HIS GUITAR SKILLS?????).  His belty part towards the end wasn’t as good as it could have been, but I think that’s just due to the fact that his voice was kinda shot and that’s the best it was going to be.  It wasn’t TERRIBLE and obviously it could have been better, but I am curious to hear the studio version to see if there’s more belting that he just wasn’t comfortable with last night.  I could have done without the facial affectations because it just adds more tension and tension is bad, kiddos  But I think it’s a stylistic choice and I’m trying to pick my battles here.  Additionally, as we’ve seen in gif form his li’l neck vein was popping out so yeah he was tensing up pretty good there…but again, it wasn’t as terrible as it could have been since the song itself isn’t as taxing vocally.

All in all, the performances were great, especially if you’re not as picky as I am. I know this was his first time singing live in well over a year and SNL is high stress and it’s his first time out there ALONE.  I’m curious to see what happens on Graham Norton and if he improves his technique. I’m also really curious to see how he’ll be on tour as well. I do wonder if he’ll lower the key of SOTT so it’s not as taxing.  No one would really notice and it would make things a little easier on him. It’s just frustrating because I know he has it in him to do it well.  We’ve HEARD him do it well.  But he just doesn’t trust himself enough to do that and that kind of breaks my heart a little.  Thankfully, he’s young and has time to learn.  He can still break these habits and make new, healthier ones and learn to trust himself more.

BUDDY.  YOU GOT THIS.  YOU HAVE AN AMAZING VOICE.  YOU ARE A FANTASTIC SONGWRITER.  YOU HAVE GREAT TECHNIQUE WHEN YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT.  YOU ARE A KILLER SHOWMAN WITH A TON OF CHARISMA.  PLEASE TRUST THESE THINGS AND STOP PUSHING YOURSELF BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU DAMAGE ANYTHING.

Blurred Vision

Lance usually loved picture day, as a self proclaimed pretty boy it really was his time to shine.
That would be if he hadn’t of loses his contacts that morning and the only glasses he had were a pair of thick black wide frames that made him look like someone dressing up as a dork for Halloween.
He never used to mind wearing glasses, but after he started high school, other people latched onto somthing to tease him about and well… there’s only so many times you can come back and find bi-eyes written across your locker before enough enough.

Lance had hoped to never have to go to school wearing his glasses again, however since he was legally blind without them he didn’t really have much choice.

————-
“McClain!” Iverson Lance’s hated home room teacher yelled as Lance slipped into the class room “your late!”
“Yeah I had to-”
“No excuses! March to the principles office and hand over those joke glasses this instant!”
Before Lance could protest Iverson had grabbed his glasses and shoved him into the hallway locking the door behind him.
Lance half wanted to just hammer on the door until he was let back in but he was already on thin ice with Iverson… he didn’t need an excuse to be expelled.
Lance sighed as he squinted trying to see to no avail.
“Ok… come on Lancy Lance, you’ve walked down this hallway a million times, you could do it blind folded.” He mumbled to himself as he slowly made his way down the hall.
For a little while everything was going fine, Lance even held his head up high thinking he could do this!
That was until he walked right into someone sending whoever they were flying and Lance stumbling back.
“WHAT THE HELL MY COMPUTER!”
Lance cringed he knew that voice.
It belonged to the scary smart Pidge.
They had joined the school a couple months ago and already had a reputation for ruining the lives of anyone that crossed them.
And Lance had just judging from the blurred pieces on the floor, that their precious computer had been broken.
“Oh… man I’m so sorry.”
“You will be!” Pidge yelled standing up and poking Lance in the chest.
“You think you can purposely bump into me and get away with it!”
Wait…
Oh no they thought it was on purpose!
“H-hang on a second! It was an accident!”
“Please, you were looking right at me!”
Lance felt his heat beat speed up and he took a couple steps back.
“I didn’t see you I swear!”
“Yeah sure you didn’t! I know your type, pretty rich boy who’s had everything handed to him on a silver platter! Well I won’t let you push me around!” Pidge sounded so angry but also a note of pain to their voice…
Had they been bullied too in the past?
“I really didn’t see you!” Lance tried but he doubted they believed him.
He was finding it hard to breath as the familiar sensation of a panic attack came on.
He had to get out of here.
Lance spin on his heals and started to run, he couldn’t see where he was going but at the time he didn’t care.
“LOOK OUT!”
Lance turned his head in the direction of Pidge’s voice as his feet slipped out from under him and the last thing he rembered was staring up at the blurry ceiling and cursing himself for forgetting about the stairs, before suddenly their was pain… then nothing.
———————-

Lance woke up to someone slipping something into his face.
He couldn’t figure out what it was, his whole body felt heavy and like his mind was disconnected from his body.
Lance forced his eyes open only to wince at the intense light above him.
The first thing he noticed was that he wasn’t looking at his bedroom ceiling, also that he could actually see.
Suddenly as Lance tried to move an intense pain throbbing throughout his whole body became known.
He groaned but continued to try and sit up.
“Your awake!”
Lance made a small noise of pain as he moved to look at Pidge a little surprised to see them sitting at the edge of his bed looking worried.
“Y-yeah… what happened?” He asked rubbing his head only to find it bandaged.
“You… you fell down two flights of stairs. Got a pretty bad concussion and maybe a broken rib or two. An ambulance is on its way.” Pidge looked down looking at their hands.
Lance couldn’t understand why he could see then he realised someone must of gotten his glasses…
Was it Pidge.
“I’m sorry.” Lance smiled as he sat up in the bed wincing at the protest from his ribs.
“What! Why?” Pidge asked.
“Broke your computer.” Lance shrugged.
When did he get so tired?
Pidge sighed running a hand through her short messy hair “it wasn’t your fault… I checked out your prescription. Man it’s no wonder you bumped into me. Your like super blind.”
Lance cringed “yeah… still sorry though. Please don’t… don’t hack in and use ‘puter powers to ruin my life.” Lance slurred finding it harder and harder to keep his eyes open.
“Hu?… oh that” Pidge chuckled “they wouldn’t stop misgendering even after I told them I’m gender neutral. I only changed their grades back from what they payed me to do.”
“Oh…”
“Guess we both misjudged eachother?”
“Guess so.” Lance smiled wondering why the world was getting blurry if he was still wearing his glasses.
“Lance?”
Pidge’s voice sounded distant and muffled like he was underwater.
He saw their eyes widen in horror as Lance slumped backwards.
He could see her yelling and a group of people came running in wearing green uniforms pulling a what Lance thought looked like a bed on wheels.
That was a funny thought.
Lance was sure he had only blinked.
But when he opened his eyes again he was lying in a hospital bed with Hunk standing over him.
“Hunk?”
“Oh thanks god Lance!” Hunk yelled hugging him causing Lance to cry out in pain.
“Ribs buddy, ribs!”
Hunk let go sheepishly “sorry… but when I got a call from your mom that you were sent to hospital I was so worried! Why the hell weren’t you wearing your contacts or glasses!”
Lance shrugged “Ivserson confiscated my glasses and I couldn’t find my contacts this morning.”
A look of anger crossed Hunks usually kind features.
Suddenly a thought came to Lance’s mind.
How did Pidge get his glasses back?
“Oh yeah you had a visitor a while ago. They left you a card.” Hunks easy smile returned as he handed over a folded piece of lined paper acting as a crude card.
Lance opened it and chuckled quietly to himself.

'Dear Lance,
Sorry for scaring you to the point of you trying to fly away, don’t do that again or I will use my hacking powers to ruin your life.
-Pidge.
Ps. Don’t worry about Iverson, I tatted him out to Principle Coran. Us four eyes gotta stick together.’

Lance smiled as he placed the card on his bed side table making a mental note to offer to get their computer fixed later on.

all of us have the power to change someone’s life for the better in the smallest ways. say hello to the elderly person in the waiting room, listen to their stories–no matter how crazy they may sound. smile at people: your server, your parent, yourself, even a stranger! it can make their day a little brighter, and change their perspective on things. always say thank you, and admit when you are in the wrong. kindness is a simple gift we all can give, never doubt your ability to change things with some compassion

Ay look at me reading to far into a book again. Either @vaveyard is a genius putting little hopeful messages into her books first two words or she’s still a genius and I’m reading too far into this at 1am. Anyway the point of this post: these are the first pages of Red Queen, Glass Sword, and King’s Cage respectively. The first two words of RQ are “I hate”, and a powerful message through tall these books is the prejudice and privilege of the Silvers over Reds, who hate each other. Sound familiar?
The next is the first two words of GS “I flinch”, as in fear. There is fear on both sides of this book, Reds of how the Silvers may oppress or hurt them, the Silvers on how the Reds may fight back and change tradition that gives them severe advantages. Again, sound familiar? These are all too similar to modern times, and well…everything that is going on, from police brutality to “alternative facts” which all add to issues like racism, sexism, anti Semitism, homophobia, xenophobia, islamophobia, etc., and Ms. Aveyard has done a great job showing these same issues in a totally different world, and the fear and hate that create and add to them. Which is why I probably read too much into this and the beginning of KC.
Because the first two words of KC are “I rise”, which is what we all need to do now. Whether through speaking up and calling local politicians, or going to the woman’s March, pride marches, BLM marches, the science March, anything that shows we won’t give in and that we will continue to fight and have our voices heard. So if this was intentional, I applaud you Ms. Aveyard, and if it wasn’t I don’t care, because this was a message I needed for myself right now, and I’m sure many others do to. So listen to this, random tumblr, and instead of giving in to fear and hate, rise up. Rise up! You don’t need to be the Scarlet Guard or Mare Barrow, every rebellion and cause needs Kilorns and supporters who are not always spotlighted. You are important to these causes too. You are what drives them forward and makes them noticeable. Keep fighting!

Ten things to do in 2017:

1. Take it a day at a time. You don’t have to know what you’re doing the next day or even the next hour. I’ve learned that the more you think in the future, the shorter the day seems and the months fly past you and you’re left feeling discontent and unsatisfied. It’s almost like everything has been in a blur, and you find yourself saying, “the year went by so fast”, even though you haven’t accomplished much. So do everything in the moment of ‘now’, and cherish each minute like it’s the last minute you have.

2. Let it go. You know nothing is going to change, because you can’t change people unless they truly want to and you can’t change the past either, and the sooner you realize this, you will spend more time being happy than in a constant battle with your mind and your heart. They need to rest too.

3. Take risks. If you never take any, the moment that turned out for the worst could have turned out for the best. This works vice-versa as well, but either way, you will learn from these experiences. You won’t forget how rapidly your heart was beating in these moments and how electric you felt. It will be worth it in the end, trust me.

4. Call up that person that you didn’t spend enough time getting to know, simply because you were too distracted with somebody else or just didn’t feel like you’d become something more than acquaintances. Greet strangers and embrace the idea of diversity. Ask questions about different cultures, morals, ideas, beliefs; educate yourself as much as you can.

5. Go ahead and wear that outfit you keep telling yourself that it doesn’t look good on you. You bought it because you liked it, yes? So, show it to the whole damn world. If you do it with a smile and confidently squared shoulders—even better. You are beautiful.

6. Instead of procrastinating and wallowing in self-pity, get up and do something. Sitting around is not going to do much but make you feel horrible, and you’ll create scenarios that may not even exist or be as big in your head that will cause matters to become worse. You want this to be your year of explosive progress? Set goals and strive to achieve them. You want to look back at the end of the year and say, “I did good”.

7. Spend more time with your family or friends. Build a support system so strong, that you will never feel lonely. In fact, this support system will lead you to feeling content even when you are alone, because you won’t feel the constant need to either be with someone or have somebody who loves you, because you know you’ll have people who love you and the more love you surround yourself with, the easier it becomes to love yourself too.

8. Be kind always and be angry when you need to be. Stand up for the ideas that you believe in and don’t back down from them just because you have a different opinion. Learn to love the sound of your voice when it bounces off the walls of a classroom full of people, because your voice has the power to change a million minds. Remember, you are allowed to feel whatever it is you feel.

9. Go on more road trips or just take a few minutes to be outside by yourself. Inhale and exhale the air around you. Watch the stars, the sunset, the sunrise, the birds flying in the sky, the cars passing by. Walk in the rain sometimes without an umbrella, instead of running. Let the sunlight soak your skin more often. God, isn’t the world itself beautiful?

10. Be faithful. This is the year you hoped to be better. Don’t let anything stop you from achieving that, because you are limitless as long as you believe yourself to be.

She’s Just Not That Into You » Part V (A Harry Styles Miniseries)

Miss the previous parts? Part One » Part Two » Part Three » Part Four

Check out the inspiration behind Harry’s home here!

As always, this miniseries is dedicated to @stylesunchained. Thank you for your screaming for no spoilers, my love. It wouldn’t be proper of me to not thank @chrissy22787 and @permanentcross for their continued support and also continued screaming over this story. Where would I be without you three?!

Let me know what you think! Happy reading.

He’d told Harry that he considered you to be one of his best friends, which shocked him a bit, considering Nick didn’t mention you all that much. But, plenty of time had passed since Harry was in London for an extended period. Nick was a magnet for friends, and he was allowed to make more without Harry around…

…especially if they were friends like you.

Summary: Lance isn’t known for giving up easily so when he looks at his team and thinks he’s the most useless one, it’s no big surprise that he will do everything in his power to change that.

Even if it means he has to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

There are nights when Pidge’s headphones aren’t available for Lance. Sometimes it’s because they are uncharged, other times it’s because someone else is using them. Those are the nights when Lance has to make up for the lack of sound with something, so he usually ends up staring at the ceiling and thinking about his current situation.
Thing is, thinking is good, but thinking too much is dangerous.
It’s in one of those nights that Lance reaches the conclusion that he’s the most useless one in the team and nothing is able to take that idea out of his mind for days after. He sees Shiro talking with Allura about plans and strategies, Pidge and Hunk figuring out more and more about the mysterious alien technology, Keith training and becoming even better than he already is. And then there’s him, doing some unfunny jokes and failing at flirting.
A burden.
So that’s what makes Lance move from spending those nights staring at ceiling to spending them training with the castle robots. It’s hard at first, to trade his sleeping time for hours in various simulations, but he tells himself his improvement will be worth the effort. His improvement will pay for all the sleepless nights and for the pain of the injuries he collects.
He doesn’t talk to his team about it and convinces himself is because he wants to make a surprise for them and not because he doesn’t want to admit his uselessness. Maybe they were just waiting for him to realize so they could talk about replacing him with someone more qualified. Although space isn’t always the best thing, Lance doesn’t want to be replaced. He doesn’t want to go back and tell his family that he failed at something he was supposedly born to do. It’s better if the team doesn’t know.
But the universe doesn’t like Lance that much and after two weeks,Keith is the first one to find him
“Lance?”
It surprises Lance enough to make him let his right side open and of course the robot uses it to its advantage. Lance hits the ground three seconds later, a yelp escaping his lips.
“End training sequence.” He says and can’t help on how defeated his voice sounds. He looks up to see Keith staring at him, a confused look on his face. “Hm, hi Keith”
“You are…training?” Keith asks and Lance flinches at his voice tone. Keith speaks like he doesn’t believe in what he’s seeing.
Like he doesn’t believe Lance is doing something useful.
“Well…yeah"Lance says as his answer. He’s still on the ground, looking at Keith at an awkward angle. Stopping made the ache on his muscles finally surface and Lance wants to use every second he has on the floor to rest a little. “I couldn’t sleep”
“So you came here?” And there’s that voice tone again. Lance doesn’t quite know if hearing Keith talk like that makes him sad or angry.
“Yes.” Lance makes a movement to sit so he can look at Keith properly. His bayard has already deactivated, so he only puts it on his lap as he crosses his legs. “Is there a problem?”
They stare at each other for some seconds and Lance feels his shoulders getting tense. Keith occupies the position of most unpredictable person Lance has ever met and he never fails to honor that title. That said, Lance shouldn’t be so surprised when Keith manages to surprise him again.
After those few seconds of staring, a smile appears on Keith’s face.
A smile.
“Nah” Keith answers and the smile is still there. “It’s good to know I’m not the only one training a little bit more”
As soon as those words leave Keith’s mouth Lance feels a warm feeling going through his body and he knows it isn’t only because of the exercise he was doing a few moments earlier. Not that Lance is ever gong to admit that hearing those words from Keith made him feel good about himself. That secret was going with him to his grave.
“But don’t train too much” Keith continues and the smirk has left his face to make room for a more serious expression that looks a lot like the ones Shiro pulls when he’s explaining plans. Lance wonders if Keith heard those same words from Shiro some time. “You need your rest too”
“Afraid I’ll be sweeping the floor with your face in the near future?” Lance says but there’s no heat behind his words.
And Keith (Keith!!) chuckles.
“Terrified” The red paladin answers and the smile is back.“But for now” Keith walks to where Lance is sit and extends his hand. It’s a gesture Keith has never used with him and it’s kind of weird but Lance accepts the help anyway. “Let’s see what you are capable of”
Lance smiles at the invitation.
(They end up beating the levels 4 and 5 of the training program and this time Lance isn’t half dead when he tells Keith they make a good team)

For the next two weeks or so, everything is fine. The results of Lance’s extra training start showing and he gets a compliment from Shiro on his good work (Lance was ready to die from happiness) It’s a good feeling, to know he’s a good soldier.
Thing is, training with Keith is good, training against Keith is like asking to have his ass kicked. No matter how hard he tries to get better, Keith still wins. Every single time. And that’s not all. He sees Hunk’s aim getting better, the way he now manages to control his heavy gun like he was born to do it. (Maybe he was. Maybe all of them were born to be paladins. Not Lance, though. He wasn’t born for something that big.) He sees how Pidge can now come up with a plan in a matter of seconds, sees how Shiro uses a confident and firm voice tone to guide them through battle. Lance is good, of course he is. But not good enough. Never good enough.
All the useful things he has to offer can be covered. If he was gone, the team wouldn’t lose much. Long range fighter? They have Hunk to make up for it. Strategist? Pidge. The mood is bad and the team needs to cheer up? Both Shiro and Hunk can help. And then there’s Keith, who is better than Lance in every way possible so there is no need to elaborate things too much. The only things the team would lose for real if he wasn’t there would be his pathetic puns and pick up lines.
It’s only later that he realizes that actually no, those two aren’t the only unique things he has.
Thing is, Lance is tall, thin and has long arms and legs. He’s fast and he’s agile. His reaction time is on point. Sometimes, his body moves faster than his mind.
Lance is the perfect human shield.
The idea hits him like a slap to the face. Is that why Blue chose him? The more he thinks about it, the more sense it makes. He’s there to protect his team. To protect his family.
And that’s what he’s going to do, at all costs.

Could you possibly, if it's no trouble, do dialogue between Solas and Zevran? I've always wondered how that would go. Thank you

Zevran: You are a rather quiet fellow, aren’t you?
Solas: I do not feel the need to speak simply to fill silence, if that is what you mean.
Zevran: I see. Should I take this to mean you are shy? In need of someone to lavish you with attention? Bring you out of your shell? I can be very encouraging in that regard.
Solas: Hmm.
Zevran: You do not speak much.
Solas: You speak more than enough for the both of us.
Zevran: A-ha! Yes, true. But what fun is talking if you don’t have a partner to do it with?
Solas: I’m sure you will let me know eventually.

Zevran: How long have you traveled alone, Solas?
Solas: For quite some time. I have kept more familiar company in the Fade for many years. Why?
Zevran: Then it must have been some time for you.
Solas: Some time since what?
Zevran: Since you last had a lover.
Solas: What?
Zevran: Assuming you’ve had lovers, of course.
Solas: That’s… That is not important right now. We have far greater concerns at hand.
Zevran: Very true. Only it helps in times of trouble to seek… release, does it not?
Solas: I prefer to focus on our current goals. Such distractions would… complicate matters.
Zevran: Suit yourself.

Zevran: You do not approve of my line of work?
Solas: Death may sometimes be necessary, but the decision to end a life should never be taken lightly. Never for reasons as shallow as greed.
Zevran: No need to sound so angry, my friend. I understand the nature of my craft. Am I to be shamed for not properly mourning the lives that I take? I would rather not waste my time feeling guilty for something I cannot change. At least now I have the power to choose who I kill - and more often than not, it’s Crow’s blood I’m spilling.
Solas: For revenge? Or in order to eliminate the competition?
Zevran: Can’t it be both?

Solas: You were enslaved by the Crows?
Zevran: A slave? I would not exactly call myself as such…but yes, I suppose that is accurate.
Solas: They owned you, held complete control over your life. And then you escaped. You sought your freedom.
Zevran: You make it sound so noble. I am flattered. Though perhaps the story is less impressive if you consider my survival depended on sweet talking the person I had just attempted to kill while trying not to spill my guts into the dirt. It was less of an escape and more… knowing how to see an opportunity when it presented itself. I’ve had to end a number of lives since in order to maintain my independence from my former employers. But it makes it so much more satisfying, doesn’t it? Killing for your own purpose, instead of someone else’s.
Solas: I am not certain… but I understand your meaning.

Solas: Assassinations are common in Antiva, I take it? If they were not, the Crows would not be such a formidable organization.
Zevran: It makes the process so much easier when you simply eliminate the competition, no?
Solas: It may be efficient, but it is a shortsighted approach. A leader is nothing without his people and fear can only be an effective tool for so long without breeding chaos. One may require death as a means to an end, but to do so simply in the pursuit of more power…
Zevran: The fallout was never my concern or my specialty. I was always long gone with coin in hand by that point.
Solas: Have you ever wanted something more than that? To have your work strive towards a greater purpose?
Zevran: (laughs) Why do you ask? Is it possible our humble apostate is in the market for an assassin?

[Romanced Solas]

Zevran: She is quite beautiful, isn’t she?
Solas: Who?
Zevran: Come now, Solas. We both know who I am speaking of. Just as we both know precisely where your eyes were lingering a moment ago…
Solas: I’m certain you are mistaken.
Zevran: I cannot blame you. Admittedly, I’ve been enjoying the view myself. Quite an ample handful, no?
Solas: Please, for once, resist the urge to keep speaking.

[Romanced Solas]

Zevran: You know the Inquisitor well, don’t you?
Solas: I would like to think so.
Zevran: Tell me… What does Lavellan look for in a lover?
Solas: Excuse me?
Zevran: How would I woo her, if I were so inclined? Does she favor dashing good looks? Passionate embraces? Someone to sweep her off of her feet?
Solas: (annoyed) No. I would not say she cares for such things.
Zevran: Oh, Solas. I don’t think you give yourself enough credit.
Solas: What?
Zevran: Do you not think yourself handsome? A desirable lover? I could teach you some things that may bolster your confidence in that regard.
Solas: This is not a conversation I wish to have. Least of all with you.
Zevran: (laughs) Do not worry, my friend. I only tease the people I like. Most of the time, anyway.

anonymous asked:

Your Chlonette one-shot was amazing! How do manage to write action so well? I want to diversify the topics of the things I write, and action is one of the major topics I'm struggling with.

thank you!!! it was super fun to write, i’m a sucker for spy/assassin au’s! and let’s see, advice on writing action….

1) don’t go into explicit detail about the entire fight.

you’re not a hollywood stunt choreographer. it’s not necessary to tell us every single thing that happens in a fight. i’ve read fanfictions where fight scenes go on for literally thousands of words and you run the risk of boring your reader when things drag out that long. make sure you’re setting the scene. give us a description of where the fight is. give us smells, give us sights. describe weapons and bodies and how they move/throw punches. set that up early on so we have an idea of how this scene looks.

and after that? pull back a little. let the reader fill in the blanks about how the fight is going down blow-by-blow. use that time to give a sense of the character’s emotions. what the character is thinking. maybe they’re strategizing in their head. maybe they’re worrying about another character. use your imagination and make it interesting!

2) shake it up!

make all of your scenes different! if you’re writing about a warrior who always fights with a sword, maybe have her lose her sword for one fight scene and make her fight hand to hand. hell, maybe have her struggle with hand to hand and give us a fight scene where she actually struggles. heck, make your characters have to fight in a dark room where they can’t see. how does their fighting style change? how does that affect their skill and their awareness? if you make every fight sound/look the same, it gets boring after a while so don’t be afraid to get creative!

3) use your fight scenes to tell the reader something

your fights should always serve a narrative purpose. throwing in needless, random fights work when you’re michael bay, not so much when you’re a fiction writer. if you’re putting in a fight scene, make it so that your characters get something important during that fight that’ll advance the plot. make them learn something about themselves (a new power! a new skill!) during that fight. make them grapple with a weakness or insecurity that they have that’ll advance their character development or be brought back as a plot device later. the only times where you should really zoom in up close on fight scenes is when they’re doing something important. because then when your reader sees you getting into a fight scene, they’ll think “oooo, something important is gonna happen!”

this is also a really great time to get into emotions and motivations in your fight! again, blow-by-blow action scenes get old very quick. does your character feel angry? humiliated? hurt? traumatized? what are the stakes? why is this fight important? why is this character fighting harder? why are they hesitating? fights are emotional and dramatic! add some texture in there to make the scenes come to life.

4) use your language to add perspective to your scenes

sometimes when you’re in a hand-to-hand fight with someone, it’s good to really zoom in. a character might feel another character’s breath on their face. might smell their sweat and blood. might be feeling hot and claustrophobic. sometimes (like in war scenes for example) it might be good to pan out and step away and give a snapshot of bodies, of screaming, of gunshots, or swords clashing, etc and not necessarily go into in depth detail about every single mini-fight going on in that mix. think to yourself “do i want them to focus on this one fight, or do i want them to focus on this battle as a whole” and try to emulate that.

another cool thing to do is play around with sentence structure. so if you want a fight scene to go really quickly, use short/choppy sentences to make it seem fast and punchy. if you want a fight scene to seem sluggish and like it’s going on forever, use longer, run-on sentences to show fatigue or exhaustion. just a cool device to make your scenes more engaging!

Newcomers Pt 8.1

Pt 8.1

There is a saying “silent as the void” for there is no sound in the void, but unlike it’s name it is not empty, as the Benemar discovered all those centuries ago. Their culture was a bloody one and their history more so, genocide and slavery were the norm and often how power changed hands was for a child to kill their parent and claim their title for themselves.

A brutish piglike race that would often referred to as savages and barbarians. But they were not without honour, their code of conduct was vital to the running of their culture and mainly the reason why their wars were bloody but brief. They often fought their wars in a single battle, both sides would field their forces and whoever won that battle would gain he others territory. Efficient really but meant they faced every obstacle with only the short term goals in mind. Because of this in the Alliance they rarely if ever rose to commanding positions leaving that to the other races as long as there was a battle to be won. The Elong who ran the Alliance were fine with this, a race they could control and send against the ever growing Gal who never seemed to run out of their own troops.

This arrangement lasted centuries with all parties benefiting from it.

But then a new race appeared, the Newcomers.

First contact was slow, the Newcomers expanded but never at a rate the Alliance thought to be a problem and kept sweeping the problem under the rug until in an explosion they expanded into seven separate systems. These worlds had often been believed to be uninhabitable but the Newcomers made themselves quite at home as to them the climate was quite tolerable.

The Benemar though, were restless. The Gal had not launched any incursion into Alliance held territories and the Benemar’s numbers were growing as were their contempt for peace. These Newcomers gave them a new enemy to direct their energy against. And with the Alliance’s blessing they went to war.

Their outlining worlds fell quickly and their inhabitants were slaughtered, no true remains could be analysed as the Benemar defiled them, cutting them up and hanging their parts on their walls and drinking from their skulls. What they failed to notice is those Newcomers they had mistaken for their military were in fact just law enforcers, their military was elsewhere.

No one knows how they found the Benemar homeworld but however they did it they were quick to act. Their fleet broke into 2 unequal parts, the smaller would engage and hold the Benemar as they cut through their space while the rest went for Bento Prime.

Never in the 400 years since the Benemar took to the stars had their world ever been besieged and it was here they saw the Newcomers for what they were. Their defence fleet was cast aside, their satellites did not even get a chance to fire a shot before being destroyed. Then the Newcomers ground forces came, thousands and thousands of them. Still the Benemar outnumbered the Newcomers 4:1 and sent their armies against them. They lost every battle, they were continuously outmanoeuvred or simply out gunned and the Newcomers advance never slowed, never faulted and never stopped.

When the Benemar fleet finally heard that their world was under attack they almost didn’t believe it and in that moment they were attacked by the Newcomers first fleet sent to stop them from aiding their homeworld. The entire sector looked to be on the edge of collapse and intern the whole flank of the Alliance would be open to the Gal.

They had to intervene.

They approached the Newcomers with the offer of peace saying the Benemar had illegally entered the Newcomers territory and thus started the war. To make up for that transgression the Humans would be offered a number of planets as well as the return of all the worlds the Benemar had taken from them. The Newcomers said little during these initial talks and refused to even show their faces but eventually they agreed and they left Bento Prime and the Benemar retreated from Newcomer territory in shame.

It would be nearly a hundred years before the Newcomers would speak to the Alliance again, they came forth to negotiate trade agreements and a decade later were accepted as members of the Alliance and would go on to serve on Alliance ships and in their fleets.

These Newcomers, came to be known as the Humans and they never forget and they rarely forgive.

Traditionally, America uses the musical guest performances on Saturday Night Live as an opportunity to take a bathroom break. Occasionally, an artist is so unexpectedly engaging they cause the nation to cross it’s collective legs. This happened in 2008 when Adele appeared on the feverishly anticipated Sarah Palin episode and saw her 19 album rocket from the low hundreds to the top 20. Sometimes, a musician performs so horrifically that their career expires on the spot. That was the sad fate of Ashlee Simpson who dissolved into a puddle of embarrassment when her pre-recorded voice track malfunctioned back in 2004. And then there are the times when the show goes all out to make a star. At this early stage in his I’m-a-big-boy-now solo career, no one knows for certain whether Harry Styles has Justin Timberlake-style mass appeal in his destiny. But SNL absolutely treated him like it’s a foregone conclusion.

In the same way the show always rolls out the red carpet for frequent host and musical guest Timberlake, Harry Styles was all over this episode. He popped up in the opening moments of host Jimmy Fallon’s painstakingly choreographed singalong to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. He displayed decent comedy chops impersonating Mick Jagger in a Family Feud skit – where  he made a meta-reference to the madness of walking away from a successful band One Direction to go solo – and threw himself into the role of a singing Civil War soldier in a subsequent sketch.

Halfway into the show, he stopped being funny and dealt directly with the lingering question of whether he could stand on a stage without conjuring up sad memories of his missing bandmates. A matter of seconds into his performance of Sign of the Times, all doubts were erased. He looked dapper in a bold plaid double-breasted suit. He oozed charisma and whether you think the song is an instant classic or a decent tune that’s been dragged kicking and screaming into passing for an anthem, he and his back-up musicians tore into it like it was his Greatest Hit. Actual Americans reacted to the performance with enthusiasm. “Finally, a British rock star,” gushed Lori Majewski, host of Sirius XM’s daily music talk show, Feedback. “He blew me away. His hair. His suit. The song. He’s the anti-Ed Sheeran.” Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, co-executive producer of Family Guy and a ride-or-die One Direction superfan had previously pronounced herself `meh’ on the song. Last night changed that meh to a wow. “He sounded amazing. He opened with the same kind of power he used to close Drag Me Down with and then built from here. He left it all out on the field and he still has another one to go!”

The second song, Tell Me Something proudly displayed its Seventies folk-rock roots, and saw Styles strumming a 12-string guitar and displaying a gift for harmonizing with his bandmates that wasn’t always evident in the 1D era. “It’s pretty and calm, but also a smidgen not calm,” noted Chevapravatdumrong. “I want to listen to it while walking through a field that is mostly grass but also some flowers.”

Lori Majewski has no doubts that Harry Styles, solo artist, is standing on the precipice of massive stardom. “He brought out the cougar in me and he’s going to do the same to every woman in America.” Maybe she’s right. Or maybe Styles’ appeal will remain limited to grown-up One Direction fans.  The only conclusion that can safely be drawn at this juncture is that Harry Styles SNL performance put him much closer to the Adele category than the Ashlee Simpson one.
