and that is why I am astonishingly

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings.

Complimenting an Artist

I don’t want to seem ungrateful, because I really, really am. I love all the feedback I am getting here on tumblr. I know why especially authors still miss lj, but tumblr is an amazing space for us fanartists.

But there is one thing that bugs the hell out of me: “You are so talented.” No. Just no.

I am not a five year old with an astonishingly good grasp on anatomy - I am 28 years old and my stuff looks good, not because I am talented, but because I worked my ass off to be where I am. Look at my very first digital drawing. It was Merlin and it was awful. Talent may give you an advantage at the start, but whatever you make out of it depends on your work and your commitment. Telling me that’s talent feels like completely ignoring the work it takes.

I know you are just trying to be nice, but there are so many better ways to tell artists that you like their stuff. Tell them what exactly you love about their work, tell them the details, heck, just tell them you love the piece of work as a whole. Everything is better than “You are so talented”
