Nine-year-old Jack Garcia of Maryland died in June 2015, after a severe beating at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend, 32-year-old Robert Leroy Wilson. Wilson reportedly beat the boy as punishment for eating a slice of birthday cake that he was saving for his 2-year-old daughter.
Jack and his mother, Oriana Iris Garcia had been living with Wilson for several months. She met Wilson online and moved from California to live with him.
Oriana knew about the birthday cake incident after Wilson called her at work and agreed with Wilson that the boy needed to be punished. The birthday cake beating was not the first incident of abuse that Jack had endured since he and his mother moved in with Wilson.
The boy’s uncle, 25-year-old Jacob Barajas, his mother’s brother, was staying with the couple and also reportedly abused him. Jack had not been enrolled in school in Maryland and was under the supervision of his unemployed uncle during the day.
Barajas handcuffed Jack to a chair five days before the boy’s death as part of the birthday cake punishment. Wilson repeatedly hit Jack in the stomach.
As the child’s condition worsened, his mother did research on head injuries online, but then reportedly surfed the web on Facebook and played video games as her son’s condition worsened. Barajas called an ambulance and Garcia sent the ambulance away.
Oriana Garcia pled guilty to child abuse charges. Robert Wilson pled guilty to murder in March 2016 and is currently serving a 30-year sentence. Jacob Barajas pled guilty to child abuse five months ago but has not yet been sentenced.
