and so will your children and children's children

“Think of the children, please.”

She had told them so many times.

“The children. I beg you, all of you. Think of the children.”

They had ignored her, and now James kind of wished they hadn’t.

Their torches light up the cave’s walls, barely pushing back the darkness, just enough for Catherine to read and half-whispering translate the ancient symbols scrawled all over them. James is by her side, one arm around the woman’s neck, and goddamn it, the old hag is still whimpering about children and won’t anyone think of them, please.

“Shut your mouth,” James growls at her, squeezes a bit. The old woman croaks. She goes still then. Her eyes are fixed on a point over James’ head, going wide and huge and he’s got enough of that. “What is it now, huh? You already insane with fear?”

The rest of the group laughs. Their silver daggers catch the torches’ light, reflect it into the dark.

“James,” Catherine says. “James, be quiet.”

“You know, this is why I’m a hunter.” He pulls the old woman close, frowning when her jaw falls open in silent horror. “Hey, listen when you’re talked to. Unbelievable. But seriously, you people are pathetic. Can’t even take care of a few bloodsuckers by yourself. Aren’t you angry? Huh? They took your children, forchrissake.”

“James.” A gloved hand touches his arm. Catherine’s face is pale like death in the torchlight. “We have to go.”

Something shuffles behind him. James throws a look over his shoulder, the others shifting their torches into his field of vision, but nothing’s there. The old woman lets out a pathetic wail. He shakes her off.

“Crazy old hag. You’re all cowards, your entire damn village. If it had been my kids, I would’ve marched here on my own, killed them all at once - hey!”

The woman is at his feet, digging her clawy hands into his legs where she grips them. “Now you’ve done it,” she whispers. “The children. I told you to think of the children.”

“James,” Catherine says, and then a white hands reaches around her neck and pulls her into the dark.

“What the fuck - Cat!”

A torch drops. James whirls around just in time to watch the fire sizzle out on the wet cave floor. For a second, the light illuminates the ground in brilliant, terrifying red.

“Oh God.” He can’t breathe. The torches go out, one by one, each falling when another hand claws into a neck and another man or woman is pulled into the dark.

Then, the old woman is in front of him. Blood pours from her thin lips. James stares, a scream stuck in his throat, as a claw wounds its way through her neck. The last torch blows out.

But the cave doesn’t plunge into darkness.

“The children,” a choir of hundred voices hums. Two hundred eyelids slip open with a wet, sucking squelch. Two hundred small, round circles awaken on the walls of the cave that has never been one but a nest instead, and the scratch of hundreds upon hundreds of stinking nails over rotting stone sway the choir’s soft song into a rhythm:

“The children, the children, how could you forget the children?”

You're a smart woman (I love your blog), and admire your arguments and ways of not giving a fuck about what others think. I don't want children in the future, but this is frowned upon by society and (my family). Tips on how to keep my cool, or what to say when people confront me about it in a provocative way? I get really emotional about it, because I know it's unaccepted for women to not want children, so I don't know how to deal with these expectations people have for me, about children. 🌸😪

Thank you so much for your kind comments. They mean a lot to me!

There are a few ways to handle your situation, but no matter how you choose to do so, all of your actions and decisions must be made in wise mind.

There are three types of mindsets - emotion mind: in which a person things impulsively and with deep feeling, logic mind: in which a person thinks based on only fact, truth, and knowledge, without consideration of feeling or emotions, neither their own nor others, and wise mind: a perfect balance between both mindsets. It is the most healthy and productive.

It seems like you are handling the situation in emotion mind when you need to be in wise mind when thinking over the situation yourself and especially when discussing it with others, like your family.

Do not go into conversations heated, passionate, unhappy, or with pity for yourself. Feel and validate your emotions, but find the guiding logic behind why you are feelings such things. Many women do not want to have children. Some have hormone imbalances. Some are unable. Some feel that they will not be good mothers. Some do not have the resources to do so. Some do not want to subject new lives to this words, and some, like you, it seems, just are not built and not attracted to the idea of having children. This is normal and no reflection of poor mental health or failure on your part. It is just the way you are built.

Attempt to educate your family rationally and with logic, whilst also in consideration of your feelings, trying to convey them clearly. They are important, and they are yours, and yours alone.

If words do not work, try the ‘shielding’ tag to keep yourself safe from their words and negativity towards you.

Good luck.

Just so you know, I am a man, by the way. ^^

@iwanttodateizzy tagged me to do the World Book Day Tag and it might be a bit late but I’m gonna do it anyways.

1. Who is your favourite author - from your country! / mothertongue
I haven’t read a German book in years, and even longer since I read one by a German author. It would be easier to say which German authors I dislike (based on their books) than who I like. The only one I vaguely remember not hating was Kerstin Gier? Or maybe Christoph Hardebusch, his Die Trolle and Sturmwelten series I rather liked.

2. Your favourite children’s book (it’s hard, I know)
Does YA count as children’s book? Probably not?
What I read as a kid and liked was Harry Potter, so even though that’s officially YA I count is as children’s book (though admittedly, I mostly only listened to the first few books as audiobooks. The German guy who read them was SO GOOD. I still think of his voice when I read anything Harry Potter)

3. A book that changed your life?
One would probably be the Geheime Welt Idhún series by Laura Gallego García. It’s a fantasy series with a love triangle involving a girls and one good guy and one bad guy, who obviously both love her and hate each other. BUT!!! She never decides between them. She simply loves them both and tells them to either get along or not be with her at all. It was the first time I encountered polyamory, even though it was not called that in the book.
Another, more recent one actually also has polyamory. Falls Chance Ranch series by Rolf&Ranger taught me a lot about… such a huge variety of topics that I don’t even know where to begin. But it made me reevaluate how i behave and how I’m programmed to react to certain things, and gave me a lot of incredibly valuable lessons, and continues to do so with every new chapter and every reread.

4. The best book you read this year?
Broken by Jex Lane is VERY high on the list of good books I’ve read this year! The whole series, Beautiful Monsters, is AMAZING once you get past the awkward beginning of book 1, Captive

5. And the worst book you read this year?
I’ve read several bad ones, but not one that was the WORST yet tbh. One that really disappointed me was A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. I expected so much more from it after hearing it being praised from a lot of sources.

6. Which book is totally overrated?
I’m gonna go with A Darker Shade of Magic again. It just was so incredibly underwhelming for me. I disliked the characters and didn’t care about them or their story at all, it completely failed to engage me. I vaguely want to know what happens, but not enough to want to read it.

7. Randomly recommend a book. For whatever reason!
Evensong’s Heir by L.S. Baird! I absolutely love it, it has amazing worldbuilding, a wonderful cast of characters, beautiful writing with really good poetry/lyrics, and a plot that constantly proved my own predictions wrong in the best way possible

Okay @destielonfire and @amaelangel

Ask and you shall receive!

Here are my official 2017 Cockles Predictions!

(In no particular order)

  • Jensen will share some gross (both in the cute way and the literal meaning) bathroom related story about Misha.
  • Jared will imply during his and Misha’s panel at JIBCon, that Misha enjoys giving Jensen hand-jobs.
  • Jensen and Misha will go on a second family trip together– this time, camping!
  • During a livestream, we will get yet another Cockles headboop as well as a cheek kiss, all in the same video.
  • A fan will be at a SPN filming location and witness Jensen smacking Misha’s ass– hard … for seemingly no reason (that we’ll know of).
  • A photo/video of Misha enjoying one of the first brews from the Family Business Beer Company.
  • A follow-up photo (most likely posted by Danneel) of Jensen enjoying watching Misha enjoy one of the first brews from the Family Business Beer Company.
  • Misha, talking to his kids about “Uncle Jensen”.
  • At least three Jensen-specific items in this year’s GISHWHES.
  • Cockles hand-holding– a lot of it.

Dated for Posterity: March 16th, 2017.

THIS. THIS MADE ME SO ANGRY BECAUSE SHE’S BLAMING HIM AGAIN. SHE IS BLAMING A POOR KID THAT TRIED TO MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER FOR HIS GOD DAMN FAMILY AND ALL HE GETS IS THIS RESPONSE. LIKE DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT AGE HE WAS WHEN SHIT STARTED? WHEN EURUS KILLED REDBEARD AND HE HAD TO COMFORT AND CHANGE HIS BROTHER’S MEMORY. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW GUILTY HE FELT? DO YOU THINK ABOUT HOW STRESSED THIS MAN IS ABOUT EVERYTHING AND THE FACT THAT HE IS RAISING YOUR GOD DAMN CHILDREN AND MAKES SURE THAT EURUS GETS WHAT SHE WANTS?
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN SHERLOCK WAS USING DRUGS? WHY AREN’T YOU MAKING A LIST? WHERE WERE YOU WHEN HE SEARCHED FOR HIS LITTLE BROTHER?
DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT HE IS ALWAYS WEARING THAT GUN-SWORD-UMBRELLA BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS IN A DEFENSIVE MOOD BECAUSE WHEN HE TOOK THE JOB HE KNEW THE RISKS IT INVOLVED?
SO NO LADY, HE SOULDN’T HAVE DONE BETTER.
YOU SHOULD’VE RAISED YOUR CHILDREN.
YOU SHOULD’VE DONE BETTER. YOU SHOULD’VE THINK ABOUT THE BROTHER THAT RAISED YOUR OTHER CHILDREN WHEN YOU WEREN’T THERE.

The worst part about being abused by your mother is that society teaches you they have a deep maternal bond to their children. You always see or hear about mothers who will do anything to protect their children, and would never hate or harm them. Fathers are usually the ones portrayed as abusive and unreliable while mothers cling to their children with all that they have.

And it makes the abuse hurt even more. It makes you wonder where you went so wrong that your mother couldn’t love you the way you have always been taught that mothers should. That the only “motherly instinct” she had was to beat, neglect, and gaslight you.

Lessons I have learned from hosting children’s craft parties

You may remember me from such iconic rants as ‘we get to be the aliens this time’ and ‘the glue famine of 2017.’ What you may not be aware of is that our store does classes and birthday parties. I used to get roped into doing them. Now it’s part of my job description and I… have to do them. So here are some things I have learned.

  • Children do not understand self-control. You cannot stop them from dumping an entire tube of paint onto the canvas. You cannot stop them from using their hands. You cannot stop them from using their face. You cannot stop them. You cannot stop them.
  • A key difference between children and adults is that children are generally prepared for the answer ‘no.’ Adults are prepared for the answer ‘no’ as well, but they know that the response to ‘no’ is ‘I’d like to speak to your manager.’
  • Nothing in this world can prevent a group of children from marching around the room, chanting ‘avacado mustache, avacado mustache.’
  • At some point during the class, some of the kids will start counting down from 50. The rest of the class will join in. They never reach zero. No one knows what happens at zero. We’re afraid to find out.
  • Children are known to bark when a stranger approaches.
  • They will ask questions. As with the fair folk, it is in your best interest to answer them honestly and with heavily coded language- lest they use it against you. When questions cannot be answered, your best course of action is an offering of food or something shiny.
  • A gathering of children of any number exceeding 8 will eventually devolve into chaos. Embrace it or be defeated by it.
  • Sometimes 8 means 12. Sometimes 12 means 18. Sometimes 18 means 23. Sometimes 8 means 23.
  • A great way to get children to listen to you is to shout ‘if you can hear me, clap once!’ They clap once, it gets their attention. Then softer. ‘if you can hear me, clap twice.’ They clap. You have their attention. Savor these moments. Use them wisely. Always know what you are going to say before you use this power. Their attentions are fragile.
  • Speak to them like humans. No, not those humans. Humans you like.

I’ll probably remember more later when my brain isn’t fried.

Tips and Ideas for Writing Post-Apocolypse

Writing post-apocalypse/dystopian future can actually open a large range of possibilities and original ideas but there are some things we should try to keep in mind. The problem with this genre is that is a heavily research-based genre, it requires a lot of information so a lot of things can slip up or be forgotten.

Limits of the Body - This is something that seems to be largely forgotten unless in extreme situations. Yes, humans are tough, but they are also weak. We have that balance of nature within us. People can keep going whilst in a lot of pain, but something like a headache could knock them senseless. I knew someone who got shot in the leg and ran three miles because he thought he had been hit by the brick. The second he realised he had actually been shot and was safe to do so, he collapsed in pain. Quickly establish what your characters can and cannot do.

Children - Children are more robust than so many people give them credit for, they wouldn’t make it to adulthood otherwise. Children are emotionally stronger than they are physically but many children have a lot more endurance for their size than adults because they have to keep up with adults. Two good examples are The Road by Cormac McCarthy and Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

Hygiene - Namely with periods and stuff. It is hard work keeping the body clean, so personal hygiene will be poor but people tend to stop caring at a point when they realise how hard it is to maintain. A lot of people would revert to old fashioned methods of vagina health as well, so people would use reusable cloth or diva cups. The only book I know of that covers this is The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey.

Simple Killers - More people died of the Spanish flu than in the First World War (source). It is surprising how often it is “little things” that kill people off. An emotional death does not have to be all that dramatic, no bloody death or major killer. Something as simple as a small cut that festered will kill someone if not treated correctly. An asthma attack, diabetes, things we see as treatable would make quick work of us without medical aid. Also most deaths are really simple and sudden.

World Limitations - What is this obsession with guns and everything happening in the summer and unlimited cans of food? No, let’s be honest, none of these are realistic. Guns will not last, can goods will be snatched up by the shop loads, most natural disasters will happen in spring or autumn. Remember to do the key thing, make your world real and people are more likely to believe it.

Take a Page - Who are most renowned for their post-apocalyptic stories? British pre-1950s authors. Why? Their worlds are real, the possibilities of what could happen in those worlds are real. Some where and still are scarily accurate, they looked at the current and possible state of things, creating a world too similar to our own. Great examples like 1984 by George Orwell, The Death of Grass by John Christopher, The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, Soylent Green and the Mad Max Series.

When anyone tries to tell me how much better education was “in the good old days”.

dafthappiness  asked:

My parents were living in Oklahoma while my dad was in the airforce and my mom was pregnant with my older brother during that time they went to the rattlesnake festival and my mom was going to eat some rattlesnake and a lady stopped her and told her that is she ate it her baby was going to be cursed so every time something goes wrong for him now we say its becuase my mom ate rattlesnake that one time when she was pregnant with him

THIS IS GOOD
