Yuri on Ice interview translation - PASH! 2017/05 (p24-25)

I am pleased to bring you the very first interview with director Sayo Yamamoto!!! You don’t know how much I’ve been waiting for this… This one is pretty general because of course she has never been interviewed before so they are asking her the basics, but it’s very interesting to finally hear things from her perspective too, since she’s the one who started it all. More interviews with her will be appearing in other magazines in the near future, I’m looking forward to those ones too.

Also, I believe a bright future is to be expected for Yuri on Ice, since she seems to have lots of plans…!! (I was shivering typing out the translation, lol)

Translation is under the cut.

***If you wish to share this translation please do it by reblogging or posting a link to it***

***Re-translating into other languages is ok but please mention that this post is the source***

Interview (first appearance in media!)
The world of “Yuri on Ice” that director Yamamoto wanted to create
With 8 notebooks full of notes in one hand, director Sayo Yamamoto has answered our interview for the first time. We have asked her how this new animation that no one had ever seen before was born.

Hello graphic makers!! You’re probably aware that there is a huge problem on tumblr with whitewashing. Or maybe you’re not. As a predominantly disney-based blogger, the whitewashing I personally see are from the disney fandom, so I’m going to use screencaps from those movies to show you several quick techniques so you’ll see just how easy it is to have your pretty bright and pastel colour palettes and not whitewash characters of colour.

i’ve been getting a lot of messages lately (and unsurprisingly, considering how unrepentantly i’ve been reblogging stuff from them) from followers asking me for podcast recommendations - and i love getting those so thank you, guys! - and i thought i’d make a masterpost of what i’ve both a) finished and b) enjoyed since i’ve started bingeing them.  and, as an extra added bonus, what has canonical lgbt+ representation (since i know what you guys are into [waggles eyebrows]).

1. the bright sessions

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  this is definitely the first podcast that i’ve fallen in love with as hard as my original gateway podcast: welcome to night vale.  it’s so well-written, the characters well-drawn, the premise fascinating - atypicals, or people with some sort of special ability, in therapy - and it’s such a positive story and experience that i can’t help but feel better on days i listen to it.  it really believes in humanity and that’s such a wonderful thing in this day and age.  plus, the voice acting is killer.

2. eos 10

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  i don’t think it’s been officially confirmed that dr. dalias is, at the very least, bisexual (in fact, the official channels seem to be dancing around it, possibly so as not to spoil anything in the upcoming season), though it’s been hinted at plenty in story.  especially as i don’t know how else you can explain a supposedly “straight” male character getting called out on repeatedly thinking about a naked man during a group mind-link experience.  that aside, it is freaking hilarious.  the premise is doctors in space, one formerly drug-addicted doctor helping to stabilize a currently alcoholic one with amazing side characters including nurse jane johns and levi, a hypochondriac alien and deposed prince who seems to have a personal vendetta against wearing pants.  it’s well-acted, cleverly written and a freaking joy to listen too.  so funny and so smart, i can’t recommend it enough!

3. the penumbra podcast

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  so much queer representation it’s bananas.  this ask the creators got is actually pretty representative of their approach to the show, slyly funny and very gay.  our main character is a genderbending queer private investigator who’s lost his heart head over a sweet-smelling thief with a heart of gold and more aliases than jennifer garner, all set against a noir backdrop.  oh, and on mars.  yeah, you read all of that right.  there are a few awesome side stories as well, including a couple of horror ones (that have no effect on the main juno steel story line, so can be skipped - and the creators are VERY GOOD about warning what’s to come in the episode notes), as well as lesbian outlaws and a disabled knight.  there’s literally nothing not to love.  EXCEPT FOR HOW JUNO STEEL WON’T LET HIMSELF HAVE NICE THINGS.

4. the black tapes

hey, hi, if you’re into horror, suspense, creepery or demons, this is so very much for you.  the premise is that alex reagan, our host, begins a podcast to interview people with interesting professions.  she starts out with dr. richard strand, a paranormal investigator whose mission statement is to debunk all things paranormal.  he even has an institute that offers a one million dollar prize for proof of the paranormal, which he has never even come close to having to part with.  while alex is interviewing him, she comes across a handful of black vhs tapes: the only cases that strand hasn’t been able to definitively solve yet.  the technology to disprove these incidents simply hasn’t come far enough, in his opinion.  needless to say, she never moves on from dr. strand and the mystery of the black tapes.  each episode, alex investigates another of the black tapes and much later on realizes it’s possible that they’re all connected.  oh my god, i almost got chills just writing that, it’s so good, it’s so real, because dr. strand is such a good anchor to reality.  alex will occasionally lose her skeptic’s perspective; dr. strand does not.  and once alex starts experiencing intense insomnia, making you realize your narrator might not be so reliable?  things somehow manage to get even murkier.  i really, really adored this one.  it’s paranormal set in the most normal of normal worlds, only making it that much spookier.

5. wooden overcoats

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  okay, well, if you’ve ever watched black books?  this is kind of like black books, aka one of my all-time favorite shows.  rudyard funn is just as incapable and universally disliked as bernard black, which was all well and good when the village of piffling vale (which is very nearly a town, you know!) only had one funeral home to choose from.  unfortunately, that’s not the case anymore.  eric chapman has moved his funeral home right across the street and stolen all the business from rudyard, his embalmer (cum part-owner) and twin sister, antigone, and georgie, their assistant.  to add insult to injury, he’s charming and universally adored by everyone except those at funn funerals.  very british, very ridiculous, and very funny!  WE GET THE BODY IN THE COFFIN IN THE GROUND ON TIME.  (well, like that one time they did.  [coughs])

6. ars pardoxica

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  i listened to this one pretty slowly, for me.  it’s very much plot over character, at least in my opinion.  which is fair since there’s quite a lot of plot and set dressing to establish.  we’re following (dr.) sally grissom, a scientist from the twenty-first century who accidentally creates time travel and ends up stuck back in the 1940s.  think a bombs and eisenhower.  it was always interesting, and the paradoxes created by the time travel experiments they kept doing were fascinating (i love time travel stuff because of the paradoxes it creates) but i didn’t get really ravenous for it until season two, which is when i really felt it picked up speed.  you’ve got anthony stuck in a literal CAGE - a “blackroom” bubble set outside of time, sally trying to garden (oh god), a gang consisting of a veteran, a (former) widow and time doubles trying to bring down ODAR (the company sally used to work for, and that anthony still does) and esther sliding down the ladder of morally unsound one determined rung at a time and it makes for a REALLY grabbing audio drama, eh?

7. the strange case of starship iris

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  i’m already in love with violet liu, all right?  she’s a science officer on starship iris–well, what was starship iris.  when we first join violet, every single one of her crew mates has just died in an explosion on the pod they were traveling off ship with and the starship iris is in its last throes as well.  luckily(?) a passing ship comes along with a plan to get her to safety.  this has a real illuminae vibe to it (which is an amazing book btw) and all the characters are already so freaking likable.  it’s only on episode two and already shaping up to be a favorite!

8. the orbiting human circus (of the air)

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  if there’s a more heart-warming podcast out there, then i haven’t run across it yet.  first of all, julian koster’s voice is so vulnerable and soft that i would use myself and everyone i know and also puppies as a shield against everything terrible in the universe for him.  second, the rest of the cast - leticia especially - is just as freaking talented.  the premise is that julian is the janitor at a radio show that broadcasts from the top of the eiffel tower and has strange and impossible acts every night, from tale-telling crickets to singing saws to the orkestral, a bird that can play every orchestral instrument (except that it refuses to play the viola, because reasons).  it’s fun and cute and breaks your heart with happiness regularly and often!

9. alice isn’t dead

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  this is a horror podcast about a truck driver who is looking for her missing wife.  jasika nicole has to have one of my favorite voices around and having it be so heavily dependent on that makes me ridiculously happy.  throw in the story-telling of joseph fink, the depth and cohesiveness of his writing, and there is nothing not to love here.

10. within the wires

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  this is really sufficiently creepy considering it’s not often overtly creepy.  this is set up as a series of relaxation tapes, which progressively get more and more interested in helping the listener break out of the facility in which she’s being kept.  super chilling at times, because the voice is so calm and the action so dangerous.

11. welcome to night vale

canon lgbt+ is a ✓.  okay, well, what more can be said about this at this point?  if you’re not listening to it, you’re wrong.  why wouldn’t you want to visit a town that can’t be visited and where every conspiracy theory is real and a part of everyday life?  yeah, everyone knows about the vague yet menacing government agency, steve carlsberg, you’re not hitting on anything new there.  there’s a dog park that doesn’t allow dogs, angels that are never to be identified as angels, mountains that aren’t real, a glow cloud that–ALL HAIL and a love story so complete and perfect that it can and will utterly steal your breath at times.  go, listen, inhale.

I didn’t realize how misinformed I was about skincare until I started practicing a little witchcraft. I thought that apricot scrubs were good, oil was bad, and that cystic acne couldn’t be treated topically. Oh, was I wrong. About a year ago, I befriended a 30 year practicing witch who had about 14 years cosmetology experience at the time. Having just discovered Paganism myself, I constantly bugged her about both subjects. She taught me some basics and I’ve been using them ever since. They really work. And it’s a nice and easy introduction to spells if you’re looking to get into somethin’ spooky.

First things first: Apricot scrubs are TERRIBLE. Any facial scrub that has granules you can see is going to put tiny cuts in your already irritated face and make your acne more susceptible to infection/irritation. She recommended using a mixture of coconut oil and baking soda to make a paste that will very very gently remove dead skin without causing redness. People with rosacea should avoid using any type of scrub, even though this one is very mild. Never exfoliate more than 2-3 times a week, and never ever do it two days in a row. When you’re done, make sure you put as much oil as you can in the trash can- rinsing it off in the sink will clog the drain over time. And remember- the thicker the paste, the more coarse the scrub will be. Scrub using gentle yet wide circular motions, timing yourself at about 60 seconds.

Oil is not bad for your skin! Coconut oil has tiny molecules unlike other oils, so it can penetrate hair and skin better than other oils. Coconut oil is excellent at pulling your natural facial oils out of your pores without stripping moisture. After you use the scrub, use a warm, damp wash cloth to gently wipe away the oil and baking soda. You should always moisturize immediately after cleansing, but I’ve noticed that after using this cleanser my skin doesn’t ususally need it. Besides coconut oil, lavender oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil are also very good for acne prone skin. Tea tree oil can be diluted heavily and applied to spot treat, but do not use more than once a week in small quantities or it will make your skin itchy and red. Always always always moisturize before putting on makeup by the way!

As for the face masks! I have a face mask recipe that will reduce my pore size by like 80-90%. Seriously. If I used it once a week I’d have perfect skin, but I don’t, so even when my skin is at its worst, this mask still kicks ass. I don’t have exact measurements for everything (or anything really) so please be patient with yourself when making them. But that’s the beauty of this recipe- you can change it to fit your skin problems with a little research and a trip to the health food store. Side note: Do the mask right after you use the scrub. Otherwise it won’t work as well.

The base of the mask is this magical powder called kaolin clay. I buy it in bulk at the health food store and it’s cheap as hell. It’s just a mild clay that turns to putty then hardens in ten minutes. I probably use ¾ cup, maybe even a full cup for a mask. Just depends on how many liquids you want to include. Star out small and add as you go.

After putting a starter amount of clay into a small bowl, I set that aside and start on the liquids. I like to use tea instead of water. I make a teensy amount of hot water then pour it over green tea, rose petals, and calendula petals. Green tea is anti-inflammatory, rose balances pH, and calendula is great for skin. Try to buy organic so you’re not dousing yourself in pesticides. I set these aside to brew. The less water you use, the stronger the tincture, and the less time you need to wait.

I only have a few essential oils, but if you do a little research, it is super easy to pick out some that are good for skin and are non-comodegenetic (won’t clog pores). I take my little bowl of clay and start adding a few drops of lavender oil, a few drops of grapeseed oil, a squirt of sweet almond, and two tiny drops of tea tree. Other options are ylang ylang (good for oily skin), chamomile (very soothing), and clary sage (for reverse aging and puffiness). I would say maybe 5 oils would be a good maximum, just because you need room for the tea.

Add the tea by holding the flowers back with a spoon and pouring tiny little amounts into the clay and oil mixture, stirring frequently so that you don’t get it too thin. You want it the texture of Elmer’s glue. If a few petals get into the mask, that’s fine. Some people add loose green tea leaves to their masks straight up, so whatever’s clever. Then just smear the mask on, avoiding the eye area if you used tea tree oil, and leave it on for about 10 minutes. It will harden so if you want to drink anything you should use a straw, and the mask will flake a bit towards the end, so be aware of that. Once the ten minutes is up, just splash wet water on your face to turn it back to glue texture, then wash off with warm water. This may take a while. Then after you dry your face with a clean towel, check out your pores in the mirror! This is my favorite part because there are patches of my skin when I don’t have visible pores at all, and where I do, they are so much lighter and smaller. The essential oils must penetrate the blackheads or something, I have no idea, but it does what no Biore strips or Clean and Clear scrub have ever done before.

Make sure you moisturize after ! I have really bad acne so I follow up with benzoyl peroxide (doctor’s orders) and a light drugstore moisturizer to keep my pores looking like this as long as possible. I recommend doing this mask once a week at least, but definitely no more that once every three days. And don’t pop pimples! Give these remedies some time and you will see a huge difference.

One more thing: Rose water. I make my own, but it can be bought at $30 a bottle at Sephora. However, I don’t use mine that often because it’s non-organic, so unless you have the hookup on organic roses, you might want to steer clear. Basically all it is is rose tea. I get roses from my boyfriend frequently, so I hang them up to dry thoroughly and then collect the petals in a burlap bag. Once I have a grocery bag’s worth, I toss them in a pot to boil. There are lots of ways to do this online, but mine is very simple. Just bring petals to a soft boil, steep until it’s dark red, then let cool. I store mine in a massive mason jar in the refrigerator. I leave some petals in there to make it stronger, but you can strain them immediately if you like. Definitely strain them before using the water to make you life a little easier.

I use rose water as a toner between cleansing and moisturizing. It’s cool from refrigeration, which calms any puffiness, and it apparently balances pH. Another cool thing about it is it moistens your face right before you moisturize. Lotion doesn’t always add moisture to your skin, it often just retains what moisture you have. So if you moisturize damp skin, you’ll retain more moisture. Seems weird but it works.

The witchcraft comes in where you want it to. I like to put intention in the stirring; meaning I stir right if I want to embrace good vibes and positive outcomes, stir left if I have something negative on my mind that I want to banish. I think there is magic in the herbs and oils themselves so I don’t get too fancy or chant, but it is totally a thing for people to chant while making these kinds of elixirs. Tumblr is full of awesome little rituals! I just tend to keep it simple.

So anyways this is basically everything I know about skincare, and it was all taught to me by a woman in her late thirties that looks like she’s 24. Kudos if you read this entire thing! Seacrest out.

Hey, where I can find your effect stars (gif) with your edit here => /post/153925981468/defenders-smoke-bomb-photography

@cpn-america also asked me something similar, so I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and make a tutorial!

how to make something like this:

or this:

you will need:

  • photoshop cs6 (or cs5)
  • a basic knowledge of said program
  • the top gif from this post (this is where you get the sparkly effect, so just drag it onto your desktop)

If it's ok to ask, could you please show how you draw Bendy? I love how it turns out when you draw him, but I'm struggling a lot to draw him and it gets really frustrating sometimes :(

I always find it a bit weird getting asked stuff like this, since I don’t really have a specific process with how I go about drawing, or at least it’s one that I don’t think about while drawing. Still, I tried putting together a tutorial if it helps.

I’ll put my notes here if it’s a little too hard to read.

1) Start with a circle(head), and a bean (body). In the game, Bendy’s body looks more like just an oval, but I figured for actions and posing there would be more of a bend. (* Since we don’t know for sure if Bendy has a neck or not, adding one is considered optional).

2) Add the eyes (”Pacman Eyes”) and the frame for the face. Try to imagine the McDonald’s “M” or a heart. Next, add a line and a circle at the end as a guide for where you want to place the arms and hands. Make sure the “shoulders” are pretty close to the top of the body, since they’re going to be slightly covered by his bow tie

3) Next is the horns. They should arch around and connect at the base of the circle, forming the rest of the head. For the top of the horns, try to imagine the arc that a crescent moon has. For the arms, try to keep the elbows of the arms curvy. Most rubberhose cartoons kind of had these noodly looking arms. Drawing fingers on the hands were sort of the same way, though instead of noodles, they kinda looked more like sausage links. Also start outlining the legs and feet.

4) Finishing touches! Add some more detail to the shoes. Bendy is sort of imitating characters like Mickey or Bimbo, so the shoes need to look pretty big, and the toe part of the shoes needs to look large and rounded - as if someone pumped air into the shoes to inflate it like a balloon. Don’t forget to add a little triangle shape in the shoes to make it look like his shoes have heels. Add Bendy’s smile and his bowtie, which should sit at the top of his body.

5) Final touches! If you haven’t already, add three little lines on the back of Bendy’s gloves. When adding black, the face, gloves, and bowtie stay white. And you’re done!

Some quick musings on the new update

thelostspecial.com

Here is the text, with my first thought comments in bold:

I was going to draw this out longer but the truth is, I’m bored.

OK

There is no Lost Special. There never was, and there never will be.

And you know this objectively?

Once again, in their need to keep this midnight train going, TJLC fans created something out of nothing.

Even if that is that case, why do you care?

Seeing this obsession with “The Lost Special,” even though series 4 was clearly over, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to run a sociological experiment with a vicious fandom in denial.

Steven brought it up, not us.  Also, even if the series is over, that doesn’t mean it’s over.  They’ve repeatedly said they have through series 5 mapped out. It was only in December 2016 they started hinting at “we don’t know, this could be it.” Sure Jan.

My poorly assembled website took not more than twenty minutes to cobble together (as some people rightly pointed out) and very little effort to maintain.

This is a lie.

“By the pricking of my thumbs (something wicked this way comes)”- I edited an ominous message into the code and title, referencing the Macbeth quote used in The Six Thatchers. It was strange to see how many people didn’t recognise the “pricking” quote and even criticised the website because it allegedly didn’t call back to Sherlock in any way- except that I was directly quoting a series 4 episode.

Except most of us did recognize this?  What about your dancing man code reference to Unto the Breach?

Watching fans defend how shoddy the website is, in their need for thelostspecial to be real was especially funny. It was also funny to see the people who guessed the website was fake and said as much, but didn’t even care because they desperately needed something to hold onto, with Sherlock over.

Whichever, why do you care?  Why would it be funny to you?

Then there’s the people who clocked that thelostspecial.com wasn’t “real”… and yet never question their own dedication to TJLC and/or the existence of a fourth episode of series 4, concepts entirely created by Tumblr.

The lost special site was only one of hundreds of indications something is fucky.

Anyhow. Next, I threw a random bunch of numbers and photos out there to see how people would scramble and react, and you didn’t let me down. Mostly I chose the first photo I found of a character that I liked the look of, in Google; there wasn’t real logic. I re-used some images out of laziness. I used an online generator to make the Dancing Men/Henry V code post.

So the meanings we found in everything, tying it somehow back to Sherlock, or ACD canon, or anything else were all coincidences?

What do we say about coincidences?

40, 27, kra, the various “hints” you think you found on the website and found countless possible meanings of, they were chosen at random. Even the elephant photo was chosen at random. It wasn’t until after I edited it into the main website photo that I discovered the poor thing was named Mary and had been shot and executed for killing a man (on 9.13.16. Everyone overthought that one too much.)  So I used that info because it was serendipitous. “The universe is rarely so lazy?” Friends, the universe is often lazy.

“They were chosen at random.”  “The universe is rarely so lazy?

Sure Jan.

When I added a black image with five pixels of colour to the website, you did not let me down. People played with the image until they became convinced it was QR code spelling something out. It was just five meaningless pixels of nothing, created in MS Paint.

Yet you did the whole thing in 20 minutes.

The static gif was taken from a YouTube video of TV static from some movie, with an old Moriarty close-up thrown in.

We know, 28 days later.  With Moriarty loaded in.  Again, whole thing in 20 minutes.

The photo of John and Sherlock sitting in the watery 221B, I got it from Farfarawaysite.com, and scaled it down a little because the photo was large. That’s it. I didn’t change the proportions in any way, or alter the colours, or add anything to the photo. Anything you saw in it, you imagined. I left the big black header on the website as a hint to keep your eye on those, since the thing I changed on 2/11 was in the similar Twitter header.

”That’s it. I didn’t change the proportions in any way, or alter the colours, or add anything to the photo. Anything you saw in it, you imagined.”

Like Murderous Mary being photoshopped into the back picture? Sure Jan: http://whimsicalethnographies.tumblr.com/post/156824256785/221bloodnun-whimsicalethnographies

I changed the plain black header of the Twitter to a black one with a word embedded in it. The profile photo was changed to a plain black photo with XX hidden in it. No one bothered checking it, though clearly the account was active again, so I changed the profile photo to show the Xs, as a hint to look deeper. Finally people found the “clue” today, not that it matters. The word spelled out there is another blind alley that leads nowhere.

Then accept all our follow requests.

MMTE: The source code message was a hint toward Murderous Mary the Elephant, which some of you guessed but no one looked for it.

murderousmarytheelephant.tumblr.com

(Don’t bother trying to access it, there’s nothing in there.)

DON’T LOOK NOTHING TO SEE HERE, EVEN THOUGH THERE’S A PASSWORD.

There was no set schedule for changes to thelostspecial. I used intermittent reinforcement to keep people frustrated but coming back for more. That’s why I added and removed things at unexpected times. There is no pattern.

Ok?

For people wondering, wow, why would anyone take so much time to do this? Well, I didn’t. Creating the plain black squares with a few letters, throwing a message into the source coding,  and uploading the new website photo of John and Sherlock took maybe 5 minutes. Creating a side blog with no posts and keeping it private takes one minute.

Except the photoshopping you DID do as established would have taken more.  Even searching for the first image you found would have taken time.

Overall, it takes less than twenty minutes a week to do this, once it was set up, because really? You do all the work for me. You all did what TJLCers do best- you took a bunch of random data, inflated it into something much more complicated than it really was, and created your own narrative out of it. Even knowing it might be nothing, and was probably just a fan-made site, you’ve still allowed yourselves to get worked up over it and allowed yourselves to hope. You’re reading into nonsense and finding clues where there are none, and naturally most of those “clues” pointed exactly where you wanted them to point to. Confirmation bias at its finest.

Well all I get from this is that we’re smarter than you are.

Learn from this.

Stop falling into conspiracies. Trust yourself when you can see that something isn’t real or likely. Alternately, find something that doesn’t make you feel sad or heartbroken.

Seriously?  “Trust yourself when you can see that something isn’t real or likely.”

Instincts are to be trusted, John.

Also, my instincts have gotten me into a pretty good place. I’ll keep trusting them, thanks, and they tell me something is fucky.  We’ve seen this episode before.

Goddamn you’re arrogant.

A few final notes:

“And in conclusion *jerk off motion*

I was somewhat entertained by the several dozen times people attempted to reset the password for the website and access the control panel. If I was petty, I would’ve logged your IPs and reported you to your ISP. (Don’t worry, I didn’t. I don’t care that much.)’

You cared enough to look.

I didn’t send the “mole” anons or any other messages on Tumblr. I think other fans decided to join the game. I imagine they’ll continue until they get bored, too.

Read: I can’t say why everything else is fucky too.  Must be more people like me.

The only twitter account connected to thelostspecial.com is twitter.com/thelostspecial. I have no idea who runs the “contact” twitters but I’m positive they’re fan accounts. (If you think BBC-sanctioned accounts would post like that, I have a bridge to sell you.) As for my twitter, I set up the thelostspecial twitter account, followed some BBC-related accounts and left it alone for a week while TJLC fans went wild trying to suss out who I was following. That’s all I did with it.

Then accept my follow request.  Seriously, YOU’RE SO CLEVER I need to follow you to learn your secrets.

I didn’t start thelostspecial Instagram account. Someone else did that, I don’t know who.

Nobody asked.  Actually, I didn’t even know there was an instragram account.  Did anyone else know?

And if you enjoyed hunting, try a legitimate online riddle game, such as Amnesya.com for a challenge! All the fun, none of the TJLC and fandom “fucky” business.

Well, since you brought up “fucky business,” why are they screenshots of the Shrewd Living posts in the “Museum?” Did you do that too? Wow.  In charge of a scam website.  Oh, you don’t know about that?  Then why put it in there?  Why, John?

Nah.

Sherlock Series 4 is over. This is the end.

Thanks for playing TheLostSpecial! Goodbye and God bless.

Seriously, we’ve seen this episode before.

WE’VE SEEN THIS EPISODE BEFORE.

Medical School—A Not-So-Quick Walkthrough

Hey humans! Aunt Scripty here. This post is a submission by Brittany, whose Tumblr handle I surprisingly don’t know. This post came through the Submissions Box. If you’re interested, I encourage people to submit articles to appear on the blog! [though it may behoove us both if you message me first, as I have a few posts in-progress and I don’t want us to duplicate efforts]

Anyway, give Brittany some props! This is an awesome post, and I’m CRAZY thankful she wrote in! And now, Brittany, take it away!

Disclaimer: This applies to the American medical system only, and may be biased by the author’s experiences.  Also note that this is the process for becoming an MD, not a DO (both MDs and DOs are fully licensed physicians, but DOs have a stronger focus on the musculoskeletal system and their schooling is slightly different).

Disclaimer Part 2: I swear, this was SUPPOSED to be a brief post.  Oops.

The quick and dirty:

—4 years of undergrad

—4 years of medical school, 2 in the classroom and 2 clinical

—3-5 years of residency depending on what they specialize in.  Can be longer if they add subspecialties or fellowships.

The in-depth description:

Getting in (Premed student)

Acceptance to medical school is hard enough to start with.  There’s an estimate that 75% of applicants are qualified, but only 50% get in.  Your character doesn’t need to major in biology or pre-med, but there are pre-requisites: two semesters each of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, and physics, plus a couple biology electives, and I think psych and statistics have been added on since I graduated, but don’t quote me on that.  That’s pretty much 2/3 of a science major right there, so you can see why a lot of people just end up with that.  During spring of junior year, they’ll take a giant standardized test called the MCAT that covers all of those topics and is notoriously difficult.

Along with the classroom work, they’ll have to get clinical experience—most commonly volunteering, shadowing, or working as a medical scribe, but you can get creative—and usually do a little research of some kind.  Med school is hard and being a doctor is harder; they want to know that you’ve got an idea of what you’re getting into.  If your character does all that right, they interview with medical schools during the fall of senior year, and hopefully get accepted!

Year 1 (MS1)

Your first year is classroom based.  You get daily lectures on very complicated medical topics, with relatively little patient interaction this year.  Schools will include more practical classes as well, including a cadaver dissection, pathology (where you train to look at cells and understand what a healthy vs. diseased one looks like; some schools are old school and have people still work with slides and microscopes, others like mine do it virtually), and standardized patient encounters (where they hire actors to come in and work with us so we can practice histories and physical exams and basically get a baseline on things like “what does a normal lung sounds like?”).

Patient interaction varies from school to school, but generally is pretty low.  You can shadow a certain specialty you’re interested in, volunteer in free clinics, join different clubs/interest groups, or do various electives that will focus on teaching certain aspects of patient care (nutrition, medical Spanish, global health, etc.), but you have to go look for them.  If I hadn’t done any of that, I would have seen maybe… two patients a month?  Most students will branch out with those other opportunities, though.

Year 2 (MS2)

Similar to MS1 in that you’re still on classroom duty, still not seeing many patients.  Typically you learn more sensitive physical exams this year (urological, gynecologic, breast, etc.), and you’re finished with the cadaver dissection, but things are otherwise the same.  At the end of your character’s MS2 year, they’ll take their first board exam, called STEP 1.  You can take it one time only unless you fail.  Low scores or a fail are really frowned on, and can limit the specialty your character goes into, so you can imagine the pressure.

Year 3 (MS3)

Yay!  Your character’s now ready to be let loose on the clinic/hospital!

Boo!  This year kicks. your. ass.

This year is all about making your character feel like an idiot putting what your character’s been studying for two years into action.  The schedule is broken up into rotations, which are periods of 4-8 weeks where students focus on a specific specialty each time.  These courses are: pediatrics, family medicine, psychiatry, ob/gyn, neurology (usually), emergency (sometimes), surgery, and internal medicine.  Difficulty varies by rotation, with surgery and ob/gyn being the worst (12 hour days with only one day off a week, max; surgery adds in occasional 24 hour shifts too, just to spice things up).  Occasionally you’ll land on a nice one, like psychiatry, with 10 hour days and free weekends.

On a more day-to-day level, third years are usually part of a small medical team that cares for a set of patients.  The team consists of an attending (fully licensed physician), residents (physicians who are training in their particular specialty), and medical students (MS3s and MS4s both).  MS3s will usually get a small subset of hospital patients they care for every day—take their histories, do their physical exams, list what you think they have, and suggest treatments/tests—but because you’re not licensed, you basically take all that to the attending/resident who hears you out and then says ‘yea’ or ‘nay.’  As the year progresses, hopefully you hear more ‘yeas’ and fewer ‘nays.’

At the end of this year/the beginning of 4th year, there’s another board exam called STEP 2.  Half is your typical multiple choice test, with a numeric score—much like STEP 1—while half is a pass/fail practical where you work with standardized patients.

Year 4 (MS4)

Hopefully by now your character has figured out what they want to specialize in.  I can go over specialties in another post if anyone’s curious, but the biggest ones are basically the same as the ones listed as core rotations during the MS3 year.  There’s a giant application/interview process that takes up the lion’s share of the summer/fall/winter for interviews with residency.  At the end of the process, everyone ranks the residencies they interviewed with from most to least favorite, and at the same time the residencies rank their interviewees from most to least.  The whole thing goes into a giant computer algorithm to give as many people as possible as high a choice as possible, and then on the same day of the year, at the same time, MS4s across the country take a deep breath and open envelopes saying where they ‘matched.’

In addition, with those pesky core rotations out of the way, the character has time to take electives that may or may not be applicable to their future specialty—me, I’m going for emergency medicine, so I’m doing several rotations in EM as well as EMS, but I’m also doing a two week course forensics because it sounds awesome.

Otherwise, 4th year is widely known as the ‘take a breath’ year.  People get married or have babies during this time, travel, and generally start to act like human beings again.  There’s space in your schedule that’s off—it’s generally intended for interviews or studying for STEP 2 if you’re taking it late, but people will use it for anything.

Residency

Not going to give too much detail about it, seeing as how your character is technically a doctor at this point, but residency is basically 3-5 years where your character trains in a specialty—yes, they’re physicians, but they don’t know everything about their particular field and need trained.  You’re in this weird limbo between student and employee; you make a salary (although a very low one considering the number of hours) and can prescribe medication, perform procedures, etc., but an attending is responsible for you, you still attend a weekly lecture, and you can’t practice independently.  To give you an idea of how hard these years are, they recently had to limit things like “don’t make residents work more than 36 hours in a row,” and “don’t put the doctor who graduated med school a month ago in charge of an entire floor of ICU patients for a night with no backup.”  Incredibly, some of the old-school attendings think said changes are a bad idea and will produce doctors who are “weak.”

Also, you thought your character was done with standardized tests?  You sweet summer child.  STEP 3 has to be finished before you can complete residency, and is usually done during intern year.  The good side of this is, you’re in a residency now, so as long as you pass, no one cares about the score.

Random notes:

—This is a sample timeline, following your ‘traditional’ student.  It’s becoming more and more common for people to take a couple of years off after undergrad and apply for medical school after that.  If you want a chance for your character to gain some non-medical life experience (travel, other skill sets, becoming a parent, etc.), this is a good chance for them to do it!

—I’ve been asked by a writer I know in RL how young someone could potentially become a doctor.  I think she wanted to put in a prodigy kind of person.  The problem with that is that medical schools don’t just look for smarts, they look for maturity—imagine having someone who looks like they can’t drink yet tell you you’ve got a terminal disease, and you can see why.  That said, there are a couple of accelerated programs, where I’ve seen people graduate undergrad a year early and go straight into medical school, or where they condense medical school into three whirlwind years because the person’s on track for a specific primary care residency.  So if most people graduate medical school at age 26-27, you could have someone out at 25 or maybe 24, but probably no younger.  And remember, they’ll still need residency training from there.

—Not gonna lie, medical school is incredibly difficult.  That said, I think the best students/doctors are the ones who maintain an outside interest or two, so don’t feel like your character can only have medical skills (*cough*Grey'sAnatomy*cough*) .  Give them a few side interests to maintain their spirit.

—I can give more detail about any and all of these if anyone asks; these are supposed to help you understand what your character has had to go through to be a doctor, not be a full detail spiel.  I can also do ‘day in the lifes’ if someone’s writing a med student character and wants an accurate description, but let’s be real: most people want to write the master, not the pupil.

Real Studyblrs

In honour of @academla‘s post, I just wanted to add to the real studyblr movement to welcome those who are starting new studyblrs.

Don’t worry about having all the stationery, spending money to study at cafes and owning macbooks.

As a student that has always performed well academically, I can tell you that my favourite pens are Papermate Inkjoys and Kilometricos, and I prefer the 0.38mm gel pens that I got in a 20-pack for $3 on eBay over any Muji pen (they’re actually kinda scratchy).

Although I love pretty stationery, it’s something I buy as a gift for myself from the money I earn working part time since I don’t really spend on things like eating out, makeup or clothes shopping outside uni expenses, and even then I try and shop around to get a good deal. Even though that puts me kinda in the middle of the studyblr spectrum, I would never tell anyone that you need any of this to succeed academically.

In fact, I never had any of it when I actually was in high school (Muji wasn’t even in Australia then). I only started buying small things after I got a job, and even then it’s sparingly. I know for a fact that I spend less than 1% of the money I earn on stationery, and less than 5% of all I earn on everything leisure related (learned money management from the best after all!). And I know all the Saving Money Tips about uni :) (see Part 1 here and Part 2 here).

My favourite time management and organisation method? It’s actually not my planner or bullet journal, it’s Google Keep (here I expound upon its virtues), and it’s completely free.

My study desk? It didn’t use to have anything on it, I gradually added one special thing at a time to it over the years. Bought the whole flower bouquet for $1 on eBay, had the ribbon lying around at home, the hourglass from Target was something we’ve had in the living room for years. I am a music lover who listens to music everyday without fail, and I love the cheap speaker my dad bought me (works really well).

The one actually expensive thing, my Kikki.K calendar, my friend bought me for my birthday because she said that I wouldn’t splurge my money on it and she wanted to treat me.

Laptop and phone? Bought my laptop at the beginning of uni (not a MacBook); 4 years later it’s a bit short on battery life (can’t even last 3 hours on a charge when I have 4 hours of lectures) but still works really well; I’m never intending to buy a new laptop since I’m graduating after this year. Phone is a Huawei, don’t own a dslr camera. But I’m happy with both of these, especially when I’m not someone who texts all day and night.

Writing pretty study notes? I basically don’t, but the few times I start, I write one page, just to motivate me to continue. After that, I just go back to typing on my computer and save some paper and my own time. And I actually hate mind maps, sorry mind-mappers.

So yeah! I have always strongly believed that education is for everyone. So all you studyblrs out there, don’t ever doubt yourself!

Hello 2017

Wearing  ✶  Lime Ricki Daisy Bralette and Daisy Ruched Bottom  ✶  Wotoos star shaped face tattoos

It’s the first day of 2017 and warm enough already for a little splash in the pool! The beginning of the year is also fraught with the traditional onslaught of diet and weightloss ads in every corner you look, so I thought it would be timely to post some positive inspiration to help counter the toxicity that us fatties are routinely assaulted by around this time. The moment the year turns around, you see it screaming it you from billboards, newspapers and even browser ads. ‘New year, new you!’ ‘Resolve to be a skinny minnie this year!’ ‘Time for a liquid diet “cleanse” after that gluttonous Christmas!’ Well, here I am in my daisy print bathers, with stars on my face and unflattering curves everywhere else and I haven’t made a new year resolution to lose weight since the year 2007.

It hasn’t been easy all the way, fending off well meaning advice from acquaintances and relatives, and having to tune out friends unloading their weightloss plans onto me. Thankfully, and mostly because I’ve been doing it for so long, this sort of selective vision and hearing comes as second nature to me. But when the lovely folks at Lime Ricki swimwear asked me if I’d like to try out one of their swimsuits and talk a bit about feeling body confident as a fat woman, I realised that it would actually be helpful to share my tips for keeping sane and preserving your mental health (and confidence) in this month of weight based penance (ugh!)

1. Take out the trash

By which I mean the glossy magazines promising miracle ‘cures’ on the cover, the tabloids and their websites, the Instagrammers selling diarrhea tea, basically any media that’s not fat positive. Back in 2007, I was more than a bit addicted to celebrity gossip - it was entertaining and a welcome distraction from my undergrad texts. However, once I realised how badly the tales of celebrity weight loss and gain affected my own body image, I started weaning myself off it. And the more time I spent on the fat positive internet, the more I started abhorring popular media and the diet culture it sells. After a point, I didn’t even want to browse through ONTD anymore. Especially because I could find all the fashion inspiration I wanted from the fat internet, and that too on bodies that looked like mine.

2. Surround yourself with fat positive media

Admittedly, the fatshion community has a very different face now than it did a decade ago, and there’s no onus on plus size bloggers to be fat positive as well. You’ll find countless plus fashion bloggers who advocate weightloss and think nothing of documenting their diets, but there are just as many anti-weightloss bloggers you can follow if you’re looking for some positive reinforcement to go with your daily fashion fix. If you’re looking for somewhere to start with, my blogroll on this page has quite a few awesome internet peeps who are just as fat positive as they’re fashionable. And if anyone you’ve been following for a while, and whose style you love descends down the slippery road to diets, don’t hesitate to unfollow them if that’s what you need for your sanity. Just putting that out there because I feel kind of bad whenever I have to do that!

3. You don’t have to listen to your friends’ diet talk

I have friends who get down on their bodies, who can’t stop talking about how badly they need to lose weight. Most of us have friends like that. It’s especially distressing when they’re people you’re close to and genuinely care about, people whose concerns you can’t just shut down without an explanation. I’ve found that a gentler approach works best in these situations. All my friends are extremely aware of my stance on diets and weightloss - I mean, I’ve only been banging on about it for the last decade or so! Yet they still try to talk to me sometimes about how they’re planning to lose weight. In situations like this, this is pretty much what I tell them: Listen dude, it’s your body, you do whatever you want with it. But you know how I feel about weightloss, so there’s no point telling me about this because I’m just going to space out. You’re an adult, making your adult choices, so go ahead and make them *shoulder pats* I have literally zero inputs to give here. *firm shoulder pats*

Back when I was first learning about fat positivity, I made it my mission to bring all my closest friends into the fold. How could I let them suffer in the purgatory of dieting and self hate when I’d found such freedom in the  alternative? Unfortunately, that’s not how people work. And ultimately, everyone has to make their own decisions about the path they want to follow, whether it comes to weightloss or the rest of life itself. You can help them along the way, but the decision of whether to be diet free or not is theirs to make.

4. Spend some time with yourself

One of the things I realised when I was getting to grips with body positivity was this: I didn’t actually know my own body. I used to avoid looking at mirrors, especially when I was naked, I only ever saw myself from one single angle, looking down at my boobs, belly, a bit of leg and feet. Whenever I came across a candid photo, I would be aghast because is this really how everyone sees me? To accept my body, I had to know it first. From every possible angle so that I couldn’t take myself unawares. Back then, I had my ex to photograph me naked, but if you don’t have anyone like that, use the mirror, use your webcam! Take photos of yourself with the self timer, standing, sitting, in silly poses and unflattering ones. Examine those photos, find the parts of your body that you love, and write down what it is that you love about them. Then find the parts of yourself that you don’t love as much and figure out something positive to say about them as well. Write that down too. Keep going back to those photos and notes whenever you can, and keep adding to them. If I’d taken these swimsuit photos 5 years ago, I’m sure I’d have been cringing at my flat butt and lumpy thighs entirely because I wasn’t familiar with them. But now I know exactly what I look like from the back, or sitting down. The body I have is the body I expect to see in photos because I’ve seen it so many times now. I know exactly how my belly folds, where my things dimple when I’m walking. These are regular, everyday features to me now, not some kind of a bogeyman waiting to jump out at me from photos I didn’t expect.

5. Set a positive example by eating

This one’s for those of you who have already taken the first steps towards body positivity, those of you who are feeling secure enough to give a very public middle finger to diet culture. I didn’t find public eating easy at the beginning, especially since I had a history of eating disorders. As my BFF recalls, one of her first memories of me was at the University canteen, with an apple in one hand and a cigarette in the other, steadfastly refusing any other food because ‘that’s all I needed for lunch.’ It took a while to get to the point where I could go out with her and triumphantly demolish platters of food in public. What I noticed, though, was that whenever I was out with a group of people and a couple of them were heading towards the ‘I think I’ll just have a salad’ territory, they ended up ordering what they actually wanted and enjoying it once I’d set the lead by unabashedly eating what I wanted. And even if you’re still a way away from being able to eat freely in public, I think that just eating the food you want with relish and joy and savouring every bite without guilt is the biggest FUUUUU you can hurl at the diet industry this time of the year. So treat yourself to the food you love and actually want to eat, listen to your body instead of the ad pointing out your supposed failings. And remember, food has no morals attached to it, it’s we who burden our plates with them.

Art School | Nathan Bell (Los Angeles, CA)

As one of the shows featured in our April First Thursdays, Los Angeles-based artist Nathan Bell’s upcoming solo show ‘Mixed Feelings’ will featured 400 works using materials such as french paper, coroplast, and mixed media.  Self described “introverted over thinker with a design background,” Bell expresses himself through the painted word, or rather words –a whole lot of them. Through experimenting with “language, typography and aesthetic,” Bell’s work focuses on thoughts, ideas, wordplays, inside jokes, reflections, all of which he has been creating for the last two years!

We’re excited to feature him on Art School where we find out more about his works and words! From working with new materials to his process to what we should expect in his solo show ‘Mixed Feelings,’ which opens Saturday, April 22nd at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles.

As promised, the tutorial on how I make my flashcards!

The flashcards I use are from HEMA. They are 10.5 x 7.5 cm, ruled and made from very sturdy paper. I recommend getting pre-cut flashcards because cutting them yourself 1) will cost you a lot of time and 2) you probably won’t have thick enough paper available

  • I like to use flashcards for information that is easily summarized into a handful of bulletpoints and doodles!

  • I start off with a nice front card that tells me clearly what subject the cards are for, the content and the date.

  • The color of the header sets the color code for the entire set of cards. This way, it’s easier for me to retrieve lost cards.

  • A key/legend can be added to the back of the front card. Here you can for instance write down all the frequently used abbreviations. Since they might be unusual abbreviations, you may want to jot them down here so you won’t forget what they mean!

  • Then come the actual flashcards. I start off with the course abbreviation and card number (this is also to retrieve lost cards and prevent the cards from getting switched).

  • Then I write down the question. It needs to be long enough for the answer to fill the card, but also not too long. Sometimes I will add below that what kind of answer I need (e.g. 5 examples, 2 names and 2 main points)
  • Add doodles! I like doing this whenever the material (and space) allow it. Add anything that will help you remember the facts.
  • I get the questions and answers from lecture slides, my own notes or e.g. from a textbook.

Studying with flashcards is easy:

  •  Read the question on the front
  • Answer it in your head, but out loud if you can
  • Check the answer(s)
  • If you got the right answer: go, you!
  • If you didn’t get it right, read the right answer thoroughly. Then put it back into the stack, a few cards later.
  • Repeat :)
  • Do not, I repeat, DO NOT make a separate stack for cards you keep getting wrong. You’ll only wire your brain to remember that this info is something that you do not know. Keep repeating them together with the other cards, and keep going until you get (almost) everything right!

I hope this will help you guys to start studying with flashcards. They can be immensely helpful as they encourage active learning and you can carry them basically everywhere!

Study on!

A Way to You Again: Part 5

Summary: Bucky and Y/N have been fairly successful at keeping their relationship hidden from the rest of the Avengers. That is… until Nat walks into the kitchen one night and finds Bucky kissing Y/N. While Y/N is relieved that their relationship is out in the open it soon becomes more complicated than she could have ever imagined.

Author’s Notes: Thanks to the lovely @melconnor2007 for the request. The last scene killed me. I always love hearing from you guys <3.

Sorry it’s out late – my nap turned into a mini hibernation.

I felt like a hypocrite. As much as I had dreaded someone from the Avengers knocking on my door – I was finding myself wishing for it. I wanted Bucky to fight for me – I wanted him to prove me wrong. I needed him to. Days went by in a blur as I debated with myself on what I should do. Maybe he was still on his mission? Maybe Tony had told him to let me be? I couldn’t find an adequate excuse for it.

“Are you sure he won’t just show up at your door?” Nicole asked one morning – arching her eyebrows in curiosity.

“I’ve only ever talked to him about the cottage once… and it was just in passing,” I shrugged miserably.

“Well maybe he’s trying to get ahold of you? Have you checked your phone?” she asked casually.

“No – it’s been off since I got here,” I added miserably.

“Well maybe you should…”

“NO,” I snapped at her. As much as I wanted him to fabricate from thin air – I also really didn’t want to know why he hadn’t told me. I had made up my mind that I wouldn’t like his reasoning, and that was that.

I walked into the living room rubbing my eyes wearily. I had somehow managed to doze off as I snuggled in the oversized bed reading my dad’s beaten copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five.” I stretched my arms as I peered around the room – spotting Nicole on the couch in front of the fireplace. “Hey,” I muttered quietly. Her head immediately snapped in my direction as she quickly hid her hands. “What are you? OH NO. I told you no!” I roared as I went to snatch the phone from her hands. “Now they’ll know where I’m at! Dammit Nicole!” After a brief struggle I victoriously grabbed the phone from her hands and crossed my arms – huffing angrily.

“Ten missed calls, one  voicemail, and twenty text messages,” she stated as a fact.

“Huh?” I asked confused.

“Those are all from this Bucky guy. It seems like he might care,” she shrugged casually. I rolled my eyes annoyed and stomped back into the bedroom determined to hide there for the rest of the night.

As I curled up in the bed I couldn’t help, but feel like the phone I held in my hand felt like a lead weight. Should I go ahead and look? There was no way that Tony hadn’t locked onto where I was within fifteen minutes. Bucky, Tony, or Steve would be here in a matter of hours – so there was no point in holding out any longer… I needed to go ahead and face whatever he had to say so I could prepare myself. I reluctantly lifted the phone to my face – it was best to get the voicemail out of the way first. I clicked on the message before putting the phone on speaker and listened.

Bucky’s voice permeated the quiet of the room. My heart sank as I listened.

“Y/N… Tony said that you left a few days ago but wouldn’t tell him where you were going… I… I know something happened between you and Nat. Please call… please let me explain. I don’t… I don’t want to lose you over this. I… I’m sorry,” his voice was so incredibly sad that I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep myself from crying. When he paused at the end of the message my heart had done a backflip. I had never realized how much I wanted to hear him say that he loved me – but my hopes fell as flat as his voice as the recording ended.

I flipped through the the text messages quickly.

-Hey! I’m coming home – can’t wait to see your beautiful face.

-Steve just talked to Tony and he said you left???

-Is everything okay?

-I tried to call but it went straight to voicemail. Y/N please call me.

-Y/N, it’s not what you think. Please call me doll. Please come home. I miss you. I need to explain.

-I know I fucked it all up but please let me explain.

They kept going – each one a different variation of the one before it. I felt sick. It had been easier to accept everything when I had cut myself off from him. I sighed heavily. The truth was so glaringly obvious – I had never really accepted what had happened – just prolonged the inevitable. As I was flipping through the rest of the texts Bucky’s picture illuminated the screen. I froze in absolute panic – he was calling and I had accidentally just hit “answer.”

I stared at the phone – completely frozen in fear.

“Y/N,” Bucky’s voice said softly from the other end. I remained silent. I didn’t know what to do or what to say. It was as if I had suddenly turned into a statue. Bucky took my silence as a sign that I was going to listen and suddenly it was as if a flood gate had opened from his end of the conversation. “Doll, I am so sorry. I don’t know what all happened, but I know this is my fault. I swear I was going to tell you… I was going to explain everything, but I was just so afraid. So afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing and losing you… because you make me so happy. I haven’t… well I haven’t been this happy in a long time,” he paused for a moment waiting for my response. I sat in silence still unable to articulate the hundreds of conversations I had played out in my mind between us the last few days. “Doll…. Please. Please say something,” he pleaded – the edge of desperation cutting into his words.

All of my faculties seemed to have been taken over by some unknown part of myself that was unwilling to be hurt the way I had been hurt before. “There’s nothing left to say, Bucky…. Goodbye,” I said quietly before ending the call. I didn’t even know the words that were spilling out of my mouth until it was too late. I sat dumbfounded at myself as I stared at the phone in my hand. Why would I say that? What had I just done? Tears welled in my eyes as I realized that I could have very well ended everything then – he was trying and I had shut him down.

I jumped slightly as the door opened and Nicole came into the room. She looked at me apologetically as she held up two wine glasses and a bottle.

“I thought maybe we could use this tonight?”

I nodded sadly as tears streamed down my face.

Succulent Guide

Congratulations on becoming a proud plant parent! Welcome to to the wonderful world of succulents and cacti, here is a small guide of how to take care of your succulents properly and tips on how to maintain a healthy, happy plant based on personal experience. (・ω・)ノ

🌵🌵🌵🌵

General Knowledge

Firstly, here is some general knowledge on succulents that will (believe it or not) help you greatly when it comes to taking care of your plant.

  • Succulents and cacti are in the same family! This means there are many different kinds and like dry places with little water
  • The world “succulent” refers to the plant’s fleshy, thick leaves. They are like this to retain water.
  • Because succulents are cacti, some can be pointy and have spines (like aloe!) so in general, be careful.

That’s basically all the general information you need to know that will help your plant grow.

🌵🌵🌵🌵

Watering your plant:

Although most people believe that succulents thrive on neglect, they really don’t, and need almost as much maintenance as a regular house plant.

MY RULE OF THUMB: When the leave look thin, water the plant.

This rule of thumb is a bit of a last resort. If your plant’s leaves are withered or thin, it needs a lot of water.

Regularly, I water my 2" succulents with about 2 tablespoons of water A WEEK.

In winter, succulents and Cacti go through a dormant phase and don’t need to be watered as often, but I found this information as not useful because when I went as little as 1.5 weeks without watering some of my plants in the winter, they’d start to wither.

Remember, succulent leaves should remain fleshy! And watering them often is the key to doing this.

If you happen to forget to water your succulents for up to three weeks and even beyond, do not worry. At that point, the plant will ration it’s water until you water it.

If you happen to do this, do not immediately think that you have to drown your plant in water to make up the weeks you missed. For a 2" succulent, 2 tablespoons or less is the key. These types of plants can only take so much water at one time.

🌵🌵🌵🌵

Soil/Potting:

Repotting Cacti and Succulents is a lot of fun, especially when you get decorative pots or creative with potting ideas.

Some people like to use teacups, and other people use plain old terra-cotta pots.

Whatever the case may be, succulents and cacti like drainage.

So your teacup doesn’t have a drainage hole? No problem.

It is ideal to pot your plant in something that has drainage holes, but if it doesn’t, adding rocks to the bottom of whatever it is you’re using will help greatly.

I have small, 2" white square ceramic pots for my babies, which have a singular, small drainage hole in the bottom. Because I wanted more drainage, I used a few rocks on the bottom, and filled the rest of the pot with succulent and cacti potting mix.

It’s also healthy to keep some of the soil from the original pot to mix in with the potting mix.

When repotting my cactus plant, I preferred using thick rubber gloves to repot rather than gardening gloves because I didn’t want the thin spines to prick me.

🌵🌵🌵🌵

Sunlight/Heat:

I normally keep my succulents on the windowsill over my kitchen sink because it gets the most light in the house while being indirect.

This is the key to good sunlight: light, but indirect. So if you have a windowsill where the sun crosses over it throughout the day, that is the ideal place for your succulent. In winter, keep your succulents inside! And on the sill of a west facing window is ideal because the light is not too harsh in the afternoon.

TIP: make sure to rotate the pot so the plant grows straight.

If you do not have much sun, although I have not tried this, I know some people grow their plants under special lamps which work just as fine.

As far as heat goes, heat was not much of a problem for my plants except for my one pesky Echeveria nodulosa ‘Painted Beauty’ which I had named Rory.

Rory was not a fan of being near an open window, and since I had gotten my succulents in January, it was cold outside. A few rare days of warmth would occur in February which called for an open window, and any time he was near it, he would wilt.

And although Rory is due for what looks like propagation, he is my smallest plant to this day and I don’t want to go onto that step for him yet.

🌵🌵🌵🌵

Propagation

When I noticed my plants reaching for sunlight, they’d bend towards the window and grow very tall and their leaves would space out. Soon, the bottom leaves would die and need to be plucked off and I’d be left with a long stem, a few spaces but still alive leaves, and a small rosette on the top.

This means it’s time for propagation. When I first read on how to stop my plants from getting so leggy, results appeared calling it “decapitation” where you would cut of the head of the plant and leave a stump.

This sounded very scary to me and I waited until a month before I tried to look for answers again and found propagation as the solution.

There are basically three parts of propagation.

  1. the stump
  2. the rosette
  3. the babies (which are actually a bunch of little parts).

The first step to propagation is to remove the bottom leaves from the plant completely from the stem by gently twisting them off. (Even if they are alive)

Place the leaves on a wet paper towel on a pan after they have calloused over and dried out (takes about 2-3 days). You may notice the the root of the leaf may already be growing roots, and if it has not, it will eventually. From each leaf you will grow a new baby rosette and have a forest of succulents! The babies make great gifts. (Note that not every leaf will be successful in growing a baby). This process takes about 3-4 weeks.

For the left over plant, you now have a super long stem with a rosette at the top. Cut the rosette leaving some stem on it and submerge the stem in water after letting it callous and dry out (takes about 5 days) For mine, I submerged the rosette in a medicine cup filled with 2 tablespoons of water. Soon, roots will appear so you can repot the rosette. This takes 2-3 weeks.

Then, cut the rest of the stem the is in the original pot down to a stub. After the stub callouses over, it will start to regenerate new babies around it. This takes about 3 weeks.

When it comes to propagation, it takes time and patience.

🌵🌵🌵🌵

Tips:

Here is where I was going to put any tips I had for growing plants but I kind of mentioned them throughout my spiel. In that case, here is where I will reiterate my most important tips:

- Water your plants once a week or when the leaves look less fleshy.
- 2 tablespoons of water a week for 2" plants (some species may need more or less)
- For repotting cactus plants with spines, it’s ideal to use rubber gloves instead of gardening gloves
- Rotate the plant so it grows straight!

Those are my best tips. There really aren’t any tips on propagation since its a hit or miss kind of ordeal.

Second time out/back from seeing Beauty and the Beast **SPOILERS ABOUND**

(aka bear with me b/c this review is a week and a half late and I can actually comment on stuff I loved throughout it. It might end up being long af so I’m sorry in advance bc I talk about when everyone got cast too. This is probably filled with typos.)

PPS: I am the minority who loved it deeply, and don’t have nothing to complain about. Except a few words on the group of people who sat beside me tonight and would not shut up during Evermore and the transformation scene aka MY MOST FAVOURITE DISNEY KISS EVER)

So lets get down to it. I LOVED this movie the first time I saw it. As I have stated numerous times through tags. Ill be real here I was skeptical as hell about this being turned into a LA remake. But as the casting was announced my worries went away completely?

BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST WHAT A FABULOUS CAST! I don’t even know who to start with honestly? All of them ARE JUST SO GOOD???

We’ll just start with the most obvious choice (and the one who had the most flack after being cast)

And that is the absolute wonder and light of my life DAN FUCKING STEVENS

BECAUSE THIS GUY. OMG. ANYTHING HE DID IN THIS MOVIE JUST…BLEW. ME. THE. FUCK. AWAY??? And I’m just so grateful and forever indebted to him for bringing quite possibly the best reinterpretation of the Beast/Adam to life. Like honestly the Beast is my favourite character ever he has been since I was 5 and I just…NO AMOUNT OF WORDS COULD DESCRIBE IT. (actually I have TONS of words and i’ll get more into this later) but I’m moving on for now.

Emma Thompson I love Emma T so much I have since forever and she’s so charming and soft hearted as Mrs Potts. Say what you will about the accents used in this movie I loved that she was English….

And Luke Evans I knew about him prior to this and vaguely, through watching him in The Hobbit and that god awful movie version of the Three Musketeers (same can be said for Dan, b/c before I watched some of his other stuff I had only know him from Night at the Museum 3)

Anyway…

Luke brought such a great energy to this character and I loved how Gaston started out as an okay dude but slowly dissented into his villainy? The way he portrayed this was astounding b/c as soon as the script called for the change up he handled it with such ease? And wow I just love Gaston so much in this movie.

Josh Gad we gotta talk about FUCKING JOSH GAD I’m not getting into the knitty gritty of things since its not my place to comment on such but I LOVED HIM IN THIS ROLE SO MUCH MORE THAN I LOVED HIM IN FROZEN? He’s so hilarious.  AND HIS LINES WERE A+++

He just brought so much classiness to LeFou and he just made him so likable?  and the fact that HE FOUGHT TO KEEP IN THE SNOWMAN GAG FROM THE ORIGINAL VERSION. I honestly hope they give me all the deleted scenes from this movie.

FUCKING EWAN MCGREGOR AND SIR IAN MCKELLEN AS COGSWORTH AND LUMIERE I just WOW WHAT A GREAT ACTING COMBO (aka all ive ever wanted from the remains of my dull life.)

AND AUDRA MCDONALD AS GARDEROBE AND STANLEY ‘ACTUAL KING OF EVERYTHING HE IS IN’ TUCCI as a sassy piano THAT WAS LITERALLY CREATED FROM SCRATCH FOR HIM? (more on these two later as well because omg they are everything to me and stole my heart??)

AND KEVIN  FUCKING  KLINE omg I loved him so much in this movie just PERFECT honestly.

I’m trying to keep this short so I can move on to my next bunch of thoughts. And not just yap about the casting. (Bullet points listed below, bc I’m getting into the changes) And to begin:

THE SCENARY AND CGI IN THIS MOVIE WERE FUCKING ASTOUNDING? I DIED? IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, say what you want about what the beast looked like. Dan Stevens exhausted himself entirely for 2-3 months just to make the beast into a computer animated caricature. AND I LOVED THE ANIMATION ON THE CASTLE STAFF? I also really loved the backstories for everyone it just filled in so much that I found lacking in the original. Just everything that filled in all the plotholes were A++

  • THE PROLOGUE and it being narrated by the ENCHANTRESS.(Side note: I loved the technicalities and consequences with this new curse)
  • DAN STEVENS GRACING ME WITH HIS FAB TALENT AND NOT SAYING A THING DURING SAID PROLOGUE AND JUST LAUGHING EVILLY AND YET FLAWLESSLY GETTING THE POINT ACROSS THAT THE PRINCE BEFORE MEETING BELLE WAS AN ABSOLUTE PANSY ASS DICK? Also him in the black get up with the black swan make up?? a lookTM
  • THE CLOSE UPS OF GARDEROBE AND CADENZA AND THEIR LITTLE DOGGO FRU FRU BEFORE THE CASTLE IS CHANGED INTO OBJECTS?? THE FACT THAT FRU FRU IS THEIR DOG?
  •  THAT WHOLE OPENING SEQUENCE IS INTENSE AS HELL
  • Omg when Gaston stepped on Belle’s cabbages THERE WERE LIKE 3-4 KIDS THAT GASPED. It made me smile omg.
  • When Maurice and Phillipe were heading out of town and in the woods heading to the castle. One child was like “aww look at the horsey” I mean…
  • WHEN MAURICE IS IN THE CASTLE AND MEETS CHIP everyone laughed like honestly I was blessed with actually being a a cinema room full of people that laughed and reacted to stuff b/c last week when I went there were crickets, some child mad an off hand comment later on in the movie when Beast invites Belle to dinner and he does the smileTM I kid you not I heard “look his tiny teeth” I love his tiny fangs so much hes just so awkwardly endearing altogether.
  • OKAY OKAY OKAY SO WHEN BELLE HEADS UP TO THE CASTLE TO FIND HER DADDO AND SHES AT THE CELL IM PRETTY SURE THEY PLAY THE SCORE TO EVERMORE? its like lowkey but I NOTICED IT AND IT WAS GLORIOUS.
  • all the songs in this movie and the additional lyrics woven into the film added 30 years to my life.
  • THE WHOLE “GASTON” NUMBER WAS FABULOUS AND EVERYTHING AND MORE ITS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL VERSION THAT WHOLE MOMENT WHEN THEY BREAK TO CLAP AND STOP ON THE TABLE AND THE FACT THAT THE SCORE FOR THAT BIT SOUNDS LIKE A CAVALRY CHARGE AND THE WHOLE “SAY IT AGAIN” BIT AFTER THE “I USE ANTLERS IN ALL OF MY DECORATING” LINE.
  • BUT LIKE THERE IS MORE BECAUSE OMG THEY GAVE COGSWORTH STUFF TO SING DURING “BE OUR GUEST” INSTEAD OF JUST “SOMETHING THERE”. LIKE THE ONLY OTHER TIME HE SINGS IS IN THE ORIGINAL DURING “HUMAN AGAIN” I love the flawless smooth transition from SIR IAN MCKELLEN belting out the COURSE BY COURSE bit of that verse and Ewan being like ONE BY ONE immediately after? honestly I always fist bump during that moment when I listen to the soundtrack. AND THE WHOLE NUMBER IN THE MOVIE IS JUST SOO GREAT. I love my crotchety old clock and dramatically extra candlestick. the best BROTP.
  • Ok, so the people I sat beside started laughing during little Adam’s part in Days In the Sun and omg I was off hand annoyed because it ruined my chance to start the water works even though I still cried.
  • BEAST TRASHING ON ROMEO AND JULIET WILL FOREVER BE ICONIC to me I LOVE WELL READ BEAST SO MUCH I’m tired of the ‘but I wish he would have stayed illiterate’ statements.
  •  EVERYONE. AND WHEN I SAY EVERYONE I MEAN EVERYONE ERRUPTED INTO LAUGHTER WHEN BEAST HAULED THAT BIG ASS SNOWBALL AT BELLE’S HEAD.
  • ALSO any time Beast gave Belle his little smiles??? they were so pure and cute
  • So seeing this movie a second time the yellow dress discourse is quiet frankly ?? to me I loved it AND I LOVE THE FACT THAT DAN STEVENS MADE THE BEAST UTTERLY DISTRESSED OVER ASKING HER FOR A DANCE IN THE BALLROOM? (THAT WHOLE SEQUENCE IS SO FUCKING GORGEOUS)
  • LIKE…I JUST LOVE HOW MUCH LIFE AND PERSONALITY AND 3 DIMENSIONALISM HE GAVE HIM B/C I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THIS PORTRAYAL UNTIL IM DEAD AND IN THE GROUND.
  • Which brings me to the make up scene everyone laughed and I almost could not stop laughing at the scene change.
  • Emma Thompson’s version of Beauty and the Beast is so wonderful. I love it.
  • THE FIRST TIME I HEARD EVERMORE IN THE MOVIE I WAS STUNNED INTO SILENCE AND JUST DAN STEVENS AGAIN GRACING ME WITH SUCH RAW EMOTION AND TALENT. SIGH I JUST LOVE THAT WHOLE SEQUENCE, I WOULD HAVE LOVED IT EVEN MORE HAD I BEEN REALLY INTO THE SECOND TIME SEEING IT BUT ALAS THE PERSON BESIDE ME WAS LAUGHING AND I WAS JUST LIKE… RUDE. HONESTLY THOUGH THE PAIR OF PIPES DAN STEVENS HAS HE HAS SUCH A BEAUTFUL RANGE AND WHEN HE SINGS ANGELS DESCEND FROM HEAVEN, AND JUST THIS WHOLE FUCKING SONG GAVE ME THE LAARGEST EARGASM THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT. LIKE HONESTLY GOD BLESS ALAN MUSICAL GENIEUS KING MENKEN
  • Honestly everyone is at war against whether Josh or Dan’s version is better and I just prefer Dan’s version so much. I found Josh Groban’s version too slow even though he sings like an angel too.
  • tt.tt  THE MOB SONG and the castle staff going up in arms was always my fave in the 90s version. And it did not disappoint.

Bullet points are done I am heading into paragraph summarizing my thoughts on the last 30-40 minutes. BECAUSE THIS SHIT WAS UNREAL, and HARROWINGLY DARK. AND I LOVED THESE CHANGES FROM THE ORIGINAL.

THE WHOLE CASTLE TURRET CHASE SCENE WAS SO FUCKING GOOD I HAD MULTIPLE HEAR TATTACKSTHE FACT THEY SWITCHED UP THE HUNTING KNIFE AND REPLACED IT WITH A PISTOL that moment when the Beast gets shot oh god.

Like when Belle comes back and sees the Beast and he literally SHOUTS OUT HER NAME I am crying?? and deceased?? and then he gets shot 2 more times honestly this was equally amazing and heartbreakingly brutal.

And let me tell the whole concept of the castle actually breaking apart as the petals fall, that is just such a neat spin and I love it.

So like I said I found the twist with the curse fascinating because in the original the only thing it focused largely on was the Beast, Mrs Potts, Plumette, Lumiere , Cogsworth and FruFru. I LOVE THAT THE MOVIE CEMENTED AND ROUNDED ALL OF THE CASTLE STAFF AND GAVE THEM A LARGER SPOLIGHT THAN IN THE ORIGINAL LIKE THE CASTLE STAFF MAKES UP HALF OF THE CAST/CHARACTERS FOR THIS MOVIE. For the past week and a half people have said why was the inanimate scene so long and drawn out? Because the castle staff are the greatest and the only family the Beast has besides Belle that’s why… the end. Also I ship the hell out of Cadenza & Garderobe, Plumette and Lumiere AND MR AND MRS POTTS OMG.

THE WHOLE INANIMATION SEQUENCE HAD MY ENTIRE SOUL IN SHREADS, IVE ??? NEVER?? CRIED??? SO MUCH IN MY LIFE??? LIKE LUMIERE HOLDING PLUMETTE IN HIS ARMS AND SETTING HER DOWN GENTLY AND MRS POTTS NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO CHIP AND CHIP ALMOST FUCKING BREAKING BUT THE COATHANGER CATCHING HIM THE LAST SECOND AS HIS SAUCER BREAKS?  CADENZA AND GADEROBE REUNITING AND HER TELLING HIM THAT HE IS BRAVE JUST BEFORE SHE FADES AWAY AND HIM BEGGING HER NOT TO LEAVE HIM?? I MEAN THAT IS THE TEXTBOOK DEFINIITION OF PURE AND UTTER DEVOTION RIGHT THERE FRIENDS.THE SADDEST THING ABOUT THEIR INANIMATION SCENE IS THE FACT THAT THEIR DOGGO FRU FRU BECOMES INANIMATE BETWEEN THEM. COGSWORTH AND LUMIERE SAYING GOODBYE. NEED I SAY MORE.

BUT THEN THE TRANSFORMATION SCENE HAPPENED AND I COULD NOT BREATHE I LOVEED HOW THEY FILMED THIS SCENE AND HOW EMMA AND DAN PLAYED THIS SCENE. NEVER IN MY LIFE WILL I LOVE ANYTHING AS MUCH AS I LOVE THIS SCENE.

Everyone is like “well why didn’t they say anything?”

I LOVED that HE DID NOT NEED TO SAY ‘BELLE, ITS ME?”

this iconic masterly filmed sequence only needed to be filmed with sheer BODY LANGUAGE, VISUAL EXPRESSIONS AND EMOTIONS COMING FROM BOTH DAN AND EMMA AND I JUST AM ASTOUNDED? EVERYTHING THEY FELT COULD BE SEEN BY THE AUDIENCE I FELT THAT SHIT DEEP IN MY SOUL AND IVE ANALYZED EVERYTHING LEADING UP TO THE KISS. FROM THEIR LOOKS OF DAZED WONDERMENT AFTER BEAST TURNS BACK INTO A HUMAN, AND HIS LITTLE HUFF OF RELIEF AFTER HE INTIALLY TURNS AROUND AND FACES EMMA, TO DAN’S HEAVY BREATHING, BELLE PLAYING WITH HIS HAIR AND HIM THREADING HIS FINGERS THROUGH HERS IN TURN? THE FACE TOUCH AS SHE IS LOOKING FOR ANY SIGN THAT THIS IS INFACT THAT GUY SHE LOVES?? (HONEST TO GOD THAT SHOT OF DAN HE IS ALREADY A BEAUTFUL GUY BUT HOLY HELL HE LOOKED SO GOOD IN THIS SCENE) THE CLOSE UP SHOT OF HIS EYES. HER RELIEVED LAUGH AND THE IMMENSE GENTLE CAUTION BETWEEN THEM JUST BEFORE THEY KISS AND THAT GIANT ASS INHALE DAN TAKES AS SOON AS THEY MAKE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONING THE FACT THAT ONCE THEY DO KISS HER HAND MOVES FROM HIS CHEST TO HIS WAIST.

THIS WHOLE SCENE IS LITERALLY THE LIVING EMBODIMENT OF THE PATRICK STEWART ACTING GIF

I LOVE THIS KISS SO MUCH HONESTLY ITS MY FAVOURITE DISNEY KISS.

The best was when they all became human again and reunited and were left with parting gifts from the curse. I laughed out loud when they showed Stanley Tucci with no teeth.

UGH AND THE LAST SCENE WITH CADENZA BEING SO FUCKING HAPPY AND SMILING AS THE WIFEY IS SINGING again.

EMMA AND AUDRA singing the final number omg the whole coronation dance scene was everything.

AND JUST THIS WHOLE MOVIE IS FABULOUS AND I NEEDED THE DVD TO BE RELEASED YESTERDAY.

Faux Cuffs and Collar Tutorial

Hello everyone!

This is a tutorial to make a detached collar and (faux) French cuffs. I intended this to be for Playboy Bunny-style costumes, and that’s a good use for them, but I can see people wanting to make these for fashion purposes or other costumes, as well.

The collar is functional and buttons at the neck, and the cuffs are functional but use a snap on the inside and decorative buttons sewn to the outside to imitate the look of cufflinks. This makes them easier to deal with during a con day and makes it easier to either make custom “cufflinks” or to use what you have in your sewing stash rather than buying or attempting to make actual cufflinks.
