and probably language

Just got called a “Selfish bitch” for not wanting my art reposted and that if I didn’t want it stolen to “Not Fucking post it.” And this didn’t come from the person I reported for copyright infringement.

I was re reading The Serpents Shadow and remembered Zia speaks Arabic. Don't know if she's 100% fluid or not but it got me thinking, Arellashid that talk in their native tongue and understand each other but aren't speaking the same language so everyone is confused

zia is fluent! it’s her first language, she’s from an egyptian village!

i think reyna and zia primarily communicate in english considering it’s their only common language (as far as we’ve ever seen them speak, at least), but i feel like it’s only natural to want to teach your long-term partner your native language, or to want to learn your partner’s.

i feel like they probably mesh their languages together once they start to become more skilled with each other’s

idk I just love how we Young People Today use ~improper~ punctuation/grammar in actually really defined ways to express tone without having to explicitly state tone like that’s just really fucking cool, like

no    =    “No,” she said.

no.    =    "No,” she said sharply.

No    =    “No,” she stated firmly.

No.    =    “No,” she snapped.

NO    =    “No!” she shouted.

noooooo    =    “No,” she moaned.

no~    =    “No,” she said with a drawn-out sing-song.

~no~    =    “No,” she drawled sarcastically.

NOOOOO    =    “No!” she screamed dramatically.

no?!    =    “No,” she said incredulously.

the finished version of disappointing_your_abuela.jpeg, based off my favorite headcanon of Lance deciding to teach Keith a little Spanish, and suffering when Keith picks it up annoyingly well and looks up how to say some steamier things ;3c

(note that my Spanish is absolutely atrocious and if I screwed up feel free to send me a message and I’ll fix it.)

I feel like it’s often overlooked that Seungkwan’s the member with the best language skills. Even though there are lots of jokes about his English, it’s actually really good for a non-native speaker? Especially his “r” pronunciation. Predebut he had to memorize a whole song with Mandarin lyrics (and he still remembers it), and during their concert in Japan he had to memorize a good chunk of speech in Japanese and he delivered it really well (like I could understand him and that’s saying a lot LOL), not to mention he knows a lot of vocabulary from all of the above languages.

since I was talking about languages headcanons, let me share an actual fav of mine: Yuuri actually started studying Russian when he first fell in love with Viktor (’s skating).

A starry eyed little Yuuri, glued to the small bulky television in the living room of the onsen, watching the recording of a young Viktor’s Junior World Championship in Bulgaria, his ponytail whipping around as he twirls and cuts the air in a perfectly executed jump; there’s nothing more Yuuri wants than to be like him, to know what this person made of starlight looks like inside. How can this beautiful angelic boy do what he does, how is it even possible to glide so effortlessly on the unforgiving ice when all Yuuri can do is fall and cry and bruise?

So he starts info dumping, collecting scraps of rare skating magazines, reading article upon article about him and interviews; but then again, there’s only a certain number of them that’s in Japanese, a little more in English, of which Yuuri’s knowledge is still wonky at best. Most of them are in Russian, because you know, Viktor is Russia’s prodigy, so of course. It’s not easy to find them.

Their dial up connection cable whirrs ominously and sucks money and energy, but he doesn’t desist, finds some approximation of a skating fan site with grainy images and pages and pages of minuscule writing, so much it makes his head hurt. Even then, he doesn’t give up. Yuuri is twelve, and stubborn, so he goes to the library and brings home a dictionary, sits down in front of their outdated computer and squints at the screen, flips through the yellowed pages and reads, painstakingly, his vision going fuzzy in between kanji and cyrillic. It’s not the best, but it’s all worth it when one day he realizes he actually can recognize some of the words without even cracking open the ratty dictionary.

When Yuuri is eighteen, he places his heart and dreams in Detroit. He slices himself open and drips red on the pavement of the rink, strips his feet raw and never stops thinking about the force that drives him, locks a wish too big to be contained into the small space between lungs and ribcage. He signs up for a Russian Language course.

When asked, he tells Viktor he had to choose an extra class to take in college. He doesn’t tell him about the little kid hunched over a shitty dictionary at two am begging to know more about his idol (he’ll tell him, a whispered confession in the middle of the night, but now it’s too much, too early). He doesn’t tell him that he knows exactly what he’s doing when he brings a tub of ice cream home and Viktor beams delightedly, exclaims “that’s my favourite!” Yuuri smiles, replies he had a hunch it would be. The old article is clear in his mind, a stolen piece of memory of a Katsuki Yuuri that wanted nothing more than to know exactly what Viktor Nikiforov’s favourite ice cream flavor would be, not knowing there’d be a time where it would become as simple as asking. Viktor laughs, makes grabby hands at it. “I love you,” he sighs wistfully, wrapping his lips around the spoon, and Yuuri flushes, takes a spoonful too, feeling incredulous and warm.

The wish that was trapped inside crawls up his throat and takes off in a huff, no more than a whisper. It has no use now, for it’s fulfilled, at last.

The ice cream tastes better than anything he’s ever had.

(It’s strawberry.)

Ok so Fall Out Boy knows that a lot of their fans are of depressed/suicidal kids that have been through a lot and the fact that in Champion they’re basically tricking these kids into singing “If I can live through this, I can do anything” and scream it at the top of their lungs until they can relate to it and I think that’s fucking amazing

au where lance is a famous youtuber and blogger and keith is a minor one but a big fan of lance (and also has a even bigger crush on him) and decides to send him this message – minus the i love you – but not anonymously ofc and then keith regrets his whole life bc of a simple misspell

lance mentions that on his next video and keith decides to answer by saying “he can be silly sometimes, no offense, but i’d never send him a hate message” (really keith stop trying to pretend you’re not a fan of his goofiness)

lance takes full offense on that and they start going back and forth on their bantering both on youtuber and tumblr with silly little interactions like lance reblogging a picture of an alien holding a knife angrily and tagging it as #keith (he may or may not have done his research on what are keith’s interest. for no reason at all, not interested, nope.) and and keith doing a live outside and “oops, sorry lance” when almost stepping on poop and etc

but people would begin to catch on how keith’s voice softens whenever lance is mentioned and how lance’s eyes softens whenever keith is mentioned

keith, being a fan and all, knows for a fact that he and lance live in the same city, so he gathers courage and asks lance out. not entirely, what he does is tell lance they should do a video together someday, so he says they should meet up to talk about it and maybe eat something, which of course lance answers is “talking? eating? are you asking me out on a date?”

keith doesn’t answer right away because well shit he is asking him out on a date, subtly, but surely and he doesn’t know what to answer. lance, seeing his message visualized but not answered thinks he went too far and immediately says that jk but yeah let’s meet up

and so they do, and on that day lance takes a picture of them – keith looking slightly amused and looking at lance with quirked eyebrows, lance looking to the camera, bright smile and leaning into keith – and posts on Instagram with a single hashtag, #klance

and their video together? gayer than ever; lance is telling one of his crazy childhood stories and keith is just staring at him with a lazy smile and soft eyes, not even realising it but, of course, everyone else realized it, so the fans made lots of edits and shitposts like “i want someone to look at me the way keith looks at lance” and while keith is mortified for being called out like that, lance is sitting at home, slight blush on his face, “oh”

and it’d be so soft, everyone who have eyes would notice the growing affection between them just from their videos and pictures together, how closer they’d get each video and how more comfortable keith would be with lance so close to him in every picture, and the fans would make metas and analysis of that. they’d read everything, of course, but never together. they’d read it in their homes and never mention it to the other, too embarassed (but that wouldn’t stop them from reading a klance fanfic together, one that keith had to close because nope, no, absolutely not, i can’t do this anymore lance, blushing furiously and angrily

lance doesn’t have a moment when he realizes he likes keith, like it came out of nowhere, he knows they’ve passed the friend line long ago, it just happens naturally; they’re sitting on keith’s couch after a session of recording two videos, (one for lance’s channel, other for keith’s) and lance looks at him, his eyes are closed, he’s blissing out. lance sighs with a smile, “i really like you, y'know”, keith opens one of his eyes to look at lance, a knowing smile on his face, “yeah, me too” as they entrelace their fingers and keith cuddles up to lance, sighing happily. “now i know what that girl from starstruck: my boyfriend is a superstar feels” keith says, making lance almost die laughing

after some time together, they’d decide to move in together and make a channel together and being absolutely most diabetic and amazing couple ever, making videos singing love songs while drunk such as always by bon jovi or all about us by he is we – dancing too – and keith everyday thanks for misspelling that ask on tumblr

  • what she says: im fine
  • what she means: why is nyota uhuras job being constantly underestimated and made out to be less important/less impressive than it really is. uhura not just a spaceship receptionist. she takes most of the ships main communications with other ships and other planets. she is capable of speaking multiple romulan dialects, klingon, english and swahili, probably among several other languages that she has a working knowledge of. uhura translates codes and identifies sonic anomalies/subspace fuckery. her job is not just answering the fuckin space phone like damn.

There’s something about Sense8 that you will only notice if you are actually familiar with all/most of the original languages that should be used and that’s the way the narrative is written is completely based in the original language. I have seen a couple of post about how Lito or Sun’s dialogues were weird or too artificial and that’s because it’s a direct translation of their natural speech.

It’s probably less strong in Lito because he lives in a world of Soap Operas, he lives and breath dramatic characters so his character is overdramatic and fake (something he totally owns and accepts) but when you listen to Sun, especially pre-jail Sun, you can see that her English is a direct translation of her Korean. The way the sentences are constructed, the emphasis and tone… she is not a Korean woman living an American life, she is a Korean woman living a Korean life in Seoul with the not-so-uncommon problems in the Korean chaebol sector. If you know a lil bit of Korean you are able to translate every single one of her sentences to Korean and they look authentic, the same way Lito’s sentences half the time would work way better in Spanish that they do in English.

(Edit: several rebloggers have confirmed that, indeed, Wolfgang also talks a translated German, which only confirms the theory. All of this also explains the fact that every single actor comes with their original accent, they don’t try to mimic American/British accent but they have kept the accent they would have if they were talking in their original language and we were only listening to their English because we are connected with the Sensates. Sense8 tries to turn the viewer into another Sensate, in some sort of Jonas.  I would very much appreciate if someone can shed some light about the Swahili and the Hindi, though)

(Edit2: Thanks to r-ed we have confirmation that Kala’s English is also a translation from the original Hindi. As it happens with Korean, and probably Swahili too, these languages’ structure are pretty different from English, while German and Spanish have more similarities structure-wise) so the translation has been enriched to be understandable, but the basis of the Hindi language as well the accent has been respected. As I commented on an earlier post, the writers have understood that language/accent is part of the characters, but adapting their language to English they would have erased this side of them that is as important as their cultural inheritance, so it’s important that they only translated the language into a more understandable language, considering they interact with each other in a mental wave length, making it possible for each one to understand the other without the need to use the same physical language).

Michael, Lana and Andy  have done an amazing research work and even though I’d be forever happy to see them talk more in their own languages I am so satisfied with the way the have handled the language issue.
