Hello!! This may be a weird question but I too am heavily interested in birds but unlike you, I cannot draw them as well. :,^( If it's not too much work (if it is just ignore this, i don't mind), do you know of any good references or sources to learn more about birds from facts to anatomy? I know this is a pretty wide range so again, I totally understand if you can't! I just thought it was worth an ask. Thank you so much!!

i don’t really have any specific reference places but here’s some things i do.

drawing birds is arguably one of the hardest animals because of their feathers. unlike fat and fur that folds to the body in a way that’s usually readable to whats underneath, feathers sort of create a ‘bubble’ around the body which makes a lot of body parts indistinguishable to where one ends and another begins. so its important to always think in terms of skeletal anatomy:

birds are dinosaurs and therefore reptiles. looking at birds this way, it’s a lot easier to see their evolution.

with that in mind, say we wanna draw this dude. owls are pretty tough because their outward appearances are so deceiving.

we’ve got a neutral pose, feathers are generously surrounding most of the body so its no sweat, we don’t really know whats going on. but we can hide it. but now we want to make him move and look cool. without really knowing whats going on we might get stuck on something like this:

its always kind of stiff and frustratingly unrealistic. mostly this is because we just don’t have enough knowledge of the skeletal structure to work with. eyeballing anatomy on our first drawing might get something like the left, more than anything people aren’t generous enough with leginess of birds:

owls do indeed have regular proportioned necks with the rest of their bodies. and their skulls are like that of any other stereotypical raptor under their mask of feathers (minus their freaky eye sockets and ears)) they can open their mouths wide just like a hawk or eagle can. it’s important to remember that birds with large wingspans do not magically lose their length when hidden. they are just conveniently folded in against their bodies.

knowing this we can try again. suddenly things seem to click in place more and have a believable-ness to them.

the rule of thumb for most birds is they have less body mass and more leg/neck than one thinks. they are lanky dinosaurs.

when we are looking at this:

we are seeing this:

with that rule, drawing birds becomes a lot less confusing. with practice you might just eyeball their feathered appearances but if not, going back to skeletal/muscle structure gives the base you need to draw convincing birds.

when it comes to specific body parts, the most challenging part for me personally have always been feet. birds with super twiggy feet are easier because one line per toe is easy to get away with. but when you get to birds with meatier feet, especially raptors, it gets difficult. my way of getting around this is to think of the actual ‘feet’ last. drawing each separate toe first gets confusing because you just find yourself trying to get them to each fit evenly together at the base of the foot. one always seems kind of skinnier or fatter than the others in my experiences, and by the time you correct it the gesture gets muddled and lost.

so i just skip that part until later, i draw talon first.

perhaps this is very unorthodox, but just like artists might square in the hands first on a human before working out the arms, i square in the talons to know where i want them before worrying how they go on exactly.

that way we have a clear gesture captured, and in my experience it is much more readable.

thats’ really all i can think of now in terms of my techniques, i hope this helps :V

Notes: Thank you for the prompt, @bogwisdom! I’m sorry this took me around 6 months to write and post. Hopefully, you won’t be disappointed.

This is VERY MUCH out of my comfort zone because it’s NSFW, which is a first, and I would not have been able to write it or post it without @a-january-girl. She is a lifesaver really and the biggest thank you for helping me. Also a very big thank you to word wizard, @crossedbeams who saved the beginning of my story that I just couldn’t get right.

Final notes: What they did with the bureau credit card? The answer is nothing. They were too busy with… other things. Enjoy!

It would be wrong to say she hadn’t planned for something to happen. If that were true, she wouldn’t have picked out matching black, lacy underwear and she wouldn’t have worn that stupid dress. Still, this wasn’t quite what she had imagined, him in her hotel room, after they’d watched that god-awful movie that’s still playing on loop behind her eyelids, hours after it ended. They had looked on in disbelief at the embarrassing charade as it played out in front of them for everyone to see. Their lives, everything they had ever fought for, turned into a brainless comedy — hopefully one as quickly forgotten as it was written.

It isn’t that she can’t take being laughed at — that comes with the job, or the company that she’s in, really. No, what she hates is the fact that when the laughter fades, they still never talk about real things. Important things. They still haven’t talked about how she walked quietly to his bedroom a few nights ago to find him awake, wanting the very same thing as her. Seven years of courtship had ended quickly and silently, partners dancing a well-known waltz, brand new and yet right in every single imaginable way. But she hadn’t told him how it had made her feel. She hadn’t mentioned anything about it in the office the morning after. Nor had he. It was like it had never happened. It was just another thing added to her little library of small failures.

He had surprised her earlier though when he had reached for her hand to leave the movie set, guiding her outside, to where a nice car stood parked, ready to take them both away. He had wanted to drive them somewhere nice to watch the sun go down, he said, but when she asked him if that was really what he wanted he had been quiet for some time before asking if she felt like going back to the hotel. Relieved about how simple it could be, she had nodded as a breathless yes had slipped out of her lips, and he had turned the car around.

Driving back to the hotel, she knew that the movie didn’t have to ruin anything between them and didn’t have to make things awkward. So she decided to stick to the truth they both knew in their hearts — she carries him with her wherever she goes, and him her. She didn’t tell him though. This would be another thing left unsaid.

Knowing it was enough; there was no need to complicate this part of their lives too.

And that’s why she now finds herself lying in her bed, his eyes following her every move. It’s thrilling, she silently admits to herself, and she hopes he’ll take the next step as she spreads out her arms on the big bed.

listen, i’m gonna be honest here, on a flawed and strictly personal level: if the events of the mcu were happening in our world, i would be fucking Terrified of the avengers

as a civilian in the mcu i wouldn’t have access to a ton of info about Bucky Barnes’ Super Tragic Life Situation? i would just know about the apocalyptic shit that happened in sokovia and i’d be seeing news stories about the avengers just Showing Up in countries they had no right to be in, causing damage, and leaving patting themselves on the back. i get upset hearing about local police misconduct. i wouldn’t be chill in this situation

this straight white 25-30 year old american dude from the 40s marching around the globe with a group of superpowered vigilantes (some ex-military, some enhanced with dangerous superpowers, all heavily armed with nearly unlimited resources) fighting people, possibly without working with local law enforcement or emergency services, without being held responsible by any higher-ups because the secret government organization he was working for turned out to be hydra so he burned that to the ground (making more apocalyptic-looking shit happen in the states) and then decided that he should still get to do that job anywhere he chooses without any systems of accountability or communication with the public in place (short of an eccentric billionaire with a shaky reputation making some statements to the press)

like. would i be on tumblr and twitter and facebook seeing people asking for a donation to their kickstarter to fix their car or their house or pay hospital bills or something because of the events of the avengers, and catws, and aou, and cacw,,,, like would the avengers be paying for that? they’re not working for anyone. they don’t have people they answer to. there’s probably not a complaints department or a number you can call. do i have to personally contact and/or sue tony stark to unfuck my financial situation. how exactly do you handle this? how does this work? who’s paying for damages this would be a mess

and then 117 countries around the world start getting together to say “okay this needs to stop”, so there’s probably some Not Great Press re: the avengers circulating around the world. natasha was a russian spy/assassin and all of her Red Ledger Baggage got dumped onto the internet. + also press re: the Event In Lagos™…and then bucky barnes attacks the people trying to hold the avengers accountable. holy shit. the leader of a nation who was leading the charge re: Avengers & Accountability is murdered by captain america’s best friend.

i mean, steve knows that bucky is innocent, you and me know that bucky is innocent, but your average citizen probably wouldn’t. then steve goes and physically fights off the people who have been sent to arrest bucky for this–you think those people and the families of those people wouldn’t be publicly not okay with that? there’s a dramatic car chase fight situation involving bucky, steve, sam, And The Son Of The Recently Murdered King of Wakanda, and they’re arrested, and maybe you think the drama is probably over, it’s being dealt with, bUT NO, bucky barnes attacks a bunch of people and escapes and there’s a dramatic helicopter crash and holy shit this is like maybe half of the movie’s plot and things would already be So Tense

like even people who were pro-avengers would probably be like  “holy shit okay but What Is Going On” and this is all Before the fight at the airport in germany and hearing on the news that captain america broke his team of vigilantes out of prison and they are now Hiding Somewhere Among Us…like, we know these people and can empathize with them because we see their stories in a way that prioritizes them and their relationships over the collateral damage but like. this would be such a mess this would be so tense to live through as a civilian and i would be Afraid

Sana and her two worlds

So for a while I have noticed that this season has included a lot of shots with Sana and doors. She’s been behind them, walking through them, peeking behind everything beyond the door, and even standing in the doorway as she is greeted by others.

I tried to not think too much about it because it’s just showing Sana enter a room right? It doesn’t mean anything.

But then I started to think about what Sana’s theme is this season. She is torn between two worlds. Her faith, religion, family as one world and then her friends, Norwegian culture, and now Yousef, representing another.

She wants both but she is struggling to find the balance between these two worlds.

The door is a symbolic representation of a passageway from one world to another, particularly in regards to religion.

So when it comes to Sana, every time we see her with a door, it is representing Sana transitioning into another world.

When she sees the girls in ep 1, she stands in the door, observing the world they represent before joining them

When we first see her home, we get a shot of Sana actually entering it. Introducing us to her other world. The one we haven’t seen before this season.

We get to see her enter a party, representing her walking into that world again.

And then, we see her enter a room in the party to pray, symbolising her switching into her other world again.

She is literally taking the passageway into each world. Trying to separate them but have them both at the same time.

and you can tell it is going to begin to become exhausting, trying to juggle being a part of both.

Without knowing it at the time, when Sana looks behind the door at Yousef in episode two, this was representing her observing another world she wants to be a part of, but without actually walking through the door and leaving her world behind - which is now the issue she is going to struggle with when it comes to Yousef and her faith.

To be with him, how much of her world does she need to sacrifice?

If she steps through the threshold, how much of her world begins to crumble?

she is truly torn, so she continues to stay in the doorway.

and now in this clip we saw Sana hiding behind the door as she peeks at her mother and her brother arguing, representing Sana feeling lost between her two worlds.

She is watching as this one begins to shake at just the mere droplet of the other world mixing in. And this is when the trouble truly begins.

Soon Sana will have to stop hiding behind her door…and either choose between the two worlds, or find a way to bring them together.

Danny’s life touched many people and we’ll be looking at all those connections. If you or someone you know has any information, has noticed anything unusual, please come forward now. I’d urge everyone, don’t hide anything… because we will find out. If a member of your family or a friend or a neighbour has been behaving differently in the past days or weeks, please tell the police immediately. There will be no hiding place for Danny’s killer. We will catch whoever did this. — Broadchurch, Season 1

Centuries in the Making: Part 3

Prompt: Description: An average human, an Original Vampire, and a bond so strong no magic can break it. New Orleans is in for a hell of a ride.

Part 1, Part 2

“Human?”

   “Yes, human.”

“And you’re quite sure she’s not a witch?”

   “Positive.”

There’s a chuckle, “Well mother nature certainly can be a bitch, can’t she? How do you plan on protecting the poor thing? Are you going to change her?”

“That is neither here nor there at the moment. All we need right now is a cloaking spell to hide the magic.”

“There is no hiding the magic.”

“Why not?” The question pops out of your mouth before you can stop it. Then again, maybe some part of you didn’t want to stop it. You’d been gone all of thirty minutes, only to shower and change, and had come back to another discussion about your life. You deserved to be a part of it.

When you step from your hiding place, you’re greeted with a scowl from Klaus, “Could you please tell me where a grown woman got such a penchant for snooping?”

You stare at him, “A desire to know what exactly will be happening to my life.”

There’s a chuckle, “You got a sassy one, Elijah.”

Your soulmate’s lips twitch, “Apparently. Y/N this is my younger brother, Kol. He’s a witch.”

You give the new addition a small smile, and he grins at you, “What do you know about the soulmark’s origin?”

You slide your hands into the pockets of your pants, “Not much. The general mythology.”

He nods, “Forget it all. It’s crap. The marks were invented by witches. Witches older than even our mother.”

You straighten a bit, “Older than the first witch?”

He stares at you for a moment, “You know our story?”

“Bits and pieces. I was Rebekah’s roommate for eight months. Apparently, she needed to vent.”

Kol smirks, “After a thousand years with Nik, I can’t really blame her. What about you, love? What’s your story?”

   “A story for another time.”

He grins at you, “All right, answer me this, where is sister dearest?”

You slide your hands out of your pockets to cross them against your chest. You couldn’t tell him even if you wanted to. The compulsion was still in effect.

“Alright, fine, don’t tell me. Not as though I’m surprised.” You can hear the anger and frustration in his voice.

And from the looks of things Klaus didn’t care, “Yes, yes. The poor neglected brother. On with the story.”

Kol’s scowl spoke legions, “And why should I? You don’t trust me with your secrets, why should you trust my information?”

There was a moment of silence before Elijah spoke, his voice seemingly calm, “Because, little brother, information is power. Power that I can use to protect the other half of my soul, and if you deny me that power, I will snap your neck.”

You find yourself walking towards him, as though something is pulling you forward. You take his hand in yours, and lean ever so slightly against him. For just a second, you see a hint of surprise, before he laces his fingers with yours, and leans ever so slightly into you. He positions himself so that he’s standing slightly in front of you.

Your eyes flicker back to Kol, “Well, shit.” he runs a hand through his hair before taking a seat at the table. “The soulmark bond is old. Older than us, and nearly as old as time. It’s old magic, good magic, created from a willing sacrifice. Supposedly, every person is born with another half. This other half is supposed to your equal or your perfect match. It allows for a bond to be put in place. That bond, in the case of witches, amplified their power.

They could then use that power to protect their covens and their families. The more pairs they had, the better off they would be. Of course, these pairs were limited. There was no true way to tell who your soulmate was until you were joined.

So they had an idea. What if you could tell who your soulmate was with the first words you ever spoke to them? A pair of soulmates in a coven decided to create runes that showed compatibility, that would appear on a person’s sixteenth birthday. The first words their soulmate would ever say to them. The magic would surround them, alert them to the fact. Once the connection was made, there would be a pull, and after they joined, there would be a bond.

So, a pair of soulmates, a pair who had completed the bond and strengthened it over years, decided to make a willing sacrifice. They performed a ritual, and surrendered their lives. And thus, the spell was born.

At first, the marks were just runes, but as time evolved, and writing systems evolved as well, the magic evolved with it. Eventually, the runes began to become the first words that were spoken. And eventually, they began to be written in the soulmate’s hand. Originally, the spell was only meant for witches, but instead it was cast over all humanity. After all, not all of the matches were going to be two witches.

That desire to be with each other, to be near each other, it’s all a part of the spell. You want to be close to each other, the magic is calling for you to complete the bond.”

You’re surprised at how steady your voice is when you ask, “What does it mean to complete the bond?”

Kol’s grin is devilish, “Sex, love. Joining of two bodies and souls and all that jazz. It forms the bond.”

“And what is the bond itself?” Elijah’s voice is steady, as his thumb rubs back and forth against the top of your hand.

Kol shrugs, “It’s different for each pair. It’s what the pair needs.”

“And there’s no way to hide it? To protect her?”

Kol shakes his head, “It’s powerful magic Elijah. Light magic. A part of nature. To lose one’s soulmate is to lose a part of themself. It’s something to be celebrated Elijah. It’s so strong that even vampires aren’t cut off from it. That being said, like everything else, I imagine it’s amplified for you. That would explain the intense protective streak.”

“Well that’s just lovely,” Klaus’s voice is filled with sarcasm, “A great giant magic beacon, pointing straight at our home.”

You’re surprised when Kol snaps back, “The bond is sacred, Nik. A part of nature itself. No self-respecting witch would mess with the bond.”

Klaus’ smile is menacing, “Because we’re surrounded by self-respecting witches.”

You watch as Kol slowly stands up, never breaking eye contact with Klaus. Elijah simply squeezes your hand once before saying, “That is enough, children.”

Kol simply sighs, “Well, I’ve done all I can. I’ll just see myself out.” You watch him walk towards the door, and right before he’s about to leave, he pauses. He turns to you and Elijah and says, “The bond will need to be completed. The magic surrounding you two is too strong for either to walk away.” His attention turns to Elijah, “Looks like the thousand years were worth the wait.” And without another word, you watch him leave.
