Supreme Court Won’t Hear Major Case on Transgender Rights
The justices vacated an appeal’s court decision in favor of a transgender boy, Gavin Grimm, and sent the case back for further consideration.
By Adam Liptak

What this is: Disappointing, infuriating, and a direct result of President Trump’s decision to withdraw President Obama’s previously issued guidance on transgender youth.

What this isn’t: The end of the road. The past few months have seen a historic growth in support for transgender protections at the highest level. Thousands of individuals and organizations have signed on to the amicus briefs—major medical associations, unions representing millions of teachers, national religious leaders, elected officials at the local, state, and federal level, and ordinary citizens concerned about the rights and dignity of their fellow human beings.

This decision does not void any existing Title IX legal protections for transgender students, and similar cases regarding the fundamental rights of transgender students in schools are pending throughout the circuit courts.

The momentum on this issue is clear, and it isn’t going to be readily reversed—at least not if we all continue to work for what’s right. We remain committed to standing with Gavin, to supporting the ACLU, and ultimately toward the passage of explicit, comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for all LGBTQ Americans. It’s more important now than ever before.

Here’s how you can keep up the fight:

anonymous asked:

Now I'm a new follower so if you've answered an ask like this before I apologize, but why do you ship Kachako?

I ACTUALLY HAVE NOT ANSWERED AN ASK LIKE THIS BEFORE SO NO WORRIES

i actually haven’t posted why i enjoy Kacchako so much, tho i have spoken with a few friends about it. but OH MAN…. oh gosh where do i even start jkslg;ha;lghkal;ghskal

ok so. a big part of it comes from their relationship in canon. both characters have a large amount of respect for each other. they’ve only interacted a few times (including in the omake), but each time is fairly insightful to the characters, and particularly when said characters comment about each other to other characters.

but it’s also how their relationship has a lot of potential in the narrative to drive both character’s development further really interesting directions.

to start, their fight. their fight at the Sports Festival was the first time Bakugou ever actually noticed Uraraka. before she was just sorta that unnamed girl who hung around Izuku.

Uraraka had noticed Bakugou before, but mostly she just wanted to stay out of his way (like with her line after the class president vote when Bakugou asks who voted for Deku, “I hope he doesn’t find out it was me…”)

but oh man. their fight. their fight is AMAZING on so many levels. it’s not just about Uraraka and Bakugou battling each other, there are many, many layers to it.

for example, the reason why Uraraka is fighting so hard in the first place. she wants to support her parents. her family grew up poor, and the whole reason she’s at UA, trying to become a hero, is because she wants to help support her parents financially. this fight is her proving just how far she’s willing to go in order to fulfill that goal.

she’s willing to go toe-to-toe against Bakugou, who never goes easy on anyone, in order to prove what she’s made of. hell, she even thanks Bakugou for not going easy on her.

and it’s not just that. right before this fight, she realized that she was riding on Izuku’s success without improving herself all that much. she thought she was being friendly, but she realized that she really was just hoping that Izuku would get her through the day again.

she feels shame for it. when Iida said that he wants to prove himself against Izuku, she feels shameful of her own actions.

so she decided to change. she decided to put her all into fighting Bakugou, proving that she can make it to the finals just like Deku. that she can do it by herself. she wanted to prove it to everyone. she wanted to prove it to herself that she could do it.

this fight gave Uraraka so much character development. before this fight, she was still sorta… there. we didn’t have much character motivation, and she was mostly just the happy, bubbly Love Interest/main female character. we heard that she was poor, but this fight put that motivation to the forefront of her character and proved just how much potential she has to grow and develop.

and on Bakugou’s end, it’s really interesting. right from the get-go he warns her that if she’s gonna forfeit she needs to do it now, because he won’t go easy on her. and through out the fight he proves just that–however, despite the pummeling Bakugou gave her over and over again, she continued to come back for more.

she refused to give up. nothing he did could put her down for long. she always got back up on her feet and kept running in for an attack.

Aizawa says it here clearly: by refusing to go easy on her, he’s acknowledging her strength. he’s showing her respect as an opponent. she’s not just a fragile little girl being beaten up by the Big Bad Blasty-guy, they’re equals on the battleground, and Bakugou refuses to let his guard down around her because they’ve both made it this far.

Bakugou lost against Izuku in the first Heroes vs. Villains training arc, and it was largely because he underestimated Izuku, and overestimated himself. Bakugou learned his lesson, and is refusing to do the same thing here.

Uraraka went through the same things he did at UA. she was there during his fight it Izuku, she was there when the villains invaded, she made it through the Sports Festival and met him as an opponent. clearly, she’s not someone to treat lightly.

what’s particularly interesting tho, is that at the end of the fight, Bakugou looks EXTREMELY EXCITED to keep fighting her.

Uraraka landed her final attack, which failed (because Bakugou used his largest blast to blow it away–you can see his hands shaking afterwards). Bakugou is ready to keep going, and rushes at her, with this huge, excited grin on his face, and says her name for the first time.

she surprised him. she impressed him. she shocked him.

Bakugou doesn’t remember people’s names. he can’t be bothered. he calls everyone by degrading nicknames, like Drooly, or Soy-Sauce Face, Raccoon Eyes, Deku, etc. The only characters he calls by name are All Might, Kirishima, and Uraraka.

All Might, because he’s the person Bakugou looks up to the most.

Kirishima is interesting. Bakugou has known Kirishima fairly well since at least the USJ incident. he kept calling him Hair-for-Brains until the cavalry battle at the Sports Festival, which is the first time he calls Kirishima by his name.

Bakugou first met Uraraka at the Sports Festival, and fought her for half an hour, at best. at the beginning, he calls her Round-Face. however, in that time, she impressed him so much that he started calling her by her name mid-fight.

when Bakugou starts calling people by their names, he doesn’t go back from that. he keeps calling them by their names. it’s his personal form of respect, that’s very subtle and understated.

what’s also really interesting about their fight is Bakugou’s reaction after Uraraka falls.

he looks shocked, in a way that we haven’t ever seen before. she impressed him so much, but then she falls and he realizes that she has a limit. someone he admires and wants to fight, actually has a limit.

it’s similar to his shock when All Might’s true form is revealed for the first time.

and after it’s over, Bakugou actually confronts Izuku about Uraraka. he berates Izuku for giving Uraraka that dangerous, self-destructive plan. in other words: in a very backhanded way, he’s saying he cares for Uraraka’s safety and well being.

he’s reprimanding Izuku for giving her a dangerous plan. Bakugou knows Izuku has a notebook full of notes on heroes and the other kids. Izuku mentioned it to Bakugou in their first fight. it would be a no-brainer to figure out that Izuku must’ve come up with a plan for Uraraka. and Bakugou is right, Izuku was willing to let Uraraka use his notes.

except that Uraraka refused to use them.

Izuku tells Bakugou point-blank that all that Uraraka did on the battlefield was her own plan. he had nothing to do with it. It was all Uraraka.

when Kaminari starts nagging on Bakugou for hurting a “harmless little girl” like Uraraka, Bakugou mutters to himself that there isn’t anything fragile about her.

this is the first time Bakugou has ever actually praised or defended anyone. he’s always been very much about himself. in the beginning of the manga, he would go on and on and on about how great he was, and how everyone else (in his own class) were all losers, and this attitude is still fairly prevalent.

he couldn’t even be bothered to remember his own classmate’s quirks. he’s gotten better about being egotistic since his fight with Izuku (and from watching everyone else in the class–he even admits that he didn’t think he could beat Todoroki at one point), but only just.

but he remembered her name. he defended her against Kaminari’s words. he respected her as an equal and as an opponent. later on, during his fight with Todoroki, he even berates Todoroki for holding back against him, and the manga hovers over Uraraka for a second.

Bakugou says only those who try their damnedest to win are allowed to stand before him. he’s referring back to Uraraka. again, in a roundabout sort of way, he’s showing her a lot of respect and praise.

coming from someone like Bakugou, who’s had so many issues with self confidence, ego, and refusing to even acknowledge those around him, that is a lot.

this fight was amazing for both characters, because it gave them BOTH amazing character development. this fight showed just how far Uraraka was willing to go, just how strong her determination is, in fulfilling her goal. this fight was also the first time we’ve see Bakugou develop away from the ‘angry-rival.’ this is the first time we saw him compliment and respect someone else.

this fight is the catalyst for so many amazing things, and the development doesn’t stop there.

after the Sports Festival, when the kids are trying to figure out where they want to intern, Uraraka decides to go with Gunhead. largely because of her fight with Bakugou.

she realized that, while she wants to be a disaster relief hero, knowing how to fight in close combat is an invaluable skill that she should learn, and it’ll be a huge advantage to her. it was thanks to her fight with Bakugou that helped her come to this conclusion, and allowed her to improve herself more.

and to move on a bit, lets look at the Omake chapter [which you can find a translation for here]

oh man. this omake. THIS OMAKE.

Uraraka isn’t afraid of Bakugou anymore. not since their fight, in fact. she’s confident enough around him to willing to confront him face-to-face, about his issues with Izuku.

she sees through his act. she says that Bakugou was so cool during their fight, but when it comes to Izuku, Bakugou tries to push him away, as if he’s scared. and he is. he’s scared of Izuku’s progress. it terrifies him. but he’s in denial about it.

Uraraka confronts him about this, sees right fucking through Bakugou’s denial, fear, and pride, and tells him straight up that she thinks he should try to be friends with Izuku again. no other character has done this before. only Uraraka has been able to see through Bakugou so clearly.

Bakugou, presented with this tho, of course yells, goes into fighting stance, and challenges her to a fight (which she responds to immediately with her own battle cry and fighting stance, lmao). and then after Midnight makes them sit down again, Bakugou is back in denial.

however, he keeps calling her by her name. he’s calling her ‘Useless Uraraka’ in his head, but he’s still calling her by her name, which just continues to show his own respect for her, even as he’s pissed and angry.

this omake is fantastic because it gives us a hint into the characters and their relationships. Uraraka has clearly notices the issues between Izuku and Bakugou, and tried to mend them in her own way. Izuku is her friend, and Bakugou respected her as an equal in their fight, and she wants them to be friends again. and she even notices that Bakugou fears Izuku on some level, which is a fantastic bit of introspection from her end.

and later on, she continues to show that she understands Bakugou well. in fact, she’s one of the few people who understands him the best.

she says right here that Bakugou would probably view being rescued as a disgrace. and considering the last time he got rescued, she’s right. the only reason the rescue mission worked out in the end is because Kirishima was there.

with Kacchako, there’s just so much room for development. even now, each characters have been pushed further into growing thanks to each other’s actions, and they’ve both shown a remarkable amount of respect and understanding towards each other.

there’s just so much self growth and positivity that could be had with this ship, and i would love to see more of these two interact in canon. if i had to choose a ship that i’d love to see in canon, it would definitely be this, because i think there’s a lot of opportunities for development and growth and for new and interesting places for the narrative to go.

particularly concerning Izuku. Uraraka saw through Bakugou and realized that he fears Izuku. i would love to see her try to become the common ground between them. she, along with Kirishima, could be the bridges that allow those two to mend their relationship in the long run.

again, there’s just so much potential for this ship, both for the characters, their growth, and the narrative.

AHH ANYWAY THIS GOT REALLY LONG BUT i hope that all makes sense!!!

The music continues to blare over your headphones as you enter your apartment.  You walk through your tiny kitchen to the equally small bathroom in the back.  As you flip on the light you finally pull out the buds.  Maybe you ran ten miles? Maybe twenty?  You stopped keeping track.  You notice how red your face is from the workout and turn on the water, splashing some on your face.

It’s getting easier to look yourself in the mirror. You might not look like a new person, but you feel like one.  You still hold out hope that the past can stay in the past. You actually let yourself smile a little as you blot the water and sweat from your face.

in 2017, how can you teach a child or tell anyone who isn’t from the U.S. that America stands for freedom and equality when….

1. the Native Americans who originally owned this land (who now dwindle numbers due to mass murdering and pillaging) are still fighting TODAY to protect what’s left of it. Whilst also trying to prevent an oil pipeline system that would run from the north to the south in the center of the nation. This pipeline has the capacity to destroy ecosystems along that path which will never be able to be repaired. Forever contaminating the earth.

2. Black americans (a majority who’s ancestors were Africans forced into slavery & brought here through atlantic slave trade) continue to be terrorised and murdered. Oppressed, jailed, & disenfranchised so they never succeed at prevailing economically or knowing their self worth.

3. Anyone who does not identify as a white, Christian, heterosexual male, faces discrimination and opression.

issa lie. A flook. Freedom and equality is the idealistic goal we want to reach but it isn’t what this county stands for, otherwise we wouldn’t be fighting problems that are centuries old.

I Heart My Dads

by Zach Kobayashi, Marketing Assistant, DoSomething.org

When you have two dads, June can become somewhat of a hectic month, but it’s also a distinctly special time.  The various Pride events throughout the month represent a feeling and a movement that resonates more strongly, and Father’s Day brings its own set of emotions.  June is a particularly important time of the year for Marly Leighton, Business Development Manager at DoSomething.org, and her family.  Marly and her dads have been working together to fight for their equality and for the entire LGBTQ community since she came out in her freshman year of college, and she had supported her dads in their fight long before then.  Now, Marly continues to fight for the LGBTQ community alongside her dads and through her work at DoSomething.org, helping to support campaigns like Celebrate Pride and Free to Pee.

Born to young, religious parents from Oklahoma, a five-year-old Marly found it difficult to understand when her dad came out as gay and her parents divorced.  It wasn’t until she was seven that Marly started to understand what it meant for her dad to be gay.  He had sat her down in a Wendy’s one night to explain it to her.  Her religious upbringing had led her to believe that her dad must be going to hell because of his sexuality, but her dad helped her understand his sexuality in its full truth and encouraged her to consider different perspectives as she grew up, even beyond sexuality.

Marly’s dad met his current partner, who she now calls her “bonus dad,” during her freshman year of high school.  Shortly after her dad started seeing his partner, Dan, Marly turned sixteen.  For her birthday dinner, Dan chose a vegetarian restaurant in Dallas because Marly was a vegetarian at the time.  It was this moment that helped her realize that Dan was thoughtful in ways he wasn’t required to be, and his thoughtfulness throughout her life has kept them close.  Both Marly’s dad and Dan have been there for her through difficult breakups, her own coming out during her freshman year of college, and so many years of her life.

Marly continues to support her dads in return by encouraging them to stay healthy so they can be there for her for many more years and can continue their fight for the LGBTQ community.  After a family friend went for a routine check up a few months ago and was rushed to the hospital for emergency heart surgery, Marly called her dads and told them to visit their doctors for check ups.  She now regularly encourages her dads to have regular check ups with their doctors and be mindful of their heart health.

The next time Marly visits her dads will be at a Father’s Day cookout, and she plans to give them cards that encourage them to check their blood pressure and consider their heart health.  Through DoSomething.org’s I Heart Dad campaign, everyone can help remind their dad to check his blood pressure and think about his health.  Marly encourages her dads to be healthy to show her love for them, and everyone can show love for their dad with DoSomething.org.

You are loved.

I Just wanted to let you guys know despite the aftermath of the election, I believe that everything is going to be okay. We cannot let negativity control our thoughts and actions. I know it’s hard right now and I am equally as upset as the rest of you.

However, If we continue to fight for our rights and remain strong, we will prevail!
In the meantime, I will continue to work hard, offering you more educational and fun comics!

We all need some cuteness during these dark and depressing times after all.
I hope I managed to make someone smile today, and just remember, you are loved and appreciated.

Have a great night.

Oceans Between Us

Mckirk - Leonard x Jim

No major warnings

Leonard sat in his quarters, staring down at the bourbon in his glass as he swirled it slowly. He tossed back the small bit that was left before quickly refilling his tumbler again. It had been a long day in Medbay, complicated by Jim being in there for half it with yet another head injury.

I want you, yeah I want you

He didn’t know when it happened, he didn’t know how it happened. Somehow Jim Kirk had wormed his way into Leonard’s heart, and taken root, blossoming into something more. Leonard was becoming frustrated at how his body betrayed him around Jim. Yearning, longing for nothing more than to take Jim into his arms, but he couldn’t. Jim didn’t and wouldn’t feel the same way, he was more than sure.

Out Congressman David Cicilline: Why I Introduced the Equality Act
"The American people deserve to know who will stand up and speak out for those on the margins of society," writes the U.S. representative from Rhode Island.

“But the truth is that, as President Obama said last January, Donald Trump’s presidency is just a comma, not a period. It’s a brief pause in our ongoing struggle for social justice and equality.

And the truth is that it’s more important now than ever before that we continue fighting to advance full equality for all LGBT Americans. “

Cicilline’s bill would guarantee protections for all LGBTQ individuals, particularly against discrimination in the workplace. Currently, only 20 states and D.C. offer these protections – meaning in some states it’s possible for a same sex couple to get married on a Saturday, and then come into work on Monday only to be fired for it.

Although Cicilline expects to get no support from his Republican colleagues, he feels it is important for the community to know there are people fight for them – and who they are.

“Our nation is at a crossroads. We cannot let them succeed in taking America down the path of intolerance and bigotry.“

Last Promise.

Prompt: A Theo imagine where the reader is his gf and she dies in his arms like Allison did in Scott’s. She’s a banshee. – @rochyu

Author’s Note: This prompt originally had more to it, but after talking with @rochyu, she said it was fine if I changed it up a bit since she had already requested it with someone else and they got it written first.

Hope you like what I came up with!

Warning: Death.

Master List.

Last Promise.

(Y/N)’s heart started racing as a sudden massive wave of anxiety washed over her. She hated this. She hated being a banshee. She’d only been one for a few months, but she knew she hated it. She hated getting the feeling that someone was going to die. It didn’t help that Beacon Hills didn’t exactly have a high survival rate thanks to being a literal beacon for supernatural creatures and all. She didn’t understand how Lydia did it.

Lydia’s tried to help her manage it and push some feelings back, but (Y/N) doesn’t think this is something she’ll ever get used to. Don’t get her wrong, there are some instances where she gets the feeling that someone is going to die, and she’s actually able to help save someone. That was one of the most rewarding feelings, being able to save someone. But most of the time, the feeling is excruciating and heart-wrenching.

She stopped in her tracks in the courtyard of the school. Busy students rushed around her as they escaped the confined hallways and raced toward the long, holiday weekend. (Y/N) barely noticed them though as she zoned out. She could feel it. She could feel that someone close to her was going to die soon. It sent her into a panic. Her breathing got labored. Her palms got sweaty, and her vision started to get blurry. She could feel her legs starting to shake as she tried to maintain her balance. She was having a full-blown panic attack.

On this day, 8 years ago, I met my first girlfriend.

A week later, I got yelled at in school. Lol you fucking freak, you ain’t never even gonna marry that girl cos everyone hates you, you fucking faggot.

Today is March 1st, 2017. Today I can legally get married. I can choose, and my marriage will be valid. 8 years of fighting. The fight will always continue, but for now, I will enjoy this day.“

If you're still doing the prompts; "If you don't stop rubbing your leg on him so help me I'll-"

Yuri doesn’t get to finish his statement before Victor pointedly narrows his eyes then purposefully, and very exaggeratedly, runs his entire calf up the back of Katsuki’s leg. “You’ll what?”

Yuri blinks slowly instead of continuing his threat, before turning to look at Otabek with feigned composure. “We’re leaving.”

Otabek stops sipping his drink and just raises one eyebrow. “Really?”

“Yes really.” He motions to Victor who is now fighting the piggy over who gets to be the dominant hand between their equally tangled fingers. “Before this gets any more…MORE.”

“We’re cute!” Victor protests from across the bench. “And you’re jealous!”

Katsudon, bless him, says nothing, he just winces apologetically. Yuri gets the feeling the man isn’t much on Victor’s PDA, but is too reserved to stop him acting up in public.

“Jealous of what?”

Victor flips his silver hair out of his face and brandishes his and Katsuki’s joined hands. “Of our shameless affection.”

It takes everything in Yuri not to roll his eyes, as he grabs Beka’s hand and pulls him up to leave.

“There’s nothing I want to do to Otabek in public,” Yuri says smugly, “that wouldn’t be twice as fun in private.”

He hears Victor sputter as they walk away. Hopefully choking on his own pride.

Happy turned Hostile: Part 6 (Finale)

Warnings: Angst, crying, did y’all think this was gonna end happy? Who knows.. it just may HEHEHEHEHHEEHEEH. Sorry okay.

AN: Okay, final part. Thank you to everyone who’s liked and reblogged this. Thank you for sticking around to read the next chapter. I hope y’all stick around for the next story or whatever it is that I may post.

Part One   Part Two   Part Three  Part Four   Part Five

 Sam P.O.V:

It’s been two weeks since we have heard from (Y/N) and Crowley wasn’t returning our calls. Shocker.

We thought about summoning him and trapping him; knowing (Y/N) would probably show up to save him. Which would probably piss her off, and we’re trying to get back on her good side. So, we voted against that plan.

They were like best friends now. Which made me equally jealous and angry, but I’m happy she’s had somebody and she wasn’t alone.

I can’t imagine how hard it was for her to leave everyone and everything she loved. To give it up to save both me and Dean. Well, I could imagine but Dean and I always came back. (Y/N) didn’t come back.

Dean continues beating himself up over the fight with (Y/N) and what he said to her. He didn’t really mean it. He was hurt and mad, angry that she made a deal behind our backs. Like he’s one to talk. We just needed time. Time to adjust to (Y/N), black eyes and all. She didn’t want to be cured. And I wasn’t going to force her. Black eyes or not, that was still my (Y/N). I just wish I could tell her that.

Another week passed. And another made it a month. A month without hearing or knowing anything about (Y/N).

We’ve tortured so many demons I’ve lost count; trying to find out where she is and how she is. But none of them would talk.

“We need to summon Crowley. Now!” I growled slamming my hands down on the table where Dean and I were eating dinner; making the water splash out the sides of my cup.

“I know.” was all Dean said as he pushed back from the table and made his way to the dungeon.

“Hello, boys.”

“Where’s (Y/N)?” I asked before he could say anything else.

“I was just about to come see you both until you well you know.” he said walking forwards and stopped dead in his tracks at the end of the Devil’s Trap.

“Really, boys?”

“Where. Is. She?” this time it was Dean, nothing but anger in his voice.

“Break the trap.”

“Not until you-” Dean didn’t finish before I walked up to Crowley and scratched the paint away, breaking the Devil’s Trap.

“What the hell, Sammy?” Dean yelled.

“Thank you, moose.” was all Crowley said before he reached into his suit jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

I knew it was from (Y/N). But why not just show up herself? Did she hate us that much?

My stomach was in knots now.

“What is this?” I asked Crowley.

“It’s from (Y/N), just read it. I’ll wait over here.” He said as he motioned towards the wooden chair before walking to it.

I slowly unfolded the thick paper and tried to brace myself for her to say she’s never coming back because of the fight her and Dean had and how I didn’t defend her the way we both knew I should have.

I took a deep breath in and released it slowly starting to read the letter; my hands slightly shaking. I didn’t want to lose the love of my life. Again.

Dear Sam and Dean,

Firstly, I need you to know this isn’t a trick. If you’re reading this letter it means Crowley made good on his promise and delivered this later after I’m gone. If you’re reading this, that means I’m dead. For good this time.

I don’t know how it happened. Hopefully, I went out good, like the fighter you guys always told me I was.I don’t know if we’ve spoken since the fight we had when you found out I was alive and not dead. If not, then I’m sorry I didn’t come see my boys before. I need you both to know that I forgive you and you need to forgive yourself. Because if I could go back and do it again. I would. Anything to save my boys. The world needs you more than it needed me.

I had a good run. With you two and everyone along the way. And after I came to hell with Crowley. Speaking of, don’t kill him. You may not want to believe it but there is some good in him.

I have so much I want to say, but I’m gonna guess I’ve seen you boys recently and you already know. You know how much I love you so much and how you made my life the greatest it could have been.

I couldn’t read anymore. My vision was blurred. Dean was crying while reading over my shoulder, I don’t know when he got there.

My (Y/N).

All I could do was cry in that moment.

“How did it happen?” I managed to get out between breaths.

“Coven of witches. Mother and I are tracking them now.” Crowley said getting up from the chair he’s been seated in.

I swore I was him wipes tears from his eyes.

“I’m sorry, boys. Truly. I’ll call when we found the witches, I’m sure you two would want to help handle it.” he added.

“Hey, Crowley? Thanks.. for everything you did for her.”

“My pleassure.” he said before leaving the bunker in the blink of an eye.

END OF SAM P.O.V

Crowley returned to hell; wipping the remaing evidence of tears.

Making his way down the hallway and pushing the metal door open with a creek, he walked into the room.

"I’m back, love.”

“How’d they take it?” Stupid question but it was all you could think.

“As expected. But they believed it.”

“Good, it’s what needed to be done. No matter how much they love me; they’d never love this me. I had to do this.” you said tears fighting to escape.

Elif Shafak

Of all the festivals Latitude is my favourite. Usual fragmented memories of boozy walks through lights and mud are here replaced by striking words heard by accident in the poetry tent by previously unknown speakers.  I sat down in the midday muggy heat surrounded by a sparse crowd of intent bodies gazing upwards at a panel of women who all contributed to “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” , a book I read to a 6 year old girl recently at her request and subsequently bought for myself.  Each page praises female astronauts, physicists, transgender children, activists, intellectuals ect in the most matter of fact way that is quite startling and emotional to read to a 6 year old who is already nodding at the plight of Rosa Parks or Michelle Obama. I wished so badly I had had this book as a young girl, one that never dwells on the reliance of men or beauty, as many fairy tales and stories for young girls seem to.

Elif Shafak was one of the women on the stage, her staggering beauty in the spot light stunned me, she had a clear voice ringing with fearlessness and passion despite her pessimism about the course of women’s progress towards equality in the world. Raised in Turkey Shafak saw how her mothers’ worth lessened after her father left the family.  Instead of remarrying her mother became a diplomat. Shafak saw education and the use of her voice as a way of gaining freedom from her gender in the middle east but she also urges those in a democracy to continue to fight for their rights with urgency in light of how brittle freedom can be. When alluding to leaders now dominating the ‘progressive’ western world Shafak comments; “This is an amazing moment for global feminism. We now understand that things we take for granted can be taken away from us.’

Elif Shafak also makes many interesting points about the necessity of a muddle of ideas, cultures, beliefs and opinions and argues that fiction is the most unifying way of accepting and understanding ‘the other’. What she highlighted to me was my own fear in voicing my opinion, indeed partly due to feeling that my position is not threatened and little can be gained. But as Shafak points out history is not linear as leaders and books aim to teach us, and it appears that right now in western countries women’s freedoms and rights are regressing quietly often under the cover of patriotism or fear of being insulted for being outspoken or ‘unfeminine’. Silence is killing the work that has been done. Nothing was ever won without a fight, the vote, the right to birth control; all these things must be defended if women want to hold onto their freedom.

Below is a Ted talk from a while back. Shafak is such a captivating and inspiring speaker who really opened my mind. <3

Hello. I've found that you refer to yourself as a feminist. I'd like to inform you that if what you're fighting for is equal rights between genders then maybe you should take your transphobia and reconsider it. Just think over what it means if a man can't equally believe that her gender is as a man and a man can't equally believe his gender is as a woman. Gender fluidity would highly aid in the equality of the sexes.

Gender fluidity is harmful because it implies you can change your biological sex. If women could identify out of our oppression don’t you think we would have done that by now?? I fight for female liberation and will continue to.

You know, Netflix just did this amazing video for pride month sharing lgbtqa+ characters and it's really cool. But they use Sense8 to address the community in general and it pisses me off the way that they cancelled and now use it to promote equality. Like... NOW you're doing it? To favour THEIR image? SHAME! Real SHAME!!!

their image may be favored a tad but as we continue to fight because of the cancellation, we’re also making articles and people are writing about us and netflix is losing stocks so who really wins here?

Dashor is a country known globally for its culture, music and especially its crime. For almost a century the five families of its capital city, Trille, ran country more effectively government could, although not peacefully. Up until twenty five years ago, there was an intense rivalry between the mafia families. Then when Anthony, don of the Delgaard mafia took charge, he managed to persuade the other dons that their approach was doing more harm than good, and they should each be in charge of their own businesses, instead of fighting over which family could run the same businesses better than other.

So now each of the families run one major dealing, no more trying to be on top. They’re equal and all do business with each other. The five mafia families each in charge of one of the following: weapons, drugs, prostitution, gambling, loan sharking.

It was going well and they lived in relative harmony until Anthony was killed. Whilst his underboss’ son, the dons protege took over as don with the aim over continuing his mentor’s legacy, the unloved son, Ricardo, wanted power, wanted revenge. For now he is lying low, scared to move against a united front, but he is plotting, scouring dark alleys and smoke-filled bars for accomplices to destroy the peace and gain more power.

Still, even without Ricardo’s plotting, the peace might not last.  The envy and suspicions never disappeared between the families and it became clear that one little spark would be enough, to make everything Anthony had worked for go up in flames.
