and now its going so fast

I can’t articulate how it feels to be an active participant in creating life and fostering its growth. Henry is beginning this slow transition from baby to little person and it’s so bizarre to watch this process. It’s easy for me to remember the days we measured him in centimeters and inches and then the moment he entered the world, but now things are moving so fast and I’m desperately trying to catalogue every moment in my mind. I’m trying my best to enjoy every moment of the present because time is going by too fast.

Reblog this for other people!

Alright, we all fast. Some do it for 12 hours, some for 72 hours.

What happens when I fast?
First 3-6 hours:

-your body is using up all the sugar and carbs (glucose) in your body. You feel normal. It’s all good.
6-36 hours

-your body is now using fat cells (and will continue to do so after this point as well) but it’s not what your brain wants, so you might be craving foods like pasta and bread and very sweet things because your brain literally thrives on carbs and such

After 36 hours:

-your body is now using PROTEIN to get its energy, you might be experiencing muscle cramps because your body is breaking down muscles and fat to get the energy it needs.

Tips:

-drink water!! Not only does it keep you healthy but your body is losing a ton of water because carbohydrates cling to water, so when they’re being used, so is the water.

-drink 0 cal vitamin water. You need vitamins especially if you’re doing a particularly long fast. It keeps your brain healthy along with everything else.

-if you feel like you’re going to pass out, but do not want to eat, you may have low blood sugar. A spoon full of honey should help (or a small bottle of juice)

-after 36 hours of 0 cal fasting, if you still don’t want to break the fast, try doing a liquid one (so things like fruit juice, watered down tomato soup, almond milk etc)

-IF YOU ARE DRIVING DURING A FAST, DONT! Your reaction time, and overall reflexes/thought processes are hindered MAJORLY after about 15 hours.

-gum. sugar free gum is a life saver when cravings pop up (normally about 17 hours in for me)

-coffee/caffeine pills/diet pills are all great 0 cal appetite suppressants !

-0 cal sweeteners like Splenda can make water or green tea taste great.

After Fasting:

Your stomach should have shrank if you fasted more than 15 hours, so when breaking a fast:

-try something high carb, low cal, such as plain oatmeal (100) and half a banana with cinnamon (60)

-eat it slowly so that you have time to register that you’re full, a too full stomach after a fast hurts!

-then wait at least 3 hours before your next meal, which should include some protein

-make sure you don’t binge!!

Secrets Out

{Part 1} {Part 2} {Part 3} {Part 4} {Part 5}

You couldn’t do eat, you couldn’t bring yourself to stand up, and walk yourself over to the kitchen you’ll just remember the memories you made with them, it hurt you so much. You question everything they’ve ever said to you, ever done for you. was it all part of their game? Their bet? You didn’t want to answer, you knew it’ll just hurt you more. (y/f/n) would come check in on you almost daily now, it’s been a week since they told you, a week since you were happy, a week since you didn’t cry your eyes out. (y/f/n) was worried about you, she was mad at them for doing that to you, every time she came to check on you, you got skinnier, paler, she knew how much they meant to you, she knew about how happy the boys made you, she also knew that this broke you. she finally had enough when she went over to your apartment once more to see you almost like a zombie, numb to everything, it hurt her seeing you like that.

She finally had enough. (y/f/n) knew you weren’t ready to face the boys but she was, and she was fuming. she remembered how to get to their house from the countless times she had dropped you off or have done something with them to surprise you. when she made it up to their dorm, she practically banged on the door. Right away Taehyung opened it thinking it was you, his face lit up and then sunk again seeing it was only (y/f/n) “what the hell happened” (y/f/n) said sternly, she was mad but she could see that both sides were hurting just as much as each other, she didn’t want to make anything worse.

“I…”  Taehyung mumbled before looking down at his feet “I don’t know” he walked away from the door signaling (y/f/n) to come in. she called all the members to the living room and sat down waiting for their arrival. When they eventually made their way, she looked at all of them. They all look heartbroken, they all look they’ve been crying for days… “I’m here to talk about y/n” she interrupted the awkward silence. “I-is she ok?” Jimin said softly not showing his face. “no and by the looks of it neither are any of you….” “please tell y/n we are sorry and we want to talk and… that we love her” Jin spoke up “no? what happened to y/n?!” Jungkook said making all the other members look up worryingly, (y/f/n) could see their tired faces. “she… she isn’t eating, barely drinking any water, not moving, she’s just staying in her bed. I tried I really tried to get her up, but she wouldn’t. I need one of you but I don’t know if bringing one of you is a good idea right now….” “please… I hate what we did (y/f/n) can you please just get her to talk to at least one of us?” Hoseok said. “I-I can try. I’ll bring one member with me to her apartment and they can talk ok? Maybe one of you can get her out of her bed. Im worried about y/n…” (y/f/n) said worriedly “we are all worried about y/n” Namjoon and Yoongi practically said in sync. “ok then pick one member to come with me and we will try, yeah?” they talked among themselves before they chose Jungkook to go.

The car ride was more than uncomfortable for both Jungkook and (y/f/n). neither of them knew what to say or how to say it so it was a very quiet car ride. Even though your apartment wasn’t that far away it felt like eternity that they were both stuck in that car with each other.

They finally made it to your apartment building where Jungkook basically jumped out of the car and ran to your door. “c-can I walk in?” Jungkook quietly mumbled to (y/f/n). (y/f/n) opened the door and he ran in, looking for you, (y/f/n) pointed to your closed bedroom door and he walked over there, hesitant to open it at first but when he did, he heard you whimper to yourself. You must be having a bad dream again, usually when you had a bad dream, he would cuddle up to you and you would calm down. But now he didn’t want to touch you, he was afraid to break you, thinking you were the most fragile thing one the planet right now. ‘y/n?” he mumbled. “ugh (y/f/n) I told you I don’t want to talk about it” you said, you thought it was (y/f/n). your voice clearly sounded like you were recently crying, which only made him want to cry with you. when you smelled Jungkook cologne he wears you head spun to see him standing in front of your bedroom door and even though the room was dark you could see his tear stained eyes, his messy hair that looked like it hasn’t been tamed in a week, you saw how he was breathing. You sat up in the bed looking at him and then looking down.

He ran over onto the bed. He looked at you for a while, looking at your eyes, how your face was stained with tears. He grasped you into a hug, it was tight but soft. He didn’t want to break you but he didn’t want to let go either, before you could say anything you felt his body shaking on you, you felt your shoulder dampen. He was crying, like really crying. You just let him cry and soon enough you were crying with him. Crying just as hard as him. You grasped onto his clothes. He hurt you, but you wanted to forgive him, you wanted to forgive all of them. You didn’t like being apart, and now knowing they were probably just as hurt as you. “Jungkook” you mumbled under your breath, “shhh” Jungkook hummed still crying. You didn’t want to let go, neither of you did. When Jungkook did let, you go he stayed on your bed just staring down at your covers, he couldn’t look up to see your face again knowing how much he hurt you, how much all his members hurt you. he never wanted you to feel like that again

“y/n….” Jungkook said with a crack in his voice from the crying “I-I’m so sorry… we were stupid, you mean everything to us, I promise you…” he took you again in his arms just letting you cry it out on his shoulder in your dark room. After what felt like an hour, he helped you out of your bed and into the bathroom, he gave you some fresh clothes, and told you he was going to wait for you in the living room. He cleaned up your apartment as best as he can, not wanted you to see that and get extra stressed. He pulled out some food for you, he noticed how much skinnier you became and it worried him. He made you a soup and waited. After you came out of the bathroom, you changed into the clothes Jungkook gave you, you noticed he picked out all the clothes that the members have gotten for you. you giggled softly while walking out. Right away he looked up from his chair and gave you his biggest bunny smile when he heard your giggle. He loved your laugh, something about it always made him warm inside, call you cute and adorable and just want to hug you and never let go. You looked at the soup he made, gave him a weak smile and ate it happily.

Jungkook thought it would be a good idea to walk to the dorm seeing how it wasn’t that far and how some air could help you out a bit. It was quiet on the way there but it was a comfortable silence, he told you a bit about what the other members have been doing, how they felt about everything, you gave him another weak smile, you didn’t want to think about how hurt the members must have felt.

When you reached the dorm, you took a deep breath before opening the door and walking in. the members have been waiting for you it seemed. Their heads shot up at the noise of the door opening. Taehyung ran up to you and hugged you tightly like Jungkook did, but instead of crying, he just held you, when you hugged taehyung back you could feel him let go of a breath he was holding. you felt like he wanted to cry to you, but he wouldn’t. you just hugged him tightly telling him you were better. Hoseok also walked up to you. he looked at you, even though you had washed the tears away, he could tell from your eyes you were crying a lot.

When you had walked past the kitchen into the living room, Namjoon and Yoongi stood up right away. Namjoon looked at you for a bit before coming over to you and hugging you like the rest, he whispered into your ear how sorry he was, and you felt it. Yoongi kept on looking at you. he seemed afraid to walk up to you, to say anything to you, to touch you, he was afraid to hurt you, he didn’t seem to trust himself around you anymore. You walked up to him and you hugged him. He was surprised that you would even want to be near him but he hugged you back, he hugged you and hugged you and never wanted to let go, never want to hurt you again. Even when you backed away from the hug, he held you hand for a bit before letting go. Jin walked up to you fast after you hugged Yoongi and just cried into your shoulder. You shushed him and wrapped your hand around him “I’m so sorry y/n” he said between the crying. “I-its ok” you said while giving a weak smile. You looked around for Jimin, but didn’t seem to find him anywhere. “w-where’s Jimin?” you asked. They all looked towards his bedroom and you walked over slowly opening the door. “Jimin?” you quietly said. He ran up to you with his arms now around you, you cried into his shoulder. “y-y/n I’m so so sorry.” You let go of him he kissed your forehead and you both walked in to the living room. “s-so…”

A/N: wow that was emotional to write lmao. sorry it took me a while to write this part! I’m thinking that there will be at least one or two more parts to this, yeah? Hope you all enjoy this~~ see ya soon~ (also requests are open leave some stuff!)

Dear High School Lauren,

I have so many things I want to tell you, but I’m going to start with the most urgent. Because of all the ways I’ve seen athletic stories unfold over the years, this is the No. 1 destroyer of dreams.

You’re a young woman, but the sound of the word “woman” makes you cringe. Well-meaning coaches and parents and aunties and grannies and inappropriate uncles comment on the changing bodies of girls–not yours yet but those around you. It’s coming. You know it’s coming.

You notice what happens sometimes to female athletes. She hits puberty; her times get slower or plateau. She is confused; she is working harder than ever. Clueless adults who are overly invested in her “performance” will grieve, as if her worth is based solely on PRs. This makes you scared of growing up.

Seeing girls go through this is confusing because there is a story once told to you about running: “You get out what you put in.” You’ve heard there is a direct line between effort and improvement, between wanting it more and winning. This is a “truth” written by men, based on the experience of boys and men. Your male teammates are bathing in testosterone, a dramatic performance enhancer. You will not. You are about to bathe in different hormones, hormones that, more often than not, temporarily interrupt that promised straight line of improvement. What you need are knowledgeable coaches and parents who know how to support you during this time, to let you know it is normal, to celebrate you through development, who can zoom out on the big picture, because it is at this time that many girls give up.

You’ll see girls react to a changing body in three ways: give up, ride it out, or fight against it. With 100 percent confidence, I can tell you the best choice is to ride it out. The best is yet to come.

You will go on to race at a NCAA Division I university and watch several girls do whatever it takes to fight their changing bodies. But before you choose a school, you will go on visits. You will have meals with the teams and notice they do things differently. There is the school that has “salad with dressing on the side,” the school where everyone orders “no gluten and no dairy,” the school where the girls bring their own food from home to the restaurant… Go to the school where people order a variety of things: the burger, the chicken sandwich, the salad. Go to the school where you can order french fries and do it without shame.

Go to the school where the majority of girls look athletic and healthy, with hydrated muscles, and get their periods. Listen to how they talk about themselves–and one another. Listen to what they value.

Do they value effort or performance? What do they worry about openly? Fixations on their appearance? Or do they lift one another up to be good teammates and performers? Do they value themselves and one another by time and place and weight? Or by the whole package of who they are as people?

How do they treat the teammates who are struggling physically or mentally or psychologically? Do they isolate them? Talk behind their backs? Do they have empathy and compassion? Do they call one another up?

Like it or not Lauren, you are a woman. A strong one. Your body is at some point going to become what it is meant to be, based on a long line of strong women who have survived generations in a tough world. For most of the time, and in most cultures, what is happening to your body would be celebrated with ceremony. Women are powerful beyond your imagination. You cannot reach your power by making yourself small. And yet in competitive running, you will find yourself in a world in which you feel pressure to do just that.

Let me speak to the competitive dream chaser in you now.

You can be fast and a developed woman. In fact, you can only reach your ultimate potential if you let your body go through its changes. If you get to the dips and valleys and fight your body, starve your body, attempt to outsmart it, you will suffer. You will lose your period. You will get faster at first. And then you will get injured. And injured. And injured.
Depending on the methods you used to fight your body, you may end up destroying your relationship with food and sport for years to come. You won’t go this far, but you’ll see so many of your friends and teammates do this. In your age group, the mortality rate from anorexia is 12 times higher than any other cause of death. You will see some come close.

You will see this so much, fed by reckless coaches, fed by unhealthy team culture, fed by the desire for short-term success, that it will break your heart. It will break your heart so much that it will be difficult for you to watch many of the top high school and college races after you graduate. So many young athletes will reach out to you for help. You will learn how destructive and reckless so many coaches are, and you will want to find a way to change things.

I need you to know, I PROMISE you, that the ultimate star you are chasing is further ahead than any shiny thing you see now. The way you get there is to protect your health and protect your love of the sport above all, even as you reach for the shiny goals right in front of you. You simply do not know and cannot predict your personal path, but you’ll get there. It will look different and brighter and richer and more multi-faceted the closer you get.

I need you to know, you have always been more than a runner, more than your times, more than your state championships, more than your school records. But you will get confused. You will forget. Luckily you will have teammates and family and friends who remind you. You will go on to do almost every single thing you could have dreamed of, not in the way you imagined, not on the timeline you imagined.

And when you retire from being a pro runner after 12 years, you will be surprised at what ends up being most valuable to you. Your medals will be in a box somewhere, and you’ll never look at them. Your proudest accomplishment will be a race in which you finished last because in that race you were tested more than ever and you were brave.

Finishing seventh in the entire world in the 5K and having a bronze medal in cross country brings you a smile, the same smile as winning league with your team as a freshman in high school, the same smile as breaking 5:00 in the mile for the first time. The real life-changers, the memories that make the peach fuzz on your cheeks and the hairs on your forearms stand up, those will be braiding your teammates hair in the 15-passenger van on the way to a race; a random tempo run along a sidewalk past a gas station where you felt like you were flying while home on Christmas break; descending a forest trail at camp behind your best friend with your arms outstretched in flight; running at night with someone you are falling in love with; pushing your baby in a running stroller for the first time; passing under a canopy of trees temporarily blocking the rain on a cross country course you can’t remember the name of, the sound of your feet squelching in the mud while chasing your rival.

Protect the opportunity to make memories like those for a lifetime. You’re going to be OK being all of yourself. Make sure your teammates know it too.

Love,

Lauren

Ok, folk, sorry the queue is dead. I literally cannot keep up with how fast things are exploding in the zoo world right now, much less try to write about / post about all of the implications. I’m going to put up a masterpost of all the currently important stuff tomorrow with links and some context so people are at least aware, because just … holy shit, guys. AZA’s choice to publicly let the CEO of HSUS speak at their 2017 conference turned the entire industry on its ear. I don’t even have cogent ways to explain the degree to which things are getting messy.

  • Dick Grayson: This envelope contains my inheritance from my uncle, he died a year ago. He was so rich, he had a whole room in his house just to eat in.
  • Tim Drake: You mean like a dining room?
  • Dick Grayson: Yeah. But in Manhattan.
  • Tim Drake: Oh, dang.
  • Dick Grayson: Now, just because I'm definitely rich now doesn't mean I'm gonna forget my roots. You all get something, so fire away.
  • Damian Wayne: Dick, your friendship is gift enough for me.
  • Jason Todd: Friendship is crap. I want a Ducati Monster 821.
  • Dick Grayson: All right, Jason gets a motorcycle.
  • Barbara Gordon: Oh, cool, I want a fast sports car.
  • Dick Grayson: Come on, you can be honest.
  • Barbara Gordon: I want old, expensive books. I'll send you a list.
  • Dick Grayson: There you go. Now, let's find out what I'm worth... Ah, I'm too nervous. Bruce, you do it.
  • Bruce Wayne: [opens the envelope] It's stock, one million shares!
  • Dick Grayson: Oh, my God!
  • Bruce Wayne: ... Of Blockbuster Video stock.
  • Bruce Wayne: [hands the folder back to Dick Grayson]
  • All (except for Dick Grayson): [go back to what they were doing in disappointment]
  • Dick Grayson: What? Is that bad? I still have a Blockbuster card. WHAT HAPPENED TO BLOCKBUSTER?!
Ranger Mind Link Headcanons

-the rangers first found out about the mind link as a motivation tactic from alpha. (”The harder you train, the more connected you are! I mean, don’t you WANT to be able to read each others minds?” “Wait, what?!”)

  •  alpha explains the basics of the link, that they don’t exactly know the extent of the power seeing as human brains work differently, but essentially they can feel each others emotions

-trini is the first to connect through the link (seeing as she clears her mind while doing yoga), and the other rangers get a loud and clear message of death metal

  • zack is sitting on his train car watching her, when the music suddenly gets way too loud and he screams for her to lower it
  • billy is working tinkering on some kind of gadget when the music starts blaring causing him to snap his screwdriver in half
  • jason is asleep in his bed when he shoots up in shock, punching a hole in the wall
  • and kim is in her room holding her phone trying to decide how to ask trini out for donuts in the least platonic way possible, and due to her thoughts focusing on trini she hears it the loudest of all of them
  • which is why it makes sense every ranger suddenly hears “What is wrong with her?” in a voice oddly like kims

Summer Camp Part 1 // Shawn Mendes

Request:  I love how you write my fluff ideas so I have one!! 😂😂 You and Shawn went to the same school and hated each other so much. you two never got along (of course you were into each other) and in a school trip, your were forced to share bedrooms because of a problem. Both always shouting at each other, throwing things but one day you were fighting and Shawn shuts you up with a kiss so rough so hard but so passionate, you literally melt in his arms…❤️😊

Authors note: so there’s going to be 2 parts cos there is so much I have to write- please tell me what you think because I’m legit on the fence and contemplating deleting

“I have to WHAT?” My jaw drops open in surprise. I stare into the room from the door, two single beds taking up most of the room.

“I’m truly sorry about this Y/n, but because you signed up so late for the summer camp, Shawn’s room was the only one left with a spare bed available”. Michelle, the camp leader, tells me, sending a sympathetic smile my way.

“How does this, I can’t.. What?” I don’t understand how I ended up in this situation. I had to spend 2 weeks at a camp that I had no interest in being at. My Mother had signed me up because she didn’t want me- I quote -‘to be on my dang phone the whole summer’. I took the last spot available, two days before camp began. Because of how late notice it was- I was forced to share a room with a boy. Not just a boy but a boy I hated with my entire being. Shawn Mendes.

“We trust that putting both you and Shawn in a room won’t cause any, uh, hassles…” Michelle fiddles awkwardly, the young camp leader equally uncomfortable at telling two 17 year old’s not to get with each other over the two weeks of sharing a room. The thought made me laugh. Like I would ever want to get with Shawn.

“I didn’t think that this would be allowed- isn’t there camp policies?” I ask, gesturing between Shawn and I. My gaze flicks over to Shawn for the first time since I got here. I can’t help but admit that he did look good in the black nike shorts he was wearing, and the t-shirt adorning his figure enhanced his muscular chest.

I shake my head, I was supposed to be hating this guy- not picturing what he’d look like without a shirt.

“It isn’t.” Michelle giggles- her fair complexion suited the airy laugh she had. “But your Mum was so insistent on having you at camp that we agreed- as long as you both agreed not to do anything inappropriate”.

“Like I’d ever do anything like that with Y/n”. Shawn rolls his eyes and I send him an icy glare.

“Shut up Shawn, like you’d get any if you even tried.” I hiss, walking past him and dumping my bag on the bed yet to be covered with linen.

“Well I’m just going to head off now- check on other campers, lunch is served at 1 in the dining hall!” Michelle cheers, smiling at us before shutting the door quickly. It was like she could sense a fight which of course, was inevitably coming. Shawn and I had been going to school together since we were 15 and over the past 3 years we had never gotten along. Not once.

I grab out my bed sheets from the bag and begin the laborious process of making my bed. I feel Shawn’s eyes on me and I look at him to see him smirking.

“What?” I snap, moving around to the other side of the bed to tuck the sheet in.

“Nothing, well, I just find it funny that you think if I tried anything that you thought you would be able to resist me.”

I scoff, grabbing out my doona. “You’re insane, Shawn.”

“Says you,” he scowls, beginning to unpack his own bag.

“What are you trying to say Shawn?” I glare at him, chucking the quilt over my bed.

“Just that I don’t know how I got stuck with you.” He shrugs his shoulders.

“You think I asked to get put in a room with you? News flash Shawn- I don’t even want to be here!” He stares at me for a moment, the silencing engulfing the room.

I sigh, leaving my bag open on the floor and grabbing my camper’s pass. “I’m leaving, it’s nearly one.”

“I don’t care.” Shawn mutters, his back to me.

“Shut up Shawn,” I call to him over my shoulder before slamming the door shut to our cabin.

Its going to be a long 2 weeks.

The only good thing about camp so far was that my friend Ally had been forced to go along as well by her parents- her parents having the same reason as my Mum, that we needed to get ‘fresh air’.

Now I was sitting on a table with five other girls who we had been making conversation with.

“Hey Y/n, Shawn 2 o’clock,” Ally elbows me and I groan softly, digging my fork into my baked potato angrily.

“Whoa, girl, that baked potato doesn’t deserve your anger,” Naomi, Ally’s room mate, teases me. Even though I had only met her around 20 minutes ago, Naomi and I were developing a fast friendship.

“Its Shawn that’s got her so worked up.” Ally giggles and that one comment catches the whole table’s attention.

“Is Shawn your boyfriend Y/n?” Jordan, a short strawberry blonde sitting across the table, asks me.

“No!” I say quickly and Ally laughs.

“Shawn and Y/n are room mates for camp,” Ally tells the group, a lock of shock across most of their faces.

“Who’s Shawn?” Lacey asks, twirling her brown hair around her fingers- a habit I discovered that she did a lot.

“The one in the black shorts and t-shirt, dark brown hair.” Ally points him out.

“Damn girl, why aren’t you dating him?” Naomi asks, her eyes twinkling with humor.

“Don’t try me right now.” I point my fork at them all, Sarah and Jordan laughing at my reaction.

“They’re sworn enemies.” Ally continue to fill the group in.

“Damn right we are,” I comment, taking a bite of my baked potato.

“They also have insane sexual tension, trust me, you’ll feel it when they’re near each other-”

“Ally!” I yelp, slapping her arm which causes her to jump in surprise.

“Ow! Why would you do that?” She asks, frowning at me.

I ignore her question, looking at the girls who are all trying to hold back laughs.

“We don’t have any sexual tension guys, Ally’s just joking.” I say seriously.

“Don’t deny it Y/n, I mean Shawn is very good looking.” Naomi chuckles, winking at me. The girls nod, agreeing,

“Ugh, stop this is Shawn.” I shiver, my stomach flipping when I thought of Shawn’s curly hair and dark eyes.

“Honey, look at him- actually great time to look at him ‘cos he’s walking this way.” Naomi says. Her short dark curly hair bounces as she laughs at my shocked expression as I quickly turn to look over my shoulder where, of course, Shawn was walking straight towards me. A smirk appears on his face when he catches my gaze.

“Look at the time, got to go.” I rush, trying to get up.

“Nope, sit back down, I want to see this sexual tension live and in action.” Naomi tells me sternly, pulling my arm to sit me back down.

“Aw look at my little room mate, already made some friends,” Shawn ruffles my hair and I scowl at him, turning away from him to face forward, conveniently away from him.

“Don’t you have someone else to bother Shawn.” I growl at him, my body freezing as he leaned forward, one hand on the left side of me to grip onto the table to support his body as his chest pressed against my back. His other arm went over my right shoulder to grab a chunk of potato that I had previously cut off and chucking it into his mouth.

“You know I love to annoy you.” He smirks, licking his bottom lip.

“You know I love to hate you.” I smile sarcastically, tilting my head back to meet his eyes. “Now go away, you’ve had your fun.”

“Aw no please?” Shawn pouts, leaning closer so that his face was a few inches from mine and the familiar glare that Shawn must be so accustomed to returns to my face.

“Shut up Shawn.” I tell him, pushing his face away from mine.

“That’s her favorite thing to tell him.” I hear Ally whisper. I look back to see 6 pairs of eyes glued to Shawn and I. I give them all a warning look and everyone except Naomi and Ally return to their food.

“Ally was right, your sexual tension is crazy.” Naomi states bluntly and I feel my cheeks grow hot, Shawn’s body that was still pressed against my back was creating warning bells in my head.

“Right?” Shawn jokes, and the warning bells get louder. “We should hook up, doesn’t that sound like something we should do?” He teases, leaning closer to me again and the smell of his cologne was intoxicating and something that I shouldn’t be wanting more of.

“In your dreams Shawn.” I shove his hand off my shoulder.

“I know you will be.” He winks and my cheeks feel hotter then the sun, “How about you meet me in my room- around 9?” He grins cheekily and I roll my eyes.

“We’re sharing a room you idiot.” I mutter, resting my elbow on the table and placing my head in my hand.

“That makes everything easier then,” He grins, and a few of the other girls on the table giggle in response. I feel my stomach twist in annoyance.

“Just leave me alone Shawn.” I push my chair back and he moves out of the way to avoid getting hit.

“No can do Sweetheart.” He grins again and I clench my hands into fists.

“I’m not going to say this again. Leave. Me. Alone. I don’t like you, you don’t like me so just can we ignore each other for lets say, the rest of these two weeks? Agreed? Perfect.” I don’t give him a chance to respond before turning away, saying a quick ‘see you later’ to the girls before leaving the dinning hall.

What a great start to summer camp.

This Is Going to Be About Heroes

Enough of the educators who were at ALAN/ NCTE ‘16 have asked me for the transcript of my keynote there that I’ve finally decided to post it. Here it is, give or take.

_________

This is going to be about heroes.

I’m going to tell you three stories about heroes and bravery, and then I’m going to tell you how all three of those stories could be told differently.

Nowadays, I find myself a professional storyteller. A maker of heroes. I spend my days putting swords in stones, monsters under beds, ghosts in attics. I have learned that often the difference between a hero and a villain is merely the narrator I choose for the lens of the story. I have learned, too, that the difference between a horror and a romance is sometimes as simple as where I choose to begin the story. A tragedy and a comedy can convey the same events — the difference is in how you tell them.

I’ve also learned that this isn’t just true of the stories I write. It’s true in the story I’m living. The first hero I ever built was myself.

So. These three stories. I’m sharing these three stories about heroes because I want to talk about how the most important stories we tell are the ones we tell about ourselves. Those who have the power and wherewithal to change the narrative of the events around them are the ones who will change the future. Those who have the guts to say “that’s not my version of events” when they hear someone else telling their story are the ones who get to own their own story.

Here is story number one: I drove down to NCTE from my home in Virginia on Saturday. It was supposed to be about a seven and a half hour drive but it turned into a ten hour trip because of Atlanta traffic. Because of my car’s tiny gas tank, I ended up stopping for gas three times. Each time I pulled into a station, a thing happened, the same thing that’s been happening every time I park my car in a public place for the past month. I’ll get out of my car and swipe my card at the pump, feeling like there are eyes on me. I plug in my zip code and put the fuel nozzle in the car, and as I do, I’ll see that the eyes are attached to a motorist or a pedestrian who has paused to stare at me. By the time the tank is full and I’ve gotten my receipt, I’ll discover that they’ve made their way over to me. The conversation goes pretty much the same way every time.

Pulsar’s 10 Favorite Anime Of 2016

It’s time for my Top 10 Favorite Anime Of 2016 List!

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Im not including any sequel series (which means Sound Euphonium 2 and Food Wars: The Second Plate arent on my list, although theyre both great shows and definitely worth checking out).

2. This is strictly my opinion. If you dont see a show you liked on here, Im not bashing it or saying its not any good.

3. Im only including shows I watched all the way through to the end. There are some shows I didnt get a chance to finish like Mob Psycho 100, Orange and Shouwa Genroku that I need to revisit.

With that all said, here we go with the Honorable Mentions!

—-

HONORABLE MENTION #1: PLEASE TELL ME, GALKO-CHAN!

This is a really fun series of comedy shorts revolving around three high school girls: an otaku, a gyaru (think the Japanese equivalent of a valley girl) and a sweet but airheaded rich girl. Most of the humor is sex-related and yet the show never feels mean-spirited. Definitely worth checking out if you want something quick to watch and laugh at.

HONORABLE MENTION #2: MAGICAL GIRL RAISING PROJECT

Dark takes on the “magical girl” genre have become more and more commonplace in the aftermath of Madoka Magica. This show revolves around a mobile app game that allows you to create your own magical girl, and gives 1 in 10,000 players the ability to become a real-life superhero. But soon things take a dark and violent turn.

What separates this show from the pack is the sheer variety of powers and abilities that it features. All the girls (and one guy) have different motivations for wanting to be a superhero, and their powers are diverse and interesting. Dont let the cute art fool you: this is NOT for young kids.

HONORABLE MENTION #3: SHE AND HER CAT - EVERYTHING FLOWS

The only reason I wound up not including this show in my top ten is because its literally 4 five minute episodes. But man does it pack a punch, especially if you love animals.

This is a short series about a young woman and her aging pet cat. The show is entirely from the point of view of the cat, and you see how he views the world and how he views his owner with unconditional love. If youve ever owned a pet, take the time to watch this one.

And now its time for my Top 10 Anime of 2016. Here we go!

#10: MYRIAD COLORS PHANTOM WORLD

KyoAni’s first series of 2016 was this overlooked fun little fantasy gem about a near future in which a virus has caused people to be able to perceive extra-dimensional and paranormal beings around them. The main characters are four students of a special school for students with special abilities who can seal off and fight phantoms, or in some cases help them resolve their unfinished business so they can move on.

This show got a lot of attention early on in 2016 and just as fast seemed to drop off the radar, mostly because people seemed disappointed that it wasnt a darker/more “serious” show. But thats okay. Sometimes I just want to be entertained. And Myriad Colors does that.

#9: KONOSUBA - GOD’S BLESSING ON THIS WONDERFUL WORLD!

Konosuba is the first of two “trapped in a fantasy world” anime series on my Top 10 list. This is a trope that has been done to death, but where this one won me over was in the sheer irreverence it has for its own genre.

The main character, after dying in a rather embarrassing fashion, is magically transported to a fantasy world by a goddess who turns out to be a bit of a screw-up. In order to find work in this new world, he assembles a motley crew including a masochistic knight and a mage who only want to blow things up. Sound ridiculous? It is. And it’s absolutely hilarious.

KONOSUBA returns for a 2nd season starting this month, so you have time to catch up before then!

#8: IZETTA THE LAST WITCH

In an alternate version of World War II, the archduchess of a small country about to invaded by the Germans is kidnapped… but is then rescued by her childhood friend, who turns out to be the last witch on Earth. The witch volunteers her help in defending her friend’s country from the invaders, and soon the tide has turned in a BIG way.

Do you like watching WWII-era dogfights? Imagine one with a witch flying around using a giant rifle as a broom and blowing Nazi planes out of the sky. If that doesn’t sound cool to you, I don’t know what to say. Check this one out if you like badass female leads and awesome action sequences.

#7: KIZNAIVER

Studio TRIGGER (Kill La Kill) returned in 2016 with this sci-fi series about a group of teenagers who are forced to be part of an experiment linking them emotionally. This show connected (see what I did there) with me on multiple levels. Adolescence can be an insanely painful part of life, and many people never move on past the things that are done and said to them during this time. The characters on this show, even if they aren’t always likeable, are always UNDERSTANDABLE. I genuinely felt for all of them and wanted them to end up OK. If you like sci-fi but want something different, give this one a go.

#6: 91 DAYS

This is another great series that seemed to fly under the radar this year. I never heard many of my friends who are into anime talking about this one, and its a shame, because this show is something special.

91 DAYS is set during Prohibition and is about a young man whose entire family is murdered by the Mafia. Seven years later, while in hiding, he receives a letter giving him the names of the men responsible, and he begins to work his way into the family in order to destroy it from the inside out.

This is a fantastic revenge story, with some twists and turns you won’t expect and a darkness to it that stuck with me a long time after it ended.

#5: PLANETARIAN

“I am just a little broken…”

Prepare to have your heart a LOT broken.

PLANETARIAN takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where hostile machines have taken over the Earth. A “junker” is scavenging for supplies in a department store when he is greeted by the android mascot of the store’s rooftop planetarium… who has been in stasis for years and has no idea what has happened to the world. The junker initially wants nothing to do with her but realizing he has nowhere to go decides to hide out in the planetarium for a while, and soon gets roped into fixing the projector so the android can present the show to any guests who may show up.

If you like your sci-fi with a healthy dose of feels, check this one out. Its only 5 episodes long but it stuck with me long after I watched it, and I’ll likely be coming back to rewatch it many times in the future.

#4: YURI!!! ON ICE

Yes, an anime about gay male figure skaters made my top 10 list? Why? Because its an awesome goddamn show, that’s why.

After suffering a complete meltdown at the previous World Finals, Yuri has given up on skating and has decided to come home to Japan. No sooner has he returned than his idol, a Russian figure skater named Victor, shows up at his doorstep… wanting to become his coach.

This show is consistently fun to watch, with great animation, some incredible skating sequences, and arguably the best romantic couple of the year in anime. And tell me the opening song doesn’t get you pumped, and I’ll call you a lying sack of shit. Yuri On Ice is awesome. Watch it. Like, now.

—–

My top 3 is where it gets tricky, because any of these next three shows could have been my #1. I’d rank them all at the top in terms of quality, so I’m going with them in the order of which ones had the most emotional impact on me personally.

#3: KABANERI OF THE IRON FORTRESS

If you liked Attack On Titan, this is better. Yes, I said it. I love Attack On Titan, but this is a better show.

Set in an alternate timeline during the Industrial Revolution in Japan, a virus causes people to transform into walking corpses who soon overrun the entire country. Humans are forced to barricade themselves in walled cities and use armor-plated trains to travel from fortress to fortress. One day, in the middle of his home being overrun by the “kabane,” a young engineer who has been working on a new steam-powered weapon designed to defeat the monsters is bitten by one of them… but instead of transforming all the way, he becomes a kabaneri, a human/kabane hybrid. He joins up with a fellow female kabaneri and the survivors of his fallen city in an attempt to make their way to safety on board one of the armored trains.

This show is essentially a nonstop chase sequence through the first half, and political intrigue comes into play halfway through. If you like nonstop action, gore and terror, this is your ticket to ride.

#2: RE:ZERO
I watched the first episode of this show the day after it aired, got bored, and didn’t come back to it…until about three months later, when I kept hearing people talk about the show and how it was affecting them. While on a road trip I decided to give it another shot, and ended up binge-watching the entire series in one go. It’s that good.

RE:ZERO is about a young man who, after shopping at a convenience store, suddenly finds himself in a fantasy world straight out of the games and shows he loves. While initially thrilled to be there, he finds out rather quickly that he is completely out of his element and ends up dying a rather grisly death… only to find himself back where he started from when he first showed up in the new world. It turns out that he has the ability to come back after dying to a certain “save point” (which changes over time), and while no one around him remembers the previous timeline, he does.

So, all good right? No matter what happens you can come back and fix it? Well, not so fast. Imagine falling in love with someone only for them to not remember who you are or things you’ve talked about. Imagine seeing the people you care about die over and over again because you keep messing up. Imagine making mistakes, thinking you can fix them by dying… and coming back further along in the timeline and NOT being able to undo them.

This show takes all the issues I usually have with the “transported to a fantasy world” genre and not only addresses them but essentially makes them the focus of the show. The main character alternates between being funny and likeable and selfish and arrogant, and while he can be hard to like at times, he’s easy to understand and identify with. The supporting characters are fantastic (including arguably my favorite female character of the year, Rem the demon maid) and the story has many twists and turns, with many more to come as the show has been confirmed for second season.

I’ve never been so glad that I gave an anime a second chance as I am with RE:ZERO. Definitely check this one out.

#1: ERASED

Imagine this: when you’re a child, two of your friends and a third child you don’t know but is in your class are murdered. You were the last person to see the third victim alive, but didn’t do or say anything, and you have felt guilty ever since.

Since then, you have had a curse: every once in a while, you will relive the same three to five minutes over and over again, Groundhog Day style, until you change something. It might mean pushing someone out of the way of a car, it might mean stopping a purse snatcher. But you are stuck until you fix what needs to be fixed.

Now imagine, after coming home to find a loved one murdered, you are blamed for the crime and are about to be arrested when you feel that same “rewind” effect happening… only when you open your eyes, it is 1988, you are 11 years old walking to school (but with your 29 year old mind intact), and the murders from your childhood are about to happen again.

What would you do?

ERASED is the best anime of 2016. No other show excited me, terrified me, made me think, made me cry, or made me remember as much as this show did. Even if you don’t like anime, watch this show. It’s my #1 for a reason.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my list! If you see a favorite of yours from 2016 that’s missing, shoot me a message and I’ll check it out!

  • Danny: This envelope contains my inheritance from my uncle; he died a few months ago. He was so rich, he had a whole room just to eat in.
  • Luke: You mean like a dining room?
  • Danny: Yeah, but in Manhattan.
  • Luke: Oh, dang.
  • Danny: Now, just because I'm richer than ever doesn't mean I'm gonna forget that I was mostly raised by monks. You all get something so fire away.
  • Matt: Danny, your friendship is gift enough for me.
  • Jessica: Friendship is crap; I want a Ducati Monster 821.
  • Danny: Alright; Jessica gets a motorcycle.
  • Claire: Oh, cool. I want a fast sports car.
  • Danny: Come on; you can be honest.
  • Claire: Alright, then. I want old, expensive books; I'll send you a list.
  • Danny: There you go! Now,let's find out how much I'm worth...ah, I'm too nervous. Luke, you do it.
  • Luke: [Opens envelope] It's stock! One million shares!
  • Danny: Oh-my-goodness!!!
  • Luke: ...In Blockbuster Video stock.
  • Luke: [Hands envelope back to Danny]

  • Danny: What? Is that bad? I still have a Blockbuster Card! WHAT HAPPENED TO BLOCKBUSTER!?!?
Lazy tips for Tofu

Tofu gets a bad rap, and really it’s undeserved.

Yes, tofu tastes bad when you cook it badly, but then so does just about anything else. It’s just that we’re much more conditioned to be forgiving of bad chicken, bad cheese, etc. And at least tofu is unlikely to give you food poisoning if it’s under cooked.

Yes tofu takes some prep. But then, so do a lot of other foods. You pay more for convenience foods of many kinds because some of the work is done for you. But as far as a ‘raw ingredient’ goes, tofu is cheaper than many animal products, and when you compare it to the work involved with preparing any ‘raw ingredient’ it’s really not much different.

That being said, here’s a few ways to make dealing with tofu less effort

Pressing

Pressing tofu is kind of an art - convincing the water to come out of the soy sponge without mushing it. This is an art I refuse to master. It’s up there with the art of eating gracefully, and ironing collars.

So I just freeze the tofu I buy. If I’m planning on using it in the next two days, I move it to the fridge. Somehow, some weird magical thing happens that makes recently defrosted tofu stronger, so you can basically squeeze out almost all the water in your hands without mushing it. This doesn’t work for silken tofu though - seriously. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Another option, if you don’t care about the tofu being mushed up, is a clean tea towel, stick the tofu in there, wrap it up, and squeeze it that way.

Or don’t press it at all. This makes it less likely to absorb other flavours, but so long as you cook it enough it still tastes good.

Marinating

To be honest, I almost never bother marinating tofu for any length of time. My idea of a marinade is to throw random stuff in a bowl, then stir in some cubes of tofu. If I’m really patient, I might last a couple of hours. Usually it’s a couple of minutes.

If you want to marinate tofu to make it taste like something specific, like the ham component of a hawaiian pizza, you can make the flavours soak in a lot faster by immersing the cubes/chunks/whatever in the marinate and baking it for about ten minutes. Shallow frying with about 1cm of oil in a pot also works (avoid marinades that have a strong powder component).

Super easy marinades

  • Vinegar, Salt, Soy sauce
  • Brewers yeast (sometimes called nutritional yeast), salt, tumeric, garlic, cumin, lemon juice, oil (if you’re feeling like reaching for the spice rack)
  • Mustard, Soy sauce, Sugar, Sesame seed oil or tahini (optional, because expensive)
  • Veggie stock
  • Basically any stir fry or pasta sauce you have lying around will do

Cooking

The ways to cook tofu are pretty much endless. You can even have it raw if it works with the recipes. My favourite quick ways are;

Deep frying - It’s not really deep frying since you only need about a cm of oil in a pot. You want it to be pretty hot (but not smoking). You don’t even really need to press tofu if you’re cooking it like this, just squeeze it a bit over the sink. It’ll be crispier if you go hotter, softer if you go cooler. I often don’t flavour tofu before frying like this, I just have it with salt and maybe a little vinegar (seriously, it’s good) after. I’ve found it takes less than ten minutes to cook a bowl of nommy tofu bites. Probably not so healthy, but I’m prone to the odd treat now and then. I’ve found this also is a fast way to cook tofu that’s going to go in other things - like curries and stirfries.

Baking - If you don’t mind waiting for noms to cook (I go surf the net while I wait), you can just put whatever flavourings you want on the tofu (immersing it in veggie broth and baking is awesome too - thank you @theveganzombie), and throw it in the oven.

Shallow frying - I’ve found this takes a bit longer than I personally like, but it has its uses. If you’re frying tofu to go with other stuff, put it in first, even ahead of onions, and don’t be afraid to let it sit in the pan without being turned constantly, it’ll cook quicker if you only turn it every so often. If you want the tofu to still be crispy when you eat and you’re using a sauce, cook the tofu separately and add it at the end.

Pre-cooking

If you want nommy soy goodness straight from the fridge for sandwiches, salads, world domination, noodles, whatever, then you can make it up ahead of time, and see how long it lasts.

I pretty much never bother to do this. The last time I made tofu bites to go on a pizza, it took all my willpower to allow even two thirds of them to actually make it to the pizza. Cooked tofu does not last long when it’s within my reach.

But if you have more self control than me it’s a good way to have teh noms on hand.

Storing

Fridge - Tofu has a long shelf life, it usually comes sealed. You can keep it in the fridge for a few days after opening so long as you immerse it in fresh water and keep it sealed. For tofu that’s been cooked, just keep it sealed.

Freezer - Unless I have reason to want the tofu soft and mushy, I tend to just freeze it, and take it out when I need it. If I need to defrost it fast I just stick it in a bowl of hot water, then add more hot water when it starts to cool. This is enough to get it to the point where I can cut it without any trouble.
