D&D Maps using Spreadsheets

Ever since I first tried DM’ing, I have jumped from one method to another of creating maps for my D&D games. Recently I was using a Google Doc spreadsheet for something and it occured to me that I could use these to make maps.

What it is

I basically set the spreadsheet to be a small squared grid and apply conditional formatting to the entire grid along with a key of what means what. So once it’s set up, if I type a letter ‘T’ in a square, that square turns dark green and now represents ‘Trees’, same as ‘M’ means mountains and turns grey, ‘V’ means village, ‘C’ means city and shows as orange, and so on.

On top of the basic auto-colour coding mentioned above, you can right click any of the squares and ‘insert notes’ which gives you a text box to include any notes you have about that map-space(like a town name and who lives there)

Why it’s awesome

Super simple, hassle free
You can do it anywhere you like without needing any special software or apps (all browsers run google sheets i’m fairly sure). And it’s as easy as typing letters into a spreadsheet.

Can be shared easily
You can share it with friends thanks to the great sharing functions of google, you could even work on it at the same time as someone else(if you’re brave enough to try co-DMing).

Customisable
You can use the same method for world maps, town maps and dungeon maps. You could even make multiple pages of the documents for different levels of a dungeon.

Template/Example

I know not everyone is as into making spreadsheets as me, so below is a link to an example world map and city map (tabs down the bottom for different pages)

Example spreadsheet mapping

You should be able to click ‘File >> Make a copy’ to copy it and edit it yourself.

Other things you could do

- Hyperlink the letter to a google doc or another page in the spreadsheet
- Use symbols instead of letters, works well for dungeons, you could have slashes for up/down stairs etc.

Let me know

If you use this method please let me know how it goes for you, if you find this article confusing i’d love to hear about it so I can fix it up to make it more useful.

ART TIP: Keep a balance between digital and traditional art

because there are things traditional art will teach you that digital art won’t, and the same goes the other way

anonymous asked:

idk if i already asked this, but how do you only use 5-6 adjustment layers? it's my greatest struggle in making gifs. I can NEVER do that. I use like 10 layers max to get the look I want. although the gif makers' tips I look at always say to keep it 5-6 layers :/

Hey there! I’ve received a similar ask, and I had yet to reply to it cause I’m so behind with replying to everyone due to lack of time, so if it was you, I’m so sorry!

Before I get into anything though, I’d like to say that…. you really shouldn’t let what all the other giffers say condition what you do. What works for others may not work for you, and if you’re happy with how your colouring turns out, what does it matter if it takes you a few more layers than other people? We all colour in different ways, and obviously tutorials and advices are super useful and they can teach you some stuff you had yet to discover and it’s always great to improve, but at the end of the day what’s important is the result and if you’re happy with yours, don’t pay too much attention to what other people say or do.

The thing I always stress about is making tiny adjustments, cause if you go super crazy with those, you just end up reducing the quality of the gif, by bringing out pixels.

How the hell do I only use 5/6 layers when I’m making tiny adjustments? Well, it depends on the layers you use and how you use them.

I end up using a couple more layers if I’m making a colour porn gifset, cause I abuse of selective colour, but generally I just use curves, brightness/contrast, exposure, selective colour, colour balance and photo filter.

Out of all them, curves is the one that will impact your gif the most, and will make you lose less layers after, if you use it correctly. And by using it correctly I mean if you use the eyedrop tool with the white tip:

What this tool does is it turns whatever colour you click on with it into the whitest point of your gif, brightening everything accordingly. This is very useful especially if you’re giffing a dark scene! I’ve talked a bit about this tool here.

Everything is going to make more sense once you start using it, cause the more you practice with it, the more you get the hang of it!

What you want to do once you click on it is to click on the lightest point of your scene. Keep in mind that it’s going to turn that point into white, so if you choose a dark colour your entire gif is going to look like crap. You want to choose as close to white as you can, but if you choose actually white, it’s not going to do much of anything at all.

Now, you also need to keep in mind that this tool is going to affect the tone of your gif, based on which colour you pick, so if you pick a yellowish colour, it’s going to change the tone of the gif into blue, if you pick yellow it’s gonna make everything blue-ish and so on, going in the opposite way (so it’s very useful for those movies/tv shows that have a terrible yellow filter and such).

Example:

if I were to pick that light green/blue colour behind harley (the red dot)

my gif would turn like this:

see? that colour turned into white, the gif was brightened accordingly, but since I chose a blue/green-ish colour, now the tone is reddish!

If I were to pick harley’s hair where it’s lighter instead:

I’d get this:

much better, right?

A lot of this is trial by error. You’re going to need to click on a lot of stuff and undo it until you find a combo that works for your scene, but the more you use this tool, the more you understand how it works and the easier it gets!

Now you see why I would only need a couple more layers to be happy with my gif! And that’s by only using one tool, curves! Notice also how despite the fact that it’s a dark scene with shitty lighting, it got brightened straight away without bringing out pixels/lowering the quality!

You can achieve great results with a few layers, you just have to use the right ones ;)

guys I’m fucking oh my god look at Lucifer’s gauges when he sees Natalie is waking up

the purple is going away sharply, the despair is fading, his eyes are glowing yellow he’s sososososo happy now and then when Natalie doesn’t remember him

Ardyn Izunia Make-up and wig progress

I bought the countouring palette from NYX and couldnt wait to give it a quick test. The quick test turned into the need to try on the wig too and BAM… this happened. 😂 I’m way more satisfied now. Will have to test it properly when i got my lenses and stubble tools.

Please bear with me some more. ❤

So far i can recomment this contouring palette. But i stil need an even darker shade.

What do you think? Slowly getting there?

My mom left for good, I think. Oh, and, apparently, my dad’s the mayor now. So yeah, today really sucked ass.
Oh Nathan, I’m so sorry.

30 days back to school challenge

day three: what’s in your bag?

i got a new yellow kanken for this school year and i’ve already put some pins on it and it looks so cute!!!!!! i’m so excited to use it for the upcoming school year hahah at first glance it looks so small but it actually fits a lot:0000 so here’s what’s in my bag!

  • a folder: i use this folder for reply slips, notices, my temperature record sheet (which my homeroom teacher checks every morning to make sure we’re not sick) i find it easier to store things i need in the homeroom period in one place so i know where things are when i need them!
  • pencil case: i use a muji pencil box because i wanted to have a pencil case that is easy to carry and could hold a decent amount of pens. this pencil case holds three pens, one mechanical pencil, one eraser, one correction tape, one ruler, a clip, and a stapler. i was actually surprised when i found out that this case could hold so much with its small ass size (side note: the cover for the pencil case is actually the perfect size for my schedule so i sticked the schedule for my classes on there for my easy access!!!)
  • pencil bag: i know i already have a pencil case but hear me out!!! i found having a colour for each subject/class is really convenient and it makes things so much easier when you need to organise things such as planning a study schedule. so, i chose to buy another pencil bag for all my mildliners and some sticky tape (and correction fluid) now that’s a heavy pencil bag but you never know when you need those special supplies:>
  • planner: now we all know we absolutely need a planner to know what we’re doing a hundred percent of the time. a planner is essential for me cus i have no memory so if you tell me about an event that’s weeks away there’s no way i’ll be able to remember that. that’s why i dump all of my schedules into this nice little book and i don’t have to freak out about whether i have a test today.
  • memos: memos are so convenient and useful if you constantly forget things like i do and you need to remind yourself to for example, talk to a teacher during recess or hand in an assignment before lunch, they are also great to doodle on
  • macbook: i use google docs for most of my typed assignments and some of my notes so a notebook is definitely needed for me to work efficiently (unfortunately only some of my teachers allow us using devices during class:( )
  • charger: i bring a charger for both my phone and laptop just in case i forgot to charge the night before to save a life
  • earphones: to me, earphones are an essential whenever i go out because although we’re not allowed to listen to music in class in our school but it’s also nice to wake myself up by listening to music on the way to school and relax a bit with music after school
  • pouch: this pouch carries one lip tint, some lip balm, some moisturising cream, a mirror, and a comb. taking care of my looks wakes me up and keeps me in a good mood:D (plus, i once had lips so dry they started bleeding non-stop, that left me traumatised so i’m never going anywhere without my lip balm again)
  • some candy: i once almost fainted because i had low blood sugar so i say it’s for my health but who are we kidding i just like candy
  • hair tie: i hate sweating,,, i hate hair with sweat even more,,,,,, hair ties saves my ass
  • water bottle: i used to not understand the importance of water but boiii now i know how much i need water,,, i do choir so i usually just drink water when i’m singing and absolutely needed to drink (like after i run in pe) but now that i realised water keeps me awake and peeing a lot i remind myself to at least drink two big bottles of water before school ends:>

woww this was a long post,, i really enjoyed the process of typing this though because i’m reminding myself of what i need to bring for school and make sure i didn’t miss anything. i hope y’all enjoyed this useless information!!!
