Never blame your fans

I know many of you artists - whether you draw, write, or compose - are frustrated that your original work, especially your dream projects, aren’t getting the responses you were hoping for.

I feel the same way.

But some of you express your frustrations completely destructively and blame the world for not giving you the spotlight.

When you do that, you’re blaming your problems for existing rather than adjusting and compromising to solve them. You’re making excuses for your mistakes. You’re demanding the world to change but you are not willing to change with it.

This is the perfect mindset to NEVER succeed in anything, ever.

You need to accept some basic truths of art before you can go any further:

  • Your art should teach you as much as or more than it teaches others: If you claim your art opens horizons and widens minds, yours should be the first priority. You cannot speak without listening. You are not a righteous prophet enlightening the heathens with the true word. You are one humble person and your art is one humble person’s story.
  • There are no new stories, but there are always new storytellers. That amazing idea you have that nobody’s ever thought of before? Someone has. But nobody has told the story your way, or drawn the character your way, or sung the song your way. Art is not about being new. It is about being you.
  • Popular art is all about the beholder. All these shows and games with so much fan art? They got to that level because they command a personal investment from and serve the viewer - they have worlds their fans want to be part of, and your canon will be swept aside along the way. You the artist are not a god or a wise sage. You are a guide and a footman. To be an artist is to be humanity’s servant, not its lord - and there’s no shame in that.
  • Most of your fans are not artists or art critics. While there will be a good number of them in your fanbase, the vast majority are not going to be super-open-minded creative thinkers who value every single opinion, outlook, and story just because it’s done technically well. They will be ordinary people with ordinary, selfish interests, and they will care about your content more than your talent. You have to balance what you want to draw with what everyone wants to see.

But the most important part of being an artist or really a person at all is to understand this:

Nobody owes you success.

Nobody is under any obligation to pay anything you produce a second glance or support or promote it in any way.

Nobody is spiting or robbing you by not giving you a like or a reblog or a follow.

Every single gesture of appreciation you receive from someone is a courtesy - a gift that you earn, not a right you’re entitled to.

It is not the job of your audience to love your work. It is your job to make it lovable. And just because you are working really hard does not mean you are working in the right direction.

I know that thousands upon thousands of artists put hours or months or years into a project and feel like they get nothing in return. Sometimes it is not how hard you’re working but what you’re working for that is the problem.

Sometimes you need to slow down and think, “Do I have to have this just so? What would the kind of person interested in my work be looking for, and where can I address it? Am I maybe taking myself and my work a little too seriously?”

And a lot of artists don’t realize that as an amateur, you are the sole proprietor - you are your art. Whether people like you determines whether they like your art.

And that’s why when you blame everybody else and post ungrateful, catty garbage like this:

… you don’t subsequently become the next Toby Fox.

The simple fact is that people will pay you attention if they think your offering + your hassle are worth their attention.

You need to create a world that someone other than you will have fun in and you need to be a good host to everyone who visits

You need a world that will welcome your fans with open arms.

You need to build a world people can live & play in.

And you and your world need to appreciate your fans just for showing up.

Because this is exactly what the big fish do.

because they spread your work around to more people without shanking you on credit and who gets the likes

because they make your work show up sooner & more often on searches and are simply a nice gesture

because they take time out and pay good money to listen to your story and make you from a pauper into a prince

because if you appreciate no one, no one will appreciate you, nor should they

It’s finally finished! I wanted to make this comic for the snap election, but if the Tories win I feel like it’s gonna be relevant for the next few years.

I messaged a few of the spoonie blogs I follow to see if they would be okay with me tagging them in this. I got responses from @spooniediaries and @heyatleastitsnotcancer but I didn’t want to tag anyone else who hadn’t given me their consent.

Caption/script under the cut - please reblog and share. (Note: the captioning is reaaaaally long - it might crash your phone if you’re on mobile).

Genocide of Tutsi in Rwanda (1994)

I haven’t seen a post that really depicts the history of Rwanda yet. So here’s my little contribution. By the way, thanks for the posts you reblogged.

Before the colonization, Rwanda was made of three social classes : Tutsi (10-15%), Hutu (over 80%) and Twa (less than 1%). Tutsi (upper social class) were cattle breeders, Hutu were farmers and Twa (lower social class) were hunters. One could become Tutsi or Hutu by marriage for example. They all had the same language, same religion and same culture.

German settlers arrived in Rwanda in the end of 19th century. They thought that Tutsi were more intelligent and more beautiful (according to European beauty standards of course : tall, skinny, light-skinned, thin nose, thin lips etc.). They thought that Hutu were boor, stupid and ugly (again, according to European beauty standards : shorter, huge lips, large nose etc). Twa were very short and seen as a species between humans and monkeys.
After losing WWI, Germany gave Rwanda (and Burundi, which is like the twin of Rwanda with same language, same social classes etc) to Belgium. Belgians thought the same as Germans and started to gather all Rwandans and measure their height, their nose, etc to see if they were from the superior race (aka Tutsi) or inferior race (aka Hutu (or Twa but Twa were a very small minority)). Because of that, some Hutu became Tutsi just because they “looked” Tutsi and vice versa. Belgians privileged Tutsi over Hutu. They said only Tutsi could rule the country because they were the only intelligent ones. Tutsi were privileged in administration, education etc. Eventually in the 50s, Tutsi Rwandans asked for independence and Belgians didn’t want to lose their colony so they started to talk to Hutu who’d been discriminated against for a few decades. They said : “Look how Tutsi despise you! They think only they can rule the country but this country is yours! They don’t even come from here, they stole your land (there’s a myth saying that Twa were the first inhabitants in Rwanda, Hutu came from West Africa and Tutsi were the last ones to arrive in Rwanda and forced Hutu to subject to them). You have to rebel against Tutsi supremacy!” So that’s what Hutu did in 1959. The Tutsi King fled. Hutu killed thousands of Tutsi with the support of Belgian settlers and Catholic church, and hundreds thousands of Tutsi had to flee to Uganda and Tanzania. Rwanda became a Republic in 1961 and Rwandans elected a Hutu president named Kayibanda. Finally Rwanda became independent in 1962.

The president Kayibanda was an extremist and under his leadership, thousands of Tutsi were killed in 1963 and in 1972, just for being Tutsi. Their homes were burnt, they were stolen and beaten up. They were fired from their jobs, fired from schools. And hundreds thousands of them fled outside the country. In 1973, a Hutu man staged a coup d'état and became president. His name’s Habyiarimana He seemed a little bit more accepting of Tutsi but he still didn’t want the Tutsi exiles to come back. Because of that, the Tutsi exiles with the help of Hutu political opponents who had also fled created an army called PRF (Patriotic Rwandan Front) to come back to Rwanda by force, in 1987. The PRF declared war against the Rwandan government in 1990 and the war went on until 1994. During those 4 years, innocent Tutsi were killed or imprisonned by the government every time PRF tried to attack the government army. There was a huge propaganda against Tutsi (through the Radio for example) and that propaganda made Hutu think that Tutsi wanted to take back the power like under the Belgian colonization. Therefore, every Tutsi was an enemy.

On April 6, 1994, the president’s plane was shot down. Hutu extremists might be responisble for that. The day after, moderate Hutu were killed by extremist Hutu and the genocide of Tutsi started, which made about 1 million victims in 3 months. Rwanda’s population was about 7 millions at that time. The genocide was planned and organised by the Hutu extremist government (as I said, the moderate members were killed) and executed by militia who recruited Hutu civilians and gave them machetes, grenades, and guns.

France had been an ally of Rwanda since its independence. France helped Rwanda fight back against the PRF during the war until end of 1993. France also trained Rwandan soliders (the army was made of 5,000 men in 1990 and 35,000 men in 1994 because of France). France gave arms and ammunition to Rwanda even after the genocide started. France never asked President Habyirimana to stop discrimination and killings of Tutsi. Actually the French President and Habyirimana were good friends. In June 1994, France decided to take action in Rwanda, officially to save Tutsi but its intention is very contested today and we think their main goal was to not let the PRF win the war, because if they did, Rwanda would become English-speaking (PRF was made of people who grew up in Uganda and Tanzania so they spoke English) instead of French-speaking and France still wanted Rwanda to be French-speaking so that they could have an influence on it. The thing is the PRF was actually liberating Tutsi by chasing the Hutu extremist killers so fighting against them meant letting more Tutsi being killed. France or French politicians have never been sentenced for that.

Belgium also was an ally of Rwanda until 1991 when they stopped supporting Rwanda because of the murders of Tutsi.

While the genocide was happening, even though everyone knew it was a genocide, the UN didn’t want to admit it was, because otherwise they would have had to take action and almost no country wanted to send their soldiers to Rwanda.

I really, really, wanted to emphasize some things:
1. Colonization played a big role in Rwanda self-destruction
2. Tutsi were discriminated against and killed for years before the genocide of 1994 happened
3. The genocide didn’t happen because the president’s plane was shot down. Extermination plans were already known by France and UN for months/years. It is important to remember that, because in the West, people like to think that Hutu turned crazy just because their president was killed and it doesn’t really surprise anyone because “Africans are savage and violent and uncivilised anyways”.
4. The genocide could have been avoided or at least there could have been way less victims if the UN and the rest of the world had cared about the 1 million innocent people who were being slaughtered (mostly Tutsi but also Hutu who tried to protect Tutsi)

If anyone wants to ask questions I’ll be glad to answer.

Btw, I am Belgian and Rwandan.

There has been a Decepticon emblem somewhere on my person every day since the election.

Today I saw a post that upset me. It was basically stating that half the fandom is incorrect to see the Decepticons as the ‘real’ good guys, and reiterated all the reasons that they’re terrible and the Autobots are, were, and always will be the only good guys.

I may have growled ‘fuck you’ at the computer, almost reblogged with an angry comment…and then looked at myself with horror, because I make it my policy not to be negative at someone I’ve never met, or their thoughts, on such slim basis. Compassion is more important than anything else; we are all hurting, and it is so easy to do further damage that, especially on a platform such as tumblr, it does well to watch one’s words very, very carefully. Fictional characters are not worth doing real, tangible harm over.

So why the hell was I so upset that I almost broke my own rules?

The election.

I have worn a Decepticon emblem somewhere on my person every day since the election. Earrings. My windbreaker. A t-shirt. But mostly the earrings, since they’re subtle and pass mostly unremarked. I’m even contemplating a tattoo, more seriously than ever before.

I’m in agony. I’m a policy student; I specialize in public health policy. A few weeks ago, my mentor quite literally told me to hold off on entering the workforce for the next four years; he feels that me starting a career under the Trump Administration would be a very bad idea. At the same time, I’m significantly changing the course of my immediate future in light of the election; I’m applying to Teach For America, which has an LGBT initiative to recruit LGBT teachers. It’s intended to make up grade and graduation (and survival) differences between LGBT and straight students. I’m going to actively pursue being placed in a red state, where I can do the most good.

It’s not like I don’t understand this is dangerous. There is a large part of me that wants to flee the country (New Zealand being the favorite refuge, right now). But my family didn’t leave China during the Cultural Revolution, though it killed my great-grandparents and led to the torture and humiliation of many of my other family members. My grandmother had to be almost forcefully sent to the US because the rest of the family knew damn well her opinionated nature and total disregard for her own safety would get her dead. But it wasn’t the first time the family had weathered horrors. I know too well that it won’t be the last. And if my great-grandparents could stay in China then, then no incompetent orange baboon’s arse will chase me from the United States.

I’m bi. I’m multiracial. I’m a woman. I’m an intellectual. This is not a good combination in Trump’s America. But I’m not afraid.

Because I think about Megatron every time I start browsing the New Zealand visa site. Megatron, and my family.

We’ve been weaponizing words for generations. Two thousand years, in fact. Megatron, the young miner working in the dark for a better world, shaping words to change sparks, speaks to me on a deep level. This is what we have done for those two thousand years. And like Megatron, we have paid a price. Very often in blood. We’ve never been good at shutting up.

Megatron is both a power fantasy and a cautionary tale for me right now, and right now, what I really need is the power fantasy. I feel incredibly helpless; I am not the only one. Megatron, someone who starts out so utterly helpless, gives me hope that I, too, may yet be powerful one day. That I may be capable of righting the injustices that cause me such pain now.

I do not mean to excuse his atrocities. I am repulsed by them perhaps more than many others, because I understand how easy it might be to slip over the edge to committing them. (Anyone who tells you it is easy not to slip over that edge is a person to be very frightened of; they obviously do not see themselves as capable of horror, and those people are the ones most likely to commit horrors–they do not examine themselves or their motivations, they believe they are utterly in the right, and that is the most dangerous of persons).

In the wake of this election, we all feel helpless. We are suddenly enemies in our own countries. Our neighbors turn on us for our compassion, for our liberal sentiments and our belief that all people are created equal. Does We the People still cover us? We’re not sure. There are so many who would say no. There are so many who believe we’re seeing the rise of another Hitler.

Megatron rebelled against an authoritarian government. The lowest of the low, he shattered the monstrous system that treated him and his fellows as disposable objects. We are facing a future in which we are disposable objects. Is it any wonder we find hope in him? Is it any wonder that, seeing Trump get another pass for a lie, or use a tweet to cover up his nefarious dealings, you are being deceived gains new, immediate meaning? How about rise up?

It’s not Optimus who gives us hope, Optimus who was a cop in IDW, Optimus, the well-meaning supporter of the status quo (that very same status quo that has so failed us!).

It’s Megatron, who may have fallen from grace, but who understands. Who was the miner who toppled an empire.

You may interpret canon as you wish. I would never want to step on someone’s toes for that. But for all you folks wondering why the hell fandom has suddenly decided the Decepticons are more appealing…

…it’s very simple. We’ve just realized we’re in their position.

Thank you for all

its weird having symptoms that seemingly contradict at first. like i really rarely have interest in other people’s lives and i’m just not able to care about them much, but at the same time, i still desperately need their approval and am scared of what they think of me and what they might do behind my back.

it’s a lot more difficult to build relationships that you paradoxically need when you’re not naturally inclined to do the things that are considered the building blocks of them, (e.g, message people frequently, engage emotionally, etc)

Femslashing It Up 2k17

To start off 2017, let’s take a look at where femslash is at right now. Here’s the current number of fics for the top ten pairings on AO3:

  • Drarry: 20,358
  • Wolfstar: 9,183
  • Snarry: 7,914
  • Ronmione: 5,543
  • Hinny: 4,356
  • Jily: 4,065
  • Dramione: 3,953
  • Snape/Hermione: 2,280
  • Snape/Lupin: 2,111
  • Scorbus: 614

Note the complete lack of f/f pairings in the top ten. Also wtf is up with all this snape crap? After clicking the f/f box, here are the stats:

  1. Drarry: 512
  2. Linny: 443
  3. Ronmione: 353
  4. Ginmione: 292
  5. Hinny: 275
  6. Wolfstar: 256
  7. Pansmione: 238
  8. Hermione/Luna: 167
  9. Jily: 162
  10. Fleur/Hermione: 97

So, um, yeah. The top “f/f” ship is Drarry, and only half the ships in the top ten are actually femslash pairings. Of all the fics in the HP fandom, only about 1/10 are femslash. So then we arrive at the question: why?

Common excuses reasons I hear for having so little femslash:

  • The protagonist is a guy, so it only makes sense that the top pairings include him. Yeah, true, but…they don’t. Seven pairings in the top ten don’t.
  • The fandom is full of straight girls fetishizing gay men. Fetishization is definitely a problem–in every fandom, not just HP. But it also isn’t a good reason for so little femslash. To start, generalizations like this are negative and damage fandom unity, pinning people against each other. Second, if the entire m/m category was fetishized smut for people to masturbate to, this might be the case. But…it’s not. There are thousands of meaningful, in-character m/m fics that people of every sexuality can enjoy, because fanfic isn’t just about sex (though that can be a major factor, and that’s okay, too!). It’s about reimagining canon and seeing your favorite characters face new situations and go on new adventures and fall in love and more. So if we can have non-fetishizing m/m fics, then we should be able to have f/f fics that meet the same criteria.
  • That stupid nonsense where people hate female characters that get in the way of m/m ships. Like??? Femslash solves this??? But so often it’s part of the reason there isn’t any. Think about it. Ginny doesn’t have to be the raging, jealous ex in the Harry/Draco equation. She can date Luna. Simple as that.
  • Femslash is never as well developed because the female characters are two-dimensional. Sure, female characters don’t interact with each other very often in Harry Potter, but in no way are they two-dimensional. Part of the magic of Harry Potter is that JKR develops even her side characters extraordinarily well. If that’s not being conveyed in f/f fanfic, then that’s our challenge–to bring JKR’s beautiful, dynamic characters to life.
  • Straight up sexism. There seems to be this idea that sex and relationships aren’t as meaningful or important if there isn’t a man involved. I don’t think this really needs an explanation–can we all agree that’s just…wrong? Cool? Cool.

Now that we’ve established the issue and rebutted the inhibitors of f/f pairings, let’s look at the reasons we should all contribute to the femslash revolution:

  • To get rid of the stereotype of objectification. Lots of the f/f out there is fetishized rubbish, and it gives sapphic women a bad name (remember when commotion with the lesbian tag? yeah me, too). By creating more realistic, meaningful femslash content, we can start changing those stereotypes and normalizing sapphic relationships. Yay!
  • vAriEty… Let’s make this simple. More pairings, more diversity, more fics, more content, more.
  • Equality, anyone? There’s so much sexism in the world without us contributing to it. Hermione wouldn’t stand for it. Ginny wouldn’t take this sitting down. (funny how those two expressions mean the same thing) Neither should the rest of us.
  • It’s awesome. Like seriously. Writing femslash. Reading femslash. Creating femslash art, aesthetics, headcanons. Viewing femslash art, aesthetics, headcanons. Amazing. 10/10. Would recommend.

Reminder: You don’t have to feel guilty for m/m pairings. My blog title is “Riddikulusly Drarry”–not going to judge. The purpose of this isn’t to keep you from shipping your otp. It’s to bring awareness to the lack of femslash and encourage the creation of more. We’re trying to lift f/f pairings up, not bring m/m down.

So…what now? We make it happen. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

  • Like and reblog this post to spread the word
  • Follow blogs supportive of or devoted to femslash (ie. @hpfemslashweek @femslasharmy @harrypotterfemslash @nymphadoravtonks and @ginnys to name a few) and reply with your personal favorites if ya like!
  • Read some femslash. Either you’ll be lucky and find some of the beautiful gems out there, or you’ll see why we need a revolution. Win-win.

Fragments Masterlist

“Um, Dean, why are you getting in the back seat?” The three of you had just come out of the woods after another hunt. It seemed you’d been marathon hunting lately, not that you cared. It actually seemed to help keep your mind off everything. You enjoyed it.

“Decided to let Sammy drive for awhile. Thought I’d sit back here with you.” Dean shrugged. “Are you not ok with that?”

“I’m fine with it, unless you’re back here to gloat about killing Hitler some more because if you are I’m gonna throw you into traffic.” Sam’s laughter reverberated through the car but Dean didn’t find you at all funny.

“Killing Hitler is kind of a big deal, Y/N.” Dean grumbled. “You could show some more gratitude. Especially since I saved your ass from some Nazis too.”

“I know. I was there.” You rolled your eyes as Sam started up the car and started driving away. “But you really, really don’t need to tell me about it another thousand times. I got it.”

“Geez. Testy much?” You shot Dean a glare and he held up his hands in surrender. “Sorry.”

“It’s so good to have you back.” Sam chuckled.

“Aw, thanks Sam.” You giggled. “Someone has to keep your brother’s ego in check.”

My watch has ended...

I started this blog 1 year and 2 months ago. I wanted to create a gallery with all the pictures of Caitriona during her modeling days. To celebrate her amazing work as a successful model. I spent hours searching, looking at thousands of photos to try to spot her. It was fun, like a treasure hunting. Sometimes i was like “wow” or “wtf is that?”. Every time i found a new fashion show i was excited, mesmerized by Caitriona and her “runway style”. So unique, fierce, sexy, self-confident and funny sometimes. Through 2000 to 2013, i’ve found 487 shows and i’m sure there are more out there. I couldn’t have found all of these shows without the help of some people during my quest. Thank you @atraveleramongearth, @balfyoddlyeager, @lulu-tan79 and @the-sassynach.

The important question now is what i’ll do with this blog… i don’t know yet… Maybe i’ll post collages, manip once in a while… Or maybe i’ll create another blog to interact more with people, to reblog and to post various stuff. Anyway i’ll stay around because even if it’s not fun everydays lately i’ve made good friends with who i like to talk and the women here are so funny, strong and inspiring. My inbox will stay open if you have questions or if someone find new fashion shows i could add to the list.

Thank you to all of you who liked, reblogged, commented on my posts. I hope you liked it and it was a fun ride for you too. I salute you “and in case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!”.

PS: i don’t stop posting fashion photos because of all the things that happened lately. It’s just because i don’t have any pictures left to post and there are no new shows on my list ;-)

Wow Just Wow

Behold fandom:

I’m shaking right now. This is so demeaning on so many levels to so many people, real and fictional.

You like Finnrey over the possibility of Finnrose because of preference? Great, good for you, I got no beef with you. You think Finnrey is more likely than Finnrose? Great, good for you, I got no beef with you either.

But if you value Finnrey over Finnrose because you think the latter is “anti-black”? Fuck you. Seriously how dare you. First of all, you are hinging Finn’s worth as a character of color upon whether or not he gets with the white female lead. Not on his storyline, not on his personality and role or John Boyega’s skills as a performer, but on whether or not he gets with a white woman. That is disgusting, you hear me? Disgusting! I really do not care what you saw or thought you saw in TFA, this sense of entitlement and this linking of Finn’s worth, as a black man, to a romance with Rey is one of the most vile things I’ve seen directed at Finn, bar none!

You are elevating white pussy above Asian pussy. That’s what you’re doing. By saying that Finnrose is “anti-black” you are saying the black man is degraded by being denied access to the white woman, instead settling for the lesser Asian woman, who, as we know, surely must only exist as a device for the evil white supremacist filmmakers to prevent Finn from getting white pussy. How dare you! So the only measure of progress, the only sign of Finn’s worth is contingent upon the white woman? And derailed by the Asian woman? Only BMWW relationships count as progressive? You are reducing Rose to a cockblock for the sake of a fucking ship that like all ships at this point isn’t even fucking canon. Get the fuck out of here with this Anti-Asian misogynist bullshit.

Mixed Asian woman here. This was brought to my attention by a black female fan. We both feel demeaned and nauseous from reading this, from knowing someone is being so openly racist in the fandom - all for the sake of “social justice” no less! You don’t like FinnRose? You want FinnRey to happen instead? That’s fine. Just say that. But don’t you dare make up anti-Asian phony social justice excuses to qualify your racist bullshit and have the gall to say that you are doing it to fight racism on behalf of a fictional character. Honestly, this is just appalling. This is low even for an infamously awful blog that has many, many low points.

And Idgaf if you hate Kathleen Kennedy you don’t get to misappropriate the KKK for your shit talking points. The Klan are violent tyrants responsible for thousands of deaths. To even jokingly say that Kennedy is one of because of the influence you think she has on casting that you don’t like boo hoo hoo is beyond insulting to decency.

P.S. If you find yourself wanting to defend the racist bull crap I just showed you, don’t reblog or respond. I am 110% uninterested in what you have to say.

Sam & Fitness

Okay. I know there is a lot of BS going on right now…I am hardly immune. But unlike some that are sick of seeing MPC stuff or Sam at the gym, and voice it often, I am not. And not just because he looks good.

Truth is…I WISH I had his drive for health and well-being. I wish I would rather go to the gym than…well, basically anything else. I just don’t. That probably something to do with depression, because I know I actually feel better when I eat properly and work out. But I HATE cooking and I HATE the gym. I love being outside. I hiked like a mad woman when I lived in Calgary. The Rockies are my home. But moving to Vancouver, several years ago, screwed it all up. We have beautiful mountains, but they are FULL of people. There’s no solitude here, because this is a city that gets out and does shit. You can’t even find a bush to pee in, on a hike, without cozying up to someone else doing the same. And that was a major part of my hiking with my dog…to just be in the quiet.

So, while I did sign up for MPC for the second year in the row, due to life and recent surgery, I’ve done nothing. And my head isn’t there because of complications.

BUT, I still support Sam with his health program. He’s helped a lot of people. A LOT. And while most of us know of it and him because of Outlander, he has every right to be proud of the program he created and post about it on his own Twitter page or Instagram, a thousand times over, if he wishes. He deserves recognition for all that hard work. Just like he deserves the recognition for his hard work in Outlander.

So, I will absolutely reblog the Men’s Fitness stuff and any gym photos, because hopefully, one day, those photos will wake me the fuck up to start taking charge of my own health.

Fun fair with the Family - Batmom x Batfam (REPOST please READ the explanation right under the summary :-( )

Summary : Batmom decides to take her family to the fun fair…She quickly realizes it might not be her best idea ever.

(My master list, by the way : Right here )

Repost because, and this time I really don’t know how, the original post got erased…BUT I had it backed up for once. So here. FUCK. Hum. Sorry. But it had almost 100 notes, and comment people left I didn’t even had time to read because the story simply disappeared…I’m a bit bummed out right now…Is it too much to ask if you could like, reblog and comment again ? I kinda feel bad, it’s not my style to ask those things…I’m so sorry for that, but it’s a bit discouraging, to write something, and to see that apparently it was liked, but to not know who liked it, what were the comments etc etc, especially since this time, I didn’t do anything, the story simply disappeared…Anyway, hope you’ll enjoy, and re-enjoy if you already read it :’-(

Not even an hour in, and you know you made a huge mistake bringing them here. All at the same time. They were going to be the death of you, so much energy…But it was just so rare that you all had some free times at once…You just wanted to spend some time with them.

It all started so well though.

*******************

You woke up in the best way possible : with your Bruce’s lips trailing kisses on your neck, shoulders and back, his arms wrapped around you. You shifted around, and before you could say anything, he kissed your temple, the corner of your mouth, slowly putting butterfly kisses on your face, to finally kiss you on the lips.

You melted in the kiss, and squeezed his large frame against you, your arms struggling to wrap around him. Damn that man was big. When he pulls away, you can’t help but grin at him, and he gives you the smile he only reserved to you. A real, pure smile. You nuzzle his neck, and he let out a contended sigh.

-You’re alright ?

-More than alright my love, as always when you’re here.

-My sweet Broosh. You know what I mean.

-I am alright. Not even a single bruise or scratch. The boys are too. Calm night.

-I like those.

-I like you.

-I love you.

-Oh yeah, that too. I love you (Y/N).

-Well, here’s for our morning’s cheesy ritual…We probably should get up.

-I have the entire day off.

-Oh ? Well then, what’s the hurry right ?

He smiles once more at you, and you crash your lips on his, climbing on him to straddle him. One of his hand tangles itself in your (H/L) (H/C) hair, the other goes to your waist and his grip is almost bruising. He cannot stop himself, you always had a strong and immediate effect on him…He rolls on top of you, and you wrap your arms around his neck, your legs around his waist.

-What’s the hurry indeed.

I'm really sad about something I don't understand and was hoping you could explain. Why do people block without giving a reason to? I don't why it first seems like it's all going so well then the next you're blocked and you don't know why or what you did or said wrong? It's happened twice now and to say it hurts is an understatement.

Oh, my precious Kabby babies.  Circle up, it’s time for some firm but gentle life advice from Mom.

First of all, unless I personally am the person who blocked you (which I’m obviously not since we’re having this conversation!), in a very real sense the short answer to this question is that you know I can’t actually answer this question.  You’re asking me to tell you why a person I don’t know did a thing for which I have no context, and for which there could be a thousand reasons. So in a concrete, specific sense, my answer is: I do not know.

However.

(You knew there was going to be a however.)

Social media is a deeply personal avenue for self-expression and it’s also a world where many of us spend a great deal of our time, which means that we have the full and free right to customize it into exactly what we want it to be.  The things that you post are personal reflections of you, which is  why it bums you out when someone mutes or blocks or doesn’t follow back; it feels on some level like a personal rejection.  But the space you curate is also a personal reflection of you.  You have the right to post anything you want and other people have the right to choose not to see it.  Both of those rights are equal, even though you’re only on one side so naturally the other one feels like it’s in some way “wrong.”

I’m speaking with zero context for what your preexisting relationship with these people was beforehand (like obviously if it was a close friend and they blocked you out of nowhere, you’re going to have to sort that out with them directly, I can’t advise you there), but it’s important to remember that there may be no “right” and wrong” in this scenario.  It’s fully possible for both of these things to peacefully coexist at the same time:

1) your absolute right to feel a little bit rejected and hurt that a stranger on the internet made the choice that they didn’t want your social media sphere to overlap with their social media sphere,

and

2) that other person’s absolute right to say “if something or someone makes me feel even the tiniest bit ‘nope’ I am purging it out of this space so it is exactly what I want and need it to be.”

They don’t need to have a reason.  That sucks, when you’re on the receiving end of it, which all of us have been - it truly and genuinely sucks - but it’s also reality.  One of the hard truths that incidents like this make us sometimes have to face - and we don’t want to face these things, because they can feel really icky and vulnerable and ping all the little gremlins in our brain  - is this:

nobody on the internet owes you their time or attention for anything you do or say.

This sounds mean and brutal, and I don’t mean it to be, because you know mom loves you, but it’s incredibly important, so I’m going to say it again to make sure that if nothing else, this gets through:

nobody on the internet owes you their time or attention for anything you do or say.

The celebs you stan don’t owe you a response to your tweet, just because you want one.  The people you tag in meta don’t owe you reblogging it to continue having that conversation with you forever, just because you want to prove you’re right.  The fans of the fic you write for your most popular ship don’t owe you crossing over to give you hits on your rare-pair fic if they don’t feel like it.  Nobody owes you a certain number of followers, nobody owes you a response to every anon you send them, nobody owes you finishing that fic you like in time for them to read it when they feel like reading it.  We owe each other one thing and one thing only: basic human decency.  That’s it.  Everything else is freely offered to the world, and freely taken by the people who want it.  It’s not a transactional exchange.  If you make art or write fic and you put it out there into the world, you’ve done a cool thing, and whether it gets ten hits or thousands it was still worth doing.  There will be people who aren’t interested, but if you get hung up on feeling rejected by that, it will paralyze you.

Social media is personal. That’s unavoidable.  It’s an extension of ourselves.  When someone is cruel to you or to one of your friends on the internet, even if it’s an anonymous stranger, it feels shitty.  When you express an opinion about something and a ton of people reblog it and the tags are full of “OMG YES THISSSSS”, it feels great.  We all experience that in different ways.  Society has always selected arbitrary measures for young girls and women to live up to in order to feel like they’re popular or they’re approved by the cool kids, and right now it’s things like “how many followers do you have” and “did you get an RT from a celebrity” and “how many likes on your posts”.  So on a primal level, maybe having someone you thought was a friend block you on Twitter or Tumblr hits you in the same deep core place as having the cool kids not come to your birthday party.  That feeling is super real!  It brings up alllllll that deep stuff we try to hide and pretend that we’re above experiencing, but we all have those squishy vulnerable inner selves that just need the cool kids to like us and we feel bad when they don’t.

I had this exact conversation with my therapist a few weeks ago when she was giving me a hard time because my book has 60 reviews on Amazon, of which like the majority are 5 stars with two negative ones, and I have both the negative ones like memorized.  And she was like “CLAIRE.  WHAT THE HELL.  WHY DO YOU DO THIS?  58 POSITIVE AND YOU CANNOT QUOTE A SINGLE ONE.  TWO SHITTY ONES AND YOU KNOW THEM VERBATIM.  THAT IS NOT HEALTHY BEHAVIOR.”  And I was like “… . okay fine when you put it that way, yes I do sound like a crazy person.”  So like my advice to you – advice which I have just proven I am absolute garbage at taking myself, so like I may have just eroded my own credibility in my efforts to help – is to remember that you probably have a lot more than two followers so honestly this is probably not a bad collective ratio, and there may be lots of people who are very interested in what you have to say but you’ve focused a lot of your energy on these two people and it’s worth giving some thought as to why that is.

My question for you is this: what is the net negative impact of having these two people block you on social media? Like in an actual, concrete way, separate from those sort of core gut “I feel unloved in this moment” feelings, what is the effect on your life?  You might be surprised.  It might be zero.  In which case, let yourself feel those feelings, experience them as valid, and then breathe through them and move on and keep on doin’ you.

I’m pushing back on you a little bit here very gently because it feels, reading this anon, like you’ve made a determination of hurtful intent on the part of the person who blocked you, or at the very least a certainty that this choice that made was about you and not about them.  That the fact that things seemed to be going fine and then they blocked you means you were somehow intentionally misled or mistreated.  Be really, really, really careful about deciding the cool girl didn’t come to your birthday party because she’s a bitch who wanted to make you feel terrible and is sitting somewhere cackling at the thought of your sad lil’ face waiting by the front door; maybe she didn’t come to your birthday party because she has depression and it’s hard for her to leave the house sometimes and she knew your party would be loud and wild and crazy and too much for her brain to handle right now. Be careful about presuming negative intent with no proof it exists.  The internet makes this so easy, the internet conditions us for this, and it conditions us to respond in kind. The worst thing you could do here is to, like, make a callout post or subtweet in the hopes that it will get back to them and they’ll feel bad, or to sic your other followers onto them, because that turns this into a situation that really does have a right and wrong; and since you don’t know if they were trying to make you feel shitty, or just went on a big block/mute purge to whittle their list down for mental health reasons that are totally their own, once things escalate you can’t put the horse back in the barn. It’s too late.  Now it’s A Thing, when maybe it never really needed to be A Thing.  And in almost all situations for almost all people in almost all ways, Kabby Mom’s advice is going to be, “please think carefully before you make this A Thing.”

This got long, I’ve been having a lot of thoughts lately about the conversations I’m always having with fandom folks the way we let social media permeate and shape our sense of self, in good ways and bad, so I apologize for my verbosity but also not really because that’s how things roll over in Kabby Mom’s Advice Corner.  But I will sum up in bullet points for those of you who have been skimming, to bring you up to speed:

  1. Everyone has the right to curate their own social media space however they see fit, and they don’t have to explain their reasons.
  2. They aren’t obligated to include you in that space even if you want them to.
  3. None of that is an objective measure of your worth as a person or a sign that you should stop being you on the internet.
  4. Your feelings of rejection come from a real place and you get to feel them, as long as
  5. You are striving to move through them without permitting them to paralyze you, and finally
  6. You never use someone else’s choice to curate their social media sphere as a justification for treating them like crap.

Focus on your positive interactions instead of negative ones – your friends, creating stuff and putting it out into the universe – whether it be art, fic, opinions, a podcast, gifsets, crackposts, whatever – and your social media world will be a better place.

anonymous asked:

Hey Sam, I'm trying to delete my LJ, but when I log in it asks me to accept the new terms of service. When I hit "not now" it automatically logs me out. I'm not really sure what to do here. :( Is there a way to delete without agreeing? Or do I have to bite the bullet and hope deleting afterwards will do the trick?

It depends on what you mean by “do the trick”, I guess.

You have to accept the TOS in order to delete. There’s no way around it. Possibly if you use a posting client like Semagic, which was already logged in, you could go through Semagic’s archive and delete each post by hand. I don’t use Semagic anymore so I don’t know. But basically, yes, you have to accept the TOS in order to delete. You also have to accept it in order to give Dreamwidth access to it to back it up.

But the TOS is only legitimate on Livejournal, so it’s not like you’re making some kind of deal with the government or something. I’m not a lawyer so I can’t speak to whether Russian law is even applicable to non-Russian users in this case, and I also can’t speak to whether the TOS is voided by the deletion of your journal. (I’m assuming you’re not Russian.) I know that when I accepted the TOS in order to be able to log Dreamwidth in for backing up my journal, nothing happened other than I got access to my blog back.

I guess the question is: what are you concerned accepting the TOS will cause to happen? Are you concerned you’ll be put on some kind of registry? The TOS has just been put in place, but a Russian-based company has owned LJ for years – if they were going to put people on a registry for posting stuff against Russia’s censorship rules, it’s already happened. Also, they’re not looking for small fry; this kind of stuff is meant to justify the arrest of people who are agitating against the state or promoting activities the state disagrees with. LJ was formerly (may be still, I don’t keep up) a huge platform for Russian political activists. This is aimed at them, not at fandom. Fandom needs to GTFO of LJ for sure, but fans just being fans, that’s not the target (yet). The idea is to get out before we become one.

Also remember that there are strictures on the TOS itself – most of what is threatened in the legalese only applies if you have more than 3000 hits per day, so the average person probably doesn’t need to worry in the immediate sense (I might, and ohnotheydidnt definitely does, but most people don’t get 3000 hits on their livejournal in a single day).

Should we still be concerned that LJ is doing this? Absolutely. In political terms, in terms of supporting the Russian people who deal with this bullshit all the time, it’s super worrying and upsetting. In personal terms, in terms of our safety as non-Russian users of the site, I don’t think just accepting the TOS is dangerous, as long as you’re getting off the site shortly thereafter.

I guess the TLDR is that you have to accept the TOS in order to delete, but there are thousands of people accepting the TOS right now, and we are small fry compared to the people the TOS is actually designed to target. Once you delete, the TOS realistically doesn’t matter anymore as far as I am aware. (Readers feel free to comment or reblog with more nuanced understanding of this situation; remember not to send asks, since I don’t respond to asks sent in response to other asks.)

So without being an international internet lawyer, my advice is to accept it, go in, back up your journal if you need to, delete it, and then take a deep breath and have a snack. And the next time you read about Russian politics, remember how scared you feel right now and have empathy for people who are struggling to create change there.

caerulaen  asked:

i love your s12 spn meta post, i love how you've analysed things and looked through different angles, but i have to admit. sometimes i feel that us fans of the show think more complexly about the characters and scenes than the writers themselves. they've shown continuity errors and character development mistakes time and time again, and the queerbaiting is frustrating as fuck. it doesn't make sense to me that these people are the same ones orchestrating such fantastic plotlines.

(i ran out of space for that previous ask) but again, i sincerely mean no disrespect to you or to the creators of the show. it was just my two cents. i’m sorry if you find it offensive in any way, i definitely did not mean for it to come off as rude! :(

Hi… I didn’t take it as rude, so you’re fine. :P

(I probably wouldn’t have posted it on anon, though, just because I don’t see the show as being fully of continuity errors and character development mistakes, and “queerbaiting” is in the eye of the beholder and seems a harsh statement to level against a writing staff that is comprised of several LGBT writers. Especially when they have been addressing queer characters and issues in serious ways, and absolutely not making them the punchline of a joke or dismissing them. It’s a word I would not throw around so casually.)

***On second thought, after typing ALL of this out, I feel like having spent the whole morning on it, it should be on my blog… I hope that’s okay.

Half the point of my rewatch (which, oops, I’m behind on because TNT showed a ten episode marathon the morning after a new episode aired, and the new episode had to take priority over the old) is to point out how consistent ALL of these things are.

There’s a post I like very much that I just saw again yesterday:

People should probably learn the difference between “plot holes” and “things I didn’t like” or “things the franchise plans to explain in the future” or “things film makers didn’t think they needed to explicitly explain because they thought you had critical thinking skills”

I didn’t reblog it because it’s already somewhere on my blog from ages ago, but especially relevant to s12, because of the way they’re telling the story.

99% of the time what looks on the surface like a “plot hole” is actually an expansion of canon, and yelling PLOT HOLE! or RETCON! just because something seems different means there’s a reason for the difference now.

Like the fact we’ve seen several shapshifters who don’t shed their skin like puddles of goo and can just *poof* into a new form. We’ve had shifters like this since s6 when we learned about the alphas. Truly powerful shifters don’t need to shed to change form.

(on a practical level, it makes the prop department’s job easier because they don’t have to create goo puddles, but also they’re able to use a shifter’s ability to change instantly as a plot point, and have done so several times very effectively. Like in 12.20 when Ketch was torturing “Mary” and punched her, so the shifter took on HIS form. They couldn’t have done that if they hadn’t introduced this more powerful strain of shifter before.)

Technically, everything that’s happened since 4.01 would fit the strictest definition of plot hole, because it had already been established that angels did not exist. And yet… here were angels.

Cas said in the past that angels were now walking the earth for the first time in two thousand years, so the fact he’d been down here in a vessel in 1901 must be a plot hole too… unless you assume that Cas’s previous statement was both specific and hyperbolic (which really isn’t a stretch, angels have always avoided certain truths in order to manipulate us). Angels as a whole hadn’t embarked on a unified mission to earth in the last 2000 years, but we know that Lily’s first encounter with Ishim in 1901 was because SHE SUMMONED HIM. She performed a magical spell that BROUGHT AN ANGEL TO EARTH. And the events of their relationship unfolded to the point she felt compelled to summon yet another angel (Akobel) to protect her from Ishim. Well, suddenly there’s a whole flight of angels coming to kill her, you know? It’s not the sort of story that any of the angels involved would be cheerfully chirping on about.

Point being, if Lily Sunder was capable of summoning an angel, there’s probably been OTHER people over the course of human history who’d tried it too. All of heaven may not have descended like they did in s4, but here and there, angels very well may have been watching over us.

It’s not a plot hole, it’s an expansion of canon. It refines our understanding and reminds us that we don’t know everything about the entire history of that universe.

I think there’s two kinds of people: Those who see something they think is a “mistake” in canon and scream PLOT HOLE! and get upset about it and think the writers are idiots, and then there are those who see that same thing and wonder how does that fit with the information I already have and then try to understand.

Sometimes a plot hole is just a plot hole (like the time travel nonsense in 12.13 that turns into a strange loop of infinitely decreasing returns), but most of the time it’s really really not.

As for characterization “errors”, most of the time they are incredibly purposeful. Like the whole scene at the beginning of 12.15. People are STILL shouting, “Out of character! Dean hates germs! He would NEVER do that!” and therefore MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT OF THAT SCENE.

Which was SAM standing there staring at Dean THINKING THE EXACT SAME THING.

Dean was putting on the performance FOR SAM. He KNEW Sam was lying to him about where the cases were coming from, and Dean’s not a moron. They visit the MoL, and suddenly a few days later Sam’s got a “magic phone app” that finds cases for him? Yeah, Dean wasn’t about to let Sam keep lying to him, and yet Sam was STILL lying to him even after two weeks of hunting, so he kept upping the Disgusting Quota trying to get Sam to break and confess. Because if he just comes out and asks Sam directly, he continues to lie and give him weak excuses. There’s more to it than that, but that’s the basics right there…

The one characterization thing that actually bugs me was the scene in 9.04 where Sam and Dean are watching Game of Thrones with Charlie, and Jensen and Jared DECIDED TO SWAP LINES because they felt that Sam was the one who would read the books, and not Dean… (Robbie Thompson, who wrote the scene, is still grumpy about it, too). Because DEAN DOES READ. And in this scene HE was the one who was supposed to be mirrored to Charlie through their mutual love of this particular brand of nerdery. It sort of wrecks the entire characterization of the episode, in which Dean’s usual “performing Dean” persona was SUPPOSED to fall down in Charlie’s company, and he would casually and comfortably admit he enjoyed reading the epic fantasy series (which, really, we know Dean reads fantasy novels… he’s a huge effing nerd).

Why do you think in 11.04 (also by Robbie Thompson) he wrote the line about Dean knowing that the phrase “god helps those who helps themselves” was from Aesop and not the bible? Because Jensen COULDN’T JUST HAND THAT LINE TO JARED. He HAD to admit he read. Because Performing Dean is one thing, but when he’s not trying to project that facade, he’s brilliant.

So yeah, 99% of it is 100% intentional. It’s our job as viewers to think about why. You can absolutely watch the show as a passive casual viewer (and the most casual viewer wouldn’t even NOTICE the things that get called plot holes or characterization mistakes), or you can see those things that seem not to make sense on the surface and look for the reason they struck you as being slightly wrong. Because if you dig just a little bit deeper, it opens up an entire new level of understanding about the show.

The writing is NEVER going to hand you all of that deeper characterization on a plate. That would make for TERRIBLE writing. All they want is for the characters and the plots to stick with us, so that we DO turn these issues over in our heads, so we DO think critically about them, and hopefully come to some compelling and fascinating conclusions. Or at the very least we’re eager to tune in again the following week to see if our suspicions are confirmed.

This is a hook that writers have been using since writing was a thing. This is how stories are told. Not just in the words, but in the negative spaces. We’re not just supposed to consume stories, but in the very best way, the best stories also consume US. They make us into an active participant in the narrative, and force us to consider the world and characters on our screens as real people.

That’s how all of this works.

sometimes when i’m out and about downtown or wherever it is at the grocery store or wherever, I see some girls with very obvious ED’s , and believe me, when u have an ed, you KNOW when someone else doesn’t or does have one. You develop “Ed sensors”, i’m not even  joking. even if i see someone particularly thin, i can ..sense if its ED related or not.

i came across a girl at the grocery store recently, she was significantly underweight, like…well..dying level.  she was just constantly looking at the back of the calorie content of everything she was picking up and she looked so panicky and miserable.  I just felt so sorry for her but i didn’t say anything bc it’s not my place to do anything. And i realized maybe all the shit people say about “anti thinspo blogs” on here, and “posting about ur ed too much on tumblr” as a “coping mechanism” ….holds some truth you know. Like the reality of an ed isn’t some pretty thin girl taking a mirror selife and smiling with 5,000 notes. it’s being weak, fragile, not having any energy to do anything, its about compulsively checking calories, crying if you ate too much and isolating yourself completely from the world and all your friends just so you can be alone with your illness, its complete and utter depression and self loathing. It isn’t beautiful. It isn’t some cute outfit on an underweight body being reblogged by thousands of naive teenagers who want to look that way. it doesn’t make you happy.  its being exhausted all the time, not being able to get out of bed. It isn’t looking good in every outfit and putting on nice makeup and showing everyone how adorable and beautiful you look. It’s just…death and nothingness and ugliness. and yeah, a lot of girls on here do glamourize it. a lot of girls do want validation for how “good they look” now that they’ve starved themselves to being under 100 lbs.. everyone had a point with being against eating disorder blogs. Maybe it’s true that you shouldn’t post about your ed in a form of “coping with it “ online by consistently reblogging sickly bodies. that probably just makes your disorder worse looking at images like that. nonetheless, i don’t have anything against girls who do this, i think that they are just as sick as anyone else and in very dire need of professional help and should NOT be made fun of or criticized for their behaviour. anyway that’s all i wanted to say..just something i thought about ever since i saw that girl

sakuraerza1  asked:

I have been following you since I got my Tumblr, and I have noticed the variety of questions you have answered. I don't know if you have already answered this one, but I would like to ask about outlining a series. I'm trying to write a novel series, but I don't know how to have an effective outline for it. I have seen many tutorials on outlining a novel but not a series. Any advise you could give me would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for asking, and thanks for following my blog <3 :)  I do try to answer every question I get in the inbox, either with my own advice or with resources from people with better knowledge.  And I probably need to create a masterpost/FAQ to help people navigate my posts in the future >.<

So I’ve only written one series (technically a trilogy) and it was not of full-length novels, but I did have an outline method that might help you.  I’m a crazy-hard planner so if it’s a bit too thorough for your tastes, you can winnow it down to what suits you:

  1. Start with the first book.  Remember, if you don’t have the first book, you don’t have any books.  Really devote time to creating complex characters, an engaging and in-depth plot, and a solid setting that complements it.  You won’t really be able to outline anything else until this is done – because no matter how well-laid your plans are, the story will turn out different by the time it’s done.  That’s mainly because you’re discovering the characters in that first story, which makes everything tentative.
  2. Once you’re about halfway through, develop the ending.  By halfway through the story, you’ve got a solid cast of characters, a defined plot, and plenty of decisions left to make.  You probably only have a vague idea of how you want the first book to end – so now is the time to stop and plan the ending.  Make sure you’ve got a satisfactory finale that leaves an opening for the next book, but brings the plot to some sort of satisfactory conclusion nonetheless.
  3. Once you’ve got the ending, define the point of your series.  Is it plot-driven or character-driven?  If it’s plot-driven, what is the final point in the plot that you wish to achieve (e.g. the Hunger Games trilogy encompassed Katniss’s enemyship with President Snow)?  If it’s character-driven, how do you want the characters to evolve by the end of the series (e.g. Friends was about six young adult friends figuring out their lives and supporting each other UNTIL they found family, stability, and new support systems)?  This definition will help you to develop everything in between.
  4. Write a loose few paragraphs on what you definitely want in the stories.  Plot twists, character developments, big scenes – put it all in there.  Brainstorm a bit until you have plenty of story fodder, and then play with the order a bit.  Group together things that complement each other or are similar in theme/timing.  If there are holes, take the flexible subplots (e.g. a romance arc) and fit them in there.  It’s basically like going to the grocery store, grabbing 50 ingredients, and then rationing them out to make 5 delicious, whole meals.  Take your ingredients and make 3+ separate, full plots.
  5. Outline each story individually (or at least the next two for now).  This will be where you do the final shifting, getting things in order and seeing if they make good stories.  Some things will fit together and make for a compelling whole project – and from my experience, I’d guess you’ll wind up with a few extra plots/subplots/plot bunnies that don’t find a home.  Do the hard thing and cut them out.  If they don’t fit in any story, and they’re not enough to make their own story, they’re just a necessary casualty.
  6. Adjust as necessary.  As you develop characters and plots, things may change.  You may find that some subplots don’t fit with the theme of a certain book.  You may wind up cutting more and bringing back stuff you previously cut out.  When in this process, make sure you don’t delete any ideas.  Ever.  Anything might make a reappearance.  A series means you have a lot of space to fill with only a basic idea, so anything could be the difference between a bunch of books and a true series.
  7. Don’t get attached to anything especially the ending.  No matter how wonderful you think your ending is, by the time you actually get there, the odds are good that it’ll change completely.  Plans are great, but they’re never followed 100%.  Don’t get so attached to certain ideas that you’ll bend the true story – the best story – into knots trying to keep your favorite ideas in there.

That’s the best I could remember from my time writing a series.  In point #5 I left a link to my outline tag, with different reblogs of outlining techniques for your individual stories.  Outlining is so different for every writer, so I figured that’d be your best bet.

I hope this helps!  This is just my method, and there are thousands of other methods out there.  If you still need help or have other questions, my inbox is always open! :]  Good luck!

If you need advice on general writing or fanfiction, you should maybe ask me!

I feel the need to critically respond to this comment, because wow.

Alright. I don’t even care if they’re trolling or not, this is important. Let’s discuss this comment, because when people say stuff like ^^THIS^^ on that post, (and not many people do, you special snowflake), they have clearly missed the entire point.

I’m not going to explain what the post is. Just click here to see it.

Okay, so, I agree, that IS my way of writing a book, not everyone else’s. The purpose of the post was to show people who write books (and make art, in general), that they are not alone. That if they think the process is tedious and feels like it’s way harder and takes way longer than it should – that it’s like that for everyone who chooses this line of work. It is NOT easy in any way, shape or form (it can be extremely fun and rewarding though, and that’s part of the purpose of creating art, in my eyes. It should fulfill the artist in some way).

Next, what you see in that post is only a couple drafts of the book. I think…three printed drafts. I wrote fourteen drafts of Embassy. 14-3=11. I did 11 drafts on the computer, several of which were completed by beta readers, who also worked strictly on the computer. But I ALWAYS do a couple drafts by hand because it let’s me slow down and truly visualize what I’m doing, and it’s always for the largest edits I’ll do for any book I write. On top of the effectiveness of hand-edits, holding that fat stack of paper and showing it off to people and letting them physically see all the edits you’ve done at a moment’s notice is rewarding in itself. I give speeches at high schools, and I do book signings at Barnes & Noble, and I always bring a paper-edited draft with me, BECAUSE PEOPLE LOVE SEEING THAT SHIT IN PERSON. It makes the process real to them. It’s easy to just do it all on the computer, but when you have that manuscript in your hands and you can SEE the work you put into it, suddenly people realize that, yes, writing a book is not easy.

I did the same thing for the sequel, and I did the same thing for the third book in the series. I’ve been writing for 13 years, and in the last four years alone, I’ve spent nearly 3,000 hours PER YEAR (more time than I sleep) writing and editing books. And guess what? I’m going to do the same thing for every single book I ever write, because, like you said, that’s how *I* write my books.

I made the “Writing a book is so easy” post because it’s relatable to the thousands of other people who have ever written a book/made art/compose music/etc etc. It’s inspiring. It’s motivating. It’s challenging. Look through the comments and tags on reblogs and you’ll see how people have said how excited they are to reach this stage of the writing process, how they can’t wait to hold their books in their hands, how they themselves have gone through this process and thought maybe they were doing it wrong. Others have said it gave them way more respect for artists. Others have straight-up said “Nope. Nope. Nope.” And then others miss the entire point and feel the need to say unnecessary shit, such as what you said, and in one fell swoop, belittle all the time and effort hundreds-of-thousands of artists around the entire planet put into their creations.

You think I don’t know other people have their own ways of writing and editing? You think I don’t edit on the computer? You think your comment matters? It doesn’t, because you made a downright stupid attack on something totally and completely obvious.

The purpose of “Writing a book is so easy” is to give artists everywhere something to relate to, and to give non-artists everywhere a behind-the-scenes look at what part of the process looks like and more appreciation for the work we do. That’s it. That’s the purpose.

To inspire, motivate, and celebrate ARTISTS.

My opinion of popular Korean language learning resources and some tips

Talk to me in Korean: Some of their grammar explanations are very helpful, as well as their Iyagi series. I’d really recommend them for learning elementary~intermediate grammar. However, they use a lot of English and their content often isn’t serious enough (stock full of jokes that are not necessarily related to Korean at all, the hosts constantly teasing each other) and it can be cringe worthy and annoying. Would recommend but not as a prime resource.

Koreanclass101: They have a lot of interesting features where you can actually track your lessons, record your pronunciation, use specific vocab lists for each lesson etc. But again, most of their lessons are filled with idle talking in English and come off as a bit cheesy.

Livemocha: Livemocha is like a free version of Rosetta Stone with more community interaction. After each lesson, you must write from a prompt and record a paragraph which is given to you. It’s really cool that native speakers listen to and judge your pronunciation and correct your entries for free. However, the content is rather limited and doesn’t go to an advanced level (nor is it very practical content). Still, it tracks your progress and covers all aspects (listening-writing-reading-speaking) in every lesson. I’d still recommend if not just to get your pronunciation corrected personally.

Rosetta Stone: I’m not a believer in their products. Not for serious learners who want to reach a high level. No explanations for anything. Assumes adults learn like babies, which they don’t.

Quizlet: This is a website only for vocabulary, but I highly recommend it because you actually have to be able to recall the vocab instead of simply looking at it. Especially like the ‘learn’ tool. It may be a bit tedious to constantly input new terms and doesn’t necessarily help in long-term memory if you don’t put the vocab to use in another way. If anything, it will be tremendous help in practicing Korean typing.

Memrise: This is like Quizlet but with a more ‘scientific’ approach to help with long-term memory of vocabulary words. It keeps track of which words you need to review so you’re not forced to also shift through the words you already know. Their process can be a bit long and tedious for some people though. If you’re impatient, quizlet might be better. But as a whole it is a more structured way to learn vocab and I’d recommend it.

Lang-8: This is one of my favorites because it’s pretty unknown to the western world despite how useful it is. It’s not really a learning website; just a tool where you can write anything in your target languages and native speakers will correct it for you for free. I’ve even had people correct parts of my school assignments on this website. The community there is nice and helpful and there are lots of Koreans willing to correct your entries quickly. Recommended for people who are self-motivated in writing entries. Not particularly helpful for low-level learners. ALSO a lot of native learners writing english posts include the Koreans translation so you can study off of that.

TIPS:

1. There is no reason you should pay to learn Korean on the internet. If millions of free resources are not enough motivation for you and you’re too lazy to study without strict online lessons telling you how to do everything, you might not be motivated enough to learn a language.

2. NEVER use google translate. Naver english dictionary is the best, closely followed by daum.

3. If your motivation for learning Korean is to understand TV shows or music without subtitles, you’re probably underestimating how difficult it is to learn a foreign language. Waiting a week for some subtitles to come out on your favorite drama is exponentially easier than dedicating thousands of tedious hours to your life to learning a language. Language learning should not be fun and it should not be easy. But there’s nothing wrong with having a hobby and exercising your brain.

4. Do not blindly trust Korean language learning tumblr blogs. Especially the ones with very light content that use lots of pretty graphics and have hardly any non-reblogged content. I have seen SO MANY spelling errors, incorrect vocabulary, and tons of other things that are just straight-up wrong and made by people who don’t know what they’re doing.

5. Nothing will stick if you don’t make an effort to use it yourself.

6. Use penpal sites to interact with Koreans in Korea. Chat with people on kakao talk. A lot of nice people will help you learn.

7. Whenever you watch anything with subtitles, take notes on how things were translated. I would recommend you look for Korean subs every time you want to watch a movie in your native language. Also, most TED talks have Korean subs!! Watch some!!

8. There are apps you can download that stream Korean radio. Turn them on while you’re doing something else or when you go to sleep at night. Even if you’re a beginner and can’t understand what is being said, it helps to acclimate yourself to the flow and pronunciation of the language.
