AO3 content (tl;dr AO3 is an archive, not a blogging platform)
As a lot of K-pop fandom is either migrating to Archive of Our Own (AO3) or crossposting to it more and more, the surge in popularity of the site might mean that not everybody is aware of the self-regulation of content posted by site users. The reason I’m posting this is because I’ve been seeing an uptick in AO3 posts from several K-pop fandoms for purposes such as merchandise or photocard trading/selling, roleplay partner adverts/solicitation, and similar.
“'Ephemeral’ applies to the nature of the work–designed to be experienced in a particular time period rather than the creator’s desire to have a permanent record of their reaction, such as can be found on a journaling or blogging service. […]
Ephemeral content is generally meant to be read at a particular time: for example, a message about a particular challenge or a reaction meant to be read while or just after a particular episode airs.“
Basically, it means AO3 isn’t Tumblr or LJ, etc. and shouldn’t be utilised as such, due to point (1). For example, a fic fest can be hosted on AO3, but announcement and information posts on where/when/etc. in addition to soliciting for participation should be done outside of the Archive. Instead, please make use of the Collection/Challenge mechanism, where details as to the purpose of the fest itself can be entered in the description by the moderator. Another example is roleplay (RP) solicitation. There’s nothing wrong with that, but AO3 is not the place nor platform.
For legal purposes AO3 needs to remain strictly non-commerce if it’s to continue in its current state. So even if merchandise trading/selling is official fandom/fanclub-related, it shouldn’t be advertised in any posts.
With regards to charity drives and fic fests:
“The Archive will host fanworks of any origin, including fanworks created in response to charity drives or other challenges. A link to a charity drive to explain the origin of a fanwork is appropriate. Solicitation itself, however, should take place outside the Archive.“
Edit to add: [This] discussion should also clear some things up.
