Idk but to me I felt that the ending for Bleach was when Ichigo lost his powers. It feels right to me... Where would you consider the ending Bleach?
i actually enjoyed the fullbring arc, so i personally would’ve preferred it if bleach ended right after ichigo got his powers back! i really like how it showed us what happens after The Hero’s Journey ends and they return to their ordinary life. it’s like, what’s wendy gonna do after coming back from neverland, u know??
except now, it’s all about how ichigo’s disconnected from his friends and family, how he’s dissatisfied with his human life, how he’s saving up to move out of his house after graduation (his house!! that we know and love!! that was there since the first chapter!!) and i thought it was quite symbolic how every single person in ichigo’s human life turned on him under tsukishima’s mind control - suggesting he doesn’t have a place in the human world anymore. and the ones who rescue him are, of course, shinigami.
in the end, it comes full circle. it’s raining, everything’s gone to shit, ichigo’s just about given up on life. and we finally get to the epilogue of years of powerups and ridiculous ass-pulls, but in a way that i can suspend disbelief because it’s callback, and callbacks make sense.
( not to say the fullbring arc was perfect - after it ended, i was really upset that kubo completely dropped the ball on karin’s development. she was perfectly set up in the beginning to become karakura’s next substitute shinigami, but that never went anywhere. :/
how ironic that Renruki is exactly what IR's were thinking what their fantasy ship would be - bickering best friends, two attractive dorks, strong, years of pining, partners at job, partners at home - and more! yet big parts of fandom doesn't embrace it the same way
yeah, RR always seemed intimate to me in a way that IR lacked. Renji’s confessions and flashbacks about Rukia and the clear romantic undertones there, the way he spoke about her and the ‘gentle aura’ she had when they first met, all of the intimate touches - the moments of him cradling her in his arms and her crying into his chest in the SS arc, her laying her head in his lap in the FB arc, the way they were both blushing after being stripped down in the royal realm, the tension in their eyes while they were facing each other while sparring, and Renji teasing Rukia at her captain’s ceremony?? The fact that they rarely ever separated again once they reunited in the SS arc, and Renji actually thanked Ichigo for bringing them back together in the final arc. And I like that with RR, they bicker sometimes, but it isn’t too much. With IR, it gets to be overkill at times, and there isn’t enough tenderness or underlying feelings there to balance it out. But with RR, they actually get along really well together, too. They’re literally like best friends who are in love. I’ve always loved that moment where Renji holds up the notepad with Rukia’s bunny drawings on it (while Ichigo by comparison makes fun of her drawings and pisses her off), or when they tagteam knocking some sense into Ichigo together (like…they literally slap hands to trade off whose turn it is to hit him lmao). They’re such an old married couple, a classic token duo, a package deal; you’ll rarely find one without the other. And I absolutely love the way they are in the final chapter together, just smiling and unbothered while Ichika is off alone somewhere because they know she can handle herself. I think it really showed the difference in the dynamics and parenting styles of the two couples of IH and RR, and how they’re both so perfect for each other (while Ichigo and Rukia only end up yelling at each other. Again. And for some reason people call that ‘chemistry’ lmao).

But no matter what anyone says about the BlazBlue x Persona 4 Arena x RWBY x UNIB game, I love Persona and BlazBlue and my best friend loves RWBY. I feel like it’s the perfect game for us to connect with each other.
Top 5 (Edit: 10) Ships You’ll Go Down With To The Bitter End!
Tagged by the lovely @gruvia-lolu-nalu-jerza!! SO TERRIBLY SORRY! I didn’t get any notifications for this (T-T) I was scrolling through my activity feed when I saw this! FORGIVE ME! *hugs and cries anime style*
YOSH! So this is not in order cause I love them all so much (maybe the first ship a bit TOO much….ANYWAYS)!!! Don’t bash me if you don’t like any of these ships!
Sorry if I have more then one or two gifs XD
1. Ichigo Kurosaki X Rukia Kuchiki (Bleach)
CAN YOU TELL HOW MUCH I LOVE THEM?! I AM OBSESSED *tries to stay calm* be still heart, be still…
I shipped them (before I even knew the term “otp”) when episode 1 first came out! They just…belong together. Like, I could type a 10 page essay on why they are perfect together; however, I will not do that. They understand each other. They care for each other (a bit TOO much on Ichigo’s part lol although Rukia is getting there). They are literally the KING and QUEEN; DEATHBERRY; WHITE MOON/BLACK SUN.But, the most important thing about this ship is the way the look at each other - at least to me it is. That eye smex tho
In conclusion………IT’S FUCKING CANON SO GTFO HATERS
2. Hitsugaya Toushiro X Karin Kurosaki (Bleach)
Now, I know you guys are probably like “WTF is wrong with you, steph?!” or “Why the hell do you ship them? They never meet in the manga!!” BUT!!! They had TWO episodes that mainly focused on them! I don’t care if they’re filler! Kubo could’ve made those two episodes about other things, like Ichigo and the gang or what goes on in Soul Society other than fighting or even Kannoji! *coughs* anyways…
I think they’re amazing together! They have great chemistry. Plus, I love it when Toushiro protects her from danger! (^3^) I’m just weird like that lolJust look at the HItsuKarin tags and see why I love them!
3. Okita Sougo X Kagura Yato(Gintama)
Honestly, you have to read the manga/watch the anime to understand why this ship is so so SO cute and obvious! You can even read some of the tumblr users posts about their moments!
4. Natsu Dragneel X Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy Tail)
OH.MY.GOD THIS FREAKING SHIP GIVES ME SO MANY FEELS I CAN’T STAND IT BUT I LOVE IT XD They’re SO meant to be and it’s obvious with the moments they had together!! I can’t explain these feelings lo it’s an emotional roller coaster ridel! They just need to kiss and make babies right now!!!!
5. Gray Fullbuster x Juvia Lockser (Fairy Tail)
HNNNNNNNG this ship is AH-MAY-ZING! (yes I know how to spell lol) I just love the development between these two. The reason why I chose gifs of mostly Gray is because of his development in the ship (if that makes sense….? Idk if does but whatever)
IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN 413 DAYS, GO FUCKING WATCH IT RIGHT NOW CAUSE THE WHOLE EPISODE GIVES ME GRUVIA FEELS AHHHHHH
6. Hinata Shoyo X Yachi Hitsuoka (Haikyuu!!)
THERE’S A LOT MORE GIFS BUT TUMBLR IS BEING STUPID RIGHT NOW
THIS ADORABLE SHIP!!! I will seriously go to the ends of the earth with this ship!
7. Kuroo Tetsurou X Kenma Kozume (Haikyuu!!)
OMG WHO WOULDN’T SHIP THESE TWO!?! Like holy shit man! You can easily tell Kuroo cares about him A LOOOT (same goes with Kenma but it’s more obvious with Kuroo maybe it’s just me).
8. Haru Nanase X Rin Matsuoka (Free!!)
I swear they seriously need to make out or more cause they way the look at each other…*whistles* But, seriously watch the anime if you haven’t in order to understand what I am talking about XD
9.Sora X Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)
Shipped these two since Kingdom Hearts I came out lol hardcore shipper for these two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10. Namine x Roxas
love love love love love these two!!! I hope we see more interaction from them in KH3!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I'm going to have to cut myself off from Bleach related stuff because everything's just turned WEIRD. There seems to have been a huge disconnect between what Kubo/WSJ intended to produce and how the fans interpreted the work. Something just didn't mesh; it's like we've been following one template while the creators followed another. I think this is the source of so much angst in the fall-out. Everyone's been talking past each other--for YEARS. Shoulda ended after Aizen's defeat :grumble:
I agree, if Kubo had spent the middle of the Arrancar providing closure for his characters and answering plot related matters, Aizen’s defeat was a great natural end to his story. I must say, though, for all the hate it got, I enjoyed the Fullbring arc. I think it could’ve made a great epilogue to the story, like a super long issue (thought obviously much shorter than the end result) that wraps up with Ichigo regaining his powers through the collaboration of everyone in Soul Society.
It was a perfect, hopeful end: it gave the older generation a chance to atone for their past mistakes by showing their gratitude to Ichigo; it showed that Soul Society had begun to change, that Ichigo’s presence had left its mark upon them; it was open-ended enough that people could’ve pictured Ichigo’s future whichever way they chose.
Previously, we imagined that the espada and their shinigami allies had a speed dating event. Now it is time for a sequel, this time using shinigami! Once again, the initial order has been determined via randomness (as was the choice of shinigami). And once again, everybody will pretend that they don’t already know each other!

Hinamori: Not generally.
Hinamori: Sit in silence for the rest of the date?
hello !! maybe if you haven't gotten too many requests already, a fanfic where ichigo takes orihime out on their first date & things didn't go as plan but orihime still overall loved their first date ? or something along those lines ? idek.
There it was. Her apartment complex was right there in front of him, yet he could not take another step closer. But what was stopping him? He told himself before that this wouldn’t be that bad. What was it? Why was he so fidgety?
He was nervous.
Ichigo stood there fiddling with his collar, mentally cursing at himself for picking such an uncomfortable dress shirt. ‘Just take a deep breath. She’s probably just as nervous as you are,’ he kept repeating to himself in his head. Inhale. Exhale. With his new found courage, he gradually raised his head. ‘Here goes nothing.’
He cautiously started heading up the stairs to room 403. Ichigo didn’t know whether or not to bring flowers. He shrugged it off since first of all, it’s way to early to bring a girl flowers on the first date it was too late to turn back and purchase them. I mean, he was already standing at the front door. Too late for him to turn back.
She was sure her neighbours were getting tired of her reckless behavior. She was causing so much commotion getting ready by tripping over her own two feet and constantly banging her head against the wall, enough for her neighbours to file a complaint. Lucky for Orihime, they could never do such a thing like that, especially to a kind-hearted soul. But still, why was she behaving this way? Simple. It’s because Kurosaki asked her out on a date! It’s understandable! Glancing over at the clock, Orihime sprinted to her closet door and opened it with a nasty powerful force.
“Where are my shoes!- Oh, at a time like this!”
After rummaging around like a maniac, over time she found her flats and scurried to slide them on her feet. While nonchalantly hopping on one leg, she collided into her dresser, falling flat onto her face on the hard wood floor. She slowly raised her head in pain picking herself up while rubbing the back of her neck. ‘Ow, ow, www..’ Catching her eye to the right was a picture of Sora. Mentally cursing at herself, Orihime sighed and picked him up.
“Forgive me, brother…”, she found herself to be blameworthy for her clumsiness. “I’m just…” After a moment of silence, she smiled and gently put Sora back in his place at the top of the dresser. “I’ll be okay. I can do this.”
A soft knock at the door was enough to snap her out of her calm outlook, bringing her back to her usual startled self. Clasping her hands together, a quick silent prayer was sent to Sora’s way. She opened her eyes after and returned a gracious expression to her brother. “Trust me, he’s a good guy…wish me luck..” Scurrying over to the door, Orihime replied with joy present in her voice,
There he was, red as a tomato. Standing there for a while and hearing all the commotion made him a little worried. Her voice which was barely audible passed the closed door relaxed his tense muscles that were forming from his anxiety. Snapping him out of his thoughts was the door that creaked open cautiously. And there she stood. Orihime Inoue, the girl he had a slight crush on for the longest time, yet failed to acknowledge his true feelings for her until after the Blood War had come to an end. AKA, last semester of Senior Year. With the door opened all the way, he saw her beauty. Long strands of caramel brown hair draped elegantly over her shoulders. Her signature plain top and floral skirt, and that sweet smile he’s been craving to see all day.
It’s as if Ichigo forgot that he was nervous for almost a full minute, he gave her a serene smile.
“Yo,” he grinned almost too widely.
“Kurosaki-kun! It’s nice to see you,” Orihime returned her trademark smile that everyone loved. “Sorry for not opening the door right away, I-”
“I heard everything. You need to be more careful.” Ichigo let out a laugh, referring to all the ruckus she made before opening the door.
Orihime blushed at his response. She initially tried to back herself up arguing, “H-h-hey! It wasn’t like I tripped five times trying to open the door for you!” She continued blabbering on as Ichigo was focused on something else. He saw that nightfall was approaching and interrupted Orihime as politely as he could.
“We should go. The bowling place closes in three hours, might as well get a head start since we’re walking there. I’m thinking it would take us about thirty minutes until we arrive.”
Looking up at his tall figure, she threw her hands over her lips and mouthed a silent, “Sorry.” “Nah, you’re fine. You can continue defending yourself on the way there,” he gloated. With that, Orihime mumbled something inaudibly while locking her door. With that, the both of them were on their way to what seemed like a start to a perfect date.
The walk there was nice. Ichigo had thought it would have been awkward since he literally professed his liking in her two weeks ago their affection towards each other was still raw, but Orihime being herself, told many stories during their walk while Ichigo was being the attentive listener. As she was rambling on, Ichigo looked up towards the night sky. He noticed that fresh forms of clouds were appearing and it didn’t look like good news. The wind was picking up as time passed by which made it worse. He could tell it affected Orihime as she slowly stopped speaking, she was way too cold to continue. This led Ichigo to frown.
Her eye caught Ichigo’s scowl and she raised an eyebrow. “What happened, Kurosaki-kun?” ‘Did I do something to him..?’
Quickly, Ichigo denied her bizarre inquiry, “No! No really, you did nothing. I’m sorry. I knew I should have looked at the weather channel beforehand,” he grumbled as he itched the back of his head.
A soft laugh in a matter of seconds escalated quickly into roaring laughter which left Ichigo as confused as ever. It only irritated him as she continued. “Okay. What am I missing here?” His puzzled and annoyed expression snapped her back into reality and calmed her down while giggling here and there. “Sorry… but it’s not your fault. I was the one who suggested bowling, yet you’re blaming yourself! I find that peculiar.” she chuckled, wiping away her tears. “I should have checked to see if bowling would have been appropriate for today, but I didn’t.” Though she was blaming herself, Ichigo couldn’t help but start stifling his own laughter. They both harmonized with their laughs, acknowledging that it was indeed both of their faults.
“Let’s just make the rest of this date count, alright?”
Orihime leaned into Ichigo’s side as they continued walking.
Thank you SO much for being the first one to request this! I had fun writing this, but I do apologize for it not being longer. Being my usual self, I waited till’ last minute to type up my essay for class, so I had to rush this piece!
REQUESTS = OPEN!
Please send in requests for Ichihime! This account only runs based on your guys interaction by sending in lots of requests/drabble ideas to allow me to actually continue writing for this blog! Thank you~
How would you have ended Bleach? Like what would you have wanted to see happen/things answered
like everything in the plot that was left unanswered, especially the Urahara - Yoruichi backstory.
The other thing is the Shiyori ship but tbh a shonen manga like Bleach would never really invest any time to minor ships unless the plot demanded it, so in the last chapter the chances were extremely slim and I wasn’t really expecting anything.
People also ask me, “but don’t you wanna see Shinji’s Bankai?”, to which I have mixed feelings. Kubo treated him like shit… so… i’m quite sure if he bankai’d he would have died on the next page so I was like uh no ty. But if it were up to me, ofc I would have given him an epic fight and probably let him punch Aizen in the face at least once.
Also, I’m sorry and nothing on Orihime but Ichigo and Orihime forced together at the end was incredibly, egregiously bad story writing in my eyes. There was a sore lack in the promotion of mutual character growth in each other, and too much admiration rather than understanding from Orihime’s side to make me believe in their relationship. It felt uncomfortable if not painful for me to watch Orihime pine away at Ichigo the entire series, and even more so when they became the endgame pairing, like I can’t really see any love in it.
Rukia and Ichigo always pulled each other up when the other was down, where as Orihime only viewed Ichigo as the perfect prince and the Hueco Mundo arc consolidated it for me when she had Ichigo’s hollow lose control, and Ichigo went into a depressive spiral. She damages him, and Rukia has to kick his ass into gear. Contrast this with SS arc, when Ichigo becomes truly strong to protect Rukia. Orihime is always idolising Ichigo and wanting to “protect” him, and that’s fair enough but what I’ve seen from Ichigo’s end, what he shows Orihime and the trials and tribulations he’s been through with Orihime is not something deeper or even comparable to what he has gone through with Rukia.
Makes me question how these male shonen jump mangaka want to portray love to their readers, that if one side relentlessly pines for another, then it will be the endgame? I suppose Shonen is not meant to “focus” on love, but that doesn’t mean you can’t NOT write a fucking coherent romance sub plot. Like Kubo my honeybruh if ur gonna write it at all, write it properly and make it good.
TL;DR I’d have preferred Ichiruki.
This is just my opinion though, and I do respect every IchiHime Shipper. I always say this but when people choose to ship what they do, there are personal reasons involved in why they value that relationship and I don’t want to disrespect that.
It’s just that to me, Ichigo and Rukia fitted my definition of a relatable and true relationship a lot more, so it made zero sense that they were not endgame. I took them for granted way too hard!! Hahaha.
What do you like about ichiruki and what do you like about ishihime? So nice to see someone ship those two genuinely and not spiteship...
ohhhhhhhh boy are you sure you’re ready for this spiel, anon
Look, ichiruki are just so fucking HEALTHY. They are so healthy, they are so balanced, they make each other better people, and that epitomises what I think a good relationship should do. They’re the very embodiment of the phrase ‘soul mates’– they’re a little miracle unto themselves, because finding someone who you are THAT compatible with IS a miracle. I think the thing I love most about them is their inevitability; they are the grand sweeping lines of destiny, they are the collision of stars, they are the legends that live on forever in constellations. They’re the inexorable pull of gravity; in whatever universe, whatever story, they are destined. And my heart burns for that kind of fated romance, it really does. They fell into each other and everything around them clicked; they fell into each other and into orbit around each other as if they’d been CREATED that way from the beginning of time.
Ishihime– and I’m not sure if this is just me reading into things, or if Kubo INTENDED these ships to read this way, but– I love for exactly the OPPOSITE reasons. Ishihime I love for how human, how imperfect they are. Ishihime have none of the sweeping grandeur that Ichiruki have; Ishihime is messy and heartbroken and broken. Ishihime isn’t even a thing at the moment because one of them is in love with the wrong person! They didn’t fall into each other; and when they finally DO fall in mutual love, things around them won’t click. Other people won’t settle into orbit around them. When they DO fall in mutual love, it won’t be a supernova, it won’t rattle galaxies– it’ll be quiet, soft, gradual, like rain soaking through a starched white shirt collar. They aren’t perfect for each other; they weren’t made to be soul mates from the start, like Ichigo and Rukia were. Other people didn’t cease to exist for them the moment they entered each other’s lives, the way it was for Ichigo and Rukia. And yet, despite this, despite not having the whole ‘destiny’ buffer, they fought for each other. They fought to know each other, to understand each other. And they do– they really, really do. If Ichigo and Rukia are inevitable, untouchable, not really obtainable in real life but for the rarest of circumstances, I love Ishihime because they’re so human. Because they weren’t made for each other, but they will still fight for each other, still fight to be with each other anyway– the way that most human couples have to do.
I’m gonna finish off with something I said once to Rodella re: ichiruki and ishihime AGES ago and still, I think, rings really true now:
[12:59:01 AM] Sera Lee: bc ichigo and rukia’s fate
[12:59:33 AM] suprememe: this is actually just a very very
ichiruki fic in disguise tbh
[1:00:40 AM] Sera Lee: they’re history in the making,
they’re the grand sweeping line of destiny, they’re the winners who are
destined to be burned into the history books like supernovas. they’re going to
blind generations after them with their radiance and their perfection– not
that they were perfect, mind you, but they were perfect for what needed to be
done, in the right place at the right time
[1:00:50 AM] Sera Lee: but everyone else who wasn’t the hero
of this story?
[1:01:24 AM] Sera Lee: the people who slip between the pages
of the history books? the people who get washed away in the rain like
half-dried ink? the people who get forgotten–
[1:01:31 AM] Sera Lee: and are perhaps, more beautiful for
Am I the only one who didn’t want Ichigo and Rukia shown that they end up getting married and having kids?(if they were canon at the end of course) like just them talking about things and looking deeply at each other and smiling at the end would have been enough for me. Maybe Ichigo or Rukia blushing at a comment the other made to let you know there relationship is becoming something more now that they are never apart.(since Ichigo is living in the Soul Society)That would have been a perfect ending for me at least. And maybe a new Bleach novel in the future where they do get married and want children.(●´∀｀●)
I’m wheezing, I’ve been rolling my eyes at the recent drama re:Bleach and now the new chapter (is it 661, I’m not really keeping up) seems like a perfect counterpoint.
And I see there’s already the counter “”””argument”””” “but friends protect each other as well” floating around. Which, on a pure abstract level, is true. However, when considering the progression of relationships, context is everything.
Here we get a reminder double layer of Ichigo’s consideration for Orihime’s well-being (whic has been a theme since the beginning); mental, asking if she’s okay (which is typical for them, but not so much with Ichigo and other people) and physical, protecting her, as he does. However, the latter is fascinating because it’s a little different from usual, him pulling her away and gently cradling her head. Usually he just tends to stand between her and whatever threat there is, but actual physical contact? Extremely rare, and thus extremely significant.
I understand that Ichihime fans won’t listen to us. I understand they won’t listen to all the fanservice we get, they won’t listen to Kubo’s poems, interviews, tweets, statistics that say how much more popular Ichiruki is. I understand they won’t even listen to Ichigo, or take him into consideration at all. I get it, they really want this ship to happen no matter how much canon says otherwise. They want Orihime to be happy. But why, for the love of god won’t they listen to Orihime herself? Orihime and Rukia are friends. So I don’t see any reason to belittle Rukia or act as if she was some kind of an enemy for Orihime. Second, Orihime acknowledges the special bond Ichigo and Rukia share. She sees it.
Kubo said it, Ichigo said it, Rukia said it. Orihime said it. You can’t go on ignoring this forever. That’s why you look really stupid when you say how Ichigo and Rukia “don’t interact with each other enough” “don’t know each other very well” and “aren’t that important to each other”. Because Orihime, the girl you’re trying to protect sees what you refuse to see, and outright says it. It’s a member of your ship that debunked your argument, not us.
Before I dive into the point of these scans, I’d just point out how she praises Rukia. Kuchiki-san is kind, strong and beautiful. Your perfect princess says how Rukia is kind, not rough and manly, strong, not weak like you imagine her to be, and beautiful, not flat chested, with a body of a little boy or ugly. This is the millionth time somebody comments on Rukia’s good looks and virtues, and this time it’s none other but Orihime herself. Yet you still think you’re so smart for insulting Rukia. The value of those shitty arguments is literally 0.
Now…Yes, this is a very disturbing state Orihime put herself in. But here, she finally confesses to Rangiku and herself about her true feelings: her fears. She sees how superior the Ichiruki bond is, and is scared that she won’t be able to keep up with it. She says everything Kubo was saying in his poems, Ichigo was saying in the manga, and is so obvious without even saying it: Rukia knows Ichigo the best. And she doesn’t just know him, he’s not so hard to figure out. She knows how to handle him. She makes him happy, when he falls she catches him, she shakes him out of his depressed state.
And this is right after one of the favorite Ichihime moments of yours: when Orihime and Ichigo supposedly bond and connect after he promises to protect her.(Not to mention it’s Rukia who “puts the idea in his head” to say the least.) If his promise is really that unique, strong and if protecting Orihime is the most important to him, why does the girl feel this way about it? Why is the only thing she can say about this, that Rukia is the only person who can help Ichigo? She debunked your argument here. Sure, she exaggerates because of her state, but she downright puts half of the manga on the plate for you here. Her reaction to the situation is because she’s depressed, but her observation isn’t. This isn’t the first or last time she makes a comment about their strong relationship, and how she’s no match for that.
And here, she accepts it all. The bond that’s been such a burden to her, that brings her down, she accepts it. Because she loves Ichigo and finally she’s putting him and his well being first. She’s not sad because of Rukia, but thankful. And she’s basically content with her friendship status when it comes to Ichigo. She’s happy she’s his friend, despite not being able to influence him as much as Rukia. This is such a huge step for Orihime. She was never hateful towards them, but she was in agony over their bond, all this time, because she saw what you refuse to see. And she finally accepts it. Why can’t you?
You can argue over the clarity of poems and thoughts. But didn’t you claim that you understand and feel for Orihime so much? Why don’t you listen to what she’s saying them, instead of feeding your illusions? Wanting them to still end up together is fine. But making up arguments that go against the feelings and words of your princess is funny and makes you into the delusional Origos with pitch black shipper goggles on.
I actually got into Bleach because of the anime; one night I was watching TV when I stumbled upon it. I hadn’t even heard of it back then; hadn’t been much into anime at the time. I hadn’t even known there was a manga until I saw a few volumes at the book store weeks later. I literally came into it knowing absolutely nothing.
I was under the impression, as I went back online to begin the anime from the start (as I had come across it while it was barely airing the Soul Society arc), that Ichigo’s love interest was Rukia. I didn’t put much importance on it since it was obvious this isn’t a romantic show, but I did take note of it and allowed it (mistakenly) to overtake my opinions. As time went on, however, I found I didn’t actually like them – at all. As friends, they were fantastic. They had each other’s back, she gave him advice, he changed her perspective, they bonded; it felt like the makings of a life long friendship. But I couldn’t bring myself to see them romantically. I mean, I tried. I tried really hard. The anime so heavily implied them it felt like it was almost a crime not to.
And then Orihime showed up. And I know now that they portrayed her very poorly in the anime, but I still fell in love with her immediately. It was almost like love at first sight; when I saw her I thought, “She’s perfect.” And it was so natural to ship her with Ichigo. Kind of like it came onto me without me even noticing. One day I’m staring at a blank page wondering what to write – what could I possibly be inspired to write for this pair when I can’t even bring myself to wholeheartedly love them? – and the next I’m doodling Orihime and Ichigo’s names in the corner of my notebooks like some lovesick puppy. The deeper I got into the show and the more time they spent together in the anime, the more I adored them. How gentle they were to each other, how Ichigo sometimes looked at Orihime, how genuine her feelings were for him, how he protected her, how deeply they cared for one another. And I swear I’d never shipped anything as hard or as ardently as ichihime; not a single pairing from any work of fiction has ever had my full support like this.
And then when she confessed to him. I was on cloud nine. It was beautiful. I had taken a break from Bleach for a short time and I had come back to that.
But no matter what, the anime was teeming with Ichigo and Rukia. I was surrounded by it. I went off to look at fanart, and they were the dominant pair. I searched for fanfics, and even in the ichihime stories, there were traces of it there, like a ghost hanging over every word. I felt almost guilty for shipping ichihime; I even wrote my earlier ichihime fanfics from back then (which I’ve deleted now) centered around the other pair. I eventually ended up abandoning Bleach for a long time. It was almost years before I went back, and the only reason I did was because, one day, I decided to search (some nervous, gnawing guilt in the pit of my stomach) the ichihime tag. I happened upon a post arguing why ichihime didn’t work (a cross tag, could you imagine that?) and because I had spent so long away from Bleach, and because I had only ever seen the anime, and because I was still doubting myself, it convinced me. I actually thought ichihime would never happen, nor would it ever have a chance; that it never had and that I had been basically a fool to have shipped it (that’s not to say the person who wrote the anti-ichihime essay was directly saying all this; this was only because of my own personal feelings).
Haha, I feel kind of silly for it now, but I almost felt like crying. Maybe I really had loved this ship, and maybe I really had fallen in love with Orihime as a character, and maybe this love had made me delusional; maybe everything I had seen between Ichigo and Orihime was all fabricated by my own selfish wants. I actually felt my heart drop, this sort of sadness fall over me; a sense of reluctant acceptance. And you wanna know why I ship them again? This post. It literally took these few points to get me right back on track. The anti essay took points from all throughout the manga and the anime to argue against it.
I went back to the manga and started off where I left off in the anime, just before the Fullbring arc, and found that it was much less…biased. And even then, I became aware that I had missed out on other ichihime moments from earlier chapters.
I mostly followed these two blogs ( x. x.), because they made good points and they rekindled my love for this ship and eradicated the guilt I felt over it. I eventually decided I’d make a blog devoted to them; I wanted to write stories for them, and the fandom for ichihime was so welcoming I wanted to share the little fics I wrote.
Long story short, I’m really happy to be here.
(haha, I’m pretty sure I’m not even explaining myself correctly. But, really, it would have saved me so much heartbreak if I had just gone directly to the manga than the anime.)
