and i'm just reading what everyone says when they reblogged it

she-shakes-the-pine  asked:

Do you know the real story of Pocahontas ? If you did I'm sure you would want to remove her from every post including her, its ironic and contradicting that you are advocating for women of colour while also promoting colonialism

Okay this message is super patronizing but I’m going to answer it openly and honestly.

Yes, of course we all know the real story of Pocahontas. We’ve talked about it numerous times, reblogged critiques of it and had open discussions with followers about it. Our focus on this blog is looking critically at Disney films while also celebrating the film characters for what they are and the effect they have on people. We’ve also openly stated that the film should remain a one time mistake—that Disney should learn from it, and that they should leave it in the past and not attempt to drag it into the future with the this trend of live action remakes and shows like Once Upon a Time

THAT BEING SAID, I was an NDN girl growing up in the 90s with literally no access to natives in pop culture beyond the toxic portrayals in old westerns and whatever my dad could find in bookstores and video rental stores in a time before the Internet made it possible to find things instantaneously. When Pocahontas came out, I freaked out. I remember my dad freaking out. He took me opening weekend to the theater to see it. He was so excited that, at last, there was a mainstream native american character he could show me. And she was strong and she was brave and she was beautiful and she was resilient. And she meant a lot to me growing up.

But I was also lucky enough to not only have a father that knew his history, but to be surrounded by family on our reservation who were hell bent on my cousins and I learning, from a young age, Indigenous history. And it’s something I continued into my education. I took 6 semesters of Indigenous History courses so I’d say I have a better grasp than most people on the subject.

But that’s why this blog exists–to educate and inform, to highlight both the good and the bad effects of not just Pocahontas, but all the characters of color in Disney’s history. And frankly, if we banished every character because of the way their white creators mishandled them–either through ignorance or indifference–we’d be left with nothing and nobody to talk about.

Russell Means, one of the most prolific and important indigenous civil rights revolutionaries, was an actor in the film. He thought that the overall effects of the film outweighed the historical inaccuracies, as long as those inaccuracies were talked about. He said,

It’s so revolutionary, it shocked me when they showed it to me. The first thing that shocked me was the truth. The Eurocentric males are admitting why they came here–to kill Indians and to rob and pillage. That’s never been done before. This is also the first time, other than on “Northern Exposure,” that a human face has been put on an Indian female. Here’s this young woman who’s wiser than her father or any man in the village, and she causes peace to reign. It’s beautiful. (x)

So do I have conflicting feelings about the film? Absolutely I do. As I’m sure everyone reading this blog does. And we’re never gonna shove the movie down anybody’s throats or yell at them for not watching it. People are allowed to have their own feelings about stuff. And as long as people acknowledge the truth behind the movie and not try to divorce it from the real history, I don’t have a problem with someone loving the movie.

This blog focuses primarily on how pop culture and media representation affects children, for better or worse. And the fact remains that not only is this movie already a step above most Hollywood depictions of Natives in that the Natives are actually played by Natives, but it remains the ONLY source of indigenous representation that is accessible to children. Bluntly, right now, it’s all we’ve got. If you don’t think that has some significance, that’s your opinion.

So we’ll continue to showcase Pocahontas on this blog because to not to would be to erase her from Disney’s legacy–both the good parts and the bad.

I struggled about whether or not to post this, but as a bisexual woman in her 30s with very strong feelings on bullying, I feel I have to.

Yesterday I watched many people from the Mass Effect fandom gang up on someone who made some poorly worded comments about straight love interests that were unintentionally hurtful to bisexuals. From what I can gather, while some users did take the time send politely worded anons or to have proper conversations with this user, it wasn’t many.

The hate I witnessed on that main post was one of the most upsetting things I’ve seen in a while. I watched as vague call out posts appeared and people sent hateful anons to this person. I watched as people reblogged the post to post hate at this person or reply with hateful comments and personal attacks. I watched as the situation would calm down only for yet another person to reblog the post and throw more fuel on the fire. I watched as people stopped reading her posts and just read other people’s replies, reading further and further into her comments. Assuming things she had not said, and things she had not meant to imply.

People are now claiming she said things she did not say; that is unacceptable.

Even as someone who taken aback by what was said, I couldn’t understand why logical adults - people who were just as calm and reasonable as me on any other day of the week - were resorting to mob tactics and posting hate. The personal attacks and nasty insults were awful and constant, sometimes in tags and sometimes in reblogs or comments.

Guys, no matter how angry or hurt you are by something someone has said, it’s never okay to resort to bullying and hate. What I saw yesterday terrified me so much that I didn’t feel safe to say anything on that post. Hate, anger and public humiliation will never change someone’s mind. That is what drives people to self harm and even to suicide. You don’t want that. We are better than that.

I didn’t agree with what this person said, but I listened to what she said and understood it did not represent her own views. I also talked to this person via messager so it was private.

I’m not telling anyone not to be upset or angry, only that sometimes it’s good to walk away for a moment, take some deep breaths, and try to remember that behind every screen is a person. A life. Someone who doesn’t deserve to have a gang of people throwing abuse at them. It’s okay to be hurt and to express that hurt, but personal attacks and comments are never okay.

Everyone is ultimately responsible for their own speech and actions, and hate on this scale is never a good response when someone upsets you - unintentionally or intentionally. That’s all. That’s it. I love you guys very much and I would hate for anyone to be a victim of hate.

@marinashutup just posted about the Laci video and the response to it and made some points my privileged ass didn't see initially, I'm about to rewatch her video with that perspective to see how I feel about it now but it might be worth having a look if you're still interested in the vid (marina tagged that she might delete it later)

I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it. I’m really, really tired of being told on all sides why I need to argue with purple or why I need to try and make people see, why I need to put tonnes of effort into conversations that, unlike Laci, I DON’T get paid for.

I have put in that effort, over and over. The thing about arguing with hatred is that hatred doesn’t feel the need to have a source.

So a guy can just say “men are more likely to be sexually aggressive because we are animals, we are chimpanzees, chimps are like that and it’s natural” I can’t just say “You’re a dingus, read a book” … So I spend hours pouring over reference material, creating citations, dedicating entirely too much time to studying the sexual mating habits of bonobos (territorial orgies, in case you were wondering, they settle their differences with consenting sex in order to tell a dude that he’s being lazy and he’s wrong.

And what is my reward? Because most of the time they don’t listen.

And like, don’t get me wrong, I argue when I want to but it’s NOT usually to change the mind of the people I am debating with, is to spread the information to the people who will reblog me, to arm THEM with the information so THEY know and if they see it come up they might feel more equipped to deal.

So anyone even vaguely implying that I am obligated to do this, that I have to open myself up to “people with different opinions” pisses me off.

My life is FULL of people with “different opinions” and I’m white, so it would be a fuck of a LOT worse if I wasn’t.

Laci is white and thin and successful and this stuff gives her a cushion against the reality that everyone else deals with.

I haven’t watched the video but Marina’s usually very… Smart and insightful and she tends to be pretty generous as a person towards other people, so if it’s pissed HER off then it would probably send me into a rage and I might be tempted to comment on a YouTube video, which NEVER leads me anywhere positive.

Long rant was long.

Minuet, Part II

Part I

Twisting in his grasp, Rose cranes her neck to look at him, finally, and there he is, all furrowed brow and tight mouth and eyes glittering with anger, and god, if she wasn’t so irritated with him right now, she just might kiss him.

“That’s what you were going to do, isn’t it?” she asks instead.

***

Eyes widening, the Doctor only has a moment to let his mouth drop open in surprise before another gentleman steps in—time to change dance partners. Rose slips into position with the newcomer without so much as a blink or even a glance in the Doctor’s direction, never faltering in her rhythm; a quick peek at the Doctor moments later tells her that he has allowed himself to be swept up in the tide of dancers, sidling up to his new partner across the room.

Rose turns away, swirling in her partner’s arms, but she can feel the eyes of the Doctor boring into her. She shivers despite the summer heat.

“That’s beside the point,” he whispers when they meet again, touching palm-to-palm first with one hand, then the other. “I’m a Time Lord.”

“Really? First I’ve heard of it,” Rose replies drily.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, Rose. A very long time. I understand the risks.”

Rose rolls her eyes. “And stupid apes don’t.”

At least the Doctor has the decency to flinch at those words. “That isn’t what I meant.”

“Of course it is,” Rose sighs, and they both step back, granting a berth for other dancers to flit gracefully between them. “After all,” Rose continues when they reconnect, hands clasped, “I’m hardly one of the most accomplished women who ever lived, am I?”

I'm Intersex & bi

… and starting to be proud.

*deep breath* I’m quite nervous about this, but here it goes.

I decided to officially come out as two things that I’ve actually been ashamed of for the longest of time. I’m doing this because I’m finally getting to that point where I can’t just cope with it or accept it, but I’m actually starting to take pride in being who I am (let’s hope it stays that way!). I also hope that this might reach and maybe in a small way help someone like me who isn’t quite there yet.

First of all: I’m intersex. Intersex is a broad term that implies a person is born physically diverting from the gender binary (it is often confused with transgender, since both often struggle with gender-identity). I’m also however, cisgender. Which -yes-, is possible. I’ve always identified as female and was identified as such at birth. My chromosomes however are XY… I’ll try to explain:

No one ever talks about abusive friendships so I'm going to and you better pay attention because this is important

People know all about abusive relationships- how to spot the signs, how to leave, etc. But no one ever talks about abusive friendships, which can be just as damaging and often is. It’s also a more dangerous trap because people don’t even realize that they’re actually being abused by their friends

I’m writing this post based off of my own experiences and what I’ve seen in others’. Feel free to add anything you might find relevant upon reblogging, because you could seriously help someone.

The vast majority of my ‘friendships’ have been abusive to me (as much as I hate to admit that), and it’s a horrible experience that I never want anyone else to live through.

I just want to add the things one should look for so no one else has to deal with the same bullshit I always did:

  • You’d rather be by yourself than hang out with that person (NOT the same feeling as being drained because you’re an introvert- you just really don’t want to hang out with that person specifically)
  • You have to always be on guard and watch what you say because your friend might bitch you out or get irrationally angry
  • He/she/zhe insults you and tries to pass it off as “I’m just saying…” or “I’m just trying to help you”
  • Seeing their name on your caller I.D. puts the fear of God in you because you’re not sure whether they’ll be kind or ready to tear at you for some unknown reason when you pick it up.
  • You’re always there when they have problems, but when it comes down to YOUR problems they brush them off as unimportant, give shitty, half-asses advice (when it’s easy to tell they just don’t care), or turn it around to make it about them and effectively have a “my problems are more important than yours so shut up” moment
  • They insult the things you find joy in (yes, this includes fandoms) but heaven forbid you show any distain for something they like, even if you only respectfully disagree- you MUST like what they like OR ELSE YOU’RE STUPID!
  • They tell other people your secrets or tell other people your worst personality traits and basically talk smack about you. Which prevents others from wanting to be your friend.
  • They ask for your advice/opinion and then get mad when you give it
  • They insult your family for really insignificant reasons or for no reason at all (I’m not even kidding guys. It can get out of hand. I had a friend who constantly insulting my parents and my brother and even said my mother couldn’t cook worth shit. Rude.)
  • Say you are unable to do things because they “know you” and use that as an excuse to say you can’t do something you want to do. “You can’t do that, you’re too short LOL” yeah fuck you too asshole
  • You’re afraid that if you end the friendship they will go into Bitch Mode and tell all your darkest secrets and talk crap about you to everyone.
  • You have reason to believe that their Bitch Face is actually their True Face
  • They can’t seem to find anything to talk about except talking crap about other people and expecting you to agree with them (my 'best friend’ insulted another friend of mine, who I had ASKED OUT ONCE and was quite fond of, and got mad at me when I said anything in her defense.)
  • The previous point leads me to the one where they insult your other friends.
  • THEY ALWAYS TRY TO PIN THEIR PROBLEMS ON YOU EVEN IF YOU HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Usually this happens after they ask for your “advice” and then blame you for everything later or make another problem out of YOUR OPINION.
  • They consistently use the wrong pronouns (if you’re trans*- and this doesn’t include times when they have to use the wrong pronouns because of safety reasons for you) or out you (as LGBTQA+) at inappropriate times, and then get angry when you call them out on it- “but it’s obvious you’re gay anyway, so why does it matter?” “It’s too hard to use the right pronouns! Just deal with it!” (even though they’ve known what the correct pronouns are for MONTHS and after constant reminders)
  • And lastly if something feels off to you or you just feel upset or off-put by your 'friend’ (or GROUP OF FRIENDS in some cases) It’s a toxic friendship and it’s NOT good for you!

If you feel you’re in a toxic friendship, end it. Right now. It may hurt, the other person may throw a hissy fit and try so say YOU’RE the bad friend (you’re not!), you might not want to hurt the person’s feelings (which you shouldn’t worry too much about because they didn’t really care about your feelings, now did they?). Just end it, and don’t look back, even if you’re left completely friendless.

Being friendless is by far much healthier for you than staying with a group of toxic friends who put you down and make you feel like shit. I know that sound convoluted but it’s absolutely true.

And remember that it’s not the end of the world and that you WILL find new friends- hopefully ones who are decent human beings and you’ll have a real friendship waiting for you.

Don’t continue to just live with it. Do something about it and in the long run you will be much happier, trust me. If in reading this list you were heavily reminded of a 'friend’ I’d suggest looking at the friendship again- it’s probably toxic, and not the Brittany Spears kind.

#95- have you ever had a near-death experience? /What happened?
#96- what do I want more than anything else on the planet/in the world/in the universe?
#97- do you put others before yourself, even on bad days?
#98- what, to me, is an angel?
#99- what’s the most passionate thing I’ve ever done?

#100- this is not a question, but rather a statement.
* I want everyone to do me a favor: smile. Find that piece, that glimmer, that twinkle that brings life to you breath. Hold it, love it, don’t let it go. Talk to that person you fell for so long ago… Laugh with them, cry with them. It doesn’t matter, just talk. Get it all off your chest. We all need this.
Eat what you want. Fuck society, everyone is beautiful, shape/color/voice/culture/sexuality/habits/ love and hates included.
Wear something comfortable. Listen to your favorite song until you’re shouting the lyrics at the world because it feels wonderful. Run outside in the night air and jump up and down in your pajamas like a crazy child because we are human and we are beautiful and we deserve the love no one ever gets. Because we are us, and that is more than okay.

Can we also talk about how Bakugou went from "weird haired guy" to "Kirishima. Change of plans". Oh man I didn't realize how much I missed the anime *cries*

BOI CAN’T WE I just spent the whole morning crying over seeing the moment Bakugou recognizes Kirishima as an equal animated nbd at all r i p me - I think this might be the first time Bakugou calls anyone by their name, actually, and I just!!! that’s because Bakugou heard Kirishima’s words and recognized him as a good partner and a worthy hero and someone whom he could respect and I’m gonna be grateful for chapter 133 for the insight on this for the rest of my always I !!!!!! have feelings g a h

Anon said: ok ok ok ok but but listen what about BAKGOU AND OCHAKO they are the most popular couple and the most cutest , i think you should try to draw them once i would love love to see this !!! of course just if you want hehe thanx

Ahhh sorry anon but I really don’t ship that - I mean, it’s true that I ship Bakugou with a bunch of people aside from my main two, but if they’re part of Deku’s group you can fairly assume they’re not between my Bakugou ships? And I only romantically ship Uraraka with Deku, Tsuyu and Iida anyway so! You’re probably not gonna see any romantic baku/ocha from me, sorry o<-<

Anon said: Since we know what Bakugou’s parents are like, what do you think Kirishima’s parents are like?

I have a similar ask somewhere asking about Kaminari’s parents as well, so I guess I’ll answer both here?? As a general rule I don’t really like making headcanons over stuff I’m sure the manga will give me in the future, so I can’t say I’ve thought about this too much - there are a few things I work under the assumption of while drawing, like for example I’m taking for granted they both have at least functional families, considering Aizawa personally visited their homes to ask their guardians about allowing them back to school, and if anything had been weird he would have noticed

I like to think Kaminari got his quirk straight from one of his two parents with no mixing happening, and got the Kaminari surname from them as well, but that’s all I ever allowed myself to settle on as far as Kami’s family goes, everything else changes based on what I need for the current scenario I’m thinking about… I do often end back on him being an only child, though - in the same way depending on how angst or lighthearted I want it to be my ideas for Kirishima’s family change a lot, but generally I think I mostly fall back on the idea of him having a big family? In a scenario like that his parents are kind and love him a lot, but having many children and needing to split their attention on all of them might cause them to overlook him a little (it would explain his obsession with being flashy, for me) then again, who knows? I don’t know how canon you can consider the infos SMASH gives, but in one of the strips Kiri mentions working part-time, and the fact that he doesn’t seem to have problems with money kinda makes me believe he might be independent from his family like that (unless he’s a rich kid, also very entertaining as a possiblity)

I’ve seen a lot of headcanons floating around about both of these guys’ families and possibly being related to villains, that would be cool too, though I’m not sure how much I believe it

I’m sorry this ended up being little to no useful at all lol as I said, I just shift between scenarios a lot - imagine settling on one and growing attached and then having to let it go once Hori proves it wrong, that’d be terrible for me

anonymous asked:

hi so I was wondering if you could tell me the best way to start off writing fics on tumblr? It feels like I'm asking a stupid question but there's just so many blogs on tumblr and I always feel so silly when I post, and end up taking them down, partly because of the fact that having it sit there gets me anxious and partly because I feel like my writing is... crap. Yeah. Help?

I get this question a lot and I never know what good advice to give because I don’t think there’s something you have to do if you want to post your stories online. If you love writing and you want to share your stories with people, you should post them. Don’t doubt yourself and your writing!

  • Notes - Don’t worry about notes at all, especially if you’re just starting out. Notes don’t guarantee quality at all. I’ve read great fics with a lot less notes than they deserve, and I’ve read fics I didn’t really like that got a lot of notes. I know it sucks to post something you’ve worked hard on and not get any feedback on it, but everyone started out that way. It’s a lot easier to start if you already have some followers, or if you’re friends with someone who has a lot of followers, or if someone shouts you out. If not, you will have to start from scratch, but if you like writing, you should focus on that and not the notes. I think I’ve said this before, but when I first started writing Sin City, nobody was reading it. I liked the story that I had in my head and I wanted to write it down, even if there were only a couple of people that gave some sort of feedback on it. You just need to keep posting if you like what you’re posting, and try not to worry about the notes too much. A lack of notes doesn’t mean your stories aren’t good! Maybe people still didn’t get a chance to find out about your blog. Also, there’s a lot of people who follow you and read your stories but never give any type of feedback, and I know for a fact there are people who don’t follow you, but read your fics anyway. And when I first got into BTS, I’d read fics even though I didn’t have a Tumblr, so I couldn’t like or reblog anything. Just keep posting your stories and try not to worry about the notes too much.
  • Tagging - It’s really important to properly tag your stuff. If you’re a fic writer, there’s no need for you to tag a Jungkook story with “Yoongi smut” or “Jimin gif”. Personally, when I’m looking for something specific, I hate seeing stuff that doesn’t belong in that tag because it makes it so much harder for me to find what I’m looking for, and I’m definitely not going to click on a Jungkook smut story if I’m out there looking for a specific Jimin gif. The first five tags are the ones that show up in the search, so those are the most important ones. Tag the genre and the members that are involved.
  • Networks - I don’t know when exactly, but I joined @kwritersnet and it’s  a great network for sharing your stories with people, but also for finding new stories. Since the tags are full of things that don’t belong there, I never go through them. When I look for new stuff to read, I usually scroll through the network tag and I find something new every time. I suggest you try joining that network or a similar one - it’s a good way to meet new people and share your stories with them.
  • Asking other writers to read your stories - I see that a lot of people do this, and I’m conflicted about it. I’ve never felt confident enough to send a story of mine to someone and ask them to read it, but a lot of people have sent me their stories and I didn’t have a problem with that. The thing is, the busier you get, the less time you have for writing, let alone reading. So sometimes, writers won’t really have the time to read your story and you’ll put them in an uncomfortable position if you ask them to read something of yours when they don’t have any free time. I feel horrible when I have to turn people down, especially if I know they read my stories, but I have so many things to do that I can’t even keep up with the fics I’m already reading.
  • Feedback - This might be just me, but I feel like a lot of people on this site expect feedback even though they never actually give it. I’ve had a lot of people message me for the first time saying they love my stories and asking for me to reblog their story or read it or give feedback, which I have no problem with, but I’ve never even seen their urls before which means they never gave any type of feedback to me, whether it be likes, reblogs, asks, messages. I’m not saying you have to give feedback, but if you’re claiming you love someone’s work, why aren’t you giving them any kind of feedback, but expect them to give you some? I feel like some of these messages are just generic messages that get sent to a lot of writers at the same time, and I don’t like being treated like one out of 50 options. Besides, if you’re a writer, you know how much feedback means, even if it’s constructive criticism. If you interact with other writers, you have a better chance of them noticing your stories and checking them out. I’m saying this because I know @noona-la-la-la, for example, found my blog because I reblogged a story of hers and gave feedback in the tags. I found a lot writers that way too since I always check the tags on my stories.
  • If you follow me, you can always send me a link to your story and I’ll add it to my stories to read post :)

Good luck !! :)

The Foxhole Court, Chapter 10 – Your Friendly Neighborhood Shrink

In which we meet Betsy Dobson who appears to be Molly Weasley’s long-lost Ravenclaw sister, some quality Renee time happens, Kevin’s Stoic and Mighty Demeanor has nothing on Dan’s doughnuts, and actual school happens at some point but who gives a shit (spoiler alert: It’s not Neil Josten).

Sounds good? Then it’s time for Nicki to read The Foxhole Court.

I see you reblog a lot of Bungou Stray Dogs stuff. Would you recommend it, could you maybe give a brief explanation of what it's about? It looks interesting, and once my semester's over I'm planning on bingeing a few new shows, so I need to build up a list!

I ABSOLUTELY recommend Bungou Stray Dogs! In general, I don’t reblog anything I *wouldn’t* recommend, but for sure, I think everyone should watch Bungou Stray Dogs.

It’s a little hard to explain though, because I feel like the summary doesn’t accurately convey just how amazing this show is. And I have only watched the anime and read the first volume of the manga, so I feel like there’s actually a whole lot more to the story that I’m only beginning to understand and I might not be the best person to ask for why this show is great. But I can talk at least in general about some of the things that I really liked about the series, and I hope that helps!

First off, I guess the basic summary is that it’s about rival organizations consisting of people who all have superpowers. But I also strongly feel like that summary only conveys a fraction of what is going on in the story, although for the life of me I can’t really summarize it any better than that.

Essentially, this show combines the two great loves of my life: literature and anime. The basic conceit is that every main character has the name of a famous literary author and their supernatural ability is named after one of that author’s major works. I knew that going in and I was very delighted by that fact but it was essentially lost on me until they started introducing the Guild who were all named after American/British/Canadian authors and then my literature-loving heart was ECSTATIC.

I mean, I think there’s just something supremely satisfying about watching a show and thinking, “OF COURSE Nathaniel Hawthorne is a priest! Of course he is! And of course his ability, The Scarlet Letter, would have creepy blood related powers.” And then there are moments when you go, “people ship H P Lovecraft and John Steinbeck?” and think to yourself how strange your life is that you just that thought.

I will say, and I mean this as a sincere compliment, that I feel like it hits a lot of the same notes as a sports anime. And I feel like BSD fans might resent the comparison, but as I am a die hard sports anime fan, I really do mean that as one of the highest compliments I can give.

Like, you know how in sports anime there manages to be this intense, “We will WIN this, for HONOR. To DEFEAT EVIL. To SAVE THE WORLD” kind of feeling to the games sometimes? BSD has that feel too, only, you know, they actually need to “win” in order to defeat evil and save the world.

And then there’s the Pure Cinnamon Roll, too good for this world, who just Tries His Best main character (which, I am a complete sucker for in a main character, let’s be real here, especially when the pure cinnamon roll is also a badass, as they often are).

So on top of that, it also has what sports anime generally does not: really complex world building, plot and character relationships. It also, in my opinion, has the perfect balance between comedic moments and pain. I mean, spoiler alert for the first three episodes, but the first two everything starts off fairly lighthearted, but then by the third episode it’s like, “holy crap, that went to a dark place super fast” but then it never gets *too* dark.

I’m the kind of person where if it’s really too much of endless pain, I have a very, very hard time watching it unless it’s an incredible anime otherwise. (Tokyo Ghoul and Psycho-Pass come to mind as shows that were very hard for me to watch but I was still engaged). BSD, I feel, hits that right balance of– when the action goes down, you have legitimate concerns that maybe the characters might not make it out, but overall (so far, later seasons may prove me wrong) BSD never goes to so dark a place that you feel like your soul is heavier just for the watching.

And that is an incredibly hard balance to achieve! A lot of times, when anime (and tv shows, let’s be honest) shifts from “light” to “dark” it pretty much just settles on “dark and pain” from here on out. BSD does a really good job of touching on painful things while still pulling back and having light moments again, and I really respect that in a story.

There’s like, a million other things I really appreciate about the show, but I think I’ll leave off there. So, thanks for asking anon-friend! I hope this helps! It’s definitely worth checking out!

What are your thoughts on Ouma's prison mode character ending? Thank you again for all your wonderful meta!

Now that I’ve actually had a chance to translate and analyze Ouma’s prison mode ending for myself, I can honestly say it’s probably my favorite bonus mode ending out of any character! There are quite a few bonus mode interactions which are sweet and touching when it comes to characters who get a chance at developing in a way which canon never allows for—and Ouma’s really fits this particular niche perfectly and makes me emotional in quite a few ways.

His prison mode ending is, in my opinion, the perfect counterpart to his FTEs. While his FTEs are certainly fun, and he’s always happy and intrigued when Saihara goes out of his way to interact with him despite him telling Saihara that he’s “going to kill him in [x number of events],” there’s always a certain feeling of distance. He keeps his walls up, in other words, and he never ever allows himself to get too close.

Ouma is a cautious person by nature. He understands better than any of the other characters in ndrv3 how the killing game is a situation in which blind faith and optimism gets you killed, in which even decent people can be pushed to kill depending on circumstances. He doesn’t want to let his guard down completely around anyone, not even Saihara—but he’s clearly sorely tempted to do so, especially when there’s no one else who manages to surprise and impress him so much.

Ack sorry about sending another pitch question (I know you said something about people sending those) but you mentioned you pitched a show twice, and since I'm a creeper, I read the tags and you said the pitch wasn't how we'd think they'd be; how were they, then, out of curiosity? If I ever pitch a show, in your position, what should I expect? What exactly happened? Sorry for asking all these questions; you've been my inspiration for a while and I hope I can pitch my own show someday!! Thank you

Oh no, that’s fine!  I don’t mind telling my experience with it, and I’ve even given pitching tips before, but this post is about the extent of my knowledge.  (You can also just search my blog for “pitch”, ‘cause I’ve reblogged stuff from other people that actually KNOW what they’re talking about, haha)  I just don’t want people under the impression that I’m super experienced with it, or that I’ve ever pitched to a big deal network or producer.  I absolutely haven’t.

I have exactly 2 pitching experiences.  The first one was a few years ago at an event in Nashville called “Film-Com”, which is an annual trade show/expo event for financing and distributing filmmaking projects.  Basically you get a booth, and you set up in this convention center with all these other aspiring creators (filmmakers, documentary people, a few video game/new media folks, all sorts), and they’ve invited a WHOLE SWATH of producers and industry professionals to come mull around the show floor with you so you can make connections and get your product out there EAT FREE MEALS and then idk, maybe fuckin’ walk around a bit and look at your dumb shitty projects if they fuckin’ feel like it but they probably wont, so what ends up happening is all the creators just walk around and look at each others’ shit, which for me—being the only animator there—means that a bunch of other jack-knobs who have some vague idea for a shitty cartoon end up giving me THEIR card so that maybe in the future I can work on THEIR dumbfuck ideas.

ANYWAY, to get to the point, they selected certain projects and scheduled them to actually go up and pitch in front of a whole room full of producers.  This happened over the course of the whole day, so I suspect the reason none of the producers were walking around interacting with people is ‘cause they were stuck in a room all day hearing 30 different suck-ass pitches and when it was all said and done they were probably exhausted.  I was scheduled as the last pitch of the day.  I enter the room and wait patiently; the person before me is running about 10 minutes over their allotted time.  I scan the room… everyone is MISERABLE.  They’re anxious, they’re uninterested, they’re sighing… the main guy who’s sort of monitoring the whole thing is pinching his brow and trying his best to keep up the pretense of politeness in telling the current pitcher to wrap it up.  NONE of these people want to be here anymore.  It seems like everyone’s spent the whole day “warming ‘em up” for me, but now they’re all sweaty and miserable, so I can either go up there and give another mediocre pitch, OR I can go up there and try my goddamn hardest to make them laugh.

I go up on stage, just IMMEDIATELY force myself to get over any fears I have, and I pitch W2H.  I screen a short mock trailer I made (no way I’d force them to sit through that whole fucking thing), and it’s sort of like a fever dream, because I can see all of the life returning to their faces, they’re WAY into it, I’m doing fucking GREAT somehow, despite literally zero experience… and when it was all said and done, it became abundantly clear that even though they all LOVED it, not a single one of them could help me.  None of them were animation producers.  None of them KNEW animation producers.  One guy suggested I go into comics, because “comics get turned into film and tv shows all the time”.  I just had the PERFECT fucking pitch, and I pitched to people who couldn’t fucking help me.  As I was leaving, many of them came up to me and actually thanked me for sending them off for the day on a good note.  There was a big dinner at like, the fucking Governers’ mansion or something that night, and again, some of them were coming up to me and thanking me, wishing me the best and all that.  I guess if nothing else, I learned what I’m capable of.

The second pitch was an ACTUAL disaster.  When I’d first graduated I thought I could pitch W2H to Frederator, ‘cause it seemed like a good fit.  They told me (understandably) that they couldn’t reverse-engineer a show from something I’d already produced, and also that it was inappropriate (despite having a show at the time called “SuperFuckers”, but whatever; language and subject matter are different things).  Later on I got an email from them, saying that someone in their office was familiar with my work, and they invited me to come pitch them something that wasn’t W2H.  They also said that I was free to swing by their office any time, even “just to hang out”, and that if I had any questions “whether it be pitching or where to get the best burgers in Burbank”, to hit them up.  How friendly!  How perfect!  I was JUST about to move out to L.A., so I started working on this idea tentatively called “Gayliens”.  I swung by their office once, you know, just to pop in, like they said; thought I’d make myself known or whatever.  They looked at me like I was nuts.  They still invited me in and we chatted for a bit about the history of early Disney studios, but when they asked why I was there, and I reminded them about the email they’d sent, they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about.  I told them I was working on a pitch for them and that I’d be in touch so we could schedule something.

When I finally finished putting my pitch together, I went in for a meeting with them.  It was just 2 folks, we were in like a board meeting-type room (which I imagine is probably standard).  They made some small talk with me first, which I’m sure was an attempt to loosen us all up a bit and set the mood, but all of their questions really caught me off guard.  (I guess they asked where I was working, and when I told them I didn’t have a studio job, they asked how I was making money, and I’m sure it wasn’t meant to put me in an awkward position, but people asking me how I make money literally ALWAYS puts me in an awkward position, because my income sources are scattered and weird.  Try explaining how youtube ad revenue works to your social services worker, it’s a blast.)

SO okay, I let myself get tripped up a bit.  I go on with the pitch; they don’t really want me to pitch the concept, they just have me show them my storyboards and read through the whole thing.  They’re DEAD silent the whole time.  I can’t get a read on them at all.  When it’s over, they ask me some more questions that trip me up.  Some of them are 100% my fault; they asked for a title, and I wasn’t ready to say “Oh, it’s tentatively called GAYLIENS,” out loud to people who I couldn’t get a read from.

It’s all kind of a blur, but the few topics of discussion I remember them bringing up were that “the storyboards look almost TOO good”, like it was TOO polished or well-developed (which is sort of a backhanded compliment I guess???), because see, “when they made Adventure Time… blah blah blah it just started off as this loose idea, and once they were a season or so into it, they started expanding on the universe and developing the characters a little bit more…” — AS IF ANYONE doesn’t understand why AT got so popular???  You don’t have to TELL ME, I WAS WATCHING IT, I FUCKING KNOW.  No one gave a shit about AT until they got Rebecca Sugar and all these talented writers working on it a couple seasons in, and doing all this character-heavy shit.  I tried to present them with something that had all that character shit baked into it already, ‘cause I knew they were gonna’ use AT as an example.  But it seemed like they’re not looking for something that’s already developed with it’s own voice or sensibility, they’re looking for a vague idea that they can mold into something as they go.

They also told me–and I still can’t get over this–that they’re looking for “”””””characters that people will want to cosplay as””””””, which is funny to me for a plethora of reasons; namely that they have no way of knowing that PEOPLE DO COSPLAY AS MY CHARACTERS, but also that I spent half of my time in college working on ridiculous magical girl Adventure Time crossover group cosplays (don’t fuckin’ laugh) like trust me I’m ALARMINGLY familiar with cosplay, and ALSO, that looking for a new property with the guidelines that it should be “the next big thing that some fucking nerds will dress up as at comic con” just seems like such an out-of-touch-but-trying-to-be-hip, capitalize-on your-fandom-doing-all-the-legwork-for-you, fucking executive thing to say.  I know I sound like a whiny art school kid saying that but my animation instructor was so anti-establishment, and I carry a lot of that with me still, and something about that statement–insignificant as it may be–kind of epitomizes how I feel about the industry?  It’s a hard thing to explain.

I walked out of that pitch with my mind feeling like TV static.  My friends were waiting for me next door at a bakery and they were super excited, asking me how it went, and I was just like “I mean… BAD, for sure, but I don’t know where to even start.”  Hahaha.  I don’t know.  It just seems like everyone wants to play gatekeeper I guess.  They want This Thing™, but it can’t be too This Thing™.  They want the thing to have A Fandom™, but they don’t really understand fandom ‘cause they don’t participate in fandom.  They want Your Idea™ but they want to make it Their Idea™.  I don’t know.  I’m just angry and bitter and that’s my experience with pitching.  Admittedly some of what went wrong in these pitches was my fault, or there were circumstances beyond my control, and regardless of how that pitch went, I don’t actually dislike Frederator (I’m on their youtube network), and Fred Seibert has actually done a ton of iconic shit.

I don’t think I’ve ever AIRED MY GRIEVANCES in such great detail before, but there you have it.  If you want some tips on pitching, you can check out the links I provided at the beginning of the post; there’s tons of people out there who actually know their shit too, and they’d probably give more proactive advice.  I don’t know if this helps at all, but hopefully you can glean something from it!  That’s just my limited experience with it.  Haha.  Good luck!

hi! i’m certain that i once read a batman comic about a younger batman done in a very unique style - it was a one shot. the story went that bruce thought he was invincible, alfred bets a dollar that he’s not and says everyone has a weakness, bruce goes out, gets beat up really badly because he freezes when he sees the same scenario where he lost his parents happen , alfred arrives, picks him up, collects his dollar. do you have any idea what this is? i think it’s called the butler did it?

This one? Legends of the Dark Knight #1 (2012)

I'm really just trying to understand why you would reblog the obituary of the Charleston Nine and a couple posts later talk about how much you want to help him. Are you fucking serious? Why don't you just go and dance on their graves? Have you no conscious? You and your little boyfriend are wastes of human flesh, wish they would inject you too. You're vile.

Im just going to reply to your arrogant ass to make everyone else that sends me shit like this understand something….

I have met and talked to most of the victims families along with one survivor, my friend and I were even invited to last weeks bible study by Rev. Manning. Im not sure what obituary you’re talking about but if its this picture…

Im going to have to say that this was given to me by someone at Emanuel, last Wednesday after Bible Study.

I also want to add that I have never said I wanted to “help my little boyfriend” which makes me think you read the fake jail manifesto and thought it was real, so you come here to attack me for something that is false. I have never showed an attraction for Dylann. I have this blog because I’m following the case and I simply like updating others, aside from the fact that I am very interested in True Crime.

I do not believe in the death penalty and I do not want Dylann Roof to die, but that doesn’t mean I want them to set him free.

Lastly I want to say some of the things victims family members have said to Dylann… Cynthia Hurd’s sister in law offered to go visit him in jail and pray for and with him, many have told him they pray for him daily including Felicia Sander’s one of the victims, and lastly a few did say they did not want him to get the death penalty one being Susie Jackson’s grand daughter.

So to sum everything up, at the end of the day you are worse than all of us, because you just wished death upon someone who has done nothing to you. I have respect for those who were killed that night, and trust me when I say anyone who attends Emanuel would be horrified if they saw the things you said about us.

You are the only vile one here.

You know, I'm really disappointed in you. I've followed you since last summer because I know you are one of the original OG shippers and now you are reblogging a post that makes fun of shippers? It would, in a way, make sense to make fun of shippers if Tom starts dating someone else publicly or if Taylor reappears in the U.S. But until that time, I think it's just being hateful to make fun of this possibility.

Ok, you’re allowed to be disappointed. Sure, why not.

Listen, you chose to get upset over a post in my blog and now you extend that upset to me and for what: getting triggered by something in the Internet.

When that happens to me I usually log off and go offline for the rest of the day. It usually helps me to see things in perspective and how they really are. Trivial issues and different opinions aren’t worth getting upset for. We can discuss opinions instead of feeling bad about them. Choose your battles, choose what is worth getting upset about, choose what’s worth standing for. It’s your choice.

I can tell you what I think about the people who are still shipping hiddleswift: I’m ok with them. I have absolutely no problem if someone wants to cling into something while there’s no evidence what so ever to back any of it in any way. It’s like the people who think the earth is flat. I have no problem with them unless they come to my blog and say that if I think the earth is round their feelings are hurt. Their view on the issue just doesn’t make sense to me.

I think that no evidence backs the idea of them being together, thus I think there’s no reason in clinging into the idea of them being together or even entertain the idea. If you have followed me as long as you say you should know that I tend to base my opinions on information, evidence and logical conclusions rather than what I hope for or would like to be true.

I believe based on what I’ve read on Tom’s interviews and what he has said on record about the relationship (which is btw something he didn’t have to do but he chose to) that it was intense and it was real but it wasn’t meant to be for reasons that aren’t our concern. He has stated very clearly that he is single.

To me that speaks volumes about the situation. He wouldn’t deny a relationship if there was one. Tom wouldn’t say something like that on record, he just isn’t that kind of person. I believe him.

There isn’t a conspiracy. They’re not hiding anything. There just is no relationship anymore.

If I see a post where someone makes fun of people who still cling into something that’s ancient history, I might chuckle if it’s well said. I even might reblog if it’s really good one. I can do that even though it’s something I haven’t done before.

I think it’s time for everyone to move on the issue. I’m not going to bash anyone who doesn’t share my opinion but if I see post about it that’s a good one I’m reblogging it. If you don’t like it, then scroll past it or unfollow me. You decide.
