and i was lost without you

By the third minute of silence from the Great Hall’s stage, nearly everyone’s attention has wandered. There are few still watching the eleven year old get Sorted. His cousins watch with mild interest, and many of the students who had been near Hatstalls themselves stay quiet out of solidarity.

But no one is watching as intently as Jamie Potter. Sitting at the front of the Gryffindor table with all of his fingers crossed and half a mind to shoot some sort of Confudus Charm at the hat currently on his brother’s head, he appears to have lost his mind a little bit. Lucy, behind him at the Ravenclaw table, leans forward and taps his shoulder. “Calm down, you look like you’re trying to curse him.”

Without taking his eyes from the scene at the front of the room - Al’s Sorting, of all things! - James answers, “I’m just worried.”

“We’re all worried. Just let it happen. You staring like that won’t make him any more Gryffindor.”

“Or Ravenclaw,” James answers. “Or Hufflepuff.”

It’s not that James is prejudiced. His best friend Fred, who also happens to be his cousin, is a Slytherin. There isn’t any doubt in James’ mind that Lil will be Sorted there in two years. Hell, the Sorting Hat had even asked him if he was sure.

It was just that Al was so…vulnerable. So open to suggestion, so raw about his name, so prone to resentment. James worried what would become of a Slytherin Albus; how he might be shaped towards these predilections rather than away from them, taught to tune into his grudges rather than to turn his focus from them; what he might learn

His heart sinks when the hat finally yells, “SLYTHERIN” into the waiting Great Hall. Albus smiles nervously, sets the hat down behind him, and glances over at James for reassurance. James grins widely, the way he imagines their mother might if she’d been sitting there, but it feels forced and hollow.

Over at the Slytherin table, a wash of green and silver stands to welcome their newest member, Fred looking the most enthusiastic, like he’d promised James, his Uncle Harry, and his Aunt Andromeda that he would be.

James sighs. Slytherin it is. He’ll just have to work harder than he thought to protect his brother. No matter. He always will.

May I recommend Swim by Jacks Mannequin as a post tartarus percy song? (or post titan war, i feel like people forget that as a source of trauma for the poor kid) P.S. thx for being a source of bi pjo content, it does my soul good

Oh god this poor boy just let him rest!!!

You gotta swim
For wars without cause
Swim for these lost politicians
Who don’t see their greed is a flaw
The currents will pull us
Away from our love
Just keep your head above
I found a tidal wave
Begging to tear down the door
Memories like bullets
They fired at me from a gun
Cracking me open now
I swim to brighter days
In spite of the absence of sun
Choking on salt water
I’m not giving in
I’m not giving in
You gotta swim
Swim in the dark
There’s an ocean to drift in
Feel the tide shifting away from this war
Yeah you gotta swim
Don’t let yourself sink
Just follow the horizon
I promise you it’s not as far as you think

Have another Reylo song

Since Red (band) brings out a new album (Love their music), I heard through the songs again and there is actually a song, that reminds me of Reylo; more of Kylo Ren perspective but still

“Yours Again” lyrics:

I can almost feel you breathing
Like a whisper in my ear
I remember how you lost me
Or how I lost you
I stare into the blackness
It’s staring back at me
Why did I try to live without you
I want you, I need you
Open up my eyes I need your light again
Burning me inside I need your love again
I can feel our hearts collide
I can feel our hearts ignite
Open up my eyes
I’m yours again
Will I wake up from this moment
Will I see you slip away
Or is this a new beginning
Of beauty and rage
Where did I lose my passion
When did I start to fade
Without you my world is darkness
I won’t let go again
Open up my eyes I need your light again
Burning me inside I need your love again
I can feel our hearts collide
I can feel our hearts ignite
Open up my eyes
I’m yours again I’m yours again, I’m yours again
I’m never letting go, I’m never letting go, I’m never letting go
I’m yours again, I’m yours again, I’m yours again
Open up my eyes I need your light again
Burning me inside I need your love again
I can feel our hearts collide
I can feel our hearts ignite
Open up my eyes I’m yours again

Dear Girlfriend

Dear Girlfriend,
I know we are going through a rough patch right now but just know my love for you hasn’t changed a bit and I’m not going anywhere. We’ll get through it princess. But hey, you are truly my rock and I’d be lost without you. You’ve taught me how to love myself by loving me and honestly I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you for that. You’re my best friend that keeps me together when I’m falling apart. Babygirl you do so much for me that nobody has ever even thought about doing for me and it’s the best thing in the world. You’re the best thing in the world, you’re my world and I love you more than I can put into words. Thank you for putting up with me 💞

Do you have any headcannons about Emmett and Jasper? What they like to do together? What they argue about? I feel like Emmett would argue over silly things like who loves their wife more but Jasper actually gets super defensive and agitated at Emmett's goofiness!

I’m so happy for these two that they have each other! Emmett needed someone to just relax and get his energy out with, you know? Edward was usually happy to oblige, but he never liked getting dirty or really letting loose, and he usually lost interest in the games and sparring too quickly for Emmett’s liking.

Jasper, meanwhile, never really got to have a childhood (in my HC anyway).  It means so much to him to be able to fully relax and play around for hours without a care in the world.  I think he does have a more serious, closer bond with Edward, and Peter has an irreplaceable spot in his heart, but Emmett is his *brother*.  It’s not just the fun; it’s the understanding when there’s an Accident, and the silent agreement to switch off the human act sometimes when it gets a little old.  They’re also the type of husbands who cheerfully let their wives run the show, so they have that in common too, which helps when their bro-plans get interrupted.

Their relationship is one that we actually got several peeks into in the books, which is great. They like to make up complicated board games together, kill enemies together, wrestle and spar for hours on end, joke around, and make bets complete with graveyard humor.  It’s just so stinking adorable and the family needs that element so much.  It takes the edge off everyone’s angst, and I think Esme’s mother-heart gets full to bursting when she sees the mischief starting up between these two. They make her feel like a mom with a full house more than anyone else.

I don’t imagine these two ever having a serious problem with each other.  For one thing, Emmett was used to having to side with Rosalie against Edward, while Jasper rarely gets on Rosalie’s bad side in the first place.  Also, Jasper’s gift helps him take Emmett’s jokes with a grain of salt.  But Emmett’s jokes do cross the line sometimes, and Jasper lets him know it.  Somewhere after New Moon Emmett started making wisecracks about Alice and her stint in the asylum, and Alice just laughed it off.  But Jasper could feel her insecurity and thus put a stop to it real fast.  Since he rarely puts his foot down like that, Emmett actually shut up and blissfully went back to making fun of Edward’s Suicide By Sparkling.

AniFem Behind the Curtain: Discussing Made in Abyss

One of the things we like to bring up at Anime Feminist is that feminism isn’t a hivemind - it’s a group of individuals striving toward a set of progressive ideals. Debate isn’t just expected, it’s healthy! So we thought it was worth showcasing an example: @joseinextdoor and @vraik, both fans of Made in Abyss, tend to disagree on the show’s handling of Riko. This is a snippet of their ongoing conversation.

Spoilers for Episode 10

Vrai I’m sorry but I think I disagree with you about Riko in MiA. Yeah she’s not the combatant character, but her mental fortitude is off the damn charts and Reg is absolutely lost without her guidance/determination and I adore her

I LOVE Riko so much. I admire her; I’m just endlessly leery of the way she’s treated

The Arm Scene, say, is REALLY INTENSE for maybe….half of it? and I appreciate that. But then Nanachi shows up FIVE MINUTES after this very lingering, intense suffering thing

I feel where you’re coming from, I do. I totally get it. I don’t need her to be an action hero, I just want her to not ALWAYS be the one bad things happen to

(framing framing framing, framing issues all the time forever)

See about the way The Arm Scene is framed - temporarily it’s from Riko’s POV but mostly it’s about how Reg perceives her suffering - and she’s conveniently no longer making noise or the focus once Nanachi shows up for Reg to talk to. ….And it’s Riko’s inexperienced advice that causes her own suffering in a roundabout way

I thought the point was more to do what the last episode did but in reverse - now Reg is without Riko and he’s utterly lost. She has to gasp instructions at him around a mouthful of blood just to get him to do anything, for heaven’s sake

I mean yeah, sure! But then Riko doesn’t get better and save the day for him like Reg did.

Reg’s taking a nap and will be fine when he’s out. Riko’s life and suffering is on the line in both cases, even when she’s protecting herself

Riko’s journey is physical; Reg’s is emotional. She’s coming to terms with her own mortality; he’s trying to figure out his identity. So it makes sense that her struggles are going to be more body-oriented and his more feelings-oriented (like this week’s breakdown).

And sure that falls into gendered tropes a bit, but it’s also that he’s a robot and she’s a human. I don’t think it’s so simple as “girl must suffer & be saved,” especially given the presence of Ozen & Lyza [two women who are depicted as physically powerful and capable fighters].

I’m not saying it’s perfect by any means, I’m just saying I find the journey fascinating & worthwhile & am not ready to condemn the narrative when we’re still relatively early in that journey

I’m in it til the end, and I like the show a lot, I do! I just can’t unsee the way it fits into the whole “cute girls suffering” subgenre. It might do all those things in an interesting way that are justified by the themes, and I’ll follow it. No way am I in danger of dropping the show. Just…y'know. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Making Riko’s body an object early on made me suspicious as we move into forefronting her suffering instead. We’re not seeing her naked anymore, but we’re consuming a different exploited element. It doesn’t totally derail the powerful elements, and I see the physical vs emotional arc thing, but it’s there and it bugs me.

Heh, maybe I’ve just seen such blatant and gratuitous cute-girls-suffering stories that MiA’s brutality seems restrained in comparison ^^; At the very least it feels like it’s serving an actual thematic purpose instead of just being pain porn

It’s definitely a cut above a lot of the genre. it just definitely shades INTO it.

U are honestly so brave like I can't say that we are not haraam without feeling guilty

Like, my sexuality is a great part of who I am, but my relationship with God always came first for me, you see.
I was really, well, conflicted about how I felt, by I never really lost faith, because there was no way that the God that I believed in, would condone such hate like homophobia.

Sometimes I still get these urges to contact you.
It feels like pure desperation…  Like my skin is crawling and my eyes are burning and I just want you back in my life so badly….
And I don’t know why? Where these sudden urges come from?
Why do I still do this, even after all this time?!
It’s like I'm getting out, I'm almost clear…. and then suddenly I feel like I would do absolutely anything just to have you back in my life again.
Even for a single moment…. Just to see you, talk to you - ANYTHING!
It’s like I don’t WANT to be out, I still want to be in love with you because in my mind, loving you equates to happiness and I just want that back… just for one second.
But I have to remind myself it’s not healthy.
Loving you is not like it used to be - it's not real anymore.
It’s not happy, it’s not positive…. and it’s gone and I can’t go back.
All I can do is put the phone down, blink back the tears … and keep moving forward.

I. I miss you, and it’s not like I miss your face, arms, or lips. I could do without, but simply your presence always reminded me of home, and I swear I lost that when you left. You don’t know, I’ve never felt so homeless and alone. No amount of money or possessions even compare to you. I wish you knew but
II. You know people always text their lovers in the morning, so I bet its weird that I’m texting you in the middle of the day, drunk at three in the afternoon. Don’t judge me, but I swear this whiskey tastes like you and this empty bottle is like our love. I have practically consumed what was left of it, and there is nothing left to do but throw it at you. But we both know all the shattered pieces will hurt only me anyway. Just please, open your arms, open your heart. Please don’t leave now because
III. I hate you, hate everything about you. I can’t stand you anymore. but I love you, and I can’t breathe, please, please, answer me, I can’t
IV. It’s been two weeks and these 336 hours and 14 minutes have been hell. You used to shimmer like a piece of heaven, but you’ve gone and I’m fallen. And I’ve been trying to be poetic, but poetry won’t bring you back to me. Spilling my heart out isn’t helping, so what do I do now, what do I do without
V. Hey, how have you been?

Taking textbook notes is a chore. It’s tedious and boring and sometimes challenging, but hopefully these tips will help you improve your skill and shorten the time it takes you to do textbook notes!

Give yourself time: Realistically, you can’t knock out 30 pages of notes in 20 minutes. Take your time with textbook notes so they’re a good studying tool in the future. The general rule is to take how many pages you have to do and multiply it by 5: that’s how many minutes it’ll take you to do the notes.

  • Also, divide you notes up into manageable chunks to increase your productivity. I am personally a huge fan of using pomodoro timers, and I adjust the intervals for however long I need to.

Skim before you start taking notes: If time is an issue, don’t read your 40 page in depth before even picking up a pen, but make sure you know what you’re reading about by skimming a bit ahead of your notes. Read over section titles, and look at charts, maps, or graphs. Writing and highlighting as you read the chapter for the first time isn’t effective because you don’t know if a sentence will be important or not, so make sure you’re reading a paragraph or section in advance before writing.

Use the format they give you in the book to help take your notes: In a lot of textbooks, there will be a mini outline before the chapter itself that shows all the headings and subheadings. Those will be your guidelines! I find this super helpful because long chapters can be daunting to go into without any structure. If you don’t have one of those, use the headings and subheadings provided for you. If you haven’t already been doing this, it will help you so much.

Read actively: It’s so easy to “read” a textbook without digesting any information, but that is the last thing you want to do. Not only does it make taking notes a million times harder, but you’ll be lost in class discussions because you didn’t understand the reading. To keep from passively reading, highlight, underline, star any important information in the book itself.

  • Have a color coding system for highlighting or underlining and write down a key somewhere (here’s a few that you can adjust for your needs: x,x)
  • Use sticky notes or tabs to mark any questions or important points to come back to

Summarize important information and paraphrase: When taking the actual notes, don’t copy down full sentences word for word. Not only does writing full sentences waste a lot of time, it’s not an effective way to learn. If you can paraphrase the information, then you understand it. It’s also easier to study notes which are in your own words instead of textbook academia writing.

Be selective: You shouldn’t be writing down every fact that comes up in your textbook. If a fact ties into the bigger topic and provides evidence, then it’s probably something to keep, but you don’t need every piece of supplemental information (but do make sure you always write down the vocab). Learn your teacher’s testing style to help you decide what to write down. Could this be on the quiz/test? If the answer is yes, make sure you write it down.

Learn to abbreviate: Just like writing full sentences, writing out full words will waste time. Implement some shortenings (make sure to use ones that you’ll understand later!) into your notes. Some common ones are: b/c=because, gov=government, w/o=without, and here’s a great list of a ton of examples of abbreviations and shortenings.

Answer margin and review questions: A lot of textbooks have margin questions on every page or so that sum up what’s really important about that information. Make sure not to skip them because they’re really helpful for understanding. Write them down and answer them clearly in your notes. Most textbooks also have review questions after the chapter that check for reading comprehension, so make sure to answer those because they’ll show you if you really understood the chapter.

Don’t skip over visual sources: Maps, diagrams, illustrations, charts, and any other visuals in textbooks are so helpful. If you’re a visual learner, these things will be so essential to you and how you understand what you’re reading. Charts, tables, and diagrams sometimes also summarize information, so if you’re a visual learner it might benefit you to copy those down instead of writing it out.

  • Add visuals if it’ll help you: As said above, copying down charts, tables, illustrations, or diagrams can be super helpful for visual learners. They’re clear and concise, so pay attention to them.

Write your notes in a way that’s effective and makes sense to you: Mindmaps, Cornell notes, or plain outline notes are all really good forms of notetaking. Find which one works best for you to understand them and which one is most effective for your class, and use it (stuff on mindmaps and cornell notes).

Combine your class and textbook notes: If you rewrite your class notes, add in information you think is relevant from your textbook notes. Mark anything both your book and teacher said were important–you don’t want to forget any of that. If you don’t rewrite class notes, then put stars next to anything repeated.
