and i think the casting is awesome

It was lovely having my brother involved because I got to hang out with him in South Africa for a while. When you grow up and you become adults and you start having kids and all that stuff, you don’t get to see as much of each other as you’d like. So it was really cool hanging with him for like three months and getting to see loads of him. (x)

“Dom and I, we’ve become such good friends, so we were definitely both like, ‘This is a little bit weird,’” I wasn’t nervous for me, Katherine, doing the scene, I was nervous about making sure it was done right. I really think that’s what it is. I was like, 'Great, I get to make out with this beautiful woman and she’s awesome.’ But genuinely, I really wanted the scene to be done well because of how important it is to these two characters, so that was where my nerves came in. I was like, 'I don’t want to fuck this up.’“

How To Stop Doubting Yourself: Aka Being a Confident Witch

This is something I see and even experience all the time. Tell me if this sounds familiar; You’re scrolling through tumblr, and come across this wand that someone hand made.. It’s beautiful, carved and engraved, with intricate copper wire wrappings and even a perfect, seamlessly attached quartz point to top it off. You make googly eyes at it, then look over at your wand, a meager oak stick you found in your yard and painted crude symbols on. Your heart breaks a little and you think to yourself, “Maybe if my wand looked like that I’d be a better/awesome/powerful/____ witch”

If the above scenario brings back memories full of tears and angst, then this post is for you. I present; Five Ways To Stop Doubting Yourself and Your Practice.  Read on witches!

  1. GET OFF TUMBLR
    1. Yes it’s an awesome resource with tons of knowledge and a great way to connect and share ideas. It’s also a great way to waste time, distract yourself, and make yourself feel bad all at once. Stop looking up aesthetic posts and pictures of other peoples altars.
  2. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t.
    1. If you keep thinking about everything you can’t do (I can’t cast this spell, I can’t make this charm), you’re going to limit and hold yourself back. Focus instead on what you ARE able to do. Don’t look for a spell online or in a book, and be torn down when you don’t have that 5000 year old rare herb and the 323rd hair from a camels thigh. Instead, think about what you do have, and how you can use that to make your spell work!
    2. Also side note that you cana literally subsitute just about any ingredient in a spell or charm for something else. So just because you don’t have rose hips doesn’t mean you can’t cast that love spell. It just means you should use rose petals or even rosemary instead.
  3. Start forming you own craft!
    1. So often we get discouraged because we find a path that we think will suit us, and we start to go down in, only to discover that parts of it just don’t click. You don’t believe in this tenet, you don’t feel right when you use this method. Instead, figure out what you are comfortable with, what you do like, and what you’re capable/willing to do, and build a practice that is unique and entirely your own! Not only will this benefit you, but if you ever get the point where you’re comfortable sharing it, then it’s going to be you that others are sighing, trying to learn from, instead of vice versa!
  4. Stop Thinking You Aren’t Good Enough
    1. There is no rule book to being a witch. There’s no code of conduct for practicing witchcraft. There’s absolutely no standard, and there’s no bar that you have to meet. If you practice, study, experiment, dip your toes in, or even just side eye witchcraft curiously, you can call yourself a witch. That’s all there is to it. And you’re doing a great job at it.
  5. Don’t forget that witchcraft is 110% customizable
    1. You don’t have to believe in a certain idea, or practice a specific form, or use herbs, or work with spirits, or use animal parts, or do divination. You can make it whatever you want and that’s awesome because no one else practices the way you do. Your witchcraft is entirely unique to you and that’s FUCKING SWEET

My Thoughts on Why the Hetalia Fandom is Failing

A lot of people, including myself before have claimed that this fandom is ‘dying’. My opinion has changed since joining tumblr.  I don’t think that things are that bad just yet because people are still very much in the fandom.

The problem is that we aren’t very active. This is what I’ve noticed so far.

1)      The Popular Blogs Aren’t Active: To have and keep your fans, you need to make consistent material, rather than posting occasionally. It’s what makes people excited and inspires them to create their own content. Even if it’s just one post a day, it’s still really important to post (if you can, of course), as it maintains people’s interest. Especially when you have such a large platform of followers!

Don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing Hetalia blogs that post several times everyday, and I’m always looking for new ones to follow!

2)      Not All Fanart Is Equal: Another thing about our fandom is that new artists aren’t given a chance to thrive. There are amazing new artists out there, but people only reblog the work from the popular blogs. Why not all?  If you see great content, reblog it regardless of how much attention that blog has received.

3)      Reblog Reblog Reblog: Reblog everything, friends. The more you reblog, the more people see content and want to get into it. Simple!

 4)      Fanfiction: The fanfiction community hardly has any responses nowadays, in comparison to what it used to be. Fanfic authors spend hours of their spare time for free to create stories for you to read and enjoy. It’s so important to follow, favourite, and review. Most of the time, authors reach out and post material to connect with their audience (as is with artists too). If there aren’t any responses, then they aren’t going to bother posting.  Good Fics have gotten a lot of people through some tough times, so I would hate to see that part of the community die out.

If you have an account, support the stories you read. It makes no sense not to, and any comment, no matter how short, means the world to them. It doesn’t take you nearly as much time to support a story as it does to create one. Don’t be lazy if you’re a reader – the stories aren’t going to create themselves, they need encouragement and praise to continue :)

5)      SUPPORT ALL CONTENT: All art, stories, head canons, RPG’s, RPs, and anything else in this crazy fandom needs to be supported. If you love the fandom and want it to thrive, support is your greatest tool to make it happen.

I know some people are going to think I’m being melodramatic by writing this. Or perhaps I care too much. Still, I think the Hetalia fandom deserves better. Sure, there’s some really freaky content, but we’re a bunch of history nerds and weirdos anyways, so whatever, as long as you’re not being offensive.

This is the one fandom that I haven’t ever gotten bored with. The concept of countries being personified is just so ripe with creativity and potential. There is so much you can do with the large list of cast members, i.e. the mecca of ships and AUs. We’ve created a ton of content thus far, so why stop now?

We’re a community, so don’t you think we should start acting like it by becoming active again and supporting each other? The fact that we trended last week makes this even more possible!

Hasta la Pasta, let’s make Hetalia awesome again!

Reblog if you agree :)

rachelhanke  asked:

Hey Charlie! First off, I adore your art. It gives me all the feels. Secondly, since you're primarily a self taught artist I'm wondering if you have any resources you strongly recommend for someone hoping to someday have a similar job to yours in concept art? If you've already answered this question just let me know and I'll comb through your blog to find it!

ESSAY IMPENDING.

I think, along with resources, I’d always recommend having a good idea of what ‘area’ you want to work in too. My job is kind of a strange one (in that it’s an house job but we’re not producing the games or films or actual products.) We are a step in the production line. I get to be part of sweet projects, but also I get to be part of many… I’m not locked into whatever a studio might be making for 2 or 3 years etc. My fingers are in a lotta pies.

The reason I say that is because a lot of people coming into concept will likely need more skills than I have. I am 95% a 2D artist. I work with 3D but very rarely, and not enough to know the inns and outs. I like 2D… and I consider illustration to be the sweetest spot of all the work I do, so I’m quite happy with that balance (and I’m an old fucking curmudgeon and I don’t wanna learn no 3D.)

If you went for a traditional role in a games studio, it will probably be more expected for you to be fluent in 3D. Not always of course! But it’s likely another good skillset to have. Purely 2D (just art focused) roles are not something that I see as often as mutiltasking roles. Which makes a lot of sense. 2D art is often mostly needed at the beginning of a project, and briefly at the end. In my seven years at Atomhawk I’ve seen a lot of people in other studios laid off, and a lot of studios go under. So, multitasking roles mean people will always have something to do.

APOLOGIES. I’M SOUNDING A LITTLE DOOM AND GLOOM. Great jobs exists! People will always make cool stuff!

I’m very much a jack of all trades and my job demands a lot of different things: characters / turn arounds / outfit designs / expression sheets / illustration / marketing art / pitch art / but it’s all primarly focused around characters. So. If characters are what you want - look into that! I would say that when it comes to apply for / getting work etc, we always love to see range. If someone isn’t showing me all the process behind their work it’s likely the first thing I’m going to ask for when it comes to an interview. I think if you have shiny work (on a freelance basis) a client would have enough confidence in the end result. But for a production role like mine, I wanna see that stuff.

Rough sketches through to shiny polished work. The whole lot. I want it all. I want to see people’s thinking! I’m rambling.

First of all: be able to draw well. Know your characters. Know your figures. Know your anatomy enough to make it convincing and be able to twist it when you need to. We get a lot of people who apply, who, quite simply (don’t hate me) are not good enough yet. We have people who work in tons of different styles and methods but at the heart of it, they can draw well.

DESIGN. Mother of god. Design. Drawing well is the first step, but you also have to have that creative flair to be able to come up with ideas and be able to sell them convincingly. Drawing the thing is only half the battle. No one wants a beautifully rendered character wearing the most impractical / boring outfit you’ve ever seen (just an example). Thinking logically about design is something I’ve seen underestimated many times over the years. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s more important than someones drawing abilities. When it comes down to it, drawing is just the tool to represent the design.

Resources wise: the internet is your oyster! Cast a wide net. Create the kind of work you want to do but also push yourself. I think the results are usually better when artists find an area they’re good in and the push the boundaries of that. Better than trying to be a jack of every single trade possible. Don’t have an awesome portfolio full of character work and then think ‘oh, wait, this is just characters, maybe I should stick a fucking car in there too?’ YOU KNOW? Do what you do - and do it well.

Briefly just a few of the things that helped me most: any massive black videos you can find. Mostly for process. Jason Chan’s videos easily had the most impact for me, both in learning how to improve my process and painting the kind of characters I wanted to. Micheal Hampton and Mike Mattesi (force) for anatomy and energy in poses. Your peers! Your favourite artists in the industry at the moment! The places and people you will learn the most from are always so very individual.

Shit that was long. Good luck!

PS. It’s also my humble opinion that you should never take all of your advice from just one person - just take the pieces that click for you :)

Three SERIOUSLY UNDERRATED Movies I just watched recently:

1. Strange Magic

A work by freaking Lucasfilm/George Lucas himself!

Did not expect it to be a musical, very much cringe worthy—but once you look past that, this movie has stunningly beautiful animation!

Not to mention the plot is actually kind of interesting. THIS coming from the same man who brought us STAR WARS and we know how well those relationships work out half of the time *cough* Anidala *cough*—but it is a movie ENTIRELY about LOVE! I kid you not.

Though a few places are indeed very very much a cringe, other parts have me squealing like a fangirl! I wish I would have heard about it sooner!

2. Epic

So I guess 2013-2014 were just the years to have stunning visual animation for forest-related characters, in movies that both basically flop in the box office.

Epic was a little slow at times, but it was funny, unique, and had a few very memorable characters!

I will not lie to you, I am a sucker for ships, and Ronin and Queen Tara never cease to make my heart ache for a whole week after I watch this movie. T_T If you watch for nothing else, at least enjoy the beautiful visuals, A-list voice acting cast, and the FRICKING relationship between the Queen and the most badass guy in this whole movie!

3. Book of Life

So, aside from slamming me with the crippling nostalgia of watching El Tigre on Nickelodeon as a kid, this movie is witty, gorgeous, and (again unfortunately) more of a musical than I typically look for.

STILL! I cannot believe it took me THIS long to watch it! It was fun, exciting, and busted all sorts of chops for various people and stereotypes.

Plus, the fandom for this movie is ridiculously awesome! Jorge R. Gutierrez is very open with the fans with his info/rumors of sequels, and the voice cast nearly killed me. Channing Tatum was one thing, but DIEGO LUNA is the main character!  We’re talking Cassian Andor with more than 5 lines of dialogue and a leading role! ❤ ❤ ❤

And let me tell you about La Muerte and Xibalba—the OTP I didn’t know existed or that I needed in my life—their personalities are so different from what I was expecting and I love everything this movie did to make me think vs what I saw.

Plus it is produced by Guillermo Del Toro—I’ve been seeing his name so much recently—seriously, what does this guy not do!?

So those are the 3. This is just my opinions of things based on recent exposure to the films, and they aren’t the best movies I’ve ever seen by far, but they were enough to be exciting and they definitely deserve more love than they were given! —or at least more exposure so it didn’t take me this long to watch…

some stuff that I love/think is neat in The Wizard of Oz book, that was left out of the movie/almost every re-make

Don’t get me wrong, I really like the 1939 movie cause it’s colorful and pretty, the songs are awesome, and it’s a hollywood classic. However, these are just some things that I loved in the book, but everyone ignores since they weren’t in the 1939 version.

Dorothy:

In the book she’s a very little girl, around 8-10, and I always liked that, and I’ll always see her as a little girl. Judy Garland was a really good Dorothy, but she was still a teenager. I know it was made over 70 years ago but I still think they should have cast Shirley Temple like they were planning.

The witches:

In the original book, The good witch of the north, and Glinda the good with of the south, are two different characters. The witch of the north is the one who gives Dorothy the silver slippers, and all she knows is that they’re magic. It’s Glinda who comes in at the end and tells Dorothy she can use them to get home. It makes a whole lot more sense than Glinda knowing what they can do the whole time.(Also I really like Wicked and want to see it live eventually, but in my mind it’s basically it’s own thing)

Nick Chopper:

The tin woodsman has a backstory! A really good one that ties in with the rest of the story. He used to be a regular man named Nick Chopper and he was engaged to a munchkin girl, but the lady who the girl worked for didn’t want her to get married. So she made a deal with the witch of the east and she enchanted his axe. His axe ended up cutting off each of his limbs but he was helped out by Ku-Klip the tinsmith and he kept replacing his limbs. Eventually the axe cut off everything and he became the tin woodsman. He was so upset that he didn’t have a heart anymore that he felt like he couldn’t love his fiancee without one.

His backstory is really cool and (won’t apologize for the pun) heartbreaking. It’s lame to me that it’s never really used, and it’s a shame because it gives him motivation to want a heart again.

The Kalidahs:

These are super horrifying beasts that live in the Kalidah forest, and they litteraly kill and eat anything they can. I see people adding in a lot of beasts and characters into Oz to make it more scary and grown up, and I don’t see why you’d do that but leave these guys out. The run in with them is how we learn that The Cowardly Lion has courage, because he crosses a log bridge to get away from them even though he’s scared.

The Emerald City isn’t made of Emerald:

Okay so this is way easier to do in a book or black and white comic than it is to do in a movie or tv show. But, in the book before anyone can see inside the city, they need to put on green glasses so the brightness of the emeralds won’t “hurt their eyes”. Then at the end when we find out about the Wizard, they take the glasses off and they(and the audience) learns that like the Wizard, the whole city is a sham. It’s not made of emerald, it’s all just white and plain. That part of the book had a really great lesson to /litteraly/ not look at the world through rose colored glasses. It’s probably one of my favorite things that get left out.

Ozma and Dorothy are gay as hell:

Lookit these lesbians. Bein lesbian… Ozma(a cannon trans girl btw) doesn’t come into the picture until later books, and it takes a few years for Dorothy to come back to Oz but lookit these 1900s gays in these official illustrations.

Oh, and Dorothy and the gang get rescued from the poppy field by a gang of field mice this is their queen:

Anyway, I do like the movie, and I love the Muppets version since they got a lot from the books. I just wish there was an adaptation that used the cannon stuff that’s neat instead of trying waaaayyyy hard to not be the 1939 movie. But it seems like the adaptations are just adaptations of the movie and don’t take anything from the books. Cause L Frank Baum wrote 14 of them with trolls, wheelers, frankenstein monsters, princesses, endless deserts where if any part of you touches it you turn to sand, more witches, sky fairies, and most importantly lesbian princess girlfriends!

30 Days of #Multitwewy is a 30 day prompt project in which you are called to create fanart of any kind (fanfiction and fanart) mixing TWEWY - The World Ends With You (DS) with a popular video game. Starting date: June 24th, 2017.

For the next 30 days create fanart using a daily prompt. Do anything you want with the prompt. Have the TWEWY characters dressed as or interact with the characters of the prompt. Have them fight bosses or using items and equipment of other famous game series. Draw the TWEWY cast in the art style of other games. Seriously, anything your mind can think of and put on paper. If you miss a day, it’s ok, there is no strictness sticking with the particular day and prompt. If you want to mix the days and prompts, great! Just make something awesome!

I tried to include a variety of games and genres and I hope you like them. Sorry if something you love is not in the list.

All fanart should include TWEWY mixed with any game given in the prompts and not contain nsfw or gore (I know you can make Slent Hll and Resident Evil fanart without violence or gore and blood). Do not forget to tag your posts with #multitwewy & #twewy & #thegameyoumixitwith. Reblog and share this everywhere. Seriously, share this everywhere, we need as many people participating as possible, think of all the amazing fanart this can bring.

I think one of my favorite things about the BBC Merlin fandom (next to our amazing resilience) is our loyalty to the cast. Like… it’s been years since that show ended, and a lot of us still follow the actors’ careers, support their projects, etc. and that’s just really awesome to me.
Even if the actor in question played a minor character or a not-favorite character, I ALWAYS see primarily Merlin blogs posting about/creating content for their projects since Merlin ended.

jaredpadaleckiPreface: I’m going to try my best to avoid Bonnie Tyler references… ANYWAY, we don’t get the “total” eclipse here in Vancouver, so I brought my special eclipse goggles! This is awesome! Just to think, every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all my years had gone by…. #totaleclipseoftheheart#CouldntHelpMyself #TriedMyBest

MUNY newsies

(just a collection and babble of happy thoughts abt newsies at the MUNY!!!!)
-I have to admit I wasn’t really looking forwards to another white dude as jack kelly (like cast actors of color! blease!) but jay armstrong johnson killed it and was very very very sweet and humble and lovely at the stage door.
-also he’s a dancer so we got dancer jack along with the other newsies which was AWESOME

-more Bowery Beauties! who had their own little jingle!
-tessa grady? phenomenal phenomenal phenomenal and rocked those kath outfits? yeah

-at “even though we ain’t got hats or badges” one of the ensemble newsies looked at his hat like ???? ok Kelly
-in Watch What Happens kath was in a rolly chair and she rolled away when she did that happy squeak it was cute !!!

-KING OF NEW YORK!!!! THE ENERGY!!!! god it was phenomenal and kath’s tap skills and… AHH. katherine was more incorporated in this one and tapped along with them and it was PHENOMENALLLL. probably my favorite dance number.
-again. daniel quadrino = best crutchie ever. his voice… his acting… god
-at one point an ensemble newsie reached up to adjust his cap but there was no cap there. me too bud.
-BROOKLYN’S HERE!!!! I SCREAMED!!!! THE BROOKLYN NEWSIES RAN OUT INTO & THROUGH THE AUDIENCE SINGING THEIR HEARTS OUT AND BEIN ALL TOUGH!!! OHHH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!! THE BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST. I will remember that for the rest of my life.

-ALSO!!!! mixed in with the newsies at this point were actual KIDS as newsies singing their hearts out to this key change. they had actual people as old as the newsies in the ensemble for this part to make it more gut-wrenchingly beautiful. god.
-all the kidsies also had names (for example: Flounder)
-it ended so powerfully and well. gosh. gosh gosh gosh. it was phenomenal. I could feel it in my heart.
SORRY THAT THIS WAS SO LONG BUT YEAH IT WAS REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY AMAZING!!!! 💙💙💙💙💙

You wanna talk about a good show? Let's talk about Dance Academy.

It’s an Australian teen-centric show that’s on Netflix. It’s also the most true to life and honest show I’ve seen. Throughout it, it addresses issues such as body issues, eating disorders, rape/consent, underage alcohol consumption, being prepared for sex, relationships, cheating, sexuality crises, family expectations, family issues, religious obligation, cancer, injuries, death of friends and the subsequent grief, and so much more. I went into watching this program thinking it would be a shallow, average teenage program about dancing, but it’s so much more than that. I have learnt so much and I encourage you to watch it if you haven’t, it’s awesome! (Plus the cast is really hot)

You know what show is fucking amazing and like no one apparently knows about it?

Extreme Ghostbusters

It was the 90′s sequel series to The Real Ghostbusters, the animated series in the 80′s following the movie. Egon is the only Buster still bustin’ (with Janine of course) and teaches Paranormal 101 at the local college, and recruits his 4 students as the new team.

And look at these fucking characters:

From right to left bc Egon’s in the way:

Roland

Black dude, crazy book smart especially about engineering and science, looks after his troublesome little bro a lot, super nice guy, really charitable

Eduardo

Hispanic dude, street slick and known for being kind of a jerk & slacker but is actually a sweetie, brother is a cop and there’s a whole conflict explored there, is totally in love with:

Kylie

Goth chick, cool and witty and all about that occult ghosty shit, full of trauma (including a Real GB experience with the Grundel), was mostly raised by her great grandmother (now deceased) after her parents divorced, lives alone now with her cat, kinda has a crush on Egon

Garrett

Disabled dude - wheelchair bound since birth, comic relief, athlete, claustrophobic, wants to have a son and teach him how to use a wheelchair, fell in love with a moleperson

So not only does this program have a beautifully diverse cast, they also address major issues like racism, antisemitism, peer pressure, ableism, feminism, some classism, greed, etc etc etc. (admittedly some critiques are presented as jokes, particularly the ableist stuff)

But like this show was exciting, had interesting animation, is so totally 90′s, kept the GB train rolling, and had all these awesome unique characters and episodes that we are looking for in media? and it’s for kids so extra good on that??

All episodes are on Youtube, seriously I think people should watch and love and spread

(also the theme song rocks)

(oh also there’s a two-part arc with all the Real Ghostbusters there too)

The Last of Us - Fan Cast

So I’ve been asked this question a lot, especially lately and I just figured I would throw something together quickly. I’m not great at this stuff, but I will share what I think.

Joel: Hugh Jackman – I thought Hugh would be a perfect cast before they made Logan and Logan just reaffirmed he would be great for it. Honorable Mentions: Josh Brolin, Dylan McDermott, Gerard Butler & Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Ellie: Unknown – I’d like to see an unknown actress get cast in this role to be honest with you.

Marlene: Sonequa Martin-Green – From the first moment I saw her on The Walking Dead, I thought she would be perfect.

Bill: W. Earl Brown – I think he’d be a nice cast.

Tommy: Andrew Lincoln – I think he’d be awesome in the role.

Henry: Michael B Jordan – I’d like to see him in the role. As far as Sam, I’d like to see a newcomer cast in that role as well.

Tess: Cobie Smulders – When I saw her in Jack Reacher I thought she’d make a decent Tess.

David: Gary Oldman – Gary is an awesome actor and I think he could play this creepy role well.
