and i adored the novel

“Not only are there no happy endings…There aren’t even any endings.”

Every time I read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, I find more things to adore about this novel. I read it this time while traveling across the United States, and I have to say, something about reading this book in transit just makes sense. It makes even more sense reading it while soaring over America itself, gazing down on fields and hills, a New Jersey import who lives in Chicago, went to LA a week or so ago, and just left Florida. There is something so intensely American about this novel, and it wows me every time. From the smaller mythic chapters telling folk tales and stories of the people who brought their gods to America, to the gods themselves and their characters, this novel always gets me. This was my third time reading this novel, and I’m going to dig deep to highlight new things that I had forgotten, so solid warning: Spoilers ahead.

I will never get over the way that Neil Gaiman melds together the idea of the gods and the land, and gives them both their own power and will. Something that wows me that I often forget about the standalone is now astoundingly diverse it is without being appropriative, and how Gaiman incorporates so many cultures, a diverse range of characters, as well as a huge amount of humor without it becoming problematic. I think this novel could be a guidebook for authors who want to know how to write diverse stories and mythos respectfully. I forgot about so many fantastic characters that Gaiman pours himself into, from Samantha Black Crow to side characters that brim with energy and character themselves, like Whiskey Jack’s son or Bilquis. I also never noticed before the two mentions of Mr. Nancy’s son that point to Anansi Boys. Not to mention the wealth of research and knowledge that goes into the bottomless well of background characters and visions leading up to the battle.

One thing I gained a new appreciation for in this novel was the character of Shadow. He is big, and not dumb, and I remembered all that, but what I forgot is how nice he is. Shadow’s such a cinnamon roll of a character, and I forget that. He stands up for a waitress and believes in the good of people. At the Lakeside library book sale, he tries to find the book that’s least likely to be purchased, so that he can help the library out by buying it. He performs coin tricks for children. He is obligated to hold Odin’s vigil, but he never questions whether he should also hold Mad Sweeney’s. As Laura speaks with the cutting, too-open words of the already-dead, Shadow still refuses to tell her about her appearance or to not hold her hand, because he doesn’t want to hurt her still. When Shadow picks up bodies with the coroners, he carries them always in his arms.

The scene between Shadow and Odin before his death is one of my absolute favorites (other favorite scenes include Samantha Black Crow’s protest kiss, the scene in which Shadow thinks snow into being, and Shadow’s long death scene). Odin recites to Shadow what he knows—the charms, in a long list. And it ends with that long scene where Shadow wonders what would have happened if he touched Odin’s hand, and wishes he had. And Odin’s twisting grift of the fiddle is so complicated and well done that even on the third re-read, I find myself forgetting about it until the moment Odin dies, and doubting myself on it until the moment Shadow says it out loud.

@neil-gaiman’s American Gods just gets better every time I read it, and I am cautiously thrilled and excited for the show coming out later this spring.

Okay so you know the way Draco is written in some fics as being a lovable weirdo? Kind of an oddball? Kind of an odd egg? Can u pls do a reclist for this particular brand of Draco n I'll love u forever xxxxxxx

YESSSS. ODDBALL!DRACO IS MY FAVORITE EVERYTHING. Look, I have a serious thing for this particular characterization of Draco. In fic, Draco is often the elegant suave flirt. But not oddball!Draco. I don’t know if you all know what I mean by that, but it’s like… he’s pointy, he’s a bit odd, maybe even eccentric, VERY endearing (like cinnamon roll precious), slightly awkward. And he completely owns my heart. Here you have my faves ft. him. ♥

Stately Homes of Wiltshire by waspabi (57k)
Malfoy Manor has mould, dry rot and an infestation of unusually historical poltergeists. Harry Potter is on the case.
(Everything I love about the oddball!Draco trope is right here in this fic. He’s so precious, awkward, adorably proud of his muggle knowledge, he’s kind to old people, and he researches ridiculous things. This has wonderful writing too!)

The Way Down by lettered (65k)
Harry is overwhelmed by his own power and fame and angst, so he’s become a hermit. Draco Malfoy is tired of the melodrama.
(This Draco is a sweetheart, he’s got social anxiety and he tries so hard, it doesn’t always work out for him but he means so well. I feel for him, this amazingly sweet dork who’ll drink hot chocolate with a straw and can go on about Pygmy Puff classifications for ages. I love this fic so much.)

Only For The Lucky by SunseticMonster (63k)
Things seem to be going well for Draco Malfoy after the war. He’s working as a professor at Hogwarts and makes the papers all the time for his charitable contribution to Muggle causes. But when Malfoy is rushed into St Mungos hospital for a psychotic break, Healer Potter realizes that Malfoy’s success is not all what it seems and sometimes luck can have more than one meaning.
(Oh wow, I could write a novel about why I adore Draco in this. There’s his supreme cuteness, his social anxiety that tugs at my heartstrings, his fascination with electrical plugs, all of it. So many new headcanons.)

Here’s The Pencil, Make It Work by ignatiustrout (49k)
Harry thinks “Why is Malfoy working in a coffee shop in muggle London?” is a much simpler question than, “Are you going to accept that auror offer and, if you don’t, what will you do?”
(Is this the creator of oddball!Draco, because I think it might be? He quotes muggle movies, makes dramatic impressions, sings Christmas carols, and Harry thinks he’s barking mad but also completely irresistible.)

Clear as Mud by scoradh (9.9k)
One could be said to have stretched the term ‘friends’ rather far.
(Aaagh, this fic hurts so good and yet. Draco sulked for an hour after Harry removed the mushrooms growing in the stairwell of his run-down house. He’s a total oddball and has all these quirks and Harry is so so in love.)

The Guise of Forgiveness by SunseticMonster (23k)
George’s new potion has caught the interest of the entire Auror Department, thanks to an article by the elusive Draco Malfoy. So, when Harry sees Malfoy in the middle of a panic attack, he attempts to make amends as a ploy to find out what’s really been going on.
(Oh this Draco, who bakes his own biscuits and has anxiety and is all-around awkward and lovely. He’s so sweet in this and I’m so proud of him.)

And an Owl Named Romeo by Rickey (26k)
Draco breeds owls, Harry’s an Auror, and an owl named Romeo is going to bring them together.
(As if the idea of a Draco with cute little owlets isn’t enough, this one sends snarky letters and is frankly HILARIOUS. Love his voice in this, love it allll.)

Currency by blythely (31k)
Harry wasn’t at school any more, nor was he fifteen. He was a successful merchant banker with a flat to die for and an owl who loved him. And he wasn’t going to get into a pissing match with a stick-fiddler who’d always driven him mental.
(This fic is full of melodramatic!Draco and I loveeee it. He’s a total geek about wands and wandlore, and he and Harry have such passion.)

With a quiet rumble of tyres, the SUV pulled up beside them. Its black surface reflected the warehouses, the cranes, the wharf, defining the car’s presence only by the way it distorted its surroundings. The driver’s door opened and Ianto stepped out, leaving the engine purring. As usual, he was dressed in a three-piece suit and tie. His shirt was double-cuffed, secured by cufflinks. He even wore a tie pin. Sometimes Toshiko thought that he wasn’t quite real.
‘I hope I’m not too late,’ he said calmly.
‘Ianto, you’re never too late and you’re never too early.’ Jack stood up and looked around. ‘That’s why we love you.‘

Slow Decay by Andy Lane (Torchwood Novels #3)

I adore this description of Ianto. Also, that’s only ONE of the many reasons we love him. Jack too.

The Harlequin Formula || Peter Parker x Reader

You all know about those short novella like romance novels published under the name Harlequin, right? Well, there’s also many manga artists who often transcribe the written text into a graphic novel form that I just adore reading!

So reading Harlequin comics is like one of the things I do for like, guilty pleasure and stuff because those kinds of comics is super pandering to young women (like me). Sure, a lot of the times the romance seems forced and unlikely to happen, but let me tell you, I read a Harlequin comic last night and the fact that it had a strong heroine who wasn’t afraid of the main love interest AND could read him like a book-

I was hooked.

So this whole story is inspired by the whole “harlequin formula” usually seen in those types of stories and how the ‘reader character’ tries to break them in hopes of finding a genuine type of love.

I hope you readers will enjoy this story ;w; .

When you were younger, you often filled your romantic daydreams with Harlequin novels. You didn’t know what true love felt like and often read these short novellas in order to get a glimpse of how love worked.

It was through these short stories that you learned the following things:

Love is when a demure woman falls for a powerful man.

The powerful man is often a multi-billionaire of some sort who comes off as cold and aloof, but is innately missing something all the same.

And whatever he was missing would always be love, to which the leading lady would offer him almost unconditionally, regardless of how cruel he was to her.

After the end of these novels, you would find yourself with tears in your eyes at just how wonderful the love story was. “That’s what true love has to be about, finding love in unexpected places while following your man to the ends of the earth.”

Each time you would finish a story, you would sigh and fall back against your twin bed, your hair fanning out beneath your head as you clutched the novel to your chest before softly murmuring (as if hoping that the more times you said it, then it would likely come true), “I honestly can’t wait to fall in love.”

Title: How To Groom Your Angel

Author: allthebeautifulthings9828

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Words: 2,893 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin J’s notes: This fic is a perfect example of how you don’t have to write huuuge smut scenes to make fic to be full of Destiel moments. This is perfect.

Summary: The season is turning colder and, unexpectedly, Castiel’s wings molt. When Dean and Sam see black wing feathers shed everywhere, Castiel is embarrassed. Dean confronts him about it privately and learns that an angel’s wings are an intensely private thing, like seeing a human naked. But Dean is curious. Before either of them understand the implications, Castiel is allowing him to see his wings.

Admin J’s notes: This is a very dear fic for me. Shortly: I like the idea of Cas healing Dean by his Grace. This fic was kind of fantasy novel like to me and I adored it. It’s a very good wing fic, very well written and very enjoyable. If you want to read just one wing fic, read this.

Summary: The prompt was “Dean receives an … unusual … Christmas gift from Castiel.” The gift turns out to be wings.

Words: 2,136 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin J’s notes: This is a bedtime story for all the Destiel shippers out there. So easygoing, cute and absolutely fabulous fic with cuteness overload. And kitten.

Summary: On the first day Dean moves into his dorm room, he ends up getting shoved up against a wall and getting kissed like the world is ending - except the guy was only trying to smuggle a cat into his room. That’s how it starts, at least.

Admin J’s notes: This is the fic I have been waiting to rec in these lists. I mean… This is perfect. There’s no words to describe this. I don’t even like Dean and Cas being old (I mean grandpa-way old) but this works so well. And the idea of the POV random child is genius! So good job with this one.

Summary: I like to imagine that someday when Dean and Sam and Castiel have finally saved the world, and are able to settle down, that Dean and Cas will get married and settle in a little town and Dean will make friends with all the neighborhood kids. He’ll keep an eye on them, and keep them out of trouble. And he’ll tell them stories…

Words: 4,118 - Finished

Admin J’s notes: This was good! I mean, the soldier Cas? Always good. I also liked the author’s way to write and there were funny little parts that made me to laugh (“It must be the beard”, haha, oh God!) and also parts that told perfectly how it was for Dean not to have Cas with him.

Summary: Having Cas deployed for so long really sucks. Having Cas gone for the holidays sucks even more.

I’d like to take this moment to thank fanfiction writers for existing… some of you are REALLY talented and write amazing stories that I absolutely adore reading. As a child I constantly had my nose in a novel but these days I don’t have the patience or time to sit and read anything too long in one go… Fics are the perfect solution! (I write too when I can manage to string two words together, but I’m definitely nowhere near as skilled as half you people.)

Here is a list of my absolute favorites:
(NOTE: I read romance fics exclusively)

KAKASAKU (why isn’t this pairing called Sakashi??)

KENSHIN/KOARU (idk the pairing name…?)

Apart from Kylo checking Rey out, twice, when he looks through her memories he rather quickly drops "where's the Droid" and and concentrates on her lonely nights. How can anyone associate familial connection with them is beyond me.

I totally agree, he got distracted by her dreams. And then there is this from the novelization that I just adore….

“Ah, he thought to himself. Something there, of interest. Not the image of the map. That would take another moment. But definitely something worth investigating. He shifted his perception toward it, seeking to identify, to analyze, to–”

Where is your logic Kylo Ren? Where??? 😆

anonymous asked:

Do u only ship sladin

i feel like i get this question monthly LOL. not a bad thing, of course i do appreciate you asking BUT for starters i don’t entirely ship ‘sladin’. i’m not gonna bore you here but sladin is slade/robin and in most instances, robin is underage. i DO, however, have an active sladeWING ship (i think the fandom has settled on this combination) which is slade/nightwing. nightwing IS of age. i just want to clarify that because it’s…important.

but to the actual meat of the question here, canonically i don’t ship slade with anyone other than his ex wife adeline. canonically, that will always be the love of his life and no one has or ever will change that.

PERSONALLY, sladewing is a favorite ship of mine, yes, but that has really only magnified on here considering the only person who writes it with me ( guess who ) has slowly built it from the ground up with me for MONTHS. we both took the time to…not really jump into it? (i mean…we didn’t even plan on shipping them) because we’re going for realistic and that, above all, was most important in terms of shipping muses.

HAVE I OR WOULD I BE WILLING TO SHIP WITH OTHERS? yes. but, again, this is still slade wilson we’re talking about here…and i will never alter his character for the purpose of just having a ship.

in SUMMARY: i’m sorry my dash is always this ship but it is the only real ship that i have and i adore it and @halysborn more than life itself sooooooooo

I can never ever NOT burst out laughing when I watch this scene because (1) what phrase were you going to use Anakin? (2) Obi-Wan’s scowl at Anakin’s being nosy and (3) both their faces in the third gif, Obi-Wan intensely worried but still annoyed and kind of embarrassed, Anakin being amused at his master’s expense. And I love it that just by looking at Obi-Wan’s reaction I can already tell the answer to Anakin’s question (and Korkie was modeled like he was for a reason)

On a serious note, I would adore a novel written about Obi-Wan’s year on Mandalore, about the blossoming relationship between 2 idealistic, head-strong young individuals: one defending the innocents and one following pacifism. It turned out later that they couldn’t strictly follow their determined paths, but reading about their younger days and their tragic love would be bittersweet nevertheless.

(Off-topic but I’m kind of sad that almost all theories about Korkie being Obi-Wan’s son are created to justified the Rey Kenobi theory, a theory I’m not a fan of.)

Author: nekosmuse

Rating: General Audiences

Words: 2,956 –  Finished

Admin J’s notes: I love how much Destiel this is, even if they’re not even kissing. It’s written from the POV Sam which is always amazing because poor Sam! I always feel so sorry for Sam. I need to make a list of fics in which there are epic “poor Sam” moments. Anyway, the POV Sam is very well written, totally different way to use language than in POV Dean, which makes this one even better. Good job, author.

Summary: Castiel comes back from Purgatory a little different. Sam doesn’t want to talk about it.

Aka the one where people can see Cas’ wings, Dean discovers a kink, and Sam resolves to be a good brother. Also, dust baths are had on the side of not-so-deserted highways and #angeldustbaths trends on Twitter. Utter fluffy crack.

Words: 4,274 –  Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin J’s notes: While reading, I got a bit frustrated because of the lack of last letters. I know that Dean speaks that way, but it’s just annoying if everything he says is like “talkin’, sayin’, hatin’”… You got the idea? Good. It’s okay once in awhile, but not all the time. If you ignore that fact, this fic is a nice little wing!fic with smut and fluff.

Summary: Cas exhaled. “When an angel’s wings are injured,” he said to his feet, “the healing process can be augmented by… grooming, I suppose, would be the most accurate word. Removal of the maimed feathers to allow growth of healthy ones. Otherwise, they’re left to fall out alone.” He tilted his head towards the nightstand. “As you see.”

Dean stared at him. “So… that’s why I can’t help?” he said slowly. “‘Cause I can’t, y'know… see ‘em? Or touch 'em?”

“Yes,” Cas said, slightly too quickly, and Dean snorted.

“You’re still a shitty liar, Cas,” he informed him. “What ain’t you tellin’ me?”

Admin J’s notes: It seems that I’m giving so many five stars today but I can’t help it: these are good. The author is one of my favorites and I just love her way of writing. Once again, it works so well, and in this fic the entire atmosphere is so from the show. No big moments between Dean and Cas, only a huge tension and bond. It’s amazing! I love all the little details, everything just works together so well.

Doing some Serious Math™ to determine a logical age for Tobirama to have on his wrist if he was supposed to meet Obito for the first time at the time of reanimation. Gettin' super serious about this shit! Turns out he'd likely be around 100-110 depending on how old he was when the village was founded (we're never given an age for him or Hashi) and how old the generation between them and Tsunade were when they gave birth to her. Look at me, fact checking things no one cares about again! XD

Haha! I completely understand. I’m the same way. I get stuck on details like that forever. I really wish that Kishimoto would have seriously timelined his story. It was one of his biggest world building fails that he didn’t, because you see the inconsistencies sometimes. It would make writing so much easier. But I think you’d probably be right about the 100-110. I don’t think I can explain the degree of excitement I am feeling right now that you are writing this!

Anyone who hasn’t seen them yet, Rae has been writing some amazing Soulmate fanfics here. I’m still making my way through them, but I’ve loved every single one of them so far.

How do you feel about Damerey (Poe x Rey)? It's been getting a lot of hate recently from Reylo, Finnrey, and StormPilot fans even though it's an innocent ship like Finnrey and StormPilot. Reylo is awful, but I don't bully the fans personally like they (sometimes) do to us JediPilot lovers. Plus, the hug between Rey and Poe in the novel is adorable as all get out! I hope they'll interact more in the films.

I personally haven’t read the novel, so I don’t have much of an opinion on JediPilot bc they didn’t really interact much in The Force Awakens. I’ve seen the hug you mentioned though, and it is pretty adorable. I guess I reserve my judgement until I see them together more - but you’re right. Reylo is awful and knowing Poe and Rey as we do, I don’t think anyone should be getting hate for shipping Damerey.

Sanderson, seriously why?

True story. I was at barnes and noble, an innocent child in the nights mist. I found myself strolling over to the sci fi fantasy section of the store and figured I would look into “The Stormlight Archive” since I am currently reading Mistborn and I adore Sanderson’s work. I find this fucking novel on the shelf, after having struggled to determine if it was a fucking brick or a book. Sanderson, why?

Can anyone point me in the direction of this character development for tsukiyama? I really don't mean any disrespect, but I obviously need something to open up my eyes, 'cuz I'm not seeing it. He went from I'd eat anyone as long as they appeal to me! to I smelled that guy now I'm obsessed and he died so Imma die too cuz I can't get on that. I don't know, he just sounds like one of those guilt tripping Nice Guys to me :( if anyone says but he cares for ken i'm not here for that,he wants dinner

Whether you decide to answer that or not, I’ll respect your opinion, cuz I respect you a whole lot, and I like your meta-breakdowns, so I’m asking. Thanks, in advance

Anon, I appreciate your kind words but I have to disagree with how you’re framing this in your mind. Maybe I can give you a different frame of reference for Tsukiyama’s actions.

Now, I adore Tsukiyama but I haven’t read the novels and so I am not as up to speed on his (former) character as other tumblr users. There are other metas about him from people who have read the novels, and you’re welcome to look those up for reference. But from what I can tell, there are two components to your question:

1) How has Tsukiyama’s character developed through the manga?

2) Is Tsukiyama following the “Nice Guy” trajectory, or does he give a damn about Kaneki? (I know you said you’re not here for the idea that he cares about Ken, but that raises the question, so.)

So I will address them in that order.

Tsukiyama’s Character Development

It’s undoubtable that when Tsukiyama was first introduced, he was interested in Kaneki for one reason only–he wanted to eat him.

He was a nuisance. Touka said so, and I am sure she wasn't’ the only one who felt that way. Lest we forget, the “Gourmet” was one of the reasons why the CCG decided to increase Dove presence in the 20th Ward, so Tsukiyama was clearly bringing some very unwanted attention. Then, he went on to try and eat Kaneki, going so far as to make him one of the dishes available at his ghoul restaurant.

When Kaneki fights back and breaks Taro’s arm, Tsukiyama is pleased…he’s pleased that Kaneki was able to think clearly in the situation, was able to fight back, and was able to provide entertainment for his guests.

Did Tsukiyama care about Kaneki at this point? No. Absolutely not. He just wanted to impress his guests by providing a good show. But Tsukiyama did save Kaneki, only to make him a meal of his own. Tsukiyama selfishly wanted to have Kaneki to himself. He did not want to share him with the others. So he made a new plan. He lured Kaneki into a church so that he could eat him there. I am not going to examine this part too closely…we know that Tsukiyama selfishly wanted to eat Kaneki himself, and that he was beaten. But there is one part I would like to draw attention to:

“I do not have any memories of ever being broken.”

Just….keep that quote in your back pocket, for now.

Of course, as we know, Kaneki was kidnapped by Aogiri and then tortured by Jason. When Anteiku decided to try and rescue Kaneki, they knew that they needed all of the assistance that they could get. One of the people who chose to help them was Tsukiyama. Now, obviously, going on this mission meant risking their lives. So Tsukiyama was risking his life, but still only for a meal. He wanted to eat Kaneki. He wanted to consume the creature who had managed to evade him twice, while intriguing him so. He wanted to make Kaneki his, and he didn’t want any of those Aogiri assholes to eat the meal he’d worked so hard to obtain. He was willing to put his life on the line for his dinner. Did Tsukiyama care about Kaneki as a person at this point? No. You could argue that there was some more intense, subliminal stuff going on, but for all intents and purposes, for all that we know, Tsukiyama just wanted his dinner.

After Kaneki is rescued, Banjou pledges himself as Kankei’s Sheild, and in response, Tsukiyama pledges himself as Kaneki’s Sword.

Kaneki accepts this, but warns Tsukiyama that any unnecessary actions will not be tolerated. Tsukiyama is turned on by this, and wants to eat Kaneki even more.

Time passes. The next several chapters focus on Amon, Akira, Shinohara, and Juuzou, which a little bit about Hide. When we see Tsukiyama and Kankei again, it is in a flashback. Tsukiyama appears to be up to his usual hijinks…

He proceeds to help Kaneki murder and cannibalize all of his “friends.” Though he may not have felt much affection or loyalty toward them, he had known these ghouls for a very long time. This is the first time I would claim true development of character. Why? Because Tsukiyama is more loyal to Kaneki, or to his desire for Kaneki, than he is to those he has known for a long time. Remember, the first time he brought Kaneki into the restaurant, he merely killed a scrapper. Scrappers are considered pets, so while it was violent, it wasn’t even remotely similar to killing a fellow ghoul. In this case, he didn’t kill one ghoul…he killed hundreds.

This is development because his devotion to Kaneki is growing. This is confirmed a few pages later when we see…

Him acting as essentially a bodyguard to Kaneki.

Him referring to Kaneki as his “master”…

Him admiring Kaneki, and standing back while Kaneki takes down his enemies.

Now, there’s way much here to give pictures for, but as that chapters go on, we see that Tsukiyama is working side by side with Kaneki. He is bankrolling Kaneki, providing him with a home, getting him into the places that he needs to be, going along with all of Kaneki’s plans, and not trying to eat him. It could be argued that this is all a part of Tsukiyama’s plans, but I think at this point - spending all of his time on Kaneki, spending vast amounts of money on Kaneki, designing Kaneki’s clothing (where did he get the new centipede eyepatch? His new clothes? we know he designed Kaneki’s sexy af battlesuit) - it’s safe to say that Tsukiyama’s interest has….outgrown what he would do for a meal.

He considers the people in Kaneki’s squad to be his friends, and he is lonely.

Later, we see him confused when Kaneki left him behind at the hospital, and fighting at Kaneki’s side, even sustaining physical damage from Naki on Kaneki’s behalf.

This goes on. He follows Kaneki everywhere, and he does everything at his side. He never once tries to eat him, though he keeps acting like that is what he’s getting at. Then, after the incident with Kanou when Kaneki goes half-kakuja and hurts, Banjou, he’s very depressed. He wont leave his room. It is Tsukiyama that dares to enter, and this is some of what happens.

Apparently, he has observed Kaneki so closely that he knows the one thing that can cheer him up: novels. And Kaneki goes from this:

To this:

In a matter of hours.

To cheer up Hinami, Tsukiyama takes her out for tea:

Showing that he’s not only well behaved when Kaneki is watching, but when he doesn’t particularly stand to gain anything. Now, of course, Tsukiyama is still claiming to himself that he is just working to acquire Kaneki as a meal.

Yes, Tsukiyama is creepily sniffing his Kaneki-cloth, But actions speak louder than words, do they not? And Tsukiyama hasn’t done anything to actually harm Kaneki in almost over 6 months at this point. In fact, everything that he has been doing has been to help Kaneki and those who surround Kaneki. And he knows it.

What he doesn’t seem to realize yet, is why.

Kaneki chooses to return to Anteiku, and tells his “family” that he is going and that he would like them to join him.

Tsukiyama claims, within his own mind, that though Kaneki is a lot of trouble, he’s still “good spice,” and therefore worth following.

But lets consider this for a moment. At this point, Tsukiyama has risked his life several times, allowed his friends to be killed and cannibalized, bankrolled Kaneki, taken pains to cheer him up when he’s down, fought by him at his side. He’s made friends with Kaneki’s friends. He’s done everything that he possibly could do for Kaneki.

At this point, do you really, honestly believe that this has anything to do with wanting a meal?

Then the Anteiku raid begins. And this is where Tsukiyama has his moment of truth. Kaneki is intent on sacrificing himself for his friends. Tsukiyama…well…

Tsukiyama has seen Kaneki fight. He has seen Kaneki’s struggle. He’s given everything in his power to help Kaneki. And now Kaneki is throwing his life away on a battle that he can not win. Tsukiyama still says he wants to eat him, but you can not convince me that is his motivation in this scene. He’s hysterical. He’s in massive distress. He doesn’t want to lose someone that he’s actually come to love.

That’s right. I am saying that Tsukiyama actually loves Kaneki, and that his actions in this seen are borne from that love.

He’s devastated because he can’t stop Kaneki.

And if you need more proof, Kaneki himself thanks Tsukiyama for trying to stop him. Because in that moment, Kaneki knows that Tsukiyama isn’t trying to hurt him, and he isn’t trying to kill him. In that moment, he knows that Tsukiyama was trying to stop him because he cares about him. And Tsukiyama was willing to throw his life away for that.

And honestly, he does. Losing Kaneki, but even worse, being incapable of stopping him from throwing his own life away, literally destroys Tsukiyama. He doesn’t move, for how long we don’t know. He doesn’t eat for three years. That’s not mourning a lost meal. That’s grief. That’s devastation. That’s coming from a place of deep, deep love.

And this is where point 2 comes in.

The “nice guy” trope pattern is as follows: Nice Guy falls in lust, Nice Guy does nice things for object of lust, object rejects Nice Guy, and Nice Guy flies into a rage and aims to hurt the object.

But by this time, Kaneki is not an object to Tsukiyama. If Kaneki was an object, Tsukiyama would not have gone three years without eating. He would not have been devastated. He would have actually tried to hurt Kaneki, instead of just losing his shit and falling impotently to the ground. If Tsukiyama only cared about Kaneki as a meal, he would not have lost literally every aspect of his identity when Kaneki threw his life away.

Somewhere between agreeing to be Kaneki’s sword and begging him not to go for dear life, Tsukiyama Shuu fell deeply in love with him. He started out at the Nice Guy, but he ended up being the tragic half of love unrequited. And in the end, Kaneki understood that Tsukiyama’s attack came from a place of love, not lust or hunger, but love. That’s why he thanked him.

Before Kaneki, Tsukiyama was a carefree, hedonistic ghoul with very little conscience to speak of. Kaneki changed him in a way that Tsukiyama still can’t come back from. And despite his connections, his money, his energy, his efforts, and his love, he couldn’t stop Kaneki from throwing himself at the mercy of the CCG. And that devastated him.

I hope that you read all of this, anon, it’s taken me two hours to write. But if you read all of this and still think that Tsukiyama hasn’t developed as a character, at the very least, then I don’t even know what to tell you. To me, it’s entirely clear that Tsukiyama both developed like crazy AND fell in love with Kaneki. I hope that, at the very least, you can understand where I am getting this viewpoint from.

I’ve never understood when people say that a fictional thing (a book, a show, etc.) has changed their lives.

A little over a year ago I wasn’t feeling great. I’d just finished a three year writing course at university, and a combination of essay writing about books I’m mostly not interested in (and ruining the ones that I am) and teachers saying that you have to get your work published in literary journals and apply for competitions because publishers won’t even want to touch your work if they can’t recognise your name. I loathe essays, and I don’t write literary fiction, the only kind of fiction this country seems to be interested in. I was losing the passion for the only thing I’d ever been passionate about, and the one thing I’d ever been half decent at.

Almost ten months ago I was becoming depressed. I couldn’t find a job - in editing, in writing, or even in hospitality or retail - and the government decided that if you want to be getting money for them you either had to be studying full time or applying for 20 jobs a fortnight. I’d only finished studying and there was nothing else that caught my interest, and there’s barely 20 jobs to apply for every two weeks, and that’s with me living in a well populated, urban area (I’d hate to imagine what it’s like for people living out in the country, where there’s five stores and nothing else unless you want to drive for half an hour). And of course coming into this depression was making the heaping amount of anxiety I already have much, much worse.

I was just losing the will to go on as I was, and I was mostly doing it for my friends and family.

At the end of my course I started reading Skulduggery Pleasant and my god, it was the best thing I’d read in three years. It made me smile, it made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me went to throw the book against the wall (but I’d paid like $20 for that book, so I couldn’t). It made me remember all the reasons I love reading and writing; to illicit such emotion is an amazing skill to have.

This made me feel great about writing, and I began my own novel as part of nanowrimo 2015. As of today I’m in the rewriting process (second draft), and the first draft had approximately 40,000 words; the most I’ve ever written for any project.

But of course we still need to fast forward a bit. There’s this whole, like, six months filled with some kind of depression and some awful anxiety and that one time I had a job for like a month but it made the whole thing worse and let’s skip over that part.

Let’s skip to now. Because of Skulduggery Pleasant I remembered my passion for my life’s craft. And if I’d never started reading that book and writing my novel, I’d never have applied for a screenwriting course at another uni, which we’ve been told is extremely difficult to get into; there’s countless applications every year, and there’s probably about fifty people in the (first year) class; I was part of the mid-year intake, and there’s ten of us, maximum.

Without Skulduggery Pleasant I wouldn’t be writing a novel I adore, or planning another one for this coming nanowrimo. I wouldn’t be planning my own show and slowly tapping away at the pilot, and I wouldn’t be planning two more with a friend I’ve made in this course that I’m enjoying so much more than my other one. I don’t know where I’d be.

I’ve never understood when people say that a fictional work has changed their life but now I do, because Skulduggery Pleasant has legitimately changed mine for the better.
