Love, and who knows it

Fundamental truths of Sherlock: Sherlock loves John, and John loves Sherlock. That is simply true, and there is no counter argument. You can (if you like) get into the finer details about what kind of love and what it means, what specific desires it implies, but the fact of it (love, mutual) is not in question. So, within this narrative so far, does John know that Sherlock loves him?

Is there any possible way that he doesn’t already know this?

John has learned a lot about Sherlock’s feelings in the last year or so. There was the whole faked death situation (not good), but since then, Sherlock has both inadvertently and deliberately articulated his feelings about John to John.

When John asked Sherlock to be his best man, John got a look into Sherlock’s inner workings: for all his ego, Sherlock had no idea that he was John’s best friend. Would anyone guess that Sherlock Holmes required that kind of explicit conversation to understand the nature of his most critical relationship? So what did Sherlock think had been going on on this time, John must have asked himself. I’m not sure he’d come up with an easy answer.

You could comfortably say, because of that profound misunderstanding, that it would be difficult for John to be certain that Sherlock loves him.  John has a lot of questions about Sherlock (99% of which are about his sexuality and romantic inclinations) that Sherlock has never answered.

But then there was that speech Sherlock wrote and delivered. And it was pretty clear from his speech that John is the greatest thing Sherlock’s ever seen, greater, even than crime solving and drugs. Sherlock expressed his love for John in that speech, so much so that John and the entire audience had a cry. Is it a surprise to him at that point? I think it is. Is the surprise that Sherlock feels these things at all, or is it that he was (finally) willing to say so, and that he said so in front of an audience? Or all these of those things? In any case, there it is: Sherlock loves you, John.

If, by some chance, Sherlock’s speech failed to communicate to John that Sherlock loves him, Sherlock goes ahead and makes the point it a few more times.

John most definitely sees the look on Sherlock’s face at his reception, post pregnancy deduction. That is the face of a man with a broken heart. Is there any way John doesn’t know what he’s seeing? I don’t think there is. He ducks away from it. He jokes his way out of it, badly. If there’s one moment where John has to unequivocally confront Sherlock’s feelings about him, that had to be it. And Sherlock walks away alone.

Sure: Sherlock lies to John about his fake heterosexual relationship with Janine just to watch jealous steam rise out of his ears, but it’s possible John was in no state to process that little tidbit as the passive aggressive bullshit it is. And sure: Sherlock comes back to life for love of John. But John doesn’t know that, only we know that. Sherlock then risks his life again and ends up in an ambulance with a cardiac arrest so he can unmask Mary because John is in danger. But John doesn’t know exactly why Sherlock did that, either. John wasn’t in Sherlock’s mind palace with us, so he won’t know those details.

But Sherlock’s more overt emotional demonstrations continue. He throws his life away by putting a bullet in the head of the guy threatening John’s future. Oh, but that was for Mary, I hear you saying. Well, okay. That sounds fake, but okay, I’ll give you that. Even if you say that’s for Mary, there’s yet another moment that’s pretty undeniable.

What do you think John is expecting Sherlock to say on the tarmac? I don’t know if John’s ready to hear it, but do you think it’s possible that he isn’t expecting a love confession in that moment?

Sherlock hasn’t said so in those precise three words to John before, but I’m pretty sure John already knows that Sherlock loves him.

Just thought this would be useful to consider as context. Who knows what might happen next.

Some men are born to plow fields, some live to be great physicians, others to be great kings. Me? I was born to serve you, Arthur, and I’m proud of that, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Did you know? That in the new film Moana there are some references to Lin Manuel Miranda’s favorite Disney film? What’s that film? Why it’s The Little Mermaid! During the song number “You’re Welcome” Flounder can be seen with the 2d Fish as they swim up to the music to meet Maui and Moana on their boat. Points of you can spot him in the photo above! Beyond this little cameo there is also mention of another famous crab in Moana after the credits so make sure you don’t leave the theater early after the film!

Things you might not know about the production of Sense8

As found in the behind-the-scenes documentary, Sense8: Creating the World

  • All of the scenes were shot in the countries they were shown to be in. So they really did shoot in Mumbai and Seoul and Berlin etc.
  • They hired local actors and crews for each of the countries, which helped increase the realism of the scenes.
  • Between main, side, and minor characters, there were around 180 speaking roles.
  • When the cast visited each country they wouldn’t break between them. They’d be in one country shooting one day, and then shooting in another in the next.
  • The scene with Riley and Capheus, and also with Will on the plane to Iceland was literally shot on a plane to Iceland.
  • The cast described traveling around the world together for 4 months as something that created a family bond between them. They all grew very close and considered the feeling of the few times where they could all be together as ‘electric’.
  • They described being in the different cities as having different vibes and feelings that could only be experienced by really being there, which added a lot to their portrayals and helped them a lot with understanding their characters.
  • There were scenes that were shot two, three, or even four times due to having to do certain parts in different countries. This often meant that scenes could be changed a little as they had chances to watch over previous takes and see if they could improve it in some way in the new city.
  • The show really shot in the middle of the Gay Pride parade, and the scene where Nomi fell off of the motorbike was in the midst of the ‘Dyke’s on Bikes’ part of the parade.
  • They also had real wide-shots from the Mumbai Ganesh festival, however it would have been impossible to shoot the acting parts because of the vast amount of people that attend.
  • When shooting scenes where the sensates ‘share’, they don’t shoot one character doing the scene, shoot the other, and then put them together through editing. Clever camera shots where the camera pans away for a few seconds meant they would often literally switch places by one doing things like ducking and rolling away on the ground whilst the other jumped in their place.
  • Aml Ameen said that when he played Capheus driving the van, 90% of it was actually him. He got to drive around Nairobi, and was actually pulled over by the police at one point and the crew had to explain what was going on.
  • In Riley’s opening scene that establishes her as a DJ, she was playing to a real audience. She came on between two other real and well known DJ’s, and the audience wasn’t aware that she wasn’t a real DJ.
  • The very first scene Miguel shot as Lito was the sex scene in ‘Demons’.
  • The wrestling match that Lito, Hernando, and Daniela attended was a real match, with a real crowd and fighters.
  • Kala and Rajan’s dance scene was repeatedly shot all in one take rather than in short parts unlike traditional Bollywood movie dance scenes.
  • Brian sustained multiple injuries during the course of the show through Will’s action sequences including hurting his shoulder and his triceps, including an internal bleeding bruise.
  • Doona Bae was extremely excited about the cast coming to Seoul as that is where she lives, and so she gave them all tours around the city.
  • Similarly, Max Riemelt cooked dinner for his cast mates and showed them around Berlin.
  • Jamie Clayton said that her favorite scene in San Francisco was when Nomi was escaping by bike and decided to try and steal a car to get away before realizing she couldn’t drive, mentioning that she herself doesn’t know how to drive either.

And plenty more. It’s on Netflix. so you guys should definitely watch it if you haven’t already!

Critical Shipping
  • Marisha: Yeah, [Matt] would lately, after the insurgence of the Percy/Lillith fan art that started hitting, when people started shipping Percy and Lillith -
  • Laura: Oh my god, I love that!
  • Marisha: I know, it's so good. The art's SO good. So we were like okay. So, the first one that Joma did that came out where it's Percy leaving the room -
  • Taleisin: Yeah!
  • Marisha: With Lillith on the bed.
  • Laura: Oh god! Oh god!
  • Marisha: And we were like -
  • Laura: That was so hot!
  • Marisha: Aw yeah, we were like, "Aw, that's really hot!" and Matt's like, "But not canon! Not canon! Not canon!" Cut to Matt being like, "... Although you know... It could be a thing where, like, maybe Percy was staying up late and he was like working in his shop -"
  • Taleisin and Laura: *laughing and gaping at Matt, respectively*
  • Marisha: "and then Lillith comes in and she sees him -"
  • Travis: Oh my god!
  • Matt: I was just - No! That's -
  • Marisha: "And she's like 'Ya know what? We could be doing this.' And then he's like and he's feeling a bad day, so she, like, touches his cheek and they go up to the room." And I'm like, "ARE YOU WRITING FANFIC!? Are you writing Percy and Lillith fanfic, RIGHT NOW!?!"
