and flying back again

Christmas was coming. One morning in mid-December, Hogwarts woke to find itself covered in several feet of snow. The lake froze solid and the Weasley twins were punished for bewitching several snowballs so that they followed Quirrell around, bouncing off the back of his turban. The few owls that managed to battle their way through the stormy sky to deliver mail had to be nursed back to health by Hagrid before they could fly off again.

Driving Miss Daisy

Star Wars’s Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver dish on the epic franchise and beyond in V Magazine.

“I had no sense of what I was getting into. No sense of what was really going to happen,” confesses Daisy Ridley of her first-ever role as Rey in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Currently, Ridley is on location in a remote forest a few hours outside of Montreal for Chaos Walking, a 2019 sci-fi release costarring Tom Holland. But it’s this December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the follow-up to The Force Awakens, that is shining a blinding light-saber-tinged spotlight on Ridley. The Force Awakens was the first movie since 1997’s Titanic to sell more than 100 million tickets in the U.S.

It isn’t typical for a young actress’s breakthrough film to have the biggest domestic opening weekend in history, raking in $238 million, but Ridley isn’t all that typical herself. As the face of the nearly $10 billion franchise, Ridley has ushered in a new era of Star Wars. Following Carrie Fisher’s untimely passing last year, Ridley’s character, a fiercely independent heroine, serves as a particularly strong female voice in a galaxy far, far away. However, a far- flung galaxy isn’t Ridley’s only on-screen locale this season.

In November, Ridley appears opposite Johnny Depp and an all-star cast in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express. The suspenseful tale follows 13 passengers, played by the likes of Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, and Willem Dafoe, stranded on an opulent passenger train with a murderer on the loose. Aside from blockbuster films, Ridley also produced and narrated the documentary The Eagle Huntress, which follows a teenage girl in the mountains of Mongolia as she becomes the first female eagle huntress in the sport’s 2,000-year history.

Ahead of The Last Jedi’s release, Ridley catches up with her Star Wars costar (and “bestie”), Adam Driver.

Daisy Ridley Hey Adam, it’s been so long.

Adam Driver Hey Daisy, how are you? When is the last time that I saw you?

DR Well, I don’t know because you don’t come to all the fun things that I go to. [laughs] Last July? It’s been like a year!

AD Oh, yeah, I guess. I’m much taller now.

DR How has your life changed? [laughs]

AD Oh, just in little ways. So, where are you now?

DR I’m in Canada, two hours outside of Montreal in these creepy woods. We feel like we’re going to be killed at any moment in this cabin. We’re shooting a film, Chaos Walking, with Doug Liman, Tom Holland, and Demián Bichir. It’s fucking cool.

AD Did you guys have time to meet each other before? Or did you just kind of jump right in?

DR I had met Tom Holland twice very briefly—for, like, 30 seconds—and I had met Doug Liman once and we spoke a bit, but it was very much feet first, it was super quick.

AD So, is it hard for you to meet people and just kind of go? Or do you prefer it?

DR [laughs] I mean, as we discovered, Adam, we became besties last year, but we had met some years before. It really takes me a while to relax with people. I don’t think I’m very good at meeting people: I feel awfully uncomfortable. So, I find meeting people very stressful. But it gets easier, and I think I’m getting better at being okay with that, you know?

AD Yeah, you always seemed very open, but I feel the same as you. When I meet people, I don’t know how to small talk very well, so it’s always like two back-and-forths of like, “Hey, how are you? How’s the weather?” And then five seconds later, I’m like, “So, what’s your relationship like with your mother?” It always goes really deep really quickly.

DR [laughs] I think you’re really good at it.

AD Oh, thank you. So, this is about Star Wars: If Rey was a color…I’m kidding.

DR No, oh my God. [laughs]

AD What were your initial conversations with J.J. [Abrams] about your character? Did you know the character’s name was Rey?

Song to play during this chapter: Hold me tight ~

The next day your college lecture dragged on and on, as your outdated professor talked about western literature and you tried to take notes while your other classmates buzzed with hushed conversation.

Jimin sat next to you; you had gotten approval from the college secretary early this morning for Jimin to attend classes with you. Technically he was registered as your “mental health hybrid” though she had taken one look at Jimin and been disbelieving. A tidy letter from a very concerned Dr. Kim Seokjin (that jin had dropped off this morning) and a large bill clipped too it made her much more obliging.

Though the people in your class were used to your brother’s men waiting outside of your lectures for you, they were not used to Jimin sitting next to you throughout your class. Most of them thought your guards where an endless string of extremely attractive boyfriends. Hoseok had scoffed at that when it had been his turn to watch you one-day last semester.

Jimin’s long muscular body bent over the table as he rested his head on the notebook in front of him. His presence excited more than a few stares from your classmates. And you had to admit he looked intimidating in his black pants and white t-shirt, a beanie thrown on to protect and cover his ears from prying eyes. Thought you could see them twitch under the hood, and more than a few people noticed his tail.

He had been a little tired this morning- and had asked you quietly for a notebook to doodle on while your class dragged on. The earlier class had been easier- it was only an hour long while your humanities class was almost 3 hours long. Jimin was slumped over that notebook now- and you saw where the ink had bled onto the side of his hand.

You suspected that the settee hadn’t been nearly as comfortable as he had said and that was why he hadn’t slept well. Guilt gnawed at you for making him sleep in the same room as you last night.

beside you, Jimin could hear every snippet of conversation and filter out the important ones. Tiredness pulled at his bones, he hadn’t slept last night worried that someone would try and sneak into your room and he hadn’t minded it. It had given him a lot of time to mull over things in his head.

Snippets of conversation subtly drifted to a pair of girls behind you. Most of the conversation had been innocent- though some referenced Jimin with an appreciation that made him more than a little flustered. But this conversation wasn’t like that.

“Damn, I didn’t know her parents were rich enough to buy her a hybrid like that.”

“Oh it’s not her parents- it’s her brother.”

“Oh? Who’s her brother?”

“He’s some gang hotshot but no one really knows his name- they just call him the monster.” The girls got quieter. “He probably doesn’t deserve the name- he’s probably just some rich boy with a superiority complex. I hear they call her the little devil- and that she’s fucked half the guy’s she brings around here.”

Jimin shot up turning around to stare at the woman dead in the eyes.

“I think he heard you.” Jimin let out a small growl- low and threatening, it rippled in the mostly quiet lecture room. You looked at him perplexed, of course, you hadn’t heard what they said, everyone turned to look at the interaction.

‘Lust for Life’ best lyric quotes

Lana Del Rey just released her not-so-dramatic new album, gracing us with beautiful poetry — something that’s not unusual to her songs. Here are my favorite quotes from LDR’s new lyrics!

1. Love

“You’re part of the past, but now you’re the future“

“The world is yours and you can’t refuse it“

“It doesn’t matter if I’m not enough
For the future or the things to come
‘Cause I’m young and in love“

2. Lust for Life

“In these stolen moments
The world is mine”

“'Cause we’re the masters of our own fate
We’re the captains of our own souls“

“There’s no stopping now, green lights forever

3. 13 Beaches

“It hurts to love you, but I still love you“

“But you still can find me if you ask nicely”

4. Cherry

“Real love is like feeling no fear“

“A touch from your real love
Is like heaven taking the place of something evil”

“I fall to pieces when I’m with you“

5. White Mustang

“I didn’t call when I got your number
But I liked you a lot”

“You held me in your arms just a little too tight“

6. Summer Bummer

“It’s never too late
To be who you wanna be“

“It’s never too late
To leave if you wanna leave
Or to stay if you wanna stay“

“Is this love or lust or some game on repeat?“

7. Groupie Love

“It’s so sweet, swingin’ to the beat
When I know that you’re doing it all for me“

“It’s so sweet, pouring you a drink
And pretending that nothing means anything“

“Taking our dreams, turning them to things
It’s like magic, babe, isn’t life wonderful?“

8. In My Feelings

“Could it be that I fell for another loser”

“Get that cigarette smoke out of my face
You’ve been wasting my time“

“If you were me, and I was you
I’d get out of my way“

9. Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind

“I’d give it all away if you give me just one day to ask him one question”

“Critics can be so mean sometimes“

“That words could turn to birds and birds would send my thoughts your way“

10. God Bless America - And All Beautiful Women In It

“Take me as I am
Don’t see me for what I’m not”

“Even when I’m alone
I’m not lonely“

“May you stand proud and strong
Like Lady Liberty shining all night long”

“Even walking alone, I’m not worried
I feel your arms all around me”

11. When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing

“If we hold on to hope, we’ll have a happy ending”

“Oh my god, did it from loving you“

12. Beautiful People Beautiful Problems

“Long live our reign, long live our love”

“We get so tired and we complain
'Bout how it’s hard to live”

“Beautiful problems, God knows we’ve got them
But we gotta try
Every day and night”

13. Tomorrow Never Came

“I waited for you
In the spot you said to wait
In the city, on a park bench
In the middle of the pouring rain
'Cause I adored you”

“You said to meet me up there tomorrow
But tomorrow never came”

“'Cause if I had my way, you would always stay“

“Lennon and Yoko, we would play all day long
“Isn’t life crazy?”, I said now that I’m singing with Sean
Whoa”

14. Heroin

“The facts of life can sometimes make it hard to dream“

“My hope’s that you come back again
And tell me everything’s okay“

“I’m flying to the moon again, dreaming about heroin
And how it gave you everything and took your life away”

“I hope that I come back one day
To tell you that I really changed, baby”

15. Change

“Lately, I’ve been thinking it’s just someone else’s job to care
Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?”

“Trying to find the power in me to be faithful“

“There’s a change gonna come, I don’t know where or when
But whenever it does, we’ll be here for it“

16. Get Free

“Undoubtedly, that will for certain
Take the dead out of the sea and the darkness from the arts”

“I’m doing it for all of us who never got the chance
And all my birds of paradise who never got to fly at night”

“Sometimes it feels like I’ve got a war in my mind
I want to get off, but I keep riding the ride”

“I wanna move
Out of the black into the blue"

Shiro is the only true Black Paladin and no one else comes close

here’s why i’ll never accept anyone else as a permanent replacement for Shiro as Black Paladin:

  • the Black Lion chose Shiro. she had everyone else lined up in front of her, so if someone else (Keith/Lance/Allura/whoever) was a better fit for Black Paladin, Black would have chosen them from the beginning. she didn’t, because Shiro is the best fit for Black Paladin
  • Shiro could fly the Black Lion perfectly from the beginning. he never struggled to pilot her properly, like Keith did in S3, because he’s the true Black Paladin
  • Shiro managed to get the team to form Voltron immediately. even though they pretty much all gave up, Shiro was able to turn things around and get the team to form Voltron. he never struggled the way Keith did in S3 because he’s a born leader whose team follows him without hesitation - just like the Black Paladin needs to be
  • he nailed the nosedive exercise on his first try. even though Coran described it as an “expert level drill”, he was able to do it perfectly and fly Black with ease by bonding with her and looking through the Lion’s eyes
  • he did the Paladin Eye Glow. none of the other current Paladins have done this - even Pidge, who bonded closely with Green in 2x04. even Keith, whose Lion has repeatedly come to save him. Shiro did it TWICE
  • the only other character we’ve ever seen do the Paladin Eye Glow is King Alfor - the OG Red Paladin and the creator of the Lions
  • the Black Lion saved Shiro from the robeast in 1x03. and she saved him again in 2x01. and again on the astral plane when he fought Zarkon
  • Shiro spent the first two seasons fighting for the Black Lion. he refused to let anyone take her and he fought to get her back repeatedly - just like she fought for him and defended him
  • when Shiro went to bond with Black in 2x07, she immediately showed him her history and let him see her memories through her eyes - because she desperately wanted to bond with him
  • Shiro fought Zarkon in the astral plane for the Lion - and won. he understands what it means to be a Paladin better than Zarkon - the OG Black Paladin
  • he was able to use his connection with the Lion to lure Zarkon into a trap at the end of S2. and his lil smug face after he manages it? priceless
  • he brought Voltron back from a complete shutdown in the S2 finale. even though everyone else gave up, Shiro never did
  • he activated the Black Lion’s wings, unlocked her teleporting powers, and stole back the black bayard from Zarkon. and he did it by bonding closely with the Black Lion. and doing the Paladin eye glow AGAIN
  • if Shiro was only ever meant as a temporary Black Paladin, we wouldn’t have seen two seasons of him bonding with Black and being able to see through her eyes, use her wings, or defeat her original Paladin
  • if Shiro was only ever meant as a temporary Black Paladin then several key storylines and plot points from the first two seasons now make no sense or fall completely flat
  • if Keith is supposed to be the “true Black Paladin”, then we should have seen him bond with the Black Lion, see through her eyes, share her memories, and activate her wings. we didn’t because he’s not the true Black Paladin. instead we saw him struggle to even fly Black in a straight line, because she’s not the right Lion for him

the only true Black Paladin is Shiro

Shiro is the Paladin Black chose from the beginning; the Paladin she trusted and bonded with; the Paladin who was able to see through her eyes and unlock her powers. anyone else is just temporary. Shiro is coming back - and when he does, he’ll fly the Black Lion again. like he was meant to all along.

I owned a knife that could make you fly if you held it as if you were about to stab somebody with it. My dad took it away from me and hid it in his room, so I turned into a ninja and snuck in and got it back. I tried flying using the knife again, but somehow it teleported me to my grandmother’s house. She locked me in a cage and sacrificed the knife to Satan, and revealed herself to be Severus Snape instead of my grandma.

ok story time, i used to play DCUO in its early days which for those who don’t know is basically an MMORPG set in the dcu where you create a hero or villain and make your way up the hero ladder, and if you level up enough you end up being accepted into the justice league as an actual member

there are various locations you can visit, one of them being the watchtower where you can find the trinity in the middle of the map inside a dome you can’t visit unless you’ve actually become a justice leaguer. but you can still see them in there just… existing i guess (i don’t remember seeing the models even talk) so you’d constantly have other people gathering around and being interested in seeing what’s going on. one of those people was Xcalibersomething but we’ll call him XC. XC was this guy who had teamed up with me and a few other people for some quests because you finish things quicklier/easier when you team up with other random people, but out of the group, we were the last ones to leave so for the time being we had decided to stick together. we didn’t message each other all that much because the main idea was easy enough: you see something > you decide to kill it > i follow and help you kill it faster

at some point we visit the watchtower, go our separate ways for a while because that place is huge and you bet your ass i’m gonna fly around without actually doing anything, then just as i’m about to leave, he writes me in the chat:

<XC>: i think there’s a way to get in there
<me>: where?
<XC>: the room where superman, batman and ww are
<me>: oh i don’t think you can yet. hall of justice is locked for low levels
<XC>: no i can

now, i’m thinking “no you can’t” but i let him be because he’s going to realize soon enough you can’t actually find a way inside that room without meeting certain criteria. i won’t get worked up. i don’t know him either so maybe this is the most interesting thing he’s done this week. i do, however, decide to stick around a little longer

i see XC go as back as the map allows him and just fly straight into the glass (which for reference, flying in low levels… is not that fast. you get the effect of wind blowing past you but actually seeing it in third person is hilariously slow for the current circumstances). he stops. that’s expected, he can’t actually ram his way through. the game doesn’t work that way so i don’t expect him to–

<XC>: do you think the glass can break?
<me>: i really doubt that
<XC>: try with me

which i do. because i decided to stay so i may as well fly back and forth the map in an attempt to break a glass that can’t break. flying is fun, i’m having a dandy time. we keep at it for maybe one minute and a half, some people join us for a while without knowing why we’re doing this weird marathon thing, then i stop and write:

<me>: maybe we should go do some missions to level up (aka you aren’t breaking this glass i can’t believe you’re still at it let’s actually finish the game holy SHIT)
<XC>: no i really can’t do that
<me>: why not?
<XC>: he’s watching

okay… at this point i’m like he probably has a friend/sibling sitting next to him that he wants to impress with his super gaming skills, so i get it. we’ve all been there. i get it. trying to introduce a new game mechanic via strong belief and the power of imagination isn’t the way to go about it but i get the premise, you know?

he doesn’t ask me to start trying again, he just swoops away towards the dome as if he’s certain i’ll follow. i’ve officially joined a cult and he’s the leader. i can’t break his trust. i’m his second in command at this point. he expects me to be there in tow, together joined in his crusade against The Glass. i don’t have it in me to betray him, i won’t be the hal to his sinestro. so i follow. and i fly. and i get back and then i fly again. and this keeps happening for i’m certain more than seven minutes without any kind of communication or cease of efforts. i’ve put on music. i’m singing karaoke. i’m chilling. i’ve accepted my fate i’ll stay here for the rest of my life. but then it gets to the point it’s nearly 3am on a school night and i don’t have it in me anymore. i’m about to desert his ass as if he’s the guerillas and i’m missing my family. i write:

<me>: listen i really have to go. but it’s been fun!
<XC>: oh
<XC>: okay yeah. it was fun. thanks for trying to help
<me>: sure. can i just say something
<XC>: yep
<me>: none of my business but you can impress them a lot easier by actually leveling up and beating some bosses instead of this lol
<XC>: impress who?
<me>: whoever’s sitting next to you
<XC>: ?
<XC>: oooh no
<XC>: i meant batman
<XC>: he’s in there always watching. i want to make a good impression

i didn’t pick up the game for four months after that. and let me tell you. let me tell you. to this day, i still respect XC. batman’s in there. always watching. he just wanted to make a good impr

Chuckling sarcastically, Jimin held his phone up in front of your eyes. “Look, you’re precious husband just texted me. He seems really worried about you. Don’t let him wait, you shouldn’t be talking to an useless person like me, Y/N.”

Not glancing at his phone, you tried to reach out for his hand but stopped when you saw how he backed away from you. “No, wait Jimin! I’m sorry-”

“Why are you doing this, Y/N?”

“What am I doing, Jimin?”

“Every time we see each other, you say that it’s the last time you’ve spent time with me. Then, after a couple of days, you come back, lie down in my arms as if nothing had happened and make me the happiest person in the world. Y/N, you make me fly again and then in a flash, you slam me back onto the ground every single time..”

Sadly, you looked into his eyes. He looked hurt, disappointed and broken. Seeing him like that, you wanted to wrap your arms around his body and tell him that you were sorry, that it breaks your heart to see him hurt like that because of you and that you loved him more than he could ever imagine.

“I don’t want to hurt anymore. I don’t want to cry anymore because of you, Y/N. Don’t come to me anymore. Don’t come to me whenever you’re sad or whenever you need someone to sleep with, Y/N. I don’t want to be your replacement anymore..”

Closing your eyes, you took a deep breath. “Jimin, I love yo-”

Right before you could end your sentence, you heard someone clapping slowly. Turning your head to the sound, you locked your eyes with your husband and froze the minute you saw him approaching you both with a smirk plastered on his face.

Standing in front of you both, Taehyung glanced from you to Jimin, his hands now tucked into his pockets. “Wow, what a heartbreaking love story! I’m impressed!”

Not knowing what to say, you looked at Jimin and realized that he was looking at your husband with hateful eyes and a clenched jaw.

“Y/N,” hearing your husbands voice, you snapped your head towards him and a shiver went down your spine at the way he looked at you. “tell me, how is he in bed? Is he good? Better than I am? Or would you prefer us both together? Hm? Tell me.”

“Shut the fuck up, Taehyung!” you heard Jimin hiss through his gritted teeth.

Smirking again, Taehyung turned his head to his best friend. “Why? Do you feel uncomfortable? Poor Jiminie, let me tell you one thing. You’re missing out, my friend.”

You saw how Jimin clenched his hands beside his body. “What the fuck are you trying to say, Taehyung?! Just spit it out!”

Glancing at you once, Taehyung crossed his arms in front of his chest and clicked with his tongue. Turning his head back to his friend, he tilted his head slightly as he smirked at him and said the words that made you feel like you’ve been shot by a gun in the head.

“I must say, your wife is pretty good in bed too, my dear friend.”

Flug has to learn a lot about his new powers as a Dullahan~ The first thing is to summon his ‘horse’ but since he is a newbie and not that skilled, it turns out to be a black paper plane ❤

Flug named it Gale and it dislikes Black Hat~ So whenever he makes a dumb comment or treats Flug bad, Gale will not hesitate to fly into his eye~ (hehehe!) And since it comes back again every time he destroys it, there is nothing he can so~

Imagine you tried to rob a wizard's tower

The cold stone walls close in on you. There’s fresh, clean straw under you and an empty bucket in one corner. A torch burns resolutely in the hallway. You knew this was a stupid idea. One of the boys in your village convinced you that the wizard is a fraud, that his potions are sugar water and his magical talismans are useless bits of junk. The boy dared you to sneak into the wizard’s tower, steal something, and bring it back. You agreed, but mostly to shut him up. You’re not afraid of the wizard or his alleged power. There’s no such thing as magic, after all.

The wizard’s tower was just outside of the village, at the edge of the forest. If it had any kind of guards or defenders, you’d never seen them. You snuck in through a crack in the wall and looked through shelves of bones and crystals and things you couldn’t even identify, searching for something small enough to slip into your pocket. You were startled by a noise behind you, and even more startled when you turned to look at the source. A little humanlike figure, about the size of a pigeon, sat perched on a shelf and grinned at you. It spread out its batlike wings and said something in a language you’d never heard, a few syllables that echoed strangely in the small room. Everything went black, and when you woke up, you were in a cell.

So here you are, imprisoned. There’s a man looking at you through the barred door. He’s a short and slight, with a neatly trimmed beard. You’ve seen him before, hawking the wizard’s wares in the village market, all smiles and lofty promises as he peddled healing potions and fertility charms. He is not smiling now.

“Why did you invade my tower?” he asks. “Go on, let’s hear it.”

You’ve always assumed that he was actually the wizard’s assistant, or just a hireling. He looks nothing like you’ve always pictured wizards. He’s wearing a look of extreme annoyance and the kind of tunic and trousers that wouldn’t look out of place on the village innkeeper. You don’t know what you expected. Elaborate robes and a long gray beard. For some unknowable reason, you’re unwise enough to say so.

“The robes are only for ceremonial use,” he says. “They are dreadfully uncomfortable. I can’t be bothered to wear them all the time. You break into my home, and now you expect me to walk around draped in all that nonsense just to meet your expectations?”

Lost for words, you can only shake your head.

“And what about you?” he asks, crossing his arms. “Why are you here? I warn you, I won’t take pity on you no matter how heartrending your story is. Your mother’s dying from some horrible disease the healers have never seen before? Is it your sister? Are your crops failing? I rather liked the thief who said he needed a lucky charm so he could win enough gold to pay off his gambling debts. I can imagine how he got into trouble in the first place.”

“A boy in the village dared me,” you admit, and your voice comes out as little more than a whisper. It sounds pathetic even to you. Your heart is pounding and if you weren’t still on the ground, you’d probably collapse anyway. “I only said yes so he’d shut up. I didn’t even take anything. I swear, I’ll never come here again-” You trail off as the words die in your throat.

The wizard closes his eyes and sighs deeply. “Those charms I sell in the market? Those are mere trinkets,” he says. “Little things to keep the villagers happy. You have no idea what I can really do. If you ran off with something really dangerous, you could unleash horrors you can’t even imagine. I mean hellfire raining from the skies, cattle transforming into ravenous beasts. And that would be the least of it. You could end the world.”

“I’m sorry,” you try to say, but it just comes out as a squeaking noise.

He’s still glaring at you, but something in his expression actually seems to soften a little. “Still, you’re honest,” he says. “That’s a rare trait.”

“Are you going to let me go?” you ask.

The little winged creature is sitting on his shoulder. It chitters at you and draws one slender finger across its throat.

The wizard smiles coldly. “Eventually,” he says. “I can’t let intruders just run off on their merry way. You might decide to pay me a return visit. Or tell someone that I’m soft on thievery.” He pulls a bottle out of his pocket and holds it up to the bars. It’s clear glass, with a cork trapping some clear reddish liquid inside. “Here’s the deal. Drink this, endure what’s going to happen to you, and then you can go. Don’t drink it, and you’ll stay locked in this cell forever or until I find another use for you and all those delightful organs of yours. You would not believe what you can do with a human spleen.”

You hesitate. “Endure” is a very scary word, considering your current situation. But he did promise to let you go, and whatever that potion does can’t be worse than staying locked up forever. At least, you hope not.

The potion bottle clinks against cold iron as you pull it through the bars.. It’s heavier than it looks. “What is it?” you ask, studying the contents. “What’s going to happen to me if I drink this?”

“And ruin the surprise? It will hurt,” he says. “It won’t kill you. If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t have bothered with the cell or dangling the thought of freedom out in front of you. I’m not that sadistic. Well, I am. But only sometimes.”

It’s still not very reassuring, but what he’s saying makes sense. He hasn’t hurt you so far, besides locking you up. And to be honest, taking his offer is the best option you have available. “Okay,” you say. “I’ll drink it. And then do you swear by the Light that you’ll let me go?”

The wizard is quiet for a moment. “The Light and I are not on particularly good terms,” he says. “But if it puts you more at ease, I swear by the Light that I’ll release you alive and unharmed.”

Somehow, it doesn’t put you at ease at all. But you believe him.

You try to open the potion bottle. The cork’s wedged in tightly and your hands are shaking too hard to pull it out. The little winged creature flutters off the wizard’s shoulder, flies right through the door, and lands beside you. Its agile fingers work the cork out easily, and the creature holds the bottle out to you expectantly. The potion smells like herbs and something you can’t quite identify.

“My familiar will have to stay here to keep you company,” says the wizard. “I can see through its eyes, and it is rather stronger than it appears. I’d advise against trying anything. Now, drink that so I can get back to work.”

Closing your eyes, you swallow the bottle’s contents. It tastes overly sweet and your throat tingles afterwards. You’re tingling all over, actually, and you can feel something shifting deep inside of you. There’s a twinge of pain deep in your belly. “What did I just drink?” you ask, trying to fight off a feeling of impending doom. “What’s happening to me?”

The wizard’s already setting off down the hallway. “You’ll see,” is all he says.

***

The familiar can’t seem to sit still. It paces up and down the length of your cell, occasionally flying out through the walls and back again. Whenever you try the walls they’re solid rock; the familiar must be able to pass through them magically. Once, you get up to try the door but the familiar just chitters at you menacingly. You sit back down and try to ignore the growing ache in your belly.

It started out as a mild annoyance, so slight you thought you were imagining it. Now it feels like someone’s punched you in the belly; not hard, but it hurts enough to be distracting. It feels like hours have passed but aside from the stomachache, nothing else seems to be happening to you. Maybe the potion really was sugar water after all. Or maybe it just didn’t work. You hope it didn’t work. Then the wizard’ll have to let you go just like he promised, right?

Your clothes are getting tighter around your middle. That’s odd. As you reach down to put a hand on your stomach, an icy rush of panic fills you. Your belly’s growing. It’s slow at first, but it soon starts growing faster. Eventually you have to strip out of your clothes just to make room for your new bulk. Once, a woman in the village gave birth to twins, and you’re bigger now than she ever was. You sit with your back against the cold stone wall and watch as you grow bigger and bigger, pinned beneath your own growing belly. Whatever’s inside you, it’s so heavy that you’re not sure you could stand up if you tried to. You run your hands over your belly, oddly fascinated by the feeling of it under your fingers. Your curiosity almost overcomes the fear.

Something slick is running out of you and down your legs to pool in the straw bedding. You wonder what’s inside you, and if it’s close to being born. Some kind of creature? You’ve heard that pregnant women can feel their babies moving, but you don’t feel anything besides a steadily growing weight. So maybe it’s not a creature.

That’s almost comforting. You’ve been imagining all kinds of horrible scenarios. Now you don’t need to worry that there’s some sort of demon beast about to claw its way out of you. Well, you weren’t worried about that before. You’re a little worried now.

All at once you feel a rush of fluid and some immense weight slipping into your passage. All your other thoughts vanish. There’s something inside you and you need to get it out, that’s all you know. You push, but you feel like the thing inside you is barely moving at all. You whimper in pain as you push harder, and you think you can feel it just barely inching its way down your passage.

You can feel your skin bulge outwards as the thing moves downwards one agonizing push at a time. The wizard said it would hurt, but this is so much worse than you feared. You feel tears streaming down your face as you try to force the thing out. You can feel it straining for release at your entrance. It’s barely half out and it’s already stretching you impossibly wide. By the Light, it feels like you’re going to split open. But you don’t, and you watch dumbfounded as an egg slides out of you.

An egg. You’re being held prisoner by a sadistic wizard, and he’s forcing you to lay eggs. It would be almost funny if you weren’t in so much pain right now. You let out a groan as another one enters your passage, begging you to squeeze it out. Again, you start to push, and again, you feel like the egg is barely moving at all. You scream, but it dissolves into helpless sobbing.

This is impossible. That first egg felt bigger than anything you could possibly squeeze out, and who knows how many more you have inside you? The wizard said he’d release you “eventually”. What does that even mean? How long does he expect to keep you here? Hours? Days? Weeks?

The familiar picks up your egg and flies out of the cell with it, apparently having no trouble carrying an object bigger than itself. You wonder where they’re going, what the wizard intends for these eggs. But then you need to push again and the effort drives everything else out of your mind.

The second doesn’t come much easier, but after another exhausting ordeal an egg drops out of you and onto the straw below. And, again, the familiar scoops it up and flies off with it to who knows where. You feel a third egg enter your passage. Then a fourth, a fifth. You’re losing count. All you can do is keep laying eggs and pray that there’s an end in sight.

They start coming faster and faster. After you birth each egg you barely have time to catch your breath before the next one starts working its way out. You barely noticed it through the haze of pain but now you realize that your belly hasn’t been shrinking. In fact, it’s growing. New eggs are forming inside you faster than you can push them out.

A horrible thought occurs to you.

“When I lay them all, that’s it?” you ask the familiar, between gasps. “He’ll let me go?”

The familiar nods excitedly.

“But-” You thought you were out of tears but now you can feel more welling up. You just keep growing more. You’ve been tricked. The wizard lied. He’s never going to let you go. You’ll just stay here in this cell forever, spewing out eggs until you die, wondering when the tide will finally stop. Your throat’s already hoarse, but you scream as another egg starts to slide down your passage.

***

You cry in relief when you notice that your belly is finally shrinking. By the end, the eggs just slide out of you with no resistance; you couldn’t stop them even if you wanted to. Your hole is stretched beyond recognition and every part of you hurts. You lie there in the straw, too spent to move. “Please, let it be over,” you whisper. You’ll never steal anything ever again. You’ll go to the Chapel of the Light every Sun’s Day and pray for forgiveness. You’ll kill the bastard who dared you to come here in the first place.

The wizard steps into view in the hallway as his familiar carries the last egg away. “Normally I give my guests a second or third dose of the ovigenesis potion,” he says, by way of greeting. “But, well, you were honest with me. If you like, you can have this instead.”

The potion in his hands now is one you recognize. It’s one of the milky-pink healing potions he sells in the marketplace. He offers it to you and you drink it down without an argument. It takes effect almost instantly. Your pain fades and you can feel your poor, abused muscles repairing themselves. In a few minutes you feel almost as good as new. Almost.

You were too exhausted to realize that you’re still naked. Naked in front of a strange man who has you locked in a cell. Reflexively, you cover yourself.

The wizard chuckles a little. “I can see through my familiar’s eyes, remember? I’ve seen all you have to offer and I have no prurient interest in your body. To me, you’re just a source of raw materials.”

You really don’t like the way he says that. Your hands stay where they are and you look over at your discarded clothing. Your discarded, wet clothing. Ugh.

“I can clean the…assorted fluids out of your clothes. You know, with magic.” He mutters something and waves his hands. The familiar neatly folds your clothes and lays them on a dry patch of straw. “There we go. Do you have any other pressing needs? A glass of water, perhaps?”

You answer no. Actually, you’d love a cold drink of water right now but besides the healing potion, you’re not sure you’d feel safe drinking anything he might offer you.

The wizard shrugs. “As I promised, you’re alive and unharmed. Mostly unharmed, at least. My healing potion will take care of that. I’m sure you can feel it working already. When you’ve recovered, you can leave.” He turns and walks off into the darkened hallways.

Strength returns to your body and your poor, abused hole even starts to close up. When you feel confident that you can stand without falling over, you dress yourself and follow the chittering familiar out through the wizard’s dungeons. You head out through the tower’s front doors and into the night. Outside, the breeze smells sweeter than the finest perfume. You stagger home and collapse into your bed, sleeping soundly until well into the afternoon.

***

You never go near the tower again. The village boy shows up at your house the next day and asks what happened. You’re tempted to punch him, but you don’t have the strength. Instead, you tell him to fuck off as viciously as you can manage. He doesn’t bother you again.

But it doesn’t quite end there. You try to avoid the wizard’s stall on market days but somehow he’s always right in your path, and he always greets you with a wide smile and a cheerful “Well, if it isn’t my favorite customer!” Sometimes, he tries to offer you a very familiar red potion. Your heart stops when you see it, but then he gives you a wink and slips the bottle back into some hidden pocket.

Lately he’s been selling “dragon’s egg” potions and carved amulets. Whenever you see them set out and glinting in the sunlight, you ache somewhere deep inside. You’re sure those eggs didn’t come out of any dragon, but you can never work up the nerve to ask.

You develop a profound sense of appreciation for chickens and egg-laying creatures of all kinds. You can never look at an omelette the same way again.

And it turns out that the potion never truly wore off. Once every few months, you’re awakened in the middle of the night by a sharp pain in your abdomen. The wizard’s familiar swoops in as you push a giant egg out of yourself, cackling to itself as it watches you strain. Laying the egg is always worse than you remember; every push feels useless, like the egg’s trying to cling to your insides out of sheer spite. Eventually it crowns and then slides out, leaving a void where your insides were stretched around it.

Every time, you wonder if this egg will really be the last one. Every time, you ask the familiar to tell the wizard you’re sorry, you never meant any harm, and can he fix what the potion did to you?

The familiar just grins at you and flies off into the night, holding your newborn egg in its arms.

…Did we just scale to the top of a mountain, and fly back home again?
