Can you recommend some good female musicians from the 60s and 70s?
cher, janis joplin (her solo stuff and also her work with big brother & the holding company), grace slick (+jefferson airplane), gayle mccormick (+smith, best known for their hit cover of “baby it’s you”), mary travers (+ peter, paul & mary), aretha franklin, dusty springfield, lulu, joni mitchell, judy collins, joan baez, mary hopkin, sandie shaw, dionne warwick, mary wells, sandy denny, linda ronstadt, bobbie gentry, tina turner, etta james, cass elliot (+the mamas & the papas). the yé-yé music genre had lots of female singers. my favorites are france gall, françoise hardy, sylvie vartan, and sheila.
there are also lots of girl groups! the shangri-las are my favorites, but i also really like honey ltd., the ronettes, the supremes, the marvelettes, and martha & the vandellas. check out the pleasure seekers and goldie and the gingerbreads, two of the first all-female rock bands to gain media recognition!
the runaways (one of my favorite bands of all time), fanny, donna summer, suzi quatro (she was a member of the pleasure seekers, mentioned above), dolly parton, carly simon, carole king, stevie nicks (+buckingham nicks, fleetwood mac), karen carpenter (+the carpenters), debbie harry (+blondie), patti smith, kate bush, pat benatar, roberta flack, heart.
