YA Books With Queer Girls

This maaay be stemming from anger, as all my best ideas are, but I figured it might help someone find a really awesome book, and so I shall be your unofficial librarian for a sec.

I can vouch for all of these books; yes, some are better than others (I mean, yes, Of Fire and Stars has an overly simple plot), but they are all very much enjoyable, especially if you’re not in constantly book-reviewer mode like I am whenever I read.

Also, I’m focusing this specially on books with queer girls, because I feel like YA has a bit of a problem with wlw. They tend to fly majorly under the radar, while books like Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda and Carry On get majorly hyped. Don’t get me wrong, I love both those books to bits, but still. I want to read all the books about girls who love girls.

-

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman: I need to put on of my all-time fav books here, first, don’t I? But, seriously, this book is fucking fantastic, and I love it to bits. It’s got all the amazing things: podcasts, nerdy people being nerdy, geeking out over sci-fi, it’s fantastic. Bisexual female MC/narrator + demisexual male MC + gay male side character + gay female minor character.

When The Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore: Guys. GUYS. This book is gorgeous. One of the most beautiful books I’ve read in a long time. Anna-Marie McLemore is already one of my top ten favorite writers and she’s only written two books, and this…I love this book and I want everyone to read this amazing book SO JUST GO READ IT, OKAY? AND it’s about QPOC, AND it very much respects and embraces true magical realism, AND the author is literally the sweetest person ever. Queer female MC + trans male MC.

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova: This book is like a mix of Alice in Wonderland and a crazy fever dream. BUT IN A GOOD WAY. And can I mention the worldbuilding??? I’m in love with it. Bisexual female MC + queer female MC

Everything Leads to You by Nina Lacour: THIS BOOK IS FREAKIN’ ADORABLE. I mean, it’s about romance and movies and mysteries and it has a beautifully built slowburn romance and everyone is adorable and the romance is adorable and just ALL THE YES. Gay female MC + Gay female MC

Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee: This book is all about the internet! I mean, if you exist on a creative plain of the internet, you’ll see yourself in this book. PLUS all the amazing and totally important conversations about asexuality. Asexual romantic female MC.

Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert: I am SO ANGRY about how much this book has flown under the radar, because it’s amazing and so important and it addresses so many amazing things, and I just…Brandy Colbert writes the most fantastically realistic, flawed characters and I love it. Bisexual female MC + queer female side character.

Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst: I need to mention the cover of this book, first, because OH THE GORGEOUSNESS. Also, can I say NON-HOMOPHOBIC FANTASY WORLD??? Gay female MC + gay female MC

Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, and Brooke A. Allen: I shriek about this graphic novel/s every single time someone asks for a comic recommendation. It’s ridiculous in the best way and lighthearted and has the most lovable characters and can I mention the cast is ENTIRELY FEMALE? Gay female MC + Gay female MC + Trans female MC

As I Descended by Robin Talley: Gay modern day Macbeth retelling with ghosts. Want to hear that again? LESBIAN MACBETH. WHY HAVEN’T YOU READ THIS ALREADY? Gay female MC + Gay female MC

10 Things I Can See From Here by Carrie Mac: Okay, yes, this book has an awful cover but don’t let that sway you because I love this book to pieces. For one, it’s set in Vancouver, and I love Vancouver, and also it has probably one of the most realistic portrayals of anxiety I’ve ever read, AND THAT ANXIETY DOESN’T GET CURED WITH ROMANCE. Gay female MC + Gay female side character

The Cursed Queen by Sarah Fine: Okay, yes, this is a sequel, but I had to add it to the list because I’m in love with this series and this world and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. It’s gloriously stabby. Bisexual female MC + queer female MC

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde: This book is a love letter to fandom and nerd culture and everything, AND I LOVE IT TO PIECES. I’m so, so happy this book is getting so much hype because it stands up to the hype and crushes it and I just love it, okay?? Also, I love all the characters. ALL OF THEM. They’re so fantastically written and adorable and I REALLY, REALLY LOVE THEM. Bisexual female MC + Queer female side character.

Get It Together, Delilah/The Flywheel by Erin Gough: It’s set in a bakery/cafe, which is enough to get my heart beating, but this book is just straight-up adorable. Also, if you don’t think I’m making panna cotta gelato the first chance I get YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN. Gay female MC + Gay female MC.

BONUS: These books don’t have queer girls as MCs, but they do have queer girls and are just overall fantastic. The Upside of Unrequited has a sideplot about the MC’s gay sister and her pansexual girlfriend, plus the most adorable moms in YA, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue has a female character whom I’m like 99% sure is asexual, A Tyranny of Petticoats has a couple of stories that are about queer girls, as does Meet Cute

Also, did I miss any important books??? Tell me if I did because I want to know about ALL THE BOOKS with queer girls.

reasons to watch the bold type

(i know this has been done before, but seriously…)

  • the three main characters are young women — best friends who work at a magazine called scarlet
  • main character #1 — kat edison: black girl magic, confident af, spontaneous af, takes nobody’s crap. she literally took pictures of guys’ nipples (with permission ofc) and posted them on twitter as a sassy response to their shitty ‘no nipple’ policy. also, she’s questioning her sexuality.
    - memorable quote: “i’m going to destroy the patriarchy.”
  • main character #2 — sutton brady: supportive bean (!!!), ambitious and stubborn and she knows her worth, demands respect and to be treated fairly when she works.
    - memorable quote: “i can screw whoever i want!”
  • main character #3 — jane sloan: she’s more reserved than the other two, but kicks ass nonetheless. she’s wrote articles on gender-neutral fashion, not having had an orgasm and sexual assault.

also:

  • adena el-amin: proud muslim lesbian, literally a precious sunflower and activist.
  • jacqueline carlyle: the main characters’ boss who crushes the ‘mean female boss’ stereotype, because she genuinely cares about her employees and gives them valuable advice. she shows that a woman can be strong and kind at the same time.
  • basically, there are so many well-rounded and amazing female characters on this show
  • DID I MENTION THE INTERRACIAL, BEAUTIFUL WLW SHIP??? (that is also written realistically, might i add.)
  • THERE ARE SO MANY HILARIOUS MOMENTS. and a lot of them are some that many people would find relatable in some way.
  • A+ acting
  • the show covers countless important issues, such as: breast cancer, islamophobia, sexual assault, sexism etc.
bts reacts: you can’t sleep because you’re cold

@esu333 asked: can you do a reaction to bts waking up in the middle of the night to their s/o shaking cause they’re too cold?

note: i want to keep these gender neutral, so if i use a female pronoun, please tell me so i can correct it! :)

yoongi: he’d feel you restlessly turning next to him in discomfort, and show his way of caring and helping extremely discreetly, by slowly and gently shrugging the covers off of himself, and in a still half-asleep daze would fold them over onto you instead. the smallest of things, but it made the biggest difference.

“it’s nothing- i’m fine, it’s just a little cold, that’s all-” there’d be an immediate reaction from him, going to wrap his arms around you as a first instinct to keep you warm. “no, i can promise you, i’m fine-”

“no, you’re cold, and i’m going to fix that. you just lay here, close your eyes. think warm thoughts-“

“warm thoughts?” what exactly ‘warm thoughts’ were, was not really certain.

“yes, warm thoughts. and i’ll just be here for if you need me to get you anything, okay?”

namjoon: there’d be a lot of gentle, “are you okay?” and “are you sure, because you really don’t seem like it.” he’d know something was up, but he wouldn’t realize that it was because you were cold until he touched your hands. “___, you’re freezing- is that what’s wrong?” he’d bunch the covers around you, so you’re practically cocooned in them. “see, it’s easily fixed.”

seokjin: “you should have said something, ___! i would have gotten a thicker sheet or something!” his voice would be slightly croaky, what with it being ridiculously early hours in the morning, but he had felt you moving beside him, and that had woken him up. “don’t worry- you just stay here, and i’ll take care of it.” despite your protests, he’d get out of bed and get something to help it- whether it be another blanket, a hot drink, or even just one of his hoodies.

“well, for a start, you’re shaking- are you cold?” he asked, but he already knew the answer. “here, you take this- you need it more than i do. tell me if you need anything else, okay? don’t go freezing on me.”

taehyung: “you’re cold? why didn’t you just tell me?” he’d shuffle closer, and gesture for you to move slightly, so he could wrap his arms around you from behind. “there. can’t have you being cold, can we?” once he was satisfied with the fact that you were now settled and asleep, he’d quietly whisper to himself, “y’know, this is nice. i wouldn’t mind it being like this all the time.”

I’ve seen a lot of posts on my dash about how sexualized the female characters costumes in Boku no Hero Academia are and I kind of want to give my five cents on the issue. Though I honestly disagree with most of the posts I see on my dash and I think the designs do a really good job of creating an aesthetically pleasing and fun to look at costumes, that’s not what this post is about. This post is about how it’s not just the female characters in the show that are oversexualized, it’s all of them.

The argument that I need to address first is the one that’s most prominent, and that’s Momo Yaoyorozu and Eijiro Kirishiama:

Everyone knows Momo’s quirt is Creation which “allows her to produce different objects, such as weapons and tools, from any exposed part of her body.” Key word: exposed. Yes, she’s showing a lot of skin but it’s because of what her quirk is. Sure, you can call this a poor argument, you can that she can still have some parts of her body covered up and only have one exposed area. And perhaps you’re right. But I think it’s important to compare her to Kirishima because his power has nothing to do with showing skin in the slightest:

Here we have Momo’s costumes vs. Kirishima’s costume I think it’s easy to argue that both of them are showing a fair amount of skin. And before you cut me off saying that Momo’s legs are exposed while Kirishima’s aren’t, I know, I can see that. That doesn’t make my argument less valid. They’re still showing more skin than they need to for no reason other than for you to see it. Kirishima is a fifteen year old boy but he has a six pack of abs and ripped muscles. Momo is a fifteen year old girl with huge tits and a tiny waist. See what I’m getting at? If you’re going to say that the female characters of BNHA are over sexualized and it’s only for the pleasure of gross fanboys, why are you ignoring the obvious oversexualization of the male characters too?

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that Uraraka’s costume is sexualized because of how tight it is (which I completely disagree with, but again that’s not the point I’m making):

When… um….

I don’t know if you guys know how fabric works. But that’s not how it works.

No one looks like that. Of course no one looks like that. And I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be upset by how the people in this show are portrayed (you’re more than free to be), I just think you should take a step back and realize that this isn’t an issue only pertaining to female characters. If you’re going to say that Momo’s outfit is showing way too much skin and it makes you feel bad about how your body looks, how about raising a glass to all the boys out there who don’t have abs for days like Kirishima.

Take a look at any super hero since super heroes have become a thing: Captain America, Black Widow, Spiderman, fuck it even He-Man, the list goes on; all of them are in skin tight clothes that shows off their curves because that’s how super heroes have always been portrayed: as perfect humans. That’s why they have perfect bodies and perfect muscles and the artists/designers show them off. Not to even mention the physical advantage that a tight costume vs. a baggy costume gives when kicking bad guy’s assses (which is an entire different rant).

In conclusion, all I’m saying is that the costume designs are only paying homage to the heroes that have come before them and, furthermore, whether or not you think the female characters are sexualized or not, the male characters are just as bad. It isn’t an issue of gender, it’s an issue of how superheroes in any form of media are designed. And, personally, I have no issue with it. In my opinion the costumes look good, they’re diverse, well designed, and aesthetically pleasing.

Go fuck yourself useless diaper boy.

✒ Is the Fox personal bodyguard a male or female?

The Fox is a lady…? To be honest, I didn’t have a gender in mind when I design the fox, so feel free to interpret it anyway you like :)

Will we be seeing any more new faces in the animal court?

There will be other minor characters, such as other soldiers, maids, butlers, gardeners and royal members. And of course the King and Queen of the Goose and Swan kingdom. However majority of the story will still focus on the core 7 below.

I have a question for you. If Marine Le Pen, the president of the National Front (FN), will become the new president of France (I don't believe that will be possible, but we can expect at a surprise) you'll still write about her as the first woman president of France or you'll make an exception because she's an extremist and avoid mentioning her?

Oof. That’s a tough one. I don’t have a clear-cut set of rules – generally speaking, though, I avoid hot-button politics. Didn’t cover Clinton or Conway or Warren, wouldn’t cover Le Pen.

That said, it’s not like I’ve followed that rule 100%. I covered Ilhan Omar, a Muslim Somali-American elected to public office. I covered a handful of modern-day female firsts whose politics I didn’t agree with (although I didn’t realize it at the time): the first female mayor of Rome and the first female governor of Tokyo.

I’ve gradually realized that some people have an expectation of neutrality on RP’s part, or a tit-for-tat balance – that I would cover a conservative figure for every liberal one. But I’m not impartial. I’m an artist. My politics are pretty easy to figure out, I think. I cover people that I don’t personally like, but they’re people that I find interesting. I find them interesting usually because there’s space and time from the events of their lives. That’s not the case with folk like Le Pen.

At this point in my life, I am unwilling to spend time making art that I find personally distasteful, out of some sense of fairness. If I wanted to do that, I’d have stayed in the CG animation industry and gotten paid for it. Life’s too short.

So yeah, that’s my measured, public response. My asked-at-a-party response would likely involve a lot more profanity.

Sana appreciation post Go!

Where do I even begin

Ok Minatozaki Sana is a straight up visual masterpiece. She is so beautiful. Have you seen Sana’s eyes?! God I could talk for years about how beautiful and kind her eyes are. She conveys so much love and pure goodness through a single gaze she’s so mesmerising

But oh my god her personality, Sana is an angel y'all she’s such a sweetheart. She’s an adorably affectionate human and she always shows support by hugging her members she just really likes hugs and kisses she’s so precious.

SHE JUST REALLY LOVES HER MEMBERS AND LOVES SHOWING THEM AFFECTION

Get you a girl that supports you like Sana does I’m serious. She’s so kind and genuine, you know that one video of her and a female fan, I’m crygin over how sweet Sana was god I wish that were me. You can tell that she really cares about Onces, she’s such a pure soul. Here’s a video, don’t mind that the background music is BTS’s cover of Beautiful, just mute the vid if you like

ALSO, Sana is an adorable goofball. she’s so playful and she always tries to spread happiness. YES she’s also clumsy but honestly that just makes her fifteen times more adorable

AND ANOTHER THIng, Sana’s intelligence gets overlooked at lot because she’s not ‘conventionally’ smart and she says weird things all the time. L I S T E N  my girl is such a deep and emotional thinker, her intelligence is so unique and beautiful and she actually thinks and considers things a lot and she is so emotionally smart, DON’T SLEEP ON MINATOZAKI ‘GENIUS’ SANA

DO I NEED TO MENTION HER TALENT, honestly I think Sana’s vocals get overlooked a lot. She’s improved so much recently, and she has such a beautiful high range. DID YOU HEAR HER NOTE AT THE END OF THREE TIMES A DAY???? DID YOU???? BEAUTIFUL THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL. MY GIRL WENT FROM HAVING NOT A LOT OF LINES TO BEING GIVEN CHORUSES IN TWO TITLE TRACKS. Q U E E N

AND HER DANCING UM HELLO. AmaZINg! We all know Mina and Momo are the key dancers, but in terms of ranking Sana is right behind them and just as talented in her own right. She is a performer and she kills it on stage.

Let’s Talk about the Wonder Woman Trailer

OK…I’m already PISSED at the way people are responding to the TRAILER.  Like the movie is not even out yet and its getting bad hype…why?  Because apparently it isn’t feminist.  Like let’s break this down into why this movie is amazing AND feminist:

1) The obvious…THIS IS A FEMALE DRIVEN SUPERHERO MOVIE DIRECTED BY A WOMAN.  THE FIRST OF ITS KIND.  Now that I’ve covered that…

2) Its Wonder Woman’s origin showing her on an island of women warriors run by women who are all strong and fierce and intelligent.  I saw that much from the trailer.  They train and fight like men, even better than men, and their main weapon can only be wielded by the fiercest warrior, who isn’t a man.

3) Wonder Woman chooses to leave her island to save her people and help the world as a whole.  I’ve heard that she just ‘follows the man like a puppy’ but…when?  Like in the trailer we see Steve crash on the island I believe during WWI which means that a pilot would 99% of the time be a man.  And he comes to the island and tells her that bad shit is coming that will mostly likely kill her people, who she one day will rule over, and destroy everything she loves.  WHO WOULD NOT LEAVE TO GO HELP SAVE THEIR PEOPLE?  And she kind of has to go with Steve since he is her only link to the outside world, the only one who can help her.  Her decision is not based on some ‘O I love him the minute I see him I must go and become a good little housewife’ its based on the knowledge that her land and people are being threatened and she will save them.

4) She is NOT a damsel in distress.  She wasn’t one in Batman v Superman and she certainly doesn’t look like one now.  She looks like she is going in to kick ass and save her people.  I’m sure at some point in the film we will see one of those ‘haha a little lady thinks she can fight’ moments but you know what? She is going to fight them and kick their asses.

5) This movie is full of men at one point and I believe, based solely on the trailer, Diana is going to outshine them all, including Steve.  Even if they rush a romance just because its in the comics and is canon I think it will just show how strong she is because he will most likely die in the movie and drive her to do more, to continue helping the world as a heroine, turning the ‘woman dies to drive man’s plot’ on its head which I love to see because it is a rarity.

Sorry for the rant but I’m so excited for this movie and I don’t want it ruined already by people who can’t let DC/superhero fans, have anything nice.

(especially if you’re an OBGYN) You’re essentially telling a patient that your personal views are more important than their right to their own body and their ability to make decisions concerning their body.

As medical professionals, it is not our place to tell a patient what to do, only advise based on medical knowledge! We are there to diagnose and to advise and then to treat if the patient consents.

Think of it this way: you tell a patient that they should get treatment for their Type II Diabetes. You give them information on T2D such as stats, general facts, various treatment options, and anything else that is relevant or that your patient asks for. Your personal views say “treat with this and do this and this on the side to help control the disease” and you really want your patient to take whichever drug you think is best, but your patient, for their own reasons, says “no, I will not seek medical treatment for this condition”. All you can do as the attending physician is accept this and move on because you cannot force a treatment (or any medical procedure!) on a patient - hint, hint it’s unethical to do that.

anonymous asked:

Why do you regret your sorority?

for one i was not prepared enough for it. i told people this: “i am a novice fishkeeper with not much experience. i’m getting a 20g tank. please give me ideas of what to put in it.”

nearly everyone suggested a sorority, on both instagram and a few forums. i asked about the risks bc it’s common knowledge bettas are aggressive and they all assured me it wouldn’t be a problem

but it was a problem, and many fish died. if you look through my tagged #betta sorority posts, of those fish, only 5 are still alive, and only 1 is still in my fish room (the rest were rehomed so that they could be kept in 10g+ solitary tanks

sororities cause stress which weakens the immune system and can cause outbreaks of ich, columnaris, and other illnesses that live in the tank water anyways. a healthy, stress free fish has a much lower chance of contracting those because they have a strong immune system.

don’t get me wrong, i love my girls, but i cannot ethically keep them housed together any longer. all girls are now separated and i will do everything in my power to prevent others from attempting such an inhumane practice.

i don’t hate people who have sororities but look… even huge, thickly planted ones can fail. i saw someone with a 100g sorority, 5 females, ridiculously well planted. lasted three years and then the owner came home to find two of the bettas floating on the top, dead and covered in wounds.

sororities do not benefit the fish in any way, and anyone who says otherwise is lying unless they can show me concrete, hard proof (not just a few isolated instances)

sororities are purely for human ego and ego should NEVER be more important than the best interests of the fish.

Why Space Marines need to be male

(in this I use Adeptus Astartes and Marines/ Space Marines basically interchangably, mainly for the purposes of readability, so assume I’m talking about the same thing unless I state otherwise)

I mentioned, briefly, in a response to a reader letter in the most recent White Dwarf, that I had a reason for why I think there shouldn’t be female Space Marines. Just so we’re totally clear by ‘Space Marine’ I mean specifically Warhammer 40,000’s Adeptus Astartes, I’m not saying Pvt. Vasquez or Samus or whomever shouldn’t exist. I think it is very important that the Adeptus Astartes should be male, and it isn’t anything to do with the game’s fictional reason for why this is so.

In 40k, only men get to be Space Marines, or rather, only boys. They are taken at a young age, in pre- or early puberty, and physically and mentally made into killing machines. The fiction justifies why it’s only boys that get taken because of some vague notion of the process requiring male hormonal development, which one assumes to mean high testosterone, which is some waffle. I don’t think it’s the strongest reason to restrict Marines to one gender, because HRT is a thing (I’m not really prepared to get into a discussion about trans men as space marines, that’s not what this piece is about so I’ll have to leave that I’m afraid, but that’s definitely something I’d like to hear a take on) but again, it’s not the direct, in-fiction reason to keep the Astartes male that I support, it’s broader than that.

It essentially boils down to what the Space Marines are, what they mean, and what exact genre of fiction Warhammer 40k actually is. In the narrative, of course, the Space Marines are the Emperor’s Angels of Death, his will made manifest, humanity’s finest. They are portrayed as the ultimate soldiers in a galaxy constantly at war, as heroes to all, defenders of humanity. The process to actually become a Space Marine is arduous and long, but if one were to become a Space Marine it would prove that yes, you are one of the best fighters humanity has to offer. Without question.

It’s when you actually analyse what that actually means, what being a Space Marine means, that I hope my reasoning becomes a little bit clearer. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of trying to teach a group of ten year old boys who’ve never seen warfare, who’ve never been affected by it or grown mature enough to comprehend the horror of it, I highly recommend it. Not because you’ll really get anywhere. It’ll be a troubling and haunting experience for you, actually. I covered the First World War with a group of Year 5 boys a couple of years ago, as a coda to us finishing Micheal Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful together. The book is quite damning about the way soldiers were treated by their own country during the war, about how being in a total war situation can affect and damage a young person’s mind, how it can make them do things they wouldn’t dream of doing elsewhere. I confess, I got very emotional at the book’s climax. I take the horror of the First World War very, very seriously (I covered it in my Battlefield 1 review). I consider it an appalling waste of life, a grotesque display of colonialism and imperialist chest-thumping on all sides. I was quite shocked, perhaps naively so, that the boys I was working with didn’t see it that way. After going over what life in the trenches was like, the sheer number of casualties lost over a matter of inches of ground, the complete inability of command structures to adopt strategies that would have mitigated said loss of life until the very end of the war (just to be clear, I did not try to impose my own opinion of why this was on the children; I explained to them how new this form of warfare was and left them to form their own conclusions), several of the boys still seemed quite excited by the idea of it all, of going over the top and firing artillery and what have you. I realised, of course, that they were mapping what we’d discussed onto what they knew about warfare and violence, which is to say the games they played and the films they watched. Even though I was trying to show them that war, perhaps, was not a heroic and exciting affair, they couldn’t see it that way. They even saw death in war as some kind of noble thing, because thats the way they’d seen in on screen. Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori’ indeed.

Space Marines represent this kind of thinking, intentionally so. They are the epitome of the uncritical approach to analysing warfare, all glory, no downside. The idea that one might get to fight, and be really good at it, and do it all the time is a neat idea if you only know about war as this cool thing from video games and movies. The idea of the Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine works as a criticism of how we teach boys about war, how we introduce them to it and how casually they absorb the imagery of it, getting uncritically excited about tanks and guns and bombs. Space Marines, fundamentally, are little boys who never really grow up, robbed of a genuine adulthood to instead fight with their mates, forever, until they die, without having to worry about why or who they’re fighting. And that’s why I think its important that Space Marines be male. Because if there were female Marines, this implicit criticism of boys and war wouldn’t be as effective. Thats not to say that I think there aren’t girls who get excited by this kind of thing, there are, but societally we don’t push it on them the same way. We don’t guide them, unconsciously, to this kind of fascination in the same way we do boys because ‘girls stuff’ isn’t about being a hero and fighting and being tough.

Let’s be absolutely clear here, the notion of things being separated into ‘girl’s stuff’ and ‘boy’s stuff’ is patently ridiculous, damaging and regressive. We, societally, still do it by the skipload. Again, work in a school, you’ll see this low-key gender-based segregation all the time. It’s frustrating.

It’s important that Space Marines be male, and only male, so this criticism can stand because of what Warhammer 40,000 actually is. More than it’s sci-fi, more even than it’s fantasy, Warhammer 40k is a horror story. It’s actually terrifying, a mix of Orwellian dystopia with Lovecraftian Horror and Hieronymous Bosch artwork. There’s definitely a place in the game for gender equality, but it has to exist within this horror framework, so it’s not ‘equal rights for all’ so much as ‘everyone will get to die for their empire equally’. The Imperial Guard, for example, where it’s not who you are, its just that you’re a body that can hold a lasgun. When people ask for female Marines, when they come up with their own head canon or whatever, maybe a better option is to think, ‘why do I want this? Is it because I want to see a woman who’s as powerful as these men?’. In that case, think about those men. Think about the context within which they exist. Think about the power they represent. Space Marines are the Mitchell and Webb SS sketch but without the punchline. You know the one, where the two Nazi SS officers are sat down, and one of them, acknowledging the plethora of skull emblems on their uniforms wonders ‘Are we the bad guys?’. Space Marines are covered in skulls, only they don’t get to have ethical quandaries.

Representation is important, but it can’t be as simple as like-for-like, it needs the appropriate context to justify it so it doesn’t feel token or inappropriate. I don’t know if there’s an answer to the ‘female Marine’ equivalent, I don’t know if there can be. I don’t think it’s the Sisters of Battle. They’re their own weird, exploitative thing. I think the main thing people need to remember about 40k is that no one’s the good guys. Everyone’s terrible, because they need to be, because it’s a game that needs to justify why everyone fights all the time. It’s satire, parody, cynicism and good old British gallows humour. So trying to find positive representation in that always struck me as kind of a weird idea. If you want lady marines because you want to see some tits in power armour, you can kindly fuck off into a skip. If you want lady Marines because you want representation, is that really the representation you’re looking for? Emotionally stunted killing machines who have become the poster children for a nightmare regime? I honestly think Warhammer 40,000 has some great female characters, but they’re largely absent from the tabletop, acting in the fiction as the human foil to the inhuman marines. If you really like the 40k universe that might be the place you find the representation you want, the Horus Heresy books are a good place to start.

And They Shall Know No Fear. Only people who think they’re invincible live without fear. We unfortunately live in a world where girls learn that they’re not invincible much earlier than boys.

anonymous asked:

Hey, I'd like to request a thing for the RFA+V and Saeran. Can you make a reaction of them visiting Mc's & Jaehee's cafe and MC makes a down right dirty flirt to Jaehee that can only be looked at as raving romantic feelings. Jaehee just brushes it off and isn't even phased by it and thinks MC is just being friendly. (PS I love your blog I just scrolled through all of it it's wonderful)

This is a great request! I didn’t think I would enjoy Jaehee’s route but I found it surprisingly fun and pretty emotional. I also had a great time writing this request but I have no idea how to flirt so I looked a lot of pick-up lines up and made them little NSFW just so you know! I hope that you enjoy!! ^^

Yoosung

  • This poor boy walks into yours and Jaehee’s cafe right before it closes
  • You’re trying, yet again, to get Jaehee to notice your feelings for her
  • Yoosung orders his usual hot drink and sips it as he watches you and Jaehee talk
  • “You know Jaehee I’m getting hungry, why don’t I eat you up?”
  • Yoosung spits his drink out and becomes bright red because omg did he hear you right?
  • But Jaehee just smiles and tells you that you can just grab any pastry you want and it’d be her treat since the two of you are best friends she’s got you covered
  • Yoosung is still recovering from shock and once you leave, he whispers
  • “Jaehee, I think MC meant she wanted to eat… your um… female part…”
  • She’s S H O O K
  • Once you come back, Jaehee grabs your hand telling you that you need to go with her to her bedroom now and asks Yoosung to close up the cafe
  • Yoosung stands there, still blushing and takes a broom and starts sweeping as he starts to hear moans

Zen

  • You invited Zen over to the cafe to try and give you some new pick-up lines to try on Jaehee
  • Zen highkey really wants you two to be together so he’s happy to help
  • He watches as you and Jaehee say goodbye to the last customer for the night
  • Jaehee sighs and complains about her feet being tired
  • You and Zen nodded to each other, turning to face her you said
  • “Well if you’re tired Jaehee, you could always sit on my face.”
  • She just giggles and says that she’ll just sit down on a chair
  • Zen can’t believe Jaehee and once you walk away feeling defeated, he goes over to Jaehee
  • He tells her that you have romantic feelings for her and that you were just flirting hardcore with her
  • Jaehee finally gets it and excuses herself from Zen to go talk to you
  • She whispers something to you and your eyes go wide as she leads you her car
  • You give Zen a thumbs up and he smiles back, feeling happy that you two are finally together, even if he is a little bit jealous

Jumin

  • Jumin usually didn’t like going to yours and Jaehee’s cafe but he made an exception once you insisted that he come by
  • Once there, you took Jumin’s order and swiftly got his drink
  • He sits there and asks if you and Jaehee advanced your relationship any further
  • You sigh and say no that she still just saw you as a friend
  • Jumin tells you to give up since Jaehee has always been stubborn so you two would probably never date
  • You huff and walk straight over to Jaehee and making sure Jumin can hear, you tell her
  • “I bet you taste sweeter than sugar Jaehee, mind if I check?”
  • Jumin’s mouth is hung open, completely shocked at what you just said
  • But Jaehee just says that she probably doesn’t taste like anything and calls you silly for saying something like that
  • Jumin stands up and walks over to her telling her that you love her
  • Jaehee thinks that he joking at first but your blush from embarassment proves otherwise
  • She quickly says goodbye to Jumin as Jaehee leads you to the back of the kitchen
  • Jumim smirks, silently praising himself for finally doing something nice for Jaehee

Seven

  • You had told Seven that today was going to be the day that you would confess your feelings for Jaehee and you wanted him there for support
  • Seven shipped you and Jaehee hardcore so he excitedly agreed
  • When he got there, Seven noticed how nervous you looked and asked what was wrong
  • You told him that you didn’t know exactly how to confess your feelings to Jaehee so you were getting anxious
  • Seven pulled you aside and told you what to tell her, your face went red from what he said but you agreed
  • You walked over to Jaehee and grabbed her arms asking
  • “Jaehee, I seemed to have lost my panties, do you mind if I borrow yours?”
  • She blinks a couple of times in confusion and asks you how in the world could you lose your panties?
  • Seven wants to scream to Jaehee that you like her but he plays it cool and tells Jaehee to think about what you said
  • It takes her a minute but once Jaehee realizes what you meant, she is BRIGHT red
  • You smile as you tells you that she’ll drive you home and quickly takes you to her car
  • Before the two of you leave, Seven unzips his hoodie, showing his shirt that says ‘MC and Jaehee are My OTP’ as he keeps shouting
  • “MY SHIP HAS FINALLY SAILED WOO!”

V

  • V’s basically the dad of the RFA so he knows all about your feelings for Jaehee
  • You invite him to come to yours and Jaehee’s cafe to get some advice from him
  • You set V’s drink down and sit down yourself across from him and sigh telling him how you want to confess to Jaehee your feelings but you just don’t know how
  • V smiles gently and tells you to just let her know how you really feel about her then surely your feelings will get to her
  • With V’s advice, you stand up and excitedly walk over to Jaehee, grabbing her shoulders, you say
  • “Jaehee, I want to touch you all over and you to touch me. Let’s stay together forever.”
  • V almost spills his drink when he hears what you say like what?
  • He watches anxiously as you both await Jaehee’s response but of course she just tells you that she bumps into you all of the time and touches you then
  • Your shoulders slump and you sigh feeling defeated but V comes up behind you and simply tells Jaehee that you love her, you just didn’t know how to express your feelings
  • Jaehee smiles and intertwines her hand with yours and says that she’s more than willing to try a relationship with you
  • V smiles, feeling genuinely happy for the two of you

Unknown

  • Saeran loves visiting yours and Jaehee’s cafe since neither one of you ever judge him about his past
  • Plus the two of you make killer drinks so it’s a win-win situation for him
  • One day when he visits, Saeran notices you look a little down and keep staring at Jaehee
  • When you give him his drink, he asks what’s wrong
  • You tell him that you want to be more than friends with Jaehee but you don’t think she likes you in that way
  • Saeran tells you to go over to her and wait since he has a plan
  • You’re willing to try anything at this point so you do as he told you, walking straight over to Jaehee
  • Before you can do anything, Saeran gives you a push and your lips crash onto Jaehee’s lips
  • Saeran smirks at his work as the two of you become blushing messes
  • You finally have the courage and tell Jaehee that you love her
  • Jaehee is taken aback at first but smiles and tells you that she’s secretly felt the same way for a while now
  • The two of you thank Saeran and walk up to her bedroom
  • Saeran grabs a bunch of pastries from the display case and figures that he’s earned them seeing as the RFA finally had an official couple now

whisk-ering  asked:

i identify as pan, but i know that i would never want to be in a sexual relationship with a guy...... could it be because i've never met a guy who was sexually attractive to me????? im so confused omg

Oh my god I guess the reply I wrote for this initially didn’t post ???

Mkay SO. I’m not an ~expert~ so please forgive if this is a bit scattered.

This right here is the circle of sexuality.

You fill it in with whoever you’re attracted to.

This is what it looks like when you’re heterosexual. You’re only attracted to one gender, the opposite one (it was hard to read with the words inside of it I tried :c)

and when you’re gay it looks like this, filled up with attraction to the same gender that you are.

But when you’re pan it can look like this:

For the record before anyone yells at me: I grouped NB and Agender together because drawing out all the genders would make this needlessly complicated. For simplicity’s sake, assume the green covers all genders that are not strictly male or female.

But because not everyone experiences attraction the same way, it could also look like one of these:

Mine personally looks something like this:

Because I don’t really get attracted to the opposite gender (which for me would be males) as much as I do people of my own gender/other genders that are not male.

The point is, being attracted to all genders doesn’t mean you’re attracted to them all ~equally~. Being more or less attracted to people of one gender than you are to the other doesn’t make you any less pan. Same concept for people who are bi or really anyone who experiences any form of attraction to more than one gender.

Now, that being said it’s completely possible you just haven’t met a guy you’re attracted to or that like me you have a harder time finding guys you’re attracted to than you do finding people of other genders and you know what? That’s completely alright.

And if as time goes on you realize that you just aren’t attracted to guys that’s also fine!

A lot of the time as we grow and change the labels we feel most comfortable with change as well. So I guess I don’t really have the answers (sorry about that btw :c) because nobody but ~you~ can really tell you how you should identify or what your identity is.

If pan is the label that you’re comfortable with right now (or even in the future!) then I think you should definitely keep using it. No matter how you identify, it’s valid and if at a later time you decide that a different label fits you better then that’s okay too and 110% doesn’t invalidate how you’ve identified at any other point in time.

Anyways, I hope this helped and so sorry it didn’t post when I attempted to post it the first time

The Kingsglaive + Their Appearance (Spoilers?)

And here I am once more, trying to pick apart the armor the Glaives have available to them. I’ll be honest: I always thought they have two outfits, the black coat one with black boots and their battle uniforms.

But since I took my time to find every little bit of clothing, I’m wiser than before. Read More if you want to!

I don't want to stir up drama and this isn't meant to sound rude or troublesome because I support this blog and transwomen but female born women are "the most vulnerable intersection of womanhood", it's just the truth. You can fight for both but don't ignore or erase reality

  • 2016 was the most deadly year on record for transgender women, with 23 recorded murders in the United States, all but two of them being trans woc. And those are just the ones we know about as families often cover up the gender identity of trans women when they die
  • Trans women are 4x more likely to live in extreme poverty compared to the general population. If you’re a trans woc that increases to 7-8x more likely. While cis women are more likely than cis men to live in poverty, it’s no where NEAR the rate of transgender women
  • 78% of transgender children K-12 report harassment in school from their peers, it being so bad that 15% left their schools because of it. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say its not in the same realm for cis men nor women
  • Transgender people have double the national unemployment rate, with transgender poc having it 4x higher. Of those employed, 90% report harassment in the workplace. For comparison, the unemployment rates for men and women in the US are generally around the same
  • Here’s the document (w/ cited sources) w/ plenty of other statistics regarding sexual assault, intimate partner violence, lack of healthcare and more that should break your heart

There’s your “reality”.

Speaking of female characters… Sakura, who in the spin-off has become a mother through and through, was also quite impressive. Seeing her trying to protect her beloved daughter with all her heart in place of her husband (Sasuke), who is unable to come home because of his mission, truly conveyed a sense of motherhood.❞

Kishimoto: ❝ Even though they’re a couple who can rarely see one another, ’their feelings are connected’ - just as Sakura said. If you read the spin-off to the end, I think that you’ll understand the true meaning of those words - so I hope that you’ll read it from cover to cover and experience by yourself the connection between Sakura and Sasuke.❞ (x)

anonymous asked:

River Song for the character thing?

  • First impression

See, Time of Angels was like, the second episode of DW I properly watched bc I was being shown the Weeping Angels, so with my bad memory I’m assuming it was confusion, but “she seems cool”.

  • Impression now

I think she’s genuinely my favourite character in the DW universe other than the Doctor. She’s my morally questionable but good at heart wife and I adore her more than words could ever say.

I think a lot of people don’t appreciate just how much of a standout character she is when you look at female characters in general.

For a start, she’s an outlier in the ageist/sexist tradition of casting any woman over 40 as a bitch/villain or a mother (River could have been played by a 25 year old with zero difference to the story, but it wouldn’t have been the same, we all know that, they cast Alex and she’s perfect). She’s mature and badass and owns her sexuality.

And then you have the fact that you just… can’t put her in a box.

She’s allowed to take charge and flirt and lie and cry and make mistakes and grow, and she’s cruel and kind and cold and warm and playful and lethal and determined loves fiercely and would murder certain kinds of people without a second thought, and she’s able to be all of those things at once and have it still make sense.

She’s stripped of her agency from birth and spends her life taking it back and creating herself, living on her terms and being no less than the woman she wants to be.

Also, she’s a great example of a bi/pan character being in a committed relationship and being no less committed for being bi/pan. (Like, alright, anyone with sense knows that it’s an open marriage and that River is obviously very poly, something the show itself does lowkey acknowledge, but really it’s just about as plausible to consider that the marriage IS monogamous as it is to consider that it isn’t, so she’s kind of simultaneously poly representation and committed bi/pan representation,in a way, especially since being poly doesn’t make her less committed anyway, since her devotion to the Doctor is never in doubt.)

  • Favorite moment

Oh god, there’s far too many. I think her speech from Husbands of River Song will always win, though, the “[loving the Doctor] is like loving the stars themselves, you don’t expect a sunset to admire you back”.

In addition to just being beautiful in the moment and the reveal that came after, it also sheds a whole new light on her character that had only been hinted at before, the realisation that all this time, she’s never believed he loves her back. That she has, in words of a later episode, without hope, without witness, without reward, loved him all that time, because that’s her truth.

Her moment of realising it’s him, realising that god, maybe he does love her back, is just so incredible.

  • Idea for a story

Anything about Darillium is always fun, or things that involve her flirting with ladies. I’m working on a thing with her and the Doom Coalition audios companion Helen, because they’re really beautiful and gay together and I have a lot of feelings.

  • Unpopular opinion

I mean I know a lot of people have dumb opinions about River but I’m pretty sure most of what I’ve already said goes against those, so… yeah. Haters can hate but they’re missing out on one of the best female characters to ever exist in Doctor Who ever so… their loss, really.

  • Favorite relationship

Her and the Doctor, obviously. What a fucking power couple did you see how quickly they jumped into action in THoRS once she knew who he was?

I’ll never be over them, frankly, because they’re heartbreaking from the beginning but also fun and silly and adorable and passionate and devoted and I just…. they cover almost all the bases you could possibly want, they’re hot and cute and silly all at once.

(Runners up are River and her parents, and River/Helen(/Liv) in Doom Coalition bc g a y c u t i e s

  • Favorite headcanon

Her numerous wives, including Benny, Clara, Helen, Liv, and Quill. (I’d say Missy but like, they’d just murder each other probably imo, lmao)

She 100% helped Helen Sinclair come to terms with being a lesbian and is very soft with her 1960′s wife okay that’s very important to me.

this got super long but I love River Song so so so so much like fcuk there will never be enough words she’s so important
