and by work i mean your choices in things to reblog

In case no one told you growing up

Many wonderful additions have been posted in the reblogs if you care to look through them (the post would be a giant if I added them all, plus I don’t see them all myself).

An anon asked me for a version of this specifically for feminine hygiene. You can see it here.

Edit: Previously, this post explained how to sanitize a sponge in the microwave - something I did read on several sites before adding to the list. However, I removed it due to concerns expressed by other readers about the creation of super bacteria/possibly melting plastic based sponges.

~~~~
  • Bras last longer if you let them air dry. Don’t put them in the dryer.
  • If you have a problem with frizzy hair, don’t dry your hair with a towel. It makes the frizzies worse. (I recently read an article that said to use a t-shirt? I brush mine out and let it air dry.)
  • Whites wash best in hot water. Everything else can be in cold - save on your electricity bill.
  • Airing out your room/house and letting sunlight in every so often can decrease the number of household pests like silverfish and ants.
  • Black underwear is best during your period as stains are less likely to be visible.
  • To save money, put aside 10% of each paycheck into a savings account. It’ll add up.
  • Unless your hair has something on/in it (like grease or mud or something), using conditioner first can actually be the better choice. The conditioner holds in the good oils that help you hair look sleek and beautiful, which shampoo would otherwise wash away.
  • Speaking of shampoo - if you have long hair, washing just the bits that touch your scalp is generally enough. The rest of your hair gets cleaned with just the run off from your scalp.
  • If you put a tampon in and it’s uncomfortable/you can feel it, you didn’t do it quite right/it’s the wrong size. A properly placed tampon is virtually unnoticeable by the wearer.
  • Apply deodorant/antiperspirant a couple hours in advanced of when you need it. This gives the product the chance to block your sweat glands. Using deodorant just before going somewhere where you’ll sweat (this means walking outside for people in high humidity places) results in your sweat washing the deodorant off and starkly limiting its usefulness.
  • After running the dryer, use the dryer sheet from that load to brush out the lint catch - it gets everything off in a fraction of the time it’ll take you to get it clean with your bare hands. Paper towels also work well.
  • Wash your face everyday, or as often as possible. Forget which brand of cleanser is best. Just washing your face everyday will guarantee you clearer skin. And do you best not to pop pimples, as tempting as the urge may be.
  • Fold laundry asap after taking it from the dryer to avoid wrinkles. This may seem obvious for dress shirts and silly for things like t-shirts, but you’ll notice the difference even then once your shirts stop looking like unfolded paper balls.
read-play-sing  asked:
Yesterday, you reblogged a post that bought into the false dichotomy of convenience food vs "hipster healthy" food. "Mom&pop healthy" is as cheap/cheaper than convenience food. Get a fridge. Most fresh foods keep 2 weeks if stored properly, make a weekly grocery trip to have no waste. Healthy eating means getting the nutrition you need and not going over the calories you need. Apples and hard-boiled eggs are both convenient and healthy. Learn to cook. You can be poor and eat healthy.
Aw, howdy, puddin’!
I am…
…reasonably middle class, which is a miracle for a full-time author.
…equipped of a fridge, a pantry, a chest freezer, and a working kitchen.
…capable of cooking for myself and others.
I am also…
…the daughter of a woman who raised three daughters on welfare.
…formerly homeless.
…a fat woman who has to fight not to slip back into disordered eating habits because of items #1 and #2.
…someone who goes to the grocery store multiple times a week.
…regularly furious about food waste in my own home when people refuse to eat their leftovers/help eat communal leftovers.
So let’s go.
The specific post I reblogged worked from the base premise that it is easier to eat, where “eat” is defined as “get sufficient calories to not feel hungry,” when you are not making a concerted effort to “eat healthy.”  It cited things like “a package of extremely filling oatmeal cookies for a dollar,” and “behold, ramen.”  Interestingly, it did not cite anything to support the “false dichotomy” you’re accusing me of supporting: for reference, here’s the link  http://seananmcguire.tumblr.com/post/164447064675/heyatleastitsnotcancer-candygirl1997
(There is a cranky comment about non-GMO unicorn poop, but as hipsters don’t actually eat shit, that seems less “dichotomy,” and more “angry.”)
But hey, that seems suspiciously like people wanting other people to stop dictating their food choices and assuming they’re eating that way out of necessity, and not because they’re lazy.  That can’t be right!  We need someone who’s seen both sides!
And that’s why now, as someone who used to eat out of dumpsters, as someone who was lucky enough to be poor in farming country and hence have access to produce seconds (IE, bruised and ugly fruit that no one else wanted), as someone who is emotionally incapable of looking at meat before checking the discount meat bin at the grocery store, I am going to answer the question of whether it’s cheaper to eat healthy once and for all:
No.
No, it is not.
No, it is fucking not.
I live near an independently owned fruit market.  They have, regularly, red and gold potatoes for $.99 a pound.  They have big Idaho bakers for $.59 a pound.  These are some of the best potato prices I have ever seen.  Had we lived here when I was a kid, I would have eaten potatoes until I wept.  Assuming that potatoes are now the bulk of our diet, and that we’re only eating the cheap ones, that’s a pound of potatoes per person, per day, for a total of $2.40.  Call it $2.50, after tax.  We are now spending $75 a month on potatoes.  No butter or sour cream, because potatoes are already starchy as hell, and fuck taste, but we have potatoes!
Great.  Do we have a kitchen?  We didn’t, always.  For approximately 1/3rd of my childhood, this plan has us eating raw potatoes.  But let’s say sure.  We can cook our plain potatoes.  Say we cook them every night, and have hot potato for dinner, and then cold potato for breakfast.  Can’t eat the school lunch–pretty sure that’s not healthy enough.  So I guess we’ll buy and boil eggs.  You can boil eggs and potatoes in the same pot.
How many eggs do you give the starving, miserable eight-year-old to fill her up?  Ballpark figure?  Is it the same number you give her fourteen-year-old sister?  Is it the same number you take to your back-breaking physical labor job?  We’re ignoring the emotional and social impacts here, and just focusing on the cost.  So say three eggs each.  Maybe everyone’s hungry, but hey, it’s health food.
A dozen eggs is $2.00.  We are now spending $60 a month on eggs.  That’s $135 a month for a diet that is probably not making anyone happy, but hey, at least it’s all easy on the digestion, right?  And if you’re eating three eggs a day, even if you’re soloing this You Should Be Punished For Poverty diet, your eggs aren’t spoiling.  Assuming you have a fridge.
Hope you have a fridge.
Your children have now started going home with friends in hopes of being fed, but that’s okay, because it means you have fewer mouths to feed, and if you don’t want them to be taken away, you need to make sure they don’t get scurvy.  So we’re going to add milk ($3.50 a gallon, hope no one’s lactose intolerant, if you water it down and watch them like a hawk, you can survive on two gallons a week, which adds $28 to your grocery costs, good job) and apples.  Red delicious, of course, which taste like shame, but they’re cheap when the store has them…assuming you’re not in a food desert, where the only apples are coming from the 7-11 at a dollar apiece.
There are so many things we could be buying to make this feel less like a Dickens novel.  There’s baloney, and peanut butter, and generic mac and cheese.  But they’re not healthy.
Eating healthy is a privilege.  When I made a dedicated effort to change my eating habits, my grocery bills increased by 60%.  I have the receipts.  Not because I was buying “brand names”: because I was buying chicken breasts instead of whole chickens, because I was buying fresh instead of frozen, because I was learning to fill up on things other than chips.  That’s just the way we’ve allowed this country to structure our food.
Yes: allowed.  In England–which has its own problems, please don’t take this as me going YAY ENGLAND LAND OF PERFECTION–they have laws setting the prices that can be charged for “staples,” like chicken, and potatoes, and bread, and butter, and eggs, and milk.  It’s much easier to eat healthy there than it is here.
But here, it is a privilege.
And it ought to be a right.
lifeandthoughtsandtravel  asked:
I know that you are a reptile tumblr but I was wondering if you knew if it were healthy for dogs to be vegans? I'm just curious because of some vegans that have animals and they make them vegans... is it harmful towards the animal or is it completely safe? thank you :)
It’s an absolutely horrible idea. Dogs cannot be vegans and thrive. They’re not vegetarians and they’re not even really omnivores in the same way we are- while dogs will eat everything we do (and more), feeding them a vegan diet is terrible for their health. A lot of vegans who make this decision will blather on about supplements in the vegan food or about how you can make artificial amino acids or how dogs can survive on it so therefore it’s safe, but dogs can also survive eating Ol’ Roy, the worst dog food in the world. Surviving isn’t the same thing as thriving! A dog’s biological structure means that eating plants and only plants isn’t going to work well in the long run- so let’s look at some of the reasons why dogs need to be fed a diet based in animal protein.
1. The canine digestive tract is not good at digesting plant matter.
Plant matter is really tough to break down! Meat, on the other hand, digests quickly. Carnivores and herbivores have differently structured digestive tracts that work with their diets. Let’s look at a rabbit’s digestive tract and a dog’s.
See how a rabbit has a functional cecum, while the dog’s is just a little snub of a thing? The cecum is an organ that plays a really important role in non-ruminant herbivore digestion. It’s a large pouch where cellulose and tough fibers in plant-based food get broken down. Dogs, like humans, don’t have one that’s functional for digestion.
In addition, herbivores like rabbits have very long, complicated digestive tracts. Their food sits in there and breaks down over a long period of time. An average adult rabbit (with a body of about 40 centimeters long, we’re not talking the giant breeds or the dwarf breeds here) has about three meters of small intestine. In American units, that’s a 15 inch animal with almost 10 feet of intestines. A dog, on the other hand, has a small intestine that’s about two and a half times the length of its body- so for instance, a dog that’s two feet long would have about five feet of small intestine. There’s neither enough time nor space in the canine alimentary canal for dogs to fully extract the nutrients they need to survive.
2. Dog drool doesn’t have amylase.
Amylase an enzyme that converts plant starch and glycogen into simple sugars. Herbivores and omnivores typically have amylase in the saliva, which starts to break down those starches immediately. This means by the time the starches hit the intestine, they’ve already started to convert into something that’s actually useful. Dogs, however, only produce it in the pancreas. There’s no salivary amylase in dogs or any other carnivore. This means that digesting plants and converting their energy into something that’s actually useful is really inefficient for dogs; they can only get something like half of the energy and nutrients they’d get from a comparable amount of meat. It also means that to digest plant material, dogs’ pancreases have to go into overtime to make enough amylase, which can lead to severe pancreatic strain.
3. Dogs can’t digest cellulose.
While the dog pancreas makes amylase, something it doesn’t make is cellulase. Granted, herbivores don’t make it either- in fact, very few animals do. Termites are one of the only animals that make their own cellulase. Herbivore digestive tracts have a reservoir of symbiotic bacteria that produce plenty of cellulase. We’ve actually talked about it- it’s what goes on in the cecum! The bacteria in carnivore ceca, however, is linked to the lymphatic system, not the digestive system.
There’s also the issue of their teeth not being adapted for a plant-based diet or even the way they eat being good at taking in plants- but the same is true for anything that’s not animal carcasses, including kibble and wet dog food. That’s just evidence that defines them as opportunistic carnivores; what makes a vegan diet so bad for dogs is their digestive biology.
There is one exception to this rule, and that is when a vet prescribes a vegan diet for an animal with significant food allergies or other dietary issues. This is not something vets do unless it’s the best course of treatment for the animal.
Veganism isn’t the same thing as being an herbivore. Herbivores don’t have a choice; their bodies aren’t built for eating meat. While they might take in animal protein on occasion (deer, for instance, will eat birds sometimes), their teeth, their digestive systems, and their metabolisms all work together to make eating plants the best way for them to survive. A rabbit’s not a vegan- it’s an herbivore. Only humans can be vegans. To be a vegan is to make a choice; it’s to evaluate your place in the world around you and to renegotiate your relationship with all sorts of things- your own body, the food industry, the people around you, and of course the animals you don’t eat. Responsible vegans understand that humans can thrive on an all-vegetable diet; they know that we evolved to be really, really flexible when it comes to the source of our nutrition. While humans are biologically omnivores, we can make that choice.
A dog can’t, and it’s not humanity’s place to force that on them. There are some pets that thrive on an all-vegetable diet. Rabbits, tortoises, finches, hamsters, snails- but not dogs.
If you’d like more information, this is a fantastic write-up, complete with sources! This is a good, short article written by a vet. This is a blog post that talks about some of the other nutritional deficiencies, particularly involving D3. This is another great writeup with diagrams!
The RFA guys + V + Saeran reacting to MC having a daddy kink
yes hello it’s me, the submissive little shit back at it again with more dominance from our faves (i won’t do baehee in this as i can’t really imagine her having a mommy kink, so she would most likely kink shame you tbh)
((my first headcanon in months and it’s daddy smut, i’m not even sorry))
~jane
Yoosung
  • This boy is a switch, okay
  • It’s basically canon that he is often very submissive, but as soon as he gets jealous he gets super possessive and in my humble opinion dominant
  • Which means rough sex, including pinning you to the closest surface, hickies all over and the occasional spanking if he really needed to teach you a lesson
  • He needed to study for his final exams when Zen invited the RFA to see his newest musical, and therefore couldn’t join you there
  • He did however check his phone while taking a break and saw a selfie of you and Zen all over his feed, with crazy fans shipping the two of you
  • Taken over by jealousy, he had you pinned against the front door almost before you could even close it, attacking your neck with love bites as he muttered how you were only his
  • Seeing this side of your usually shy boyfriend always made you a stuttering mess, and before you had even realized it, you moaned out “daddy”
  • For just a moment he gave you his confused puppy look, before fully realizing what you said and blushed, his eyes darkening with lust
  • “That’s right baby girl, I am your daddy. No one else. Now go to the bedroom and be undressed in two minutes, daddy will make sure you remember that you’re his”
  • can you tell how much of a slut i am for dom!yoosung
  • After you were done he would be a blushing mess, as he didn’t even know he was into that
  • Although he would take control more often, he won’t be your daddy every time - but when he is, he takes very good care of his baby girl
Zen
  • Zen had gotten a role in a musical a few cities away but you were too busy to come with him, so he stayed alone at a hotel for two weeks while doing it
  • Even though the two of you made a point to call each other at least once every day, he missed you when you hung up to take a shower and decided to scroll through tumblr while he waited for you to come back
  • He knew you had a fan account on there and while he didn’t follow you because he didn’t want the spam from all your fandoms on his feed, he did check your account now and then
  • Totally not to see you fangirl over him, pff no
  • He scrolled quickly past the things he didn’t care/know about, a small smile on his face as he found it cute that you were so passionate about everything
  • That is until he saw a reblogged post saying “reblog if zen is is the reason you have a daddy kink - i would kill for him to call me princess and tie me up”
  • Flustered, he accidently dropped his phone on the floor and scrambled to pick it up
  • “Zenny? What happened, did you drop your phone again?”
  • You were obviously back from the shower, and the image of you naked and wet in addition to the idea of you calling him daddy made the beast within him groan with lust
  • “Princess, why are you keeping things like this from me?”
  • “What do you mean? What have I done?”
  • “You haven’t told daddy just how much you like being his little baby girl”
  • “I-I… I’m sorry daddy, I won’t keep things like that from you again”
  • “Hmm… Should I believe you? I think you should send daddy a picture of you to show him how sorry you are. Show me your apologetic look”
  • You tried your best to take a doe eyed selfie that showed how much he made you blush, making sure to show your clevage as well
  • “I don’t really think you’re all that sorry, princess. You should send me more pictures like that”
  • You heard his strict tone become a bit more relaxed as he started breathing heavy, and you hoped he was touching himself
  • You did as he said, trying harder to look innocent and sexy at the same time, and heard him downright moan when he recieved the picture
  • “Baby girl, facetime me now. You need to help daddy with something”
  • With that he hung up, leaving you kind of flustered as he had found out your ultimate kink, before you facetimed him and picked up where you left of
Jumin
  • You were trying to read a book and listen to some music while Jumin did some work in his home office, but Elizabeth kept playing with the cord on your headset
  • “No Elizabeth, stop it! Do I really have to go and tell daddy what a bad girl you are? Leave the cord alone!”
  • As you were listening to music and busy trying to distract the cat, you didn’t notice Jumin standing in the door until he chuckled
  • “Daddy, huh? i prefer that over ‘cat mom’, at least”
  • You blushed when you realized he had heard the nickname you used for him only around Elizabeth, and tried to play it off by lifting her up and talking in a baby voice, pretending to voice her
  • “But daddy, she is no fun! Your little kitten wants attention, and daddy was too busy to play. But I will be a good girl from now, I promise”
  • “Don’t make promises you can’t keep, kitten”
  • Jumin shaked his head in faked annoyance, but as he stepped closer you realized he wasn’t looking at the cat
  • You let go of Elizabeth and she walked away, leaving you alone with Jumin towering over you
  • “Good girls don’t blame others, my love. You’re the one who wanted attention, right? You’re the one who wanted daddy to play with her?”
  • You nodded and blushed more, trying not to show how much his words affected you
  • He caressed your cheek before gripping your chin and lifting your gaze up to meet his, wanting to know if you found this as hot as he did
  • “Let’s go get your favorite toys, then. Daddy will make sure his kitten won’t be bored for the next few hours”
707
  • He had been working for two days straight and you hadn’t even seen him leave the computer, except from the occasional toilet break
  • You were needy and wanted his attention, but he kept telling you off because he “just needed a few more minutes, then he would be done”
  • After a few more hours of this, you’d had enough and just plopped down in his lap, ignoring his furious typing
  • “MC, not now, I’m almost finished”
  • “But daddy, I’m lonely… Can you please play with me?”
  • His typing stopped and you could swear you saw his glasses shine mischievously for a moment
  • “Well… If my little princess is lonely, I guess I have no other choice but to play with her. Too bad you have been such a bad girl today, trying to distract daddy. How should you be punished, baby girl? Maybe some spanks on your cute little ass?”
  • You nodded shamefully, pulled your pants and panties down and repositioned so you were laying on your stomach over his lap, presenting him with your bare ass
  • You could only whimper when he smacked your ass without warning, before rubbing his hand over it soothingly
  • “Such a shame that daddy has to punish his pretty little girl… What do I have to do to make you listen, hm?”
  • He spanked you again and again with no mercy, until you were a whiny mess and tried to squirm free of his tight grip on your hips to save yourself from the bruises you knew would come
  • “Will you behave now, princess?”
  • As soon as he saw you nod, he picked you up bridal style and carried you to bed for your reward for being a good girl
  • fuck me up fam, he would be such a good daddy
  • When you woke up in his arms the morning after, he would already be awake and looking at you with heart eyes until your stomach growled, which would make him laugh
  • “Shut up, I’m hungry!”
  • “Hi hungry, I’m daddy”
  • Yes, he would use this as an excuse to say dad jokes
V
  • All he wanted was to edit a few photos of the two of you he had taken to make a card for your anniversary, but as he couldn’t find his laptop, he decided to borrow yours while you were out with some friends
  • However, as soon as he opened it up, he was greeted by the sound of obnoxious moaning and the sound of skin slapping
  • He quickly shut the computer again and hid his face in his hands, mortified that he stumbled upon the porn you were obviously watching
  • Deciding to respect your privacy, he really did try his best to find his own laptop, but he couldn’t find it anywhere
  • He eventually gave up and realized he had to use yours to get the pictures done, so with a deep breath he opened your laptop again, ready to click the porn away and focus on what he needed to do
  • The sounds started again and he paused the video, but as he waited for the editing program to open, he saw the title of what you were watching
  • “Daddy takes care of his princess..?”
  • Intrigued by the idea of you having a daddy kink he resumed the video, growing harder when he imagined the girl with the baby pink lingerine was you
  • A thought crossed his mind; he had the perfect idea as of what to give you for your anniversary
  • When the morning of the big day came around a few weeks later your blue haired boyfriend was already awake, presenting you with your gift as soon as you muttered a “good morning”
  • You opened the card expecting to find a cute message like he usually wrote on your anniversaries, but you were only met with “Daddy saw something that reminded him of his little girl and couldn’t resist getting you something special. Happy anniversary, my princess”
  • He was too shy to meet your shocked eyes, which only widened more when you opened the gift and saw the pink babydoll dress and vibrator
  • “Was it too much..?”
  • Obviously anxious that he assumed too much, you reassured him by pecking his cheek and resting your hand on his hardening croth, suprised by how much even the idea of being called daddy worked up your supposedly vanilla boyfriend
  • “I love it, daddy! Thank you so much!”
  • He smiled relieved as you changed from your sleepwear to your new set, gaining a boost of confidence when he realized he knew your body well enough to get you the perfect size
  • “You’re such a good girl, princess. Now lay back and let daddy give you your real present”
Saeran
  • “Harder, daddy…”
  • He was woken up by your needy moans and the feeling of your hips moving against his, grinding your ass against his crotch as he was spooning you
  • As he was half asleep he didn’t realize what you had said, the only thing he realized was how hard you’d made him and how badly he wanted you that exact moment
  • After hesitating for a few moments he let his hand travel down your belly before pulling your panties to the side, feeling how you were already soaking wet
  • This earned him another moan from you, which only got louder when he circled your clit with two fingers
  • “Saeran, I need you so badly… Please daddy”
  • Hearing his baby girl beg for him made him ever harder, and he couldn’t resist gently biting your shoulder
  • You woke up with a gasp as he pushed a finger inside of you, giving you some much needed satisfaction
  • “Were you dreaming about daddy’s cock, princess?” he groaned in your ear as he pushed it further in, crooking it to find your sweet spot
  • When your only response was a whimper, he pressed his crotch against your backside, letting you feel him
  • “I asked you a question baby, I expect an answer”
  • You nodded and wiggled your hips, trying to get him to shove another finger into you
  • “Tsk tsk tsk, such an impatient little girl. Daddy will take care of you, don’t you worry your pretty little head with that”
  • With that he rolled you over so he was hovering above you, before kissing his way down to where you needed him the most
  • fuck me up again, another good daddy
36 Factors Most People Forget to Consider When Choosing a University
It’s that time of the year again when people are starting to apply and choose their post-secondary options for next September! It’s an exciting time for people who plan to leave home, but it can also be very intimidating choosing your home for the next 4 years (at least). As most of you know, I am in my final year of high school and I am in this exact scenario! Here are some unique factors that you may not think of when choosing your future school :) After all, choosing a university definitely isn’t only about the program! Keep in mind you don’t need to consider every single one of these factors, don’t drive yourself crazy!
1. Location
  • Distance from home (if you’re commuting, how far will you have to travel? If you’re moving, how often will you be able to come home?)
  • Concentration of people and businesses (is the city/town walkable or will you need a car/bus pass)
  • Distance from campus to city central
  • Price and reliability of public transit (especially if your city is spread out, this could play a big part in your life. check if your school includes a transit pass in your tuition fees)
  • Distance to the ocean/lake (you’ll miss the ocean if you’re from the coast!)
2. Dining
  • Meal plan types (some schools have small or large plans, others have one general meal plan)
  • Dietary restriction options (vegan, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, kosher, halal, etc.)
  • Kitchens in residences
  • Whether or not you must have the meal plan (some schools require that you have it)
  • Quality of food (try to ask someone who is already at the university if you can, ask someone unbiased)
  • Number of food options (ex. some schools give you ‘cash allowance’ to spend outside of the cafeteria, also the number of food options available at a time in the cafeteria)
3. Extra-Curriculars
  • Clubs (easiest way to make friends if you’re more introverted!)
  • Sports teams (quality and/or quantity of teams, even if you don’t play, it’s fun to attend games and cheer on your school!)
  • Sororities and fraternities
4. Affordability
  • Job availability (if you plan on working part-time, it’s a good idea to scope out jobs online just to see how many and what types of jobs are generally available)
  • Scholarship money awarded (ex. if one school offers you more money than the other)
  • Housing prices (not just residences)
  • Cost of living (grocery, transportation, etc. if you’re in a more remote area these things could be more pricey)
  • Tuition costs (generally they’re all about the same unless you’re studying internationally)
5. Dorm Rooms / Housing
  • Guaranteed residence (some residences will guarantee you residence for one year while others guarantee for all four! living in residence is generally cheaper than living on your own)
  • Room mate matching system (if you want/need a room mate, some schools having incredible matching systems that act more like Facebook where you choose your room mate! others have short and general questionnaires)
  • Quality and size (try and find reviews online if possible, I’ve heard horror stories about mould in dorm rooms!)
  • Availability of sinks in dorms (everyone I’ve talked to is either very happy that they have a sink or wishes they had one!)
  • Practicality of accommodation outside of residences (for after first year if desired)
6. Demographics
  • Average age of people in the city/town (some places are considered ‘student cities’ where students are relied upon for the community to function)
  • Political views, race and/or religion (a diverse community is a strong community!!!)
The Loft (and so much more) Glitch
Hello! Nozomi Kei here with my first guide. This one will be covering the new popular glitch that we often see used to create a ‘loft’ of sorts with the troupe stage, but that’s really just the beginning! I know there has been at least one written guide around here by @diskwrite-ffxiv , and I don’t mean to step on any toes, I just have some other tidbits to include. Plus I want to push myself to be more helpful to the community and my friend is encouraging me to go ahead and post it since I already wrote it. I’m gonna try to keep this straightforward so if you have any questions go ahead and toss them at me publicly or in private. ^_^
What does this glitch work with?:
• Anything that doesn’t fall in the rug category of the housing storage *
Where does this glitch work?:
• On the ledges above windows, on the wall ledges, above the door, and certain parts of Oasis house pillars for sure
Tl;dr: Click parallel wall item, drag it where you want your glitch item, hit the subcommand menu key twice
Placements:
• Just above or below
• Straight doesn’t matter (usually)
• Tiny in and out variations exist
Basics
• Set a key of your choice to 'Display Subcommands’ in your keybinds under the 'System’ tab if you haven’t yet
• Know what number your glitch item is in the 'All’ list and have at least that many items in your wall-mounted list (wanna place item #6 from 'all’? Have six items in the 'wall’ tab. #3? Have at least 3)
• Left click on the item on the 'wall’ list that matches the number of your glitch item in 'all’
• Left click on the item now halfway buried in your floor
• Move it over to where you want to place your glitch item (either just barely in the orange or purple at a ledge)
• Hit your new subcommand menu key
• Hit it again to select “Place”
• Tada! Your glitch item is now placed. It can be rotated at will.
Some extra notes!
• It’s okay to leave your
on; it doesn’t mess anything up when you move your cursor to hit okay mid-glitching.
• You need the first box,
, checked.
• You can actually place items slightly further forward and back if you are careful. When the placement arrows go horizontal on the ledge pay attention and choose what you want for some interesting item layering options.
Some things that made use of this delicate layering:
Fake bay windows night scene
Space-saving scenery window
Initial orientation when taking something from storage almost never matters since you can just rotate afterwards. (But if you’re trying to do some finicky layering from the point above it can help to drop something from storage perfectly parallel to the wall and have your camera looking down from above when you hit 'place’) Be crooked as you like pretty much always though.
• You can give your lofts custom wallpaper! Just glitch a blank partition up and add wallpaper to it.
• Go wild with trying items out! You can come up with all sorts of crazy cool stuff. Make gangplanks, custom shelves, fancy fountains, miniature doors, raised hallways, upstairs baths.
• I can’t afford a 250k stage so I used Royal Plotting Tables at 12k each from the mb. They’re huge and cheap and fancy.
• Use this glitch to fake putting things on a ground level troupe stage! Place your cupboards and bookshelves on the wall ledge so they appear to be sitting on top of it! The room shown is my fc mate Vic Viper’s. Thank you Vic!
•  This stuff only works with the existing architectural features that are not changeable/movable (so no tricking it with partition wall ledges).
• Right before maintenance I discovered another spot in Oasis residences; the corner pillars midway up have a couple slants you can rest items on!  Try the glitch with all the flat and skyfacing slanted surfaces/railings/etc in your rooms and houses and see if you can find more!
* Why does this not work with rugs? Because of the automatic list sorting in the storage, rug category items will always be below any wall items one would use to do the glitch. If anyone figures out a way around this please share! I want a rug loft. TwT
I am planning to make a clear guide video soon too for those who learn better that way.
Please continue to support all the content creators in our community with your likes and reblogs! The writers, artists, guide makers, event organizers, and musicians all make incredible things and we are lucky they share their works with us, often for free!
If you find my guide hard to follow try checking out @diskwrite-ffxiv ’s guide here or @aliceffxivhouses guide here
Mobile Masterlist
Ok, so my mobile masterlist decided to just stop properly working and messing up links and the likes. Updated it, but can’t reblog, so from now on this will be my mobile friendly masterlist.
You can find the desktop version here . (Not updated but will update soon)
Due to the length I’ve decided to put the masterlist below the “Keep Reading” since I got some complaints :)
Instead I’m just adding the amount of stories above for each part (not including every part of a multiparter so if there are five parts to a story it will still only count as one).
Story counts:
Dean x Reader: 54
Sam x Reader: 28
Cas x Reader: 17
Others x Reader: 22
Friendship and family fics: 21
Inside Choices: Growing from “Rant Ahead, Be Aware”
While looking through Tumblr posts this week, one of the longer response posts caught my eye. The post was well written and though titled “Rant ahead”, was a well reasoned commentary on things that bother the post’s author. Since the post brought up many points that other players have also expressed, I thought replying as a blog post so everyone has a chance to see the response would be appropriate.
Thank you to lauraotaku2234 both for your thoughts and for permission to share it in our blog. The post is bolded below.
From the Tumblr post “Rant ahead, be aware”:
I just love how Pixelberry reblogs fanart and nice messages about the game. But when fans are actually pointing out errors and mistake the game has done… they just ignore it. They have decided to close a bubble to them.
This is a very fair point. Our team really does read a lot of the feedback generated by our players. But even though we may be working on fixes or things that address the critiques, most of the time people on our  team don’t give a firm answer for fear of making a situation worse or suggesting something that might end up not happening in the future. Because I lead the team, I have a lot more latitude in responding to critiques, but I’ve been focused on a lot of different projects which means that I haven’t responded as often as I should.
I hope this post helps to provide some more light on many of the below issues.
Now, there is a difference between the: “We want more diamond options” and the “James situation”. Here’s why:
On the diamond thing, I doubt PB will change that, mainly because they get their money from us buying diamonds, the more options we get, the least money they make. So its understandable. Yet, the money they make is supposedly to get better staff and equipment so the game can improve and be better. A year has already passed and I still can’t find what the improvement is or was.
You’re correct, it is harder for us to change the diamond economy. We have been experimenting with different options that try to balance our ability with making money and giving players a better experience. As a player, myself, I totally get the complaints. I don’t have anything new to announce right now, but we are working on different features and will see if things like rewarding diamonds for watching ads will help in providing that balance.
It also makes sense that you and other players can’t find what improvements have been made. But I’m hoping that is partially because we’ve been slowly building and rolling out improvements over time and that you’ve gotten used to some of those changes.
One of our most popular requests is launching more weekly content. And in the past year, the biggest change we’ve made by far is expanding from 3 books at launch to a much more robust library. When we first launched Choices, we had about 10 people writing with two new chapters per week. We now have over 30 writers and sometimes release as many as 6 new chapters a week with other new series in production, too. Along with all these writers, we’ve added more artists, producers, testers, and other roles to increasing our capacity for weekly storytelling.
It’s something you can’t see, but when I walk through the doors into our offices, I love hearing the buzz in our office and seeing all the people working together on Choices. And when all the writers assemble for their weekly “Writer’s Meeting,” I still get the chills seeing so many writers gathered around a long table talking about how they can improve their craft together.
So, I hope you really do believe we’ve been investing a lot in growing our team because we treat the future of Choices very seriously.
(As an aside, some people on the team have suggested maybe doing a Fan meet-up in the office - in the Bay Area in California - or maybe sending writers to different book conferences next year, so that maybe some of you can see that growth in person, too.)
Now… The James thing. PB common, you can do better than that. I wouldn’t be upset if you they gave us an actual reason as of why. Also, we need an explanation about what “other characters” means. Will the rest of the character change too? Will it only be a few one’s? I’m replaying every single finished book to find what other faces may have been changed. It has to be done, I don’t want to play The Royal Romance to find you changed Hana’s character appearance just… because.
You are right. We should have told you about the change ahead of time. Also, I wish I could go into more details about the change, but in my previous post, I tried to say as much about why we made the change as I already could. We know this really upset many of you. We understand. It’s our bad for disappointing you.
In regards to “other characters”, we have not rolled out the changes yet, but our Tumblr fandom is pretty clued into what other characters will likely be changed. We will make specific references to those characters when it happens. We will not be changing any other Love Interests (LIs), so Hana and others are safe.
The only book I’m not replaying is ROE, why? Because is a waste to my keys and time. The storyline got old really fast. It was actually a really good story, and I remember the First Book Finale actually left people with their mouths open, but they ruined it when they brought a third book, and now a fourth. I mean, it’s a plot that can be solved with a Snap. Adding more tasks as a way of length[en]ing the story was a stupid move and only brought fans rage. Most fans agree with me when I say: Endless Summer should have as many books as The Freshman, The Crown and The Flame shouldn’t have ended in the third book, The Haunting of Braidwood Manor should’ve been longer, Most Wanted deserves a second book, and even tho The Freshman is my favorite series, The Sophomore plot isn’t going anywhere, it’s like Love Hacks at its beginnings and it’s tiring.
As I mentioned before, Most Wanted 2 must happen. It’s the book every fan is waiting for, including me. It has an amazing storyline with amazing characters, yet, they decided to shut it out, and even erase it from their AppStore/PlayStore menu.
It’s pretty clear that much of the Tumblr fandom has the least love for Rules of Engagement (ROE.) But we have other fan groups and other people who really like this series. Just as we actively try to promote diversity in our characters, we do try to balance the resources we put into genres for various fandoms and individuals playing through our stories. We aim to have something for everyone, and all of our writers pour their hearts into everything they work on.
As the RoE series wrapped up, the writers of ROE moved on to a “mini-book” that would tie the series up in the right way. The book will probably finish too quickly for fans of ROE and not fast enough for fans of other series, but this book length fit the purposes of the story arc. Also because we have such a wide variety of writers, each with their unique storytelling talents and skills, continuing a romance series such as RoE doesn’t actually affect some Tumblr fandom favorites, like Endless Summer or Most Wanted.
Part of what we’re trying to do with Choices is to try new series and genres which is why we sometimes will end, or pause a series faster than fans want so that we can try new things. Most Wanted didn’t do as well financially as our other two launch series, so we moved that team onto Endless Summer and LoveHacks, where they could excel at leading new projects. One of those writers, Andrew, has moved onto managing another project. But Luke continues to be a part of Book 2 and 3 of Endless Summer (which we are aiming to start releasing in December.) And Owen is working on a secret new project, now that LoveHacks has completed!
I really do hope and think that when it makes sense, we will start work on Most Wanted 2. But it will be a matter of the right timing in terms of having one or more of the original team ready and balancing the start of Most Wanted 2 versus other new series we want to start. Dave and Sam will eventually return.
I respect Pixelberry as a company a lot. But with these changes and empty storylines, I just wonder where the old Pixelberry went. It seems like they just ran out of imagination to make stories, so they just continue old ones and create new ones with similar plots but shorter books that in the end everyone likes.
Thank you for respecting us. It’s clear in the thoughtfulness of your “rant” and in the praises and critiques of our fandom. Even when you think we’re ignoring you, we hear many, many of the messages. And I admit that some of the critiques really hurt and sometimes the ones that hurt the most are the ones that ring the most true. But we also recognize the strength of the critiques often is also a measure of how much our fandom cares.
I really, truly hope that as we release new chapters, books, and series that you’ll see that the creative wells of our teams has not run dry. And when a writer is being blocked, a designer is confused by the path forward, or a tester doesn’t know how to reproduce a problem, the creativity of the fandom often breaks that block, clears the path, and helps us keep moving forward. Whether it’s beautiful art, all the “Jomes” jokes, Brian’s Ask Blogs, the many forms of Cetus, faceclaims (yes, it’s okay to keep doing them), and other posts, your creativity motivates us.
As you continue to share on Tumblr or Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, we’ll continue reading, digesting, and modifying our plans. But if you have specific problems or want to ensure we hear what you have to say, I encourage you to contact us directly via our in-game Help. Or if the game is down, reach out via Contact us via our website. We have experienced Player Specialists who listen, solve, tally, describe, and share your thoughts with the right people on our team. They are the first to alert the rest of the team to major problems and Trina, the leader of that team, also shares motivating, poignant, or key messages to the whole studio. Also you can tweet story related questions to @PlayChoices. Jessica will often check with individual writing teams to see if it’s something they can answer.
To all of our fandom everywhere, thank you for your love. We understood that love isn’t just fun and compliments, but it also comes with teasing and obstacles. And the best love comes with hard talks, accountability, and growth. When we stumble, we promise to honor our side of the relationship by continuing to learn and grow. And we hope that you will continue to rant, tease, and grow with us.
On behalf of our whole team,
Oliver
Creators Misunderstanding Their Fan Base: Undertale
I love Undertale, so do many others. However, I love Undertale because of the fan base. I have met so many kind and determined individuals that I wouldn’t have met otherwise if not for Undertale. Many of these people are artists, and it’s nice to see the same characters drawn in so many different styles. Even better is when there is a story written about Undertale, a what if this happened instead of this? Great examples of this are Dreamtale, by @jokublog (currently not theirs more about that later), Glitchverse, by @camilaart, and Xtale/Underverse, by Jackei/@xtaleunderverse. There are many more alternate stories/universes I would love to share but I really want to focus on these two right now. As you may or may not know, both these creators make animations/comics based off their story lines, and they are incredible. The amount of effort that goes into each and every frame of animation is jaw dropping to say the least. The story is also pretty great compared to most, especially Glitchtale’s constant subversion of every expectation and Underverse’s imaginative plot and character portrayal are no small feat either. It’s immediately clear that a lot of effort goes into their work to make it as great as possible and create their animations fairly quickly. However, I’m not here to simply sing their praises because the title isn’t “Amazing Undertale Universes You Have To See To Believe” no, this is “Creators Misunderstanding Their Fan Base: Undertale”
 Recently a story came out about Joku threatening to use her fan base against another person who was just giving feedback on a shirt that they made. This led to them deleting their blog and now it’s being held by a nice individual so that Joku can have the name back if she wants. Joku makes sure people know that she is getting lots of hate over this misbehavior of hers. She’s making it seem like her fan base is full of haters that demand comics every week and don’t care about the person behind the project at all. Her “fans” led her to deleting her blog that she had used for a while now, over one small incident. That’s. Not. True. Joku’s fans are passionate, without a doubt, but they have huge amounts of respect for the amount of work that goes into this complex narrative that Joku is almost always working on. Joku, you’re fans are there, making fan art, liking your posts, and sending positive words your way, but you don’t care about that, do you? You just want to show everyone that you can overcome the haters by yourself, but you can’t, nobody can on their own. You say you ignore the haters, but dealing with what I’ve heard people say about you in silence, isn’t a great idea. If you open up more to your audience, show your real fans that you still care about them, I have no doubt that there will be a shift in the types of people who view your content. I along with many others didn’t hate you for what you did, was it a bit uncalled for? Yea, a little bit, but that one incident with someone WHO’S ALREADY FORGIVEN AND APOLOGIZED FOR MAKING IT PUBLIC, shouldn’t have led to you deleting your blog. The blog is being held for you, your choices are to reset back to zero and build your blog all over again, or quit and leave everyone.
 Jackei, the creator of Xtale and Underverse, is passionate about her work. Her amazing narrative and intense animations make it a joy to experience through and through, but she has her flaws as well. One day you’ll get a hilarious shitpost from Jackei about how she got braces, the next a comic about how she is having to stand against her fans barrage of negativity. I’m saying it right now that there is a difference in HATING and CRITICIZING and it’s easy to tell which is which. Hate usually is opinionated, relying on the same feeling from others to help boost their opinion into more of a fact. Fans that criticize a work however often point out actual problems with the product they were presented with. Maybe the animation was a bit low quality in some places, or maybe the dialog didn’t add anything to the situation, but whatever it is its a real problem that they just shed light on for you. Those fans care, unlike the haters you insist are your fans. Many people really love your intense devotion to your work, making comics often along with incredible animations that have breathtaking moments a plenty, but it sucks when someone you hugely respect talks down to you. You make it clear that whenever you get hate you try to deal with it in silence, and for the most part if you are a strong enough person that works out really well for you. Not only does it improve your image as a creator but it makes fans think much much more of you as a person. However, you show us that side of you way too much, and its clear you want to be that person you portray yourself as. You’ve gotten much better about showing us that you can withstand the hate sent your way, and your shitposts/memes are always a joy to behold, but why not show off the better side of your fan base, the people who really care about you and your work. It’d make a difference in how you view your fans. Just remember Jackei, haters shout loud because they want others to hear them, but when a fan comments, they don’t even expect an answer from anyone.
 Camila is an incredible artist as well, creating a 20 minute animation in less than 4 months is unreal. On top of that the animations feature a standard of quality not usually seen in animations made in the same amount of time. However, Camila is known to harp on people for asking when the latest episode is going to come out. Her response is usually a meme or her telling them to chill and just wait. Camila has the opposite issue that Jackei does, she will show all the asks about when the episode is coming out, making it seem like that’s all her fan base cares about. That and her talking down to her fans often, sometimes calling them stupid for not understanding a small detail in the animation. She’s who Jackei strives to be, impervious to all hate sent her way. To be honest, it’s not the best way to act towards your fans, sometimes people honestly just want to know because they are hyped for the next episode. Especially with the amount of information Camila will spoil about the episode, when in reality it’s mostly misdirection to make hers fans come to one conclusion before the episode even starts, just so she can subvert everyone’s expectations in the end. It’s incredible how many times I knew what would happen just because I followed Camila’s tumblr, @camilaart. Camila, I desperately wanted to donate $50 to you on patreon after you lost part of your house because I desired to talk to the biggest inspiration in my life at the time. To be honest I still want to, but I’m only 15 and I have no income for which to donate to either of you, sorry /;-;/. Camila, your awe inspiring, I just wish you would act more mature and be more loyal to people. After what happened to Jackei you threw her under the bus, reblogging what she said just to garner it more exposure. It’s shocking how many people you turn on after someone comes out with something bad about that person, like Jackei and Ultima almighty. You’re getting much better though about pointing out positive things, like animators and artists who have almost no exposure on youtube, is pretty amazing. It’d be amazing though, if you could use the positives to detract haters instead of memes. You’re a role model for some people whether you want to believe it or not, and sometimes people take anything that role models say as undeniable fact. Your on the right path, please don’t reset again.
(Everything I said are just my thoughts on these two amazing animators, I just really want to get these out their so that maybe they will both see this post and reflect on themselves as creators. I plan to do more of these but I don’t what topics/people to do yet. And guys, don’t hate these artists just for me pointing out a few things wrong with them, that’s the complete opposite of what I’m trying to say. If you don’t like them, then just ignore them, it’s as simple as that. Thanks for reading this, it truly means a lot to me.)
((OMG!!! THANK YOU GUYS I MADE A HUGE MISTAKE. I INTENDED TO MAKE IT 3 SECTIONS AND ACCIDENTALLY MADE TWO THE FIRST TIME COMBINING JACKEI AND JOKU I AM SO SORRY!!! THANK YOU FOR POINTING THIS OUT TO ME!))
!!! important, please read !!!
hello! not really sure how to say this, but due to personal issues, i’ll be leaving tumblr. don’t worry, my blog won’t be deleted, however it will remain inactive beginning January 1st until, well, probably forever.
i began my journey on this site in the early spring of 2017 as a little joke. you see, @classical-crap (a wonderful, hilarious blogger who i like to refer to as my mother) had gotten some asks from her followers stating that they kept reading her URL as “classical-carp”. a little while later, she made a post saying that the URL “classical-carp” was available, so i raced for it. unfortunately @classical-carp got to it before i could, but i still managed to get the URL, just short of a hyphen. i made absolutely abominable photoshopped pictures of fish heads on top of human musicians, i made human musicians play fishes as instruments, i made awful, awful distorted composer portraits. i even pasted composer’s heads on top of fish. really, i was all over the place. yet people loved it and that honestly surprised me; i was not expecting so much support. as i type this post, i just hit 2.6k followers which is incredible. thank you. y’all have a weird as fuck sense of humor, but i admire that.
really, just thank you so much to all those who have supported me and follow me and like and reblog and comment on my posts and are generally just amazing people. you all have brought me so, so much joy and laughs and i hope i was able to do the same for you.
i’d like to give all my love and best of wishes to my carp family, in no particular order, @classical-crap, @classical-carp, @moz-arent, @carpical-class and the rest of the carpies (far too many to keep count), to my three hilarious and endearing anons @anonymousflowey@reel-screm-ofishial, and the sparkle anon, and also to my musical squad, @flutejesus@tuba-jesus, @secretstradivarius, @five-flats, @tuba-holy-spirit, @practise-room, @allmusicmajorsdoiscry, @the-music-keeper, @trumpet–god, @trumpet-jesus, @flute-by-the-foot, @sherlockedviolist, @fluteytootandscream, @theviolin, @recorderlover, @violinandchill, @incorrect-composer-quotes, @in-the-key-of-f-major, @carcrashstra, @mmetafour, @crap-iccioso, @a-screaming-flute, @not-as-bad-as-frankenstien, @back-to-bassics, @novelingviolinst, @violapianolife, @violalife, @orchestraordie, @official-euphonium@doing-it-for-debussy, @deenielweeniel@nannerlmozartofficial, and @mozart-fx-official. i’d like to even give my love to the rosin folk, @pumpkinspicerosin, @pumpkinspicedrosin, @rosin-official, and @rosincronch. you guys sure make musical tumblr a lot more interesting. seriously though, stop. eating. rosin. that stuff is definitely not good for you.
if i missed anyone, i’m sorry but i have a terrible habit of stalking people’s blogs on the daily yet not following them like a proper sane person and i took a lot of this from my following list because it’s hard to keep track of names. really, just consider all of yourselves beloved mutuals regardless if i follow you or not because you can be assured i’ve probably definitely stalked your blog at one point. probably multiple points. still, you mean so much to me and you’re hilarious and i love your blog and like, honestly just keep being amazing.
you all make tumblr such a bright place and have made me laugh until i cried and i appreciate that so, so much. i love you all and please keep doing what you’re doing as long as it makes you happy.
and to all musicians reading this, no matter your skill level, your age or your instrument: persevere. music is not easy whatsoever but it is so rewarding and if you love it and you have a passion for it, don’t quit. i know at times it may be hard and there will be obstacles and doubts that come up in your mind and it may be so tempting to just give up but look at how far you’ve come and keep looking forward to your goals and your aspirations for the future. keep dreaming. do not let anyone bring you down. success is not handed to you. you have to work for it. you are responsible for your own great future and your own happiness and damn it, you deserve the best. do not tell yourself otherwise. music is an art. you have the responsibility of being the artist. make it happen. show everyone what you got. show everyone that you are an incredible human being with so, so much amazing potential for great things. do great things. make yourself proud. you are worth it. i’m cheering you on.
so, in conclusion: keep being amazing. keep making music, memes, and hell, make some more fish photoshop edits while you’re at it. carry on my legacy. do it. make me proud.
i hope you all understand and support my choice. once again my blog will stay open to hopefully still bring joy(?) from my questionable posts but it will remain completely inactive beginning January 1st. i just wanted to give a little heads-up so i wasn’t like, posting this and then immediately jumping off deck. you get it.
thank you all again and i hope you all have an absolutely wonderful 2018!
p.s: don’t forget to practice your scales
3,000 FOLLOWERS GIVEAWAY
Alright, kids. It’s that time of the year again (?
So I just reached 2k followers, and it happened astronomically faster than I expected. So instead of doing a giveaway for that, I’m gonna do it for the 3k milestone :D
BUT THIS TIME, THINGS WILL BE A BIT DIFFERENT.
As in the previous occasion the prizes are:
  1. A Glade Born Tree tarot spread (19 cards, no questions, this is a spread where the Tarot conveys whatever it feels it needs to say)
  2. A Daemon reveal session (I prefer using the term daemon over totem or spirit animal since it’s not directly associated to any specific minority or culture). This will have to be done via private chat, Skype, or a similar medium and can take a long while, even several days and different conversations.
  3. Up to five questions (to be discussed with me beforehand so we can formulate them the best way possible) to be answered by an Oracle deck of my choice (I’ll pick the best depending on the questions you want to ask). Each question will be answered with a spread of one up to five cards.
  4. Five sigils created specifically for you. I can help you word the request but it’s not necessary, you can simply give me the final consonants and I’ll draw them for you, no questions asked. I will later on publish the sigils if I feel they should be shared because others could benefit from them, but I won’t disclose those with private meanings nor your association with them if you don’t wish me to. Also you don’t have to ask for all five sigils at the same time, although I don’t recommend you wait years in case, I don’t know, I die?
  5. One spell or hex designed specifically for you according to the ingredients you have access to (I refuse to create spells that will harm someone undeserving of being harmed, mess with somebody’s free will, threaten somebody’s sexual consenting abilities, or disproportionate if they’re meant for punishing).
  6. Help and tips in building your altar and/or witchy supply storage (especially recommended if you’re a closet witch). We can skype and I’ll give you ideas of where you can hide stuff. I’m incredibly shady so I know where you tuck things so nobody will notice. This is more of a practical prize, but shit, I’ve been seeing a lot of witchlings who could use a hand!
HOWEVER, TWO MORE, VERY INTERESTING PRIZES WILL BE ADDED TO THIS LIST:
7. A flash course on alternative spirit work. Specifically how to tame, bind, banish, and exorcise spirits. This will come along with a small handbook for you to have as a resource for future reference.
8. A tarot reading by Yeyé. I really have no idea of how many cards, she usually needs about three, but it varies. This one will take a while because you would have to give me your questions and when I saw her I would let her know so she can do the spread for you. She requires a few things, so don’t choose this prize if you’re not comfortable with sharing: age, name (just first name), date of birth, place of birth, and time of birth.
All of these prizes can be adapted to your needs.
RULES:
1) NO TAGGING THIS AS GIVEAWAY, you’ll ruin it for everyone, don’t be that guy.
2) I RESERVE MYSELF THE RIGHT OF REFUSING REQUESTS THAT GO AGAINST MY MORALS, meaning helping you in racist, homotransphobic, islamophobic, etc. ways. YEYÉ CAN ALSO REFUSE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS SHE DOESN’T FEEL COMFORTABLE ANSWERING.
3) Each reblog counts as an entry. Likes can be used to bookmark. Maximum three reblogs per day. YOU MUST BE FOLLOWING ME.
As before:
As soon as I reach 3k followers, I’ll be picking the winner randomly using the page RANDOM.ORG. I’ll record it and search for the winner during the video to show the contest’s transparency.
I’ll get in contact with the winner via PM or ask. If these options are disabled, I’ll try to do it via tag. In any case, the winner will have FIVE DAYS (120 hours since the moment I announce it) to reach me back, else I’ll pick a different one.
Have this photo of my Yeyé with a big ass leaf, just because she’s cute.
This giveaway is in no way associated with Tumblr.
defendthechibi  asked:
I'm a beginner in Chinese and having a hard time finding out where to start. What would you recommend?
@defendthechibi: mmmmdamn. ok, so Chinese is not a lang I approached on my own, I started in a class, but with that said here’s some combination of how that went down and what I would suggest (if you are a self-learner of Chinese pls do add):
1. Get a fucking fantastic foundation in pinyin and tones. I cannot emphasize this enough—start good habits now or it’ll be really terrible to find out no one understands you because you were like “tone, I’ll come back to that!” Here is a very nice pinyin chart with literally every syllable combination recorded with every tone. Here’s a pinyin practice game. If you can get someone who already speaks Mandarin to help that’s of course ideal, especially for the retroflex sounds, but not essential. Either way make sure you practice speaking aloud. Here’s a funny tone explanation that’s secretly great.
2. Pick a book and stick with it. So this is not Mandarin-specific, but I find that self-learners (myself included) have a habit of starting like three different texts for one language and it’s a mess. Decide if you wanna start with traditional or simplified characters, then pick a textbook, it wont be perfect because nothing is, and maybe just a grammar book for reference. We used Integrated Chinese in class, but I don’t know that I’d recommended it for soloing, Practice Makes Perfect has great other books I’ve used and seems like a better choice. This series is good grammar help, and so is Modern Mandarin Chinese grammar (pdf). When looking for textbooks I recommend reading reviews and also taking into consideration the time/pace you want to work at. Learning a language is a lifetime thing so really you just gotta start somewhere and plow ahead. (also check what the library has!)
2.5 Don’t buy those damn books of character lists. I’m sure you’ve seen them, “memorizing hanzi!” “500 common characters!” whaaaatever. Whatever textbook yr using will tell you what characters you need right then, and if that’s not enough there are plenty of frequency lists online. More importantly, do learn the radicals When it comes to actually getting characters into your brain it’s some combination of mnemonic device (which works better if you make it up, not if some rando writer does anyway) and rote muscle memory—so all you need is paper. Get square/grid paper and pay attention to proportions or if you must get a book, get one that has practice space. Skritter is amazing and wonderful and I cannot praise it enough but also it is not free. But like if yr really serious you’ll probably have to put some money down somewhere. Whatever you do, do not buy Chineasy it is a plague upon our language learning household. (note: some people suggest not learning characters until after awhile of studying spoken. That sounds sort of terrible to me, and it also means you won’t be able to engage with anything Chinese online. But it is a thing, and sites like YablaFluentU, and ChinesePod could be a way to go [and are good anyway])
3. Practice, practice, practice! Ok cool you started doing some stuff! Check you out! If you want to get feedback start posting snippets on Lang-8, you can even meet people to skype with. Or if you want (and have a smart phone) you can get a chat buddy on hellotalk. Maybe there’s a meetup group in your area who knows. Make yourself/download an Anki deck, etc. etc. Just try to always do a little something everyday. I think because of characters Chinese has a particularly steep learning curve—I still can’t open a webpage and just like read it—so it might be better to focus on practicing what you know rather than trying to engage too much with “actual” Chinese. That said….
4. Don’t loose hope, find fun things in Chinese. Even if it’s not actively practicing your language skills, find ways to enjoy Chinese that don’t drain you like too much studying will. Listen to music,  read about idiomswatch movies, or if you’re a nerd like me, read about Chinese linguistics! If you have a hobby, you can find stuff on your hobby in Chinese. e.g. here is a whole cooking channel that is also subbed in English.  DramaFever has, duh, lots of dramas, but is not free.
I hope that sounds like a setup for success! Here’s some dictionaries: MDGB, HanziCraft, lineDict (let’s you draw characters). If you have a smartphone get Pleco. Here’s a thing that annotates text & has rollover translation: MandarinSpot (maybe get a plug-in if yr into those). Here are general help sites: SayJACK  & Chinese Grammar Wiki. There are so so so many other resources out there, but rather than stockpile them all right now I think it’s better to focus on whatever textbook/system you chose and just start moving. Once you have a little more of a base then look for cool blogs or whatever works well for YOU.
If there was something more specific you wanted just throw that @ me. If people have suggestions you can send them in and I’ll compile them so we don’t have to reblog this massive thing  くコ:彡  くコ:彡  くコ:彡
@staff
I’m not referring to the company, but to the individual behind this. To all the individuals behind this.
I want to talk about Net Neutrality. You were on the forefront of the movement protecting this, and suddenly you got bought out and were ordered to change course.
However, just because the boss tells you top shut this down, doesn’t mean you should. YOU, the individuals at the Tumblr office, have a choice. You can follow the new rules put in place by your new overlords, or you can rebel and fight for what you know is right!
You always have the option to defy corporate. That’s the beautiful thing about free will. You’ve seen the posts you’ve been ordered to delete, deep down you know that your orders are wrong.
All you have to do is let us, the Tumblr user base, keep fighting. Stop causing us to unfollow the net neutrality tag, stop deleting our posts. Just look the other way, and we’ll handle the rest.
I’m asking you, as individuals with your own minds, to use your position as Tumblr staff for good. You know this is bad, for us as well as the site at large. If you keep doing this, many people are going to leave the site.
Silencing protest here will just cause people to go to different social media sites. And if that still doesn’t work, we’ll take to the streets instead. I know I will.
You don’t want to be on the wrong side of history just because you got bought out. Choose to back our wonderful internet, and rebel against the new corporate regime!
Thank you for reading this,
anonymous asked:
I see tons of advice for how to write first drafts, but what's your approach for writing second drafts (or third and fourth drafts, for that matter)? How do you turn a mess into something more structured and resembling a proper story? Also, how do you know when something's done and it's time to just stop and send it out? Thanks for your time.
Ok so you’ve done it! You’ve managed to get all the way through the first draft! Congratulations! But the work isn’t over, of course. Now you’ve got a whole pile of words and a whole ‘nother slog to turn it into something comprehensible.
Second drafts (my favourite part of the writing process) are a different type of work to the first draft. The first draft can be described as telling the story to yourself. You need the big strokes, the details of who does what and goes where, and to fumble through the plot arcs from beginning to end. The first draft has a lot of figuring out logistics so that in the second draft you can fill in detail, nuance and so that you can hone things to the best version of what they are.
Much like writing the first draft, everyone is going to approach the second draft slightly differently according to their personal preferences. But here’s how I do it.
Step one: Take a break!
Seriously. You’ve just spent a long time highly focussed on one thing, your brain needs the rest. The longer the piece the more of a break you need. For short stories I take a couple of days to a week, novellas a couple of weeks, novels, you could take a month or so. Give yourself time away.
Importantly, this is time to forget stuff about what you were working on – don’t panic when you read that by the way, you’ll still have all your notes, you’ll still have the broad strokes of what it is supposed to look like, but with any luck with some time away, you’ll have time to forget the stuff that isn’t important and that gives you trouble with the work. You’ll forget which parts you got stuck on thinking ‘I’m not good enough to write this’, or ‘that day I was writing badly, that chapter sucks!’
Take the time. Forget. Give yourself room to get excited about the project again.
Step two: Re-read!
Sit down and read the book through from start to finish. Approach it as though you’re reading a friend’s book. Take notes as you go, but only on the ‘big’ stuff. Does the plot hold together overall? Do characters make sense and ‘feel’ right? Are there plot lines, or characters that appear and then aren’t followed through? Are there obvious ‘mistakes’ that you should deal with?
Step three: Re-organise!
You might have noticed things in your read-through that seem out of order, or that if plot points were switched around or shifted on the timeline, they’d make more sense. If it’s a matter of picking up chapter seven and plunking it between chapters three and four, then do that now.
If not, then you’ll need to do more intensive reworkings. Draw up a timeline of the story from start to finish, and plot out the story in the new timeline, so that you can have an organised plan on how to go in and change stuff around.
NOTE: Do not work over your original files!
Keep a copy of the original draft. For each change that you make, create a new copy to work on. Keep track of the different versions that you’ve worked on, and BACK THEM ALL UP! You don’t want to set out reworking the whole story, realise you don’t like the new direction, and then have nothing to go back to.
Step four: Annotation!
When I say the second draft is my favourite draft, this is the step I mean. Personally, I print out the manuscript (A4, double spacing, wide margins), I staple each chapter into a booklet, and I go to town with colour coded pens and markers.
I go through chapter by chapter, and I note down the key point of the chapter, and map out the emotional and character arcs, and I jot down my ideas of how I can refine the execution of those things.
Then I go through each chapter, paragraph by paragraph, and I do the same.
What is the purpose of this paragraph?
How can it be executed in a more effective way?
What can be added to make this paragraph better?
And what can I cut that is clogging up the story?
Step five: Rewriting!
Open a new blank word document, and retype the story from your annotated copy.
Yes. Rewrite the whole thing.
You’ll end up getting creative with your wording, you’ll make connections that you hadn’t consciously thought of before, you’ll cut stuff that really isn’t important enough to bother retyping but that you would have felt bad about deleting. The rewrite is key.
Step six: Re-re-work!
At this point, you could probably do with another break from the manuscript, you could say step 6.0 is take a break, step 6.5 is re-re-work.
Just like in step one, take a step back, and read your story as though it was given to you by a friend. Take notes on any issues you find, think about how the prose flows, and how the plot works and if the characters are doing the things they should be doing.
You can go back and repeat any of the above steps if you find more problems that you want to deal with, you can even just go through this whole process a number of times until you’ve got something coherent.
Step seven: Review!
Time to get an outside perspective: ask a few people whose opinions you trust to read the manuscript. If there are particular elements of the story that you feel you need to work on more, you could ask them more pointed questions (did you feel like the protagonist’s actions in the middle bit are justified by what they experienced in the beginning? Etc), or you could ask them for their general thoughts and feelings as they read it.
Make it clear that you’re not looking for corrections on spelling, or grammar. Take note on the feedback you get, but don’t take any of it as gospel. What this is, is giving you the opportunity to see what some other people get from your story, and whether what you think it says lines up with what other people think it says, and how you feel about the convergence or divergence of those opinions.
NOTE:
While I’ve written this out as an orderly list, you will probably find that many manuscripts need more of some steps than of others. Some will probably need no re-organising, but will need a whole lot of work on the prose. Some might need complete reorganisation but the prose is fantastic already. You might find that some works need a lot added to them, while some benefit by being cut back severely. Each manuscript is going to be a different beast to work on.
All of this is what would be called ‘substantive editing’, that is, edits that involve content, structure and narrative. While it is fairly important for legibility that you’re working in as correct grammar and spelling as possible, it will not be perfect.
The second round of editing, once you have the work in pretty much the shape you want it, is line editing. Going through and giving your prose and word choices close attention, making sure that every sentence is pulling its weight.
The next round of editing, when the substantive and line edits are done, is the copy edit. You can attempt a copy edit yourself, but these are more usually done by professional editors either hired by the author, or as a part of the publishing process.
And that’s how I approach the second draft!
I hope that helps!
FFxiv Writers – 30 Day Writing Challenge 2017!
The FFxiv tumblr community is filled with so many talented writers! I know that November is high writing time for many of us with NaNoWriMo on the horizon, but for those of us who want to keep it a bit more simple – I propose a 30 day writing challenge!
What’s a 30 day writing challenge? :o
Why, it’s challenge in which you write in response to a daily prompt that I post here, of course!
Here’s how it works:
  1. Beginning Wednesday November 1st, I, @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast, will post one new writing prompt daily at 12:00pm (noon) PST. Check back daily for the latest prompt!
  2. You will write a short story, or scene, inspired by the daily prompt. You’re welcome to interpret the prompt in any way that you choose! Writing for different characters per prompt is just fine – but I do request that you stick to original characters that you own in the FFxiv universe.
  3. All entries posted and tagged with #FFxivWrite2017 by noon (PST) the following day will be counted towards a participation prize drawing.
  4. Entries posted after the daily cutoff is A OK! Catching up on prompts and writing at your own pace is encouraged. Just know that it won’t be counted towards the participation prize in the case of a later submissions. <3
  5. On Friday, December 1st, I’ll count up all the participation tallies, each day counting as one entry per writer, and draw a winner!
  6. The winner of the participation prize will receive a stylized black & white illustration of a scene depicted from one of their entries (winner’s choice!), drawn by yours truly! (Here’s #my art tag if you’re curious!).
Rules:
  1. You cannot submit things that you’ve already written – Even if the topic is the same. All entries must be new and freshly written for this challenge!
  2. No rough drafts and no redos – Relax! Use this as a low pressure opportunity to loosen up and de-rust your writing chops. No one will be judging your work for quality or length. The purpose is to get into the habit of writing daily. Don’t overthink it, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself! It’s all for fun!
  3. Tag all of your entries with #FFxivWrite2017 – Even if you’re late to the writing party. I’ll be using this tag to track daily participants, so if you don’t use it, I won’t find your entry! Please note that entries that include an external link (to a song, piece of art etc.) will not show up in the tag results. Tumblr hides all posts with external links from their tag feeds. :[
  4. Include the entry number in the title of your post – Example: “Entry #10: Your Title.” This helps me keep track of participating entries.
  5. You have until prompt #7 to back write for the participation prize – That means that if you discover the writing challenge a few days, or even a week after it’s started, you can still jump in and back write as many of the first 7 prompts as you want, and they’ll count as entries to the participation prize! After day 8, however, no back writing will be counted towards the prize. That being said, it is totally possible for someone with only 1 participation entry for the duration of the contest to be drawn as the participation prize winner so don’t give up due to lack of participation overall!
  6. Absolutely no griefing, harassing, or trolling other writers – This will earn you an automatic disqualification from the event.
  7. No writing for original characters that you do not own – Please do not write on behalf of other people’s characters. Stick to characters that you’ve created.
  8. Tag NSFW content with #NSFW – Similarly, if your entry contains graphic or violent content that may be triggering to others, please include a brief trigger warning at the top of your post. Be considerate of your readers!
What’s the purpose of this writing challenge?
To connect FFxiv writers, of all skill and experience levels, and to have fun sharing our work!
Whether you’re participating or not, consider checking out the #FFxivWrite2017 tag periodically after November 1st and like/reblog your favorite pieces. Show the FFxiv writing community some love!
NOTE: I reserve the right to opt out of drawing NSFW or potentially triggering content. If you’re drawn as the participation prize winner, please be willing to work with me a bit on choosing which scene to draw. Thank you!
I have been reading and reblogging some of your posts and wanted to thank you for that detailed account. I have been out of fandom for a while, and antis really baffled me at first. But now I have a question: Could you talk some more about how current antis relate back to the LJ social justice scene and when the morph from debating fanworks to dissing people happened? Thank you!
I’m glad you’ve been enjoying this blog!
I think this reddit post does a nice job of summarizing the history of fandom and how it’s led to our current point. But I’m going to go more into how tumblr’s very structure led to a ‘race to the bottom’ sort of enacting of punishment via social justice.
Almost all of this is from personal observation, having been here since late 2010.
To get more into the actual history of it: Racefail ‘09 is the name given to the big, public 2009 debates about racism in genre fiction (published fantasy and sci-fi), which happened primarily on livejournal and private websites. (Racefail was itself the result of the rising awareness of social justice in the real world thanks to the democratization of information via the internet.) Racefail raised a couple of big questions: were non-white (and non-straight/non-cis/non-male) creators being silenced and erased in published genre fiction? And were the stories being told primarily racist/sexist/homophobic and lacking in representation for non-white/Western cultures (and LGBT+/queer/female stories)?
From everything I’ve read I feel like a lot of good came out of these talks; in particular, it greatly raised the awareness of social justice in genre fiction and fandom spaces - which had been there before, but not quite so prominent.  But one major bad came out of it: it revealed, via the shitty behavior of one member of the genre fiction community, how social justice could easily be used as a silencing tactic by applying arguments meant to dismantle power structures to individuals who may (or may not!) benefit from those power structures.
Fast-forward to 2010-2012 tumblr. LJ has undergone multiple journal purges and partial restorations, been bought out by a Russian company, and - final straw - changed the way anonymous threaded posts were handled, ending its value as a space for anon memes like kinkmemes. Fandom dispersed. A not-insignificant number of us eventually end up on tumblr, and those of us coming from LJ have brought with us a greater awareness of social justice, particularly lgbt/queer culture and feminism.
At the same time, Facebook has opened its doors to everyone instead of only allowing college students to use it. Facebook has almost single-handedly popularized the notion of making your offline life publicly available online.  Gone are the days of keeping your age, real name, and offline identity hidden; we share everything except maybe last names and exact locations.
Tumblr democratizes the fandom experience like never before. Livejournal and forums had moderators; tumblr has none.  Communities are gone - instead we have tags where people gather to talk about shared interests. People who previously felt shut out, forced to be ‘lurkers’ because they had nothing to say, could now have a blog and share the work of others via reblogging. The main way to gain social capital is by having the most followers and therefore the most widespread content.
But tumblr is a weird experience compared to other blogging sites because at the time it was the only one with a ‘reblog’ function. any one post can go absolutely viral and the people who see it beyond your immediate circle will lack the context of the rest of your blog. This means that either every single post needs to be entirely self-contained … or get wildly misunderstood. (Guess which one happens.) It also means that that the posts that spread the fastest and furthest are the short, witty ones or - you guessed it - the controversial ones. Finally, people tend to not fact-check - if something is interesting and seems believable, people reblog it uncritically. Tumblr’s dashboard structure actively encourages people to not leave their dash to look at provided external links - you’ll lose your ‘place’ on your endless-scrolling dash, and the little ‘home’ button in the corner is reminding you how many new posts have been created since you last refreshed. You don’t have time to fact-check.
Controversy without context is polarizing - without the original context, people provide their own context and agree or disagree based on a bunch of assumptions. Tumblr is a breeding ground for this. Opinions don’t get more nuanced - they get more vitriolic, more sharp and quick-witted.  And with people not bothering to fact-check or click linked information, misinformation spreads like wildfire.
The early experience of fandom on tumblr is one of widespread acceptance. Possibly because FB does this, people feel safe to share their age, sexuality, and gender on their tumblr profiles - and those identities get more and more specific as people learn more about gender identities and sexual orientations that are off the gender binary. People spread educational posts about queer/LGBT+ culture, feminist theory, and racism alongside fandom posts.  The importance of minority representation in the media is a hot topic and posts that criticize media for their lack of (or bad) representation get thousands of notes. Social justice theory - fighting the appropriation of colonized cultures by imperialists, promoting the voices of the oppressed over those of the privileged, the right to be angry because of the oppression and trauma you’ve experienced, not tone-policing people who have been hurt, and not erasing the experiences of others - are widely discussed.
A lot of good came out of this, too, but I believe a natural backlash resulted. Earnestly working to promote the voices of the least privileged and trying to avoid silencing or erasure, what started as an effort to even out the social strata gradually became a kind of reversed social strata. People who were oppressed on any axis could not be corrected by anybody of lesser oppression - it was considered to be silencing. People could not say their feelings had been hurt by a marginalized person’s word choice - that was tone policing.
And this led to a secondary, and probably lesser conclusion: people who identified as ‘privileged’ - that is, white, cis, straight, mentally well, able-bodied, (and male) - felt guilty for all the privilege they had. and the promotion of marginalized voices over their own - the tendency to tell people, regardless of the validity of their points, that if they were privileged their voice did not matter - to escape their privilege, at least on tumblr.
I think we hit Peak Tumblr in 2012-2013-ish. Non-human and nonbinary identities proliferated. Asexuality awareness exploded, as did other lesser-known sexualities and paraphilias.  People wondered what it meant to be trans in a world with no gender binary. People self-diagnosed severe mental illnesses.  And this unto itself wasn’t a bad thing!   Probably many people learned a lot about themselves from the openness and acceptance.
However: there’s no way to know how much of this was from people self-discovering and how much was from people who realized that unless they had some axis of oppression they could point to they could be silenced.  And people were extremely open about these identities as well: despite all of the talk about social awareness, interactions on tumblr suggested that most people still assumed that everyone else was white, cis, straight, able-bodied and mentally well (and therefore completely unaware of social issues and in need of education). And due to how tumblr’s reblogging system could separate posts entirely from the context of the original poster’s blog and personal details, this assumption happened a lot!
Whatever the actual numbers of people who were self-discovering versus self-deluding, this extreme acceptance got its own natural backlash. It wasn’t possible for everyone on tumblr to be oppressed, but everyone on tumblr seemed to be finding some way to be marginalized - they weren’t cis, they were ‘a demigirl’. They weren’t straight, they were ‘gray asexual’.   There had to be some way to distinguish the real marginalized people from the fakers.*
Enter gatekeeping - which seems reasonable enough at first, given the sheer number of people who are claiming to be part of the marginalized club. People start making fun of ‘transtrenders’ and ‘starselves’ and say ‘heteroromantic demisexuals’ are ‘just normal’.  People call one another ‘cishet’ specifically to erase their gender identity/sexual orientation.
This environment makes tumblr ripe for radfems, who greatly benefit from people putting limits on what identities other people can have. And radfems feed the gatekeeping mentality, leading to more and more policing of one another on tumblr instead of acceptance.  Instead of trusting others to be honest about their gender identity, sexual orientation, race or mental health, people increasingly decide the identity and experiences of others based on whether or not they say and do the right things.  Conversely, if you say or do the wrong things you are ostracized and your identity is erased using the reverse social strata of tumblr: ’cishet’ becomes shorthand for ‘ignorant asshole’ - and ignorant assholes are not to be listened to.
One no longer has to identify wrongly to have the wrong identity to be worth listening to. One only has to do the wrong thing.
So how does this tie back to debating fanworks vs dissing people?  Well: tumblr isn’t just the home of social justice. It’s also the home of fandom, and these two spaces heavily overlap.
Like our genre fiction friend that I mentioned back at the beginning of this long-ass post, tumblr had already begun - with the best of intentions - to silence people for having the wrong level of marginalization.  And when radfems and gatekeepers entered the scene, one’s level of marginalization became a function of how you behaved.  Now you had to behave right to have the right to be listened to - and fanworks, far from being the exception, are the rule for determining if people behave ‘right’ in fandom spaces.
In other words: debating fanworks/fan opinions and dissing people have become the same thing.  If a fanwork is for the wrong pairing, that makes a person a bad person.  And bad people are only able to create bad fanworks.
This attitude is how you get things like ‘if you ship [x] you’re straight’ and ‘oh, you ship [x], your opinion on this unrelated social justice issue is invalid’ or ‘i’m not surprised to find that this person is [x]-phobic, they created problematic fanworks.’
And that’s where we’re at today.
Man this is much. I’m sorry for your eyes.
*And in case it isn’t obvious, I think policing sexual orientations and gender identities is nonsense - demigirls and gray-ace people count as much as everyone else.
hey, so... why is it that communism is so... inaccessible? is this a reflection of a larger issue or is my reading comprehension just utter shit? i've been trying in earnest to get a GOOD grasp on my politics by sifting through more theory (and trying to use tumblr to decode) and i'm just starting to feel like there isn't a place within the radical community for those of us who struggle academically. sorry if this is a weird ask. im just frustrated w myself and feeling stupid
(contd) like weeks ago i literally saw a prominent communist blogger brag abt their level of education as a way to one-up someone in an argument and for some reason that set off this weird wave that’s snowballed into the hot mess i left you below -_-
There are many reasons for the problem here. I should start by saying that communism is absolutely not inaccessible, and we do ourselves a major disservice when we allow the claim to be made that it is. It simply is not the case. I will explain this claim later, but I want to lay it out first to be very clear. Arguments about the accessibility of left theory, writing, and language are usually full of a lot of nonsense on both sides- on the one hand are people who use obnoxious jargon where it is not only not necessary, but actively dilutes meaning or is just useless, and on the other hand are people who start reading Marx, get confused, and decide that the problem lies within the text itself and that leftists are all snobs.
So when we ask ourselves about accessibility, we need to first understand what the term even references- here almost all arguments about the inaccessibility of communism begin to break down. Accessibility is typically understood as how easy something is to do or understand, with or without assistance; for instance, a building is inaccessible to people who use wheelchairs if there is no ramp to its entrance. But there are limitations to understanding it this way. If I walk into an advanced calculus course the day before the final exam as someone who knows jack shit about calculus, and start screaming that the course is inaccessible because I don’t understand what’s going on, I’m making an ass of myself. For one thing there, the people there (doing that which I want to be able to do, in this case) have been doing the work for months to prepare for this moment, and for another they are using terms which are particular to that field of study- of course I don’t speak this language, of course I don’t understand the theories at play. I haven’t done the work. And this is something a lot of people fail to understand- I was a Democrat 6 years ago! Almost every leftist you know (especially more prominent bloggers on here) came from a background where they knew nothing about socialism and learned about it, and in fact many came from strongly right wing backgrounds before encountering socialist work. We have all done this work- none of us are or will ever be finished learning, but we weren’t born with an encyclopedic understanding of socialist theory. So to step into a conversation between people and demand that it be explained to you is just that- it is a demand on your part for entrance into a conversation which did not previously involve you.
I’m going to continue the calculus class metaphor for a while because it is useful. What is accessible to me depends in large part on what I already know when I step into the room. For instance, if I don’t even know basic algebra I’ll be extremely lost. If I have done well in pre-calc classes, I will be less lost. If I grew up deeply interested in math, in a family where we played math games for fun, I’d be much more comfortable. So I’ll wager that you understand basically the concepts of a social contract, of free market principles and supply and demand, or to extend the scope here concepts like tabula rasa, constitutionalism, protectionism. These are not unparticular concepts and terms! But they’re taught to you in high school, so you don’t see them as inaccessible. You are surrounded by liberal values and theories on a daily basis, immersed in them, so that even though you were born knowing nothing of liberalism, you probably know a fair bit about liberal and capitalist ideologies, theories, and functions. I’ll bet you’ve read some of the constitution, even if in small bits, and you read it with a teacher guiding the discussion of it and leading you through the language and concepts. Odds are good that you’ve read some (carefully selected) Adam Smith, or the Federalist Papers, and so on. All of those works and concepts use language you have to learn, ideas you have to understand, that are particular but seem universal.
I mention teachers because they’re critical here- what teachers do is WORK. Breaking an idea down, laying out the history of it, explaining core concepts and terms, and then feeding them to you in a way personally tailored for you to be able to understand is WORK, and it is not easy work that everybody can do. Of course, making revolution, building bridges, bringing more people into contact with socialist theory, these are all works in which socialists and communists need to be engaged- this is work that needs doing. But when you ask someone to do this for you, and you ask impolitely and with the assumption that they are a bad person if they decline (not you personally, broadly) even though this person has a whole life outside of their computer and probably school and/or work to attend to, you’re displaying some uncomfortable and very rude entitlement to somebody else’s time and labor. This person is typically a stranger. And despite what many people think, you don’t have the right to like or understand any post on anyone’s blog- it’s not a blog for -you- and it is not rude to acknowledge this. I use this blog to talk to friends, and to sketch out ideas and have people react to them, and to react to other people’s ideas as well. But I’m never obligated to make this blog accessible to an individual person, and with a blog this size it would be impossible to do this for every person. That doesn’t mean I don’t try and just say “Aw who cares” but this is a choice that I make because I want to and I can, not because I have to. So when somebody makes a post on their own blog that does not mention you, and it is reblogged by somebody else who’s interested in that conversation, and you poke your head in and go “I can’t read this OP” you’re being rude and entitled, and you’ll likely be treated accordingly. When you make requests for someone to explain something to you, you should do it kindly because you are asking for a favor- and trust me, sometimes it is very HARD to explain something without using particular concepts. “Hegemony” is not just “hierarchy,” “dialectics” is not just a term to be used for any relationship between two things, etc.
So, what to do? The first step is just sitting down with whatever text you are working on, a dictionary open, and some reading guides if possible. God only knows how many reading guides there are for Capital, and there are YouTube videos on many socialist concepts, and many of the prominent socialist writers write in very clear language- Marx was, frankly, a fairly disorganized writer, but anarchists Emma Goldman and Kropotkin, Lenin, and Luxemburg, and Mark Fisher (I tell eeeeeeeeveryone to read “Capitalist Realism” because it is a very short, fast, and easy read) are all writers I think are pretty approachable to get the basic concepts at play and then build on those. And once you do that, many many bloggers will be happy to share their opinion on such and such piece, or help clarify what a writer meant by using a certain phrase. But you need to make the attempt first, and then ask for clarification- for most people, this is a better way of learning, and for most of the people who’d be responding to you it’s a much easier task than giving their understanding of a whole text. But start by googling some terms, concepts, theories, and ask the people around you what they think of them. Bounce ideas off the people around you and you will be able to learn from each other. Also keep in mind that there’s huge disagreement among different factions of the left and this will show up in how we think and write and that’s fine- seek out many viewpoints and understandings and reach out to people to help you when they can.
