Canon ‘verse Dean and Cas talking about feelings

read it here on AO3!

“Cas, I just - I don’t think we can do this,” Dean says.

And Cas, sitting beside him in shotgun, tastes loss in his mouth. He stares straight ahead.

He’s been waiting for this, if he’s honest with himself. It was too good to be true. He and Dean have been - things have been different between them, recently. They’ve been saying more, showing more. It’s been filling a part of Cas that he hadn’t even understood was aching and empty, until suddenly it wasn’t.

But now…

“It’s - you know, we got jobs to do,” Dean says. Outside, the night rolls past. They’re driving home to the bunker, shopping bags in the back. The trip was domestic, even sweet; but at the check-outs, Cas saw Dean’s face. He’d known that something was shifting. He’d known that there was trouble to come.

“Jobs?” he manages.

“Yeah, Cas, jobs. We got the world to save. Half the time we’re throwing ourselves under the bus so it won’t drive off the cliff, and that’s good, because the bus won’t crash, but…” He pauses; Cas says nothing. “But - God, Cas, it’s so much harder to throw yourself under the bus when you got someone out there who makes you think you shouldn’t have to.”

My sisters been sending your (amazingly) written metas, but I'm still confused as to what "Performance!Dean" is. Could you explain? ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hi! Thank you!

Performing!Dean is a tag that many of us use to explain the way that Dean portrays himself to the outside world, suppressing parts of himself that he doesn’t think should be outwardly shown.

It’s a form of SUBLIMATION (a psychological term meaning to repress emotions / a part of oneself), a term which he actually uses in 12x05.

It’s a great example. The writers KNOW that we associate Dean’s love of pie with women / being comfortable / the home and family feeling, and cake with the repressed side of him (it is repeatedly used in this context, Dean really wanting it but never allowing himself to have it or just nibbling at the edges). It’s quite a famously known concept.

So… when Sam asks Dean if he wants pie and Dean says no, which basically never happens, when Sam then looks so DONE and starts talking about how Mary is gone and… (the implication being he is about to mention Cas being gone too)… then Dean says nope nope I am FINE and Sam FINALLY calls Dean out on it, saying “Dean, it’s called SUBLIMATION”.

And Dean finally relents and says “Yeah, its kinda my thing”. (And then later in the diner he is seen to have eaten a whole slice of cake in front of Sam and no-one makes a big deal out of it….)

WE ALL SCREAMED. DEAN ACTUALLY IN THE SCRIPT, OUT LOUD, HAS SAID THAT HE SUBLIMATES.

Because THIS is Dabb again taking what has been IN THE SCRIPT and in the show for 12 years and building on it, making it BLATANT. Because we are building to endgame now, SPN isn’t likely to last past season 13-14, so the character arcs that were set up in season 1 (and 4 for Cas) need to be tied up, so we, the audience NEED it to be made obvious when it has just been in the subtext. THAT IS WHY SO MUCH IS SO BLATANT THIS SEASON. Ie Performing!Dean, Destiel, Sam and the MoL story, Mary being the catalyst for Dean’s self acceptance arc and Sam’s self forgiveness arc around Lucifer (which I think will be much more blatant next season re: Jack as his mirror).

With Performing!Dean it started to be made a bit more obvious since Sam told Dean that he was ‘kind of butch’ and people probably thought he was ‘overcompensating’ in season 2 but it still stayed subtext, Dean checking out a few guys here and there, only really getting with women when he was having his ‘I’m going to go to Hell and need comfort’ or ‘Sam is dead, Cas left’ moments or since he met Cas, whenever Cas had left, making Dean feel crappy and rejected or had just DIED, using it as a coping mechanism, even blatantly role playing in season 9 after he feels so bad about kicking Cas out of the bunker etc to the point that in 12x18 it is so blatant that this is what it is about, they even have Dean saying outloud that he is settling for Sam’s omelette mere seconds after clearly having settled for the waitress because she wasn’t what he really wanted on top of all the other give aways…

Anyway, it’s not just about his sexuality or feelings for Cas, there are many other aspects too, and those are the ones that are cemented in seasons 1-3. Most of these seem all to stem from John and if you see snippets from John’s journal it makes sense.

John says he is proud of Dean when he kills monsters, womanises, drinks etc etc. So guess what a young impressionable Dean learned was the best way to act in life?

Now, over the years bits have come out here and there. Every time we see Dean with a sexual partner he has been the submissive one, he is clearly an extremely giving lover and very caring. He is not a dude bro womaniser at heart, he cares for all the women he sleeps with enough to be kind and gentle with them, even the waitress in 12x18 who really he doesn’t REALLY CARE about, she’s just a coping mechanism, but he is still extremely sweet with her.

He drinks for years of course, he is a functioning alcoholic for most of the show, but lately he has switched to coffee… unless something really bad is going down. Like when we saw the empty bottle in his room in 12x19…

He listens to old rock music because it reminds him of his mom and dad, not because he is a real metal head. Yeah absolutely he loves it too I’m sure, but really it’s the emotional pull. And we haven’t heard him do so since 12x07. Just saying. He also admits to liking Taylor Swift in season 10, after firstly saying HELL NO, same with the cucumber water in 12x07. It’s not the music or the water or whatever as such, that is absolutely NOT what we are saying is making us feel Dean is bisexual or has a hidden side to himself, its the fact that he HIDES it first then admits to it afterwards, that is the essence of Performing!Dean.

When Sam drinks the cucumber water, no-one batted an eyelid, that means nothing to us, because Sam is super comfortable with who he is in THIS respect, even though he carries guilt etc, but that is another subject. But because Dean made a huge deal about how uncool and basically unmanly it was, after all we know of him over the years, THEN went and drank it anyway, saying “shut up” when Sam is like “seriously?!” THAT is where the Performing!Dean meta comes from. And Sam is the same as us, he doesn’t care if Dean is bi, or if he likes Taylor Swift or cucumber water or WHATEVER, what he DOES care about is the fact that Dean feels the need to hide it from him.

There are so many small points along the series that point to a lot of Dean’s persona being fake or exaggerated and how sometimes Sam knows and sometimes he doesn’t, it would be funny if it wasn’t tragic.

Deep down Dean Winchester is a soft, kind and generous soul who just wants to be loved and to help people.

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT WE SAW IN 12x11. THIS IS THE EXPOSITION EPISODE FOR PERFORMING!DEAN AND THE CORE OF THIS WHOLE SEASON BECAUSE THE WHOLE SEASON HAS BEEN ABOUT THIS, WHICH IS WHY 12x22 IS THE CHARACTER LED FINALE, BECAUSE IT IS WHERE THIS FINALLY COMES DOWN.

So yeah, the fact of the matter is that Performing!Dean has been there all along, since the PILOT, over the years it has been showed to us that it exists then some of the walls have started coming down. If anyone dares to tell me that Performing!Dean isn’t a thing (which I was told earlier this season, lmao) then I will kindly point them towards 12x11 and 12x22.

Also, let us not forget that even though 12x11 was mostly an exposition for Performing!Dean when he lost his memories, again harking back to the HEART is the person, NOT their memories theme of the season, we also were given the golden snippet that DEAN RODE LARRY BEFORE HE GOT WACKED WITH MAGIC. This is to show us that Dean’s walls are coming down this season. When Sam called him up on it in a way that seemed to be taking the piss, Dean, rather than attempt to deny or tell him to shut up actually embraced it and gloated about how GOOD he was at it. ATTA BOY DEAN!

With the resurrection of Mary and Dean’s near - complete death experience it seems that Dean got to the point in season 12 where he just didn’t want to hide from himself anymore and so let these walls down further, there were small snippets of this in nearly EVERY episode.

12x11 was the exposition for casual viewers to see this side of him more clearly (in the same way that 12x19 was for Dean and Cas’s clearly more than platonic relationship, which will not be built on with HUGE LEGO BRICKS since Cas died), and now with the grenade launcher as a metaphor, Dean literally blew down his walls in 12x22. The culmination of this story was his confrontation with Mary where he explains WHY he always had this facade, because he had a shitty childhood, had to be a parent to Sam and that it wasn’t FAIR and he didn’t cope with it well at all.

So. There we have it. Performing!Dean is REAL, it was there ALL ALONG, we were RIGHT in seeing it because it is confirmed in 12x11 and then addressed and to some extent dismantled in 12x22, and the meta idea that the grenade launcher is associated with Performing!Dean was ALSO used.

Just… wowzers.

I don’t expect Dean to suddenly act completely differently now, he won’t, there are just some aspects of him that will be slightly more obvious or he won’t hide certain parts of himself. He still isn’t completely done with this, as Jensen himself said that there will be more of this to come in season 13…

I expect him to perhaps once or twice order a slice of cake or an ice cream sundae, to listen to the radio and not turn it over if a pop song comes on, to be more open with his feelings towards his family (and yeah, Destiel is a part of this for sure), a nice turn around but also not jarring, because it’s just a PART of Dean, not his whole self, a lot of what we see is really fully him, so it’s not that he is going to completely radically change!

Anyway, its all very exciting as the metaphorical death of Performing!Dean is just a part of what most of us see as a positive endgame for TFW and it is all looking pretty good so far :D

destielisgonnabecanon  asked:

hey there, i'm writing an essay about how destiel is real for a friend of mine and I was wondering what you think the most important pieces of meta that i should put in? can you recommend anything?

Hi - wow, that’s some dedication. All I did for my friends was send them some links - and, on one memorable occasion, I spent one entire 30 minutes conversation occasionally glancing at my (female&blinded by heteronormativity) friend’s lips instead of looking at her eyes, and by the end of it she was uncomfortable af and half convinced I was into her, and that’s when I presented her with a list of gifsets like -

- and basically dropped my mic and sashayed out.

(Man, I wish my hair was long enough to be flicked back.)

She changed her mind after that, by the way. And it’s really weird how most behaviours and gestures are used on screen precisely because we understand them as human things we all do on a deep level, and yet we’re suddenly unable to figure out what they mean if they’re not about a man and a woman. Uh.

(That applies to me as well, by the way. We see what we know about, not what is actually there, and that’s just inevitable - but can be unlearned, with some patience and many, many mistakes.)

Anyway, here are a bunch of things - I hope they’re useful.

Also, the entire S8, which was basically a demented Jane Eyre AU, and the entire S11, because, again, that Amara thing didn’t make sense without Destiel subtext, and finally @deanswingsbothways’ drunken rant (spoiler: contains the line “Destiel is not a story we are telling each other. Destiel is a story we are being told.” and bless).

You should also consider pimping your essay a bit, because there are a lot of posts and gifsets about how Destiel is regularly paralleled with canon couples on Supernatural, or follows the same rules as romantic relationships in movies. Here’s a bunch of them: Destiel and Sam/JessDestiel vs Dean/AnnaDestiel vs Sam/Amelia, Destiel vs David/VioletDestiel and Spuffy, Destiel and Clexa, Destiel and Phoebe/ColeDestiel vs Charlie/Gilda, Destiel vs every other couple on SupernaturalDestiel and Lucifer having funDestiel and romantic movies, Destiel and the Doctor, Destiel and Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Destiel and Tangled, Destiel and Saileen, and, of course, the beautiful and despairing trainwreck that was Repo Man.

And finally, there was that one time I went crazy and spent an entire weekend mapping every single love trope they’ve ever used around those two idiots in love, because I was just that fed up and the thing’s there, okay, and the more they say it’s not the more layers of tropes and mirrors and longing glances and narrative parallels they keep slathering on top of this thing, so, whatever and who even knows. At this point, you’re free to say it’ll never go canon because they’re homophobic or assume their audience is homophobic, and you’re free to say it’ll never go canon because of internal narrative reasons (God knows both Dean and Cas are never going to believe they’re actually good enough for each other), but to say there’s nothing there at all - that’s beyond whatever.

Anyway, my post is here, and these were the final conclusions:

As you may have guessed, this is something I’m sort of interested in - I came for the monsters and started to reblog stuff out of spite when I realized I was being treated like a crazy fangirl who sees love everywhere because women (right). If you’re looking for more sugary goodness, I tag stuff as destiel, spn meta (my own opinions), awesome meta (other people’s opinions), love tropes and parallels, and you can also have a look at some excellent meta writers who have eyes and therefore see Destiel and sometimes discuss it - people like @elizabethrobertajones, @grey2510, @tinkdw, @bluestar86, @mittensmorgul, @floralmotif, @k-vichan, @treefrogie84, @thevioletcaptain or @postmodernmulticoloredcloak (and I know I’m forgetting someone - that’s what sleeping four hours does to you, sorry). So, again - I know this post is a bit ‘join our cult’ (which is what you asked for, but still), but really - what I like about this fandom is that we can talk about stuff and we can disagree about stuff and still be friends, but this new idea currently spreading in the real world like wildfire - that not only you can have your own opinions (totally legit), but you can also have your own facts - nope. I hope your friend reads your essay (you’re welcome to share it, by the way) and sees that yes, there’s objectively something going on. If they still don’t, the final test is, “What if Cas were a woman? Would you see it then?”

(And we all know the answer to that question, don’t we?)

Seriously, good luck.

EDIT - More great meta

Ever since the night Cas told you parts of your soul were gone, you’d withdrawn from everyone. Dean hadn’t pushed you, even though you could tell he desperately wanted you to open up to him about whatever it was you were feeling. The absolute truth of it was, you weren’t sure what it was you were feeling. It was all so overwhelming; being thrust back into a world you knew nothing about.

Sam was right, you were good at research. You’d spent most days holed up in your room with your laptop relearning how to be a hunter. When night fell, you’d wait until you were sure everyone was asleep or at the very least in their own rooms and creep out into the library to read more lore. You fully invested yourself in it. You wanted to be a hunter again.

“Y/N?” Cas’ figure cast a shadow in the library and you lifted your head from your research, giving him a half smile. “Are you alright?”

“No.” You whispered, mostly to yourself. Cas was there instantly, sitting next to you and resting his hand on top of yours. “Why are you being so nice to me?”

Cas smiled and laced his fingers with yours. “Well, first and foremost, we were great friends. You understood me in a way nobody else ever did. You read people…and angels…well. I don’t know if that’s something you’ve noticed.” You nodded and huffed a laugh. “Second, I promised your father once that I’d look out for you. I failed once. I don’t intend to do it again.”

“Failed me how?” You questioned. “A lot of people feel like they failed me. People die. You can’t prevent it. It just happens.”

Never Say Never (Part 12)

Pairing: Arthur (Mr.) Ketch x Reader
Word Count: 750
Warnings: Smut. Unprotected sex.
Sequel: Part 12/12 of  Never Say Never

Special thanks to @lucis-unicorn for helping so much with this every step of the way.

I have to get sappy and say thank you to everyone who has read, liked, commented, reblogged, and sent asks and messages about this story.

When I wrote the first chapter as a smutty little one shot it was to indulge my fantasy and to try and sway a friend to climb in my lonely trashcan with me (it worked by the way).   It turned into a chapter story for fun.

I had no idea a chapter story about a minor character that was created to be disliked (as of right now) would do so well but the feedback has blown my mind.

People have sent me songs that remind them of this story.  People have told me I’ve inspired them to try writing.  I’ve even had several people say that this story changed their opinion on the character in the show.

I am so thankful and I don’t feel like I can properly express just how much this has meant to me. Nothing I have ever written has had this much love and feedback.

I may come back with a sequel at some point and in the mean time feel free to send in some one shot requests.

And now on to the last chapter….

Story:
-Reader POV-

It had been the same almost every hunt recently. Dean asking me to stay behind. Hold down the fort, help with research instead of with the battle. It was his way of keeping me safe. Making sure he wouldn’t lose me to some monster, or demon, or anything else out there.

When I met the Winchester brothers, they knew exactly who I was. In fact, the only hunter feared more than those two, was yours truly. I was meticulous, and dangerous, and loved every minute of my job. That never put the boys off though. No, instead, it only drove us closer. Especially Dean.

Lately though, it seemed every argument that we had, was surrounding my safety.

“We just don’t want anything to happen to you.” Dean said softly, trying to calm me down.

“I know how to take care of myself Dean! Damn it, I was the best damn hunter in the states! Now, just because I’m with you, suddenly it’s too dangerous for me to be out there?!”

Sooo do you think something will happen between Castiel and Kelly? I just saw the promo pictures and just.. the way she looked at him?? I'm probably totally off but do you think something's there? Oh, and do you think Cas will steal the colt from Sam and Dean? I personally hope not but Im kinda thinking he will.. Anyways, I know this is all just spec, just wanted to hear your thoughts :)

Can we as a fandom just agree to not even ask out loud if things are going to be a romance just because male and female characters are smiling at each other in promo stuff? Kelly could well just be smiling because someone’s treating her with common human decency and Cas is one heck of a trade up from Dagon in that respect.

I mean you might not seriously have meant it like you’re already dead certain it’s happening and you’re in the pits of despair about it already when you asked, but people get panicky and weird about it and Kelly’s already deeply unpopular, as far as I can tell on a scale of “I want her to get stabbed 1000 times before the end of the season” (almost direct paraphrase of something I’ve seen said about her) to “meh” and I know I’m only at “meh” myself just because this storyline is not exactly interesting and told so far 100% through Buckleming episodes, and this will be the first one with other writers actually seriously handling it, outside of the 3 scenes Perez got with Cas in 12x15 that didn’t even have Kelly in…

If nothing else I don’t want to have my inbox turn into the “are Kelly and Cas gonna hook up while she’s 8 and a half months preggers with Lucifer’s baby” debunking centre, which it inevitably does when someone starts saying things, even innocently or half-jokingly or prodding a bad thought that won’t leave them alone. I mean, at this point is anyone genuinely worried about these things? I kind of assume you aren’t because you seem quite chill despite all that (I mean compared to the wailing and gnashing of teeth this sort of panic can get to - you’re not exactly threatening to quit watching over it :P), and I don’t blame you but now I have to have a post on my blog with “will something happen between Cas and Kelly” in it, and if I don’t answer it, then someone else might go “AAAH WHAT IF LIZZY IS WRONG? WHY DIDN’T SHE ANSWER PROPERLY WITH A LONG REASSURING EXPLANATION OF CHARACTER ARCS AND ROMANCE TROPES” or whatever and go haring off to someone else’s inbox, and by Thursday evening little Cas n Kelly fires are starting up all over the place.

I mean for all I know because I just woke up and rolled out of bed, looked at the pics that Mel had helpfully sent me, stuck them in my queue, looked at my inbox, and you might be bouncing off someone ELSE’S blog with a comment of “Oh no it looks like Cas and Kelly are about to have a thing” in the tags or a random shitpost or ANOTHER worried anon and you didn’t like their tone of voice and thought “Lizzy usually says something sensible I’ll go check with her…” and I’m already 12 steps removed from Patient 0 of the outbreak

I’m completely fed up of mass panics :P I remember just being a big enough blog to get asks when 10x07′s promo dropped with the Hannah and Cas kiss in it and everyone was screaming and setting the room on fire and… Blergh, we know how well that worked out for Hannah. >.> I mean for all we know she came back in a male vessel BECAUSE they thought the panic was a bit OTT (Berens got yelled at and had to make as non-spoilery cryptic “it’s okay” comment as he could on Twitter after getting smacked in the face with the panic) and maybe they didn’t want people to imply she had a chance with Cas and that’s not what they were telling with her, and all the rest was a side effect of not casting a woman to act as the vessel for Hannah’s brief return…

For now I will assume the last thing on EARTH Kelly wants to do is kindle something with another angel while she’s being killed from the inside by her creepy angel baby and Cas is a sweetie pie who is kind to people but also still harbours the universe’s biggest crush on Dean so probably isn’t going to get over him very easily no matter how grumpy Dean acts towards him in relief that Cas hasn’t turned up dead in a ditch and was just not answering his phone for mysterious reasons.

Also he’s totally going to make off with the Colt because he’s like the last character standing who hasn’t stolen it from the Winchesters, and now I look at it like this, Bela spent half of season 3 wandering around in a trenchcoat stealing the Colt from them so I am going to be quite amused at the narrative symmetry if he does that.

(I don’t know - until we have a real clue of how Heaven is or isn’t controlling/manipulating him, I don’t really want to guess on his motives. Maybe it’s a Grand Gesture from Dean to let him hold it. Maybe he’s run off with it. Maybe it’s maybelline :P I hate not knowing and yet trying to talk about it like I do, so I really can only queue up potential scenarios, and never stick with one I like or will root for but generally have like, 12.)

anonymous asked:

I saw one of your tags say that you're not sure Sam would be ok with Destiel and I'm curious why. Do you think it'd be like the Benny situation again or something else? I didn't ship Denny but I don't think Sam likes when someone else comes before him in Dean's eyes. (I can't see Sam not liking Desitle as a homophobic thing, but ya never know.) Anyway I'm genuinely curious because I could see Sam not exactly like a shipper but ultimately ok with it.

Hi! I have to say, I’m always torn when I hear about people reading my tags, because on the one hand I’m vain and prideful and they’re written to be read, but on the other, tagging is like talking to yourself, so - *blushes slightly*.

Anyway, first things first - before I discovered what a fandom was, I was a total sucker for shipper!Sam. My doubts didn’t begin until after I’d read a shitload of fanfiction about it, and something really rotten in my brain was like, What if Sam wasn’t okay with it, though? because I always like to be contrary and to turn things on their heads and see how they work and if they still work. So I’ve got no real problems with shipper!Sam. It’s just - I sometimes wonder - generally when I’m writing myself - what would be more interesting from a narrative point of view - if it’d be better to have Sam in the background, hanging up mistletoe and leaving The letter of the day is B leaflets around the Bunker or if it’d be easier for Dean to have something to push against. I think a case could be made either way - but if TPTB would have wanted to go down that first road, they probably wouldn’t have killed off Charlie, since she would have been (and she probably was) an even better shipper and wingman than Sam.

That said, I have two arguments against shipper!Sam.

One: Sam is way more messed up than he lets on, and some part of it is terrified not only that Dean will walk away, but that Dean will fall in love with someone and actually pursue that. I know I’ve seen this discussion go down somewhere, but I honestly don’t remember who first came up with this - apologies, guys - the fact that Sam is an all or nothing kind of guy. Like, when he went to Stanford, that was it - he never contacted John, or even Dean, again. For years. And the same happened when he was with Amelia - he just - I don’t know, cut himself off? I’m not sure if it’s his personality, or a by-product of his less than ideal childhood, but Sam’s got trouble to let people into his life, and once they’re in, it’s like there isn’t room for anyone else? Which is a childish trait, of course, and it signals a lack of emotional maturity on his part (not surprising - poor Sammy). And since Sam tends to relate with other people through his own experiences, part of him surely assumes Dean’s exactly the same; that if Dean found himself a new best friend, or a better hunting partner, or even a spouse of some kind, he’d just walk away and that would be it. So in this sense, Sam would feel threatened by any relationship Dean could potentially develop, not only by Cas.

Two, we used to see Sam as the shades of grey brother, but the amazing thing about this show is that Sam and Dean went through a lot of character development resulting in them almost swapping the roles they had in the first seasons - and yet all this feels natural and completely believable. So these days, Dean’s more likely to be the one who gives monsters a pass (hell, look at his relationship with Crowley), while Sam’s become sort of judgemental and what needs must. I think it was Ruby, most of all, who scarred Sam from the inside out and made him so much more conservative, or pragmatic (like, look at him now - he’s more willing than Dean to work with the BMoL, because he’s Mr Head Choice or something). Sam took a huge risk in liking and trusting Ruby, and it all hinged on a sort of anti-racism argument - an I don’t care if she’s a demon, because even demons can be nice and Our biology doesn’t determine our destiny and whatever else. Dean had shut him down about this, of course, but Sam had persisted - and I know there were other elements at play here, but to me, the central point was exactly this: a pigheaded and generous and noble willingness to trust a creature you don’t understand at all and you’ve got no reason to trust. Now, of course things are different with Cas, because Cas has proven, time and again, that Dean’s safety would be his number one priority and all that, but I’m still not convinced Sam would actively want that for Dean. After all, Sam’s seen this other, softer side of Dean’s - he’s seen him around kids (he remembers him from their shared childhood) and he’s heard (a bit) about how happy he was with Robin and whatever, so I sometimes feel Sam still wants the Sookie ending for Dean: a chance to have a true family of his own, and a life Dean could finally lead in full view of everybody, without shame or weirdness or sigils carved on the walls. And I’m not sure this is something Cas would be able to give Dean.

Finally, there’s the whole bisexuality deal. Here, I have to say - I don’t know what to think. I’m sure Sam’s got no problem with queer people, but it’s always slightly different when it’s your family, right? And there are days I think Sam must know - Jesus, they’ve been sharing a room for thirty years - and days when I think that no, that parent/child thing they’ve got going is way too strong for Sam to see the whole picture (to even think about it).

(Like, I know it was supposed to be funny and that I’m reading too much into it, but Sam recoiling when Rowena suggested he undress Dean and check his chest hair or something - to me, that was emblematic of how their relationship works. Dean’s changed Sam’s diapers, has helped him to get dressed for years, surely bathed him and watched him play with that one plastic submarine they’d scavenged somewhere and, years later, he stitched him up and massaged weird herbal salves over his bruises and whatever - but to Sam, of course, it’s weird to think about his brother’s body at all, because that’s the relationship we have with our parents: when you actually have to take care of them that way, it means things have got very bad and very scary.)

In any case, at the very least Sam would be worried about Dean’s safety (and there’s always that heartbreaking thing, right, that if you’re bi and you can be happy with a woman - man, it’d be so much easier) - but one big reason to be optimistic in this sense was this new development we’ve seeing - that openly gay hunters can actually exist in the community without being bothered.

(Then again, judging from the news coming about the US, I sometimes feel Dean and Cas could have their college AU life only in a big city, and not in one of those wild, road off to the horizon states where Dean feels most at home. So, well - I really don’t know.)

Anyway - we know so little about Sam, it’s likely that anything could work concerning his approach to the Destiel situation. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Please and thank you this is the first time I’ve ever asked for anything hope I did it right 😖 Also I’m in love with all the stories here. You all are so talented and I love you all. AHHHHHHH I’m so sorry I forgot the relationship. Either the reader is a sister, or a good friend(TBH whatever you feel is right). This is in regards to the song “Believe” by Hollywood Undead. I’m sorry

Leaning on the door frame to your room, Dean had his arms crossed over his chest. You looked so peaceful, so innocent. Then there was him. This life had eaten away at any goodness that had ever been inside of him. His jaw tightened as he fought back the tears.

Dean never had a real home, Sam never had a real home, but you? You had. You’d have a loving mother, an awesome step-father, and an older sister. Then they were ripped from you. Word got around that Sam and Dean Winchester had a little sister. Half sister, really, but technicalities didn’t matter to demons, to vampires, or anything else the boys had hunted down over the years.

Here you were, two years later. You were nearing those harder years of growing up- your teenage years. Years when a home, friends, and normalcy was most important. “Dean?” Came the voice of Jody, rough with the remnants of sleep.

Castiel was patiently waiting at the war room, fidgeting with his fingers as his mind listened absentmindedly to the angel radio. She had been acting weird, and he wasn’t sure why.

True, it was hard to be the girlfriend of an angel who, until a few days before proposing her to be his girlfriend, had no idea what the word meant – less to say what it implied. She had to teach him, not only the meaning but also the correct dating etiquette, manners, details and tips, and whatever they found useful.

She had been patient, more than she had ever been, but humans had a limit and Castiel was pretty sure he had reached her limit.

Maybe he had changed too much. At first, she had fallen for the rogue angel, the badass with the blade and oblivious to anyone and anything around him. But now, after so much time on Earth living with the Winchesters, he had turned into a sentimental being – without mentioning how little grace he had left – and so there was no longer a bad-ass angel but rather a lost baby in a trench coat.

Finally she came back. Castiel got up within an instant and moved fast to face her.

“Back to the no personal space thing, huh?” She joked cheerfully.

“I missed you.” He said mechanically. It was funny how awkward things could get due to his incapacity of human-socialization. Not even after dating her for so long could he find a good line to say whenever she came back home.

“I missed you too.” She said calmly and left a quick peck over his dry lips.

“We need to talk.” Castiel was sure to have heard that line in many movies, and it seemed to have the desired effect on people. However, when (Y/N)’s face fell, he knew he had made a mistake.

“Is everything all right?” She asked, guiding him to sit back at the table in which he had so anxiously waited for her.

“Is it?” Castiel asked back, “You are distant and I know you are keeping a secret from me.”

“What kind of secret would I keep from you? You’re an angel of the Lord.” She snapped back, although her culpability was more visible after being accused.

“You know I respect your privacy and don’t sneak in your mind anymore.” Castiel spoke, “Are you happy in this relationship or do you desire to end it?”

“END IT?” She inquired angrily, “WHY ON EARTH WOULD I WANT THAT?”

“Well, considering the regular symptoms of un-satisfaction in a human romantic relationship, acknowledge in that useful book Sam gave me when we started our own relationship, you are either cheating on me or hiding a bigger secret.” Castiel explained as eloquently as possible, “Unless you have killed one of my friends, which is utterly impossible because I have only be-friended two humans, which are Sam and Dean, and they are upstairs, you are cheating on me. Now, the reason as to why a woman your age would cheat on their romantic partner is because they can no longer get satisfaction; not only sexual but emotional, and if so I would like to know if you want to finish this because I’m fully aware of how difficult it is to maintain a lover with an angel as a boyfriend.”

(Y/N) remained quiet for longer than Castiel expected. She was dumbfounded, trying to process everything Castiel said and, at the same time, wanting to find the proper words to explain her behaviour and let him know he wasn’t planning to leave him – less to say cheating.

“Cas…” She spoke carefully, “I’m not cheating on you.”

“All right, then what is going on?” He inquired softly, trying to act like the whole situation didn’t affect him.

“I think it would be better if you… Checked me.” She said.

“You want to have role-play sex right now?” He asked in surprise and (Y/N) giggled.

“No, I mean it. Check me.” The angel nodded and approached her awkwardly; using the bit of grace he had left to accomplish her wishes, as usual.

“There’s nothing wrong.” Castiel said once he had finished, sitting back at his chair in front of her. “Your soul is in place, no demonic possession, the baby is healthy – three months old – and your immune system is working as it should. Your hormones are a struggling to re-organize but that is only because of…” He froze.

“Yes?” The angel took a deep breath and connected his baby blue eyes to her (Y/E/C) ones.

“You have a baby.” He said, almost a sceptic speaking about ghosts.

“I do.” She confirmed with a shy smile.

“Who’s the father?” Castiel inquired curiously.

“It’s yours.” (Y/N) replied calmly.

“That is…” He cleared his throat, “I’m… The baby will look like Jimmy, are you agree with this?”

“Of course I am.” (Y/N) chuckled, “Cas, we’re going to be parents.”

“Me, a father at last…” A soft smile grew on his vessel’s lips. “As long as I don’t ruin it like I did with Claire…”

“You won’t, you have me by your side now, remember?” She extended her hand to hold his.

“Yes, you’re right.”

Stuck in Translation

Hi guys! So, after my meta of this last episode, I got an anonymous ask about my take on Cas’ I love you, and I since I saw that some other people like @mijrake and @tinkdw had replied to my post and were wondering about this as well, I decided to look into it to see if my hunch was right.

As a recap, the question was -

That I love you - was it for Dean? Or was it a plural?

- and my initial assumption was, yeah, definitely a plural, and not for Dean (or not in any overly romantic sense, anyway).

First, I have to say - I understand why other people’s interpretations will differ from mine, and I agree that the camera work on this show is completely Destiel-friendly, but what I also think is that camera work is not what defines what’s going for most people - actions and words is how the audience understands a story, because that’s the instinctive, ‘natural’ way to make sense of real life as well. The vast majority of viewers (and I’m including myself here, because I only know the very basics of how movies are made) won’t know anything about silent storytelling, subtext, camera angles, framed ships on the walls and beer labels. Plus, they’re watching this show like they’re watching dozens of other shows - simply because it’s fun, or because it’s on, or because yeah, I’ve missed a couple of seasons but holy shit, this looks good so let’s give it another chance. They’re not going to read meta online and watch gifs in slow-motion until they can’t function and turn and toss in their beds wondering what Cas really meant, which is why subtextual-only building of gay relationships is dishonest and queerbaiting if it doesn’t follow through. This is, after all, the main reason why most people aren’t even aware that Destiel is a thing - because most of it is still in the subtext.

And coming to the language thing - I’m an interpreter and a translator, so I face this kind of situations every day. In interpreting, everything is generally way too fast to make informed decisions and educated guesses, so you simply do your best, but when translating I often agonize over what to say, especially when working on UK texts, because I know how understated people there can be, so I’ve normally got this text saying one thing but I know, I’m sure of it, that it actually means something else, and what the hell do I do with this now and just kill me

In this case - I’m sorry guys - from what I’ve seen most people don’t agree with me, but I’m not changing my mind. I would never translate Cas’ I love you as a singular. Never ever. It would be dishonest of me, and definitely an overinterpretation. A casual viewer wouldn’t even notice the camera pan to Dean, or would assume it’s normal in a platonic way - Dean’s the one Cas has the profound bond with, after all - he saved Dean from Hell, rebelled against Heaven because Dean asked him to, and is generally learning how to think and feel for himself from Dean. Most of the time when Cas is speaking we get a reaction shot from Dean, not Sam, but reaction shots in themselves are not enough to assume two characters are in love with each other and want to bang right, left and centre. And, well, I’m not a fansubber, but I like follow the work of the Italian fansubbing community and 99% of the time they do an outstanding job, so I’ve gone tinkering around on their websites and this is what they did -

Conoscervi…è stata la cosa più bella, per me. E tutte le cose…che abbiamo condiviso…mi hanno cambiato. Siete la mia famiglia. Vi voglio bene. A tutti voi.

- and, to me, it makes perfect sense. The verb to love in Italian - amare - is profoundly connected with romantic or sexual love, and it’d be beyond weird to use it with a family member. Voler bene is the expression we use for that, and is how Cas’ I love you - I love all of you is translated as.

Compare and contrast with Metatron’s taunts - He’s in love with…humanity - which was translated as È innamorato…dell’umanità: that was the right choice, because ‘in love’ is the unambiguous expression for romantic love, just like innamorarsi di qualcuno in Italian. In fact, all the most famous instances of I love you directed to family members were inevitably translated with voler bene.

Va tutto bene. Perche’ sei mio fratello. E ti voglio bene comunque. [5x11, Sam]

Lucifero…Tu sei mio fratello e ti voglio bene. [5x12, Gabriel]

In Italian, amare can be used with family members and friends but not as a direct ti amo - only in a kind of I love my friends way. This is recognized by the fansubbers, who do use the word when the context is more general:

Deludo le persone che amo. Ho deluso papa’ e adesso credo di aver deluso anche te. [2x22, Dean]

E quando cederai alla fine, e credimi, cederai, Sam…e tutti quelli che conosci e ami…potrebbero essere morti da tempo. Tutti eccetto me. [10x22, Cas]

Translating Cas’ I love you as Ti amo would have been incorrect, out of context and dishonest, especially since Cas just said all three Winchesters are like family to him.

So, look - what annoys me about stuff like that is that what we’re doing right now is the inevitable result. The whole point of inserting ambiguous scenes is to keep everybody happy and get people talking about what happened so we won’t lose interest in the show. Some people right now are elated because my God, Cas told Dean he loved him, while other people feel tricked and let down by the fact the scene wasn’t clear enough, and the thing is - there is no right or wrong answer because that’s how the scene was written in the first place - ambiguously. The words mean one thing, but the way they’re framed into the conversation means another. They could be directed at Dean, but Cas looks away from him, but we still get Dean’s reaction shot. And so on, and so forth. One could easily write a novel about how this scene was written, played and shot, and I’ve got no doubt we will do that, just as we wrote novels about all those other moments who meant everything and nothing, all at once.

Just for fun: here’s the work of the other fansubbers in romance languages.

[PLURAL]

Spanish: Conoceros…ha sido lo mejor de mi vida. Y las cosas…Las cosas  que hemos compartido juntos, me han cambiado. Sois mi familia. Os quiero. Os quiero a todos. [PLURAL]

So, please - there were a lot of significant things going on in this episode, and as a determined and obsessive and combative Cas girl, I was blown away by Cas acknowledging and accepting his place at the Winchesters’ side and formulating those human feelings that have been flickering on and off in his chest from the start, but personally, I’m also not going to kid myself here. This did not make Destiel canon: like many other choices they’ve made other the years, it made Destiel easier, believable, within reach and a natural conclusion to this story they’re telling - but for the moment, that relationship is still subtextual and it’s up to them to bloody get it out of the subtext, not up to us to drag it out - and that’s simply how the rules work.

Smut (without weird kinks)

Hahaha, hello there! Are you traumatized by our weird smut fics? Me too, buddy, me too. Seriously, Dean fucking his catboy Cas never leaves my mind. Anyway, this one is quite simple question since smut fics are veeeery common. I can’t be the only one who finds normal books weird nowadays. Seriously, a story without smut is like… Well, kid’s book. Everyone should read a few smut fics and they wouldn’t think that 50 Shades is something special. It’s not. It’ shitty. - Admin J

P.S. If you have no idea what we’re talking about, check the WTF did I just read tag in HERE.

P.P.S. If weird kinks are not allowed, let me share a gif that has nothing to do with anything.

You know, reading fics has made me a bit insane person. I mean, my friends tell me that their boyfriends want to do this and that and I’m like “ah, well that’s nothing. “So, you guys kiss and make up then?” Dean asked with a silly grin.

You cocked your eyebrow at him. “Nah man, Feathers and I aren’t really the kiss and make up types. We’re more the hate-fuck and make up types.”

A/N: It’s my wifey’s birthday today and to celebrate, she wanted some fluffy Sam love…..so, Happy Birthday @jared-padaloveme - I hope you like this.

—————————————————————————————————-

Present day…..

“Not much longer, Y/N.  You’re doing great.  Just a few more minutes and he’ll be here.”

The sound of Sam’s voice was doing little to calm you down; after all, it wasn’t like he was having to do anything other than hold your hand, occasionally wipe your brow and offer some comforting words.  You’d been in the makeshift delivery room for hours now and you were exhausted….yet another downside of not just being able to pop along to a hospital when you needed medical care – no pain relief, no doctors….nothing except Sam, a hunter friend who had experience in delivering babies and an angel on standby just in case.

Trying to focus on something other than the pain that was currently working its way through your body, you thought back to all of the moments that had led to your present condition.

Three years earlier….

You had been looking for the answers for weeks now and all of your searching had finally led to you to a tiny bookshop in a small town in the middle of Kansas.  The trail of the demon you were hunting was starting to go cold and unless you managed to find the book you were looking for within the next few hours, you would have to start all over again.  Pulling your car into one of the handful of tiny spaces outside the store, you made your way inside and after stopping briefly at the cashier’s desk, you headed straight towards the mythology section.

The Romance Arc (Destiel)

So, I know we always say it, but the other day I was finally fed up enough - or weird enough - to decide I’d make a list. And, guys, this is going to be a long-ass post, so if you haven’t got time, here is the tl;dr version: if we look at the love tropes most commonly used to build an onscreen relationship, Dean and Cas score an eye-watering 61/91 - that’s a 67% total.

Now, to put that in perspective - in order to build a romance arc, you’ve got five obligatory stages (meeting each other, falling in love, becoming a couple, a period of conflict, a resolution) and each of these stages will include at least one common trope, more or less hidden according to the kind of media and the author’s intent and sophistication. tvtropes lists a total of 91 tropes, but no love story will ever use them all. That would be ridiculous - either a parody or complete insanity. Think of a story where our lovers were destined to be together and also promised to each other as children and also the reincarnation of past lovers; where they meet by spilling coffee on each other and then she goes on to lose her handkerchief and he picks it up and runs after her to give it back but - whoa - now she’s been attacked by pirates and the hero wants to save her but his king is ordering him not to and oh no, what will he do? That sounds like overkill, right? And it totally is: a story with too many tropes is a ridiculous, unrealistic, unwatchable mess. To give you a better idea of what I mean, if look at those 91 tropes tvtropes lists as possible steps to build a romance arc, Dirty Dancing, one of the most romantic movies ever made, only scores 19 points; 10 Things I Hate about You, another big favourite of mine and an absolute ALL the love, ALL the feels story, scores 16 points. And Jane the Virgin, an actual soap-opera parody on the CW complete with sudden rain and snow to highlight special kisses, scores even lower: 13 points.

Meanwhile, normal friendships between men like Sam and Frodo’s in the Lord of the Rings trilogy or Ted and Marshall’s in How I Met Your Mother score a grand total of zero points - so, yes, it’s perfectly possible to write a non-romantic male friendship even when that friendship is a dramatic I’ll walk with you to the very edge of the Earth and then carry you up the slopes of a dangerous volcano and finally die with you sort of thing. Because, funnily enough, you can be friends with somebody and be ready to die for them without actually having a sexual interest in them.

(Johnlock scores 29 points.)

(Wincest, 4.)

Something you could be wondering at this point is, why tropes though? Why are tropes a thing, and why does it matter how many tropes Supernatural chooses to use between Dean and Cas? And, look, I’m sure someone else could say it better, but essentially tropes are the bones of a story. Every single story you see out there, from the Odyssey to Torchwood/Gossip Girl crossovers to coffeshop AUs is built out of the same building blocks. There are, like, seven possible plots and about two dozen kinds of characters and maybe two hundred common tropes - and that’s it. Try tagging any classic novel with AO3 tags and you’ll see what I mean.

[This story is Jules Verne’s fanfiction of an Edgar Allan Poe novel, and, yeah.]

Now, since it’s only possible to build a story in a limited number of ways, the problem all authors face is to find an original way to make it work. Some will use tropes religiously, either because they can’t think of anything different or because they hope a tried-and-tested formula will appeal to readers (see every romance novel under the sun; also most thrillers). Others will make fun of tradition by throwing the tropes back in your face (one of my favourite takes of this is Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle). And others will manage to bullshit you so thoroughly and completely you won’t notice the tropes are there until it’s too late - those are the stories where you’re truly surprised and shocked by events and you sit up in bed like a fool gasping out loud and you only stop reading because you need to tell someone asap, You won’t believe what just happened. A good example of this is the ending of the first season of Game of Thrones - we were all so convinced Ned Stark was the hero, filming people who hadn’t read the books as they watched him die became something of a hobby; and many became convinced George RR Martin was this all-powerful deity without any rules (not true: he’s a good writer, however, and he managed to convince most of us Ned was the hero when in reality he was the ‘Dumbledore’ figure - and therefore his death makes perfect sense).

And if we’re talking about Destiel - as I explained in the very first meta I wrote for this fandom (though at the time I hadn’t even realized I was part of a fandom, and didn’t know what a meta even was), I didn’t start to ‘ship’ Dean and Cas out of nefarious reasons, or tedium, or a desire to write smutty fanfiction. In fact, I still don’t consider myself a shipper in any way. I am not particularly interested in romance, and I never go out of my way to see who may be suited for whom. And I’m not saying there’s anything wrong in doing that - just that it’s something I don’t do. If I started to see Destiel and to write about it, it’s because to me (and, apparently, to a lot of other people), it was clear that there was something there; that that was how the story was built. And if I started to look at it more closely, it was simply because my expectations as a viewer were disappointed, and the relationship of trust between author and reader was - for me - crumbling into nothingness.

And, look, I won’t lie: I was angry and upset by the implications - that there was something wrong with me - that I was trying to force a sexual relationship on two friends just because. That, as a woman, I couldn’t enjoy a story without making it all about the romance. No, I am a huge book nerd, and I like writing stories, and I mostly analyse stuff for a living and I also sort of have eyes? - so, to me, it was clear I was being lied to, and at that moment, I was left in an uncomfortably ambiguous position which will sound familiar to many of you - I was furious at the show, but at the same time I was still in love with the characters (so very much in love). This was a frustrating feeling which presented me with two equally unappealing options - to keep watching and not expect anything, or to walk away. In the end, I tried a third way, which I suspect many of you have chosen as well: I was too invested in these characters to abandon them, but I also wanted this story to be an honest story, so I started complementing it with ‘viewing supports’. I started to read (and write) fanfiction. I looked for fanvideos, fanart and gifs. And, most of all, I fell into the habit of reading (and writing) metas after every episode to make sure what I was seeing was actually there. Because, well, for me - that’s why I write metas about Supernatural when I don’t write metas of other shows I enjoy much more: because most of the time Supernatural is more focused on not telling a story than it is in telling one, which means what we are left with what is a half story where our characters have their own secret life offscreen and many lines of dialogue could mean anything. Ironically enough, Supernatural has become like its hero and POV character, Dean Winchester: a con and a liar and a charmer who tries to be liked by everyone.

(And let’s not forget the swings both ways thing).

As for the other question - are we crazy? - I’m hoping this post will help clearing things up: no, we are not crazy. The reason we see a romance unfolding is because the relationship between Dean and Cas is written to fit a romance arc - and does fit a romance arc by 67%.

A Child’s Confession

Characters- Charlie x Reader, Dean, Sam, Cas

Words- 2177

Request by Anonymous- Can you write a Charlie x Reader where the reader is bisexual but she hasn’t come out to Sam Dean or Cas yet because she is afraid they might throw her out(like her family did to her). She has a major crush on Charlie but she doesn’t know that she’s gay. Can you add that she’s on a hunt and a witch curses her, she heads back to the Bunker and the next morning she wakes up and she’s a kid(like 5), and since kids don’t have filters she comes out to the four of them and she is sad, lots of fluff?

Warnings- Coming out? That’s not a warning. Uh no warnings, witches curse? Fluffy? I’ve got none. Got one! Sad talk about the past, yeah that’s it.

A/n- This was super fun to write! Hope you guys enjoy!

You guys didn’t keep secrets, you were honest with them as they were with you. Charlie was your best friend, so that was a given. There was one thing you couldn’t tell. You were afraid to come out to them that you liked both guys and girls. Mostly because your parents through you out of the house when you came out to them. Cas was an angel, so he is all about the Bible, right?

Your other problem was that you had a major crush on your best friend, Charlie. You didn’t mean for it to happen, it just did. You had lost your best friend from 4th grade to the fact that you were bi and she thought you would hit on her. So she left your life as well. Let’s say you hadn’t had a great experience with coming out. You refused to lose the people who were now your family. You had to admit you were ashamed of your sexuality, but you had enough in you to cover it. But you just wanted to be happy. You told yourself that being in the hunting life made that impossible but it didn’t seem to matter.

A/N: 1)The nickname in this fic may come across as odd for Castiel, but will be explained in another story. 2) I was in a sad place after watching First Blood and needed Castiel to feel happy again; at least in the form of fan fiction. 3)This is my second attempt at writing smut. Constructive criticism is always appreciated.
