and all its great characters

The single best piece of writing advice I ever got was from a professor teaching a playwriting class, who told us that in every scene, especially scenes that were just dialogue, every character should want something. Making every character in a scene have a goal is an easy way to avoid dialogue that’s just exposition, and to make sure your dialogue drives the plot forward and/or reveals characterization.

It doesn’t have to be complicated or super weighty–as long as the characters have a goal, there will be tension in the scene even if the goals are small. Character X wants to borrow a pen, and character Y wants to make a good impression on character X. X wants to insult Y until they go away, and Y wants to annoy X by pretending not to notice the insults. X wants Y to give them the last slice of pizza, and Y is super full but still doesn’t want X to have it. No matter what your character’s goal is, it will reveal something about who that character is to the reader, and the conflict between your characters’ goals will give the scene momentum.

Lars of the Stars

Oh my god, in last night’s Bob’s Burgers, Bob takes Gene to a laser light rock show at the planetarium (super important to Bob, because it was his favorite when he was a teenager, and this is the last night before they’re closing the exhibit because it’s old and no one goes anymore, also it’s Bob’s birthday), and Gene has no idea what he’s in for, but he gets pumped for it anyway ‘cause Bob’s so excited about it, and finally they get in there and they’re watching it, and Gene has a sensory overload and kinda starts freaking out ‘cause he can’t handle it, so Bob takes him out and they sit in the car for a bit.  Gene’s angry because Bob didn’t tell him it would be so loud and scary, so Bob offers to play the album for Gene at a normal volume, and Gene starts to enjoy it, so he reclines the seats, takes out the cigarette lighter, tells Gene to pretend it’s a laser, and starts drawing in the air, explaining the plot to him (it’s like a full on Pink Floyd or Rush-esque rock opera about a bunch of robot overlords telling rockers that they can’t play music anymore, and one Rebel rising against them).  Gene gets really into it and decides he wants to see the finale of the laser show (which Bob regards as a life-changing experience), so they sneak back into the planetarium (there’s no re-entry allowed) with a few tricks that parallel the story from the album, and watch the climax of the show together (Bob fashions some earplugs for Gene out of a napkin).  On the way home, Bob’s asking Gene how he liked it, and Gene says “I loved it!”, Bob asks him to speak louder ‘cause his ear’s are shot, and Gene yells, “I LOVED IT, DAD”.  Bob yells back “I love you too, Gene”.

I FUCKING!!! CAN’T!!! DEAL!!!! WITH HOW GOOD THIS SHOW IS!!! I know i don’t talk about Bob’s Burgers a lot but this show is flawless and charming and gross and funny all at the same time, the characters are written like people with actual fears and anxieties, and unlike a lot of comparable shows, the comedy doesn’t come from the family being pitted against each other, it’s always the family against the world… I love it, I love it, it’s so pure and refreshing and still somehow manages to be funny without sacrificing it’s heart, and I fuckin’ love it, please watch Bob’s Burgers holy CRAP okay I’m done.

Interviewer: How did we get to [the alternate reality] version of Altea. Because with Allura having been the Empress who sort of established all of this, did it start to go that way when she was in charge? …

Joaquim: I would say it did. Definitely. I think her father was struck down and she went on a, like, revenge-laden swath across the universe.

Lauren: I think the way we looked at it was, what if they had done Allura’s suggestion, which is stay and fight, versus Alfor’s suggestion of send the lions away. And if they had, if anything had happened–If Allura had gotten the power to take down these Galra, then she would have just, I think, maintained doing that. Been like, this is what we need to do.

Joaquim: She would have given into it, yea. She didn’t have the perspective that Alfor had.

…so what you’re telling me is that not only is Alternate Reality allura just as bad as zarkon uwu but that our reality allura is also just as bad as zarkon, she just didn’t get a chance to take over the universe because her father made her physically incapable of doing so

yeah okay, cool! gotcha! you just really, really, really hate allura

Hey y’all!

I’m sure you’ve seen me posting about it but the super cool @lesbianderolo and @trickfoot are putting together a critter animation project à la those done for TAZ, Game Grumps, and other shows. Unfortunately, they’re really hurting for both voice talent and artists, so if you’ve got a bit of time or interest, please don’t hesitate to check out the @nat20animation project! The script is wonderful, the people working on it are talented and lovely, and it’s a project designed for the community to get behind and participate in––our very own brand of communal storytelling.

If you’ve got questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

not to be that person but…. hating a movie before it comes out because you THINK your favorite character might be getting a storyline you didn’t “want” is really immature and creates uncessary drama over nothing. if it happens AFTER you see the movie? make a fucking scene! but before? just….chiLL

Horror Favorites Meme: [4/8] Heroes - Alice Johnson, the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise

How do you know so much about dreams?

Well, when it’s all you have, you kinda become an expert.

Edd is a pretty fly ace guy, and I’m honestly so glad he exists, because I relate to him on a personal level.

Probably my favorite Edd scene was him just raising his hand and yelling “I don’t like anyone” when Rolly asked if anyone else was going to come out, because I’ve literally done that myself when coming out to people as asexual. I love him.

I’m determined to get to all the characters before Pride Month ends!

🌈 Happy Pride, y’all! 🌈
