ancient lands

My Trip to Ireland

I really wanted to be able to say it was magical, I really did. But sadly, it was like going to Irish Disneyland. The bus tour that Mr. Downing’s family selected was … problematic. It was tourist trap after tourist trap. I saw much and experienced nothing. I know his family didn’t mean to, and I think many of them were quite happy, so I’m trying to be pleased for them. However, I am a historian by training and being in this ancient land but unable to spend any time at historic sights was … well … devastating. We were rushed to the next shopping stop with 15 minute photo breaks at 12th c castles and 7th c monasteries.

If I could sum it up with two photos, it would be these:

There wasn’t time to tour it, you see … we had to get to the next Irish Experience TM.

But now we’re on our own, and I’m so very happy. I adore Cardiff and Wales, so much so that we extended our stay by two nights. Then I’m off to London with nary an in-law in sight.

IMPORTANT QUESTION. Vampires aren't suppose to enter a premise without being invited right? What if a hermit vampire was living in his falling apart old castle and some fuck bought it as a "fixer upper", would the vampire just glitch out on to the lawn or would he be okay since he lived there before?

Okay so this would depend on where you are in the world, and whether or not they had squatters rights (can’t be evicted and can apply for legal ownership of place once they have been there for X amount of years) but I mean, the dude owns the place, even if it is a run down mess he was still there first and there’s probably some ancient land ownership law which can’t be overwritten by modern laws (you find all sorts of weird things are still technically legal cause no one bothered to update the books since 1645) so basically whoever just bought this castle to turn it into a modern fixer upper, congrats, you also just bought yourself a vampire and he’s not going anywhere.

(Also now I kind of want to write this where a family buys it to turn it into a hotel/wedding venue and the kids find the vampire in the attic and he ends up being the weird uncle who gets roped into hilarious wedding related shenanigans?? Like

“Okay yes fine, you can host weddings here, but registrar only, no religious ones.”
“But Theolodious, why?”
“Really Sharon, really, do I have to spell it out for you. Really.”

*

“We really should increase the lighting for photographs, what about skylights?”
“No.”
“But—”
“How about I just set all of you on fire while you’re trying to sleep.”

*

“Please, for the love of god, please don’t let people throw confetti or rice, I’m begging you.”

*

“Okay what’s our final head count for the night?”
“107.”
“Are you sure?”
“Did I fucking stutter Steve?”

*

“Uncle Theo, why does the groom have “help me” on the bottom of his shoes, why is everyone laughing?.”
“Because small one, humanity has failed collectively as a species and heteronormativity is a constructed lie designed to oppress over half the population for not conforming to arcane and chauvinistic ideals put in place by dead scholars who have long since turned to dust and have no place influencing modern society.”
“…”
“Permanence is an illusion.”

*

“Madame, flattering as your offer is for a quickie, you’re not my type.”
“What is your type then?” ;) ;) ;)
“O negative.”

*

“Whoo, what a day, I could eat a horse.”
“Same.”
“…”
“…well obviously I’m not going to.”

*

“Theo…are you…are you crying?”
“Yes.”
“You big softie, I never thought someone like you would cry at a wedding.”
“…I’ve lived a long life, Sharron. People come and go, the christening you bless will be the funeral you mourn in less than a century. But people keep saying “I love you”, that has to count for something.”

In the far off future, humanity sends their most dangerous criminals through wormholes to random points in time and space as a humane way of execution, because there is a very small chance they may survive and get a second chance. One has, against all odds, landed in ancient Israel in 2,000 BC.

Through the cosmic kaleidoscope snapshot

Aries:

Something in her nature is always preparing her for war. It could be with lovers, employers, teachers, or parents. It could be with herself and if she is staging to the world the woman she admires in herself. Her heels thunder through the hallways and she can raise her voice higher than the ceiling. When it comes to self expectation, her standards are quite high. She is not afraid of assertion, protecting her femininity, or defending herself against any force or feature. Every piece of herself that she has built has taken work. Libra may be the White Queen, and indelible charmer seemingly loved by the world. But the Red Queen in Aries is life and aliveness, choking at the excitement of everything, vivid, glorious, spirited, and… bonkers.

Taurus:

Taurus have a talent for beautifying everything they put their hands on, so you can almost imagine their paintbrushes stroking everything in tactile delight and leaving colours behind that nobody has seen before. Even her physical body is a canvas, she can be experimental with personal style, use meditation to create harmonics in her body, create gourmet cuisine and help flowers grow. It is her godly artistry, the substance of her inner world that gives rise to mosaics and masterpieces, the paintbrush hands that spindle thread into gold.

Gemini:

Gemini is rarely hesitant to hide her lack of fasciation or interest with certain people. She has a sophisticated social conduct but this deteriorates when she finds her company bland and tedious. She can abandon long term relationships and friendships without hesitation because she embraces the change of fresh perspectives. Her intellect cannot hide its need to ravage even greater thinkers, and it’s unapologetic in doing so. It’s always about ensuring the mind does not lapse into a mere moment of boredom, because this would mean that the Gemini is left with nothing but billions of thoughts, and they blow up like anxious butterflies.

Cancer:

The Mother Goddess in Cancer is a formidable figure of biological and spiritual activity, the waters that birth and cradle all life. But there is different sort of light or essence in Cancer, one that the inner child refuses to let go of. It is her intimacy with this internal child, the scarab, that gives her the anointed and sacred mother’s touch. The scarab was anciently regarded as a ‘very tiny cosmos’ as it symbolised entrance into the material universe. This ‘tiny cosmos’ is still active inside Cancer. It’s why she can believe that mermaids exist and immerse herself in make believe. It’s why she can enjoy simple pleasures like colouring in and eating cookie dough. Mother and Child divided and reunited by light itself.

Leo:

The Leo can be so whipped by the crack of the ego that it can be absolutely impossible to accept criticism or failure. The Leo seeks out validation, because love and affection from other people act as a source of nourishment. She needs credit for playing her role with prestige, sometimes openly, and sometimes secretly. These words of acclaim liven her heart and energise her spirit. But this can be fleeting, and only for only a moment. The ego is always flocking close by, waiting to whisper its discouragement or dissatisfaction, hovering with poisonous thoughts that are sure to contaminate any sort of praise she received.

Virgo:

Nothing she ever accomplishes seems good enough for her mind, it slices through her like cutting criticism. The memory of every mistake that she’s ever made inundates her head and sounds like demons cackling. And this pursuit of perfection is ultimately altruistic, she only wants to be perfect so she can be perfect for others, so she can be recognised and praised, so she can hear something other than criticism. This relentless conditioning by her own mind causes her sensitive physical body to respond, she can become trapped in rituals and routine for which she sees no sense, it’s just like a compulsive ceremony to manage the onslaught.

Libra:

Libra is the ruler of the 7th house and the descendant as the sun sets. These shadows begin to dilute the personality, it requires all-consuming social needs and trepidation when faced with isolation. Libra is ultimately energised socially and activated in the pursuit of forming relationships, maintaining contracts, and upholding law. The Libra temperament can be quite unpredictable. They can experience sudden and confusing ruptures of energy that their airy mind is unable to interpret. This is when you see the shaky and tantrum energies of Libra rise from dissatisfied cardinal forces

Scorpio:

Deep down in the halls where Hades rules there is a throne glistening in sea and soul, the throne for the Princess who valiantly guards the threshold with ferocious winds and demons coursing through her hair. The blood of her fought battles tattooed into her skin, her eyes ablaze with the power and prestige of ruling the underworld. That’s no easy task for someone who thought she was a mere girl, the duty of taking souls on journeys and extracting lies and traumas like a psychic surgeon. She oozes magnetism and prowess, her presence is as noticeable as her absence, and in some way she is always watching, observing, and calculating.

Sagittarius:

She safaris in tourist sites and ancient burial lands, the more I understand about the world she figures, the more I will understand about myself. She spots marks on atlases and sees her own heritage. She hears a language never spoken before but understands everything. She sees her own reflection in the Great Barrier Reef. She feels her heart rise with the sun. She adopts new cultures like her own. Change can be the Sagittarian’s only constant, and as the world spins she madly tries to keep up with it. She can be ravenous when her mind is hungry. She just wants to find her true self so it’s not so empty.

Capricorn:

It was also Capricorn who is illustrated by the cloaked grim reaper, their melancholy is not romantic, but it carves out a wound in them that summons magnificent healing energy, an intimacy with pain and suffering that is pure wisdom at its core. For this, she has a unique rapport with death, and she hears the reminders of immortality louder than anyone. It’s this mutual understanding that she has established with death that generates her sorcerer’s knowledge, herbs, tonics, and angelic curatives, but also rituals. And this can be why the Capricorn repeatedly or compulsively carries out personal rituals, there is a calling in her being for return to the wind, trees, salt, and sun and once again become the crone.

Aquarius:

Aquarius is the sign of Blue Light Christ Consciousness, they are residents of the mental plane, the realisation of the inner light and kingdom, the awareness of truth and oneness with all beings. The jagged waves of their symbol represent light, not water, and electrical impulses that pass through one another other like telepathy. Aquarius contains this knowing in her jug of water, but she maintains physical form. Like a mermaid, she dwells in mysterious waters, but in true to her airy nature, her head remains in the clouds.

Pisces:

She wrote a severe contract for earth before incarnating as Pisces. And God knows this, so her support system is rich and active. It’s ensured there are angels, guides, ancestors, and spiritual mentors always on call, this is why so many Pisces make natural spiritualists, healers, witches, and clairvoyants. The 6th sense is how she perceives, feels, knows, and understands the world. The ocean is vast and largely undiscovered, in a spiritual sense it symbolises everything. This is the experience for Pisces. The intensity of containing such spiritual mass is too harsh for a physical body. So the Pisces has many bodies she can swim into.

The Epic Of Gilgamesh In Sumerian

The EPIC OF GILGAMESH is the earliest great work of literature that we know of, and was first written down by the Sumerians around 2100 B.C.

Ancient Sumer was the land that lay between the two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, in Mesopotamia. The language that the Sumerians spoke was unrelated to the Semitic languages of their neighbors the Akkadians and Babylonians, and it was written in a syllabary (a kind of alphabet) called “cuneiform”. By 2000 B.C., the language of Sumer had almost completely died out and was used only by scholars (like Latin is today). No one knows how it was pronounced because it has not been heard in 4000 years.

What you hear in this video are a few of the opening lines of part of the epic poem, accompanied only by a long-neck, three-string, Sumerian lute known as a “ngish-gu-di”. The instrument is tuned to G - G - D, and although it is similar to other long neck lutes still in use today (the tar, the setar, the saz, etc.) the modern instruments are low tension and strung with fine steel wire. The ancient long neck lutes (such as the Egyptian “nefer”) were strung with gut and behaved slightly differently. The short-neck lute known as the “oud” is strung with gut/nylon, and its sound has much in common with the ancient long-neck lute although the oud is not a fretted instrument and its strings are much shorter (about 25 inches or 63 cm) as compared to 32 inches (82 cm) on a long-neck instrument.

For anyone interested in these lutes, I highly recommend THE ARCHAEOMUSICOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST by Professor Richard Dumbrill.

The location for this performance is the courtyard of Nebuchadnezzar’s palace in Babylon. The piece is four minutes long and is intended only as a taste of what the music of ancient Sumer might have sounded like.

Sagittarius - No Fixed Address

She has no fixed address just as she seems to have no fixed personality. And she searches in strange cities and foreign places for traces of herself or answers about who she could be. Her permanent address is no address found, she can never settle in as is, it suddenly becomes too cold or too dark or the flowers don’t seem so bright anymore. So she keeps on the move so she never truly has to confront the hollow echoes in her own self, the child inside that just wants a home. There are answers calling from distant lands, and she always wonders if the next backdrop will tell her who she is, or what she is, or what this is. Sagittarius is a wild wanderer and freedom fighter, she fears being bound or held captive, she needs to move so the machinery in her mind stays unkinked and remains in constant motion. As she devours books in libraries and competes with 3am at study halls, she turns the pages searching for an answer, she boards flights to places other people would fear, but she wonders if truth is waiting for her. Change can be the Sagittarian’s only constant, and as the world spins she madly tries to keep up with it. tbh the series would have gone such differently if accents/speech patterns were mentioned

like:

  • Percy arrives at Camp Jupiter. People immediately recognize he has a Long Island accent and get suspicious about how the hell he got all the way across the country obviously without transportation
  • Hazel, Nico, and Bianca using 30s/40s slang and quickly realizing they’re in a different century because what’s a “yolo?” hella? [insert any modern slang here]
  • Jason with a Californian accent and everyone at CHB going “wait we aren’t allowed in California how are you here?”
  • Nico and Bianca with Italian accents, thus causing earlier mention of the whole “demigods not allowed in the ‘‘‘‘‘Ancient Lands’‘‘‘‘ aka Italy and surrounding area”
🌳 What are THRESHOLDS? 🌳

Thresholds are border areas where one force, power, or element encounters another. These meeting areas are potentially the most highly magically charged of all. Thresholds exist everywhere: the seashore, that transitional area where ocean meets land; the foot of mountains, where land begins to rise; and caves, the subterranean thresholds between Earth’s outer and inner powers. There are architectural thresholds: doors and windows. There are thresholds in time: twilight and dawn, where an incoming power approaches before the out-going power has completely dispersed. Life cycles are thresholds: the birth of a new baby, particularly a first child whose birth transforms someone into a parent. Death is a threshold between one existence and the next. Someone who lingers in a halflife is described as having a foot in both worlds, straddling the threshold. Any transformative ritual is defined as a threshold, by virtue of its very capacity to transform. There are thresholds on the body: the mouth is the threshold between thought and speech. Thresholds are simultaneously the areas of greatest magical potential and also of extreme vulnerability. A vast percentage of protective amulets, rituals, and spells are designed to guard thresholds and the transformative process. In fact, every magic spell can be perceived as a transformative threshold, from a past that has left something to be desired toward the future that the spell hopefully produces. Most thresholds consist of a simple boundary: with one foot you stand inside the house, with another you stand outside. If your feet are small enough and your balance is good, you can stand poised, neither inside, nor outside. With one foot you stand in the river or ocean, with the other, you stand on the land. The ancient Egyptians called their country “the land of the red and the black,” because there was a distinct division, a visible dividing line between the black fertile land of Nile silt and the stark red land of the desert. You could literally stand with one foot in each color. Each color also typified a different kind of magic and a different spiritual ruler. The black belonged to Osiris, with his arts of orderly civilization; red belonged to his brother Seth, anarchic, chaotic Lord of Magic. These are simple boundaries: you can hop from one to the other. There are also expanded, exponentially super-magically charged thresholds.

Tumblr, Hawai’i needs your support now more than ever.

Mauna Kea, one of our most sacred mountains, is under attack. Since the 70′s, telescopes have been built on its summit, destroying the ecosystem and sacred sites. Right now, there are 13 telescopes, and now, certain people want to build another one. Except this one will be 30 meters (98+ ft.) tall, and costing over $1.4 billion. Because of the mountain’s unstable surface, construction workers for the other telescopes have had to basically blow up certain areas and smooth it out to make it more stable. Mauna Kea is already over 40 feet (12 m) lower than before construction.

Even though many people were arrested after a series of peaceful protests, we are still fighting. Mauna Kea is sacred to our people, and it is not theirs to build on. This land is ancient and sacred, and it does not belong to the United States, or the State of Hawai’i.

So please, help and support our efforts to put an end to the construction by signing this petition - https://www.change.org/p/governor-david-y-ige-stop-tmt-construction-and-arrests-of-mauna-kea-protectors

Fair of face, joyous with the double plume, mistress of happiness, endowed with favour, at hearing whose voice one rejoices, lady of grace, great of love, whose disposition cheers the lord of the two lands.
—  Akhenaten’s own words written upon his boundary stela, referring to his beloved wife Nefertiti.
Ancient Egyptian translated into modern English.
  • Reyna: I should warn you! No one has ever returned from the ancient lands alive. If you value your lives, you would do well to reconsider.
  • Percy: We appreciate that, but that is critter talk.
