an impulse a day

iamkamallama  asked:

I'm in my third trimester (of an unplanned and highly unwanted) pregnancy and dealing with a lot of suicidal impulses and ideation. I've spent the past few days trying to find an inpatient facility that'll accept me and none will without my OBs permission. I just moved to this state a few weeks ago so I have no OB. The insurance I'm getting is bottom level and usually only really dingy psych wards will take it. I'm so scared. I don't know what to do. I need help and nobody is taking me seriously

I strongly suggest reaching out to two types of organizations. The first is anyone that offers aid, resources, or information for young mothers. The second is postpartum depression organizations. If you plan on going through adoption routes, reach out to the agency or agencies you’re looking to work with. Anyone and everyone who could help you get aid.

What is autism?

Autism is a natural variation of human neurology which is categorized as a developmental disability. About 1% of the worlds population is autistic. Autism is a lifelong condition meaning that autistic people are born autistic and that they will die autistic. You cannot “catch autism” or “become autistic” like you can risk becoming mentally or physically ill - neither vaccines or heavy metals or gluten will make you autistic if you aren’t born with it. You also can’t cure autism or recover from it - but all autistic people can live fulfilling, happy lives with the right accommodations so an autism diagnosis isn’t the death sentence that many people make it out to be. Autism isn’t a diagnosis which can be clearly separated from who you are and how you see the world - it affects every aspect about of how you think about, experience and interact with the world around you. There are many different aspects of being autistic which makes it hard to summarize the condition, but I’ll do my best to introduce you to some of the common autistic traits and experiences in this post.

  • Sensory processing. Autistic people’s sensory processing is different from most people’s sensory processing. This means that autistic people may be over- or undersensitive to different sensory input. This means that we may have trouble with sounds, touches, smells, tastes, etc that most people can easily tolerate or block out or that we may seek out loud music, blinking lights, bright colors, spicy food, strong smells and activities which provide physical activity and deep pressure. Many autistic people lack the filter that most people have which makes them able to block out background sounds, meaning that the ticking of a clock, the buzzing from a lamp or two people having a conversation nearby might make us unable to focus on what we’re supposed to be focusing on. This means that many autistic people will have trouble focusing in situations with lots of sensory input, for example situations where many people are gathered together, and that we are more easily overwhelmed and stressed out by different sensory input than allistic (non-autistc) people.
  • Stimming. Stimming is short for self-stimulatory behavior, meaning a behavior which is meant to stimulate one of your senses. Some common stims are rocking back and forth, bouncing your legs or feet, hand flapping, hand wringing and repeating words and sentences, but a stim can be any kind of repeated movement or action which stimulates one of your senses. Stimming can thus be many different things - you can stim by smelling, touching, watching, moving, tasting and listening. The reason why autistic people stim is tied up in the fact that autistic people’s sensory processing tend to be atypical - when there’s a lot of overwhelming, stressing sensory input, providing your own repeated sensory input by listening to a song on repeat or rocking back or forth or smelling something you like the smell of may help you focus and calm down. Autistic people also stim to express emotions - it’s a natural part of our body language just like smiling or frowning is a natural part of most people’s body language. We may jump up and down and flap our hands when excited where most people would simply smile, or we may rock back and forth and press our hands against our faces where other people would cry. That being said, an autistic person doesn’t need a certain, deep reason for stimming - we often do it simply because it’s fun and because it feels good.
  • Shutdowns and meltdowns. Shutdowns and meltdowns are both responses to extreme distress - they’re often caused by unpleasant, overwhelming sensory input that the autistic person in question is unable to escape, but they can also be caused by strong negative emotions. A meltdown is an outward reaction to said distress where a shutdown is an inwards reaction. An autistic person having a meltdown is a person who has reached a point where they are no longer in control of their own body - they’re experiencing an flight or fight response, so to say. An autistic person may scream, lash out, cry, smash things and run away during a meltdown. Shutdowns are another possible response to a similar situation - during those, the autistic person may become unresponsive, locked in place, unable to talk, etc. You should never get mad at autistic people or hold them responsible for having meltdowns and shutdowns - they’ve reached a place where they’re so distressed that they’re losing control of themselves and instead of distressing them further, you should help them escape or resolve what’s causing the distress - after you have given them plenty of time to calm down and recover, that is.
  • Trouble with non-verbal communication such as body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. Autism is a disability which affects communication and the ability to socialize, meaning that autistic people may have trouble reading, using and comprehending body language, facial expressions and tone of voice just like they may have trouble learning, conforming to and applying social rules. We may not be able to take a hint that someone’s not interested in talking to us just like we may not notice when someone’s interested in us romantically or sexually. We have trouble noticing when other people are bored or tired or sad or angry and we might thus often come across as uncaring or annoying in social situations. Our trouble with reading other people and seeing the nuance in their body language, facial expressions and tone of voice also means that many autistic people have trouble grasping sarcasm, irony and metaphors.
  • Trouble with words and speech. Most autistic people have some degree of trouble with expressing their thoughts and opinions through spoken words. This is because most of us don’t naturally think in words - we may experience, think about and process the world around us in pictures or sensory experiences and we may thus have trouble transforming those input and experiences into words. We may also have trouble with the process of speaking, not because there’s something physically wrong with us but because we can have trouble with making our throats and mouths pronounce the words or because we may have trouble with going from thinking a word to succeeding with the process of actually saying it out loud. It’s common for autistic people to have periods where they aren’t able to speak - we call it going nonverbal - and some autistic people can’t speak at all. That doesn’t mean that they can’t think or communicate, though - they may instead communicate via written words, text to speech apps, facilitated typing, sign language, picture boards, etc.
  • Executive dysfunction. Executive functioning is what allows us to go from thinking about or wanting to do something to actually doing it, it’s what makes us able to keep the different steps required to complete a task straight in our heads and it’s what makes us able to plan and focus on different tasks. Autistic people often have trouble with executive functioning which makes many everyday tasks that most people can just do without thinking twice about it really hard. Imagine that you want to do laundry but your brain doesn’t automatically come up with the steps required to complete the task - take the laundry basket to the washing machine, open the washing machine, put clothes into the washing machine, add soap, etc - instead you’re just standing there, knowing that you somehow have to go from dirty laundry to clean clothes without knowing how to go about it. This is a problem for many autistic people which makes many everyday tasks hard or impossible to do without help. We may need someone to prompt us to do what we need to do or we may need someone to talk us through the steps or we may need visual or written instructions which illustrate the steps required to complete a certain task. Executive dysfunction is the main reason why many autistic people have trouble with basic, everyday tasks that most people their age can easily do without help.
  • Special interests. Many autistic people have a topic or a thing that they’re deeply, passionately interested in. Some autistic people compare having a special interest to being in love - it’s what your mind drifts to when there’s nothing else to occupy it, it’s the only thing you want to talk about, it’s the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning and it’s the last thing you think of before you fall asleep. This intense level of interest and passion often allows autistic people to excel in their areas of interest even when they may have trouble with basic everyday tasks. Some autistic people have special interests that lasts a life time, other people experience that their special interests change every couple years or maybe every couple months - or in some cases, every couple weeks. Some autistic people have one special interest at a time, other autistic people have many special interests.
  • Routines. Since the world is often very chaotic and confusing for autistic people due to our atypical sensory processing and our struggles with executive dysfunction and social interaction, many autistic people rely on routines to create a sense of order in a confusing and chaotic world. We usually like to do the same things in the exact same way every day and if something breaks our routine or if something unexpected happens - or if somebody suggests an impulsive trip to the beach on a day where we hadn’t expected to do anything but the usual - it may result in shutdowns or meltdowns. If you want an autistic person to break or change their routine it’s recommended that you warn them in good time and that you give them plenty of time to prepare and adjust.
  • Unique points of view and different ways of thinking. Due to the fact that autistic people experience the world so differently from how most people experience it, we see the world from a different angle - often allowing us to come up with ideas or thoughts or input or solutions that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. Autistic people often have unique points of view and unusual ways or thinking and learning and this is often a strength - as we say in the autistic community, we are different, not less.

I’ve now summarized some of the more common autistic traits and I hope that this post gave you a better understanding of what autism is and what it means to be autistic. Feel free to reblog and share this post far and wide if you found it helpful or educational.

ive been thinking abt things so heres a list of 100% Canon Bart Allen things that are Relatable and also we should talk abt more bc listen. Bart Allen is Autistic (and has adhd !! thats practically canon at this point i mean his name is impulse for fucks sake)

Low Empathy:

(Impulse, issue #7)

[caption: text bubble that says “And Inspiration to the empathically-challenged everywhere”]

this may not seem like the hugest deal but i think its super cool that one of the most fun and Cheerful and friendly characters in the DC universe who like, everyone calls super sweet all the time is “empathically challenged” (kind of crude wording imo but the point is !! bart allen has low empathy !!)

Difficulty Understanding Social Cues:

(also from Impulse #7)

[caption: a comic panel of a very pissed off carol bucken saying “don’t tell me, let me guess– you’re late because of something max forced you to do and he won’t let you tell me what it is or why.” to which bart responds with “you really do get it. cool”]

carol is pretty obviously pissed here, and bart takes it super literally and assumes she’s cool and understanding, it doesn’t seem like he can read her tone all that well !!!

Sensory Related Meltdown:

(Young Justice, issue #12)

[caption: comic panel of bart allen vibrating uncontrollably and looking very stressed out. he’s saying in an extremely panicked voice “cant.. had to go.. so fast.. having trouble… cant focus… cant… need max… wally… somebody.. help me bring it down… cant…”]

(context: Bart thought he could vibrate fast enough to get the whole team through a wall. and while he succeeded, it was super overwhelming and This Happened)

this ones not as blatant but honestly from my own experiences with sensory meltdowns/shutdowns this seems like a good representation of one ? (plus with added superspeed …)

stimming !!!!!!

(Young Justice, Season 2 Episode 12)

[caption: two gifs of bart allen tapping his hands and bouncing his leg]

i dont think this needs much of an explanation but just look at him go !!!

this got long bc of captions ! so TL:DR Bart Allen is autistic and has adhd and is fantastic

How to Manage your Time Better

1. Have a realistic plan for your day. Don’t just work on impulse, and don’t do try to do more than you can handle.

2. Prioritize your work, and do the most important things first

3. Know what your distractions are, and take steps to control them (for example, switch off your phone)

4. Start early, and keep on going, even when you feel discouraged or fed up

5. Know what’s irrelevant, and don’t waste your time on unproductive, or pointless things

6. Switch between focused work and lots of short breaks

7. Be flexible if you meet with obstacles, or things don’t turn out the way you’d planned.

Big Rumors

4chan has been causing some noise with big rumors of big changes coming to DC. I’ve decided to take a look at what they’re saying and share my opinion.

1)      Dark Days is the mysterious “Metal” event Scott Snyder has been teasing he’ll do with Greg Capulo. It will bring characters from alternate Universes to Prime DC Earth, some of which will try to take it over. Some of them will stick around after the event and be featured in books from September, when every title will get a one-shot setting up new status quo after one year time skip. – Pretty standard, I could buy this one.

2)      One of the characters that stick around will be Superboy Prime, whom Clark will try to redeem on the pages of Superman. – Risky move since it’s Prime but I could totally see Superman try to redeem him.

3)      We will see the return of JSA with Power Girl, Jay Garrick, Red Tornado, Alan Scott and Johnny Thunder, in a new book by Dan Abnett – Will those be Earth-2 characters back to the Prime Earth or Pre-Flashpoint versions?

4)      Another character from another Universe to stick around will be Mar’I Grayson, daughter of Dick and Kory. Nightwing will have to search for her in his own book. – I could see it. If this and 14 will be true, I want them to cross over.

5)      Another will be Bart Allen, who will be featured as Impulse alongside Jesse Quick, Max Mercury and older Wally West in Speed Force by Brett Booth and writing and art – Hell yes Bart is back. And since people wanted a team of speedsters – yeah, I can see this too.

6)      Red Robin will escape from Mr. Oz’ captivity and free several other inmates, leading them as the new Outsiders – They kept Tim quite a bit away, he really could return. Hope Conner and few other forgotten characters will be on this team.

7)      Cyborg will be canceled but replaced with a team-up book (mini?) between him and Shazam, by John Semper. Hal Jordan and Green Lantern Corps will be relaunched as Green Lantern Corps with Hal still leading, but Kyle dying in Dark Days and John and Soranik going to Cullen Bunn’s to Yellow Lanterns.  Don’t worry, Green Lanterns will still be going and keep its creative team, but will go monthly. – Don’t know about the others but I could see Green Lanterns turning monthly. I’ll be mad if they’ll kill Kyle.

8)      Other canceled titles are Superwoman and Blue Beetle with Jaime joining Teen Titans. Red Hood and the Outlaws as well, with Artemis and Bizarro returning to Wonder Woman and Action Comics and Jason getting a solo series by Lobdell. – Totally could see Blue Beetle canceled and Jaime joining Teen Titans and we already have rumors about Superwoman ending. But I thought people liked new Outlaws.

9)      Due to poor sales both Batgirl and Batgirl & the Birds of Prey will be canceled, Barbara will make heroic sacrifice putting her back into a wheelchair. The books will be relaunched as Birds of Prey, where Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary are joined by Lady Blackhawk and Batgirls by Genevieve Valentine, where Barbara trains Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown as her successors. – And this one I cannot buy. DC was so adamant to keep Barbara as Batgirl I find it now hard to believe they would give in and make her Oracle again. And Babs training Steph and Cass written by Genevieve Valentine sounds too good to be true.

10)   Which of course means Cass is leaving Detective Comics. So is Clayface and the post-Dark Days roster will keep Batman, Batwoman, Batwing, and Azrael and add Duke Thomas, Harper Row and Anarky. – Happy to see Luke and Duke in one team since I wanted that and Harper and Kate could result in them showing up on another ball in tuxedos to pick up ladies, so I both could see this happen and would welcome them as additions to the team.

11)   Other new books announced are Legion by James Tynion, Checkmate by Tom King and World’s Fines by Tim Seeley, where every issue features a team-up between different members of Batfamily and Superfamily. – Team up book? Please let it be real, I always liked those.

12)   Batman leading the JLA will be revealed to be Martian Manhunter in disguise. – For what purpose?

13)   More miniseries including 12-parts mini about Crime Syndicate of Earth 3, Justice Incarnate by Peter Thomasi and a completely new Batman Beyond starring Damian who grew up without knowing Bruce and a GCPD cop Sarah Grayson, Dick’s daughter, as his love interest. – Does that mean current Batman Beyond will be canceled?

14)   Slade Wilson will go missing with Rose taking the codename Deathstroke as she tries to find him. – Okay, on the one hand, Deathstroke editor recently teased a bold new direction (still by Priest) but on the other, it was something I once cooked up and proposed on this blog, even got in an argument whenever it would be a good decision with @rosewilsontheravager . It could be something they put for people like me to go nuts….

The Yams per Minute Story

SO… WHY ISN’T THIS EVERYWHERE BY NOW.

Misha told us a new story today at the panel. A college days story, which is my favorite kind of story.

Because college students are poor, Misha lived off of cheap, nutritious foods like rice and beans. He also recalled reading somewhere that you can live off of yams, so he bought 10 at the store one day on impulse (maybe they were having a sale at the time?). He brought them home, but of course he didn’t eat them right away and they started to go bad.

He realizes that he has to eat them all fairly quickly, so he decides to turn it into a game.

He bets his four roommates $10 each that he can eat these 10 yams in 10 minutes. They take him up on it. He eats the first yam in a minute and a half, and he gets through the second one by like the 6 minute mark and he’s starting to gag. He’s halfway through the third before he realizes that he is never going to finish and he feels awful. So he gives up and calls the competition off.

In his defeat he wobbles over to the pantry, and he sees this bottle of apple cider vinegar sitting there. Conveniently, he remembered that as kids, he and Sasha used to take shots of that stuff so he believed he’d built up a tolerance for it.

He carries the bottle back over to the table and he says, “Ok, guys. Double or nothing I drink this whole thing… in one minute.”

He throws up all over the fucking place.

It happened so quickly that he didn’t even realize what was happening at first. It just all came out. Everywhere.

So by the end of the day, college-aged Misha is out $80 and he has to clean up his own yam-and-vinegar puke mixture off the kitchen floor.

First Valentine’s Day - Bart Allen x Reader

Requested by Anon - a First Valentines Day with Bart cuz they don’t celebrate it in the future.

Everything started when you found out Bart had never celebrated officially Valentine’s Day. You overheard him talking with Jaime about it, asking what it was about for he only heard vague stories about it. After hearing Jaime’s attempt at an explanation, you decided to give Bart the best first Valentine’s day ever.

Of course, Bart and you weren’t dating, but the constantly flirting between the two of you hinted at something more. So, you didn’t feel too uncomfortable about it. After all, if Bart turned out to not have any feelings for you at all, you could still do it as a friend.

You planned everything out, even going so far as to recruit other members of the team to make sure Bart would arrive and receive everything he was supposed to at the right time. It was a lot of work, but you knew it would be worth it.

The morning of fourteenth of February arrived with a knock on the door of the Garricks’ house. Bart zoomed through the house, having been up for hours trying to make a Valentine’s Day card for you. After hearing Jaime’s explanation of Valentine’s day, he researched a bit on his own, and figured out what he should do.

That being said, Bart was shocked beyond belief when he opened the door to find four heart shaped boxes of chocolate with a card with his name lying on his doorstep. Bart picked up the boxes, tucking them under his arm before opening up the card.

top ten times yuuri katsuki broke the internet

Top Ten Times Yuuri Katsuki Broke The Internet:

10) The day that Viktor impulse bought a piano and then posted a video of Yuuri playing it and singing quietly which was when everyone found out that Yuuri could play and also sang like an angel. The general reaction was ‘is there anything this guy can’t do?’ to which Viktor’s reply was ‘no.’

9) When Yuuri and Viktor got their new labradoodle puppy together the first the world knew about it was a picture of Yuuri on the floor in a puppy pile with Vicchan, Makkachin and the new puppy and it was so adorable it went viral instantly

8) The ‘not if, when’ moment talked about in chapter 1 of ‘obs&bh’ because that was one of the big kick off moments for the rivalry image

7) When Yuuri skated onto the ice to ice dance with Viktor for the Stammi Vicino duet which was Viktor’s exhibition piece the year after the events of chapter 14

6) The first time Yuuri ever did a shirtless photoshoot (with Viktor because Viktor knew he would be more comfortable doing it if it was both of them so he offered to do it too). It was all very classy and most of the photos involved the two of them together and 90% of the internet had one of the ‘do I want to be one of them or be between them’ crises

5) A video of an 11 year old Yuuri skating the ‘O mio babbino caro’ routine, aka Viktor’s JGP routine, that he released to the public. This was after they were together but before the world really knew what caused the rivalry in the first place and so everyone completely freaked out because kid-Katsuki was adorably replicating one of Viktor’s routines but the first time Katsuki came into the spotlight he seemed to hate Viktor so what did this mean??? It created so many conspiracy theories.

4) When Yuuri co-wrote a book telling his and Viktor’s story. In interviews and things before they had spoken a bit about what had lead up to The Kiss and their lives but it was the first time the whole, unabridged and completely accurate story was known and the first time anyone knew about the original cause of the rivalry. It was a brutally honest book and very compelling, telling both sides of the story (Viktor contributed a lot but Yuuri already knew his side by heart at that point) and became a huge bestseller.

3) The wedding announcement although again, who proposed and how is currently a secret

2) The main wedding photo that they released. It was a private ceremony because they lived a lot of their life in the public eye and Yuuri wanted something that was just for them so friends and family only. There were a couple of pictures from guests but they only released one official photo. It was taken at the altar of the two of them holding hands and gazing into each others eyes and they looked so ridiculously happy and in love that it finally killed the last of the rumours about them and made everyone who had doubted it believe that Yes, they were actually that in love because no-one could fake that

1) The Kiss
