Here Ammophila arenaria (marram grass) plays a vital role in the stabilisation of the coastal dunes of the Shetland Isles with the fibrous, matted roots binding the sand. The dense, grey-green tufts of rolled leaves withstand dry conditions and are characteristic of this invasive grass.
