Watching Dangal tonight, I had tears in my eyes from the first scenes and didn’t stop crying up until the credits rolled. It was such a moving story, and one that was so rare. Bollywood almost always sexualises its female leads and ensures that men stay front and centre. But here we had two girls being portrayed as multi-dimensional people and proving society wrong. It showed us how much harder women have to work to reach the same platform as men.
The cinema was packed with desis, and plenty of desi men who had paid to see a female-centric film. There were frequent outbursts of applause throughout the movie as well because it was so uplifting.
There were also uncomfortable scenes of a father letting his ego and his own dreams get in the way of his daughters’ well being. There was a brilliant scene in the end that demonstrated how Geeta didn’t need to rely on her father’s guidance to win gold and that she only has to rely on her own talents to succeed.
10/10 beautiful would watch again a hundred times love you amir khan 4eva
