america latina

Reflection: El Otro Lado

Heritage, culture, and land. Do I solely belong to one? Is my land the one who fights for freedom, a democracy that promotes equality? Is my land the one where my mother found hope in: America land of the free? Or am I the extension of my mother’s land: Mexico lindo, where my mother hopes to one day return. Am I just a Mexican flag planted on U.S. soil? Am I books, religion, technology, democracy, and hope? Or am I daughter of esperanza; Early rise, working hands, handmade tortillas, agriculture, coffee plantations, and shooting stars? I cannot belong to only one. I am a mixture of both. Walking between the borders, holding on to each side. Holding English and Español. First generation college student, living on campus and missing the skies of Tapachula. I am a feminist still in la lucha. I am the Latina in America, the American of the family. I am a bridge between both cultures… Now imagine the pain to hear that the President, wants to build a wall to further emphasize and divide an already existing boarder. When prejudice and discrimination have been endorsed. Immigrants have left behind everything they knew and risked their lives in an exodus to find hope. Not only immigrants from Mexico and South America, but from every part of the world. United States of America, have you forgotten you are supposed to be land of the free? Undocumented immigrants who now only have home in America fear for their lives. Fear for their children’s lives. A country founded by immigrants is now developing an irrational fear for those who are different in appearance, religion, and culture… Families are giving up on their dreams, thinking of how their lives will be in the years to come. Mothers who cannot imagine having to start over in a country that is now foreign to them… During my break I went to visit my mother’s homeland and it is not too long before I find out how corrupt the government is and there is not too much the people can do. New Year begins (2017) and gas prices are over the top. There are protesters and marches, but even those are rigged by the government. Less than a week into the New Year and stores are burnt down, families are left without groceries, and there is nothing I can do about it. Not too long ago, teachers and students were hurt and killed while protesting to unfair/no salary appointed to educators. Families and towns know each other, there is music and comradery amongst each other, but those star filled nights contain the pain and hurt of my people. I can see it as they watch the news every morning. And even they, are one of the fortunate, because they have enough to take public transportation to el centro. I can feel their pain as they tell me I am lucky to be from the other side. I cannot do much to help them, and so I don’t tell them the other side hurts too. I refrain from telling them there are marches and protests in LA, Washington D.C, New York City, and in all U.S. They cannot believe that law enforcement has brutally beat and kill innocent too. They do not know fellow classmates have received hatred for their sexual orientation, that our Muslim and Black brothers and sisters have been targeted by white supremacists. They do not know my biggest fear, when I moved on campus, was getting shot. It is a different battle, different pains, but nonetheless, it still hurts….  I saw Barack Obama give his farewell address and I shed tears. For both countries. For all the countries. For the blood of the innocent. For those with no food. For the refugees. For the fighting immigrants. For the slaved. For human kind, who tends to be self-destructive. But I also have hope. Hope that as Obama said, we as individuals, and as citizens can make a difference in the world. I believe that I have the opportunity to positively change the world, one person at a time, in the course of my life. And hope that the domino effect of many people who are as eager to change the world, for the better, will come together. Like in the Women’s march, to show resistance and unity. Like in JFK airport, protesting injustices. Like in Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), standing up for others. We will no longer be bystanders.

LA OPOSICION COLOMBIANA, LA OPOSICION VENEZOLANA, LA OPOSICION ECUATORIANA, LA OPOSICION BOLIVIANA Y TODA LAS DEMOCRACIAS EN AMERICA LATINA Y EE.UU. CELEBRAN LA REUNION DEL EXPRESIDENTE Y SENADOR ALVARO URIBE VELEZ Y EL EXPRESIDENTE ANDRES PASTRANA CON DONALD TRUMP.

bbypoursomesugaronme  asked:
