Chapter 17 of A Marriage Between Victors is up!

“Miss Everdeen, I’m Commander Boggs. I’m from District 13.” He said, his voice deep and authoritative but not unkind.

“What’s happening?” She asked, rising to her feet, taking in the scene around her.

“A strategic rescue mission. Victors in each district allied with Thirteen are being rescued as we speak,” he spoke with military precision.

“Seven districts, Katniss. Seven districts in outright rebellion,” Gale added.

“The Quell, it isn’t happening? We’re not going back?” She asked breathlessly.

“Not if we can help it,” Boggs replied.

So sorry for going so incredibly long between updates. Thank you to everyone for not giving up on me or this story.

AMBV Ch. 12 preview (AKA I'm not dead!)

I could offer a ton of reasons as to why it has taken me so long to update this story, but I won’t. But I will offer proof that I am working on it and to quote Sherlock, “Not dead.”

Chapter 12

Hours later a soft knock sounded at the door.

“Peeta, Katniss dears, I’m afraid we have a schedule to follow. You’re due for an appearance in the city circle this afternoon and we need to leave in the next hour. Your prep teams will be arriving soon.”

“Thank you, Effie. We’ll be ready.” Peeta replied in a solemn voice from his place sitting on the bedroom floor, his back against the wall.

His eyes never left Katniss, lying motionless on the bed, awake but unreachable.

Her eyes squeezed tightly shut. She’d heard Effie’s words.

She didn’t move when Peeta placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

She still didn’t move when her prep team arrived and stared at her with frantic and pitiful expressions.

She didn’t move until Haymitch lifted her from the mattress and set her under the spray of an ice cold shower.

The water shocked her body back into awareness and she sputtered at her mentor. “What are you doing!”

“Whatever it takes to wake you up, Sweetheart. You let yourself fall too far down the rabbit hole and there’s no coming back.”

Katniss shivered violently under the cold water, staring daggers at her mentor.

“I’m giving you five minutes and then you’re going to get your ass up and get ready because dammit Sweetheart you’re not the only one things are rough for around here. They made Red the Avox, not you. And that boy is sick with worry over you. Even Effie’s this close to biting off her manicured nails. I’m sorry for what’s happening. What they did to that peacekeeper is god-awful and it’s a damn shame you had to find out that way, but I’m going to keep you alive whether you like it or not and in order to do that I need you primped and ready to go. This isn’t the first horrible thing Snow’s done and it probably won’t be the last, but no matter what the show goes on.”

The show went on indeed. It was several more days of public appearances around the Capitol, and nightly parties at the president’s mansion.

They were all exhausted — even Effie with her boundless energy and enthusiasm — by the time they boarded the train to return to District 12.

Katniss and Peeta had hardly spoken since that fateful morning. The only kisses they shared were for the cameras but each night, without fail, they found their way to each other, taking refuge in each other’s arms. Come morning light, Katniss was cold and hard as the steely color of her eyes.

They were outside District 9 when the train stopped to refuel. Haymitch motioned for them to follow when he exited the train.

“You two will be mentors soon, so I thought maybe there was a lesson you ought to learn.” He took a long pause and and kicked some gravel thoughtfully before continuing. “The most important thing to remember in the games is to stay alive, as well you know, but there are a lot of ways to go about doing that. You can lay low, like the pair from Six did. You can pretend, like Johanna. You can outsmart them, like Beetee, or you can just plain beat them, like the Careers do. Now all of them did it alone. But what makes us different is that we didn’t do it alone, we had allies.”

Katniss and Peeta looked at their mentor questioningly, he had never discussed his own games and truthfully they had never thought to ask.

“We’re coming up on the 75th games, another Quarter Quell. You’re looking at the winner of the last one. But I didn’t win on my own. There was a girl from 12, smart as a whip, and for a while we helped each other stay alive. But I knew there could only be one winner, so I went my own way and told her to go hers. She did, and she died.”

Haymitch ran a shaky hand through his greasy hair, but his sharp gaze was steady. “You hear what I’m saying? You abandon your allies and they die. It’s a lesson I learned the hard the way. You too, Katniss.”

Her eyes flashed with fire at the mention of Rue but Haymitch continued. “I’m just saying, just because you’ve abandoned hope doesn’t mean you should abandon your ally. You two make a pretty good team when you get your heads out of your asses,” he smirked before solemnly continuing, “All things considered, you two did an okay job this last trip, but you can sure as hell do better.”

He stared at his tributes meaningfully before stalking off toward the train.

Haymitch had one foot on board when Peeta turned around and asked, “Who was the girl? Your ally from Twelve?”

“Maysilee Donner.” The train door closed with a resounding thud, leaving Katniss and Peeta alone in the silent aftermath.

“Madge’s aunt,” she spoke quietly.

Peeta drew in a deep breath before speaking, “Katniss I’m sor—”

“Don’t,” she interrupted forcefully, placing her finger to his lips.“Don’t apologize.” She turned to him and for once there wasn’t steel in her gray eyes. “You didn’t do anything wrong. There’s no reason for you to say you’re sorry.”

She didn’t move her hand until Peeta nodded his head, acknowledging her words.

They stood shoulder to shoulder looking out over endless fields of grain when Peeta spoke. “He’s right though, we make a pretty good team.”

“It’s what we do. We protect each other.”

They were just about to board the train when Katniss stopped. “He was wrong about one thing though.”

“What’s that?” Peeta asked.

Katniss gave him a small smile. “I still haven’t given up hope.“

AMBV Ch. 16 preview

Thank you to everyone for your kind words of encouragement. Chapter 16 is in the editing process and I hope to post it by the end of the week! Here’s a snippet of the upcoming chapter. I love writing snarky characters so much…

Katniss woke slowly the next morning, clinging to bits and pieces of her dream. She could still hear the faint call of a mockingjay’s song in the woods. She peeked an eye open, surprised to see the sun already creeping above the horizon.

“Morning sunshine,” Haymitch drawled from his seat on the sofa, a steaming hot cup of coffee raised to his lips. “Sleep well, did ya?”

Katniss scowled, clutching the blanket tightly to her chest before nudging Peeta awake. The sweet, dreamy smile on his face fell when he spotted their mentor.

“Keep this up in the arena and you two could break Finnick O’Dair’s record for sponsor gifts,” he remarked sarcastically.

Katniss groaned, dropping her head into the palms of hands. “Can you give us some privacy?”

I sure do miss AMBV. Yours is among the best characterization I've ever read. Updates soon? Maybe an SSS? Thank you!

I am sorry anon. I write slow. It’s not Sunday, but here’s something…

She was startled awake before dawn by Peeta jostling her shoulder. He tossed gray sweats in her lap before jogging down the stairs, shouting at her to be ready in 10 minutes. Haymitch was sitting at the counter nursing a strong cup of black coffee when she walked into the kitchen. Peeta held a skillet in one hand and dished eggs onto their plates with the other. A hearty serving of eggs, bacon, fruit and toast sat on the plate before her. Peeta tucked into his breakfast immediately, downing the delicious food between gulps of unsweetened tea. Katniss sipped at the orange juice before her, still trying to gather her bearings when Peeta spoke.

“I figure we’ll start with a lap around the district. Then some calisthenics. We can work on strength and endurance training and hand-to-hand combat. I figure a healthy rotation of…”

“Whoa, whoa, hold your britches boy. My eyes are barely open,” Haymitch snapped.

Peeta grabbed the pot of coffee and meaningfully poured the surly mentor another cup. “Then drink up. We’ve got a long day ahead of us.”

A Marriage Between Victors SSS

Chapter 13 is done. I’m in the editing phase now. Man I need to find a beta.

“Be careful. Whatever caused Gale to jump the fence must be awfully important or awfully dangerous,“ Peeta warned her.

She nodded, “I know.”

“Whatever happens, promise me I’ll see you at midnight?” He asked.

“At midnight,” she solemnly vowed.

Katniss made her way into the forest, despite the circumstances it was still comforting to be surrounded by the familiar woods.

She tracked Gale to the hollowed out log where they stored their weapons and found his bow missing. She grabbed hers and strapped the quiver across her chest before notching an arrow, ready to fire.

She estimated she was about halfway to cabin by the lake when she spotted him. Katniss was speechless when she found that he wasn't alone.

“Madge?” She choked out.
