I knew I missed Marina and the Diamonds, who’s been on a hiatus of sorts since April of 2016, but I didn’t really realize exactly how insanely much until I woke up to this treat and heard her voice. Welsh singer songwriter Marina Diamandis is the latest artist to link up with British electronic collective Clean Bandit on a fresh new jam. Stringy orchestral dance act Clean Bandit is a long time IHM favorite too, as some of you might recall, so this sweet collaboration rockets me to cloud nine instantaneously. Clean Bandit and Marina’s Disconnect is a beauty of a spiraling electronic delight. Its meditative pace and ambient synths remind me of Röyksopp’s work with Robyn, but Disconnect is also distinctly Marina and oh so very bouncy crisp Clean Bandit. The song should be a new taste from Clean Bandit’s forthcoming sophomore album, arriving later this year. Download/stream Disconnect, here.
I really think that for us, who all grew up listening primarily to recorded music, we tend to forget that until about 120 years ago ephemeral experience was the only one people had. I remember reading about a huge fan of Beethoven who lived to the age of 86 [in the era before recordings], and the great triumph of his life was that he’d managed to hear the Fifth Symphony six times. That’s pretty amazing. They would have been spread over many years, so there would have been no way of reliably comparing those performances.
